US Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday unveiled a new โ€œOffice of Environmental Justiceโ€ to advance Joe Bidenโ€™s climate agenda.

 

โ€œThe new office will be headed by Cynthia Ferguson, an attorney working in the DOJโ€™s Environmental Enforcement Section of its Environment and Natural Resources Division.โ€ โ€“ CNN reported.

 

Garland said the Office of Environmental Justice โ€œwill serve as the central hub for our efforts to advance our comprehensive environmental justice enforcement strategy,โ€ with the office working alongside a number of other intradepartmental agencies, including the Civil Rights Division and United States Attorneysโ€™ offices, to โ€œprioritize meaningful and constructive engagement with the communities most affected by environmental crime and injustice.โ€

Iowa will recognize abortion rights if SCOTUS reverses Roe v. Wade

 

The Iowa Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the case.

 

At this point, Iowans wonโ€™t see an immediate impact if Roe v Wade is overturned, an Iowa attorney general spokesman says.

 

The Iowa Supreme Court has recognized a right to abortion in the stateโ€™s constitution, Office of the Attorney General Chief of Staff Lynn Hicks told The Center Square in an emailed statement Wednesday.

 

Iowa legislators and Gov. Kim Reynolds asked the court to overturn that ruling in a case regarding the 24-hour waiting period law passed in 2020, Hicks said.

 

In August 2021, 60 legislators asked the Iowa Supreme Court in an amicus brief filed by Alliance Defending Freedom and The FAMiLY Leader to reverse its 2018 decision on Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. v Reynolds. In that case, the court recognized a right to abortion in the Iowa Constitution in its 2018 opinion in Reynolds v Planned Parenthood. It concluded the law violates the due process and equal protection clauses of the Iowa Constitution because its restrictions on women are not narrowly tailored to serve a compelling interest of the State, Justice Mark Cady said in the majorityโ€™s ruling.

 

Since the 2018 decision, Gov. Kim Reynolds has appointed justices Dana Oxley, Matthew McDermott, Christopher McDonald, and Susan Christensen, who replaced the late Cady as chief justice.

 

โ€œIf that 2018 state ruling still stands when Roe is overturned, Iowans will watch state after state around us protect life, while we cannot,โ€ The FAMiLY Leader said in a statement Tuesday. โ€œRather, Iowa would likely become an abortion destination state, where thousands of women travel to seek abortions.โ€

 

The Iowa Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the case.

 

The institute supports a Protect Life Amendment that Iowa legislators passed in May 2021 to amend the Iowa Constitution to declare the Constitution โ€œdoes not recognize, grant, or secure a right to abortion or require the public funding of abortion.โ€ The proposed amendment needs to be passed again in the fall legislative session before voters see it as an electoral ballot question.

 

Under a bill that is lingering in the House, SF2381, Iowa would spend $1 million expanding options statewide for maternal support programs through nonprofit organizations that promote helping pregnant women choose adoption or parenting. The Senate passed it April 5 in a 32-16 vote.

VICE posts 'do it yourself' abortion guide including 'abortion pills' made with ingredients used to treat horses

 

After many took to Twitter to condemn the publication for engaging in potentially dangerous home abortions, VICE instead chose to double down on the medically unsound advice.

 

Left-wing news outlet, VICE posted a โ€œdo it yourselfโ€ abortion guide on Tuesday, with details on creating DIY โ€œabortion pillsโ€ made with ingredients used to treat horses with stomach ulcers.

 

VICEโ€™s โ€œMotherboardโ€ account wrote on Twitter, โ€œMisoprostol is relatively easy to acquire from veterinary sources, since in addition to medically inducing abortions, it's also used to treat ulcers in horses,โ€ with a link to the article.

 

The article comes following the leaked documents that the Supreme Court may overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision of the Supreme Court in 1973 that protects a womanโ€™s choice to have an abortion without government restriction.

 

The article discusses the drug misoprostol, an NSAID medication that can be used to induce abortions.

 

VICE wrote in the article, โ€œThis is reminiscent of ivermectin, which is used to control parasites in horses but also became a favoredโ€”but ineffectiveโ€”COVID treatment among conspiracy theorists. Ivermectinโ€™s use in horses made it easier for humans to get without a prescription,โ€ seemingly unaware of the comparisons to Ivermectin, which was vilified on social media after questions about its efficacy were raised by some medical doctors.

