Mariupol on the brink of falling as Ukrainian fighters defy Russian surrender demands

A Russian deadline for Ukrainian troops to surrender in the devastated port city of Mariupol came and went Sunday in a pitched battle whose outcome could change the course of the war.

A few thousand Ukrainian fighters bunkered in the Azovstal steelworks plant were offered a chance to lay down their arms, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. But the Ukrainian side appears to have rejected the offer, and Russia’s military warned that troops who refused “will be destroyed.”

In an address to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that the strategic coastal city was on the verge of being lost, saying Ukraine’s troops were outnumbered 6 to 1 and the situation there “remains as severe as possible.”

“Russia is deliberately trying to destroy everyone who is there,” said Zelenskyy, who also warned that Ukraine may walk away from peace talks with Russia if troops continue to commit atrocities in the city.

Mariupol, which has endured almost two months of fighting, has become one of the starkest examples of Moscow’s brutal tactics in the invasion of its smaller neighbor. Officials say more than 20,000 people have been killed there. An estimated 100,000 civilians remain in siege conditions, with no food, water or heating, local officials and aid groups say.

Speaking to CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said remaining Ukrainian soldiers and a large group of civilians “are basically encircled by the Russian forces.” The badly damaged city “doesn’t exist anymore,” he said. “They decided to raze the city to the ground at any cost.”

Still, Mariupol has become a symbol of defiance for Ukrainians for refusing to bow even as many of its buildings lie in ruins and its people are buried in mass graves.

A takeover of the city, which lies on the Sea of Azov, would be a significant victory for Russia in a war marked by its forces’ missteps. A win there would not only provide a land bridge from the east to Russian-annexed Crimea, but would also free up Russian forces to move north and link up with the other thrust of the Russian offensive coming from the city of Izyum, some 144 miles north, and complete their encirclement of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, the stated objective of the second phase of Russia’s invasion.

The escalating battle for Mariupol comes as Russian troops press their offensive on cities and towns in the east. On Sunday, the United Kingdom’s Defense Ministry said Russia was deploying additional combat and support equipment from Belarus to locations close to Kharkiv and Severodonetsk.

“Russian artillery continues to strike Ukrainian positions throughout the east of the country” as part of what the defense ministry said was a shift “in its operational focus.”

Officials said Russian shelling on central Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine, had killed five people and wounded dozens more. They said two people were killed in an attack on a residential building in the town of Zolote, in the eastern Luhansk region.

Ukrainian officials said they had failed to reach a cease-fire agreement with Russia to create an evacuation corridor that would allow civilians to escape fighting in the eastern and southern parts of the country.

At the same time, Russia continued striking other parts of the country in what it has described as retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory. Sunday morning brought fresh reports of explosions in Kyiv , and the western city of Lviv.

The capital, which was heavily bombarded at the outset of the war, had enjoyed a period of relative calm after Russian forces broke off an offensive in Ukraine’s north at the beginning of this month. Lviv, which has become a western outpost for aid organizations and displaced families fleeing toward Poland, had seen only sporadic attacks.

The renewed assaults came after Russia was humiliated by the sinking of its most important warship in the Black Sea. Ukraine says its forces struck the ship — an assertion backed by U.S. officials — although Russia maintains the ship was not attacked and sunk while being towed to port after suffering a fire.

Battle for Donbass has started — Ukraine

Kiev says the “second phase of the war” has begun

The second phase of the Russian offensive has started, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his advisers claimed on Monday. The government in Kiev said there were reports of heavy fighting on the Donetsk, Lugansk, and Kharkov fronts, and that Ukrainian troops were holding the line.

“We can now confirm that Russian troops have begun the battle for the Donbass, which they have been preparing for a long time,” Zelensky said in a video posted on Telegram on Monday evening.

“A large part of the Russian army is now dedicated to this offensive,” he added.

His chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, said earlier that the “second phase of the war” had started in the east, but urged Ukrainians to “believe in our army, it is very strong.”

Russian forces are attacking “along almost the entire front line,” said Alexey Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council. “Fortunately, our military is holding on.”

The Russian Defense Ministry did not comment on any ground operations on Monday. There were reports from frontline correspondents about heavy fighting south of Izyum, north of Severodonetsk, and west of Donetsk city. There were also reports of artillery and missile strikes in Kharkov, Nikolaev, and north-western Donetsk regions.

Russia attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered protocols were designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state.

The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

WHILE TRYING TO map the extent and impact of place-based Facebook groups where QAnon and allied disinformation spread, I went looking for Facebook groups with names including 10, 11, or 12. This was part of my work with the Pitt Disinformation Lab, and I was thinking of the 10th, 11th, or 12th wards of the city of Pittsburgh. What appeared instead was a group named “Buscando novi@ de 9,10,11,12,13 años.” Looking for a 9-year-old girlfriend? What?

The page’s aesthetic was cartoon cute: oversized eyes with long lashes, hearts, and pastels. The posts that made explicit references to photographed genitalia were gamified and spangled with emoticons: “See your age in this list? Type it into the replies and I’ll show ‘it’ to you.”

