The Facebook Team that Tried to Swing Nicaragua’s Election is Full of U.S. Spies

 

MANAGUA, NICARAGUA — Less than a week before Nicaragua’s presidential election, social media giant Facebook deleted the accounts of hundreds of the country’s top news outlets, journalists and activists, all of whom supported the ruling left-wing Sandinista government, a top Washington target for regime change.

 

Facebook claims that these accounts were bots engaged in “inauthentic behavior.” Considering that around half of the country uses the platform for news and entertainment, the decision could barely have been more heavy-handed and intrusive. However, early reports show that if their goal was to swing the result, it has failed badly and the Sandinistas have achieved an overwhelming victory.

 

“This is appalling interference by Facebook in particular (which is the most popular social media outlet in Nicaragua). They allege that they’ve stopped a government-deployed troll farm but what they have actually done is to close accounts of ordinary Sandinista activists, particularly young people, often with many followers,” John Perry, a journalist living in the city of Masaya, told MintPress.

 

Worse still, after dozens of Sandinistas took to Twitter to record video messages proving they were real people being censored, their accounts were systematically deleted as well, in what Managua-based journalist Ben Norton described as a Silicon Valley “double-tap strike.”

 

“These are accounts that average Nicaraguans have come to count on for news and communicating with each other about current events and, in this case, about the election. So it is very troubling that it was obviously targeted against one political group: the Sandinistas,” said Daniel Kovalik, a human-rights lawyer and an observer of this weekend’s elections.

 

Both Perry and Kovalik were of the opinion that it was no coincidence that Facebook had taken action against precisely the group the U.S. government is trying to overthrow.

GOP candidate claims Michael Flynn hoped to blackmail U.S. officials into pro-Trump "audits"

 

A Republican Senate candidate alleged over the weekend that Michael Flynn, the retired general and former national security adviser, has sought damaging information on elected officials in a number of states, with the apparent goal of blackmailing them into supporting conspiratorial election audits meant to reinforce Donald Trump's false claims that the 2020 election was fraudulent.

 

Everett Stern, a businessman who owns a private intelligence firm called Tactical Rabbit and is running for the open U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, held a press conference Saturday to share his purported findings, later tweeting out a link to the video of his remarks titled, "Everett Stern Releases New Evidence of Ongoing Domestic Terror Threat Links to General Michael T. Flynn."

 

"I'm here today not as a candidate running for U.S. Senate, I'm here as a citizen who is genuinely concerned about our country, sincerely concerned about the undermining of our democracy," Stern said in the opening moments of his statement. He also claimed to be in touch with federal law enforcement about the situation.

 

Stern claims that at least two people representing a Flynn-linked group called "Patriot Caucus" approached him earlier this year after a public speech, offering to hire his firm to gather "dirt" on officials and recruit others to assist in the plot. One of the men allegedly told Stern that they had retained the services of active intelligence officials "both domestic and foreign."

 

"They wanted to gather intelligence on senators, judges, congressmen, state reps, to move them towards the audit," Stern said. "The word 'move' was emphasized tremendously. It was clear to me what they wanted was not traditional opposition research — what they wanted was to extort and to literally move people towards the audit with dirt."

The Biden administration is planning to waive immigration-related fees for up to 70,000 Afghan evacuees as they are resettled in the United States, the Department of Homeland Security said Monday.

 

The resettlement challenge has dogged the administration since the frenzied evacuation from Afghanistan in August: resettling tens of thousands of people many of whom worked with or on behalf of the US within only weeks or months.

 

The administration will now exempt Afghan evacuees many of whom arrived in the United States with little to nothing from paying costly application fees to get authorization to work or apply for lawful permanent residence.

 

The filing fee for work permit applications which Afghans need to legally work in the US is $410 and fees for obtaining lawful permanent residence can be up to $1,225.

 

"By providing these evacuees with access to streamlined processing and fee exemptions, we will open doors of opportunity for our Afghan allies and help them begin to rebuild their lives in communities across our country more quickly," Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement.

 

"Today's announcement provides some much needed financial relief to our newest Afghan neighbors," tweeted Krish O'Mara Vignarajah, the president and CEO of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. "Most of the families we're serving have no nest egg to draw from, and every expense is a source of stress and anxiety."

 

Afghans who were paroled into the US on or after July 30 are eligible for the fee exemptions, according to DHS.

