Seattle police chief blasts city officials, says leaving precinct ‘not my decision’

Seattle’s police chief told her department Thursday it was “not my decision” to abandon a precinct in an area of the city taken over by protesters — and blasted city officials for giving in to the demonstrators.

In a video address published on the department’s YouTube page, Chief Carmen Best said the city “relented to severe public pressure.”

“You fought for days to protect [the precinct]. I asked you to stand on that line. Day in and day out, to be pelted with projectiles, to be screamed at, threatened and in some cases hurt,” Best told the force.

“Then to have a change of course nearly two weeks in, it seems like an insult to you and our community.”

“Ultimately the city had other plans for the building and relented to severe public pressure,” she added. “I’m angry about how this all came about.”

Her comments came a day after the department said it would try to reopen the East Precinct.

The area around the precinct had became a hotbed of confrontations between protesters and cops over the last two weeks during demonstrations over the death of George Floyd, the black Minneapolis man whose cop-involved death has sparked a global movement against racial injustice.

Officers used tear gas, pepper spray and flash bangs over the weekend to disperse demonstrators they said were assaulting them with projectiles.

The building was shuttered on Monday, amid growing demands from the protesters.

They have since occupied a six-block perimeter dubbed “CHAZ” — short for the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” — around the now-deserted precinct.

The situation caught the attention of President Trump, who on Thursday demanded that local authorities step in to take the streets back — or he would.

“Radical Left Governor @JayInslee and the Mayor of Seattle are being taunted and played at a level that our great Country has never seen before. Take back your city NOW. If you don’t do it, I will,” the president tweeted Thursday.

“This is not a game. These ugly Anarchists must be stopped IMMEDIATELY. MOVE FAST!”

The War Room revealed today that The Daily Beast’s Roger Sollenberger, who has become known for his smears of prominent conservatives, used to work for a sanctioned military company closely linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

 

Before entering the corporate “journalism” world, Sollenberger worked as an employee for the CCP-linked drone company DJI. And the exposure from the Twitter files shows direct involvement of the IC (Intelligence Community - ALL OF THEM) AGAINST We the People and the Constitution.

And now, “they” are trying to prevent him from running again; the best we can expect is more of the same.

We will NOT be able to vote our way out of this mess; nor will we be able to pray our way out; though I caution against giving up either.

Tech companies believed the federal employees in the FBI and law enforcement, and when the New York Post reported on allegations of influence peddling on the Biden name and shady business dealings benefiting the Biden family, Twitter censored it outright, as did Facebook.

 

While the GOP controls the House but not the Senate or the White House, they will be able to launch investigations to get to the bottom of just how much the Biden administration manipulated and lied to the American public, but will be unlikely to be able to make or pass laws, since they would not have the votes in the Senate.

Brunson Brothers Case Denied by Supreme Court

 

The Brunson Brothers election integrity lawsuit was dismissed by the US Supreme Court on Monday.

 

Raland Brunson released this statement moments ago.

 

Raland Brunson says the brothers are planning their next move.

 

Here is the background information on the case from an earlier Gateway Pundit report.

 

These brothers have filed their suit and it is currently with the US Supreme Court. They claim that the actions by US politicians to ignore requests and arguments from the people to investigate the 2020 Election fell on deaf ears. But the brothers argue that these politicians had a Constitutional duty to investigate.

 

According to their website, this case started after the corrupted 2020 Election:

 

Loy, Raland, Deron and Gaynor Brunson (the brothers) witnessed the 2020 election along with claims from members of congress that the election was rigged. What got their attention was when the proposition to investigate those claims was presented to Congress and put to a vote. What came as a shock to the four brothers is when they discovered that 387 members of Congress along with VP Mike Pence actually voted against the proposed investigation, thus thwarting the investigation. Whether the election was rigged or not was no longer their main concern. What now became the concern was when those members of Congress violated their sworn oath by voting to thwart the investigation.

 

The brothers wanted to do something about this. Their brother Deron had quite a lot of experience in the legal field, which started out when he began suing banks in an attempt to show the corruption in that part of the financial world, so he had enough knowledge to file a lawsuit against the now current 385 members of Congress along with VP Mike Pence, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. He already had experience with the SCOTUS by bringing two petitions to them, both of which were denied, but this experience gave him enough success along the way to give him the confidence that maybe, just maybe, he might be able to do something about this thwarted investigation.

