Lawsuit filed against a US shipping company linked to Beirut blast

 

The families of Beirut port blast victims have filed a lawsuit against US firm TGS Nopec Geophysical, owner of British firm Spectrum Geo for its suspected links to the Ammonium nitrate-carrying ship Rhosus.

 

The probe was filed this week in Texas against the US-Norwegian geophysical services group TGS.

 

Families of the Beirut port blast victims accuse Spectrum of "negligence that resulted in the death of their loved onesโ€.

 

Meanwhile, the prosecutors hope that Spectrum's exact role in the explosion will be clarified.

 

The explosion was described as one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in recent history, killing over 200 people, injuring thousands, and destroying entire neighborhoods.

 

The complaint accuses Spectrum of chartering the Moldovan-flagged Rhosus in 2013 to sail to the port of Beirut, a dilapidated boat containing hundreds of tons of nitrates originally intended for Mozambique.

 

While the ship was not supposed to head to Beirut, Spectrum sent it there to retrieve a large amount of seismic analysis equipment, and as soon as it arrived, it began loading 160 tons of seismic survey equipment that the Lebanese authorities had allegedly previously requested.

 

The ship unloaded the ammonium nitrate and stored it in the Beirut port because the extra load could permanently break and damage the boat. The nitrates were left there for seven years.

 

The complaint says that chartering a boat that is "recklessly unseaworthy and carrying explosives without the necessary permits, is a violation of individual contract terms, local law, and industry best practice, and is ultimately responsible for this horrific explosion."

 

The cataclysmic explosion occurred when the remaining 2,750-tonne stock of ammonium nitrate left by Rhosus seven years earlier caught fire.

 

It is still unknown what caused the fire.

 

The nine plaintiffs are all US citizens and include Sarah Copland, the mother of two-year-old Isaac Copland, who was one of the explosion's youngest victims.

 

Ford O'Brien Landy LLP is the lead counsel in the "strict liability" case, and Accountability Now's lawyer Zena Wakim said TGS' response should be known "in the coming months."

 

"The evidence that will be generated by this lawsuit can also benefit the Lebanese investigation," Wakim said as quoted by AFP.

 

"The spirit of the claim is to benefit all the victims," she added.

 

Two years after the explosion, one of the victims, lawyer Tania Abu Alam, was quoted in Swiss newspaper Le Temps as saying: "There are a lot of gray areas. Why did Spectrum hire the Rhosus (the cargo-carrying ammonium nitrate) to transport earthquake machines when it was a death ship? ".

 

Abu Alam questioned the reason behind the companyโ€™s decision to choose this particular ship from among all available ships, despite the fact that it was already at 300 percent of its maximum allowable capacity, with 2,750 tons of explosives on board, flying the Moldovan flag, and lacking the ramps required to transport the alleged seismic machinery."

Italyโ€™s prime minister, Mario Draghi, says he will resign as coalition collapses

Mario Draghi said he would resign as Italian prime minister on Thursday.

 

His announcement comes after a party in his ruling coalition did not participate in a confidence vote.

 

โ€œI will tender my resignation to the president of the republic this evening,โ€ Draghi told the cabinet, according to a statement released by his office.

 

โ€œThe national unity coalition that backed this government no longer exists,โ€ he added.

 

The confidence vote had become a focal point for tensions within Draghiโ€™s government as its parties prepare to fight each other in a national election due by early 2023.

 

The decision by the 5-Star party to boycott the confidence vote on Thursday had plunged Italy into political uncertainty and risked undermining efforts to secure billions of euros in European Union funds, tackle a damaging drought and reduce its reliance on Russian gas.

 

Draghi raised the stakes by saying he would not want to lead a government without 5-Star, who emerged as the largest party in the previous election in 2018 but have since suffered defections and a loss of public support.

 

It could lead to national elections as early as September or October after other coalition parties said there should be a vote if 5-Star no longer backed the government.

During an extensive opening monologue on Tuesday evening, Fox News host Tucker Carlson walked through the origin of the modern American push for a transformation in the U.S. energy system; as outlined in the Green New Deal advocacy of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and how Joe Biden is implementing the agenda by executive fiat.

 

The Green New Deal is domestically to the U.S. as the Build Back Better agenda is to the rest of the western nations who follow the instructions from the World Economic Forum. Collectively the economies of western government are starting to collapse as the underlying energy policies (climate change) are being implemented.

 

Carlson walks through several examples of countries who have tried and failed to switch from oil, gas and coal to the โ€œgreen renewableโ€ energy programs. Everything from farming to home heating is now under attack by the governmental energy policies of western nations. Civil society is starting to collapse in according to the schedule of the nations who have tried to transition. Perhaps the worst part about it, is that western politicians -like Joe Biden- do not care how much damage is done, they are doing it anyway. WATCH:

 

Something has to change, and soon. As a nation we are going to self-destruct if we do not stop this mad effort to use windmills and solar energy as alternative power sources to oil, coal and natural gas. Already there are signs that states like Texas are bordering on an energy crisis because there is not enough wind to power their windmills.

 

From the complete restructuring of farming under the guise of climate change (the intentional shift to eating bugs and lab-grown meat), to the complete collapse of stable energy as a result of chasing climate change goals, we are fast approaching the point of no easy return.

 

We are not going to like the civil unrest and national instability that comes along with public desperation.

Italian PM Draghi is stepping down

 

Mario Draghi won a confidence vote, but lost his coalition partners

 

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced on Thursday that he would resign. Draghi survived a confidence vote despite his coalition partners in the Five Star Movement abstaining, but said he would step down after meeting with President Sergio Mattarella.

 

The former European Central Bank chief had led a coalition government since last February, but as of late faced persistent criticism from Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte over the rising cost of living.