Last month, a group of Democratic senators urged DHS and US Citizenship and Immigration Services to waive fees for Afghans applying for humanitarian parole to come to the US, arguing the "burden of application fees is weighing heavily on communities here in the United States."

According to DHS, there are approximately 51,000 people at eight Department of Defense sites in the US and roughly 2,500 at sites in Europe and the Middle East.

 

A total of 68,000 Afghans have come to the US since August 17 – shortly before the US military withdrawal from their country at the end of that month. More than 14,000 of them have been resettled in the US, per DHS.

Company That Paid Largest Health Care Fraud Penalty in History Claims Its New COVID Drug Cuts Hospitalization, Death by 85%

 

 

American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. and its subsidiary Pharmacia & Upjohn Company Inc. (hereinafter together “Pfizer”) have agreed to pay $2.3 billion, the largest health care fraud settlement in the history of the Department of Justice, to resolve criminal and civil liability arising from the illegal promotion of certain pharmaceutical products, the Justice Department announced today.

 

Pharmacia & Upjohn Company has agreed to plead guilty to a felony violation of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act for misbranding Bextra with the intent to defraud or mislead. Bextra is an anti-inflammatory drug that Pfizer pulled from the market in 2005. Under the provisions of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, a company must specify the intended uses of a product in its new drug application to FDA. Once approved, the drug may not be marketed or promoted for so-called “off-label” uses – i.e., any use not specified in an application and approved by FDA. Pfizer promoted the sale of Bextra for several uses and dosages that the FDA specifically declined to approve due to safety concerns. The company will pay a criminal fine of $1.195 billion, the largest criminal fine ever imposed in the United States for any matter. Pharmacia & Upjohn will also forfeit $105 million, for a total criminal resolution of $1.3 billion.

 

In addition, Pfizer has agreed to pay $1 billion to resolve allegations under the civil False Claims Act that the company illegally promoted four drugs – Bextra; Geodon, an anti-psychotic drug; Zyvox, an antibiotic; and Lyrica, an anti-epileptic drug – and caused false claims to be submitted to government health care programs for uses that were not medically accepted indications and therefore not covered by those programs. The civil settlement also resolves allegations that Pfizer paid kickbacks to health care providers to induce them to prescribe these, as well as other, drugs.

Currently, Green Bay Packers’ star quarterback Aaron Rodgers is lighting up the media airwaves, triggering supporters of vaccine mandates and receiving a slew of backlash. For his personal medical decisions, the establishment media has taken to digitally tarring and feathering him, up to and including, lying about what he’s said in order to discredit him. The hate, vitriol, and slander are flying at him, yet Rodgers has harmed no one.

 

This is the gamut of scorn that all people in Rodgers’ shoes must go through in today’s society when they challenge the status quo. It has many names but ‘cancel culture’ sums it up well. It is a form of weaponized ostracism and most who go through it don’t survive.

 

Recently, however, some folks have reached un-cancelable status. Joe Rogan, Dave Chappelle, and now Aaron Rodgers have reached points in their careers where no one can pull their strings and, therefore, the calls from the cancel cult fall on deaf ears.

 

Canceling or censoring someone’s peaceful views is not done for the betterment of society. It is done because it challenges the collective view of the established norm. The collective hates to have its views challenged because it forces them to defend often illogical, unreasonable, and even completely false ideologies.

 

Rodgers choosing to abstain from getting the covid vaccination — although a personal and private choice that is no one’s business but his own — was seen as a challenge to the collective and, therefore, an information war was waged against him. But thanks to his un-cancelable status, Rodgers is weathering the storm just fine.

 

In an interview on Friday with Pat McAfee, Rodgers got to tell his side of the story and he held no punches. Out of the gate, Rodgers acknowledged that he was in the “crosshairs” of the cancel culture over his personal medical choices and he immediately pointed out their lies.

 

I realize I’m in the crosshairs of the woke mob right now. So before my final nail gets put in my cancel culture casket, I think I’d like to set the record straight on so many of the blatant lies that are out there about myself right now. And I appreciate the opportunity to tell my side of the story on here. First of all, I didn’t lie in the initial press conference. During that time, it was a very clear witch hunt that was going on across the league, where everybody in the media was so concerned about who was vaccinated and who wasn’t and what that meant and who was being selfish and who would talk about it and what it meant if they said it’s a personal decision, they shouldn’t have to disclose their own medical information and whatnot.