 

Their brother Gaynor was heavily occupied with his audio/video television business (Rock Canyon Studios) so Deron got together with his other two brothers to plan out the strategy. They decided to have their oldest brother Loy to be the name on the lawsuit, which is called a “Complaint” and because he would be on the Complaint, the Court would refer to him as the Plaintiff. The 388 people being sued will now be called Defendants. Loy filed the complaint, which eventually got stuck in the Federal Court, so they got together and decided to have their brother Raland file the identical lawsuit with his name on it, in the Utah 2nd District Court. While Loy’s lawsuit continued to be held hostage in the Federal Court, Raland’s lawsuit eventually made it to the SCOTUS.

 

The case received more attention after it reached the Supreme Court. It now has been given a docket number 22-380 with the court.

 

As this effort moved forward, the brothers needed to serve the 388 defendants in the case. This took a lot of work and paper.

Election Fraud Infrastructure: Your Government At Work!

There is nothing so unnerving as government-initiated election fraud, perpetrated by both political parties, hiding in plain sight. This is the world we live in — the one Republicans are about to encounter.

 

The most basic ingredient for industrial-scale voter fraud is the voter roll, fat with phantom names and addresses. Someone may be able to transport 250,000 paper ballots from New York to Pennsylvania, leave the truck in the parking lot, and find it gone when he returns.

 

Those ballots are useless paper if not tied to an identity at a real address.

The hard part is creating people and addresses — it is an industrial-scale operation.

 

Just think how hard it would be for you and your pals to create 250,000 fake names and tie each to a real address.

 

You need to create those voters — the way the pros do — which leaves out the Republicans. Make it government work.

 

Here's how it's done.

 

Arizona, a state with a Republican governor and Republican legislature at the time, has a nice little law to help out. Go look this baby up. Basically, it says, hey, all you "non-partisan" NGOs (non-governmental agencies), want to register voters? Heres a portal to do it. Just log on, enter at least 1,000 new voters, and you are good to go.

 

What could go wrong? Kari Lake, maybe?

 

RINOs are easily swayed about getting everyone to vote — you can see the League of Women Voter types making such an argument.

 

Let's not pick on Arizona. In Wisconsin, those boys and girls created an app. That's really hip.

Ben Sasse Officially Leaves U.S. Senate, Takes Parting Jab at Trump

 

U.S. Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) has officially resigned after announcing that he would do so in a statement last year. The former Nebraska Senator took one last parting jab at former President Trump while heading out the door for his new position at the University of Florida.

 

Sasse — who served as the president of Midland University in his home state before running for Senate — submitted is resignation last month and said he would be leaving office on January 8.

 

In his farewell remarks, Sasse was critical of the U.S. Senate’s ability to function. “Each of us knows we should be taking a look in the mirror and acknowledging that lives lived in a politicized echo chamber are unworthy of a place that calls itself a deliberative body, let alone the world’s greatest deliberative body,” Sasse said.

 

“When we’re being honest with each other, which usually means when on one of the very rare occasions where cameras aren’t present, we all know that a big chunk of the performative yelling that happens here and in every hearing room is just about being booked for even more performative yelling at night on TV,” he continued.

 

Prior to leaving, Sasse took one final parting shot at former president Trump. “I’m just sad for him as a human because obviously there’s a lot of complicated stuff going on in that soul,” Sasse told the Omaha World-Herald of Trump. “Just at a human level, I’m sad for him to be that needy and desperate.”

 

Sasse was one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to impeach then President Trump following the January 6 Capitol protests. He accused Trump of inciting violence and “threatening” election officials, among other things. “Those lies had consequences, endangering the life of the vice president and bringing us dangerously close to a bloody constitutional crisis,” Sasse said of Trump’s voter fraud claims.

 

“Each of these actions are violations of a president’s oath of office.”

 

The Nebraska Senator frequently criticized Trump throughout his tenure despite the former president’s popularity in his home state.

 

When Trump announced his re-election bid prior to 2020, Sasse said that he “kisses dictators’ butts,” “flirted with white supremacists,” disparages women, “mocks evangelicals behind closed doors” and “treats the presidency like a business opportunity.”

 

The seat will now be filled through an appointment by Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, a Republican. The state’s previous governor, Pete Ricketts, said that he would seek the position.