Carlson said on his show Friday night that McQuaid worked with Christopher Clark as partners at Latham & Watkins and worked on cases together right until McQuaid took the job at the Justice Department.

 

It now looks like McQuaid is doing exactly what he was hired to do, prevent and stop any investigations of Hunter Biden.

Riyadh and "Tel Aviv" normalizing ties is "inevitable," former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Joseph Westphal said Monday, urging US President Joe Biden to mend ties with the kingdom during his upcoming trip to the Gulf state.

 

"I think [normalization is] coming, that's absolutely coming, and it's inevitable. It's inevitable," Westphal told The National News on Monday. Westphal used to be Washington's ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the Obama administration from 2014 until 2017.

 

Recent efforts, such as a push by the Biden administration ahead of Biden's trip to the region that will kick off today, have opened the door for the bolstering of ties.

 

The inevitability of normalization stems from the shift in Saudi Arabia's policy that will take place when Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman takes the place of his father, King Salman, Westphal said, calling the matter a "generational shift" while also citing Riyadh and "Tel Aviv's" common security and economic interests.

 

"King Salman, who I got to know very well when I was there as ambassador and have huge respect for him, he is from the generation that really believes that we should do more to help the Palestinian people," he added. MBS, though, "is of a different generation that sees the world with a different set of lenses."

 

Saudi's policy, he said, will eventually shift as long as Washington continues working in West Asia and "support[ing] the Palestinian people."

 

Saudi Arabia and the Israeli occupation have been working closely together in technology, cyberspace, economy, and security, he said, hinting that Riyadh and "Tel Aviv" would grow closer soon.

 

Biden's visit to Saudi Arabia was described by the former diplomat as "extremely important" in the context of bilateral, regional, and global politics, especially in light of the schism that exists between Washington and Riyadh.

 

Over the past year and a half, ties between the United States and Saudi Arabia have been deteriorating in light of the killing of Jamal Khashoggi and the kingdom's position on oil production, especially following the start of the Ukraine war.

 

Riyadh has rebuffed requests by the United States for more oil, as Saudi Arabia has the potential of easing pressure on supply and prices, which would mitigate the current economic crisis.

 

"[Biden] is a bridge builder. He did it for years and years in the Senate, with Republican opponents and sometimes with his own Democrats who opposed him. He will come around and find a way to work with Prince Mohammed and to restore this relationship in a positive [manner]," the former diplomat said.

 

He proceeded to highlight the "sweeping social and economic reforms" enacted by MBS in Saudi Arabia, hailing the "progress" he made. "He's made mistakes and he's realized those mistakes and now it's time to you to put everything on the table."

 

Biden's visit to Saudi Arabia will see him attending a GCC meeting on Saturday, during which he will mainly discuss security and regional "defense", he said, noting that the US plays a unique role in the region's security.

 

"It focuses on things like security, cyber security, intelligence, as well as economic trade and development. In other words, to create a better union of these countries to protect the trade routes," he said regarding the Gulf Cooperation Council meeting.

 

"This would be just the beginning, the first step, then we will send the secretary of defense, the secretary of state, the secretary of commerce, engage the private sector and others within the region to talk about how we work on all these issues," Westphal stressed.

 

Reports about Biden's visit to Saudi Arabia visit - ironically - come the same day as White House Spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre said Biden's remarks about Saudi Arabia, which he described as a "pariah", still stood.

 

The Biden admin has been cooperating closer and closer with Saudi Arabia in recent months, especially on the Saudi-led war on Yemen, as Washington pushed Riyadh to extend an armistice with Sanaa. Biden also went as far as praising the role of Saudi officials in the armistice, saying that the country "demonstrated courageous leadership" just because it decided to stop dropping bombs on Yemeni civilians - as it has been doing for nearly a decade.

A Minnesota zoo worker is recovering after a camel bit him on the head.

Just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, the Stearns County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of an animal bite at Hemker Park & Zoo, which is located in the small town of Freeport, near St. Cloud.

 

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies learned that the victim, identified as Roger Blenker, was escorting a camel through an alleyway to prepare it for transport to another facility, according to a news release from the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

"During the process, the camel placed Blenker's head into its mouth, biting down on his head. The camel then dragged Blenker by the head approximately fifteen feet," the news release stated.

 

A second employee, identified as Seth Wickson, stepped in to intervene by placing a plastic walking board into the camel's mouth to release its bite from Blenker's head, police say. After Blenker, 32, was freed from the camel's bite, he was able to stand on his own and run to safety.

However, the camel then charged at Wickson, 32, and bit his head. He was able to get to a safe location on his own and refused any medical treatment, according to police.

 

PEOPLE has reached out to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office for comment.

 

Blenker was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Life Link Helicopter and is expected to make a full recovery.

"Our owner did sustain minor injuries," Hemker Park & Zoo wrote in a statement on Facebook shortly after the incident occurred. "The camel was not injured during the interaction and remains in good health. We thank you all for your continued support."

 

In a separate update posted on their Facebook page Wednesday evening, the zoo wrote, "The owner has been examined by the medical providers and per protocol he had to be transferred. He has been alert, oriented and able to move around with some minor injuries that are all non-life threatening โ€ฆ We want to thank all of the medical providers and the support and prayers from everyone. It is greatly appreciated."

 

PEOPLE has reached out to Hemker Park & Zoo for additional comment.

 

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Melrose Ambulance and the Freeport Fire Department.

 

The incident remains under investigation. The zoo is still open to the public.

We reported months ago on flights from the Southern border to the Northeast. There were even flights with children on them. We tracked these charter flights and the children to a New York Adoption agency. These flights were at night.