 

The media claimed that because Rodgers said he was “immunized” that he lied about his vaccination status. But this is simply not true. Again, Rodgers’ vaccination status is no one’s business but he did not lie when saying he was immunized.

 

I believe strongly in bodily autonomy and the ability to make choices for your body, not to have to acquiesce to some woke culture or crazed group of individuals who say you have to do something. Health is not a one size fits all for everybody.

In Huge Blow to DC Attorney General, Judge Dismisses Portion of Inauguration Lawsuit Against Trump Org

 

A superior court judge on Monday dismissed a portion of a 2017 inauguration lawsuit against the Trump Organization.

 

The lawsuit, brought by DC Attorney General Karl Racine, claimed Trump’s inaugural committee “wasted” $1 million renting ballrooms at Trump’s DC hotel.

 

Imagine that. A Democrat worried about wasting money.

 

Judge José López said the plaintiff didn’t reach the “extreme burden” needed to prove a “waste” claim

 

“In short, there is no genuine dispute that the value paid for the space at the Trump Hotel reaches the extreme burden that Plaintiff need to carry a waste claim to its fruition,” Judge José López wrote.

 

ABC News reported:

 

The Trump Organization secured a partial victory on Monday as a Washington, D.C., superior court judge [Lopez] dismissed a portion of a lawsuit brought by the D.C. attorney general over actions by former President Donald Trump’s 2017 Presidential Inaugural Committee.

 

But López did allow the case to proceed, in part, on the claim of “private inurement” — the question of whether the inaugural committee used their funds for private benefit and not for nonprofit purposes — which means the case could proceed to trial.

 

The ruling removed the Trump Organization as a named defendant in the case, yet still keeps the former president’s Washington hotel as a named defendant, as well as the inaugural committee itself.

 

The judge ordered a status hearing be held in February to determine how the remaining parties want to proceed.

“I’m asking every House member

“Send the infrastructure bill to my desk, send the Build Back Better bill to the Senate. Let’s build on incredible economic progress. Build on what we’ve already done. And this will be such a boost when it occurs,” he added.

 

The president celebrated its passage Saturday morning, saying, “Finally it’s Infrastructure week.”

 

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was pressed minutes earlier at the same briefing on when the president will sign the infrastructure package. He did not reveal a date and referred to the White House.

The infrastructure bill’s passage comes as House Democrats also look to pass Biden’s Build Back Better Act, a $1.75 trillion social and environmental spending bill. Iran Wants Guarantees the US Won’t Leave JCPOA Again if Deal Is Revived

 

Negotiations to revive the JCPOA are set to resume November 29

 

On Monday, Iran said the US should provide guarantees that it would not withdraw from the nuclear deal again if the agreement is restored. Indirect negotiations to revive the JCPOA are set to resume on November 29th in Vienna after a long pause.

 

“The US should show that it has the capability and will to provide guarantees that it will not abandon the deal again if the talks to revive the deal succeed,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said.

 

Last month, a report from Responsible Statecraft revealed that President Biden couldn’t guarantee that he would stay in the JCPOA during his term in office in the initial round of talks that lasted from June to April.

 

Since the US unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 by imposing sanctions, Iran has good reason to be concerned that it would happen again. In an apparent response to the Responsible Statecraft report, President Biden released a joint statement with the leaders of France, Britain, and Germany that said he is committed to returning the US to “full compliance with the JCPOA and to stay in full compliance” if Iran does the same.

 

Khatibzadeh also called on the Biden administration to lift sanctions and drop the Trump administration’s policy, known as the “maximum pressure campaign” against Iran. He said “nothing will change in Vienna” if this hardline stance again Iran continues.

 

The Biden administration has been clear that it has no plans to lift all Trump-era sanctions on Iran, only those they deem “inconsistent with the JCPOA.” This forced Iran to negotiate limited sanctions relief in the first rounds of talks, but the two sides remained far apart on key issues.

Major Internet Disruption Hits Multiple States

 

A massive Comcast Xfinity outage left several areas across the country without service Tuesday morning, NJ.com reported.

 

Reports of people experiencing unsteady or nonexistent internet access began in the San Francisco Bay Area late Monday, NJ.com reported. The outage then spread to Northern California, as well the northeast, midwest, Pacific Northwest.

 

Downdetector showed a massive spike in reports starting at 7:46 a.m. Tuesday, peaking around 8:46 a.m, with more than 54,000 outages. The widespread nature of the outage led a county sheriff in San Francisco to tweet people not to call 911 to ask why the internet was down.