In Wisconsin, they have far more registrations on the rolls than there are voters. They keep their inactives, even if they are dead. Never know when the dead or moved might come in handy.

Arizona lets people vote from R.V. parks — the kind where it's a week's stay. Arizona lets people vote from "no address."

 

We found 8,000 people in Arizona registered at hotels. In most states, that's a disqualifier. Not in Arizona. The state encourages it.

Former Czech Premier Babis Acquitted of Fraud Charges

 

Today, a Prague court acquitted former Czech Republic premier Andrej Babis of financial fraud charges related to a $2 million European Union subsidies case.

 

The acquittal improves prospects for Babis in the presidential election this week, as polls show he is one of the favorites.

 

The prosecution sought a suspended jail sentence and a fine for Babis and a former aide, accusing them of illegally obtaining €2 million (about $2.15 million) in EU small business funds to build a hotel and conference centre in Bohemia by not revealing that it was part of Babis’s Agrofert, a multi-branch holding company, which would be ineligible for such subsidies.

 

Babis pleaded not guilty, and said the case was politically motivated.

 

Judge Jan Sott said it has not been proven that the actions of Babis and one of his managers were not a crime.

 

“This is good news for the entire Czech Republic, all citizens, that we live in a rule of law country and have independent justice and a court that independently ruled that we are acquitted,” he told reporters, referring to himself and one of his managers who was co-accused.

 

Babis, 68, built the Agrofert Group business empire with interests in farming, chemicals, food processing, and media. He placed his business interests into a trust in 2017 amid accusations of conflicts of interest with his government roles.

 

His businesses receive millions of euros in EU subsidies every year under the bloc’s agricultural policy in addition to subsidies for investment projects.

 

Babis was Czech finance minister in 2014-2017 and prime minister in 2017-2021. A centre-right coalition unseated him in 2021 despite his centrist ANO party winning more seats in parliament than any of its rivals.

 

Babis is in a race with independent rivals Petr Pavel and Danuse Nerudova—both backed by the current centre-right government—for the presidency, opinion polls have shown.

 

Babis is also the subject of another investigation related to the same conference centre outside Prague, and a French investigation over a financial fraud allegedly involving his purchase of property in France, according to French media.

 

He has denied wrongdoing in those cases as well.

Former FTX US boss Brett Harrison vows to spill dirt on crypto disaster

 

Former FTX US boss Brett Harrison pledged on Sunday night to spill more details about the doomed crypto exchange’s inner workings – and hinted he may already be cooperating with the feds.

 

Harrison has kept a low profile in recent weeks as disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was arrested and other top executives began talking to investigators about alleged illicit activity at the company.

 

“What did you know about @FTX_Official US and when did you know it?” a Twitter user asked Harrison on Sunday night.

 

“I’ll share in time,” Harrison replied.

 

When another asked why Harrison wasn’t already “in prison,” the former FTX executive replied that they should “use powers of inference.”

Harrison served as president of FTX’s US operation until he abruptly stepped down from the high-ranking post last September after less than 18 months on the job. At the time, Bloomberg described Harrison’s departure as a “surprise exit” that raised eyebrows within the cryptocurrency sector.

 

Two months after Harrison left, FTX was forced into bankruptcy after Bankman-Fried allegedly engaged in what the feds have described as “one of the biggest financial frauds” in history.

It is a great boost to the government's goal of the Atmanirbhar Bharat, which was launched with the goal of positioning India as a significant player in the global market through self-created opportunities.

 

The initial goal of the PLI scheme was to increase India's manufacturing capacity, create more employment opportunities, lessen the nation's dependency on imports, and increase exports. The PLI scheme has so far been implemented in 14 significant industries, including aviation, automobile components, electronics technology, telecom, pharmaceuticals, textiles, white goods, and renewable energy, among others.

 

The functional use of this emerging techno product is being explored in various sectors of the economy like defence, healthcare, agriculture, logistic & transportation and sports. The rise in India’s drone industry will contribute towards technological advancement and marking its presence in the global market. The Drone Rules, a welcome regulatory breakthrough, envisages on:

 

-Government’s intent to allow the use of drones while at the same time ensuring security

-Improve the ease of doing business in the sector by reducing the number of clearances and compliance requirements for registration

-Aim to make India a drone hub by 2030

 

This much awaited PLI scheme is the outcome of liberalised Drone Rules, 2021 released by the Central Government in the year 2021. This Scheme will be of great financial support to start-up and small-scale entrepreneurs which is growing at a faster pace in the era of Make in India.

