A U.S. military aircraft has crashed in Norway while participating in a NATO exercise.

 

Four people were aboard the aircraft, a Marine Corps V-22 Osprey, when it went missing Friday in poor weather conditions over rough terrain, the Norwegian Armed Forces said in a statement.

"We found it after an emergency signal was received," a spokesperson for Norway's Joint Rescue Coordination Centres told Reuters. "Because of the bad weather, we cannot get down. Police and rescue services are on their way."

 

Officials said the status of the four individuals aboard the aircraft is unknown. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

In Q pic, the string of bulbs across front of the stall, or stand, appeared to be interupted by gaps, possibly faulty bulbs. In close-up view the front eaves appears to show at least two gaps. If these are burned-out bulbs, this could provide a marker to tighten the time interval of the Q pic.

A Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey with four crew members on board crashed during a training exercise in Norway, according to the Norwegian military.

 

The Osprey was reported missing at 6:26 p.m. Central European Time, roughly 30 minutes after it was scheduled to land, Reuters reported.

 

“The Osprey was heading north in Nordland on its way to Bodø, where it was scheduled to land just before 6 pm,” a statement from the Norwegian military said. “The aircraft’s last known position was on Saltfjellet.

 

“We’ve discovered an aircraft that has crashed,” Nordland police chief of staff Bent Eilertsen told Reuters. “We’ve seen no sign of life.”

 

Bodø, located north of the Arctic Circle, was experiencing rain, heavy cloud cover and strong winds with gusts as high as 52 miles per hour, according to AccuWeather.com.

 

“The weather conditions in the area are challenging, and it is expected to get worse,” the Norwegian statement said.

 

An initial U.S. Marine Corps statement confirmed the crash, but did not say whether any service members were missing or injured, nor did it release the name of the unit the Osprey was a part of.

 

Roughly 3,000 Marines from the II Marine Expeditionary Force, headquartered in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, are in Norway as part of Cold Response, a large biannual NATO training exercise.

 

Images posted Wednesday via the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service show Marine Ospreys with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 261, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, operating out of Norwegian Air Force Base Bodø, Norway.

 

When not deployed, the squadron is based out of Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina.

Norwegian search and rescue teams were searching for the downed Osprey for nearly two hours when it picked up the vehicle’s emergency beacon, Reuters reported.

 

“We found it after an emergency signal was received,” a Norwegian official with the nation’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centres, told Reuters.

 

“Because of the bad weather, we cannot get down. Police and rescue services are on their way” by land, the official added.

 

The Marine Corps is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident, according to a tweet from the official Marine Corps account.

 

Three Marines were killed in 2017 when their MV-22B Osprey crashed off Queensland, Australia.

 

In 2015 one Marine was killed and 21 were injured when a Marine Osprey caught fire after a “hard landing” in Hawaii.

We can confirm an incident has occurred involving a Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey aircraft.

 

The aircraft was conducting training in Norway as part of Exercise COLD RESPONSE 22 at the time of the incident.

Governor Tom Wolf is taking matters into his own hands when it comes to funding upgrades for Pennsylvania’s voting machines. The move comes after he vetoed a funding bill the GOP-controlled legislature sent him during state budget negotiations.

It would have given counties $90 million to upgrade machines — about 60 percent of the up-front cost. But it also had strings attached; most crucially, an election code change that eliminated automatic straight-ticket voting.

Democrats balked, saying it might depress voter turnout.

Wolf now plans to get the $90 million without add-ons by issuing a bond through the state’s Economic Development Financing Authority. He said as far as he knows, it’s allowed as long as the agency’s board authorizes it.

Defendants allegedly defrauded donors and grant issuers, the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance and a mortgage lending business

 

BOSTON – The founders of a local nonprofit, Violence in Boston (VIB), have been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with a series of alleged schemes designed to defraud VIB and its donors, the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance and a mortgage lending business based in Chicago.