 

Weโ€™ve obtained information today on illegals trafficked in San Antonio through a major US airport on a major US airline.

 

Illegals are being bussed into terminal B in San Antonio where they are handled at a sort of make-shift counter.

 

At this point, individuals are all given a manila envelope. One group of immigrants was given boarding passes on Southwest Airlines on a flight to Baltimore.

 

The immigrants are then escorted over to Terminal A. They then go through the premium lane, skipping the general boarding area.

 

Below is a copy of a typical boarding pass. Itโ€™s marked with a โ€œSTIPC Bond Releaseโ€ โ€“ weโ€™re not even sure what this means.

Macron issues warning on Ukraine

 

Paris does not want a โ€œthird world warโ€ but will support Kiev, the French president has said

 

France will continue โ€œhelpingโ€ Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday.

 

Paris is seeking an end to the fighting, without it spiraling into a โ€œthird world warโ€ and does not want to become directly involved in hostilities, he added.

 

France should nevertheless increase its military budget in the wake of the hostilities between Kiev and Moscow, Macron told French media. โ€œThe end of summer and autumn will be very harsh,โ€ he warned, suggesting the fighting is set to intensify.

 

โ€œThose who thought the high-intensity war was over were wrong. I asked to evaluate the new risks to adjust our strategy until the end of the year,โ€ the president said.

 

France is set to continue supporting the Ukrainian authorities, both directly and through imposing additional sanctions on Russia, Macron went on. โ€œThis war will last and France will always be there to help Ukraine and slow down the Russian economy,โ€ he said.

 

We want to stop this war without getting involved. We donโ€™t want a third world war.

 

Macron also said Russia was waging a โ€œhybrid warโ€ against Europe, accusing Moscow of cutting gas supplies. The president was referring to Russiaโ€™s state-owned energy giant Gazprom shutting down the Nord Stream 1 pipeline for ten days for annual maintenance this week.

 

France, and Europe as a whole, must be prepared to live โ€œentirely without Russian gasโ€ supply, Macron suggested, adding that he will โ€œask the French to consume less.โ€

 

โ€œWe must try to reduce [gas consumption] to pass the peak of winter. We must do this to avoid complete cuts,โ€œ he said. โ€œEnergy prices went up before the war. The real change in the last few days is Russiaโ€™s decision to cut gas. We are in a hybrid war. Russia is using energy as a weapon of war," Macron added.

 

Russia sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, citing Kievโ€™s failure to implement the Minsk agreements, designed to give the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk special status within the Ukrainian state. The protocols, brokered by Germany and France, were first signed in 2014. Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has since admitted that Kievโ€™s main goal was to use the ceasefire to buy time and โ€œcreate powerful armed forces.โ€

 

In February 2022, the Kremlin recognized the Donbass republics as independent states and demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join any Western military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked.

Electric Cars Are Now Being Targeted For Overloading The Electric Grids During An Energy Crisis

 

Tesla has asked owners in Texas not to charge their cars during a heat wave to help avoid blackouts and overloading the stateโ€™s failing power grid.

 

The alert comes as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) called on residents to conserve energy. They have asked the stateโ€™s residents to refrain from using electricity from appliances and more to stop the grid from being pushed to near-emergency conditions.

 

Tesla stepped up to help the state with a new in-car alert to owners in the state, encouraging them not to charge during peak hours.

 

โ€œA heat wave is expected to impact the grid in Texas over the next few days. The grid operator recommends to avoid charging during peak hours between 3 pm and 8 pm, if possible, to help statewide efforts to manage demandโ€, an in-car alert sent to Tesla owners reads, as reported by Electrek.

 

ERCOT has also asked that people in Texas avoid running appliances between 2 pm and 8 pm. Reuters reported the stateโ€™s risk of losing its power reserves โ€œwith no market solution available.โ€

 

The ERCOT website indicated late Tuesday that it only had about 3,600 megawatts of reserves, which is enough to power three-quarters of a million homes. The lack of power reserves is a genuine concern for more than 26 million state residents.

 

The state is expected to register temperatures of more than 100 degrees in the coming days. The heat also stops wind power from being generated in Texas, which usually provides the state with a quarter of its electricity.

 

In an interview Tuesday with Fox News Digital, energy expert Jonathan Lesser warned that the power crisis in Texas underscores the broader problems with green energy.

 

Lesser argued that due to the lack of reliable utility-scale battery storage infrastructure, forcing a green transition will lead to more power outages.

 

โ€œThe reality is: weโ€™re going to have to get used to more blackouts as long as we continue down this green energy path,โ€ Lesser said. โ€œThe technology simply isnโ€™t there. Youโ€™re going to either have more blackouts or more requirements to conserve energy.โ€

 

Lesser pointed to the lack of reliability of wind energy during the summer.

 

โ€œThe least windy time of year is summer when electricity demand in Texas peaks,โ€ Lesser said. โ€œSo, youโ€™ve got a resource that is at its highest in the spring and fall when electricity demand is lowest. That means the wind as a resource has a low economic value because you want something thatโ€™s available when demand is highest.โ€

 

โ€œSo, itโ€™s not surprising at all that Texas, which has the largest wind capacity of any state in the country, is seeing this problem,โ€ he continued.

 

Lesser pointed out that the U.S. utility-scale battery storage infrastructure is currently insufficient. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the country has about 4,605 megawatts of total battery storage but regularly consumes more than 400,000 megawatts daily.

 

Pushing too quickly for green energy will lead to a lack of power and a direct impact on most Americans.

Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick Appointed To Rule Over Twitter's Delaware Suit Against Elon Musk

 

For the upcoming Twitter versus Elon Musk saga that's going to take place in Delaware's Court of Chancery, the case is going to be overseen by the court's first female chief judge, Kathaleen McCormick.