 

Companies that are registered in India are only eligible to take the benefit under this PLI scheme for manufacturing drones, drone components which are exclusively used for manufacturing drones and developers of drone-related software. The Project Management Agency (PMA) will be in charge of secretarial, management, and implementation of the scheme. The applications will be examined by a committee presided over by the Secretary of Civil Aviation, based on the recommendation of the PMA.

Teletubbies and Crocs are sponsoring underage fashion show at RuPaul's drag convention

 

RuPaul Charles' DragCon is returning to Britain this weekend. The first iteration of this exhibition of transvestite culture took place in Los Angeles in 2015, touted as the debut convention celebrating "the art of drag, queer culture and self-expression for all."

 

This year's DragCon counts the perforated shoe company Crocs and the children's' television show "Teletubbies" among its sponsors. Both the convention and the after-hours shows are all ages, despite some performers set to walk about with fake sex organs exposed.

 

The event website states, "DragCon is an all-ages, family friendly event and all are welcome at RuPaul’s DragCon UK. Kids 8 and under are free when accompanied by an adult with a ticket."

The reason I bring this up is because I'm becoming increasingly worried that some people may be intending to enshrine their ideals in steel by replacing the human element with machines. In 2022, The IRS Went After The Very Poorest Taxpayers

 

Despite $80 billion in new funding, the agency is living up to its reputation of hassling low-income taxpayers over rich people…

 

On Wednesday, Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) released data provided to it by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on audits performed by the agency in fiscal year 2022. Despite the infusion of new funding earmarked for the IRS via last year's Inflation Reduction Act, the agency continued historic trends of hassling primarily low-income taxpayers, with relatively few millionaires and billionaires getting caught up in the audit sweep.

 

"The taxpayer class with unbelievably high audit rates—five and a half times virtually everyone else—were low-income wage-earners taking the earned income tax credit," reported TRAC, noting that the poorest taxpayers are "easy marks in an era when IRS increasingly relies upon correspondence audits yet doesn't have the resources to assist taxpayers or answer their questions."

 

In fact, "if one ignores the fiction of auditing a millionaire through simply sending a letter through the mail, the odds that millionaires received a regular audit by a revenue agent (1.1%) was actually less than the audit rate of the targeted lowest income wage-earners whose audit rate was 1.27 percent!"

 

The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in August 2022, directed $80 billion worth of new funding over the next decade to the IRS so it could hire 87,000 new workers, purportedly to better target millionaire and billionaire scofflaws. The Biden administration and credulous journalists claimed that this would in no way increase audits for those making under $400,000 annually—suspect assurances not provided within the text of the actual bill. This increased capacity meant only those at the top would be targeted, supporters insisted. But this ignores how the IRS's incentives work and how agencywide reform might be too heavy of a lift.

 

Correspondence audits—which are conducted via mail, and are the type frequently used when interacting with the poorest of taxpayers—are much easier and cheaper to conduct than other types of audits. Plus, the earned income tax credit is easy to get wrong. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that new hires with experience in the field will take almost three years of ramp-up time, with more junior new hires taking longer. The lag time between 2022's infusion of funding, and legitimately increased capacity, will be enormous—if the agency can even snag the best in the industry when TurboTax and H&R Block will surely be swelling their own ranks. It makes sense that, given a dearth of experienced auditors not likely to be fixed soon, the agency would rely on the easiest and least time-consuming types of audits.

 

But be suspicious of the idea that an infusion of cash will solve longstanding problems within the IRS. This is, after all, the agency that sent $1.1 billion in child welfare payments to the wrong people over the course of merely five months during the pandemic. It's the agency that was hacked back in 2015, resulting in the personal information of more than 700,000 taxpayers being compromised. It's the agency that has been foolishly going after Americans who hold $10,000 or more in a foreign bank since 2010, never mind the fact that many of them are middle-class expats, not folks with yachts in the Mediterranean. And it's the (leaky) agency that enabled the richest Americans' intimate financial information to be thumbed through by ProPublica readers. It will take more than a little cash to fix all this, and, as the IRS's competence and tenacity increase, so too will the tenacity of the vast infrastructure of accountants and lawyers hired by the rich to creatively minimize their tax burdens.