 

Monica Cannon-Grant, 41, and her husband Clark Grant, 38, both of Taunton, were charged in an 18-count indictment with two counts of wire fraud conspiracy; one count of conspiracy; 13 counts of wire fraud; and one count of making false statements to a mortgage lending business. The indictment also charges Cannon-Grant with one count of mail fraud.

 

Cannon-Grant was arrested this morning and will make her initial appearance in federal court in Boston later today. Grant was previously charged by criminal complaint in October 2021 with one count of wire fraud and one count of false statements on a loan and credit application. An arraignment date for Grant has not yet been scheduled by the Court.

 

Cannon-Grant is the founder and CEO of VIB, an anti-violence nonprofit formally established in 2017, the stated purpose of which is to reduce violence, raise social awareness and aid community causes in Boston, among other purposes. Grant is Cannon-Grant’s husband, a founding director of VIB, and until recently a full-time employee for a commuter services company since July 2018.

 

The indictment alleges that the defendants conspired to use VIB as a vehicle to solicit and receive charitable contributions from institutional and individual donors that they then used for a wide range of personal expenses and to enrich themselves while concealing such expenditures from VIB directors, officers and others. Specifically, from 2017 through at least 2020, it is alleged that Cannon-Grant and Grant exercised exclusive control over VIB financial accounts and diverted VIB money to themselves through cash withdrawals, cashed checks, debit purchases and transfers to their personal bank accounts.

 

On numerous occasions between 2017 through 2021, Cannon-Grant allegedly applied for public and private funded grants and donations in which she represented the funds were to be used for VIB charitable purposes. However, it is alleged that Cannon-Grant and Grant used grant and donation money to pay for personal expenses including, among other things, hotel reservations; groceries; gas; car rentals; auto repairs; Uber rides; restaurants; food deliveries; nail salons; and personal travel. The defendants did not disclose to other VIB directors or VIB’s bookkeepers or financial auditors that they had used VIB funds for such payments.

 

The defendants also allegedly conspired to defraud the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) by collecting Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits while at the same time collecting income from a variety of sources, including VIB funds utilized for Cannon-Grant and Grant’s personal expenses, consulting fees paid to Cannon-Grant, compensation paid directly by VIB to Cannon-Grant, and the annual salary paid to Grant by his employer for his full-time job. According to the indictment, beginning in or about May 2020 through 2021, Grant and Cannon-Grant fraudulently applied for PUA benefits, created by Congress in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, that they knew they were not eligible to receive. The defendants allegedly coordinated the submission of false online applications and certifications for PUA funds, concealed their income, used the fraudulently obtained PUA funds to pay for their joint household expenses and other personal expenditures, and created and submitted phony documentation in order to continue receiving weekly PUA COVID-19 benefits.

Not to even mention the whole Ukraine-Biden Crime Family affair that has been going on since Joe Biden was Obama’s Vice President.

 

Once you add in his rapid and catastrophic mental decline, you end up with no one, especially not the leaders of nuclear superpowers, who will take this clown seriously.

 

On Friday, the Kremlin issued a statement in response to Biden’s comments, saying that his words amount to “personal insults” against Putin that were fueled by irritation, fatigue, and forgetfulness.

The two presidents held talks via a video link on Friday, discussing various international and bilateral issues. The talks were held “at the request” of Washington, China’s Foreign Ministry noted in a statement.

 

China’s leader stressed that Beijing has always stood “for peace and opposes war,” urging all the parties involved in the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev to stick to diplomacy.

'Crime tourism' bringing burglary crews from South America to Hillsborough, other CA communities

 

HILLSBOROUGH, Calif. Law enforcement agencies call it "crime tourism" groups of thieves from South America traveling to California to burglarize homes.

Surveillance video released by Hillsborough police shows a burglary crew believed to be from South America targeting a luxury home. It's just one in a series of crimes involving burglars from out of the country, hitting homes in affluent communities up and down the state.

 

Earlier this month, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office arrested a four-man crew that robbed a home in a Camarillo neighborhood.