 

The mainstream media blasted popular podcast host Joe Rogan for taking ivermectin after being diagnosed with COVID-19, as prescribed by his doctor.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update: FDA Limits Use of Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine to Certain Individuals

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has limited the authorized use of the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine to individuals 18 years of age and older for whom other authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccines are not accessible or clinically appropriate, and to individuals 18 years of age and older who elect to receive the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine because they would otherwise not receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

 

Key Points:

 

After conducting an updated analysis, evaluation and investigation of reported cases, the FDA has determined that the risk of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), a syndrome of rare and potentially life-threatening blood clots in combination with low levels of blood platelets with onset of symptoms approximately one to two weeks following administration of the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine, warrants limiting the authorized use of the vaccine.

 

The FDA has determined that the known and potential benefits of the vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 outweigh the known and potential risks for individuals 18 years of age and older for whom other authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccines are not accessible or clinically appropriate, and for individuals 18 years of age and older who elect to receive the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine because they would otherwise not receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

According to data being released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, close to 60% of adults and 75% of children have been infected by COVID-19. On top of that data, in December, it was reported that 34% of Americans have antibodies formed against the virus. With COVID-19 still present all over the globe, pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and even the Biden administration have continued to push for more COVID-19 assistance. To date, the federal government has spent over $3 trillion fighting the virus. FDA restricts J&Jโ€™s COVID-19 vaccine due to blood clot risk

 

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has limited the authorized use of the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine to individuals 18 years of age and older for whom other authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccines are not accessible or clinically appropriate, and to individuals 18 years of age and older who elect to receive the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine because they would otherwise not receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

 

After conducting an updated analysis, evaluation and investigation of reported cases, the FDA has determined that the risk of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), a syndrome of rare and potentially life-threatening blood clots in combination with low levels of blood platelets with onset of symptoms approximately one to two weeks following administration of the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine, warrants limiting the authorized use of the vaccine.

 

The FDA has determined that the known and potential benefits of the vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 outweigh the known and potential risks for individuals 18 years of age and older for whom other authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccines are not accessible or clinically appropriate, and for individuals 18 years of age and older who elect to receive the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine because they would otherwise not receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

 

โ€œWe recognize that the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine still has a role in the current pandemic response in the United States and across the global community. Our action reflects our updated analysis of the risk of TTS following administration of this vaccine and limits the use of the vaccine to certain individuals,โ€ said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDAโ€™s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. โ€œTodayโ€™s action demonstrates the robustness of our safety surveillance systems and our commitment to ensuring that science and data guide our decisions. Intelligence shared by the U.S. helped Ukraine sink the Russian cruiser Moskva, U.S. officials told NBC News, confirming an American role in perhaps the most embarrassing blow to Vladimir Putinโ€™s troubled invasion of Ukraine.

 

A guided missile cruiser carrying a crew of 510, the Moskva was the flagship of Russiaโ€™s Black Sea Fleet. It sank on April 14 after being struck by two Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missiles, U.S. officials said. Moscow said the vessel sank after a fire. The Moskva was the largest Russian warship sunk in combat since World War II. American officials said there were significant Russian casualties, but they donโ€™t know how many.

 

The attack happened after Ukrainian forces asked the Americans about a ship sailing in the Black Sea south of Odesa, U.S. officials told NBC News. The U.S. identified it as the Moskva, officials said, and helped confirm its location, after which the Ukrainians targeted the ship.

 

The U.S. did not know in advance that Ukraine was going to target the Moskva, officials said, and was not involved in the decision to strike. Maritime intelligence is shared with Ukraine to help it defend against attack from Russian ships, officials added.

 

The U.S. role in the sinking has not been previously reported. But NBC News detailed last month how American intelligence shared with Ukraine had been instrumental in Ukraineโ€™s successes to date, including in helping Ukraine target Russian forces and avoid Russian attacks.

 

American officials have expressed concerns that reporting about U.S. intelligence sharing with Ukraine could anger Putin and provoke an unpredictable response.

 

The White House did not immediately provide a comment to NBC News.

Russia attacked the neighboring state following Ukraineโ€™s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, signed in 2014, and Moscowโ€™s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and French-brokered Minsk Protocol was designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state.

Russian assets that have been frozen in the EU as part of sanctions against Moscow over the conflict with Kiev should be seized and allocated for the reconstruction of Ukraine, European Council President Charles Michel said on Thursday.