 

Though some libertarians may argue such an agency ought not to exist in the first place and cheer its relative ineptitude at going after the well-to-do, it's decidedly absurd that the agency taxpayers just fed $80 billion to has, for another year, continued its assault on the poor.

Separating our feelings from our thoughts, words and acts is what we learn to do here. As we get better at this - at separating feelings and thoughts - we're no longer triggered by the taunts of the like common venomous shills.

Conservative Catholics still mourning the tragic passing of Pope Benedict XVI may receive some good news in the near future. A group of Vatican conservatives apparently want to remove his woke, anti-capitalist successor Pope Francis in hopes of replacing Francis with one of their own.

 

The Daily Telegraph reported Sunday that Francis’s conservative adversaries in the Vatican have a “secret plan” to force him to resign. This scheme moved into motion “days” after Benedict XVI’s death.

 

Vatican conservatives have long been critical of Francis’s support for open borders, communion for remarried divorcees, and more moderate views on abortion and homosexuality. The Telegraph notes they will need time to both gather consensus and to “weaken” Francis.

“But with Benedict’s death on December 31, resignation is now a real prospect. That has opened the way for conservatives, who oppose his stance on issues ranging from homosexuality, abortion, communion for remarried divorcees and celibacy for priests, to start moving against him.”

 

“They have long seen him as being too critical of capitalism and too liberal on illegal immigration, with some going so far as to deride him as a “communist.”

 

“The secret plan will be formulated on various axes and phases, but it will have one objective – to place the pontificate under such stress that Francis will have to resign,” an Italian cardinal told La Stampa newspaper on Sunday.”

International diplomacy shows its limits when it comes to talking about peace. But it is very efficient when it comes to switching to cash. Thus, with the war underway, there is already talk of the reconstruction of Ukraine. And they entrust the projects.

 

The plan for the reconstruction of Ukraine was discussed in Lugano in the first days of July last year. 41 countries and 19 international organizations participated in the Swiss convention. BlackRock, one of the world’s largest investment managers, has provided “advisory support for the design of an investment framework, with the aim of creating opportunities for public and private investors to participate in the future reconstruction and recovery of the Ukrainian economy .”

In contrast, the remaining 123 cases were among the unvaccinated population, with only 1 person being hospitalized (0.8%), and no deaths occurring in either group.

 

The study also found that viral loads were very similar among the vaccinated and unvaccinated, indicating that both groups were equally infectious.

US Corporations Are Still Lining Up to Buy Back Their Own Shares

 

The rising threat of an economic recession has done nothing to dissuade Corporate America from spending big on its own shares.

 

American firms announced a record $1.26 trillion of share buybacks in 2022, up 3% from a year ago, according to data compiled by Birinyi Associates. By the firm’s estimate, companies executed on 82% of that total, spending $1.03 trillion. And the outlays aren’t just to offset employee stock grants that would otherwise dilute ownership, Birinyi found. The number of shares outstanding has shrunk for the top buyers in recent years, a sign that those repurchases have bolstered equity prices, or in the case of 2022’s bear market prevented losses from snowballing. As companies retrench for an economic slowdown, cutting costs on everything from advertising to travel and hiring, the continued commitment to share buybacks serves as a counter to the doom and gloom on Wall Street. “Despite 98% or whatever survey you want to use of CEOs saying they are worried about a recession, they are still comfortable enough to spend money on stock buybacks, so are they really that worried?” said Jeff Rubin, director of research at Birinyi Associates. Barring a severe recession, another year of $1 trillion or more of buybacks wouldn’t be surprising, he said.

 

The steady demand from repurchases continues to be one the few upward forces left in the market at a time when investors of all stripes have been pulling back from stocks. About one week into 2023, an index tracking companies with the highest buybacks has beaten the S&P 500 by 1.9 percentage points — the second-best start to a year since 2009. During the past decade, the basket outperformed by 45 percentage points.

 

Spending money on stock has repeatedly drawn criticism from politicians and academics who say the cash would be better used to help boost long-term growth, such as employee benefits and equipment upgrades. A law imposing a 1% tax on buybacks goes in effect this year.

European Ministers Say Musk Agreed to Censorship Demands for Twitter

 

If two European ministers are to be believed, Elon Musk has agreed to censorship restrictions on free speech for Twitter in Europe.

