A high-level hire at the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy, whose past as a drag queen and defender of underage gay prostitution sites has stirred controversy, is earning a salary in the top one percent of all government employees, according to documents obtained exclusively by The National Pulse.

 

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by The National Pulse revealsSam Brinton’s taxpayer funded salary of $178,063, placing him amongst the top one percent of other federal salaries. It is also around five times the national median individual income.

 

Brinton, who received his job offer in allegedly strange circumstances in January 2022, will also enjoy thetop secret β€œQ clearance” level in the Department of Energy. The designation Top Secret is applied to information, β€œthe unauthorized disclosure of which reasonably could be expected to cause exceptionally grave damage to the national security.”

 

Official Job Offer.

The DOE uses its own terminology to classify security clearances, describing the Q-level clearance as β€œsimilar to what is completed by other agencies for a Top Secret National Security Information access clearance.”

 

β€œAccess to Secret Restricted Data requires a Q access authorization,” the agency continues.

 

Job Posting.

The initial job description for Brinton’s post described the position’s security level as β€œCritical-Sensitive (CS)/High Risk.” The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) describes what this classification entails:

 

β€œPotential exists to bring about a material adverse effect on the national security, causing exceptionally grave damage. Any position receiving a position sensitivity designation of CS shall automatically carry with that designation, without further agency action, a High Risk designation.”

 

Brinton’s personal posts have also revealed the gravity of his appointment, sharing on Twitter on June 29th:

 

β€œI lead a staff of hundreds and a budget of millions (with a Nuclear Waste Fund I’m responsible for at over $45 billion) as the leader of the office overseeing the management of the nation’s spent nuclear fuel.”

The true cost of capital was distorted for so long, we now have hundreds of academics– clueless to the underlying serpent inside global markets. When the 6 foot seven, Paul Volcker walked the halls of the Marriner S. Eccles Building of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, our planet embraced about $200T LESS debt than we are staring down the barrel at today. Please call out the risk management imbeciles that make any reference of β€œPowell to Volcker.”

 

In 2021, global debt reached a record $303T, according to the Institute of International Finance, a global financial industry association. This is a FURTHER jump from record global debt in 2019 of $226T, as reported by the IMF in its Global Debt Database. Volcker was jacking rates into a planet with about $200T LESS debt. Please call out the risk management imbeciles that make any reference of Powell to Volcker.

 

Many economists in 2022 are highly delusional – a very dangerous group indeed. When you hike rates aggressively with a strong dollar you multiply interest rate risk, which was already off the charts coming from such a low 2020 base in terms of yield – it's a convexity nightmare. Interest rate hikes today - hand in hand with a strong U.S. Dollar - carry 100x the destructive power than the Carter – Reagan era.

 

At the same time, you add lighter fluid on to the credit risk fire in emerging markets with a raging greenback. Global banks have to mark to market most of these assets. If global rates reset higher and stay at elevated levels, the sovereign debt pile is in gave danger. The response to Lehman and Covid crisis squared (see above) has left a mathematically unsustainable bill for follow on generations. The Fed CANNOT hike rates aggressively into this mess without blowing up the global economy. We are talking about mass - Jonestown delusion on roids.

 

Then Covid-19 placed a colossal leverage cocktail on top. Emerging and frontier market countries currently owe the IMF over $100B. U.S. central banking policy + a strong USD is vaporizing this capital as we speak.

Twitter Experiencing Major Global Outage

Though it likely has nothing to do with the ongoing Elon Musk/Twitter saga, the social media site appears to have gone conspicuously offline this morning around 8:15AM EST. As of the time of this blog post, it has not come back online. Several other people have confirmed to me that they cannot access the site.

 

While the outage is likely just run of the mill and worth chalking up to outages that sites have all the time, the fact that Twitter is in such focus right now can’t be overlooked.

 

DownDetector showed the outages reported in realtime:

 

Curiously, other sites didn’t show up as crashing at the same time (which usually happens when it’s an ISP or cloud problem). Instead, it appears to be isolated to Twitter and Tweetdeck. Here were the top services experiencing problems on Downdetector at the same time:

A window I already had open would not let me Tweet out a link to this article:

 

And Tweetdeck also appeared to not be working, showing a simple error code:

 

Comments from some users seem to indicate it may be working in other counties, like New Zealand.

They "Should Never Know Peace Again": Harvard Instructor Calls For People To "Accost" Justices In Public

We recently discussed the Georgetown law professor who defended β€œmore aggressive” protests targeting the Supreme Court justices, but Harvard clinical instructor Alejandra Caraballo wants to guarantee that β€œThe 6 justices who overturned Roe should never know peace again.”

 

Accordingly, Caraballo is calling for people to β€œaccost them every time they are in public.”

 

That harassment, according to Caraballo, is the β€œcivic duty” of every American.