"This is crime tourism. They're coming here for the purpose of targeting neighborhoods," said Cmdr. Erik Buschow with the Ventura Sheriff's Office. "Specifically vehicles, homes. Not violent crimes, but they're going after the big bucks."

In the case in Camarillo, sheriff's deputies spotted the getaway car and gave chase all the way into Los Angeles. LAPD helped out in arresting the suspects.

 

Investigators say the crews will often wait for the homeowners to leave before moving in.

"They target homes that back up to golf courses and open space," Buschow said. "And they'll literally stand in the bushes and watch and when people leave, sometimes it's a two-hour window, they'll go out to dinner or something like that - they'll go in and pounce."

According to Ventura County sheriff's investigators, most of the "tourist burglary crews" are from Chile.

Paleontologists on Thursday unveiled the fossilized remains of an ancient whale that inhabited the seas 36 million years ago, found last year in a Peruvian desert. Scientists called the creature a "sea monster" that "surely did a lot of damage."

 

"We have presented the new Peruvian basilosaurus, it is the complete skull of an archaic whale that lived 36 million years ago," paleontologist Mario Urbina, head of the team that discovered the skeleton, told AFP.

 

Urbina said the basilosaurus was found at the end of 2021 in the Ocucaje Desert in the Ica department, about 215 miles south of Lima. The desolate landscape was a shallow sea millions of years ago, and its dunes have yielded large numbers of striking primitive sea mammal remains.

 

Rodolfo Salas, chief of paleontology at Peru's National University of San Marcos, said that the whale was a "sea monster."

 

"The most incredible thing is that the skull is in a very good state of preservation, it has complete teeth; it was a first-order predator, at the top of that time that fed on fish penguins; a sea monster just as they imagine it and we think it is a new species," Salas said.

 

The "Ocucaje Predator," as the researchers dubbed it, was about 55 feet long and used its massive, powerful teeth to feed on tuna, sharks and schools of sardines.

 

"When it was searching for its food, it surely did a lot of damage," Salas said, according to the Reuters news agency.

 

"This finding is very important because there are no other similar specimens discovered in the world," said Urbina, a researcher at the university.

 

Team member Rodolfo Salas-Gismondi explained the basilosaurus differs from other known ancient whale species by its size and the development of its teeth, both of which indicate the animal was likely at the top of the food chain.

 

"This is an extraordinary find because of its great state of preservation," he told AFP. "This animal was one of the largest predators of its time."

 

"At that time the Peruvian sea was warm," added Salas-Gismondi, who heads the Department of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Natural History Museum in Lima. "Thanks to this type of fossil, we can reconstruct the history of the Peruvian sea."

 

The first cetaceans, like the basilosaurus, evolved from land animals some 55 million years ago.

 

By the late Eocene period (between 56 million and 34 million years ago), cetaceans had fully adapted to marine life.

 

Whales had not yet evolved, and almost all cetaceans were marine macropredators, according to the research team.

 

The Ocucaje Desert is rich in fossils, the researchers said, providing scientists with 42 million years' worth of evolutionary evidence.

 

Other fossils found there include four-legged dwarf whales, dolphins, sharks and other species from the Miocene period, between 23 million and five million years ago.

 

The announcement in Peru comes about two months after paleontologists said they had discovered a 180-million-year-old giant "sea dragon" fossil in the United Kingdom.

DNC Emails Are Hacked

 

While every thread of SpyGate could be unraveled more, April 30, 2016, marks the cleanest point to pin the start of the intrigue. It was then, amid the contested presidential primaries, that the Democratic National Committee learned that its computer network had been breached. The DNC then hired a company called CrowdStrike to investigate the hack, and by mid-May, CrowdStrike concluded that Russian actors were responsible for the hack, which the DNC then reported to the FBI.

When Tapper asked Mook for evidence to support his claims, Mook cited unnamed experts and press reports “that the hackers that got into the DNC are very likely by to be working in coordination with Russia.”