 

โ€œIโ€™m absolutely convinced that this is extremely important not only to freeze assets, but also to make it possible to confiscate them, to make them available for rebuilding the country. Iโ€™m personally convinced,โ€ Michel insisted in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

 

He revealed that he had already told the Councilโ€™s legal service to come up with โ€œsome possible ideas in order to find a legal solution in line with the principles of the rule of law, that would facilitate and make possible the confiscation of the assets of the people who are sanctioned by the EU or by other countries in the world.โ€

 

Acting in such a manner should be โ€œa question of fairness, a question of justiceโ€ for Brussels, he added.

 

However, Michel acknowledged that implementing his plan on a โ€œlegal level is not so simple.โ€

 

โ€œThere are 27 legal systems across the EU and, in many EU member states, this needs a decision taken by a court in order to make it possible. It takes time, itโ€™s a difficult and long process,โ€ he explained.

 

The European Council presidentโ€™s ideas echoed those previously voiced by Washington. Former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens will get to look at his ex-wifeโ€™s telephone records from the days before she filed explosive allegations of child and spousal abuse against the Republican Senate candidate.

 

In an order dated April 28, Associate Circuit Judge Leslie Schneider overruled Sheena Greitensโ€™ motion to quash subpoenas for her phone logs and text messages. In the same order, Schneider denied Eric Greitensโ€™ request for phone records for his former campaign manager, Austin Chambers, and Sheena Greitensโ€™ sister, Catherine Linkul.

 

The order was posted Thursday on Casenet, the stateโ€™s online court record system, and did not include any information about Schneiderโ€™s reasoning for the decision. Schneider ruled two days after hearing oral arguments from Gary Stamper, Eric Greitensโ€™ attorney; Helen Wade, Sheena Greitensโ€™ attorney; Kurt Schaefer, attorney for Chambers; and David Niemeier, attorney for Linkul.

 

Eric Greitens is seeking phone records in an effort to prove Sheena Greitens conspired with his political enemies, including former presidential adviser Karl Rove and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to write the affidavit that contains the abuse allegations and to make sure they were well-publicized.

 

In sworn statements to the court, Sheena Greitens has said she did not discuss the affidavit with anyone except Wade prior to the date it was filed.

 

Stamper argued to Schneider that the phone records were the fastest way to determine whether Sheena Greitens worked with political opponents to deliver the March 21 affidavit to the Associated Press minutes after it was filed.

 

โ€œI am interested in knowing who was talking to who at or near the time of the leak in an effort to confirm a sad suspicion,โ€ Stamper said.

 

Wade argued that the phone records have nothing to do with the underlying issue.

 

โ€œThe conspiracy theory that Mr. Greitens has concocted is just that โ€“ itโ€™s not real,โ€ Wade said.

 

Sheena Greitens and Eric Greitens were divorced in 2020, two years after he resigned as governor as part of a deal to dismiss criminal charges. She is trying to move jurisdiction of their child custody arrangements to Texas, where she is on the faculty of the University of Texas, from Boone County, where she lived while working on the faculty of the University of Missouri.

 

Eric Greitens is attempting a political comeback in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.

 

He has consistently led or been in a statistical tie with other major candidates in the 21-person contest. No public poll has been conducted since the week after Sheena Greitensโ€™ affidavit became public on March 21.

 

The subpoenas, which sought information directly from Verizon and AT&T, sought the call logs and text messages for Sheena Greitens, Chambers, Linkul, Rove and one other unidentified person for the period Feb. 1 through March 22. The request for Roveโ€™s records was dropped before Schneider conducted the April 26 hearing on motions to quash the subpoenas.

 

Dylan Johnson, campaign manager for Eric Greitens, issued a statement Thursday again accusing Sheena Greitens of lying in her affidavit and stating that medical and dental records for their two sons show no abuse had occurred.

 

โ€œWe expect that the facts will show, sadly, that she coordinated with Mitch McConnellโ€™s lieutenants and Karl Rove to peddle these false allegations,โ€ Johnson said in the statement emailed to The Independent. โ€œUltimately, we look forward to gaining access to their records as well.โ€

 

A statement issued by Stamper repeated arguments he has made in filings, that Sheena Greitens had a duty to disclose the allegations in her March 21 affidavit during the original divorce case.

โ€œIt is my most fervent wish that I not be replaced until a new president is installed.โ€ These were the last words of the late Associate Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

 

Despite her wish, Republican Senators are breaking all the rules to rush through confirmation of Trumpโ€™s Supreme Court nomination of Amy Coney Barrettโ€”the polar opposite of the womenโ€™s rights icon RBG.