 

The tweet from Caraballo is the latest example of academics seeking to harass these justices because they hold opposing constitutional views. It is also an example of the addiction to rage that has developed in this country. There is a license that comes with rage that is evident in Caraballo’s writings: β€œSince women don’t have their rights, these justices should never have a peaceful moment in public again.” The tweets even attach photos to assist others in this ignoble enterprise.

 

These calls have continued despite the alleged attempted murder of Justice Brett Kavanaugh at his home recently.

 

As noted by Campus Reform, Caraballo is also an advocate for censorship, calling for Twitter to ban the popular conservative site β€œLibs of TikTok” as a β€œterrorist” enterprise because it shows liberals talking about themselves.

 

I have defended the right of people to protest justices, but having a right does not mean that you cannot abuse that right. Hounding and harassing justices and judges because you do not like their conclusions is wrong and dangerous. Most Americans are appalled by this conduct and we need to collectively condemn those who seek to mete out their own retaliatory justice.

 

As more on the left call for aggressive protests and public confrontations, this harassment is more and more likely to turn violent.

 

There are many unbalanced individuals who will see such calls as a license for violent action. A justice or judge should not have to put his or her family at risk to serve on our courts. These academics are fueling a sense of mob justice that will cause untold harm to our judicial system and the rule of law.

Russia, Ukraine Reach Breakthrough Over Blocked Grain Exports: UN Chief

Is this the beginning of a solution to the Ukraine grain export impasse which has been threatening to put large swathes of dependent populations across the Middle East and Africa on the brink of famine?

 

On Wednesday UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced that warring powers are on the cusp of a deal to free up Black Sea exports after multiple intense rounds of talks in Istanbul, saying an "important and substantive step" was made towards reaching a comprehensive agreement.

 

"Next week, hopefully, we’ll be able to have a final agreement. But, as I said, we still need a lot of goodwill and commitments by all parties," Guterres said from UN headquarters in New York. He qualified that despite this rare instance of Ukraine and Russia engaging the other in negotiations, it remains that "for peace we still have a long way to go."

 

Turkey’s Defense Minister Hulusi Akar also confirmed that a deal is close, saying it would be signed next week, when both sides are expected to meet again. Moscow and Kiev have reportedly agreed to "joint controls for checking grains at harbors" - though details of the draft deal haven't been fully revealed.

 

The BBC additionally reported that talks are appearing to focus on neutral external parties - such as Turkey for example - safeguarding international vessels through the Black Sea:

 

Talks on opening up a "green corridor" through the Black Sea took place in Turkey on Wednesday. But any agreement will require support from President Vladimir Putin, who meets Turkey's president in Iran on 19 July.

 

And Bloomberg sources revealed the following:

 

Talks were held in Istanbul with representatives from Ukraine, Russia and Turkey, plus the United Nations. The sides agreed on the "main technical principles," Turkey’s defense minister said in a statement.

 

Ukrainian and Russian delegations will meet again in Turkey next week to further discuss details, Turkey said. There has been no statement issued yet from Kyiv or Moscow. The parties agreed to form a coordination center, among other discussion points, Turkey said.

 

Further, according to Al Jazeera citing two sources privy to the Istanbul talks, the parties "are close to a deal or perhaps they even have a deal."

 

In a Spring forecast by the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization, it was estimated that the globe will see a 20% decline in global wheat production this year due to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, where the country's Ministry of Agriculture recently warned a third of the country's farmland is occupied or unsafe.

 

The issue of a theoretical deal being reached vs. the reality of actually executing it remains an entirely different question, given the presence of thousands of mines around many of Ukraine's key ports. Russia has put the issue in central focus as it has sought to combat accusations from the West that it alone is to blame for the blockade of crucial wheat supplies from the country. The Kremlin has laid fundamental blame for the crisis on Ukraine's military mining its own ports.

Implying guilt based on a witness asserting his rights β€˜is a McCarthy-esque tactic that offends the Constitution and is unworthy of the United States Congress.’

 

The Jan. 6 Committee is abusing its power by asking inappropriate questions about their fellow Americans’ beliefs and associates, and publicly portraying witnesses who exercise their Fifth Amendment rights as guilty β€” all to put on a show trial.

 

Later on Tuesday, the Jan. 6 Committee will hold yet another public hearing, this one purportedly to focus β€œon the role of extremists” in the attack on the Capitol. While the precise script for the afternoon’s proceedings remains unknown, last week Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin previewed the committee’s plans, telling The New York Times that when public hearings resumed in July, β€œhe intends to lead a presentation that will focus on the roles far-right groups like the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers and 1st Amendment Praetorian played in the Capitol attack.” According to the Times, β€œMr. Raskin has also promised to explore the connections between those groups and the people in Mr. Trump’s orbit.”

