JOHANNESBURG - The trial of a man accused of being part of a sex ring with prominent human rights lawyer Paul Kennedy is set to begin in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday morning.

 

The 53-year-old man is facing over 700 counts of rape, sex trafficking and child pornography.

 

Kennedy died by suicide last year while facing charges relating to the possession of child pornography.

 

He was known for his work as a legal representative for prominent South African figures, and made an appearance at the State Capture Commission of Inquiry.

According to court papers, Kennedy - whom some say could be dubbed South Africa's Jeffrey Epstein - and his co-accused targeted teenage boys from across the country.

 

The State believes that like Epstein’s right-hand lady Ghislaine Maxwell, Kennedy’s co-accused had boys delivered to the lawyer’s Saxonwold residence, where they were allegedly groomed to perform lewd sexual acts on him.

 

The boys were allegedly also groomed to perform massages on Kennedy, which often advanced to acts of rape and sexual assault.

 

While Kennedy died by suicide while out on bail last year, his co–accused still has hundreds of counts to answer to.

 

While the State said the trial should be set down for two weeks, the presiding judge, Mohamed Ismail, said that with the number of counts being investigated, the case was likely to run for at least an entire court term, which is three months.

Maxwell, 61, who was convicted of trafficking young women for Epstein, has previously claimed she believes the disgraced billionaire had been murdered in prison, according to her brother.

 

Speaking to Jeremy Kyle on his TalkTV programme, Maxwell was asked to address Epstein's victims. She said: 'I say that Epstein died and they should take their disappointment and upset out on the authorities who allowed that to happen. The Duke of York has reached a settlement with his accuser while not accepting any culpability. He had always vigorously denied her claims.

 

The circumstances around Epstein's death have always been a matter of controversy, with conspiracy theorists suggesting he was murdered to stop him from providing more information to prosecutors.

 

His family attorneys also said that the marks on his neck looked as though he had been strangled and not hanged by a sheet.

Outside the formerly defunct country club near Georgia Tech where the world's first all-news channel initially aired, a ceremony is planned this week to dedicate a significant piece of Midtown real estate to former media maverick, Atlanta sports team owner, environmental champion, and philanthropist Ted Turner.

 

Turner, 81, is expected to attend the Friday morning event, emceed by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, on the lawn of the circa-1940 mansion once coined “Tara on Techwood.”

 

WarnerMedia officials will dedicate their Techwood campus to Turner, who founded Turner Broadcasting System and launched CNN in the plantation-style building’s basement four decades ago while he lived in a room upstairs.

ATLANTA - CNN is moving out of the CNN Center, its longtime downtown Atlanta home by the end of this year.

 

The cable channel’s weekday anchors are all already in New York or Washington, but CNN still has digital and CNN International operations in Atlanta. 

 

Spokesperson Bridget Leininger confirmed in an email that the remaining CNN staff and operations in Atlanta would move to the Techwood Turner Broadcasting campus in Midtown.

 

The move will happen in stages and will finish by the end of this year, Leininger said.

 

CNN’s previous parent company, AT&T, sold the CNN Center for nearly $164 million to two Florida-based real estate firms, CP Group and Rialto Capital, in 2021.

One activist group in Norway is calling for Aretha Franklin’s hit 1968 song “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” to be removed from both Apple Music and Spotify after they deemed its lyrics offensive.

 

The Trans Cultural Mindfulness Alliance took to Twitter last week to condemn the ballad, citing that it has ignited harm against transgender women.

 

“Aretha Franklin’s 1968 song ‘Natural Woman’ perpetuates multiple harmful anti-trans stereotypes,” the organization tweeted. “There is no such thing as a ‘natural’ woman.”

 

The message continued, “The song has helped inspire acts of harm against transgender women. TCMA is requesting it is removed from Spotify & Apple Music.”

 

The Post has reached out to Franklin’s rep, Spotify and Apple Music for comment.

 

According to the organization’s bio on the social media platform, they aim to promote “cultural changes to ensure the inclusivity of trans individuals.”

 

Many Twitter users were outraged by the opinion about the Queen of Soul’s work and questioned the legitimacy of the claims.

