Tapeworms found in man’s brain years after he ate feces-tainted food

On a night that seemed like any other, a perfectly healthy 38-year-old man in Massachusetts fell from his bed amid a violent seizure at 4 am. The commotion woke his wife, who found her husband on the floor, shaking and "speaking gibberish." He was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital.

There, doctors witnessed the man have a two-minute-long tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure, in which he lost consciousness and his muscles aggressively contracted. Doctors began the painstaking process of trying to piece together what was wrong by performing a battery of tests and interviewing his family.

By nearly every account, the man was in very good health. He had no history of seizures or of any cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, or neurologic disorders. His toxicology screens were clear. He took no medications, prescribed or over-the-counter. He didn't smoke and rarely drank. There was no evidence that anything had happened to him recently that would provoke a seizure; the man had spent the previous day with his children, then he had dinner with his brother, who reported nothing out of the ordinary. The only initial hint of the diagnosis to come was that the man had immigrated to Boston from a rural area of Guatemala about 20 years earlier.

But when doctors performed a CT (computed tomography) scan of his head, they quickly narrowed the possibilities. The scan revealed three calcified lesions in his brain, and doctors homed in on the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis. In other words, larval cysts from a pork tapeworm had migrated to his head years ago and nestled into various parts of his brain. The doctors documented their work on the man's illness in a case study published on Thursday, November 11, in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Gut to brain

Learning about the path to neurocysticercosis is not for the weak of stomach; it's a cruddy calamity as nauseating as it is dangerous. The pork tapeworms, Taenia solium, typically tuck into human intestines, where they can grow to a shocking length of two to eight meters. The worm's victims, meanwhile, expel parasitic eggs in their feces. If that egg-laden excrement makes its way into an environment with pigs, the pigs can carry out the worm's life cycle by ingesting the eggs.

In the pig's stomach, gastric acid prompts the eggs to lose their protective coating and hatch into larval cysts, called oncospheres. These can penetrate the intestinal wall and take a ride through the pig's body via the circulatory system. They eventually burrow into the pig's muscles and lie in wait as cysticerci—which are typically not a bother for the pig.

But if a human ends up eating undercooked pork containing those larval cysts, the life cycle continues. In a human gastrointestinal tract, the worm emerges from its cystic form and sinks its hooks and four suckers into the human's upper intestines. There, it can happily slurp away for years, growing its ribbon-like body meters long and shedding more eggs. And the life cycle begins again.

Things go sideways, however, when a human—not a pig—ends up eating the worm's eggs. This can happen in a nauseating scenario in which someone infected with a tapeworm happens to have bad hygiene and also prepares food. In other words, a poopy-handed tapeworm victim contaminates a meal. In this case, the eggs hatch in the human's stomach, as they do in pigs. The larval cysts can end up in a human's muscles (cysticercosis), but they can also migrate to the eyes and brain (neurocysticercosis). This is a dead end for the worm and can develop into a big problem for the human.

In a human brain, the cyst goes through four stages. At first, it quietly lies in wait as a viable worm, provoking little to no immune responses—and thus no symptoms. This stage can last many years. But over time, the cyst degenerates and leaks fluid that alerts the immune system that a parasite is present, prompting a strong response. The cyst degenerates further and forms a nodule in the brain. Finally, the nodule becomes a calcified granuloma. Seizures have been associated with the inflammatory responses linked to the late-stage calcification.

Neurocysticercosis is the most common parasitic infection of the human brain and can cause headaches, confusion, balance problems, seizures, and even death. The disease is also the most common cause of acquired epilepsy. It's endemic in areas of Asia and Central America.

Given all of the medical information on the 38-year-old patient and his history of living in rural Guatemala, the doctors determined that neurocysticercosis was the most likely cause of his abrupt seizure and brain lesions.

After he was initially brought to the hospital, he was given multiple doses of an antiseizure medication, intubated, and transferred to the neurosciences intensive care unit. When he was stabilized and extubated, doctors began a treatment of two antiparasitic drugs and an anti-inflammatory drug, and they continued use of antiseizure medication. He was released from the hospital five days later with no remaining neurological symptoms or seizures.

Doctors followed up with him over the course of three years. Months after treatment, additional brain scans found that the swelling around the largest lesion in his right frontal lobe had gone down. He also remained seizure-free, though he was still taking his antiseizure medication. Because the calcified lesions will stay with him, it's unclear if or when he can stop taking the medication.

