Moderna said on Feb. 23 that it recently reached a patent agreement with the U.S. government over disputed technology that is featured in its COVID-19 vaccine.

In December 2022, Moderna entered “a nonexclusive patent license agreement” with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said CFO Jamey Mock during an earnings call on Thursday.

The agreement lets the company use “certain patent rights concerning stabilizing prefusion coronavirus spike proteins and the resulting stabilized proteins for the use in COVID-19 vaccine products,” Mock said.

Under the agreement, Moderna sent a “catch-up payment” of $400 million to the NIAID before the new year, according to Moderna executives.

“We have agreed to pay low single-digit royalties on future net sales of our COVID-19 vaccines,” Mock said.

NIAID and its parent agency, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), did not respond to requests for comment.

The Epoch Times has filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the agreement.

NIAID was headed for decades by Dr. Anthony Fauci, who retired around the end of 2022.

The disclosure means the government was paid shortly before telling a court that it, not Moderna, should face a lawsuit over patent infringement.

NIH Says Wrongly Left Off Patent

U.S. government researchers were wrongly left off of a patent filing for a key sequence that’s part of the vaccine, according to government officials.

NIH scientists were working with Moderna for four years on vaccines for diseases before the pandemic started. After COVID-19 emerged, the NIH and Moderna collaborated to develop the COVID-19 vaccine, both parties have said.

But the messenger RNA sequence “was selected exclusively by Moderna scientists using Moderna’s technology and without input of NIAID scientists, who were not even aware of the mRNA sequence until after the patent application had already been filed,” Moderna said in one statement.

NIH officials and Moderna were negotiating over the matter when Moderna said in a patent application that it “reached a good-faith determination” that government scientists did not invent the messenger RNA sequence.

An NIH review concluded that doctors Kizzmekia Corbett, Barney Graham, and John Mascola, who all worked with Moderna while at the NIH, co-invented the sequence, a government official familiar with the situation told The Epoch Times previously.

“The work of Dr. Barney Graham and Kizzmekia Corbett and others stabilized the prefusion spike protein which is used in virtually all, with few exceptions, of the vaccines that are now successful,” Fauci told one congressional hearing.

The scientists were named on several related patents, but not the sequence one.

Moderna changed its stance in December 2021, announcing it was abandoning, at least temporarily, its pursuit of the sequence patent.

“Moderna has taken this action to allow more time for discussions with the NIH. Moderna believes that its scientists invented the specific mRNA sequence at the heart of the patent in question. The company acknowledges that NIH feels equally strongly that its scientists should be listed as co-inventors for their contemporaneous work on the protein sequence,” Moderna said at the time.

Royalty Payments

Research conducted at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services led to more than 4,400 U.S. patents from 1980 to 2019, according to the Government Accountability Office.

The NIH had 2 percent of the patents. Those patents generated up to $2 billion in royalty revenue during the same period of time.

“The NIH provides limited information to the public about its licensing activities. For example, the agency does not report which of its patents are licensed or release metrics that would enable the public to evaluate how licensing affects patient access to resulting drugs,” the office concluded. “Increasing the transparency of its licensing activities could improve the public’s and policymakers’ understanding of NIH’s management of its intellectual property.”

Some of the payments go to individual scientists, including Fauci.

Open the Books, a nonprofit watchdog, obtained documentation of approximately $350 million in royalties going to Fauci and other government scientists from fiscal year 2010 to fiscal year 2020.

Dr. Lawrence Tabak, acting director of the NIH, acknowledged the payments present “an appearance of a conflict of interest,” but claimed there are “substantial and significant” firewalls that mitigate the issue.

It’s week five of the Justice Department’s most high-profile—and high-stakes—criminal trial related to the events of January 6, 2021. Five members of the Proud Boys face the rare “seditious conspiracy” charge. Guilty verdicts—almost certain given the government’s near-perfect conviction rate for January 6 defendants—would build legal momentum for a similar indictment against Donald Trump. (Thetrial is so crucial that Matthew Graves, the Biden-appointed U.S. attorneyfor the District of Columbia responsible for prosecuting every January 6 case, has shown up in the courtroom on at least three occasions.)