 

McCormick took on the role last year and "was appointed to the bench in 2021 by Delaware Governor John Carney, a Democrat," according to Bloomberg Law. She is a graduate of Harvard College and Notre Dame Universityโ€™s law school.

 

She will first be tasked with ruling on a request by Twitter to hold a four-day trial in September - a ruling that may give us some idea as to the pace of how quickly the trial may move forward and whether the court sees the case as simple, or complex, to rule on.

Nathan Anderson of Hindenburg Research pointed out on Twitter yesterday that McCormick had recently awarded specific performance - the clause that would, in essence, force Musk to pay up for all of Twitter - in a recent April 2021 case.

Sri Lankan President Lands In Singapore On Saudi Flight As 'Pariah' Status Grows

 

Apparently even close regional allies like the Maldives see embattled Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as too much of a liability to have around for more than a day or two.

 

While he had initially fled his country on a military aircraft Wednesday just as protesters overran his presidential residence in Colombo and were even enjoying his swimming pool, and with his motorcade later being briefly spotted speeding through the streets of Maldive capital of Malรฉ, he's now reported to have arrived in nearby Singapore on Thursday. But it seems protests are following him wherever he goes.

 

CNN reports that Rajapaksa "has fled Maldives on board a flight for Singapore, a high-ranking security source in Colombo told CNN, as anger grows in his home country over his refusal to formally resign."

 

Family members were also being ferried out of the capital as it descended into chaos. To leave the Maldives, he may have had some help from the Saudis, the report continues:

 

Rajapaksa left the capital of the Maldives, Malรฉ, on board a "Saudi flight," the source said. Rajapaksa had been waiting to secure a "private jet" from a close family member in Colombo, but that had "not materialized," the source added.

 

CNN believes the source was referring to Saudia flight 788, which left Malรฉ at 11:30 a.m. according to the source. The flight landed in Singapore at 7:17 p.m. local time Thursday, according to the Changi Airport website. Saudia is the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia.

 

Former prime minister and Acting President Ranil Wickremesingheโ€™s office was also stormed just as Gotabaya was safely in the Maldives.

Court Rules Investigation Into Biden Adminโ€™s Collusion with Big Tech to Censor Opposition Can Move Forward

 

A federal court has granted Missouri and Louisianaโ€™s motion for discovery in a lawsuit that alleges high-ranking members of the Biden administration colluded with the tech giants Meta, Twitter, and YouTube to suppress free speech.

 

The decision paves the way for Missouri Attorney General Erich Schmitt and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry to collect discovery and documents from the Biden administration officials and tech giants that were mentioned in the lawsuit.

 

According to Schmitt, this is the first time a Big Tech censorship lawsuit has had the chance to โ€œlook under the hoodโ€ at alleged censorship collusion between Big Tech and the Biden administration.

 

In their motion for discovery, the AGsโ€™ had requested permission to issue interrogatories and document requests to government defendants and serve third-party subpoenas on a limited number of social media platforms.

 

The AGs intend to use the interrogatories and document requests to request the identities of federal officials that communicated with social media platforms about โ€œdisinformation, misinformation, malinformation, or any form of censorship or suppression of online speechโ€ and to request the nature and content of these communications.

 

They also plan to use third-party subpoenas to seek similar information from a limited number of major social media about the identity of federal officials who communicate with them and the nature and content of those communications.

 

The court said the requests are reasonable and ruled that the AGs can serve document requests and interrogatories to government defendants and serve third-party subpoenas on up to five major social media platforms within five days of its June 12 order. The court added that defendants should respond or object to these discovery requests within 30 days of receiving them.

 

โ€œThe First Amendment obviously applies to the citizens of Missouri and Louisiana, so Missouri and Louisiana have the authority to assert those rights,โ€ the court order stated.

 

The courtโ€™s ruling also laid out a process for resolving any discovery disputes and for the AGs to request depositions.

Missouri and Louisianaโ€™s lawsuit was filed in May and alleged that top-ranking Biden administration officials had colluded with Meta, Twitter, and YouTube to suppress posts about various topics including the Hunter Biden laptop story, the lab-leak theory of COVID-19โ€™s origin, the effectiveness of masks and lockdowns, and the security of voting by mail.

 

The court order in favor of Missouri and Louisiana follows journalist Alex Berenson recently getting a victory in his free speech lawsuit which alleged censorship collusion between Twitter and the government. Twitter reinstated his account after settling the lawsuit and Berenson is still investigating the pressures the government may have placed on Twitter to suspend his account.

 

Before these recent rulings, several other lawsuits that had alleged censorship collusion between the Biden administration and Big Tech companies had been dismissed.

 

Data analyst Justin Hart, whose censorship collusion lawsuit against Twitter, Facebook, President Biden, and the Surgeon General was dismissed, welcomed Missouri and Louisianaโ€™s motion for discovery being granted and described it as a โ€œbig win.โ€

Anti-government protesters in Sri Lanka announced the end of their occupation of government buildings on Thursday, vowing to continue their campaign to depose the President and Prime Minister considering the country's catastrophic economic situation.

 

Protesters had stormed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's palace over the weekend, forcing him to leave for the Maldives the next day, and later on, they also stormed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's office. Rajapaksa had promised to quit on Wednesday, but no statement had been made.

 

In his absence, Rajapaksa appointed the Premier as Acting President, ordering the evacuation of official buildings and instructing security personnel to do "whatever is necessary to restore order."

 

"We are peacefully withdrawing from the Presidential Palace, the Presidential Secretariat, and the Prime Minister's Office with immediate effect, but will continue our struggle," a spokeswoman for the protesters said.