 

Recycling the Fifth Amendment Tactic

 

An attorney for 1st Amendment Praetorian, or 1AP, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting free speech, spoke exclusively with The Federalist about the committee’s questioning of 1AP, the group’s founder, and another member of the nonprofit, all of whom she represents. From the framing of the questions posed to her clients, Leslie McAdoo Gordon was left with the firm impression that the Jan. 6 Committee merely wanted video capturing her clients declining to answer the questions for the purpose of impugning their character during the televised hearings.

 

β€œThe committee knew before the depositions that my clients would be asserting their First and Fifth Amendment rights, and also would not answer any questions because the depositions were being held in violation of the rules established by the House,” McAdoo Gordon told The Federalist. So, shortly after the hearing began and the 1AP witnesses made clear they would not answer any questions, the staffers moved to general topic areas and would ask a few prepared questions, then the committee representative would note that he had more questions on the topic and inquire whether if he asked those questions, the witnesses intended to assert the same objections.

 

β€œMy clients would respond β€˜yes’ to that question, so then the committee would move forward with the next topic,” McAdoo Gordon said. β€œBut after covering various topics, the committee staffer at the end volleyed a litany of individual questions to my clients, forcing them to respond to each question with β€˜Rules, First, and Fifth,’ the shorthand we had agreed to with the committee to convey their objections to questions posed.”

US providing Kiev with intelligence on Donbass targets – Moscow

Washington has not only supplied long-range High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to Kiev, but is providing intelligence on targets in Donbass and has even β€œunofficially” sent instructors to Ukraine to help with the hardware, the Russian Foreign Ministry claimed on Thursday.

 

Moscow alleges that the Ukrainian government has ordered troops to shell civilians in the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics with the help of the US-made weapons.

 

Speaking at a media briefing in Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said that Ukrainian forces β€œhave used US-supplied multiple-launch rocket systems HIMARS on all fronts” of late. She added that Washington has been actively sharing intelligence on targets with Kiev, and has even β€œunofficially dispatched instructors, who were helping representatives of the Kiev regime to aim correctly.”

 

Zakharova linked the recent uptick in Ukrainian shelling with the delivery of the US-made rocket systems.

 

She noted that the Ukrainian military β€œhas apparently been ordered by Kiev to use the said launchers against civilians without any hesitation.”

Given that the committee had broadcast video of Michael Flynn asserting his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination in an earlier hearing, McAdoo Gordon said she wouldn’t be surprised if Tuesday’s hearings include clips of her clients refusing to answer the committee’s questions.

After calling the lawmakers out for implying to the public that Flynn was guilty of some crime because he asserted his Fifth Amendment rights, McAdoo Gordon wrote that implying guilt based on a witness asserting his rights, β€œis a McCarthy-esque tactic that offends the Constitution and is unworthy of the United States Congress.” The attorney added that she is β€œforced to anticipate that the Committee will use the same totalitarian tactic to improperly smear 1AP.”

 

The irony is that McAdoo Gordon was working with the committee to arrange for her clients to testify voluntarily, within the bounds of the First Amendment, until the committee concocted what she has called a β€œcockamamie” criminal conspiracy theory. The committee argued in litigation with former Trump attorney John Eastman β€œthat President Trump, Dr. Eastman, and others conspired to defraud the United States by disrupting the electoral count,” supposedly in violation of Section 371 of the federal criminal code, which makes it a crime to β€œconspire to defraud” the United States. The committee’s pushing of what she called a β€œpreposterous” legal theory left McAdoo Gordon β€œwith no option but to recommend that my clients assert their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.”

 

McAdoo Gordon told The Federalist that during her clients’ depositions, the committee asked a series of questions that she likely would have allowed her clients to answer if the meeting had been on a voluntary basis. Putting aside the question of whether the committee was properly constituted, the 1AP’s attorney noted Congress had a legitimate interest in investigating the riots and violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

 

β€œWhat 1AP did, or more accurately put, didn’t do, on Jan. 6 was relevant to the committee’s investigation into the riot and the violence at the Capitol, and I was working to arrange for my clients to voluntarily provide the committee with that information,” McAdoo Gordon said. Likewise, the committee had questions about a couple tweets my clients sent on the sixth, and again, such questions were relevant to the Jan. 6 investigation. β€œ

 

β€œBut once the committee advanced the absurd Section 371 criminal conspiracy theory, I could no longer recommend my clients speak with the committee,” the attorney explained. McAdoo Gordon did respond to the committee on behalf of her clients, however, after Raskin β€œfalsely described 1AP as a β€˜far right’ group with a β€˜role’ in the β€˜Capitol attack’” in his interview with the Times. β€œAll of those points are false and defamatory,” she told the committee. β€œ1AP is a mainstream, non-partisan group with no role whatsoever in the attack on the Capitol.”

 

Violating the First Amendment

 

It isn’t just the Fifth Amendment the committee has been shredding, however. β€œEven if my clients did not assert the Fifth Amendment, I would have still objected to several questions on First Amendment grounds,” McAdoo Gordon added. While some questions related to Jan. 6 were relevant, the majority of the questions posed to 1AP representatives were none of Congress’s business, McAdoo Gordon stressed. And even the process reveals the warped authoritarianism of the committee, the attorney added.