 

Just after Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk’s promotion of a Chinese executive to head of Tesla operations in the United States raised eyebrows, Musk again seems to be appeasing anti-freedom governments. While Germany and France are certainly not Communist China, their planned censorship laws are still concerning. And Elon Musk apparently agreed to restrict Twitter content based on European Union (EU) demands.

 

Of course, Twitter has to abide by the laws in the countries where it operates (though the European laws aren’t in effect yet). But when Musk gives in immediately whenever a censorship law is passed, that’s a sobering precedent to Twitter users in the states — our free speech on Twitter apparently depends on the government. Meanwhile, the Biden administration’s recent attempt at forming a Disinformation Governance Board and revelations of government censorship pressure in the Twitter Files indicate just how protected free speech is from that quarter.

 

French Minister for Digital Transition and Telecommunications Jean-Noël Barrot tweeted on Jan. 7 (Twitter’s translation), “At Twitter headquarters, @elonmusk confirmed to me its intention to comply with European rules, and its commitments on content moderation, the fight against disinformation and child protection. In line with its exchange with [French President] @EmmanuelMacron.” Barrot included a picture of him talking with Elon Musk.

 

The German Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Volker Wissing claimed on Jan. 4 in a tweet with a selfie of him and Musk (Twitter’s translation), “Thank you @elonmusk for a constructive conversation in San Francisco. My stance is clear: the platforms’ commitment to #D[i]sinformation must be strictly adhered to until #DSA comes into force. Elon Musk agreed with me.”

 

The DSA (Digital Services Act) is set to increase content moderation online. Unfortunately, the past few years and the Twitter Files taught us that “content moderation” too often means “censorship of narratives leftists don’t like.”

 

The EU website says, “The Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act [DMA] aim to create a safer digital space where the fundamental rights of users are protected and to establish a level playing field for businesses.” Very idealistic words, but don’t be fooled.

 

As Breitbart noted back in April 2022, the DSA’s targeting of “illegal content” includes “hate speech” and “disinformation,” favorite leftist catchphrases to justify censoring whatever they dislike. After all, in the United States, insisting a woman cannot be a man has been considered hate speech. Both the DMA and DSA are potentially dangerous to free speech, according to the Media Research Center.

 

Elon Musk’s own views on the EU laws are unclear, since he does not seem to have issued any statements himself. This could mean anything from unhappy agreement to cheerful acquiescence, of course. Considering his often–expressed views on the importance of free speech and the release of the Twitter Files under his leadership, Musk presumably sees content moderation as a potentially dangerous vehicle of censorship.

COMNAP, the Antarctic organisation based in New Zealand you've probably never heard of

It’s one of our nearest neighbours and it’s larger than the United States, but how much do you really know about Antarctica? Reporter Lee Kenny looks at the countries that operate on the frozen continent, their weird and wonderful bases and exactly what they do there.

 

It's possible you've never heard of COMNAP – the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs – and yet it plays a major role in life on the ice.

 

It’s also headquartered in Christchurch and said to be a “jewel in the crown” of the city’s Antarctic Gateway status.

 

Thousands of people from across the globe visit Antarctica each year, and although countries operate independently – most in accordance with the 1959 Antarctic Treaty – it’s a place of great international cooperation.

 

This is in no small part thanks to COMNAP.

 

The need for an organisation to support and enhance collaboration in the Antarctic was identified in the mid-1980s.

 

With “growing interest in Antarctica”, COMNAP was formed in 1988, to “ensure effective and collaborative operations, logistics and science support”, among 22 national programmes.

 

Today, it has 32 members – including Antarctica New Zealand – and is open to countries engaged in Antarctic research, provided they are also signatories to the Antarctic Treaty and the Environmental Protocol.

 

“We are a council, that means that everyone sits around the table, has an equal voice and an equal vote,” said Michelle Rogan-Finnemore, COMNAP's executive secretary and director of the secretariat.

 

New Zealand won hosting rights for the COMNAP Secretariat during an international bidding process in 2008.

 

The organisation now lives within Gateway Antarctica at University of Canterbury (UC), having previously been based in the United States and then Australia.

 

Christchurch is one of five Antarctic Gateway Cities – as well as Hobart, Ushuaia, Punta Arenas and Cape Town – and also based in the Garden City is Antarctica New Zealand, whose chief executive Sarah Williamson sits on the COMNAP council.

