Could this have been done by supplying enriched uranium well above the norms to the storage facilities at the Zapadnaya nuclear power plant?

 

Could documents detailing this plan have been one of the targets of the Bidan-ordered raid on MAL?

 

Could this be a reason why Zelensky is continuing to order suicide raids on the Zaporizhzhya NPP? In an attempt to secure this enriched uranium before Putin discovers it in clearly marked Westinghouse barrels?

A prominent Russian figure, political scientist, analyst, statistician, economist, publicist, popular blogger Mikhail Leonidovich Khazin (a short bio in Eng here) in an interview with "Interpretation" host Ainis Petkus of August 16, presented his "hypothesis" that there is a close connection between the shelling of the Zaporizhzhya NPP and the searches of Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence.

If it turns out that Biden violated the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty with his decision, even Democrats will vote for impeachment, because this is a thing that the American establishment is terrified of," Khazin said on the YouTube channel Interpretation.

 

"The Russian Defence Ministry believes that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to create an exclusion zone around the Zaporizhzhia NPP with the subsequent introduction of NATO peacekeepers and Western observers. Poll: Democrat Patty Murray’s Lead Dips Below 3 Points in Washington Senate Race

Democrat Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) leads her Republican opponent Tiffany Smiley by under three points in deep blue Washington state.

 

According to new polling from Trafalgar Group, Murray, who has been serving since 1993, only leads Smiley by 2.9 points.

 

There were also nearly eleven percent more Democrats (44.2 percent) responding to the poll than Republicans (33.4 percent), with 22.4 percent unaffiliated.

 

Women also responded at a higher rate than men in this poll, 53.1 percent to 46.9 percent — showing a 6.2 percent difference.

 

The poll comes as somewhat of a surprise given Washington’s history of being a very far-left state

 

The poll was conducted between August 30 and September 1, 2022, among 1,087 likely general election voters and has a margin of error of 2.9 percent.

 

Murray has handily won most of her elections, with the closest call coming in 2010 when she beat her challenger by just under five points.

 

She won her 2016 election in a landslide with about an 18-point spread.

 

Smiley, who is a nurse, is a newcomer to politics looking to unseat the longtime incumbent in a race the Cook Political Report rates as a “Solid D” seat.

Initially, Lightfoot balked at the migrant buses by calling them “racist and xenophobic.” While visiting a shelter last week, Lightfoot called Abbott’s buses “immoral, unpatriotic” and claimed the operation “defies the values of who we are as Americans.”

 

“We received families, single men, a mix of folks from Latin America bused here inhumanly from Texas … we can disagree on policy and politics, but you don’t treat people this way,” Lightfoot told the Chicago Tribune.

 

After having received just 125 border crossers on buses from Texas, Lightfoot’s office launched a website pleading with Chicago residents to donate gift cards, clothing, baby formula, and other necessities to the new arrivals.

 

At the same time, Lightfoot has asked the federal government for help.

 

The roughly 125 border crossers who have arrived in Chicago over the last week are a fraction of what American border communities witness daily on the United States-Mexico border.

 

In one week, for instance, agents in the Del Rio, Texas area apprehended almost 13,000border crossers and illegal aliens — averaging almost 1,900 apprehensions a day in the region — which is about a third of Del Rio’s total population.

 

For Texas, Abbott’s migrant busing operation is a massive cost saver.

 

Whereas Texans have paid about $12 million so far to bus migrants to Democrat-controlled sanctuary cities, the cost to state taxpayers for illegal immigration runs at about $11 billion a year, indicating that Abbott’s operation is easily paying for itself.

Fifty-five people were shot, 11 of them fatally, during Labor Day weekend in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) Chicago.

 

Breitbart News kept tabs on the violence as the weekend progressed, noting 17 people were shot Friday into Sunday morning, four of them fatally.

 

After another 24 hours, the time-frame of Friday into Monday morning, the number of shooting victims had jumped to 46 with a total of seven fatalities.

 

On Tuesday morning, ABC 7 / Chicago Sun-Times pointed out that the number of shooting victims was at 55 for the entire holiday weekend, with 11 fatalities.

 

One of the most heinous attacks of the weekend occurred Sunday night, when 20-year-old David DeVeaux Jr., and 18-year-old Jason Mundo, were shot by suspects carrying multiple firearms “in the 8600-block of South Kingston Avenue.” Police believe no less than two suspects “armed with a rifle and two handguns walked up and opened fire” on DeVeaux and Mundo, killing them.

 

DeVeaux’s family had just been to the grocery store to get supplies for their Labor Day barbeque. They said DeVeaux walked outside to help bring the groceries into the house and that is when the attack occurred.

 

David DeVeaux Sr., said, “He came out and brought in the groceries that we were going to do for the barbecue today, and that was the last time I saw him.”

 

The Sun-Times‘ database of Chicago homicides shows 461 people were killed January 1, 2022, through September 5, 2022.

The FBI secretly provided forms to Americans between 2016 and 2019 to “voluntarily” relinquish their rights to own, buy or even use firearms, according to internal documents and communications.

The signed forms, which were unearthed by the firearms rights group Gun Owners of America (GOA), raise serious legal questions, lawyers say.

“We’re into a pre-crime, Minority Report type of world where the FBI believes it can take constitutional rights away from anyone it thinks possibly might pose a threat in the future,” said Robert Olson, outside counsel for GOA.

The FBI secretly pressured Americans into signing forms that relinquish their rights to own, purchase or even use firearms, according to a trove of internal documents and communications obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

 

The forms were presented by the FBI to people at their homes and in other undisclosed locations, according to bureau documents unearthed through the Freedom of Information Act by the firearm rights group Gun Owners of America (GOA) and shared with the DCNF. At least 15 people between 2016 and 2019 signed the secret forms, which ask signatories to declare themselves as either a “danger” to themselves or others or lacking “mental capacity adequately to contract or manage” their lives.

 

GOA and attorneys who specialize in Second Amendment law told the DCNF the existence of the forms raise serious legal questions.

 

“We’re into a pre-crime, Minority Report type of world where the FBI believes it can take constitutional rights away from anyone it thinks possibly might pose a threat in the future,” said Robert Olson, GOA’s outside counsel who specializes in firearms law. “Which certainly is not something you expect in the United States.”

 

The form specifies that signatories will be permanently registered with the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) — which the form states would legally bar signatories from being able to “purchase, to possess and to use any firearm.” It is unclear what exact criteria the FBI used to identify signatories, but some forms include bureau notes detailing ongoing investigations.

 

Many signatories allegedly made violent threats in online chat rooms, in person and on social media platforms, FBI notes show. The 15 signed forms obtained by the DCNF show FBI agents in Massachusetts, Michigan and Maine presented them to Americans — whose names were redacted by the bureau.

 

While the existence of the FBI form itself was first revealed in 2019 by the firearms blog Ammoland, the outlet did not provide evidence of it being used at the time. GOA obtained the signed forms as part of its lawsuit initiated in January 2020 against the bureau to compel disclosure of records related to the forms.

 

A spokesperson for the FBI told the DCNF the form was “discontinued” in December 2019, but they did not say why that decision was made.

 

“The NICS Indices Self-Submission form was created to provide an avenue for individuals to self-report to the NICS Section when individuals felt they were a danger to themselves or others,” the FBI spokesperson said.

 

‘That Is Terrifying To Me’

 

In order to get signatures, FBI agents in some cases interviewed people at their homes and elsewhere. While signing the form is supposed to be done “voluntarily,” lawyers told the DCNF there is a sense of undue pressure when Americans have to deal directly with FBI.