Trump is a major figure in this trial, an unindicted coconspirator of sorts. Last week, Judge Timothy Kelly allowed prosecutors to play a clip of Trump’s extemporaneous comment for the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by”—a remark uttered during a presidential debate in September 2020 more than three months before the Capitol protest. The Justice Department wants to portray the comment as a call to arms, tying the alleged “militia” group to the former president.

The clip is just another thin reed of evidence in the government’s landmark domestic terrorism case. In fact, much of the “evidence” amounts to nothing more than worthless trinkets, braggadocious group chats, and otherwise protected political speech. It now appears that one key piece of evidence was not the work of any defendant in this case but ratherwritten by a one-time government intelligence assetwith unusual ties to both the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, another group involved in January 6.

A document titled “1776 Returns” is cited by the government to indicate the group had an advanced plan to “attack” the Capitol. In two separate criminal indictments, prosecutors explained how the document ended up in the hands of Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys: “On December 30, 2020 [an unnamed] individual sent Tarrio a document—[that] set forth a plan to occupy a few ‘crucial buildings’ in Washington, D.C. on January 6, including House and Senate buildings around the Capitol, with ‘as many people as possible’ to ‘show our politicians We the People are in charge.’”

Calling the document a “high-level summary,” a prosecutor last week combed through each page of “1776 Returns” with an expert witness even though thegovernment conceded there was no proof Tarrio opened the file or shared itwith others.

“The plan, essentially, is to have individuals inside these buildings, either cause a distraction, or—pull fire alarms in other parts of the city to distract law enforcement so that a crowd can then rush the buildings and occupy the interior so they can demand a new election,” FBI Agent Peter Dubrowski told the jury.In other words, an “insurrection!”

But a bombshell motion filed over the weekend debunks the Justice Department’s suggestion that the document was a product, or at least a roadmap, used to guide the group’s conduct on January 6. The filing suggests that thehandling of “1776 Returns,” like so much of January 6, was yet another sting operation.

“It appears that thegovernment itself is the authorof the most incriminating and damning document in this case, which was mysteriously sent at government request to Proud Boy leader Enrique Tarrio immediately prior to January 6 in order to frame or implicate Tarrio in a government created scheme to storm buildings around the Capitol,” wrote Roger Roots, attorney for Dominic Pezzola, in the motion seeking a mistrial. “As such, [the document] and the government’s efforts to frame or smear defendants with it, constitutes outrageous government conduct.”

Turns out, the person responsible for preparing the document is a man named Samuel Armes, a young cryptocurrency expert living in Florida. But Armes’ résumé raises many red flags, particularly in a case involving the use of multiple government informants. Armes told the January 6 select committee last year thathe has worked for the State Department and Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. “A lot of the work that I did for the government was in counterthreat finance or regulatory environments around crypto,” he testified.

As a student at the University of Southern Florida, Armes was enrolled in a special program that prepared graduates for a career in the intelligence sector. Armes told House investigatorshe was “groomed to be in the CIA, FBI, or any intel agencies.” When asked to clarify what that meant, Armes explained he was “trained and educated” to eventually work as an intelligence asset.

Part of that training required preparing different responses to potential terror threats. And Armes was no slouch. “I reported under Colonel [Joshua] Potter’s counterthreat finance unit. And I actually developed for them critical research on cryptocurrency that may have been used by drug cartels or ISIS. And so I did similar scenarios with them, wargaming scenarios, of why these terrorist groups might be using cryptocurrency and how they might go about doing so.”

That background in “war games” apparently motivated Armes to do the same before January 6. After reading reports about the Transition Integrity Project, a collection of high-level Trump foes plotting to remove Trump from office regardless of the election’s outcome, Armes said he felt compelled to perform his own “worst case scenario.”

Hence the “1776 Returns” paper.

But Armes’ explanation as to why he put thoughts on paper is strange, to say the least. His reasons for “brainstorming,” as he called it, what might happen after the election veered from the Terry Schiavo case—“when government authorities are kind of confused and people don’t know who to obey or who to answer to, anarchy kind of breaks out, and certain parties take advantage of that anarchy,” he said of the protracted legal battle over the famous right-to-die case two decades ago—to Trump’s unpredictability, to the 2020 summer riots, to total anarchy in the streets.

Even more odd is that his internal “brainstorming” document ended up in the inbox of Erica Flores, a business associate in Florida—who just happened to be Tarrio’s girlfriend at the time. “I had told her that I was kind of brainstorming what I think might happen, and she seemed interested. And she asked if she could see it, and I said sure. And so I ended up sharing it with her on a Google Drive.”