The committee’s hiding of the transcripts serves to cover their lies and to control the narrative of the show trial, but it also allows the Jan. 6 Committee to hide the wildly inappropriate questions it posed to the witnesses.

β€œA Committee of the United States Congress actually asked my clients those questions,” McAdoo Gordon told The Federalist in an exclusive weekend interview.

 

β€œBefore the deposition, I assured my clients that their political and personal beliefs would not be probed,” the D.C. attorney explained. β€œWhile I knew from the subpoenas the Jan. 6 Committee intended to seek constitutionally protected information concerning other 1AP members, my jaw just kept dropping further when they started to question my clients on what they thought and believed.”

 

The committee also asked Robert Lewis, who is a retired United States Army Green Beret and recipient of the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, and Philip Luelsdorff, a former U.S. Army Ranger, to describe 1AP activities. For whom and for what purpose did they provide volunteer services? Did they provide security? Surveillance? Assistance with legal activities? What training did they provide? And how were they able to afford to provide the training and volunteer services? Where did the money come from? Who made donations? What bank accounts were used? Did the organization accept cryptocurrency?

 

Again, none of those questions concerned the events of Jan. 6. Rather, the committee focused on events long before the Jan. 6 events at the Capitol. For instance, it asked whether 1AP provided security for polling places. Other questions concerned 1AP’s security work at a Nov. 14 rally and a Dec. 12 rally.

 

In essence, the committee is seeking information about 1AP’s members, financial status, donors, and activities. None of that is relevant to the Jan. 6 riots, and all of it is off-limits to the government, the lawyer said. β€œThe Committee had no business asking those questions, so my clients weren’t about to answer them in violation of their First Amendment rights.”

 

β€œThe Committee had cited as β€˜evidence’ against my clients that they obtained a permit for a demonstration the day before the riot. How is obtaining a permit to hold a peaceful protest evidence of a role in a riot the next day? It isn’t,” McAdoo Gordon said. The committee also sought to quiz Lewis and Luelsdorff on their relationship with the Trump family, the White House, the campaign, and numerous specific individuals such as Sidney Powell and Michael Flynn. The staff further asked whether they had been in contact with any of the defense attorneys representing any of the Jan. 6 defendants.

Assuming Guilt with Dishonest Framing

 

Beyond asking inappropriate questions that implicated 1AP’s First Amendment rights, the committee framed several questions in the β€œdo you still beat your wife” format. Before the election, did they provide security β€œin order to overturn the election”? β€œHave you engaged in any activities to overturn the certified election results?” β€œHave you engaged in any activities to reinstall Donald Trump as president of the United States since Jan. 20, 2021?” These questions all presuppose that the β€œelection results” were sought to be β€œoverturned,” as opposed to challenged.

 

But of course, the Jan. 6 Committee’s focus on the few unfounded claims of election fraud, as opposed to the numerous violations of state election law and evidence of illegal voting β€” issues Trump and his legal team pursued β€” aids in the narrative that the protesters wanted to β€œinstall” Trump or overturn the election, as opposed to protest election irregularities. And by using a guilt-by-association strategy, the committee paints not just 1AP and its volunteers as complicit in the violence at the Capitol, but every American who attended the rallies and peacefully protested the disastrous 2020 election.

 

β€œThe committee might be using nicer language, but its questioning is Stalinist in nature nonetheless,” McAdoo Gordon said.

 

The 1AP lawyer is correct. But because the corrupt media is effectively serving as a state-run press for its preferred politicians, most of America will be oblivious to that fact when the hearings resume later today.

Bumper grain harvest predicted for Russia

This year’s production is expected to reach record 138 million tons, market researcher IKAR says

 

Russia is expected to reap its largest grain harvest ever this year, according to the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR).

 

β€œThe forecast for wheat crop has been increased from 88.7 million to 90.5 million tons, the estimate of gross grain harvest – from 133.5 million to 138.5 million tons,” IKAR CEO Dmitry Rylko told Interfax on Thursday.

 

According to Rylko, Russia’s export potential for the current agricultural year (July 2022 to June 2023) will also grow – for wheat, from 42 million to 44 million tons; for overall grain production, from 52 million to 56.1 million tons.

 

The forecast echoes an earlier statement of President Vladimir Putin, who said the wheat harvest could be the biggest β€œin the entire history of Russia.” At the time, citing preliminary data, Putin said the results could allow Russia β€œnot only to meet domestic needs with a margin, but also to increase supplies to the global market for our partners, which is very important for the world food markets.”

 

Russia’s biggest grain harvest ever was recorded in 2017 – 135.5 million tons, including 86 million tons of wheat.

 

In 2020, the figure was 133.5 million tons of grain (including 85.9 million tons of wheat). Last year, the harvest was 121.4 million tons (with 76 million tons of wheat).