 

“A person is almost invariably at a disadvantage when dealing with armed federal agents,” said Olson.

In 2017, there was one case in which the FBI “was advised of a Facebook conversation” where a man allegedly “threatened to ‘shoot up’ a church,” according to bureau notes. The man denied making the threats in interviews at his home, telling the FBI “he did not want to kill anyone” and has “never possessed a firearm and has no desire to possess a firearm,” notes show.

 

Nevertheless, the man later filled out the form waiving his gun rights.

 

In 2018, FBI agents in Maine interviewed a high school student who “decided to look at online advice for hacking” on his school-assigned laptop, bureau notes show. Agents tried to access the student’s Facebook, but were “unable” to do so, according to the notes. However, the high school student eventually agreed to sign the self-submission form.

 

Another case involved a Massachusetts man who was arrested for vandalism in 2017 after “he broke several apartment windows” and allegedly told police, “I’m gonna kill all you white cops,” according to FBI notes. Three months later, he was interviewed at a redacted location by the FBI and was transported to a hospital after he “became agitated, began sweating profusely and complained of muscle pains.”

 

Once at the hospital, the man signed the self-submission form in the presence of a doctor and an FBI agent, according to bureau notes.

 

Reed Martz, a lawyer who runs a Second Amendment blog, told the DCNF “there is implicit pressure any time the FBI is asking you to sign a form.” There is naturally “an adversarial relationship” between everyday people and the FBI, he said.

 

“The FBI presented this to people,” said Martz. “That is terrifying to me. Think about that. The whole thing is chilling.”

 

It is unclear whether FBI agents threatened anyone with arrest if they didn’t sign.

 

Unanswered Legal Questions

 

Records do not show when the FBI form was created, who created it and whether or not it was distributed to federal agencies. However, the form was apparently “reviewed by legal counsel,” an FBI employee told a colleague in a November 2016 email obtained by the DCNF. At least 10 people had signed the forms by November 2016, the same FBI employee told their colleague.

 

Two days later, on that same email thread, one of the FBI employees said they “shared” the forms with “agencies who use these forms like Secret Service and Social Security.” The Secret Service declined the DCNF’s request for comment and the Social Security Administration did not respond.

 

Federal law requires government agencies to get public comment and approval from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) before collecting information from the public. Likewise, all official federal forms are supposed to be assigned a “control number,” experts told the DCNF.

 

However, the forms unearthed by GOA do not have a control number — a fact that underscores the FBI’s glaring lack of transparency — lawyers say.

 

“This is a form that’s designed for outside the office,” said Martz. “It raises my level of suspicion that it doesn’t have an official form number that you can look up and can download.”

The form also contains space for a “physician or mental health professional” to affirm the signatory “has adequate mental capacity to voluntarily execute this document,” which is a huge red flag, according to John Harris, alawyer who heads the Tennessee Firearms Association.

 

“I don’t see how a licensed physician could ever competently sign the declaration that the person has the mental capacity to voluntarily execute the agreement but lacks the ‘mental capacity adequately to contract or manage the details of my life.'” said Harris.

 

If the signatory does not have the “mental capacity” to own, buy or use firearms, they “could not possibly have the competence” to agree to sign a form waiving away their gun rights, said Martz.

 

There are also questions about the form’s compliance with the Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968. The GCA holds that someone may be barred from owning guns if they are “adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to a mental institution.”

 

However, the GCA makes no mention of people being able to declare themselves as mentally unfit to own firearms. Likewise, the forms do not indicate that courts ruled signatories as unfit to own firearms.

 

“By definition, the people targeted with these forms are those who are not otherwise ‘prohibited persons’ and have not committed any actual crime with which they can be charged,” said Olsen. “Otherwise, there would be no need to use the form.”

 

Harris noted the GCA does not necessarily render anyone with a “mental condition” a “prohibited person” to own firearms. Both those labels “require adjudication,” he said.

 

“The form seeks to deceive and mislead not only the individual, but perhaps even a medical provider to believe that a mental health issue is adequate to render someone a prohibited person under the statutory language, when the form itself lacks any information or disclosures that make it even remotely an accurate representation of the law,” Harris told the DCNF.

 

The FBI declined to identify any statutory justification for the forms, and OMB did not respond to a request for comment.

 

‘You Can’t Waive Constitutional Rights’

 

Those who signed the FBI forms could have standing to sue should the government ever prosecute them for trying to buy a gun, lawyers say.

 

“How would such unilateral waiver of a constitutionally protected right give rise to a basis for subsequent denial of that right and or form the basis for a valid criminal conviction?” Harris asked. “Could, in contrast, someone waive the right to vote or run for office and have that enforced?”

 

More fundamentally, the FBI forms call into question whether or not Americans can sign away their constitutional rights. Ken Cuccinelli, the former attorney general of Virginia, says you can’t.

 

“You can’t waive constitutional rights,” said Cuccinelli, now a senior fellow at the Center for Renewing America. “They’re natural rights.”

Beginning more than 50 years ago, and extending over the period from 1957 to 1978, according to official U.S. government records and studies, more than 300 kilograms of uranium 235 (U-235) in the form of highly enriched uranium (HEU) went missing from a nuclear fuel manufacturing plant in the small town of Apollo, Pennsylvania. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) concluded in 1966 that there was about a 200-kilogram deficit between the U-235 in the form of HEU supplied to the plant and the amount returned in products to customers. After the AEC and its Oak Ridge office calculated the processing losses based on NUMEC’s records, they determined that the fate of about 100 kilograms of U-235 in the form of HEU remained unexplained. NUMEC paid for the missing material, but later disputed the AEC calculations, maintaining that the unexplained 100 kgs could be attributed to other processing losses. After decommissioning of the Apollo plant, more than 330 kgs of U-235 in the form of HEU were unaccounted for, with most of that deficit occurring while NUMEC ran the plant.

 

For decades there have been allegations and suspicions that foreign agents, perhaps aided by American citizens, diverted a significant fraction of NUMEC’s unexplained uranium deficits to Israel for its nuclear-weapons program. Because of the high stakes involved, the affair has been clouded in denial and concealment for nearly a half century. The Washington Post goes back to the prior narrative surrounding the Mar-a-Lago documents saying, “a document describing a foreign government’s military defenses, including its nuclear capabilities was found by FBI agents who searched former president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and private club last month.”…. with Devlin Barrett adding the usual, “according to people familiar with the matter” sourcing.

Keeping in mind the traditional relationship that exists between specific media outlets and their deep state sources, the most obvious source for Devlin Barrett is the DOJ National Security Division (DOJ-NSD), FBI Counterintelligence division, or larger intelligence community (IC). However, what is also obvious from the way the documents are described is a narrative framework to make the innocuous seem looming.

I would be willing to bet the “document” in question is a letter from North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-Un to President Trump about the status of the DPRK military intent and weapons. You might remember Chairman Kim and President Trump developed a good relationship and exchanged letters related to matters of national security between North Korea and the United States.

The Intelligence Community in combination with the U.S. military industrial complex and Senate Foreign Relations Committee, did not like that level of direct diplomatic contact and discussion between President Trump and Chairman Kim. Direct communication between the two leaders subverted the IC’s ability to shape the DPRK messaging to support an interventionist and hostile U.S. geopolitical outlook.