 

“We are experiencing abnormal traffic to our network or… the service or servers on it are not currently available,” Xfinity’s outage page displayed Tuesday morning, The Verge reported. Some people reported having a difficult time navigating to the website or getting through to the service provider by phone.

 

Many Xfinity customers took to social media to voice their frustrations with the outages. “Just spent the last half an hour or so fretting over my modem and getting automatically disconnected from Xfinity’s customer service line, only to go on Twitter and see that it’s a nationwide mess!” one person tweeted.

 

“Our teams are actively working to bring impacted customers back online, as we continue to investigate,” Xfinity’s official Twitter account replied to another dissatisfied customer. “We apologize to those who have been affected.”

 

Comcast Xfinity did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Egypt: 630 doctors died of covid

 

Some 630 medical personnel have died as a result of the coronavirus in Egypt, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate announced yesterday.

 

"Seven new doctors have died of coronavirus in the last 24 hours," the syndicate said in a statement amid reports of rising numbers of infections across the North African country.

 

The statement added that the fatalities included "Ahmed Seddik Alam El Din from the Suez province, Hala Mohamed Abu Ghusaiyba from the Tanta province, Mostafa Sayed Abdel Hafez from Kafr El-Sheikh, and Mohamed Ali Hammouda from Benha."

The Egyptian government has been under heavy criticism since the start of the coronavirus pandemic for corruption and failing to invest in its own healthcare system which is on the verge of collapse.

 

Several health care professionals have been arrested and detained for questioning the government's official death toll which is thought to be roughly 13 times higher than what is announced.

 

Egypt ranks fifth worldwide for underreporting coronavirus.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is calling for a series of investigations into Rep. Paul Gosar after the Arizona Republican took to Twitter this week to advertise violence against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and President Biden.

Report says government was alarmed by Washington’s move, and saw it as an implicit accusation that it is harming American interests

 

Israel is lobbying the United States to reverse its blacklisting last week of surveillance company NSO Group, The New York Times reported late Monday.

 

NSO Group was blacklisted by the United States for developing and supplying “spyware to foreign governments that used these tools to maliciously target government officials, journalists, businesspeople, activists, academics, and embassy workers,” according to a US Commerce Department statement.

 

The Israeli firm has faced a torrent of international criticism over allegations it helps governments spy on dissidents and rights activists. NSO insists its product is meant only to assist countries in fighting crime and terrorism.

 

Citing two unnamed senior Israeli officials, the report said Washington’s recent move has alarmed Jerusalem. It said Israel views the accusation that NSO acted against US interests as an implicit accusation against Israel, which licenses its software.

 

Now, Israel will try to convince US President Joe Biden’s administration that the activities of NSO and a second blacklisted firm, Candiru, “remain of great importance to the national security of both countries,” the report said.

 

Jerusalem is willing to agree to much tighter supervision on its licensing of NSO’s software, the officials were quoted as saying.

"The vaccination rate currently stands at 400 per 100,000 of the population. The rate is the highest in the Kalmykia, Tyumen, Penza, Lipetsk, Kirov and Primorsky regions as well as in the Chukotka and Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous regions," he pointed out.

What are the broader implications of NSO for Israel-US relations?

 

Is it time for the Israeli government to finally come out and more formally admit that NSO Group has (allegedly) been working with it behind-the-scenes both in terms of normalization initiatives and in terms of combating terrorism?

 

The New York Times reported late Monday that Israel is getting ready to open a campaign to convince the US to drop NSO from its Commerce Department blacklist.

But this report should not come as a surprise to anyone who has followed news about NSO in recent years.

 

Back in July, Defense Minister Benny Gantz took it upon himself to personally travel to Paris to argue on NSO’s behalf to French President Emmanuel Macron and to make it clear that the cyberespionage firm was not spying on him.

This came after 17 media organizations worldwide tore NSO apart in the eyes of the public over allegations that its spyware had been used by autocratic regimes to spy on human rights activists, journalists and foreign officials.

 

Last week, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Macron met at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, with Bennett promising to be more transparent regarding the controversy and trying to smooth over the issue with the French premier.

The bottom line was that the prime minister himself was weighing in personally on behalf of NSO.

 

Back in November 2019, The Jerusalem Post reported that NSO may be being used by the Israeli government to conduct business and improve relations with moderate Sunni countries – later identified as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Oman.

 

If Israel could help those governments with cyber tools to fight jihadists, those governments might be more dependent on Jerusalem and more ready to normalize.