 

Hundreds of thousands of people had sit-ins within the property after Rajapaksa fled and his security guards backed down.

 

Wickremesinghe claimed on television after thousands of protesters stormed his office in Colombo, "Those who come to my office want to prevent me from carrying out my duty as acting president."

 

"We can't allow fascists to take over. That is why I declared a nationwide emergency and a curfew," he added.

 

President on the run

 

On Thursday, Rajapaksa is in the Maldives, expecting a private jet to take him, his wife Ioma, and two bodyguards to Singapore.

 

According to local media, he refused to board a commercial airplane with other passengers after being met with hostility when he arrived in the Maldives early Wednesday.

 

As he walked out of Velana International Airport, he was booed and insulted, and another group mounted a protest in the capital that afternoon, imploring Maldivian authorities not to allow him safe passage. According to Maldivian media, he spent the night at the Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi super luxury resort.

 

They compared his opulent lodgings with his countrymen's economic suffering, with four out of five Sri Lankans skipping meals due to the country's catastrophic economic crisis.

 

According to security sources in Colombo, Rajapaksa is expected to leave the Maldives on Thursday, and his resignation could be announced once he is in the air. "The resignation letter has been prepared," the source told AFP. "No sooner he gives the green light, the Speaker will issue it."

 

The diplomatic sources stated that Rajapaksa's attempts to obtain a visa to the United States were denied because he relinquished his US citizenship in 2019 before campaigning for president.

US, Israel Sign Joint Pledge Denying Nuclear Weapons to Iran

Twitter Back Up for Many Users After Global Outage

 

Twitter was coming back online on Thursday after an hour-long outage kept thousands of users across the globe from accessing the social media website.

 

The outage affected nearly 2,000 users as of 9 a.m. ET, down from the peak of 50,000 incidents an hour earlier, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.

 

The incident comes days after Twitter sued Tesla CEO Musk for violating his deal to buy the company and asked a Delaware court to order the worldโ€™s richest person to complete the takeover.

 

โ€œSome of you are having issues accessing Twitter and weโ€™re working to get it back up and running for everyone. Thanks for sticking with us,โ€ the social media company said in a tweet.

 

Twitterโ€™s status dashboard showed it was investigating the issue with some of its application programming interfaces.

 

Twitter is hosted on Amazon Web Services and began using Google Cloud Platform as the secondary vendor from 2018, according to Well Fargo Securities analyst Brian Fitzgerald.

 

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t seem to be a problem with its cloud vendors as other services continue to run,โ€ Fitzgerald told Reuters.

 

Twitter had suffered another widespread outage in February that it blamed on a software glitch.

Chopra has sought further regulations โ€œto determine how to implement existing law more effectively to ensure that families and small businesses benefit from a competitive market,โ€ noting it is a โ€œprivilegeโ€ of banks to merge and โ€œnot a right.โ€ Senate Banking Committee Republicans have argued that the CFPBโ€™s bank mergers statement was โ€œillegitimateโ€ and violated the FDICโ€™s โ€œtradition of working independent from partisan political influence.โ€

 

โ€œTrying to force independent agencies to function as partisan rubber stamps violates the historic norms of how these agencies were designed to function,โ€ Pete McGinnis, a spokesman for FGI, told the DCNF. โ€œDirector Chopraโ€™s attempt to takeover and turn the FDIC into a political tool is not only a threat to the FDIC itself but also an attack on the objectivity of other independent federal agencies.โ€

 

The CFPB was launched in 2011 and oversees more than 5,000 banks. Chopra was nominated by President Joe Biden in February 2021 to lead the agency.

Significant food system change is needed to address food security and climate challenges, but it risks decimating farm incomes. Policy analyst Anne Finnegan examines a new OECD FAO report.

 

The next decade will bring significant pressure on the global food system to transform radically.

 

While much of the current focus and debate in on reducing greenhouse gas emissions (21-37% which come from food) and halting and restoring biodiversity loss, the challenge is much broader.

 

Implementing World Health Organisation food targets could be a huge win for health, climate and limiting hunger, but would be challenging for farming according to a new report from OECD-FAO.

 

Food systems around the world face a triple challenge of providing food security and nutrition to a growing global population, providing livelihoods to those along the food supply chain and contributing to environmental sustainability.

 

Globally about two billion people do not have regular access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food and a similar number are overweight or obese.

 

At the same time, technical and structural change are putting pressure on those working on half a billion farms worldwide and all along the food supply chain.

 

Business as usual is not the answer

 

There are no simple solutions. Following a business as usual path, zero hunger would not be achieved by 2030 and greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture would continue to increase, according to the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2022-2031.

 

It forecasts that average global productivity would need to increase by 28% over the next decade to achieve zero hunger. Thatโ€™s more than triple the increase recorded in the last decade.

 

The OECD-FAO assert that comprehensive action to boost agricultural investment and innovation and to enable transfer of knowledge, technology and skills are urgently required in order to put the agricultural sector on the path for sustainable productivity growth and the transformation of sustainable food systems.

 

Current diet and population trends increase risk

 

OECD-FAO state that current dietary and population growth trends will exacerbate risks to both people and the planet.

 

Global diets have changed considerably in the past 50 years, with increased consumption of resource-intensive and energy-dense foods which has led to a rise in overweight and obese people .

 

Growing population and rising per-capita food consumption have also increased environmental resource pressure and degradation and led to a rise in greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, forestry and other land use.

 

The solution may lie in achieving the World Health Organisations (WHO) targets on fat and sugar.

 

While this would have a positive impact on food security and nutrition, the reduction in food prices and global production resulting from this change in diets negatively affects farmersโ€™ livelihoods, according to FAO-OECD.