Most often posts were just doorways to connection, the real danger offstage. “Looking for a perverted girlfriend of 11,” read one post, with purple background and heart emojis. Replies asked for friend requests to continue via Messenger, or offered entry to private groups or WhatsApp chats—away from the eyes of even a digital passerby.

This was not some outlaw 8Chan message board. It was cheerfully findable on Facebook. And, I began discovering in alarm, it was not the only one. Indeed, as late as January 2022—three months into my efforts to get action taken against them—if I searched 11, 12, 13 on the platform, 23 of the first 30 results were groups targeting children of those ages, with group names that included the words boyfriend/girlfriend, novio/a, or niños/niñas, sometimes along with ‘pervertidos,’ ‘hot,’ etc. They totaled over 81,000 members.

US billionaires own trillions in largely untaxed wealth – report

American billionaires’ wealth soared almost two-thirds during pandemic, and they’re still not paying taxes on it

The 735 billionaires who call the US home have watched their wealth surge 62% over the last two years, reaching the shocking figure of$4.7 trillion, according to a report by Oxfam America released on Monday.

While the billionaires’ wealth gains show no sign of slowing down, ordinary workers’ earnings have gone up just 10% – meager growth that has been all but cancelled out by hefty increases in the cost of housing, gas, food, and other commodities, with no end in sight to soaring inflation. Many have struggled to rebuild economically after the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.

A recent ProPublica study found that while the median American family pays a federal income tax rate of 14%, the 25 richest only paid an effective rate of 3.4% from 2014 to 2018. While there are plenty of different reasons the rich may end up paying less, one major cause is that they don’t report a major chunk of their income – something even the Internal Revenue Service was finally forced to admit last year.

“We estimate that 36% of federal income taxes unpaid are owed by the top 1% and that collecting all unpaid federal income tax from this group would increase federal revenues by about $175 billion annually,” the researchers admitted.

Rather than follow up on that discovery, the IRS continues to audit low-income families – those earning $25,000 or less – at a rate five times higher than any other class of taxpayer, according to an analysis conducted last month by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. The IRS has admitted “such low audit rates are not optimal,” but has thus far declined to address the problem.

While several US politicians have proposed plans to counter the inexorable ‘trickle-up’ draining working class Americans dry, none have made it to a vote. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) has called for taxing the unrealized capital gains of billionaires, a system that would bring in $56 billion per year in revenues, enough to paid sick leave, family medical leave, and affordable childcare, according to Oxfam’s calculations. California state lawmaker Alex Lee (D-San Jose) has proposed a 1.5% wealth tax on households worth more than $1 billion. Previous attempts to pass such a law in California, home to some of the richest lawmakers in the country, have failed.

At the same time, Oxfam has observed that a global minimum tax on multinational corporations would raise another $63 billion, which the organization argues could fund critical public health needs, including expanding Medicare and Medicaid. While even the Biden administration has backed that idea, it would require the approval of all countries in which the multinationals operate – a difficult consensus to reach on even the least controversial of matters.

A Piece of the True Cross May Have Sunk with Russia’s Warship

Russia’s ‘Go fuck yourself’ warship may have taken a priceless Christian relic to the bottom of the Black Sea.

The Russian cruiser class warship Moskva now lies at the bottom of the Black Sea. It’s possible that the ship was carrying a piece of the True Cross, a priceless relic some Christians believe is a sliver of wood taken from the cross used to crucify Jesus Christ.

The Moskva was part of Russia’s Black Sea fleet and one of the largest ships in its entire navy. According to Ukraine, it struck the ship with a Neptune anti-ship cruise missile which, eventually, caused it to sink. Russia has admitted the ship sank but not that Ukraine struck it with a missile.

However it got there, the Moskva is now sinking to the bottom of the sea and it’s possibly taking a piece of the True Cross with it. In 2020, the Russian news agency TASS reported that the Russian Orthodox Church had acquired a piece of the cross and would place it on the Moskva.

"This relic used to belong to a Catholic church but was acquired by anonymous patrons of arts, and it was their will to send the relic to the [Black Sea] fleet,” Sergiy Khalyuta, of the Russian Orthdox Church, told Tass at the time. “The Moskva cruiser has an onboard chapel, where services take place.”

The use of relics such as this alleged piece of the True Cross dates back to the Middle Ages when Christian churches would use them to draw parishioners and pilgrims to specific religious sites. True Cross pieces are typically presented as pieces of wood embedded in ornate crosses or religious artwork. The Russian Orthodox Church has a close relationship with the military. Clergy frequently interact with soldiers and bless weapons as small as a rifle and as big as a nuclear weapon.

It’s impossible to know if the piece of the True Cross made it off the Moskva. It did, however, take a long time to sink, and the crew evacuated ahead of its departure to the bottom of the sea. It’s quite possible someone recognized the value of the relic and got it off the sinking ship.

Former fishing village in China has more billionaires than New York

Shenzhen recently kicked The Big Apple down a notch

China now hosts three cities with the greatest number of billionaires in the world, data from Global Rich List, an annual ranking prepared by the Shanghai-based research firm Hurun Report, shows.