When Amnesty International tried to get the Tel Aviv District Court to cancel NSO’s export license in January 2020, there were around two dozen Defense Ministry and other government officials in court to jump to its defense.

 

This was more officials than came with former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the High Court of Justice in 2016 to fight for preserving his major natural gas policy.

So it has been clear for some time how deeply invested the Israeli government was in NSO and its continued operations.

Massacres And Lethal Incidents Leave Scores Dead In Niger

 

The population of Niger is suffering from increasingly violent terrorist attacks in recent months.

 

On November 2nd, Islamic extremists have killed 69 people in the latest attack in the volatile border region near Mali. This happened when terrorists ambushed a self-defense brigade in western Niger.

 

The violence took place earlier this week near Banibangou, about 155 miles (250 kilometers) north of the capital, Niamey.

 

The town’s mayor was among those killed in the Tuesday attack with 15 members of the village defense group sustaining various degrees of injuries, the statement said.

 

The local self-defense groups have been helping Niger’s military to fight extremists who have intensified attacks on civilians this year blamed on Islamic State-linked militants.

 

Some of their frustrations were shared with President Mohamed Bazoum when he paid a condelence visit to the town.

 

“The bandits terrorise us too much, we don’t know the reasons, why there is still no peace in Banibangou, we really try to understand, we are killed again and again, we are robbed, we are tortured and we don’t know for what reasons.” Kallam Tinni, the traditional chief of Banibangou said at the town meeting with the President.

 

Habsatou Ali, a resident of the town also spoke of the disturbing situation.

 

“Since the beginning of this insecurity, it is no longer good to live in Banibangou, there is hunger, there is thirst, we don’t have peace of mind, we don’t even sleep anymore, one day we tell you to be careful, we have seen columns of motorcycles, the bandits are coming to kill us, life has really become hard here, the women and children are particularly in turmoil.”

18 people are reported dead after an artisanal gold mine in the Maradi region of southern Niger, near Nigeria collapsed on November 7th.

 

Mayor of Dan Issa, Adamou Guéraou told the AFP, “The provisional death toll is 18, which we buried this morning. There were also seven injured in hospital,” He added, Nigerian nationals were among the injured.

 

The accident occurred at the mining site in the village of Garin-Liman, not far from the border with Nigeria, Guéraou said.

 

Discovered a few months ago, the Garin-Liman mines attract thousands of artisanal gold miners who mine with the hope of making a living.

 

Finally, on November 8th, More than 20 children were killed and dozens injured when a fire broke out in a school in Niger’s second-largest city – Maradi.

 

Three school classrooms made with straw were consumed by the fire, killing children aged between three and eight, local media reported.

Someone Was Caught Taking Secret Video of Rittenhouse Jury Following Threat

 

Police caught an unidentified person taking video of the jury in the Kyle Rittenhouse case just days after a friend of George Floyd threatened to do just that on social media.

 

Before the trial got underway on the sixth day of testimony, a police lieutenant reported to the judge that someone had been caught recording images of the jury as they arrived at the pick-up point where police transport jurors to the Kenosha County Courthouse.

 

According to the judge, the police officer made the individual erase the video on their cell phone. It’s not clear if that person was banned from the courthouse according to the judge.

 

Judge Bruce Schroeder said that if it happened again officers should confiscate the camera equipment.

Joint global ransomware operation sees arrests and criminal network dismantled

 

 

Singapore – A four-year operation across five continents has disrupted a ransomware cybercrime gang and seen the arrest of seven suspects believed to be behind global malware crime operations.

 

Codenamed ‘Quicksand’ (GoldDust) and carried out by 19 law enforcement agencies in 17 countries, the transcontinental operation saw officers collect and examine intelligence to establish a global threat picture about attacks by ransomware families - particularly GandCrab and Revil-Sodinokibi - and the suspects behind them.

 

The organized crime group that used these malwares is known for breaking into business and private networks using a range of infiltration techniques, and then deploying ransomware against their victims. The ransomware then encrypts files which are then used to blackmail companies and people into paying huge ransoms.