 

“So, someone heard the song and attacked trans people?” one person wrote in response. “What are things that never happened for $400.”

 

Another wrote, “OMG Get a life & stop trying to cancel everything. How sad and pathetic one’s life must be if THIS is a priority to you. This is a GREAT song! YOU GO, GIRL! @ArethaFranklin.”

 

Someone else typed, “It’s a great song and I’m going to listen to it right now because of this post. Thanks!”

 

Others were so taken aback that they actually thought the statement was coming from a parody account.

 

“This is satire, right?” one user questioned.

 

“Clearly this is a parody. Good one guys! Almost got me,” someone else seconded.

 

The organization clarified later in a follow-up tweet that they were not, in fact, a parody account, but rather that they were trying to “make culture more fair for transgender individuals.”

 

At the time, Franklin’s song, “A Natural Woman,” was deemed a powerful song and had an inspiring message. She even performed the hit at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in 2015, during a ceremony honoring the track’s writers, Gerry Goffin and Carole King.

 

Then-President Obama was there for the performance and shed a tear.

Salt Lake City, Utah – A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City, Utah returned an indictment on January 11, 2023 charging a Utah plastic surgeon, his medical corporation, and three co-defendants, including his neighbor, with conspiracy to defraud the United States by issuing fake CDC COVID-19 vaccination record cards to fraudulent vaccine card seekers.

 

According to court documents, Dr. Michael Kirk Moore Jr., 58, of Salt Lake County, Utah and his co-defendants, listed below including his neighbor, ran a scheme out of Plastic Surgery Institute of Utah Inc. to defraud the United States and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

 

The defendants allegedly destroyed at least $28,028.50 worth of government-provided COVID-19 vaccines, and distributed at least 1,937 doses’ worth of fraudulently completed vaccination record cards to others in exchange for either direct cash payments or required “donations” to a specified charitable organization, without administering a COVID-19 vaccine to the card recipient.

 

As charged in court documents, defendants also administered saline shots to minors – at the request of their parents – so children would think they were receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

 

“By allegedly falsifying vaccine cards and administering saline shots to children instead of COVID-19 vaccines, not only did this provider endanger the health and well-being of a vulnerable population, but also undermined public trust and the integrity of federal health care programs,” said Curt L. Muller, Special Agent in Charge with the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General. “HHS-OIG remains committed to working with our law enforcement partners to hold accountable bad actors who attempt to illegally profit from the pandemic.”

 

“This defendant allegedly used his medical profession to administer bogus vaccines to unsuspecting people, to include children falsifying a sense of security,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Chris Miller, HSI Las Vegas. “HSI remains committed to working with our partners to bring those who seek to take advantage of the pandemic to deliberately harm and deceive others for their own profit to justice.”

 

Plastic Surgery Institute of Utah, Inc., Michael Kirk Moore Jr., Kari Dee Burgoyne, 52, Kristin Jackson Andersen, 59, and Sandra Flores, 31, are charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to convert, sell, convey, and dispose of government property; and conversion, sale, conveyance, and disposal of government property and aiding and abetting.

WASHINGTON — Days after he won his gavel in a protracted fight with hard-right Republicans, Speaker Kevin McCarthy gushed to a friend about the ironclad bond he had developed with an unlikely ally in his battle for political survival, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.

“I will never leave that woman,” Mr. McCarthy, a California Republican, told the friend, who described the private conversation on the condition of anonymity. “I will always take care of her.”

Such a declaration from Mr. McCarthy would have been unthinkable in 2021, when Ms. Greene first arrived on Capitol Hill in a swirl of controversy and provocation. A former QAnon follower who had routinely trafficked in conspiratorial, violent and bigoted statements, Ms. Greene was then widely seen as a dangerous liability to the party and a threat to the man who aspired to lead Republicans back to the majority — a person to be controlled and kept in check, not embraced.

But in the time since, a powerful alliance developed between Ms. Greene, the far-right rabble-rouser and acolyte of former President Donald J. Trump, and Mr. McCarthy, the affable fixture of the Washington establishment, according to interviews with 20 people with firsthand knowledge of the relationship, many of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss it.