 

Every year, the original 12 “Parties to the Treaty” and other eligible countries meet to make recommendations for ongoing activity in Antarctica.

 

The next meeting will be held in Helsinki, Finland, in May. COMNAP is one of three permanent observer organisations that can submit advice at the annual meetings.

 

“This is pretty important, and it allows us to put forward […] practical, technical and, really importantly, non-political advice,” said Rogan-Finnemore.

 

In addition to the 32 National Antarctic Programme Members, COMNAP includes five observer programmes: Colombia, Malaysia, Portugal, Switzerland and Venezuela.

 

“It's to help them to learn as they grow their programme into a full national Antarctic programme.”

 

COMNAP also runs a number of projects, such as its Covid-19 outbreak management response.

 

It recently launched an earthquake, tsunami and volcanic event awareness plan, as “currently in the Peninsula we are seeing a very high level of seismic activity”, says Rogan-Finnemore.

 

“Let's imagine you're someone from a country that never gets an earthquake, and then you travel to Antarctica, and you're involved in an earthquake, what do you need to do to protect yourself and your team?”

 

As well as heading COMNAP, US-born, Christchurch-based Rogan-Finnemore is a geologist and lawyer who helped start the Gateway Antarctica programme at UC.

 

She has spent two winters in Antarctica – including one at the South Pole where she took geodesy and seismology observations for the US Geological Survey – and has an Antarctic mountain named after her – the 2050m Finnemore Peak.

 

The strength of the national Antarctic programmes, she said, is that they “have the greatest firsthand experience of the Antarctic”.

 

“They have been sending people there since the 1960s, so they know Antarctica.”

 

Many of the people who sit around the table and make the laws and rules for the Antarctic haven’t actually been there, she said.

 

“They might be good policymakers in their own right, but COMNAP feels like we’re providing a reality check.”

RAISING EYEBROWS: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Agrees Joe Biden is Legitimately Elected President – Distances Herself from QAnon

 

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA 14th District) said during an interview on Sunday that she believed Joe Biden was legitimately elected as president.

 

She also distanced herself from the online group QAnon for getting her “sucked into” their conspiracy theories.

 

Green made an appearance on the far left Fox News’ “MediaBuzz” on Sunday to talk about the recent election for the US House Speaker last week.

 

During the interview, host Howard Kurtz mentioned that Greene was removed from Committee Assignments in 2021 after her previous statements she made based on a “QAnon conspiracy theory.”

 

“Just to deal with one bit of history, the Democrats stripped you of your community assignments after you were elected. That was raw politics. But in fairness, didn’t you also say around that period that you had been a follower of QAnon conspiracy theories, and you had rethought this and you were no longer influenced by the group?” Kurtz asked.

 

“Like a lot of people today, I had easily gotten sucked into some things I had seen on the internet,” Greene responded.

 

“But that was dealt with quickly early on. I never campaigned on those things. That was not something I believed in. That’s not what I ran for Congress on. So those are so far in the past,” she continued.

 

Kurtz also asked Greene if she believed Joe Biden was legitimately elected as president.

 

“Do you believe that Joe Biden is the legitimately elected president?” Kurtz said.

Some House Republican are lining up against the proposed new House rules, with voting set to begin as early as Monday amid opposition to cuts to defense spending and other issues.

 

Among those most vocal in opposition to the defense cuts is Texas Rep.

Tony Gonzales, who raises concerns about less money to Ukraine in its effort to end the Russia invasion and for the U.S. response to China's military buildup.

 

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in his ultimately successful effort last week to secure the post made several concessions in the rules package to get the votes he needed from about 20 of his conference's most conservative members.

 

President Biden had requested an increase in defense spending for fiscal 2023, compared to the previous fiscal year, which was more than in fiscal 2021, a trend that is raising concerns among fiscal conservatives and others in the conference.

South Carolina GOP Rep. Nancy Mace shared similar concerns about the rules package, particularly about the changes as a result of the speakership horse trading.

 

"I want to see it in writing," she said Sunday. "I want to see what promises were made. And what we are being told is that these handshakes … will go through regular order and go through the regular appropriations process. I don't want to see defense cuts. We don't know what deals were made. And that's something that we should be transparent about. Sunshine is the best medicine."