Flores then sent the document to Tarrio.

Flores’ version of events, however, is quite different from Armes’ account. While he disputed being the sole author of the document, Flores reportedly told the January 6 committee that Armes wrote the whole thing. Further, contrary to Armes’ testimony to the committee, she said Armes told her to send it to Tarrio.

For now, it’s unclear whether the public, or more importantly, the defendants, will learn the truth about the origins of the “1776 Returns” missive. Armes admitted he cannot find the original document in his Google files. And although Flores spoke with the January 6 committee, her transcript is not publicly available, buried with hundreds more at the National Archives.

That’s not the end of Armes’ weird story; he also was in contact with a member of the Oath Keepers in 2020. Armes’ name showed up on a hotel reservation for James Beeks, now on trial in D.C. for his participation in the January 6 Capitol protest. When House investigators asked Armes why Beeks included his name on the same hotel room, Armes claimed the man had a romantic interest in him.

Armes also admitted he and Beeks had many conversations before January 6 on topics such as the election and domestic politics. But just like Armes’ original “1776” document, those messages are missing, too.

As evidence piles up to show how federal assets played an animating role before and on January 6, Armes’ weird account—and background in government intelligence—cannot be dismissed as coincidence.

The Department of the Air Force will conduct its next “BRAVO” hackathon March 20 – 24, 2023, this time at Hurlburt Field, Florida.

Any American citizen may apply, regardless of whether they currently work for the Department of the Air Force. Applicants are required to apply online here. Applicants are being accepted on a rolling basis.

Attendees are not required to hold a security clearance. However, certain spaces, use cases, and datasets may require a U.S. secret security clearance or higher. Organizers may request additional information for clearances that applicants possess. Applicants may apply as an employee for the U.S. government, a U.S. government contractor, or a U.S. citizen either affiliated or unaffiliated with a company.

A hackathon is an innovation event commonly employed by technology companies in which teams develop prototypes working around the clock in response to enterprise challenges associated with data. Prior BRAVO projects have produced multiple prototypes and inventions influencing major Defense Department programs.

Federal government employees and federal contractors representing federal organizations are encouraged to share sponsoring use cases, data, or infrastructure relevant to the primary mission of the Department of Defense for use at this event by contacting SAF.CN.BRAVO@us.af.mil.

“Across the previous hackathons, we have honed methods to build and fight with classified and protected data of increasingly larger size and varied origin,” said Stuart Wagner, chief digital transformation officer for the U.S. Department of the Air Force and hackathon organizer. “Hurlburt Field will prototype joint use cases, data and software infrastructures from combatant commands and various military departments.”

In January 2022, the department ran BRAVO 0, its first department-wide classified innovation hackathon with Air Force weapons system data at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. BRAVO 1 Canary Release grew the effort when in July 2022, the department ran its second hackathon simultaneously at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia; Patrick Space Force Base, Florida; and Eglin AFB, Florida, with about 300 hackers.

BRAVO allows participants to rapidly commingle and run open-source software and data otherwise unapproved for production with classified or protected data.

“BRAVO moves from the traditional DoD development model operating at the unclassified level where we push code up to protected environments, to a permissive development model on protected data, which we refer to as ‘Dev High,’” Wagner said. “This enables developers to build weapons’ capabilities and calibrations directly with the data at lower cost compared to traditional prototyping pipelines and at a rate faster than an adversary is likely to build countering capability. This event will test how ‘Dev High’ scales to joint multi-domain use cases.”

Applicants looking to participate may do so in one of three roles. The “Hacker” role is open to all applicants and expects project builders with varying skill sets and experience, including software development, data science, machine learning, design and user interface/user design, data visualization, product management or warfighter subject matter expertise.

The “Subject Matter Expert” role is open only to government and government contractors and supports multiple teams with specific expertise or knowledge about a use case or dataset offered at the event. Any federal organization is eligible to supply a use case or dataset for consideration.

The “Supporter” role is open only to government and government contractors and provides administrative support to the event by running security, facilitating supplies delivery, organizing social events, and facilitating the delivery of science fair materials and attendee check-in.

