At Queen Elizabeth II's Funeral, a Surprise Spider Steals the Spotlight

Royals from around the world attended Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral on Monday, as did actress Sandra Oh and TV host Bear Grylls. But one surprise attendee was neither invited nor famous: A small spider was spotted crawling across the queen's coffin, and naturally, social media took it to heart.

The spider picked a prominent spot to show up. It was seen crawling across a note from the queen's eldest son, King Charles III, that reads "in loving and devoted memory. Charles R." ("R" is Latin for Rex, meaning "king.") The Imperial State Crown is just inches from the spider's path. And since the arachnid quickly scurried away, who knows where it is now? It could have taken up residence in the crown itself.

One person dubbed it, "the most famous spider in the world right now."

Another theorized how confused the little spider must have been, writing, "Imagine you're a spider in the garden and you fall asleep in a pink rose. When you wake up, you stretch all your little legs and realize that you're suddenly naked in Westminster Abbey, on top of the queen's coffin in front of world leaders and billions of people."

Though the funeral was, of course, a serious, solemn event, the spider inspired some to spin jokes. Said one person, "it's all part of the endless web coverage."

Others used the spider to make a point about the lengthy funeral coverage versus the time spent on major news events.

One person wrote, "Puerto Rico: has no power or potable water Every cable news network: 'Was that?….yes, I believe a spider just crawled across the queen's coffin.'"

Naturally, the spider now has at least one Twitter account, with more than 160 followers as of this writing. 

"For anyone wondering, I am just a little garden spider / an orb weaver of sorts," the person behind TheRoyalSpider account wrote. "Hope this helps! Having a bit of an identity crisis with all the fame…"

Queen Elizabeth II died on Sept. 8 at age 96 after reigning for 70 years. She will be buried in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, next to her late husband, Prince Philip, who died last year at age 99.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar on Monday opened a criminal investigation into Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ operation sending illegal aliens to Martha’s Vineyward.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said his office is opening an investigation after he says migrants were “lured” away from the Migrant Resource Center in San Antonio and flown to Florida and Massachusetts “under false pretenses.”

He said the sheriff’s office believes that a Venezuelan migrant was paid a “bird dog fee” last Wednesday to recruit about 50 migrants from around the migrant resource center on San Pedro Boulevard in San Antonio.

Ultimately, 48 migrants were “lured under false pretenses” into staying at a hotel for a couple of days and then were flown to Florida and then Martha’s Vineyard, he said.

“They were promised work and solutions to several of their problems,” Salazar said, but instead, “they were unceremoniously stranded” there.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar claimed that the migrants were “lured” into making the flight, even though a Florida publication reported that they obtained a brochure given to the illegal immigrants that showed that Massachusetts is where they were going.

“That does tend to bother me quite a bit,” Salazar said. “And so we are absolutely opening up an investigation into this.”

“I believe people need to be held accountable for it to the extent possible,” he said. “At this point, I’m not able to definitively say here’s the statute that they broke either federal, state or local. But what I can tell you is it’s wrong just from a human rights perspective, what was done to these folks is wrong.”

“From now on out, we’re hoping to talk to some of these these victims and witnesses firsthand to find out what was said what was done, how were you lured into this, and then the full extent of how they were placed in harm’s way,” he continued. “At that point, we will make the determination if there was any criminal activity. Certainly, I can tell you right now, the allegations that we’ve heard, is absolutely distasteful. It’s disgusting.”

DeSantis said at a press conference that the people who were contracted gave the illegal immigrants a release form to sign and a packet that included a map of Martha’s Vineyard. “So it was obvious that that’s where they were going and they gave that to them,” DeSantis added.

Florida’s Voice reported Monday that they obtained one of the brochures that the illegal immigrants were given prior to heading to Martha’s Vineyard. The publication said that they confirmed the information with the governor’s office.

The brochure, which is written in both English and Spanish, is titled: “Massachusetts Refugee Benefits/Massachusetts Beneficios para Refugiados,” and includes pictures of Massachusetts.

Florida’s Voice said that the brochure contained information “directly from the Massachusetts government website.”

Ohio parents, grandmother arrested after baby found locked in cage, another holding meth pipe

On Sunday, September 18th, Hocking County Sheriff’s Office Detectives, with the assistance of the Logan-Hocking Special Response Team, executed a search warrant at a residence on Bear Run Road, in relation to a sexual assault investigation.

When law enforcement personnel entered the residence, which was in deplorable condition, they located a three-year-old child locked inside a cage, which was secured with zipties. The cage that the infant was in was filled with bugs, soiled bedding, and a cup full of spoiled milk. A two-year-old was also found walking around the residence holding a methamphetamine pipe.

The parents of the infants left the children and fled the residence due to their involvement with the sexual assault investigation. The grandmother of the infants, who has custody of the children, was able to be detained and taken into custody.

The two infants were able to be safely taken into emergency custody with the assistance of South Central Ohio Job And Family Services and placed in emergency foster care.

The grandmother, Ella Webb, 61 of Logan, was arrested and charged with Endangering Children, a 3rd Degree Felony. She was transported to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office Jail to await her arraignment in Hocking County Municipal Court.

Additionally, 3rd Degree Felony charges of Endangering Children were filed against the parents, Franklin “TJ” Varney, 38 of Logan, and Megan Smith, 25 of Logan.

On Monday, September 19th, both Varney and Smith were taken into custody after they were chased by law enforcement on foot through the woods near their residence on Bear Run Road.