 

The suspects arrested during Operation Quicksand are suspected of perpetrating tens of thousands of ransomware infections and demanding more than EUR 200 million in ransom

Tangible results: multiple arrests worldwide

 

Intelligence exchanged during the operation enabled

 

Korean law enforcement to arrest three suspects in February, April and October;

Kuwaiti authorities to arrest a man thought to have carried out ransomware attacks using the GandGrab ransomware;

Romanian authorities to arrest two individuals suspected of ransomware cyber-attacks and believed to be responsible for 5,000 infections as well as half a million euros profit in ransom payments;

The arrest of a man believed to be responsible for the Kaseya ransomware attack, thought to have been carried out last July by the REvil gang with more than 1,500 people and 1,000 businesses affected worldwide.

 

“Ransomware has become too large of a threat for any entity or sector to address alone; the magnitude of this challenge urgently demands united global action which INTERPOL can uniquely facilitate as a neutral and trusted global partner,” said INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock.

 

“Policing needs to harness the insights of the cyber security industry to identify and disrupt cyber criminals as part of a true coalition, working together to reduce the global impact of ransomware cybercrime,” added the Secretary General.

Bitdefender supported operations by releasing tailor-made decryption tools to unlock ransomware and enable victims to recover files. These innovative tools enabled more than 1,400 companies to decrypt their networks, saving them almost EUR 475 million in potential losses.

 

KPN, McAfee, S2W helped investigations by providing cyber and malware technical expertise to INTERPOL and its member countries.

 

Operation Quicksand continues to supply evidence that is feeding into further cybercrime investigations and enabling the international police community to disrupt numerous channels used by cybercriminals to launder cryptocurrency and commit ransomware crime.

 

With the combined global financial impact in ransom payments from ransomware families believed to be within the billions of dollars and thousands of victims worldwide, INTERPOL’s private partners and member countries work together to provide support to victims hit by the ransomware.

 

Research from Chainalysis found that criminals made USD 350 million in 2020 from ransomware payments, representing an increase of 311 per cent in one year. Over the same period, the average ransom payment increased by 171 per cent, according to Palo Alto Networks.

Disease outbreak warning as 70m under threat from fatal parasitic illness in Africa

SCIENTISTS are sounding the alarm bells on a deadly parasitic disease that threatens the lives of millions of people across Africa, according to new research.

 

Sleeping sickness or Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) has been a known cause of concern for sub-Saharan Africa since the 19th century. The parasite-borne disease attacks the central nervous system and is endemic to 36 countries, where it is carried by infected tsetse flies. HAT infections take one of two forms, depending on the specific parasite involved, and according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease is considered fatal if left untreated.

 

The WHO said: "Sleeping sickness threatens millions of people in 36 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. "Many of the affected populations live in remote rural areas with limited access to adequate health services, which complicates the surveillance and therefore the diagnosis and treatment of cases. "In addition, displacement of populations, war and poverty are important factors that facilitate transmission."

 

The two forms of HAT are caused by two species of parasites belonging to the Trypanosoma genus. These are the Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, which is found in 24 countries in west and central Africa, and the Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense found in 13 eastern and southern African nations.

 

It is estimated the illness puts about 70 million people in sub-Saharan Africa at risk and has been branded a "major killer disease".

 

A new study published by researchers at the University of Glasgow has analysed how the disease develops, which could help health officials better diagnose and treat the two-stage disease (early and late).

 

With the aid of lab mice, the researchers found that a range of host genes controlling the development of central nervous system disease are activated earlier than thought - even earlier than the disease's neurological hallmarks.

 

The findings, which were published in the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, could explain why the neurological symptoms appear early on, seemingly out of sync with the accepted disease progression from early to late stage.

 

This may explain why the parasites can enter the central nervous system so quickly after infection. The disease is mostly transmitted through the bite of tsetse flies, although the vectors of transmission are varied. For instance, mother-to-child infection can occur when the trypanosome enters the placenta and infects a fetus.

Accidental infections have been known to occur in laboratories due to pricks with contaminated needles. The WHO claimed there have also been reports of the parasite being transmitted during sex.

 

In the first stage of sleeping sickness, the so-called haemo-lymphatic stage, victims experience fever, headaches, joint pain, itching and swollen lymph nodes. Treatment is much easier to apply at this stage as it is relatively non-toxic. In the late or second stage, the encephalitic stage, the disease becomes more toxic and much harder to treat. Until now, it was believed the second stage occurred when the parasites crossed the brain-blood barrier to infect the central nervous system. But there is a growing body of evidence to suggest the disease can cause neurological problems during the early stage.