The professional bureaucrats in charge of guiding and shaping all United States foreign engagements do not like being cut out of the geopolitical equations. As the former head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chuck Schumer famously said, “the intelligence community has six ways to Sunday to get back at you” if the President does not adhere and acquiesce to their power and authorities.

Chairman Kim and President Trump discussing how to get along is not in the interests of the people who run the U.S. government. Therefore, any documents or letters of correspondence that Kim and Trump may have exchanged are now “vital national security documents.”

Again, if you subtract the narrative engineering and read between the lines of the claims, that type of document exchange is almost certain to be what this is all about.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (KLAS) – A speeding woman is accused of driving under the influence of cocaine and alcohol when she crashed into another car, killing its driver who was under the influence of methamphetamine, police said.

 

Summer Butler, 37, faces charges of DUI resulting in death, reckless driving and being in possession of a controlled substance in connection with the fatal crash in January, court documents say.

 

On Jan. 14, North Las Vegas police reported a two-car crash near Cheyenne Avenue and Civic Center Drive. Police said a car was making a U-Turn in a center lane, causing the front of another car, which Butler was driving, to collide with it. The driver and the passenger in the first car were both ejected from the vehicle, police said.

 

Butler’s car traveled about 150 feet before it stopped in some landscaping, police said.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — At a modest hotel a few miles from the ocean here, most of the rooms have been occupied this summer by families from African countries seeking asylum — 192 adults and 119 children in all.

They are among the more than one million undocumented immigrants who have been allowed into the country temporarily after crossing the border during President Biden’s tenure, part of a record-breaking cascade of irregular migration around the world.

Distinct from the hundreds of thousands who have entered the country undetected during Mr. Biden’s term, many of the one million are hoping for asylum — a long shot — and will have to wait seven years on average before a decision on their case is reached because of the nation’s clogged immigration system.

The hotel in South Portland is among a handful in the region, in addition to Portland’s family shelter, that are offering temporary housing for hundreds of new immigrants. Maine is unusual in that it allows asylum seekers to receive financial support for rent and other expenses, in part through its General Assistance program. But the challenge has been steep; in May, officials in Portland announced that the city could no longer guarantee shelter for newly arrived asylum seekers because emergency housing was at capacity.

“The community is growing so big that the word is traveling that we are helping,” said Mike Guthrie, the director of Portland’s family shelter. “So more people are coming.”

 

Most of the families at the hotel in South Portland will be able to stay for a year, receiving assistance for housing, food, medical care and their immigration cases from case managers and volunteers. Portland has used state funds and federal emergency shelter dollars to help cover costs; fromJanuary 2021 through this June, the city spent $40 million on asylum seekers.

Officials describe it as both a humanitarian gesture and a down payment on the future of the state, which has the oldest and one of the whitest populations in the country and employers who are often desperate to fill jobs.

 

In May, the state pledged to build about 200 housing units for asylum seekers in the Portland area and provide rental assistance for two years,or until they receive authorization to work from the federal government, said Greg Payne, the governor’s senior adviser on housing policy. Asylum seekers are expected to start moving in this fall.

The longtime counselor to Chief Justice John Roberts announced on Sept. 6 that he is leaving his post at the end of the month.

Jeffrey P. Minear will retire as of Sept. 30 after serving as Roberts’ chief of staff since 2006. Minear previously worked for the U.S. solicitor general’s office, where he argued 56 cases before the Supreme Court. As chief justice, Roberts is head of the federal judiciary as well as presiding officer of the Supreme Court.

Minear’s successor has yet to be named.

Elizabeth Bailey, 36, was charged by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 1 with felony statutory rape of a person who is 15 years old or younger, felony indecent liberties with a minor and felony sexual activity with a student while she was a science teacher at Northview Academy (formerly Pressly School).

 

She was first given a $75,000 secured bond and placed on house arrest. She was told to stay away from the juvenile.

 

More charges were taken out a week later, including felony statutory rape of a child under 15 and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor after investigators received more information about her involvement with the student.

 

She was given an additional $50,000 bond.

 

By Sept. 9, Bailey was given an additional 27 counts. She received nine counts each of misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor, felony violation of a pre-trial release conditions and felony intimidating or interfering with a state witness.

 

Investigators say Bailey went to the juvenile’s home nine times since her arrest on Aug. 1.

 

She was given an $800,000 bond.

 

More charges may follow, according to deputies.

The Navy installed its first prototype SSL capable of countering surface craft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on a Navy ship in 2014. The Navy since then has been developing and installing additional SSL prototypes with improved capability for countering surface craft and UAVs. Higher-power SSLs being developed by the Navy are to have a capability for countering anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs). Current Navy efforts to develop SSLs include:

 

*the Solid State Laser Technology Maturation (SSL-TM) effort;

*the Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy (ODIN);

*the Surface Navy Laser Weapon System (SNLWS) Increment 1, also known as the high-energy laser with integrated optical dazzler and surveillance (HELIOS); and

 

*the High Energy Laser Counter-ASCM Program (HELCAP). The first three SSL efforts listed above are included in what the Navy calls the Navy Laser Family of Systems (NFLoS).

New York returns $19 mn of stolen art to Italy

 

Prosecutors in New York returned dozens of artifacts stolen from Italy and valued at roughly $19 million on Tuesday, including some discovered in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

 

"These 58 pieces represent thousands of years of rich history, yet traffickers throughout Italy utilized looters to steal these items and to line their own pockets," said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, noting that it was the third such repatriation in nine months.

 

"For far too long, they have sat in museums, homes, and galleries that had no rightful claim to their ownership," he said at a ceremony attended by Italian diplomats and law enforcement officials.

 

The stolen pieces were sold to Michael Steinhardt, one of the world's finest collectors of ancient art, according to the DA's office, who was also hit with a "first-of-its-kind lifetime ban on acquiring antiquities."

 

Among the recovered valuables, which were sold to "unwitting collectors and museums," officials said, were a marble head of the Greek goddess Athena from 200 B.C.E. and a drinking cup from 470 B.C.E.

 

The pieces were stolen at the behest of four men who "all led highly lucrative criminal enterprises – often in competition with one another – where they would use local looters to raid archaeological sites throughout Italy, many of which were insufficiently guarded," the DA's office said.

 

One of them, Pasquale Camera, was "a regional crime boss who organized thefts from museums and churches as early as the 1960s. He then began purchasing stolen artifacts from local looters and sold them to antiquities dealers," it added.

 

It said that this year alone, the DA's office has "returned nearly 300 antiquities valued at over $66 million to 12 countries."

BATAVIA, N.Y. — The crowd swayed on its feet, arms pumping, the beat of Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” thumping in their chests. The people under the revival tent hooted as Michael Flynn strode across the stage, bopping and laughing, singing the refrain into his microphone and encouraging the audience to sing along to the transgressive rock anthem.

 

“We’ll fight the powers that be just/Don’t pick our destiny ’cause/You don’t know us, you don’t belong!”

 

The emcee introduced him as “America’s General,” but to those in the audience, Flynn is far more than that: martyr, hero, leader, patriot, warrior.

 

The retired lieutenant general, former national security adviser, onetime anti-terrorism fighter, is now focused on his next task: building a movement centered on Christian nationalist ideas, where Christianity is at the center of American life and institutions.

 

Flynn brought his fight — a struggle he calls both spiritual and political — last month to a church in Batavia, New York, where thousands of people paid anywhere from a few dollars to up to $500 to hear and absorb his message that the United States is facing an existential threat, and that to save the nation, his supporters must act.