 

Russia is projected to retain its leadership in the world’s wheat market in the coming years.

US wants China, India to pay Russia less for crude

Washington is trying to create a buyers’ cartel that would set a price limit on Russian oil

 

The US State Department believes that China and India, the two current major buyers of Russian oil, should be part of the proposed oil price cap mechanism, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Molly Montgomery said on Wednesday.

 

β€œChina and India are importers of Russian oil, and I can say that we are working very actively with partners and allies to help develop a proposal [to limit the price of Russian oil],” Montgomery said during a press briefing.

 

β€œWe see this [price cap] as an opportunity for countries to do something in the international interest, to pay less for energy imports and stabilize the global oil market, so countries should be interested,” she added.

 

According to US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs Erik Woodhouse, the participation of both China and India in the deal could persuade other countries to join in.

 

β€œObviously, China and India are important purchasers of Russian oil. I can say that we’ve been [talking] most intensively with partners and allies to help design a proposal… Perhaps this can work, as well as outreach to countries that we would like to see participate or otherwise support the price cap,” Woodhouse said.

 

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published earlier on Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the US plans to set a price cap for Russian oil which would be profitable enough for the country to continue production. She did not specify the exact numbers, but explained that the mechanism will demand that any tanker carrying Russian oil would only receive financing and insurance from US, UK, and EU institutions if the sales price of the oil is below the cap.

 

Also on Wednesday, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan noted that the introduction of the price cap mechanism will take some time due to the number of details that have to be sorted out. He added, however, that Washington has already been discussing the measure with a number of key oil consuming countries, including China and India.

 

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce on Thursday confirmed that the issue of the Russian oil price cap was discussed between Janet Yellen and China’s vice premier, Liu He, earlier this month. According to a statement from the ministry, the issue of the price cap is a complex one, and should be solved based on the desire of the parties involved to reduce tensions in Ukraine.

The Guardian has reported that Suedi Murekezi was captured in the city of Kherson last month

 

The number of American citizens captured by pro-Russian troops in Ukraine may be higher than previously thought, The Guardian has claimed. The newspaper reported on Wednesday that another US national has been in custody of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) since last month. This is in addition to two other Americans known to be held.

 

According to the report, citing the captive’s brother, Suedi Murekezi, 35, was apprehended in June in the southern Ukrainian port city of Kherson, which is currently under Russian control. Friends of his living in the city first noticed Murekezi’s disappearance on June 8, the paper claimed.

 

His brother, Sele Murekezi, told journalists that Suedi had been residing in Kherson since 2020, having moved to Ukraine two years earlier.

 

The detained man’s relatives insisted that he had not participated in the fighting and had been falsely accused of taking part in pro-Ukrainian protests.

 

Sele was able to reach his brother by phone last Thursday for the first time since his disappearance, The Guardian reported. Suedi reportedly said that he was being held in the DPR city of Donetsk in the same prison as two other American citizens, Alexander Drueke and Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh, who had allegedly served in the Ukrainian military as volunteers prior to their capture. The DPR authorities, however, insist that Drueke and Tai Ngoc Huynh were mercenaries and should be held accountable as such.

 

When asked for comment, the US Department of State confirmed that it was β€œaware of reports” of Murekezi’s detention but declined to go into detail, citing β€œprivacy considerations.”

 

The Guardian also reached out to Russian and DPR authorities but received no response, according to the paper. No official statements regarding the American citizen’s arrest have been forthcoming either.

 

The paper reported that Murekezi was born in Rwanda, but his family fled to the US after the 1994 genocide. He is said to have served in the US Air Force for eight years before retiring in 2017. He subsequently reportedly began investing in cryptocurrencies – presumably an interest that eventually brought him to Ukraine, which was known for its liberal regulation of digital currencies.

 

In early March, Russian forces took over Kherson, where the American had been living.

The Ukrainian military has been accused, by the Russian Defence Ministry, of throwing mothers and their newborn babies out of maternity hospitals in the southern Odessa Region. Wednesday's statement added that medical staff who tried to stop them were allegedly assaulted.

 

β€œIn the settlements of Dobroslav and Krasnoselka of the Limansky district in Odessa Region,Ukrainian militants use hospitals and ambulance stations as command posts and barracks. At the same time, all the patients, regardless of their health condition, as well as maternity ward patients and their newborn children, were ruthlessly kicked out of medical institutions, while medical staff who tried to prevent the neo-Nazis’ cruelty suffered from physical violence,” Mikhail Mizintsev, the head of Russia’s National Defense Control Center, outlined.

Russia responds to US abuse claims

The secretary of state’s allegations of forced deportations is β€œpoor quality Western disinformation,” Moscow said

 

Moscow has dismissed American claims that it forced up to 1.6 million Ukrainians to move to Russia, was confiscating Ukrainian identification documents, and issuing Russian passports instead.