 

Germany, in the past few weeks, has launched the development of a sustainable and healthy nutrition strategy. The ambition is to work towards more plant-based and less sugar-, fat- and salt-based diets.

 

Everything but farming wins

 

OECD-FAO modelling examined the impact over a 10-year period of implementing the WHO targets of reducing free sugar consumption (added sugars in any form) to a maximum of 10% and fat to a maximum of 30% of appropriate caloric intake.

 

The results show that such a change in diet would have a large impact on food security and nutritional outcome, with the prevalence of obesity and overweight people declining by 46% and 28% respectively compared to the baseline.

 

As prices fall for most commodities, global food expenditure decreases by 35%, resulting in a 3% decline in the prevalence of undernourishment at the global level.

 

However, this dietary change also has a significant impact on farmer livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

 

Strong price declines for sugar (-28%), poultry (-44%), pork (-62%), beef (-63%), butter (-73%) and cheese (-53%) result in a 30% drop in farm revenues relative to the baseline. Lower production of several commodities, including emission intensive products such as meats and dairy result in a 10% decline in GHG emissions.

 

The triple challenges of food systems have significant costs and consequences for economies, society and have a huge human toll.

 

The analysis shows that the solutions are not simple. Ensuring an adequate livelihood for farmers will be key as systems transition.

 

The plan to bridge the gap of farm income loss, potentially from carbon farming, needs to realistic and achievable. And critically it needs to come soon.

 

However, farmers too must understand that the challenges are not purely environmental and have significant societal costsโ€ฆ.

Judge Erika Balloutold a defendant that he should have walked away from officers, after being arrested for committing battery against an officer in Nevada while on probation.

 

Footage of the exchange shared by KLAS shows Judge Ballou, who is black, saying: 'You're the one making the decisions not to walk away from cops. You're a black man in America.

 

'You know you don't want to be nowhere where cops are. Listen to me.

 

'You know you don't want to be nowhere where cops are cause I know I don't, and I'm a middle-aged, middle-class black woman.

 

'I don't want to be around where the cops are because I don't know if I'm going to walk away alive or not. You know that.'

 

The Clark County District attorney's office was seeking the revocation of the probation of the unnamed man, who Judge Ballou was addressing on July 11.

 

The Las Vegas Police Protective Association is now calling for her to quit her post over the controversial comments.

She ruled that the defendant, whose identity is not known, was in violation of his probation which she then revoked.

 

Judge Ballou reduced his sentence from original 24 to 60-months to 19 to 48 months.

 

She added: 'Even if the cop like came after and was harassing your group, you should have walked away instead of staying.

 

'You needed to walk away because you knew you were on probation, you knew.'

 

The LLVP, which represents Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers, has now called for her to quit over the comments after being sent the footage.

A spokesman said: 'On behalf of the men and women of law enforcement, the Las Vegas Police Protective Association takes exception to Judge Erika Ballou's disparaging comments about police officers.

 

'We call upon Judge Ballou to resign from the bench. We also ask the Judicial Ethics Commission to sanction her for violating the Nevada Code of Judicial Conduct.

 

'Among other obligations, the rules require the judiciary to, '[A]spire at all times to conduct that ensures the greatest possible public confidence in their independence, impartiality, integrity, and competence.'

 

'Judge Ballou has demonstrated that she is biased against law enforcement and cannot live up to the standards required of a jurist.

โ€œI canโ€™t say much about this other than whoever those 30 people who allegedly spoke to one of these [Yahoo News] reporters โ€” they should all be prosecuted for speaking about classified activity inside the Central Intelligence Agency,โ€ Pompeo said.

 

At the same time, Pompeo declined to respond to many of the details in the Yahoo News account and confirmed that โ€œpieces of it are true,โ€ including the existence of an aggressive CIA campaign to target WikiLeaks in the aftermath of the organizationโ€™s publication of highly sensitive so-called Vault 7 documents revealing some of the CIAโ€™s hacking tools and methods.

Live Babies Left to Die After Failed Abortions in Minnesota, Report Reveals

 

Several infants were left to die after being born alive during botched abortions in Minnesota in 2021, according to a state health report.

 

Abortion procedures resulted in the birth of live infants in five separate incidents, and life-saving measures were not reported to have been used in any of the incidents, the Minnesota Health Department report found.

 

Two infants were pre-viable and were left to die with no attempts made to save their lives, according to the report. One infant with an unspecified fetal abnormality was also left to die without medical care.

 

In two instances, infants were born alive after abortions and given โ€œcomfort care measuresโ€ before dying; the report makes no note of whether life-saving measures were attempted in these cases.

 

The Minnesota Legislature requires abortion providers to report when infant children are born alive following failed abortions, according to the report. State law also recognizes born-alive abortion survivors as people and requires practitioners to afford them proper medical practice including reasonable measures to preserve the childโ€™s life and health.

 

In total, 10,136 abortions were reported in the state throughout 2021.

Companies will soon be forced to pay $159 for every tonne of CO2 emitted, marking an additional $53 per tonne. The government claims this will cut CO2 levels by 3.7 million tonnes in just one year.

 

โ€œThis incentivizes companies to clean up for themselves,โ€ the WEF reported. In the midst of an extreme energy crisis, punishing energy suppliers will undoubtedly backfire. These costs will be passed along to the already struggling consumer. Even the World Bank admitted that the poor will suffer from the carbon tax.

Ukraine cuts ties with North Korea

 

Ukraine has severed relations with North Korea after Pyongyang recognized two eastern territories of Ukraine as independent.

 

โ€œWe consider this decision as an attempt by Pyongyang to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,โ€ the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.