 

Flynn, 63, has used public appearances to energize voters, along with political endorsements to build alliances and a network of nonprofit groups — one of which has projected spending $50 million — to advance the movement, an investigation by The Associated Press and the PBS series FRONTLINE has found. He has drawn together election deniers, mask and vaccine opponents, insurrectionists, Proud Boys, and elected officials and leaders in state and local Republican parties. Along the way, the AP and FRONTLINE documented, Flynn and his companies have earned hundreds of thousands of dollars for his efforts.

 

The AP and FRONTLINE spoke with more than 60 people, including Flynn’s family, friends, opponents, and current and former colleagues, for this story. The news organizations also reviewed campaign finance records, corporate and charity filings, social media posts and similar open-source information, and attended several public events where Flynn appeared. Reporters examined dozens of Flynn’s speeches, interviews and public appearances. Flynn himself sat down for a rare on-camera interview with what he calls the mainstream media.

 

“I don’t even know why I’m talking to you, honestly,” Flynn said as the interview got underway.

 

Throughout 2021 and 2022, Flynn made more than 60 in-person speeches in 24 states, according to a count by the AP and FRONTLINE. When he speaks, the former top adviser to then-President Donald Trump spreads baseless conspiracy theories, stoking fear and fueling anger and division and grievance.

 

Flynn is “one of the most dangerous individuals in America today,” said Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a historian and expert on authoritarianism and fascism who wrote the book “Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present.”

 

“He is spearheading the attack on our democracy, which is coming from many quarters, and he is affiliated with many of these sectors, from the military to Christian nationalism to election denial to extremist groups,” she said. “All of this comes together to present a very live threat. And he’s at the center.”

 

Flynn has, with mixed success, supported like-minded candidates around the country, and has said his immediate goal is to influence this year’s elections. In Sarasota, Florida, where he lives, he has worked in concert with members of the extremist group the Proud Boys to influence local politics. Their favored candidates in August won control of the county school board.

 

“Local action has a national impact” is his mantra.

 

“We need to take this country back one town at a time, one county at a time, one state at a time, if that’s what it takes,” he told a crowd in Salt Lake City.

EU unions: Low-income Europeans cannot afford energy bills

 

A study conducted for the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has found that increasing electricity and gas bills are becoming unaffordable for low-paid Europeans, costing them more than a month's wages for low-paid workers in the majority of EU member states, with more energy prices hikes to be witnessed likely in coming months unless government action is taken.

 

According to the study, an estimated 9.5 million employed people had difficulties paying their energy bills before the energy crisis began. The cost of gas and electricity had risen by 38% across Europe in comparison with last year, and it continues to soar.

 

The number of days a person earning the minimum wage has to work to pay their energy bill has risen dramatically in some countries, such as Estonia (+26), Netherlands (+20), Czechia (+17), and Latvia (+16).

 

That means Estonian workers earning the minimum wage have to work an additional 26 days to pay for their annual energy bill.

 

"When your bill costs over a month's wages, there's no clever money-saving trick that will make a difference," ETUC Deputy General Secretary Esther Lynch said in a statement, adding, "These prices are now simply unaffordable for millions of people."

 

ETUC urged European leaders "to take decisive action to end Europe's unsustainable energy price rises" ahead of their meeting next week. It called on EU leaders to install price caps on energy bills for consumers and make targeted payments to low-wage workers struggling with energy bills.

 

The group also called for other anti-crisis measures to protect incomes and jobs, as well as increases to minimum wages, and urged EU countries to support collective bargaining so other workers may obtain wage hikes. It also called on European nations to tax windfall profits made by energy companies.

 

In response to the war in Ukraine, Western countries have rolled out a comprehensive sanctions campaign aimed, in particular, at Russian energy resources.

 

Groceries and food are other sectors experiencing the aftermath of soaring inflation which saw prices skyrocketing across the EU.

 

The temporary halt of gas flows in the Nord Stream pipeline has been frequent since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in February.

 

In the UK, it was reported that 60% of factories are at extreme risk of shutting down as energy costs across the country continue to skyrocket, with electricity bills surging by more than 100% over the past year.

 

In Germany, inflation rose to almost 8% in August after declining slightly in the months of June and July. It is predicted that millions of German lower-income households will find it hard to pay their energy bills due to gas prices.

 

In France, supplies of Russian gas have been halted since last week due to non-payment for July in full.

 

Since the G7 agreed on imposing a price cap on Russian oil on September 2, the flow of gas has completely stopped, although Gazprom has reported that this was a temporary maintenance issue.

 

Russia has indeed stated that it will stop exporting Russian oil to European states that are applying the decision.

 

As a result, experts have said that the gas situation is likely to worsen in the EU.

Flynn’s advocacy of falsehoods and conspiracy theories hardly makes him unique in a fact-challenged America, but his pedigree, military career and high-powered Washington contacts set him apart. He’s retired a three-star general who less than two decades ago developed wartime strategies for countering insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan.

 

His selection as Trump’s first national security adviser made him the ultimate insider, giving him nominal control — if only for a matter of weeks — of the administration’s national security strategy. When he later found himself in legal trouble on suspicion that he had lied to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States, he cooperated with the same government establishment he now crusades against.

 

In the weeks after the November 2020 presidential election, Flynn picked up a presidential pardon — granted to forgive his guilty plea to lying to the FBI. He immediately became a chief promoter of the “Stop the Steal” effort and championed bogus claims about foreign interference and ballot tampering that weren’t supported by credible evidence. But for some voters, Flynn’s status as a retired general and top intelligence officer gave weight to the empty theories.

 

He falsely said Trump won, called the election outcome part of “a coup in progress,” suggested Trump should seize voting machines and said Trump could order up the military in some states and rerun the election. In December 2020 he even made his way into the Oval Office to push his ideas directly to Trump.

 

Called before a congressional committee investigating the Capitol insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021, Flynn refused to say whether he believed the violence was justified or even whether he believed in the peaceful transition of power. He invoked his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself.

 

Retired Brig. Gen. Steven M. Anderson, who served with Flynn in Iraq, called Flynn’s ideas antithetical to core values of the American military and the nation itself.

 

Anderson worries that Flynn is “a role model for thousands and thousands and thousands of soldiers and former soldiers,” and that his ideas can empower them to take actions that hurt the country.

 

“We’ve got a retired three-star, former NSA, who says we can overthrow the election, use our military,” Anderson said. The thinking goes, he said, “Well, then yes, sign me up for the Proud Boys.”

 

Flynn uses the three stars he earned in the military as his symbol, a shorthand that reminds people he came from the highest levels of the nation’s power structure — and that suggests he has a special knowledge of how things work in the shadowy world of Washington and global affairs.

 

“It’s a crying shame that essentially he has evolved into the person he is now,” said Anderson, who described his former colleague as a “subservient buffoon that unfortunately has forsaken his oath of office.”

 

Doug Wise, a former CIA and military officer who knew Flynn for decades and briefly served as Flynn’s deputy at the Defense Intelligence Agency, said even in the military, Flynn often pushed the envelope of what was permissible and demonstrated “extreme thinking.” He believes Flynn hasn’t transformed, he’s just become more comfortable acting on the anger that burns inside him.

 

“I understand the reasons why he gravitated to the right wing because as his behavior and beliefs became more bizarre, I think they were very welcoming. Because who wouldn’t want a highly respected Army three-star to join your group?” Wise said.