 

On Sunday, Oct. 25, activists walked silently in black and red robes in over 100 cities and towns across the nation to protest the confirmation of Barrett to the Supreme Court.

 

Those in black robes with white laced collars dressed as Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Those in red robes with white bonnets were dressed as handmaids from Margaret Atwoodโ€™s dystopian novel and series โ€œThe Handmaidโ€™s Tale.โ€

 

They protested as handmaidens to object to the actions of Trump and Senate Republicans to rollback womenโ€™s rights through their anti-abortion, anti-contraception, anti-woman policies and court appointments.

 

โ€œYou might have someone walk up whoโ€™s been a victim of sexual assault. You might have someone whoโ€™s had an abortion. You might have someone walk up whoโ€™s simply been fighting for equal pay,โ€ said Jessie Steigerwald, founding member of the Boston Red Cloaks and lead organizer of the protest in that city. โ€œJust seeing the outfit โ€ฆ suddenly they feel understood. They feel seen. They feel heard.โ€

 

From Boston to Miami, Los Angeles to Minneapolis, protesters organized silent, solemn and powerful processions, heads bowed, along city streets and in front of state capitols.

 

In Boston, the statute of liberty joined the procession, and some suffragists. Signs read, โ€œRuth Sent Us,โ€ โ€œA Womanโ€™s Place is in the Resistance,โ€ โ€œMore Than A Womb,โ€ โ€œUnder His Eye America Will Fall,โ€ โ€œBlessed Be the Fight.โ€ Others said, โ€œMake Atwood and Orwell Fiction Again,โ€ and โ€œDonโ€™t Confirm Before the Next Term.โ€

 

Why Protest?

 

The Red Cloak National Protest had a three-fold purpose:

 

To publicly protest the nomination, confirmation, and appointment of any Supreme Court Justice by the 45th president of the United States.

To affirm equal rights for women, especially body autonomy.

To honor the memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

RuthSent.us, however, redacted information related to its ownersโ€™ purchase. Another online domain tool, โ€œWHOIS,โ€ revealed the name Sam Spiegel as its registrant along with a P.O. box.

 

According to 2018 filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Spiegel is named as treasurer of the political action committee, Unseat. Spiegelโ€™s name is used for the Unseat PACโ€™s Twitter page, amplifying videos from MeidasTouch.com going after conservative justices for their potential reversal of the decision in Roe v. Wade. Unseatโ€™s pinned post is an attack on Justice Kavanaugh claiming without evidence that his seat on the high bench was purchased. The group hasnโ€™t filed with the FEC for years.

 

The FEC statement for the Unseat PAC lists Spiegel with the same P. O. box that the domain tool yielded for RuthSent.us. The statement also revealed another name, Vara Ramakrishnan, whose apparent Facebook page includes references to #StrikeForChoice and links to RefuseFascism.org. The โ€œRuth Sent Usโ€ website links to Strike For Choice, which shows โ€œconnections to groups including Black Lives Matter, Code Pink, Womenโ€™s March SF, Kavanaugh Off Our Court, and Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights,โ€ as Judicial Networkโ€™s Carrie Severino noted.

 

Ramakrishnanโ€™s name is also associated with another group called โ€œVigil for Democracy,โ€ an LLC registered in Arizona in October, according to Bizapedia, an online company search engine. Vigil for Democracy is marked as a sponsor of the map posted on RuthSent.us that outlines where justices might live.

 

Another name associated with Vigil for Democracy is Snowden Bishop, a left-wing radio host. Bishopโ€™s LinkedIn page identifies her as a โ€œprincipalโ€ of Vigil for Democracy and another group called โ€œJust Resisting.โ€ Just Resistingโ€™s Twitter page is run by the name โ€œJustin Russell,โ€ who is listed alongside Bishop as an administrator of Vigil for Democracyโ€™s fundraising page on Open Collective.

 

However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has explicitly threatened both Kavanaugh and Justice Neil Gorsuch. At a protest in 2020 on the steps of the Supreme Court, which this week is under siege by left-wing activists and has anti-riot fencing protecting it, Schumer said, โ€œI want to tell you Gorsuch, I want to tell you Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You wonโ€™t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.โ€

 

The threat against these justices if they didnโ€™t rule the way Schumer preferred received pushback from other Democrats and Chief Justice John Roberts.