Organizations providing infrastructure support include the “STITCHES” Warfighter Application Team, the Navy Project Overmatch program, Project Arc, Office of the Secretary of Defense Advana Edge and Air Force Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office. All five U.S. military services and U.S. Special Operations Command provide use cases and data.

The BRAVO hackathon series is named after “Project B,” a 1921 series of joint Army-Navy target exercises based on Army Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell’s then-controversial claim that bombers sink battleships. Also styled after Project B, BRAVO hackathons are designed to allow government, academia, industry and citizens to test and validate bold ideas using real DoD data, Wagner said.

The Dire Significance of Putin’s Feb 21 Speech

On Tuesday, February 21st President Putin gave a speech that was expected to be very significant. After it was delivered, however, most pundits said he didn’t say anything we didn’t already know. Most of them focused on his announcement of the withdrawal from the START II treaty. However, he said something far more significant.

An Existential Threat

What Mr. Putin said, when read through the lens of international law, should be chilling to the West.

We would do well to remember that Mr. Putin majored in international law. His speech made a legal case against NATO.

First he listed, by my count, 30 different ways in which the Western nations have attacked Russia. These included the expansion of NATO to Russia’s borders, support of terrorists in Russia, economic war, terrorist sabotage of the Nordstream Pipeline, financing of the coup and war in Ukraine, directly assisting Ukraine to attack targets in Russia including Russia’s nuclear bombers, and plotting to destroy and partition Russia into pieces.

Nestled in the middle of these was an important statement.

“This means they plan to finish us once and for all. In other words, they plan to grow a local conflict into a global confrontation. This is how we understand it and we will respond accordingly, because this represents an existential threat to our country.”

Putin’s choice of words is extremely significant in light of Russian nuclear doctrine, which states that nuclear weapons could be used by Russia “in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons of mass destruction against it or its allies, and also in case of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is threatened.”

Among the 30 points of evidence of the American war on Russia, Mr. Putin listed several cases of American use of conventional weapons against Russian territory through Ukraine as the thinly veiled proxy, and stated that this represents an “existential threat to [the Russian State].”

What Mr. Putin has just told us is that the Kremlin now considers nuclear use condition #2 to be true, today.

This statement was accompanied by two related actions. The day before the speech Russia tested a Sarmat II ICBM. And at the end of the speech, Mr. Putin announced that Russia shall immediately withdraw from the START II treaty, which limits the number and range of their nuclear missiles.

These three statements and events together should tell the collective West that Russia has just said “Get off my porch!”, and cocked the forty-five.

This doesn’t mean that Russia is going to strike the USA tomorrow morning. But, we are definitely now teetering on the cliff’s edge of nuclear war.

Nuclear Offense and Defense

Mr. Putin has previously said that nobody can win a nuclear war, and it is a war that should never be fought. However, behind the scenes Russia had been furiously preparing to survive just such a war, which they hope to avoid.

Russia has developed and deployed the S-500 and S-550 air defenses which are primarily designed to shoot down intercontinental ballistic missiles in space before they can release their multiple warheads upon re-entry. Each S-500 battery is capable of simultaneously tracking and destroying 10 ICBMs in the early to mid flight stages.

The S-300 and S-400 batteries armed with the new 77N6-N and 77N6-N1 anti-ballistic missiles are also capable of shooting down ICBM warheads after re-entry at shorter ranges than the S-500.

These systems create an onion of defensive rings around key Russian cities and military bases. In the event of a nuclear exchange the S-500 would target the incoming ICBMs while still in space at a range of 600 kilometers, and outside the borders of Russia; and the S-400 and S-300 batteries would target any deployed warheads that managed to get through. Obviously, preventing as many enemy missiles as possible from being launched would improve the chances of successful defense.

AFGSC Commander approves formal assessment to investigate missile community cancer concerns

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. – Gen. Thomas A. Bussiere, commander, Air Force Global Strike Command, approved a comprehensive study design by the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine to conduct a formal assessment that addresses specific cancer concerns raised by missile community members across related career fields and also examines the possibility of clusters of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at intercontinental ballistic missile bases.

"Air Force Global Strike Command and our Air Force takes the responsibility to protect Airman and Guardians incredibly seriously, and their safety and health continues to be my priority,” said Bussiere. “We also continue to be committed to remaining transparent during this process and we pledge to continue to maintain an open dialogue with members, their families and stakeholders throughout this process.”