 

According to the WHO, how far the disease has progressed depends on certain levels of white blood cells in the cerebrospinal fluid - the clear liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. But there have been reported cases of patients who appeared to have no or very few white blood cells in the cerebrospinal fluid, despite showing late-stage symptoms. Professor Peter Kennedy CBE at the University of Glasgow said: "Our work offers important new insights into this fatal disease, and has potential implications for not only our understanding the nature of sleeping sickness, but our treatment of patients when diagnosed with it as well. "Finding that host genes controlling the development of central nervous system disease are activated much earlier than previously after initial infection, calls into question the basis of dividing the disease into distinct early and late stages, and indicate that the disease development is complex and depends on a wide range of interacting factors."

Project Veritas Founder: FBI Agents Handcuffed Me, Threw Me Against Wall During Raid

 

Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe responded to a weekend FBI search of his apartment during an interview on Monday, saying agents handcuffed him and threw him against a wall.

 

In his first public remarks about the matter, O’Keefe confirmed the FBI raid at his Westchester County, New York, home after neighbors told media outlets over the weekend that agents showed up at his door on Saturday. Agents also searched the homes of Project Veritas associates a day earlier, O’Keefe confirmed in a video posted to Vertias’ YouTube channel.

 

“I woke up to a pre-dawn raid,” O’Keefe told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “Banging on my door, I went to my door to answer the door and there were 10 FBI agents with a battering ram, white blinding lights, they turned me around, handcuffed me, and threw me against the hallway. I was partially clothed in front of my neighbors. They confiscated my phone. They raided my apartment.”

 

Last week, O’Keefe said that Veritas associates’ homes were raided after the group allegedly received the missing diary of President Joe Biden’s daughter, Ashley. It was never published, he said.

 

His phone had reporters’ notes from sources unrelated to the Ashley Biden diary as well as confidential donor information, O’Keefe said. Agents spent about two hours searching his apartment, and two of his phones were confiscated.

 

“This is an attack on the First Amendment by the Department of Justice,” he said. “I’ve heard ‘the process is the punishment.’ I didn’t really understand what that meant until this weekend. And Sean, I wouldn’t wish this on any journalist,” he continued.

 

O’Keefe’s attorney Paul Calli, who appeared next to the Project Veritas founder in the interview, said Project Veritas paid alleged tipsters for the diary for “the right to publish the material.” The group instead handed it over to local law enforcement, he added.

 

O’Keefe then added that journalists need to stand against the FBI’s alleged targeting of his group.

 

“A source comes to us with information, I didn’t even decide to publish it. If they can do this to me, if they can do it to this journalist and raid my home and take my reporter notes, they’ll do it to any journalist,” O’Keefe remarked. “This is about something very fundamental in this country. I don’t know which direction this country is going in. But journalists everywhere have to rise up because we broke no laws here. If they can do it to me, they’ll do it to anybody.”

 

In a statement on YouTube on Friday, O’Keefe said he was told in a grand jury indictment to not discuss the FBI search but decided to speak out after New York Times reporters contacted Project Veritas reporters for comment within an hour of the raids being carried out. He then questioned how the NY Times obtained information about the searches and what they were about.

 

The Epoch Times has contacted the FBI for comment.

 

Over the weekend, an FBI spokesperson confirmed that “a court-authorized law enforcement action” was carried out “in furtherance of an ongoing investigation” in response to questions about O’Keefe’s home being searched.

Fringe Docs Literally Met at Horse Center to Flog Ivermectin

he FDA made clear its view of those who seek to treat COVID-19 with a variation on the veterinary deworming drug ivermectin.

 

“You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it,” the regulatory agency tweeted.

 

That did not prevent a group of fringe doctors who nevertheless advocate its use against the virus from gathering on Saturday at the World Equestrian Center (WEC) in Ocala, Florida.

 

The event was organized by Dr. John Littell, who has a family practice in the area. Littell told The Daily Beast that he chose the venue because it can hold a big crowd and was the site of “Sequins and Saddles: An Evening with Governor Ron DeSantis” last month. Littell said he had not even thought of the horse connection.

 

“It’s a funny thing,” he said.

 

Littell noted that DeSantis had sought his advice about masks last year.

 

“A sham,” he recalled telling the governor. “It’s all just a show.”

 

These days Littell is more focused on ivermectin and is busy writing prescriptions for folks in other states who cannot get a local physician to do it. He is also continually writing medical exemptions from vaccine mandates. And that imparts an added twist to the venue he chose for the gathering. Horses arriving at the WEC must be accompanied by written proof that they have been vaccinated for Equine Herpes Virus and Equine Influenza.

