LOS ANGELES – Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of Gov. Gavin Newsom, took to Twitter late Sunday to post, then delete a message urging people to "stop hating" while her husband has been out of the public eye since canceling plans to attend last month's climate summit in Scotland, according to a screenshot.

Sophia Bollag, a politics reporter from the Sacramento Bee, first reported on the tweet. She posted that the governor’s office has refused to clarify the "family obligations" tying him up. The since-deleted tweet may touch on the issue.

"It’s funny how certain folks can’t handle truth," Siebel Newsom’s tweet read, according to a screenshot. "When someone cancels something, maybe they’re just in the office working; maybe in their free time they’re at home with their family, at their kids’ sports matches, or dining out with their wife. Please stop hating and get a life."

Newsom’s office did not immediately respond to an after-hours email from Fox News. His office also did not respond to questions Friday about what the governor has been doing this week, The Associated Press reported.

When the initial announcement was made Oct. 29, his office said Newsom planned to participate virtually in the United Nations climate summit. But he did not. His last public appearance was Oct. 27, when he received a coronavirus booster shot.

The AP reported that it is a relatively slow time in Sacramento as the state Legislature is not in session and won’t meet again until January. Recent storms mean no major wildfires are burning out of control, as has been the case in recent years.

"I don’t know where Gavin Newsom is and won’t speculate," tweeted Kevin Kiley, a Republican assemblyman from the state. "But it’s pretty strange for the Governor to disappear for 11 days without explanation."

WATSONVILLE — Local residents were among nine men caught up in the net of a federal weapons-trafficking operation this week.

U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives agents, in partnership with the Watsonville Police Department on Thursday, arrested Ramon Castillo, 25, and Carlos Manuel Ruiz-Montanez, 20, both of Watsonville, on illegal firearms-related charges. Ruiz-Montanez is being held on suspicion of aiding and abetting the illegal possession and transfer of machine guns and dealing firearms without a license, while Castillo faces a charge of illegal possession and transfer of machine guns.

During the operation, which spanned primarily Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, some 50 firearms, including AR-type rifles, short-barrel rifles, shotguns, handguns, ghost guns, a machine gun and more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition were seized, according to a media release from the Northern District’s U.S. Attorney’s Office. According to affidavits filed Monday, undercover ATF operatives allegedly purchased at least 35 firearms, including machine guns, numerous rounds of ammunition and quantities of methamphetamine from the defendants from February 2020 to September 2021.

Agents also purchased eight machine gun conversion devices called “switches” or “sears” from the defendants. The devices illegally allow semi-automatic firearms to function as fully automatic weapons.

“We had our special investigations unit out there helping, as well as detectives and officers,” said Watsonville Police Department spokesperson Michelle Pulido. “Of course, when federal officers or any other agencies come and ask for our help, we’re always more than willing to help and ensure that we have a safe community for our residents and that we’re doing whatever we can to get illegal guns off our streets.”

The sales occurred in various locations in Salinas and Watsonville, including the parking lots of local businesses and the defendants’ residences.

“The criminal complaints unsealed today, taken together, describe sales of over 25 firearms, including privately made firearms also known as “ghost guns” and conversion devices that enable firearms to function as fully automatic weapons,” Acting U.S. Attorney Stephanie Hinds was quoted in a media release Thursday. “Operations such as this one target the pipeline of firearms to the street. By reducing the availability of illegal firearms, we take an important step toward reducing violent crime.”

The ATF also coordinated with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the California Highway Patrol, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the Salinas Police Department to arrest Gregory Cabrera, 34, Francisco “Chito” Javier Jaramillo, 27, Cody Lee Moreno, 23, and Ruben Adolfo Pimentel, 29, all of Salinas. Additional arrests included Martin “Silent” Campos Jr., 24, of Springdale, Arizona and Gabriel Penuelas-Garcia, 43, of Aromas.

A reputational crisis at the Federal Reserve has led to the resignation of two senior officials within the central bank, raising questions about the strength of the Fed’s guardrails around personal financial interests.

In September 2021, media reports highlighted several large financial transactions carried out by Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan and Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren during 2020. As the heads of two of the Fed's network of 12 reserve banks, both were instrumental in engineering the Fed’s response to the financial fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rosengren and Kaplan would promise not to do any more trading during their tenure as senior Fed officials, but would later announce early retirements as the public fallout expanded.

Fed Vice Chairman Richard Clarida would also likely catch scrutiny for rotating millions of dollars out of bond fund and into stock funds in February 2020 — right before the Fed started slashing interest rates.
