DeWine also noted that the Ohio National Guard did a modeling exercise of how the release would work in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Defense to give some additional information and understand the full ramifications before making the decision. The modeling was then produced into a map, and the decision was made to proceed with the recommended controlled release.

“We made the decision to go ahead with the controlled release,” DeWine said.

At the press conference, DeWine did not comment on the legal authority he, Shapiro, and the collaborating agencies acted under when ordering the controlled release.

Elements of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell deployed to the U.S. Army Europe area of operations Feb. 15 in support of Joint Task Force Dragon, a mission to assure NATO allies and partners in the region.

Soldiers across the installation have been preparing for the deployment since being placed on heightened alert on Jan. 27, and senior leaders are confident in the team’s ability to accomplish the task at hand.

“This is a great team, and great teams excel and thrive during periods of uncertainty,” said Maj. Gen. JP McGee, commanding general, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell, during a briefing ahead of the deployment.

“You’re going to go in there with a great, cohesive team. You’ve got great leadership, and I am looking forward to hearing how you all demonstrate professionalism as you pursue this mission,” he said.

Units from Fort Campbell are joining elements of the XVIII Airborne Corps already deployed to the region, and Command Sgt. Maj. Veronica Knapp, division senior enlisted adviser, encouraged the deploying Soldiers to stay focused on their mission and represent the Army to their fullest extent.

“As you head over to Europe, we’re going kind of into the unknown,” Knapp said. “I’m very proud to be standing here in front of you. I’m proud that we’re sending the right Soldiers out for this mission, and I know you all are going to do an outstanding job.”

The elements headed to Europe include both seasoned Soldiers and those deployed for the first time, like Pv2 Mark Berg Jr.

“[I am] nervous and excited at the same time because I’ve never been overseas before,” Berg said. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve had great leadership, they’ve helped me out a lot. There’s no place I’d rather be as of right now. All the installations have their ups and downs, but so far, I haven’t seen a single down here at Fort Campbell.”

Private First Class Zyan Sweet said his unit has been training on mission-critical skills for months at a time, and he is looking forward to putting them into practice on behalf of his country.

“You have a lot of opportunity, especially here on Fort Campbell, to grow as a person and not just as a Soldier,” Sweet said. “I’ve learned an exponential amount of new things, things I know that I’m good at now, and it’s prepared me a lot, especially for this mission set.”

McGee said maintaining that mindset will be an important factor in the Soldiers’ ability to accomplish their mission.

“You’re going to look back on this period of time for the rest of your life, and you’re going to ask yourself: ‘Did I do everything to support the mission?’” he said. “’ Did I support the chain of command? Did I support my buddy?’ So, it’s really, really critical that you conduct yourselves with the utmost professionalism, stick together as a cohesive team and you’re going to go and you’re going to dominate any mission that’s given to you.”

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) – As officials continue to try to lower the risks from a train derailment and fire in East Palestine, there are still questions as to what caused it.

In a press conference Sunday, the National Transportation Safety Board shared what it believes to be the cause.

“We have obtained two videos which show preliminary indications of mechanical issues on one of the railcar axles,” said National Transportation Safety Board member Michael Graham.

This is known as a hot box, which is a term used for when a wheel bearing overheats on a railcar. In this case, the overheating led to a fire which then led to the derailment.

Former State Rep Bob Hagan retired in 2021 after 50 years in the railroad industry. He says there are hot box detectors that alert conductors to stop the train.

“We have, now, technology that can interpret any time a wheel is hot through that, and it would go via the radio where the engineer would be running the train, the conductor of course would be sitting next to them,” Hagan said.

Graham says the train did drive through one of these detectors shortly before the derailment.

“The crew did receive a wayside defect detector, shortly before the derailment indicating a mechanical issue. Then an emergency break application was initiated,” Graham said.

However, the train was not able to stop in time. In a viewer video, you can see a wheel on fire as the train was still moving, just moments before it derailed.

Hagan says in his 50 years on the job, he only got about 10 hot box alerts in which he had to stop a train. He believes cutbacks on railroad jobs are partially to blame for situations like we’re seeing now in East Palestine.

“When I was working on the railroad, you would have 100 cars which would be about one mile, they’ve doubled those up, sometimes tripled those up. So now you have trains that are three miles long that are impossible to look out the back window when you’re going around a curve to see if anything is on fire,” Hagan said.

During the presser, Graham said the train was carrying 141 load cars, nine empty cars and three locomotives, which are used to pull the train.

NTSB is asking anyone with pictures or videos of the derailment to send them to witness@ntsb.gov.

Derailment Update (#2): Here's the latest I know from very reliable sources. The Norfolk Southern crew was badly injured, engineer realizes he and conductor are lucky to be alive. As the auto rack freight train was coming through Attica, "washout" was evident as the railroad ties were submerged,

ballast (crushed stone) likely washed away. They came around the curve and realized they were in trouble. I'm told it would be like a train's version of hydroplaning in a carthere's nothing they could do. The engine rolled over twice down a large embankment, maybe a 70-80 foot drop I'm told. Engineer was knocked out, woke up to two farmers trying to get them out. As far as injuriesengineer broke leg, ankle and has significant gash on forehead which will require multiple stitches. Source tells me conductor broke shoulder and may have broken back. (Photos sent to me from local volunteer fireman once crew was transported to hospital)