 

“If the Russians in fact had these emails, again, I don’t think it’s very coincidental that they are being released at this time to create maximum damage on Hillary Clinton and to help Donald Trump,” Mook reiterated.

 

“It is a very, very strong charge that you’re leveling here,” Tapper interjected. “You’re basically suggesting that Russians hacked into the DNC and now are releasing these files through WikiLeaks to help elect Donald Trump.”

 

Again, Mook deflected to “a number of experts,” saying, “Experts have said that it is the Russians that, in fact, went in and took these emails. And then, if they are the ones who took them, we have to infer that they are the ones then releasing them.”

Clinton Campaign Co-Opts the Russia Collusion Hoax

 

While the Clinton campaign introduced the Russia collusion hoax on the eve of the DNC convention to convert the Sanders’ scandal into one about Trump, the strategy also proved a perfect response to the second Clinton scandal — this one involving Clinton’s illegal use of a private server during her time as secretary of state.

 

The New York Times first broke the news on March 2, 2015, that Clinton had used a private email server to communicate as secretary of state under President Barack Obama. Two days later, the Select Committee on Benghazi subpoenaed any Benghazi-related emails contained on the private server. Upon learning of the document request, a technician for Clinton’s computer service provider deleted approximately 30,000 of Clinton’s emails, which she claimed were personal emails.

 

By May of 2016, the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General had released an 83-page report condemning Clinton’s use of the server. Coverage of this report stressed that the State Department had “deemed more than 2,000 of Clinton’s messages as classified, including 22 that were upgraded to the most sensitive national security classification, ‘top secret.’” At the time, the media also noted that “the FBI is still probing whether any laws were broken laws by putting classified information at risk — or whether her staff improperly sent sensitive information knowing it wasn’t on a classified system.”

 

The Clinton campaign tried to downplay the FBI’s involvement in the private-server scandal by framing it as “a security inquiry,” but in response to questions about that characterization, then-FBI Director James Comey said he was “not familiar with the term ‘security inquiry,’” stressing “the word investigation” is “in our name.”

 

“We’re conducting an investigation. … That’s what we do. That’s probably all I can say about it,” Comey concluded.

 

At a press conference two months later, on July 5, 2016, Comey announced that the FBI had completed its investigation and that while Clinton’s handling of classified information was “extremely careless,” he had referred the matter to the Department of Justice with a recommendation that no charges be filed. Comey took this same position when he testified before Congress, there calling Clinton’s conduct related to the server “sloppy.”

 

Although Comey publicly declared the investigation into Clinton’s private server closed, when Democrats gathered for their convention in Philadelphia, her campaign continued to face questions about the scandal, with Tapper drilling Mook about Comey’s conclusion that Clinton’s use of the private server had been “sloppy.” Mook quickly changed the conversation to “this election” and what “voters are looking for and asking about in this election.”

 

Two days later, though, the media took Mook’s lead and converted the Clinton server scandal into a scandal about Trump. A July 26, 2016, opinion article for USA Today, titled “Putin for President 2016,” opened with an acknowledgment that Clinton’s “secret private-server emails are almost certainly already in the hands of Russian intelligence,” and concluded, “Putin can embarrass Hillary — or worse — whenever he wants.”

 

“We’re getting a small foretaste of that in the release of hacked Democratic National Committee emails,” the piece continued, speaking of the DNC officials engaged in “dirty tricks aimed at Bernie Sanders” and “getting awfully chummy with some allegedly professional journalists.” And with that, the media converted Clinton’s use of a private server to a story about Trump and Russia’s supposed backing of his candidacy.

 

From then on, the Clinton campaign and a complicit media framed any concern over her use of a home-brew server and any questions about the details buried in the DNC emails not as a scandal about Clinton but as a conspiracy between Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Clinton Campaign Pays for and Peddles Fake Trump-Russia Evidence

 

By the last week of July 2016, the Russia collusion diversion controlled the narrative, and Democrats repurposed every question about the DNC hack or the sever scandal as an opportunity to peddle it.