 

“I think he believed, post-government, and he was right in this … that he was too well-connected to fail,” Wise said. “And he got pardoned.”

 

Flynn sees conspiracies in just about every corner of American life.

 

He’s repeated falsehoods about Black Lives Matter and said that so-called globalists created COVID-19. He tells the tens of thousands of people who have paid to see him speak that there are 75 members of the Socialist Party in Congress, and has said the left and Democrats are trying to destroy the country. He asserts, above all else, that the United States was founded on Judeo-Christian values. The bedrock, he warns, is crumbling.

 

The country, Flynn often says in speeches and interviews, is in the midst of a “spiritual war,” and he goes after many of the institutions and ideas that stand as pillars of American democracy.

He has told audiences he doesn’t trust the U.S. government or government institutions that oversee the rule of law. He called the media “the No. 1 enemy” and said it has done a “horrible, horrible disservice to the country by just constantly lying and trying to deceive us.” He says elementary schools are teaching “filth” and “pornography.” He continues to assert, ignoring all evidence to the contrary, that elections can’t be trusted. He says, over and over, that some of his fellow Americans are “evil.”

 

“They dress like us and they talk like us, but they don’t think and act like us,” he told a podcaster recently. “And they definitely do not want what it is that we want.”

 

Heavy Armaments

 

Survey data shows many Americans believe what Flynn says — that the 2020 election was stolen — and have bought into COVID-19 misinformation and other conspiracy theories that he spreads, said Kristin Kobes Du Mez, a professor of history at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, who studies the evangelical movement.

 

“Any of these factors alone could be considered dangerous. But all of them together and the distrust it is sowing in our democracy,” Du Mez said. “I think it’s extremely dangerous in this moment.”

 

She points to Flynn’s role as headliner of a multicity roadshow known as the ReAwaken America tour, an event that is a potent mix of politics, religion and commerce that has become a prime example of the Christian nationalist movement.

 

Flynn helped found the tour in 2021 with Clay Clark, an entrepreneur from Oklahoma who had been running business conferences before the pandemic. In his interview with the AP and FRONTLINE in February, Flynn said he considered himself a “senior leader” of the team that’s running it.

 

The thread of Christian nationalism runs through many of Flynn’s events. At one fundraiser, a preacher prayed over him saying that America would stay a Christian nation and that Flynn was “heavy armaments” in the Lord’s quiver. At the Christian Patriot’s Rally at a church in Northern California, Flynn was presented with an assault-style rifle on stage. In Virginia in July, he said pastors “need to be talking about the Constitution from the pulpit as much as the Bible.” In Texas last November, Flynn told a crowd “this is a moment in time where this is good versus evil.”

 

“If we are going to have one nation under God, which we must, we have to have one religion. One nation under God, and one religion under God, right?” he said.

 

Christian nationalism seeks to merge the identity of Christians and Americans, so that to be a “true” American is to be Christian — and a certain type of Christian. The ideology pushes the idea that the United States was founded on biblical principles and has a favored relationship with a Christian God, said Samuel Perry, a sociologist at the University of Oklahoma who studies conservative Christianity and politics.

 

It is distinct from the practice of Christianity, and Perry’s research has found that many Americans who are inclined toward Christian nationalism don’t go to church.

 

“This has nothing to do with Christian orthodoxy. It has nothing to do with loving Jesus or wanting to be a good disciple or loving your neighbor or self-sacrifice or anything like that,” Perry said. “It has everything to do with Christian ethno-culture and specifically white Christian ethno-culture.”

 

Flynn casts himself as a victim of “the deep state” who paid a steep price for supporting Trump. Besides Trump, his supporters say, no one has been persecuted more than Flynn.

 

Flynn’s rhetoric — us versus them, good versus evil, the idea that God is on “our” side — has been a staple among conservative Christians for decades, and is mainstream in conservative evangelicalism, Du Mez said.

 

The thinking, she said, can fuel violence.

 

“They’re out to get us. Therefore, we need to strike first. And the threat is always dire,” Du Mez says the thinking goes. “And if the threat is dire, then the ends justify the means.”

 

“These values are not unconnected from the violence that we saw on Jan. 6,” she added.

France to send nuclear fuel to Japan

 

A shipment of reprocessed nuclear fuel docked in the early hours of Wednesday at the port city of Cherbourg in France, AFP reported, saying that the ship was bound for Japan to be used in a nuclear power plant.

 

Japan does not possess facilities that allow it to process its own nuclear waste, sending most of it overseas - France in particular.

 

The nuclear shipment, composed of highly radioactive Mox, a concoction of reprocessed plutonium and uranium, was transported overnight from a nuclear power plant in the Hague in secure containers mounted on two trucks, the Paris-based nuclear group Orano said.

 

The convoy arrived around 3:45 am local time at the port surrounded by law enforcement vehicles, the French agency added, citing a photographer at the location.

 

The load was transported a few hours later to a nuclear-ready ship designed by the UK's PNTL company, which has extensive experience with transporting this type of materials, Orano explained.

 

The ship will take around two months to dock at its destination in Japan, marking the eighth shipment of the sort from France since 1999.

 

The last time France sent out a ship bound for Japan and loaded with Mox was in September 2021, prompting environmental group Greenpeace to protest the transaction.

 

"Transporting such dangerous materials from a nuclear proliferation point of view is completely irresponsible," said Yannick Rousselet of Greenpeace France about Wednesday's shipment.

 

The concoction in question, Mox, is composed of 92% uranium oxide and 8% plutonium oxide, Orano said. "The plutonium is not the same as that used by the military," the company claimed.

 

Nuclear power is becoming more popular as countries look for alternatives with the cost of importing energy growing globally and climate crises causing devastation.

 

The Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011—the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986—led to a drop in nuclear power investment as governments ran terrified and safety concerns grew. However, the tide is now shifting back in favor of nuclear power after Moscow's operation in Ukraine, the ensuing squeeze on energy supplies, and Europe's push to wean itself off of Russian oil and gas.

 

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida two weeks ago called for an initiative to restart the nation's nuclear power sector.

 

Kishida, at an energy policy meeting, said the war in Ukraine "has vastly transformed the world's energy landscape" and so "Japan needs to bear in mind potential crisis scenarios."

 

10 of Japan's 33 nuclear reactors are back in service 11 years after the nuclear disaster, albeit not all of them are, and the nation is still highly reliant on imported fossil fuels.

 

The restart of seven more reactors has received preliminary approval from the national nuclear safety watchdog, although local populations frequently oppose such actions.

Last October, Flynn was the star attraction at the WeCANAct Liberty Conference, a gathering in Salt Lake City for Utah’s Platform Republicans PAC.

 

The program included dozens of speakers and exhibitors talking about a grab bag of ideas and causes that have seized and panicked the right — about vaccines, human trafficking, elections and the QAnon conspiracy theory.

 

Among the sponsors and exhibitors were the John Birch Society; businesses selling everything from texting services for political campaigns to food dehydrators; Ammon Bundy’s anti-government People’s Rights group; and America’s Frontline Doctors, which has spread false information about COVID-19 and promoted unproven treatments such as ivermectin, a drug used to treat parasitic infections. State lawmakers from Arizona and Utah spoke, and members of the Utah Republican Party’s governing committee were among the organizers.

 

The program kicked off with an invocation by a preacher who brought the crowd to its feet as he described a “prophecy” of a “Great Awakening” where “Americans are going to rise up and defeat the cabal.”