The study will have two study teams and be divided into multiple pieces allowing for a better focus on specific needs, prioritization of the study focuses, and enables the best use of resources and time.

“Both parts of the study (evaluating NHL or multiple cancer sites) will follow a phased approach,” said Col. Tony Woodard, USAFSAM commander. “Phase 1 is separated into three parts due to requests from different sources that house potential case identification data. Each of these sources is owned by different agencies that will have variable processing times.”

This study design affords the shortest overall timeline while maximizing relevant information. This also ensures a comprehensive look across multiple Air Force Specialty Codes, locations and possible additional cancers.

“Once each study is completed, each team will then move to the next study in the sequence,” Woodard said. “Some data overlap will occur potentially saving time with future study completion.”

It is still too early to tell exactly how long the study will take, according to the AFGSC Surgeon General, Col. Lee D. Williames. He said phase one will include Department of Defense medical data, analyzed DoD and Department of Veterans Affairs Cancer Registry data/VA medical data. Phase two includes investigating mortality data and evaluate cancer registries.

In addition, there are different data sources for study phases, Williames said.

Data will be requested simultaneously, but analysis for each can be performed independently of each other, Woodard said.

Phase 2 of the study will be conducted if Phase 1 does not show an elevation in cancer incidence (occurrence) or mortality (death) risk, Woodard said.

“If, at any point, an elevation in either cancer incidence or in cancer mortality above expected rates is noted, further phase progression will end, leadership will be notified, and the study team will move to the next study,” Woodard said.

Woodard also noted the team charged with this extraordinarily important responsibility is a highly experienced team that previously completed the USAFSAM’s Fighter Aviator Cancer Study. In addition, he highlighted the existing synergy available to the team as USAFSAM already maintains access to DHA and AFPC databases, saving significant request processing time that could be accrued in working with outside agencies.

“Our top-notch professionals are uniquely positioned within the DoD and DHA enterprise to conduct this analysis efficiently and effectively,” Woodard said, noting USAFSAM also has a number of critical pre-built relationships with outside partners who can assist in this vital effort including the Air Force Personnel Center, the Defense Health Agency Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division, the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“As we move through the various phases of assessment and review, we will continue to provide updates, including pertinent information, as and when such information is discovered or identified,” Bussiere said. “While we continue to work through this process, service members, their family members and former service members who may have concerns or questions are encouraged to speak with their healthcare providers."

The S-500 was deployed in 2021 to protect Moscow and went into mass production in 2022. So it is very possible that Russia has quietly installed a comprehensive missile defense shield. However, we don’t have enough information to know whether it could be perfectly effective against hundreds of ICBMs at once. Given the maximum launch of 640 ICBMs by NATO, a total of sixty-four S-500 batteries would be required in order to intercept them all.

Due to missile reduction treaties since 1990, NATO’s nuclear triad consists of about 400 Minuteman III ICBMs, 240 submarine-launched Trident II ICBM’s, plus a few hundred B61 nuclear bombs carried by the sixty B1 and B2 heavy bombers in NATO’s air force.

If Russia’s ICBM defenses could take out 90% of 640 incoming missiles, it could survive a nuclear exchange at the cost of absorbing hits from about 50 warheads that got through. Given the smaller modern warheads in NATO’s missile forces, it would do terrible but localized damage. Moscow would probably experience massive damage, but the rest of Russian territory would be fine.

NATO’s nuclear offense forces rely on aging Trident II and Minuteman III ICBMs. The majority of these systems are over thirty years old. This means they will probably have a significant failure rate just to launch. Russia’s modern air defenses and ECM have been designed to defeat these old technologies.

In balance to the effort to perfect defenses against ICBMs, Mr. Putin announced that Russia’s nuclear forces have been 91% modernized. That means that the ICBMs that Russia would fire all have maneuverable hypersonic warheads. US air defenses are currently unable to defend against these.

The spacing of American Minuteman silos was designed for the majority to survive a first strike and launch retaliation. However, Russian maneuverable hypersonic multiple re-entry vehicles nullify this defense if the targeting data is accurate. Russia has to accurately hit 400 ground targets in the first strike to nullify a response.

The 240 submarine launched Trident missiles would be the primary threat to defend against. Thus a first strike could reduce the number of expected retaliation missiles by 62%.