The greatest number of billionaires – 144 – live in Beijing, followed by Shanghai with 121. New York used to occupy the third spot with 110, but was recently outdone by Shenzhen, a former fishing village turned China’s Silicon Valley, with 113 of the globe’s most wealthy. The city has been basking in a growing concentration of wealth, adding eight billionaires to its list since last year.

According to Heng Chen, an associate professor of economics at the University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen’s rise stemmed from its efforts to make the city welcoming to businesses, for instance, by offering tax breaks to high-tech companies.

“The structure of the population is still very young compared to other super cities or first-tier cities in China, so that’s one of the reasons why it’s a very attractive place,” he said, adding that Shenzhen authorities “commit a lot of financial resources to attract top talents from the rest of the world.”

Shenzhen started growing rapidly back in 1980, after it was granted the rights of China’s first special economic zone, which allowed the city to attract foreign investment. As a result, its GDP grew from less than $28 million to roughly $475 billion in the last 4 decades.

The city hosts a number of China’s major tech firms, including Huawei and Tencent, which analysts say, draws other big names. In 2021, some 2,500 new high-tech companies were set up in Shenzhen, making their total around 17,000, according to local government data.

Hurun Report says there were 3,381 billionaires in the world as of January 14, 153 more than the previous year, with 1,133 of them living in China. Zhong Shanshan, the founder of beverage company Nongfu Spring, is China’s richest person with a net worth of $72 billion. ByteDance (TikTok owner) founder Zhang Yiming, is second with $54 billion, and Zeng Yuqun, head of electric-vehicle battery maker CATL is third with $53 billion.

However, there are no Chinese billionaires in the global top 10 list, and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk with a net worth of more than $200 billion remains the world’s richest person.

Palestinian terrorists have been fanning the flames of religious violence in recent weeks, as Israelis have been preparing for the Passover holiday, observed this week. On Thursday evening, April 8, a Palestinian terrorist attacked Tel Aviv’s busy Dizengoff Square where mainly secular Israeli young people were crowded at bars and cafes, tragically murdering three Jews in their 20s.

Shortly after the deadly massacre, Hamas explained their motive and declared, “The continuing terrorism of the occupation and its crimes, attempts to Judaize Jerusalem and to perform sacrifices in the Al-Aqsa Mosque to build its so-called ‘Temple’ during what they call ‘Passover’ — against it stands blood and bullets.”

Through their statement, Hamas exposed their greatest fear: that Israel will start to build the Temple.

For thousands of years, Jews have been praying for a return to the Land of Israel. Over the last century, we have miraculously been restored to our homeland from the four corners of the earth, but are still awaiting the proper time to build the Temple.

Judaism is incomplete without the Temple, and Passover is a prime example, as Deuteronomy makes clear:

Pentagon to train Ukrainian troops on US guns

Ukrainian instructors will travel to third country to get training on US weapons such as howitzers and radars

The Pentagon intends to provide training to Ukrainian soldiers so they use the howitzers and radars contained in the latest batch of weapons and equipment President Joe Biden ordered sent to Kiev, the US military said on Monday. The training will reportedly take place in another country.

Last week, the US announced it would send $800 million worth of weapons to Kiev. In addition to anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, this batch includes armored vehicles, artillery pieces, and tactical radars, for which the Ukrainians would need training.

The Pentagon is planning to teach Ukrainian trainers how to use the new weapons sometime in the coming days in an unspecified third country, an anonymous US defense official told reporters on Monday. This way, the Ukrainians would train their colleagues on how to use the US weapons, while Washington would avoid having “boots on the ground” in Ukraine itself.

Earlier, the Pentagon revealed that some of the Ukrainian troops in the US were trained in using the Switchblade kamikaze drones, 300 of which were included in the new shipment of weapons.

Among the weapons announced by the Biden administration last week were 500 more Javelin anti-tank missiles, 500 more Stinger anti-air missiles, 10 counter-artillery radars, two air surveillance radars, 200 of the M113 armored personnel carriers, 100 Humvee armored cars, and 18 towed 155mm howitzers, along with some 40,000 rounds of ammunition.

It was not specified which howitzers would be sent, though the presence of the retired M113s suggests they would be the M198 models decommissioned in the last decade, rather than the current M777 in service with the US military.

So far, four flights of weapons from the new package have been dispatched to Ukraine, the anonymous US official told the media.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its tactical aircraft had struck 22 Ukrainian artillery positions on Monday alone, and that Kiev has lost over 1,000 field artillery pieces and 250 rocket artillery launchers since February 24.

Russia has also targeted NATO weapons shipments to Ukraine. On Monday morning, a missile strike against a logistics center in Lvov destroyed “large consignments of foreign weapons that arrived in Ukraine over the past six days from the US and European countries,” said military spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov. CF Industries ships to customers via Union Pacific rail lines primarily from its Donaldsonville Complex in Louisiana and its Port Neal Complex in Iowa. The rail lines serve key agricultural areas such as Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas and California.

CF Industries believes it will still be able to fulfill delivery of product already contracted for rail shipment to Union Pacific destinations, albeit with likely delays.