Yesterdayโ€™s hearing only seems to confirm that Durham will get these records - to an extent (more on that โ€œextentโ€ below). As we updated on Twitter, the Court granted Durhamโ€™s motion to compel production of documents for in camera review (meaning review by the judge). The purpose of this step is so the judge can determine whether the attorney-client privilege and/or the work product protections apply to these documents and communications.

The transcript also sheds light on the content of the e-mails - or at a minimum, the subject matter of the e-mails. All 38 e-mails relate to the Alfa Bank allegations. 30 of those are โ€œinternal Fusion emailsโ€ and 8 are correspondence involving Rodney Joffe.

 

The judge also pressed the Hillary for America attorney about the broader Fusion GPS role in โ€œmedia relationsโ€:

Another issue the court faced yesterday was the fact that there are more e-mails the Special Counsel might want to access. While the Sussmann case involves a dispute over 38 e-mails, Fusion has asserted privilege over some โ€œ1,500 documentsโ€ at the direction of โ€œthe privilege-holderโ€™s counselโ€ (either Hillary for America or Rodney Joffe, or both). If the court grants access, that could open up access to the other e-mails. The court asked whether Durhamโ€™s team would come back for the other 1,500 e-mails. They responded in the negative - with a curious โ€œnot for this trialโ€ - and stated the courtโ€™s decision would be โ€œimportant for other investigations.โ€

 

Near the end of the hearing, the judge granted Durhamโ€™s request for an in camera review of the 38 emails. In doing so, he observed โ€œthere is a distinction between hiring a public relations firm to provide fact-checking or consulting on litigation risk and the affirmative creation and dissemination of research about an opposing candidate or business, for that matter.โ€

Vanโ€˜s new track โ€˜Dangerousโ€™ appears to reference the musicianโ€™s ongoing feud with Robin Swann, the Northern Ireland Minister Of Health.

 

Last November, Swann filed a defamation lawsuit against Morrison over comments he had made regarding COVID-19 earlier in 2021.

 

During a pre-show dinner event in Belfast in June, Morrison branded Swann โ€œvery dangerousโ€ in a response to Swann criticising him for his anti-lockdown stance in a 2020 op-ed, in which he said Morrisonโ€™s words โ€œwill give great comfort to the conspiracy theoristsโ€.

 

On Friday (April 29) Morrison released โ€˜Dangerousโ€™, the third single from his upcoming 43rd studio album โ€˜Whatโ€™s It Gonna Take?โ€™, which is due to arrive on May 20 via Exile Productions/Virgin.

 

The almost-eight-minute number includes the lines: โ€œSomebody said I was dangerous/ I said something bad, it must have been good.โ€ Later, Morrison tells this listener that he โ€œwas just looking for the evidenceโ€ and asks for โ€œproofโ€œ.

 

The title of the single and the repeated use of โ€œdangerousโ€ could be interpreted as alluding to Morrison and Swannโ€™s dispute, with the word being at the centre of the pairโ€™s row. The artistโ€™s quest for โ€œproofโ€œ, meanwhile, is perhaps a nod to his previous controversial claims that scientists were โ€œmaking up crooked factsโ€ during the pandemic.

 

Per his official website, the forthcoming โ€˜Whatโ€™s It Gonna Take?โ€™ โ€œfeatures fifteen new Van Morrison compositions that collectively reflect the artistโ€™s indefatigable drive to record and perform live in front of audiences.โ€

 

The album also includes the songs โ€˜Fighting Back Is The New Normalโ€™, โ€˜Fodder For The Massesโ€™, โ€˜Canโ€™t Go On This Wayโ€™ and โ€˜Damage And Recoveryโ€™.

 

In response to Swann taking legal action last year, representatives for Morrison said their client โ€œregrets that Mr Swann considered it necessary to issue proceedingsโ€ and that they were โ€œdisappointed by the publicity that surrounds the issueโ€.

 

Regarding a planned defence for the singer, they said: โ€œMr Morrison asserts within that defence that the words used by him related to a matter of public interest and constituted fair comment.โ€

Last summer saw Morrison end his legal challenge against the Northern Irish government over its ban on live music after COVID restrictions were dropped in the country.

 

Back in August 2020, the singer criticised the โ€œpseudo-scienceโ€ of socially distanced gigs and subsequently shared a series of anti-lockdown songs, including โ€˜No More Lockdownโ€™ which saw him compare the government to โ€œfascist bulliesโ€.