 

“We are in a spiritual war, and you can’t win a war without attacking,” he said.

 

The preacher ended by leading the crowd in what he called a “new version of the Lord’s Prayer that fits the Great Awakening.” The crowd repeated after him as he said: “Deliver us from the cabal, and from Satan’s influence. For yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory. Forever and ever and ever. Amen.”

 

Flynn appeared a few times throughout the day, at one point sitting in the audience. Across the Salt Palace Convention Center, people jostled their seatmates to point him out and craned their necks to see him.

 

That evening, he gave a meandering speech that he referred to as “an ass-chewing from a general.” He falsely declared once again that Trump had won the 2020 election, said “our government is corrupt,” and called for the FBI to be abolished, a surprising applause line in October 2021 that has now being taken up more broadly by some Republicans.

 

He called the left “our enemies” and said they are “godless” and “soulless.”

 

One of Flynn’s companies, Resilient Patriot LLC, was paid $58,000 by the conference. An AP and FRONTLINE review of state and federal campaign finance filings documented nearly $300,000 in payments to Flynn and his businesses from candidates and political action committees since 2021, for things such as speaking fees, travel, book sales and campaign consulting. (Florida congressional candidate Laura Loomer reported paying his company $1,100 in May for public relations services.)

 

After Flynn’s keynote concluded, a podcaster helping to wrap things up for the evening came onstage and called him “one of the new founding fathers of this republic.”

 

99 Endorsements

 

As Flynn speaks and stumps to persuade people to join his movement, he has also been busy building a network of political candidates at the federal, state and local levels.

 

The AP and FRONTLINE found that Flynn has endorsed 99 candidates for the 2022 election cycle. (He subsequently withdrew a handful.)

 

The country’s most influential Republican is paying attention. Flynn’s brother Joseph told an interviewer in May that during a visit the Flynns made to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate this spring, Trump himself produced a list comparing the success of his endorsed candidates with Flynn’s.

 

At least 80% of Flynn’s chosen candidates have publicly spread lies or sown doubt about Trump’s 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden, or even participated in efforts to overthrow the election, the AP and FRONTLINE found. Several have suggested they would use their power if elected to change the way elections are run and how people are allowed to cast their vote.

 

About two dozen were at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 5-6, 2021.

 

One-third have served in the military.

 

At least 38 have used Christian nationalist rhetoric. Keith Self, a congressional candidate in Texas, has said he’s running for Congress “to defend the Judeo-Christian foundations of this nation.” Christine Villaverde, a congressional candidate in North Carolina, has vowed to fight to keep America “a Christian nation.” Anthony Sabatini, a Florida state lawmaker who just lost a bid for Congress, recently posted on Facebook, “Only when Christians stand up & get loud, will we take this country back.”

After Second Failed Launch, NASA Decides To Scrap Artemis Program And Just Fake Another Moon Landing

 

CAPE CANAVERAL, FL – After yet another delay, NASA is halting immediate plans to pursue an Artemis I launch and will scrap the program altogether and fake another moon landing instead.

Future launch periods began to look uncertain, so the team decided that faking another moon landing is superior to continuing to plan and then postpone launches.

"This is just cheaper," said Jim Free, associate administrator for NASA's vaunted Exploration Systems division. "No one will be able to tell the difference anyway. The tech has gotten much better since the last time we faked a moon landing. It's not even close."

Free said the new plan will give his team a much-needed break. "With CGI and other technological leaps we've made since 1969, we basically don't have to do anything. This is much easier, and I've been saying we should do it this way for months."

NASA administrator Bill Nelson added that the team has gotten lots of practice at faking things ever since Biden came into office. "Those speeches where he sounds coherent and not senile?" said Nelson. "One thousand percent us. And let me tell you, those are a lot harder to fake than any moon landing. This is off the record, right?"

The fake landing is scheduled for November 14th in Burbank, California.

To clarify, they are unable to verify the location of 1,160 kilograms out of 17,500 kilograms of U.S. enriched uranium has sent overseas since January 1993.

 

That follows a 1992 congressional mandate issued after the NRC and DOE could not fully account for the location and disposition of U.S. enriched uranium overseas at that time.

 

To point out the gravity of the situation, that is enough weapons grade nuclear material to wipe hundreds of major cities around the globe completely off the map.

Flynn’s support can be a sought-after prize. An AP and FRONTLINE analysis of Facebook and Instagram ad data found ads from more than 20 candidates promoting their endorsements. Jackson Lahmeyer, an Oklahoma pastor who was defeated in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate by Sen. Another Flynn endorsee, Dan Cox, who also organized buses for Jan. 6, won the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Maryland.

 

Still, Flynn’s endorsement doesn’t guarantee a win. Josh Mandel, the Ohio U.S. Senate candidate, was defeated by JD Vance, who got a late endorsement from Trump. Some Flynn-backed candidates, including gubernatorial candidate Joey Gilbert in Nevada and Colorado secretary of state candidate Tina Peters, made baseless claims of election fraud after they lost.

 

Flynn and his allies have suggested he wants to get back into government, and the growing influence that flows from the network he’s building may help him get there, said Ron Filipkowski, a lawyer in Sarasota and longtime Republican activist who now tracks Flynn and other far-right figures online.

 

“He’s going to build this grassroots movement, local elected officials beholden to him, loyal to him,” Filipkowski said.

 

Financing Election Denial

 

Flynn has expanded his influence further through well-financed groups that advocate, among other things, changes to the way elections are run, based on the false premise that there is widespread voting fraud.

 

Flynn and Patrick Byrne, founder of Overstock.com, last year launched The America Project, with Flynn’s brother Joseph as president. The group said it planned to spend $50 million in the 2021 budget year, according to a filing with North Carolina charity regulators. But Joseph Flynn and Byrne separately told AP that it had spent tens of millions less, though each gave different totals.

 

While Flynn himself is not listed among its officers, he is the face of the group, and it’s described as “General Flynn and Patrick Byrne’s America Project.” Byrne says Flynn is his closest adviser, telling the AP and FRONTLINE that Flynn is his “Yoda” and “rabbi.”

 

In April 2021, Flynn was named chairman of America’s Future, one of the country’s oldest conservative nonprofit groups. The organization was founded in 1946 and was previously led by ultra-conservative stalwarts, including Phyllis Schlafly and retired Maj. Gen. John Singlaub. Since Flynn took over, the group hired his sister, Mary O’Neill, as executive director and appointed Joseph Flynn to its board of directors. The group had about $3 million in assets at the end of 2020, its most recent IRS filings show. Flynn told the AP and FRONTLINE in February that he had raised an estimated $1.7 million for America’s Future since becoming chairman.

 

The two groups worked in close coordination last year, together donating more than $4.2 million for a widely criticized and misinformation-driven review of the 2020 presidential election results commissioned by Arizona Republicans.

 

The America Project has given about $5 million to “grassroots organizations” around the country, Joseph Flynn said in a July appearance on an online show.

One day prior to Apple’s September event, Huawei announced the Mate 50 series, beating Apple's iPhone 14 to a feature it is anticipated to offer: the ability to send texts via satellite communication.

 

The Mate 50 and its Pro series will have the ability to send short texts and utilize navigation thanks to China’s global BeiDou satellite network, permitting communication in areas without cellular signals.

 

The frontrunner Mate 50 series includes 4G-only versions of the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset with 8GB of RAM, a 6.7-inch and a 90Hz OLED panel as opposed to the 50 Pro having a slightly bigger 6.74-inch OLED display and a 120Hz refresh rate.