Their political union — a closer and more complex one than has previously been known — helps explain how Mr. McCarthy rose to power atop a party increasingly defined by its extremes, the lengths to which he will go to accommodate those forces, and how much influence Ms. Greene and the faction she represents have in defining the agenda of the new House Republican majority.

“If you’re going to be in a fight, you want Marjorie in your foxhole,” Mr. McCarthy said. Both he and Ms. Greene agreed to brief interviews for this article. “When she picks a fight, she’s going to fight until the fight’s over. She reminds me of my friends from high school, that we’re going to stick together all the way through.”

It is a relationship born of political expediency but fueled by genuine camaraderie, and nurtured by one-on-one meetings as often as once a week, usually at a coffee table in Mr. McCarthy’s Capitol office, as well as a constant stream of text messages back and forth.

Mr. McCarthy has gone to unusual lengths to defend Ms. Greene, even dispatching his general counsel to spend hours on the phone trying to cajole senior executives at Twitter to reactivate her personal account after she was banned last year for violating the platform’s coronavirus misinformation policy.

Ms. Greene, in turn, has taken on an outsize role as a policy adviser to Mr. McCarthy, who has little in the way of a fixed ideology of his own and has come to regard the Georgia congresswoman as a vital proxy for the desires and demands of the right-wing base that increasingly drives his party. He has adopted her stances on opposing vaccine mandates and questioning funding for the war in Ukraine, and even her call to reinvestigate the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol to show what she has called “the other side of the story.”

People in the private sector do not take an oath of office when they get a job. They get an offer, report to work, and that’s it.

 

For federal employees it is different. Reading so many articles about the inauguration that refer to the president-elect taking the oath of office on the 20th of January got me thinking about oaths and what they mean.

 

I have taken that oath of office as a civil service employee. Raising your right hand and swearing to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States” is not something most people take lightly. It is a solemn oath and it means something to most people who take it.

 

The president becomes a federal employee by taking an oath prescribed by Article 2, Section 1, of the US Constitution. It says “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

 

Judges, members of the House and Senate, political appointees, the military, and other federal employees take oaths of office that are required by Article VI of the Constitution, which says “The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” The Constitution does not prescribe the actual text of the Article VI oaths. For federal civil service employees, the oath is set forth by law in 5 U.S. Code § 3331, which reads as follows:

BREAKING: Police Confirm Multiple Victims In School Shooting In Iowa.

 

IOWA – Police in Des Moines were at the scene of a shooting where multiple people were injured Monday.

The incident occurred at around 12:53 p.m. at Starts Right Here, a charter school that serves young people facing disadvantaged and oppressive situations, located at 455 Southwest Fifth St.

According to reports, at least three people were injured, with two being taken to the hospital in critical condition and one in stable condition.

 

The injured include two students and one staff member. The ages of the students have not been released.

Trump wants to end an exclusivity deal with Truth Social and get back on Twitter, Rolling Stone reported.

 

Truth Social CEO Devin Nunes denied an earlier report that Trump wants to make the switch.

 

The exclusivity agreement is up for renewal in June, just as the campaign season heats up.

 

Former President Donald Trump is preparing a Twitter comeback, with plans to drop an exclusivity agreement he has with his own platform, Truth Social, according to reports.

 

Trump has recently told people close to him that he doesn't want to renew the agreement with Truth Social's parent company, TMTG, two people familiar with the matter told Rolling Stone.

 

SEC filings show that Trump is currently obliged to wait six hours after posting on Truth Social before posting the same content on any other social media platform, an agreement that is up for renewal in June.

 

The agreement only applies to non-political content — he can post "political messaging, political fundraising or get-out-the vote efforts" anywhere at any time, the agreement states.

 

Trump hasn't tweeted since being reinstated on the platform in mid-November, following Elon Musk's takeover of the company, which heralded a shake-up of its moderation decisions.

 

Trump was kicked off of Twitter shortly after the deadly Capitol riot of January 6, 2021.