Judge Orders DOJ to Stop Extracting Data from James O’Keefe’s Phone

A federal court on Nov. 11 ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to stop extracting and reviewing data from phones belonging to Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe.

The order from Judge Analisa Torres of the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York says that by Nov. 12, the DOJ “shall confirm via email that it has paused its extraction and review of the contents of Petitioner O’Keefe’s phones.”

It comes after O’Keefe filed a motion Nov. 10 for appointment of a special master—a designation often used for people doing purely investigative work.

Torres furthermore ordered the DOJ to provide the court with a response to O’Keefe’s motion by Nov. 16, and for O’Keefe to provide the court with its reply, if any, by Nov. 19.

O’Keefe’s home in Westchester County, New York, was raided early Nov. 6 by the FBI. He later confirmed the raid.

“Banging on my door, I went to my door to answer the door and there were 10 FBI agents with a battering ram, white blinding lights. They turned me around, handcuffed me, and threw me against the hallway,” O’Keefe told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Nov. 8. “I was partially clothed in front of my neighbors. They confiscated my phone. They raided my apartment.”

The Project Veritas founder had previously announced in a statement Nov. 5 that current and former Project Veritas employees’ homes were searched by FBI agents.

An FBI spokesman told The Associated Press on the same day that agents had conducted a “court-authorized law enforcement activity” at an apartment in Manhattan and an address in Mamaroneck in Westchester County, New York. The spokesman did not appear to comment on whether the searches were linked to Project Veritas.

In the same statement, O’Keefe said that the DOJ—specifically the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York—appeared to be investigating the alleged theft of a diary of Ashley Biden, the daughter of President Joe Biden.

“We don’t know if it was, but it begs the question: in what world is the alleged theft of a diary investigated by the President’s FBI and his Department of Justice? A diary! This federal investigation smacks of politics. Project Veritas never threatened or engaged in any illegal conduct,” O’Keefe said.

The New York Times was likely notified of the raid by the Stasi FBI.

“The F.B.I. carried out search warrants in New York as part of a Justice Department investigation into how pages from Ashley Biden’s journal came to be published by a right-wing website,” New York Times reported.

An hour after the raid was conducted, The New York Times contacted one of the reporters to ask for comment on this confidential investigation.

The New York Times was the first to break the story. They even reached out for comment, after his home was raided at 6 a.m.

In October 2020, Ashley Biden contacted the feds and reported several items were stolen in a burglary, including her diary.

Project Veritas never published pages of Ashley Biden’s diary, however, another conservative site did.

“We never break the law,” he said, railing against the F.B.I.’s investigation into members of his group for possible involvement in the reported theft of a diary kept by President Biden’s daughter, Ashley. “In fact, one of our ethical rules is to act as if there are 12 jurors on our shoulders all the time.”

Project Veritas has long occupied a gray area between investigative journalism and political spying, and internal documents obtained by The New York Times reveal the extent to which the group has worked with its lawyers to gauge how far its deceptive reporting practices can go before running afoul of federal laws.

The documents, a series of memos written by the group’s lawyer, detail ways for Project Veritas sting operations — which typically diverge from standard journalistic practice by employing people who mask their real identities or create fake ones to infiltrate target organizations — to avoid breaking federal statutes such as the law against lying to government officials.

The documents show, for example, Project Veritas operatives’ concern that an operation launched in 2018 to secretly record employees at the F.B.I., Justice Department and other agencies in the hope of exposing bias against President Donald J. Trump might violate the Espionage Act — the law passed at the height of World War I that has typically been used to prosecute spies.

“Because intent is relevant — and broadly defined — ensuring PV journalists’ intent is narrow and lawful would be paramount in any operation,” the group’s media lawyer, Benjamin Barr, wrote in response to questions from the group about using the dating app Tinder to have its operatives meet government employees, potentially including some with national security clearances.

In a separate July 2017 memorandum, Mr. Barr emailed a representative of the group that the criminal statute involving false statements to federal officials “continues to be an expansive, dangerous law that inhibits Veritas’s operations.”

The documents give new insight into the workings of the group at a time when it faces potential legal peril in the diary investigation — and has signaled that its defense will rely in part on casting itself as a journalistic organization protected by the First Amendment.

The F.B.I. last week searched the homes of Mr. O’Keefe and two former Project Veritas operatives — Eric Cochran and Spencer Meads — as part of the investigation into the reported theft of Ms. Biden’s diary. Mr. O’Keefe has acknowledged receiving a grand jury subpoena in the case.