 

The accusations, which were made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday, are β€œpoor quality Western disinformation,” the Russian embassy in Washington said.

 

The top US diplomat accused Russia of abusing Ukrainian citizens in various ways. He cited estimates by sources that β€œindicate that Russian authorities have interrogated, detained, and forcibly deported [to Russia] between 900,000 and 1.6 million Ukrainian citizens, including 260,000 children.”

 

He was apparently referring to the evacuation of civilians from Eastern Ukraine and Donbass republics. Hundreds of thousands of people fled to Russia before and during the ongoing military conflict. Kiev claimed that those refugees were Russian β€œhostages.”

 

Blinken further claimed that Russian forces were β€œseparating families, in an apparent effort to change the demographic makeup of parts of Ukraine.”

 

Moscow has offered Ukrainian citizens a simplified path to Russian citizenship, should they want it. Initially only residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, which Russia recognized as sovereign states in February, were eligible for the scheme, but it was later extended to all Ukrainians.

 

The US also claimed that Russia was β€œdeliberately separating Ukrainian children from their parents and abducting others from orphanages before putting them up for adoption inside Russia.” Blinken cited β€œeyewitnesses, survivors, and Ukraine’s General Prosecutor” as his source for these and other serious accusations.

 

Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, commented on Blinken’s remarks, suggesting that β€œa case like this must have been described” somewhere in a medical encyclopedia.

 

When she discussed the allegations on Thursday on Russian TV, she said they were meant for consumption by a US audience. Blinken’s claims were as β€œabsurd” as Washington’s β€œmantra” that Russian President Vladimir Putin had imposed β€œa tax” and driven American gas prices up, she added.

Ukraine has severed all diplomatic and economic ties with North Korea after Pyongyang recognized the independence of the two Donbass republics.

 

β€œWe consider this decision as an attempt by Pyongyang to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

 

β€œThe North Korean regime’s recognition of the β€˜subjectivity’ of the Russian occupational regimes in Donetsk and Luhansk regions is null and void, will have no legal consequences and will not change the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine,” the ministry said.

 

The statement comes after Pyongyang confirmed on Wednesday that it had officially recognized the independence of the republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, which broke away from Ukraine shortly after the 2014 coup in Kiev. German opposition demands free meth

The Left Party has called for hard drugs to be decriminalized so police can focus on more serious crimes

 

Calling for a β€œfundamental rethink” of the country’s drug policy, Germany’s Left Party (Die Linke) hopes to make small amounts of crystal meth available to addicts under close β€œtherapeutic support,” it announced in a motion on Monday.

 

The party is also seeking to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of meth and other hard drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy, in the hope that reducing the time spent prosecuting addicts will free up police resources for more important matters.

 

Drug users must be β€œconsistently protected from criminal prosecution,” the parliamentary motion states. β€œPolice, public prosecutors, courts and last but not least medical facilities must be relieved and be able to concentrate on important public welfare tasks.”

 

Crystal meth use in Germany has been on the rise for years, with the number of related crimes up by 18.9% in 2020 over the previous year, for a total of 12,000 cases. While newer statistics are not yet available, drug policy experts have warned that the Covid-19 lockdowns likely exacerbated the problem, as they have in other countries.

 

Nor has the Left Party always been in favor of letting meth addicts use with impunity. Drug policy spokesman Frank Tempel explained as recently as 2015 that while he was in favor of legalizing substitutes for meth, which would give addicts β€œcontrolled quality” to rely upon, the substance itself must remain banned. β€œThis stuff is so dangerous you can’t legalize it,” he said.

Hungary declares energy emergency

Budapest will ban exports and boost domestic production ahead of possible winter shortages

 

The Hungarian government declared a state of emergency over tightening energy supplies on Wednesday. Gergely Gulyas, an aide to Prime Minister Viktor Orban, announced that domestic gas and coal production will be stepped up and gas reserves filled before winter.

 

With the EU cutting itself off from Russian energy imports, Gulyas told reporters that the bloc will likely not have enough gas from Autumn onwards. In response to the supply crunch, he announced a seven-point plan, effective from August.

 

Hungary will increase domestic gas production from 1.5 to 2 billion cubic meters, while filling the country’s storage facilities with foreign gas. At present, Gulyas said that the country's reserves are 44% full.

 

Meanwhile, his government will impose a ban on the export of firewood, while increasing domestic coal extraction. At the same time, the coal-fired Matra power plant will be restarted as soon as possible, having been partially shut down since January 2021.

 

The operating hours of the Paks nuclear power plant – which produces more than half of the country’s electricity – will be extended, while customers using more than an allotted amount of power will not be offered fixed rates. Price caps currently ensure that Hungarians pay six times less than market prices for power and eight times less for gas, according to government commissioner Szilard Nemeth.