 

โ€œThe North Korean regimeโ€™s recognition of the โ€˜subjectivityโ€™ of the Russian occupational regimes in Donetsk and Luhansk regions is null and void, will have no legal consequences, and will not change the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine,โ€ the statement said.

 

Russian media reported earlier on July 13 that North Korea had recognized the โ€œindependenceโ€ of parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions occupied by Moscow-backed separatists.

 

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministryโ€™s statement also condemned North Koreaโ€™s decision and said in response to the โ€œunfriendly actโ€ Ukraine was severing diplomatic relations with Pyongyang.

 

Political and economic contacts had already been suspended due to international sanctions imposed on North Korea over its nuclear weapons program.

 

Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said North Koreaโ€™s decision said more about Moscowโ€™s โ€œtoxicityโ€ than Pyongyangโ€™s.

GOP senator blocks bill to protect interstate travel for abortion

 

GOP Sen. James Lankford (Okla.) on Thursday blocked a Democratic request to unanimously pass a bill seeking to protect interstate travel for abortion.

 

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), joined by a string of Democratic senators, had sought consent to pass a bill that would prevent states from punishing women who travel to other states where abortion is legal to get the procedure.

 

The measure would also protect health care providers who provide abortions to out-of-state patients.

 

โ€œDoes that child in the womb have the right to travel in their future?โ€ Lankford said in objecting. โ€œDo they get to live?โ€

 

โ€œThereโ€™s a child in this conversation as well,โ€ he added.

 

With full-scale legislation to codify Roe v. Wade lacking the votes to pass the upper chamber, Democrats have looked for other legislative responses after the Supreme Court struck down the nearly 50-year decision that established a constitutional right to abortion.

 

A series of Democratic senators had spoken in favor of the measure before the request Thursday.

 

Cortez Masto said the bill was needed to protect abortion providers even in states where abortion remains legal, saying she has heard of some who are worried about being sued if they provide abortions for out-of-state patients.

 

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) pointed to reports that conservative groups are โ€œright now drafting legislation to ban travel for abortion.โ€

 

While Democrats said the right to travel for abortion is constitutionally protected as well, they sought to provide additional protection in law.

 

โ€œAnyone telling you this is not a threat is not paying attention,โ€ Murray said.

 

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) said that โ€œif people from other states need to come to Colorado to access the care they need, Congress has the obligation to shield them from prosecution.โ€

 

โ€œAnd we need to make sure that health care providers no matter where they are, Colorado and other states, are safe from prosecution, to say nothing of the women themselves, to say nothing of teenage girls themselves,โ€ he continued.

Italy's President Mattarella rejects Prime Minister Draghi's resignation

Rome (CNN)Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said he would resign later Thursday after the 5-Star movement, the largest party in the coalition government, withdrew its support in a parliamentary confidence vote.

 

Despite the 5-Star boycott, Draghi's measures passed by 172 to 39. However, it left the government at real risk of collapse and could lead to an early election.

"I want to announce that this evening I will present my resignation to the President of the Republic," Draghi said in a statement.

"Today's votes in Parliament are very significant from a political point of view. The majority of national unity that has supported this government since its creation is no longer there," he added.

But Italy's President, Sergio Mattarella, has rejected Draghi's resignation, the Italian Presidency said in a statement. Mattarella instead asked Draghi to address the parliament in order to assess the political situation.

"The President of the Republic did not accept the resignation and invited the Prime Minister to appear before Parliament to make communications, so that an assessment of the situation that has arisen as a result of the outcome of the session held today in the Senate of the Republic could be carried out in its proper forum," the statement said.

Draghi was appointed Prime Minister if Italy in 2021 to help the country recover from the Covid-19 crisis. He was seen as a safe pair of hands that would be able to responsibly use the European Union's Covid recovery funds. Draghi had previously served as President of the European Central Bank from 2011 to 2019. Upon taking the job he appointed a cabinet comprising of people from a wide range of Italy's political parties.

Draghi had previously said that he would not lead a government that did not include 5-Star, the largest party in Italy's party. The populist 5-Star movement objected to Draghi's cost-of-living package on the grounds it didn't go far enough, though it had been threatening to withdraw its support for a long time.

Israel sent a new shipment of protective equipment to Ukraineโ€™s emergency services, amid Russiaโ€™s near five-month-long invasion of its neighbor, the Defense Ministry said in a statement Thursday.

 

Defense Minister Benny Gantz had announced Tuesday that Israel would send a further 1,500 helmets, 1,500 protective vests, hundreds of mine protection suits, 1,000 gas masks, and dozens of hazmat filtration systems.

 

The equipment was loaded onto a flight that will first take the cargo to a neighboring European country. From there it will be moved into Ukraine.

 

The shipment set off as visiting US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Yair Lapid were set to sign a joint strategic partnership declaration in Jerusalem covering a range of defense and regional issues, including a response to Ukraine.

 

Jerusalem has avoided providing direct military aid to Kyiv โ€” including offensive arms or advanced defensive technology โ€” since Russian troops invaded Ukraine on February 24, in an attempt to avoid sparking a crisis with Moscow.

 

Israel is one of the few countries that maintains relatively warm relations with both Ukraine and Russia.

 

But Israel has found itself at odds with Russia as it has increasingly supported Ukraine while seeking to maintain freedom of movement in Syriaโ€™s skies, which are largely controlled by Moscow.

Putin gets tougher on foreign agents with new law

 

Russian or foreign legal entities, public associations and foreign agencies that are not legal entities, as well as individuals with or without citizenship, can be recognized as foreign agents

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed the law โ€˜On control over the activity of individuals under foreign influenceโ€™.

 

The document, posted on the official portal of legal information, summarizes the current norms of the Russian legislation on foreign agents and introduces some new provisions, subsequently coming into effect on December 1, 2022.