 

She also said she remains "on a fence" over how she'll vote.

 

On Monday, Gonzales said he also opposes the portion of the package that would allow one House member to make a motion to vacate the chair, which means remove the speaker.

 

"I don't want to see us every two months be in lockdown," he said on the Fox News Channel. "This isn't the parliament. The American public are counting on House Republicans to be the one savior in this all. If we can't get this right, it's going to be nightmare after nightmare."

 

Other GOP lawmakers, such as Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (N.Y.), said some of the backroom deals that were made to form the current version of the rules package might cause her to vote against it on the floor.

The US Supreme Court not only decided not to look at the Brunson brothers’ case, but also decided not to take up the Bonner case challenging the legality of mail-in ballots.

 

Such a shame. The US Supreme Court is absolutely frightened to take up strong cases that challenge corrupt elections or corrupt practices. Yet this is the biggest issue facing our country right now and the biggest threat to our Constitution.

The United Nations-backed Scientific Assessment Panel said Monday the world's ozone layer is "on track to recover" within the next four decades because ozone-depleting chemicals are being phased out around the globe.

Nearly 99% of banned ozone-depleting substances have been phased out, the group found in its report, which is published every four years.

 

The panel said the ozone layer's recovery is due to the success of the Montreal Protocol, an international agreement adopted in 1987 to phase out ozone layer-depleting substances.

 

"If current policies remain in place, the ozone layer is expected to recover to 1980 values (before the appearance of the ozone hole) by around 2066 over the Antarctic, by 2045 over the Arctic and by 2040 for the rest of the world," the United Nations-backed group said.

 

The panel stated that variations in the Antarctic ozone hole, mostly over the past five years, have been due to "meteorological conditions," but "the Antarctic ozone hole has been slowly improving in area and depth since the year 2000."

 

Despite the accomplishment in healing the ozone layer(here it comes, fearporn), U.N. World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said fossil fuels should be targeted next.

 

"Ozone action sets a precedent for climate action," Taalas said. "Our success in phasing out ozone-eating chemicals shows us what can and must be done — as a matter of urgency — to transition away from fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse gases and so limit temperature increase."

He also didn’t visit the downtown area overrun by homeless migrants, meet with local residents, make formal remarks or speak with reporters.

 

After the president arrived at the airport, reporters waited to speak with him and expressed their expectation to hear him give remarks, The Center Square observed. Several reporters continued to ask when the president might speak, expressing consternation about not being sure at what part of his three-hour planned visit they’d be able to ask questions.

 

The only official who spoke with reporters and answered their questions was Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

 

Abbott, who wasn’t included in Biden’s visit to Texas, arrived at the airport and waited to speak with the president. Sitting below Air Force One, he waited for the president to debark the plane. After descending the stairs, Biden shook hands with Abbott and accepted a letter the governor gave him. In it, Abbott later said he listed five actions the president could take to immediately secure the border.

 

They spoke briefly, after which the president left with Democratic officials. Abbott then made a point of speaking with reporters and answering their questions.

 

The president first visited a Customs and Border Protection processing center at the Bridge of Americas. Reporters waited outside, and again asked when they’d be able to ask the president questions. Biden again made no public remarks and didn’t take questions.

 

Of this part of the president’s visit, KVIA News 7 reported, “While at the Bridge of the Americas, President Biden watched as a canine officer demonstrated how it could find a suitcase in a trunk. The dog went around the car once and stopped at the trunk.

 

“The officers pulled out a suitcase and then took out what looked like fruit and a hunk of lunch meat.

 

“President Biden also saw another demonstration showing how a chocolate lab could find a package of what looks like drugs or money from the backseat of a Chevy pickup.”

 

Joining the president were Democratic U.S Reps. Veronica Escobar, Henry Cuellar and Vincente Gonzalez, the El Paso mayor and other local officials,

and several CBP agents.

 

None spoke with the media, but Cuellar tweeted he was meeting with the president “to discuss how to bring order to the border and treat migrants with respect as we implement a lawful path for relief.”

 

Biden lastly visited El Paso’s Migrant Processing Center and again didn’t make public remarks or take questions from the media.

 

The president never visited the actual border, where illegal crossings have escalated over the past several months, prompting El Paso’s mayor to declare an emergency and Abbott to deploy the Texas National Guard to El Paso last month….