 

Both however include a 50-megapixel main rear camera with a variable aperture lens with stops from f/1.4 to f/4 - most smartphone cameras use fixed apertures but the lens itself is so small that it’s unlikely to notice any significant difference in depth-of-field in most situations.

 

While each has a telephoto lens, and they share a 13-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide, the Pro gets an upgraded 64-megapixel camera capable of 200x digital zoom. On the other hand, the Mate 50 offers 100x digital zoom with a lower-resolution 12-megapixel sensor.

 

American cellular provider T-Mobile announced a collaboration with SpaceX that intends to bring the satellite texting feature to T-Mobile subscribers by way of Starlink satellites, as the rumors of Apple’s satellite messaging feature have been swirling since last year.

 

At first, however, the technology will potentially be limited. T-Mobile stated that its system will allow for text and even picture messaging, but voice calls and data won’t be available until later.

 

According to Huawei’s description of the system, it looks like the Mate 50 phones will only be able to send texts by satellite, but receiving them won't be an option yet. Satellite-based texting aims to provide an emergency connection in places without a signal for urgent cases. In any case, consumers and smartphone users will have to wait for the feature to be available in the US longer than usual since Huawei’s devices will not be sold there due to sanctions.

 

US President Joe Biden signed a legislation, dubbed the Secure Equipment Act, in October last year that bans companies that are regarded as "security threats" from obtaining equipment licenses from US regulators. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), under the new law, is required to no longer review nor accept any authorization application for equipment that "poses a threat to national security" - namely by Huawei and ZTE.

 

Following that initiative, Huawei's market share in phones plummeted even in China, but with this new tech feature that will not be available in the US, Huawei might gain leverage over US smartphone markets - especially since the company just signed a deal with the Solomon Islands last month that secured a $66 million loan from China to fund and provide 161 telecommunications towers across the Pacific nation.

“I think every single person in this country, every American citizen, now has to pay attention to politics. You know, when people go, ‘I don’t get involved. I don’t do that political stuff. That’s for the politicians.’ Well, that’s exactly why we are here. OK?” Flynn told the AP and FRONTLINE during a contentious interview. “So, it’s something else that you won’t write or speak about or it’ll be edited out.”

 

As part of Operation Eagles Wings, The America Project has created affiliate groups in at least nine states. Its Florida affiliate said in a Facebook post last month it’s seeking “America First Poll Watchers” and will train organizations for free. State affiliates in Illinois and Virginia advertised trainings in July and August on grassroots social activism, poll watching and how to get out the vote. The promotions also promise to teach attendees to “expose weaknesses,” “monitor and evaluate absentee voting” and conduct “investigative canvassing.”

 

The initiative has raised alarm bells with pro-democracy advocates.

 

“If people who tried to overturn the 2020 election, or who are fueled by election conspiracies, are trying to recruit their followers or allies to be election workers or volunteers as part of an election denial agenda, that poses real risks to fair and free elections,” said Jacek Pruski, of the nonpartisan group Protect Democracy.

Therese Coffey acknowledged her appointment may put off people concerned about her lifestyle choices

 

Therese Coffey conceded that there was some validity in criticisms of her appointment as Britain’s new secretary of state for health and social care. She is known for having some unhealthy habits in her personal life.

 

The issue came up on Wednesday in an interview with the radio station LBC. Host Nick Ferrari quizzed the new secretary about her well-documented fondness for cigars and alcohol and suggested jokingly that both of them “could do with losing a pound or two.”

 

“My focus is on how we deliver for patients. And I appreciate I may not be the role model,”Coffey said, adding that “Chief Medical Officer [Chris Whitty] and others, I am sure, will continue being role models in that regard.”

 

“I’ve been a patient in the [National Health Services] too. I’ve had some brilliant experiences and I’ve had some experiences that could have been better,” she continued on a more serious note. Improving the healthcare system will be the focus of her work in the cabinet of Prime Minister Liz Truss, she pledged.

 

 

Lifestyle choices and body mass index are not the only things about Coffey that some critics objected to after her new role was revealed to the public on Tuesday. The British Pregnancy Advisory Service said it found “deeply concerning” her voting record on abortion issues.

 

A devout Catholic, Coffey has voted according to her faith on issues such as abortion and gay rights in the British parliament, where she has represented her constituency of Suffolk Coastal since 2010.

We recently stumbled upon an interesting article by Jesus Diaz on Gizmodo regarding Eastman Kodak Co.

 

"Kodak may be going under, but apparently they could have started their own nuclear war if they wanted, just six years ago." writes Diaz. The information was recently leaked by a former Kodak employee that down in the basement of the company's Rochester, NY headquarters, there was a nuclear reactor loaded with 3.5 pounds of enriched uranium which is found in atomic warheads.

 

The main question is: Why? A last secret weapon for Kodak to use against Fuji? No, Diaz writes, "Kodak's purpose for the reactor wasn't sinister: they used it to check materials for impurities as well as neutron radiography testing. The reactor, a Californium Neutron Flux multiplier (CFX) was acquired in 1974 and loaded with three and a half pounds of enriched uranium plates placed around a californium-252 core."

 

Another perhaps more important question is: How? "How did they get permission to own it, let alone install it in a basement in the middle of a densely populated city?" asks Diaz. "Kodak officials now admit that they never made any public announcement about it. In fact, nobody in the city—officials, police or firemen—or in the state of New York or anywhere else knew about it until it was recently leaked."

 

"Its existence and whereabouts were purposely kept vague and only a few engineers and Federal employees really knew about the project" writes Diaz. "The reactor was installed in a closely guarded, two-foot-thick concrete walled underground bunker."

 

"While 3.5 pounds of weapons-grade uranium is not enough to create a nuclear bomb, illegal arm merchants are seeking small amounts like this to put them for sale in the black market—which is why the United States has such a tight control on this material. The government doesn't want Iran or al-Qaeda getting their hands all over the atomic candy for obvious reasons." adds Diaz.

Ex-Pentagon chiefs warns of civil interference in military operations

 

Former US Defense chiefs published an open letter on Tuesday on the War On The Rocks website which details how political divisions in US politics are exerting pressure on the military personnel while stressing that relations between civilians and the military could further deteriorate in the future.

 

In order to prevent this, eight former defense secretaries and five ex-joint chiefs chairmen signed a statement on 16 "Best Practices of Civil-Military Relations."

 

"We are in an exceptionally challenging civil-military environment," they wrote.

 

"Politically, military professionals confront an extremely adverse environment characterized by the divisiveness of affective polarization that culminated in the first election in over a century when the peaceful transfer of political power was disrupted and in doubt," they said.

 

"Looking ahead, all of these factors could well get worse before they get better."

 

The statement did not cite any examples to illustrate civil-military tensions. Yet, it appears to be referring to the challenges faced by the 2020 election results by Trump and his supporters that led to the January 6, 2021 assault on the US Capitol. As per the statement:

 

"Politically, military professionals confront an extremely adverse environment characterized by the divisiveness of affective polarization that culminated in the first election in over a century when the peaceful transfer of political power was disrupted and in doubt. Looking ahead, all of these factors could well get worse before they get better."

 

The Pentagon has been accused of stalling the deployment of National Guard troops to confront the US Capitol attackers.

 

The Pentagon was chastised for its slow response during the January 6 attack on Congress by supporters of then-President Donald Trump, which resulted in five deaths and dozens of injuries.