 

Hungary relies almost entirely on Russia for its natural gas, and has opposed an EU embargo on the vital resource. Orban predicted last month that such a ban β€œwill ruin the whole European economy.” Hungary has also opposed the EU’s phased withdrawal from Russian oil imports by the end of this year, and has been given a waiver to keep purchasing the fuel from Moscow.

NASA’s Webb Captures Dying Star’s Final β€˜Performance’ in Fine Detail

 

Some stars save the best for last.

 

The dimmer star at the center of this scene has been sending out rings of gas and dust for thousands of years in all directions, and NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has revealed for the first time that this star is cloaked in dust.

 

Two cameras aboard Webb captured the latest image of this planetary nebula, cataloged as NGC 3132, and known informally as the Southern Ring Nebula. It is approximately 2,500 light-years away.

 

Webb will allow astronomers to dig into many more specifics about planetary nebulae like this one – clouds of gas and dust expelled by dying stars. Understanding which molecules are present, and where they lie throughout the shells of gas and dust will help researchers refine their knowledge of these objects.

 

This observation shows the Southern Ring Nebula almost face-on, but if we could rotate it to view it edge-on, its three-dimensional shape would more clearly look like two bowls placed together at the bottom, opening away from one another with a large hole at the center.

 

Two stars, which are locked in a tight orbit, shape the local landscape. Webb's infrared images feature new details in this complex system. The stars – and their layers of light – are prominent in the image from Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on the left, while the image from Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the right shows for the first time that the second star is surrounded by dust. The brighter star is in an earlier stage of its stellar evolution and will probably eject its own planetary nebula in the future.

 

In the meantime, the brighter star influences the nebula’s appearance. As the pair continues to orbit one another, they β€œstir the pot” of gas and dust, causing asymmetrical patterns.

 

Each shell represents an episode where the fainter star lost some of its mass. The widest shells of gas toward the outer areas of the image were ejected earlier. Those closest to the star are the most recent. Tracing these ejections allows researchers to look into the history of the system.

 

Observations taken with NIRCam also reveal extremely fine rays of light around the planetary nebula. Starlight from the central stars streams out where there are holes in the gas and dust – like sunlight through gaps in a cloud.

 

Since planetary nebulae exist for tens of thousands of years, observing the nebula is like watching a movie in exceptionally slow motion. Each shell the star puffed off gives researchers the ability to precisely measure the gas and dust that are present within it.

 

As the star ejects shells of material, dust and molecules form within them – changing the landscape even as the star continues to expel material. This dust will eventually enrich the areas around it, expanding into what’s known as the interstellar medium. And since it’s very long-lived, the dust may end up traveling through space for billions of years and become incorporated into a new star or planet.

 

In thousands of years, these delicate layers of gas and dust will dissipate into surrounding space.

NASA’s Webb Sheds Light on Galaxy Evolution, Black Holes

 

Stephan’s Quintet, a visual grouping of five galaxies, is best known for being prominently featured in the holiday classic film, β€œIt’s a Wonderful Life.” Today, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope reveals Stephan’s Quintet in a new light. This enormous mosaic is Webb’s largest image to date, covering about one-fifth of the Moon’s diameter. It contains over 150 million pixels and is constructed from almost 1,000 separate image files. The information from Webb provides new insights into how galactic interactions may have driven galaxy evolution in the early universe.

 

With its powerful, infrared vision and extremely high spatial resolution, Webb shows never-before-seen details in this galaxy group. Sparkling clusters of millions of young stars and starburst regions of fresh star birth grace the image. Sweeping tails of gas, dust and stars are being pulled from several of the galaxies due to gravitational interactions. Most dramatically, Webb captures huge shock waves as one of the galaxies, NGC 7318B, smashes through the cluster.

 

Together, the five galaxies of Stephan’s Quintet are also known as the Hickson Compact Group 92 (HCG 92). Although called a β€œquintet,” only four of the galaxies are truly close together and caught up in a cosmic dance. The fifth and leftmost galaxy, called NGC 7320, is well in the foreground compared with the other four. NGC 7320 resides 40 million light-years from Earth, while the other four galaxies (NGC 7317, NGC 7318A, NGC 7318B, and NGC 7319) are about 290 million light-years away. This is still fairly close in cosmic terms, compared with more distant galaxies billions of light-years away. Studying such relatively nearby galaxies like these helps scientists better understand structures seen in a much more distant universe.

 

This proximity provides astronomers a ringside seat for witnessing the merging and interactions between galaxies that are so crucial to all of galaxy evolution. Rarely do scientists see in so much detail how interacting galaxies trigger star formation in each other, and how the gas in these galaxies is being disturbed. Stephan’s Quintet is a fantastic β€œlaboratory” for studying these processes fundamental to all galaxies.

 

Tight groups like this may have been more common in the early universe when their superheated, infalling material may have fueled very energetic black holes called quasars. Even today, the topmost galaxy in the group – NGC 7319 – harbors an active galactic nucleus, a supermassive black hole 24 million times the mass of the Sun. It is actively pulling in material and puts out light energy equivalent to 40 billion Suns.