Mr. O’Keefe said the F.B.I. took his phones, which had confidential donor and source information. He said that neither he nor his group had done anything wrong, and that the F.B.I. searches were an assault on the First Amendment.

The legal documents obtained by The Times were written several years ago, at a time when Project Veritas was remaking itself from a small operation running on a shoestring budget to a group more closely modeled on a small intelligence-gathering organization.

During the Trump administration, the group saw a flood of new donations from both private donors and conservative foundations, and hired former American and British intelligence and military operatives to train Project Veritas agents in spycraft.

In a statement issued by one of its lawyers, Project Veritas said it “stands behind these legal memos and is proud of the exhaustive work it does to ensure each of its journalism investigations complies with all applicable laws.”

John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia hoax went hot recently with the indictment of Igor Danchenko,

the chief source of the infamous Steele Dossier. As RedState reported, Danchenko was charged with multiple counts of lying

to the FBI, representing the biggest escalation yet in Durham’s quest.

But the revelation that Danchenko had lied to the FBI goes past just implicating him. It also implicates the FBI and DOJ as

corrupt entities that chose to weaponize a known liar to target political enemies, Donald Trump chief among them. With Durham’s

indictment, it is now confirmed that the DOJ assigned false credibility to Danchenko in a desperate attempt to validate the dossier.

As the Washington Examiner notes, John Demers, then an Assistant Attorney General to Jeff Sessions, proclaimed Danchenko

was “truthful and cooperative” while pursuing what we now know was an illegal FISA warrant on Carter Page.

'' The efforts by the DOJ and the FBI to defend the credibility of Steele’s dossier and his source were notable in 2018, the year

after Danchenko allegedly lied to the bureau, and in the midst of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Then-Assistant Attorney General John Demers told Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court Judge Rosemary Collyer in a July

2018 letter that Danchenko had been “truthful and cooperative” with the FBI. The DOJ official also defended the flawed FISA

applications against Trump campaign associate Carter Page.

Demers told the FISA court: “The Government submits that the applications, read in light go this additional information,

contain sufficient predication for the Court to have found probable cause that the target was an agent of a foreign power.” ''

But Durham’s indictment makes clear that Danchenko was not “truthful and cooperative,” and the DOJ was aware of that fact

while they continued to use the Russian as a credible source to pursue FISA warrants on Trump associates. Worse, it appears

likely that the DOJ and FBI were also aware of the Clinton campaign’s connections to the dossier and Danchenko.

You put all that together and what you have is a Jeff Sessions-led DOJ that was knowingly using someone who had lied to

them in order to pursue the political goal of taking down Donald Trump. There is no other way to spin what happened. To this

day, Sessions has yet to answer for the behavior of the department he led during that period. Perhaps someone should bother

asking him about it?

While it is encouraging that Christopher Steele’s primary source (who was being fed fake stories by a Hillary Clinton operative)

is now going to face charges for his role, it is clear that the DOJ and FBI were knee-deep in the corruption as well. The individuals

who helped perpetuate this hoax from within the confines of the federal government, up to and including ignoring criminal activity

to keep a political narrative going, should also face justice. If they don’t, the indictments Durham has made will simply serve as

a surface-level slap on the wrist. This thing has to be ripped out at the root or the lack of trust in our core institutions will remain.

Nellie Ohr, the wife of former high-ranking Justice Department (DOJ) official Bruce Ohr—both of whom played pivotal roles in the FBI’s investigation into the Trump 2016 presidential campaign—worked for the CIA as an independent contractor for as long as six years.

Ohr was hired as a researcher by Fusion GPS—the company hired by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee to produce the now-infamous Steele dossier—in 2015.

She conducted open-source research into members of the Trump campaign for Fusion GPS—which describes itself as a commercial research and strategic intelligence firm—that may have been used in the Steele dossier. She also provided her husband with a USB stick containing all her research from her time at Fusion GPS to pass on to the FBI in late 2016 after she had officially left the firm.

Prior to her work for Fusion GPS, Ohr worked for an internal open-source division of the CIA named Open Source Works from 2008 to at least June 2010; it appears likely that she remained in that role until 2014.

Notably, Open Source Works is a separate entity from the more commonly known governmental open-source division, Open Source Enterprises, formally known as Open Source Center.