 

Similarly, Clinton’s team converted every comment by Trump, even tangentially related to Russia, as further evidence of a conspiracy. Likewise, her campaign framed every Russia connection, past or present, between Trump, his business, his family, or members of his campaign as concrete proof of collusion.

 

While the Clinton campaign had not gone public with the Russia-collusion angle until July 24, 2016, when Mook marketed that theme on CNN, it had been collecting supposed intel on Trump’s connections to Russia for some time.

 

In the first half of 2016, Perkins Coie, the law firm that represented the Clinton campaign, had hired private investigation firm Fusion GPS to collect opposition research on Trump. In turn, Fusion GPS hired Christopher Steele in May or June of 2016 to focus on Trump’s connections to Russia, and by June 20, 2016, Steele had drafted the first of some 17 memoranda that would eventually compose what is now known colloquially as the Steele dossier.

 

Steele shared his initial memorandum — which contained claims that the Kremlin had blackmail material on Trump, including the salacious and false “golden showers” accusation — with an FBI contact on July 5, 2016. Over the next six months, Steele continued to craft the dossier, relying primarily on an unnamed “Primary Sub-Source,” now known to be Russian national Igor Danchenko.

 

Danchenko, who has since been indicted for lying to the FBI, is also alleged to have invented some of the supposed intel contained in the dossier. Danchenko also fed Steele false information about the Trump campaign, which a Clinton booster had invented and then passed on to Danchenko.

 

The bottom line some five-plus years later is that the dossier consisted of a few publicly known accurate facts and a litany of false claims concocted by Danchenko and others and then sold by Steele and the Clinton campaign as the work of a former MI6 Russian expert.

 

The Steele dossier represented but one aspect of the invented evidence of collusion. The Clinton campaign also paid Perkins Coie lawyer Michael Sussmann for his work in crafting, with the assistance of various tech experts, a report purporting to show that the Trump organization had established a secret-communication network with the powerful Russian Alfa Bank.

 

Additionally, computer scientists who had worked with the Clinton campaign’s attorney “surveilled the internet traffic at Trump Tower, at his New York City apartment building, and later at the executive office of the president of the United States, then fed disinformation about that traffic to intelligence agencies hoping to frame Trump as a Russia-connected stooge.”

 

As Steele, Fusion GPS, and other Clinton backers created fraudulent reports, they, along with the Clinton campaign and her lawyers, exploited their relationships with reporters and government officials.

 

Steele and/or Fusion GPS’s founder Glenn Simpson shared Steele’s memoranda with various news outlets. They also fed the supposed intel to members of the law enforcement and intelligence communities, including representatives in the Departments of Justice and State. After the FBI fired Steele as a source because he had spoken with the media, it arranged for him to continue providing his reports to the FBI by having him meet with a Justice Department attorney instead.

 

This dual-prong approach resulted in a public saturated with circular confirmation of Trump-Russia collusion. Outlets parroted the false details fed to reporters by Steele and then referenced the FBI’s investigations into the same matters to create the appearance that the investigations confirmed the validity of the leaks. Simultaneously, the FBI used media reports as a basis to confirm Steele’s supposed intel.

Obama Admin Spies on Trump Campaign Under Knowingly False Pretenses

 

On July 31, 2016, the Obama administration and the FBI launched an investigation into the Trump campaign, branded “Crossfire Hurricane.” While to this day, the FBI maintains it opened Crossfire Hurricane after U.S. officials learned from an Australian diplomat that young Trump adviser George Papadopoulos had bragged “that the Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton,” former Attorney General William Barr and Special Counsel John Durham have both questioned that account.