NATO’s aging heavy bomber fleet is unlikely to be able to penetrate Russian air defenses. While these bombers were constantly kept in the air at the peak of the cold war, that is no longer the case.

A first strike would make it unlikely that the bombers and refuelers could get off the ground in time to effectively respond.

Russia currently has a window of superiority in both nuclear offense and defense that NATO is rapidly trying to close. It is not in Russia’s interest to allow NATO to close the technology gap in air defense and ICBM offense.

The world is now on the threshold of nuclear war. Russia keeps warning the West. The West keeps ignoring the warnings and doubling down. The immovable object is meeting the unstoppable force.

Three important things have changed since the Cold War which have changed the probability of a nuclear exchange.

Nuclear proliferation means that MAD can be bypassed if the identity of the first attacker is uncertain to the target. A missile that appears from an unexpected direction may not have been launched by the most obvious suspect.

MAD depends on both parties being rational actors. The West ceased to be rational when they destroyed Nordstream.

Russia may now have an effective missile defense shield, while NATO does not.

The Russian Method Projected Forward

Just as in December 2021 when Russia asked NATO for security guarantees, Russia follows the letter of the law and procedure. They gave NATO the opportunity to back down or negotiate. When they were rebuffed, Russia intervened militarily in Ukraine, about 70 days after the initial demand for negotiation with NATO.

Following the same method, in 2023, Russia has just made the legal case that the USA and NATO are at war with Russia and pose an existential threat to Russia’s existence.

It seems likely to me that in the coming weeks Russia’s ally, China, will offer a peace deal which freezes the Ukraine conflict within the current lines of contact, i.e. Ukraine conceding lost territory to Russia.

If the West rejects the offered peace, which seems fairly likely, then all of the conditions for a nuclear war will be in place. All it will take is a new provocation by NATO to trigger a first strike by Russia. Or worse, if both parties realize this is the case, both will have the incentive to strike first.

In the next 360 days we are in greater danger of a nuclear exchange between Russia and NATO than we have ever before seen. There is a 60 to 90 day window remaining for this outcome to be avoided. Let us pray that God will turn the hearts of the Western leaders away from the suicidal folly they have embraced.

When Was Cannabis Classified as a Schedule I Drug?

Back in the 1970s, US President Richard Nixon was amidst the global campaign known as “The War on Drugs,” which aimed to reduce illegal drug trade in the United States. The campaign focused on preventing problematic drug use, alcohol abuse, as well as drug abuse disorders.

The first step in this fight was the United States Congress passing the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) that became effective on May 1st, 1971. This act classified cannabis as a Schedule I substance under federal law, with a “high potential of abuse and no accepted medical use” along with heroin, ecstasy, and GHB.

To handle the enforcement of the drug schedule, Nixon established the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) with the intent of replacing other federal agencies which carried out anti-drug policies like the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and the Bureau of Drug Abuse Control.

After the passing of the CSA schedules, some people believed that the prohibition of cannabis should be ended in favor of public health since cannabis has some medical benefits. However, it took a while until new legalization laws were passed in relation to medical cannabis.

The Federal Drug Scheduling System

After Congress passed the Controlled Substance Act, the DEA was responsible for enforcing the drug schedule. While the system has been modified since the ’70s, some of the drugs are still in the same category as they were back then.

This system classifies drugs, substances, and chemicals by scheduling them into 5 categories based on the drug’s acceptable medical use, abuse, and dependency potential. Schedule I drugs have the highest abuse potential, as well as the highest potential for creating a psychological or physical dependence, while Schedule V drugs have the least potential for abuse or dependence.

Marijuana (cannabis);

Heroin;

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD);

The U.S. State Department unveiled a new refugee program, “Welcome Corps,” in January, which enables private sponsorship of refugees. Historically, the State Department primarily partnered with nonprofit resettlement agencies to resettle refugees. Given the war in Ukraine, along with the commitment to assisting Afghan allies and other nationals fleeing violence and oppression, the Biden administration called for the expansion of the refugee settlement program and created a path for U.S. citizens and legal residents to sponsor privately refugees seeking protection in the U.S.

Through Welcome Corps, U.S. citizens and legal residents can apply to form Private Sponsor Organizations to welcome refugees. Each group must have a minimum of five members, and each member must be over the age of 18 and either a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident.