 

Webb studied the active galactic nucleus in great detail with the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). These instruments’ integral field units (IFUs) – which are a combination of a camera and spectrograph – provided the Webb team with a β€œdata cube,” or collection of images of the galactic core’s spectral features.

 

Much like medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the IFUs allow scientists to β€œslice and dice” the information into many images for detailed study. Webb pierced through the shroud of dust surrounding the nucleus to reveal hot gas near the active black hole and measure the velocity of bright outflows. The telescope saw these outflows driven by the black hole in a level of detail never seen before.

 

In NGC 7320, the leftmost and closest galaxy in the visual grouping, Webb was able to resolve individual stars and even the galaxy’s bright core.

 

As a bonus, Webb revealed a vast sea of thousands of distant background galaxies reminiscent of Hubble’s Deep Fields.

 

Combined with the most detailed infrared image ever of Stephan’s Quintet from MIRI and the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), the data from Webb will provide a bounty of valuable, new information. For example, it will help scientists understand the rate at which supermassive black holes feed and grow. Webb also sees star-forming regions much more directly, and it is able to examine emission from the dust – a level of detail impossible to obtain until now.

 

Located in the constellation Pegasus, Stephan’s Quintet was discovered by the French astronomer Γ‰douard Stephan in 1877.

NASA’s Webb Reveals Cosmic Cliffs, Glittering Landscape of Star Birth

 

This landscape of β€œmountains” and β€œvalleys” speckled with glittering stars is actually the edge of a nearby, young, star-forming region called NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. Captured in infrared light by NASA’s new James Webb Space Telescope, this image reveals for the first time previously invisible areas of star birth.

 

Called the Cosmic Cliffs, Webb’s seemingly three-dimensional picture looks like craggy mountains on a moonlit evening. In reality, it is the edge of the giant, gaseous cavity within NGC 3324, and the tallest β€œpeaks” in this image are about 7 light-years high. The cavernous area has been carved from the nebula by the intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from extremely massive, hot, young stars located in the center of the bubble, above the area shown in this image.

 

The blistering, ultraviolet radiation from the young stars is sculpting the nebula’s wall by slowly eroding it away. Dramatic pillars tower above the glowing wall of gas, resisting this radiation. The β€œsteam” that appears to rise from the celestial β€œmountains” is actually hot, ionized gas and hot dust streaming away from the nebula due to the relentless radiation.

 

Webb reveals emerging stellar nurseries and individual stars that are completely hidden in visible-light pictures. Because of Webb’s sensitivity to infrared light, it can peer through cosmic dust to see these objects. Protostellar jets, which emerge clearly in this image, shoot out from some of these young stars. The youngest sources appear as red dots in the dark, dusty region of the cloud. Objects in the earliest, rapid phases of star formation are difficult to capture, but Webb’s extreme sensitivity, spatial resolution, and imaging capability can chronicle these elusive events.

 

These observations of NGC 3324 will shed light on the process of star formation. Star birth propagates over time, triggered by the expansion of the eroding cavity. As the bright, ionized rim moves into the nebula, it slowly pushes into the gas and dust. If the rim encounters any unstable material, the increased pressure will trigger the material to collapse and form new stars.

 

Conversely, this type of disturbance may also prevent star formation as the star-making material is eroded away. This is a very delicate balance between sparking star formation and stopping it. Webb will address some of the great, open questions of modern astrophysics: What determines the number of stars that form in a certain region? Why do stars form with a certain mass?

 

Webb will also reveal the impact of star formation on the evolution of gigantic clouds of gas and dust. While the effect of massive stars – with their violent winds and high energy – is often apparent, less is known about the influence of the more numerous low-mass stars. As they form, these smaller stars create narrow, opposing jets seen here, which can inject a lot of momentum and energy into the clouds. This reduces the fraction of nebular material that seeds new stars.

 

Up to this point, scientists have had very little data about the influence of the multitude of young and more energetic low-mass stars. With Webb, they will be able to obtain a full census of their number and impact throughout the nebula.

 

Located roughly 7,600 light-years away, NGC 3324 was imaged by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI).

 

NIRCam – with its crisp resolution and unparalleled sensitivity – unveils hundreds of previously hidden stars, and even numerous background galaxies.

 

In MIRI’s view, young stars and their dusty, planet-forming disks shine brightly in the mid-infrared, appearing pink and red. MIRI reveals structures that are embedded in the dust and uncovers the stellar sources of massive jets and outflows. With MIRI, the hot dust, hydrocarbons, and other chemical compounds on the surface of the ridges glow, giving the appearance of jagged rocks.

 

NGC 3324 was first catalogued by James Dunlop in 1826. Visible from the Southern Hemisphere, it is located at the northwest corner of the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372), which resides in the constellation Carina. The Carina Nebula is home to the Keyhole Nebula and the active, unstable supergiant star called Eta Carinae.