 

The Obama administration’s targeting of the opposition party’s presidential campaign came just as the Clinton campaign began publicly pushing the narrative that Trump was colluding with Russia to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. And the opening of Crossfire Hurricane came three days after then-CIA Director John Brennan briefed President Barack Obama and other senior national security officials on intelligence alleging “that U.S. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had approved a campaign plan to stir up a scandal against U.S. Presidential candidate Donald Trump by tying him to Putin and the Russians’ hacking of the Democratic National Committee.”

 

Brennan’s briefing also noted that intelligence agencies had obtained intel indicating that on July 26, 2016, Clinton approved “a proposal from one of her foreign policy advisors to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by Russian security services.” In early September 2016, a U.S. intelligence official would forward an investigative referral to the FBI regarding “Clinton’s approval of a plan” about “Trump and Russian hackers hampering U.S. elections as a means of distracting the public from her use of a private mail server.”

 

Even with this foreknowledge of the Clinton campaign’s plot to frame Trump, and even while watching the execution of the plan in real time, the FBI moved forward with Crossfire Hurricane. The FBI would also later use Steele’s fraudulent reporting to obtain four court orders from the secret FISA court to surveil a former Trump campaign volunteer named Carter Page.

 

While Page was no longer connected to the campaign when the FBI obtained the FISA surveillance orders, the warrant allowed the FBI to access prior correspondence between Page and the Trump campaign, as well as any communications Page continued to have with individual campaign members. Further, while FISA proceedings are secret, media leaks about the targeting of Page gave the press more material to further the Russia-collusion spin.

 

Accessing private campaign emails, however, represented but one aspect of the spying that took place under the auspices of Crossfire Hurricane. The FBI also tasked a Confidential Human Source (CHS) with questioning Page, and that CHS “sought specific details from Page related to the Trump campaign, and fed Page unsolicited (and potentially illegal) advice concerning campaign strategy.”

 

The FBI used the same CHS to question Sam Clovis, a senior member of the Trump campaign. In a recorded conversation, the CHS posed several questions about sensitive campaign strategies and concerns.

 

The spying on Trump’s campaign also included the FBI using a private Trump security briefing as a possible opportunity to collect information for the investigation.

Investigation into Trump Continues During His Administration

 

Significantly, Crossfire Hurricane did not end with the 2016 election. Instead, after Trump defeated Clinton, the investigation continued and so did the leaks, with Comey giving Trump a briefing on the Steele dossier — a fact then leaked to give CNN a pretext to report on the Steele dossier.

 

After Trump’s inauguration, the FBI hatched a plot to oust the president’s national security adviser, again with the help of the media. Comey also began writing secret memoranda of conversations he had with now-President Trump. And after Trump fired Comey, the latter leaked those memoranda to the media through a law professor friend, triggering the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

 

Mueller continued Crossfire Hurricane, retaining many of the original FBI agents. The country would later learn that many of those investigating the Trump campaign held rabid anti-Trump sentiments, when text messages exchanged by members of the Crossfire Hurricane team were made public. Other text messages went missing when several agents wiped their cell phones.

 

The public learned of even more malfeasance by the Crossfire Hurricane team when the DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General released a 400-plus-page report concluding that the DOJ included 17 significant inaccuracies and omissions in the FISA application and renewals related to Carter Page.

 

These problems and others led then-AG William Barr to appoint U.S. Attorney John Durham to lead an investigation into Crossfire Hurricane, later naming him a special prosecutor.

 

As part of his investigation, Durham revealed additional misconduct in Crossfire Hurricane when he obtained a guilty plea from a former FBI attorney for altering an email related to the FISA case against Page.

 

Durham’s team also obtained a statement from another FBI agent involved in the investigation named William Barnett. Barnett told DOJ investigators that there was never any basis for the bizarre “collusion” theory and that Mueller’s office pushed prosecutions with a “get Trump” mentality. But even then, Mueller found no evidence of Trump colluding with Russia.

 

There are thousands more details already known and many more players involved — and that’s before whatever else Durham may reveal. But just these basics provide all the information you need to understand SpyGate — and to see why it far surpasses the Watergate scandal.