 

Due to a slew of bureaucratic requirements, it took military officials more than three hours to deploy the National Guard to Congress as it was besieged by rioters.

 

On December 31, 2021, the Pentagon announced that it would streamline the process for approving the use of National Guard forces in Washington, nearly a year after the deadly attack on the US Capitol.

 

According to the Pentagon, the Secretary of Defense will now be "the single approval authority for all requests" for emergency use of District of Columbia National Guard personnel inside Washington.

 

Also during the Trump years, military personnel were asked to help in a number of non-traditional activities, including building a border wall and guarding the border against undocumented migrants, and helping police cities hit by violent protests.

 

In one incident, Trump had then-defense secretary Mark Esper and General Mark Milley, who is still the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, walk alongside him in front of the White House after police cleared the street of people protesting the murder of a Black man, George Floyd, by police.

 

Both later expressed regrets they took part in what was widely labelled a political "photo op" for the president.

 

Under President Joe Biden, the military has been forced to undertake a haphazard and deadly withdrawal from Afghanistan that senior Pentagon leaders did not agree with.

 

And Biden was widely criticized last week for giving a deeply political speech attacking Trump's supporters while two Marine guards stood behind him.

 

The officials stressed that the military leadership must accept orders even when they disagree with them, but said the orders must be legal.

 

"Regardless of the process, it is the responsibility of senior military and civilian leaders to ensure that any order they receive from the president is legal."

 

The statement was signed by defense chiefs under both Democratic and Republican administrations, including Robert Gates, Leon Panetta, Mark Espe,r and James Mattis. The latter two served under Trump and were both fired after they clashed with the president.

Biden willing to meet Xi if he attends G20 meeting in Bali

 

US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday said he was "sure" he'd meet Xi Jinping in November if the latter will attend a G20 meeting planned in Indonesia's resort island of Bali.

 

"If he's there I'm sure I'll see him," Biden told reporters at the White House.

 

Since becoming president in January 2021, Biden has not met with the Chinese leader, limiting contact between the two superpowers leaders to a series of phone and video calls.

 

Tensions have been mounting between the world's two biggest economies since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island of Taiwan in early August.

 

China condemned Pelosi's trip, which it regarded as a gesture of support for separatism, and launched large-scale military exercises in the vicinity of the island.

 

The US has recently approved $1.1 billion for a potential arms deal with Taiwan which Taipei intends to use to increase its security budget.

 

Earlier today, China issued a call for the US to annul its $1.1 billion arms deal with Taiwan and to cease all military contacts with the country.

 

China has also criticized the NATO alliance, to which the US is it's de facto dictator, over its criticism of the Russian-Chinese partnership in the Arctic.

 

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said that it showed the Alliance's efforts to perpetuate the Cold War mentality and that it should immediately abandon "dangerous thinking", causing confusion in the world.

 

It is peculiar for Biden to express eagerness in meeting with Xi. China's strong relations with Russia have recently led to the paying for Russian gas in rubles and yuan rather than US dollars, as Moscow seeks stronger ties with Beijing in the aftermath of Western sanctions over Ukraine.

 

This obviously poses a challenge to the financial hegemony of the US dollar, which is the most widely used currency in international transactions - a challenge to its use as the standard currency in the commodity market as well as its direct impact on commodity prices.

 

In August, President Joko Widodo of Indonesia told Bloomberg that both Xi and Russia's President Vladimir Putin would be at the Group of 20 summit, also setting up the possibility of the first Biden-Putin encounter since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in February this year.

 

As for the White House, it has yet to confirm details of Biden's travel plans.

Russian economy back on track – Putin

 

The country has managed to overcome sanctions, according to the president

The economic situation in Russia has stabilized, President Putin said at a plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) on Wednesday.

 

“I would like to note that we believe, both in the government and in the presidential administration, our experts believe that the peak, the most difficult period [for the country's economy], has passed. The situation is normalizing, and macroeconomic indicators speak of this,” Putin said.

 

The president indicated that this year’s budget will be in surplus, explaining: “Our state finances have stabilized, I want to note that this year's budget will be drawn up with asurplus of almost half a trillion rubles, somewhere under 485 billion rubles (almost $8 billion), despite all the gloomy forecasts.”

 

According to the Russian president, annual inflation in the country is on a downward trend. “I think that according to the results for the year, we will have [inflation] somewhere around 12%, and according to many of our experts, in the first quarter or by the second quarter of next year, we will most likely reach the target indicators - 5% or 6%, and some even project that the level of 4% may be in reach,” Putin said.

 

The government will do everything to support prices and suppress inflation, the Russian president stressed. Putin pointed out that the ruble and financial markets have also stabilized, while the unemployment rate has reached a historic low of less than 4%.

So, i was reading this book from Jacques Vallee, Passport to Magonia.

It is full with eye wittness accounts and stories from the folklore. Even things related to christanity and alike.

Vallee's gives all those stories a lot of room but never comes to the point he tries to make, i understand that the topic is way too big to make a simple statemant about this, at some point it feels like too big for a human mind. One can only take so much from it. I am also sure, that different people will note different things in all those stories written down in this book.

Former US President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate has proven to be an absolute treasure trove of critical documents, and reports saying the FBI raid on the home was with the aim of finding classified nuclear documents have proven to be true.

 

FBI agents that conducted the Mar-a-Lago search found a document detailing a foreign nation's military defenses, which include its nuclear capabilities, the Washington Post reported, saying this raised concern about the classified materials Trump has been keeping in his possession for all this time.

 

Several documents seized by the FBI contained information about top-secret US operations that only a handful of officials know about them. The FBI seized 11 boxes worth of papers, including data deemed to be so secret that they could not be stated individually in the "receipt" of what was taken. Only the president, handpicked members of his Cabinet, or near-Cabinet-level officials are able to reveal the information about the top-secret documents to other government officials, people familiar with the matter told WP.

 

The documents in question are of such secret nature that they require special clearances, not just a top-secret clearance. These types of documents are also so secret that only a handful of government personnel are authorized to know about them, with records relating to them being kept under lock and key.

 

In addition to the 150 documents recovered by the National Archives in January and the documents given to the DoJ in June by Trump aides, the documents recovered in the Mar-a-Lago raid raised a total of more than 300 classified documents recovered by Washington, the New York Times reported previously.

 

Trump and the National Archives have been at each other's throats since the former left office in 2021 after the agency found that he was in possession of White House documents that he should have turned over to the government upon the end of his term.

 

It was only in the latest batch of documents seized from Trump that there was information regarding a foreign country's nuclear and military capabilities, and people familiar with the issue did not reveal which country was in question nor give out any additional details about the Department of Justice's investigation into the matter.

 

The dramatic FBI raid on Donald Trump's palatial Florida residence has supercharged the bitter, polarizing political debate around the slew of judicial investigations facing the former President as he considers another White House run.

 

The raid led to Trump facing a criminal investigation over potential violations of the Espionage Act and additional statutes relating to obstruction of justice, as well as the destruction of federal government records, according to the search warrant executed by FBI agents at the former President's home.

 

Trump is in such hot water that he announced that he was taking the US government to court over the FBI's raid in a bid to stop the federal agency from delving into the material seized from him until a special court official can be appointed to review the documents in question.

 

The violation of the Espionage Act has a possible punishment of 10 years in federal prison, the statute for obstruction carries a maximum sentence of 20 years, and the statute for the destruction of records carries a potential lifetime ban on holding public office.