 

“WEC Ocala takes horse and horse herd safety and welfare very seriously,” the center’s website says.

 

The meeting was held in a large conference room whose podium is stenciled with a horsehead. The featured speakers included Dr. Pierre Kory of Wisconsin. He is a bigtime advocate of ivermectin for human use, beyond its approved applications for head lice and some parasites. He spoke to the gathering of what he likes to call “pharmageddon.”

 

“A PR campaign designed to destroy the latest in a long line of repurposed drugs that they’ve sought to destroy for decades,” he said. “Ivermectin is the one.”

 

He contended that the pharmaceutical industry was “spooked” by soaring sales of a drug cheap enough to be used on livestock. He praised Aaron Rogers, the Green Bay Packers quarterback whose positive COVID test led to him revealing he is unvaccinated. Rogers was placing his faith in ivermectin.

 

“He said some sensational things,” Kory continued. “He’s not confused about how to navigate the world right now. He’s like, number one, we’re giving billions to pharma. They try to attack these cheap drugs. He says, ‘I have a strong belief in these cheap drugs.”

 

Among the other speakers was Dr. Peter McCullough, a Texas cardiologist who until six months ago was vice chief of internal medicine at Baylor University Medical Center. His former employer is suing him for continuing to use his former title in media interviews. Baylor apparently does not want to be associated with somebody who has said such reckless things as nobody under 50 has reason to get the shot. He has also claimed that the vaccine has killed 50,000 Americans.

 

McCullough stood at the horsehead podium and offered his cracked view of a pandemic in which COVID-19 has killed 700,000 of us.

 

“It’s a battle of man versus the virus,” he said. “But I think in many ways it’s a battle of good versus evil.”

 

That drew big applause from the roughly 900 in attendance.

 

“I told Tucker Carlson that when I came off set, “ he said, apparently referring to a Fox News appearance.

 

Evil in McCullough’s view being those who advocate masks and vaccines and other proven ways to save lives. Good being people such as Carlson and himself, who have said masks and vaccine do not work, but ivermectin does.

 

“Anyone who attempts to block treatment for COVID-19 is participating in what is in my view an immoral, unethical and, from a civil perspective, illegal activity,” he said.

 

McCullough said that the ultimate answer is upon us in the form of natural immunity. We just have to do nothing.

 

“The war is over,” McCullough said. “No more masks. You don’t have to worry about it any more.”

 

He went on, “Natural immunity is the way to break the grip of fear. We no longer need to be fearful with respect to COVID-19. Show your boldness! Show that you’re not afraid!”

 

What McCullough describes as good is actually evil enough when it comes to adults. But in the days ahead it will be focused on kids. The argument among those at the Florida summit is that the vaccine is a greater threat to children than the virus, which is not even close to true. One of the doctors in a question and answer said that giving kids the shot was using them as ”human shields.” Such falsehoods result in dead youngsters.

 

Maybe Disney World would be the perfect place for the next Florida Summit on the virus.

 

But wait. Evil has visited the Magic Kingdom in the form of an employee vaccine mandate.

 

Meanwhile, although McCullough has declared the war is over, Littell ended the day by going to see a patient who is hospitalized with COVID.

 

“Forty-eight years old, 300-plus pounder,” he told the Daily Beast as he was en route. “We can get them better, but not everybody turns around as quickly as everyone else.”

President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda would hike the average top tax rate on personal income in the United States to the highest level in the developed world, according to an analysis by the Tax Foundation.

 

The $1.75 trillion proposal currently before the House of Representatives would end up raising the average top tax rate on personal income in the US to a whopping 57.4 percent, the highest in the 38-member Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, according to the analysis.

 

That’s up from the US’ current nationwide average top tax rate of 42.9 percent, which lands squarely in the middle when compared with the other OECD countries, according to the Tax Foundation, a Washington, DC-based think tank.

 

The new rate under Biden’s proposal would push the US top tax rate even higher than Japan’s notoriously cumbersome 55.9 percent average top income tax.

 

The top tax rate in a handful of blue states, including New York, California and New Jersey, would be even higher than the nationwide average at 66.2 percent, 64.7 percent and 63.2 percent, respectively, according to the analysis.

 

But under Biden’s plan, even residents of low-tax states like Wyoming, Washington and Texas will still face a top income tax rate of at least 51.4 percent due to the federal levy, the analysis shows.