Kamala Harris’ Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, is leaving the VP’s office for a position at the Pentagon.

 

Sabrina Singh is the 9th high profile staffer to leave Harris’ office.

 

 

Another top aide to Vice President Kamala Harris is departing her office. Sabrina Singh, Harris’ current deputy press secretary, is moving to the Defense Department for a new role, according to an internal email obtained by CBS News that details staff changes within the vice president’s office.

 

Jamal Simmons, the communications director for the vice president, wrote in the memo of the “sad news” of Singh’s departure. “We will miss her institutional knowledge, strategic counsel and rapid-fire e-mail fingers,” Simmons said.

 

Singh’s announcement marks the departure of one of Harris’ longest serving aides in an office with many newcomers to the vice president’s orbit. Harris first hired Singh in March 2020 to run communications for her political operations. Singh became a key adviser to Harris during the silent campaign by prominent Democrats to join Joe Biden’s ticket. She also worked for Harris during the general election and the transition. Singh has served as deputy press secretary since the beginning of the administration.

Solve for X: Deciphering Calibration Marks Made for Classified Spy Missions

 

Viewed from the sky or seen up close on the ground, giant X shapes andtriple bar patternsscattered across the United States look equally perplexing. The former (above) are like huge treasure-map markers, but built at the scale of the map and not the ground represented. The latter (below) are even stranger, like geometrical land art, a secret code or perhaps a welcome sign for extraterrestrial visitors.

 

Despite variations in their details, all of these massive markers were designed to serve similar functions as aerial photo calibration targets — terrestrial test patterns that are essentially Snellen charts for aircraft and satellites. Most of them were built by and for the military and some date back to the early days ofspace-based surveillance initiatives.

 

Per the Center for Land Use Interpretation, “the targets function like an eye chart at the optometrist.” When it comes to the 5:1 aspect ratio tri-bar patterns, “the smallest group of bars that can be resolved marks the limit of the resolution for the optical instrument that is being used.” Still, even the bigger tri-bars are generally fairly small compared to the gigantic grid of X’s arrayed across a remote section of the Southwest.

 

In the 1960s, over 100 X-shaped concrete targets were poured in a grid spanning hundreds of square miles in Arizona. From above, they look almost artificially perfect, each one sixty feet across and precisely constructed. For years, their exact function was a mystery to most (by design) — later, their specific purpose was declassified.

 

Launched in the late 1950s by Central Intelligence Agency Directorate of Science & Technology (with assistance from the U.S. Air Force), the Corona program involved tasking satellites to take photographs of foreign states including the USSR and People’s Republic of China…

 

Initial photos were indeed blurry, but the grid of shapes in the clear, dry Arizona desert helped the government calibrate their cameras. With adjustments made, Corona satellite program was continued and captured huge numbers of intelligible photos. Over the next decade or so, these satellites shot over 800,000 images (2.1 million feet of film).

 

Eventually, the X’s were rendered obsolete in part due to evolving technology. Groundwater removal also caused slight shifts in the landscape that were sufficient to skew the initially precise relative positions of points on the grid. Many of these targets have since been destroyed but some remain scattered across the desert…

 

Thetri-bar arraysserve a similar function to the X’s but for a broader range of aircraft. They are “widely used to determine the resolving power of microscopes, telescopes, cameras, and scanners,” per the CLUI. “For aerial photography, they provide a platform to test, calibrate, and focus aerial cameras traveling at different speeds and altitudes.”

 

These arrangements of parallel and perpendicular bars can be found in various remote places, including California’s Mojave Desert. Most are located inside military complexes, like an Air Force base in Florida and a Navy drone airport in Maryland. Some stand alone while others are painted right onto landing strips, letting pavement serve a dual purpose. The largest array spans 20 miles alongside Edwards AFB.

 

But like the giant concrete arrows used to direct planes in the pre-radar age,many of these calibration targets have since been abandoned— they have proved obsolete in the age of digital photography.