 

Thus, the law defines a foreign agent as a person who has received support or is under foreign influence in other forms and carries out political activities, collects data on military and military-technical activities of the Russian Federation or distributes reports and materials intended for an unlimited number of people.

 

Russian or foreign legal entities, public associations and foreign agencies that are not legal entities, as well as individuals with or without citizenship, can be recognized as foreign agents.

 

That being said, Russian public authorities, political parties, state corporations and religious associations cannot be recognized as foreign agents. In addition, employers' associations and chambers of commerce and industry registered in line with legally-established procedures cannot be recognized as foreign agents, as well.

 

The law specifies the list of foreign sources. They include foreign states and their public authorities, international and foreign organizations, foreign citizens, stateless persons, as well as foreign sources that donโ€™t establish a legal entity. Citizens and legal entities of the Russian Federation receiving money from such persons and their proxies or acting as intermediaries in receiving financial aid, can also be listed among foreign sources.

 

The law provides for the creation of a unified register instead of the currently existing four. Also, a register of private individuals affiliated with foreign agents will be created.

 

Individuals may be removed from the register of foreign agents if they had not received financial or other assistance from foreign sources within a year before they submitted a relevant application. Also, a foreign agent may be removed from the register if the individual in question turns down funding and other aid from foreign sources within three months after being put on the list.

 

If a foreign agent's site violates the legislation, the Ministry of Justice may send a request to the communications supervisor to restrict access to it. In addition, the law forbids foreign agents to teach and educate minors in Russia, and to produce informational products for children and teenagers. Foreign agents are not entitled to state financial support or grants.

 

Also, the law prohibits foreign agents from investing in strategic enterprises, which are significant for the defense and security of the country.

45 nations pledge to coordinate evidence of war crimes in Ukraine

 

Russia has repeatedly denied involvement in war crimes and deliberately targeting civilians since it invaded Ukraine in February.

 

The United States and more than 40 other countries agreed on Thursday to coordinate investigations into suspected war crimes in Ukraine, shortly after what Kyiv said was a Russian missile strike that killed civilians far from front lines.

Cruise missiles hit two community facilities, houses were destroyed, a medical center was destroyed, cars and trams were (set) on fire," Zelensky said by video link. "This is the act of Russian terror."

 

The Russian defense ministry did not immediately comment on the reports from Vinnytsia.

 

On Thursday, 45 countries at the conference in The Hague - headquarters of the International Criminal Court (ICC) - signed a political declaration to work together on investigations into war crimes in Ukraine.

 

Those countries included European Union states as well as Britain, the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia.

 

They also pledged 20 million euros ($20 million) to assist the ICC, as well as the prosecutor general's office in Ukraine and United Nations support efforts.

 

With some 23,000 war crimes investigations now open and different countries heading teams, evidence needs to be credible and organized, officials said.

 

Separately, Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra said the Netherlands would also consider setting up a special international Ukraine war crimes tribunal, in part because neither Ukraine nor Russia are members of the ICC.

 

"We have to fill a vacuum and the ICC here doesn't have the jurisdictions so I can imagine we do look into coming up with such a tribunalโ€ฆWe will take a look into this," he said.

Uber Hit With Lawsuit From 550 Women Who Say Drivers Sexually Assaulted Them

 

Hundreds of women have joined together to file a lawsuit against ride-share app Uber, alleging they were sexually assaulted by the companyโ€™s drivers. The lawsuit is yet another setback for Uber, as its corporate practices and culture have come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks.

 

On Wednesday, attorneys at Slater Slater Schulman LLP filed the complaint in the San Francisco County Superior Court against Uber. The lawsuit alleges that the women were "kidnapped, sexually assaulted, sexually battered, raped, falsely imprisoned, stalked, harassed, or otherwise attacked by Uber drivers.โ€

 

The lawyers representing the women accused Uber of neglecting passenger safety and maintaining practices that they say protect drivers with histories of violence or sexual assault. Among them are Uberโ€™s refusal to institute fingerprint checks for criminal histories, a โ€œthree strikes ruleโ€ that they allege protects predatory driversโ€ and a refusal to install car cameras to watch for bad behavior.

 

"There is so much more that Uber can be doing to protect riders," said Adam Slater, a founding partner of Slater Slater Schulman. "But the company refuses to, and that's why my firm has 550 clients with claims against Uber and we're investigating at least 150 more. Acknowledging the problem through safety reports is not enough. It is well past time for Uber to take concrete actions to protect its customers."

 

According to the companyโ€™s website, Uber subjects drivers to a background investigation performed by a third-party company. The drivers are checked for valid U.S. driver's licenses, years of experience driving, and a criminal background check to disqualify potential hires with violent histories. However, Uber has refused to submit its drivers to fingerprint checks with the FBI with the company arguing that these databases are faulty or outdated.

 

The complaint comes days after the company released its second safety report, covering 2019 to 2020, showing 3,824 Uber drivers and riders reported sexual assaults, down 38% from the previous report, which covered 2017 and 2018.

 

In a statement, a Uber spokesperson called sexual assault a "horrific crime" and that the company takes seriously reports against their drivers. The company declined to comment on the specific lawsuit, but insisted that they "keep safety at the heart of [Uber's] work."

 

The lawsuit follows an expose by an international consortium of journalists that cataloged Uberโ€™s aggressive business tactics, which included moves to thwart authorities who investigate its practices.

 

Among them was evidence that Uber included a โ€œkill-switchโ€ to thwart investigators looking into its practices around the world. In India, it was found that Uber flouted local regulations that required its cabs to include a โ€œpanic buttonโ€ by not including one or the button itself proved dysfunctional.