Sponsors are required to raise at least $2,275 for each refugee and commit to providing welcoming services and essential services in the community, including housing, financial support, and guidance to healthcare, education and employment services, for 90 days.

Welcome Corps will be led through a consortium of nonprofit organizations with experience in existing refugee resettlement programs. The consortium will be tasked with overseeing the private sponsor application process, providing sponsors with the necessary training, and monitoring the progress of the program to ensure privately sponsored refugees are getting the support they need.

The program seeks to enable 10,000 U.S. citizens and legal residents to provide assistance as private sponsors in welcoming at least 5,000 refugees during the first year. Refugees admitted under the Welcome Corps initiative will initially be eligible for employment authorization and will have a path to obtain legal resident status and, ultimately, U.S. citizenship.

Former FBI counterintelligence chief Peter Strzok in 2019 filed a lawsuit against the FBI and DOJ over his firing claiming the decision was based on “unrelenting pressure” from President Trump.

Peter Strzok, a key FBI agent in the Russia investigation was caught sending anti-Trump text messages to his paramour FBI lawyer Lisa Page and subsequently removed from the special counsel’s team in the summer of 2017.

Peter Strzok was fired from the FBI in 2018.

Federal Judge Amy Berman Jackson agreed to allow Peter Strzok and Lisa Page to depose Trump and Wray.

A federal judge has agreed to permit former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page to take sworn testimony from former President Donald Trump for two hours as part of their long-running lawsuits related to Strzok’s firing in 2018 after Trump repeatedly and publicly pilloried the pair.

U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled on Thursday that Strzok and Page — whose text messages disparaging then-candidate Trump cast a pall over the FBI’s investigation of links between the Trump campaign and Russia — would also be allowed to depose FBI Director Christopher Wray for a similar two-hour period on a limited set of topics.

But there’s a twist: Their ability to ask Trump and Wray about these circumstances might come down to a decision from President Joe Biden. Jackson’s order gave the Justice Department a month to “inform the Court whether the current President will invoke … executive privilege” over any aspects of Trump’s testimony.

Jackson, an appointee of President Barack Obama, also stressed that she had not yet considered all potential objections to the demands for testimony from Trump and Wray. That could include arguments by Trump that he has the unilateral right as a former president to assert executive privilege.

Reports are emerging of a possible attack on a military facility in the city of Karaj on Thursday night, at a moment tensions are boiling between Tehran and Israel over the Islamic Republic's advancing nuclear program.

The BBC’s Persian-language service reported that widespread gunshots and and explosions were observed in the area, which lies just west of the Iranian capital. Anti-aircraft fire was also seen in multiple circulating clips, which remain unverified.

However, the Iranian government is denying that it was a hostile attack from a foreign force, instead calling it a live-fire defense exercise.

Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency tweeted a video describing military training in the area.

Israeli media has also picked up on the claims of an attack, while noting that a key nuclear facility is located in Karaj. As The Jerusalem Post recounts:

Bloomberg reported Sunday that Iran has currently reached an 84% uranium enrichment level, a new high. While Iran has all long claimed it is only for peaceful nuclear energy purposes, the number needed for achieving an atomic bomb is 90%.

Steve Bannon’s lawyers claim he owes them almost $500,000 in legal fees

Steve Bannon, a former adviser to Donald Trump, has been sued for more than $480,000 by a New York law firm. Davidoff Hutcher & Citron represented Bannon in a series of contentious courtroom battles, which he insists were politically motivated.

Filed in a New York state court last Friday, the lawsuit seeks the payment of an outstanding balance of $480,487 for legal services provided to Bannon between November 2020 and November 2022. The firm claims that Bannon ran up a bill of more than $855,000, of which he has paid $375,000.

The firm represented Bannon when he was accused in 2020 of defrauding donors who contributed to a fundraising campaign aimed at building a wall along the US-Mexico border. In the lawsuit, Davidoff Hutcher & Citron claim that they helped Bannon secure a pardon from Trump to dismiss these charges before Trump left office in January 2021.

The company also represented Bannon when he was charged with contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the Democrat-led House committee investigating the pro-Trump riot on Capitol Hill in 2021. Bannon was found guilty of contempt last October and given a four-month prison sentence, which he has appealed.

A US Navy veteran and former investment banker, Bannon co-founded Breitbart News in 2007. He left the conservative news site in 2016 to lead Trump’s election campaign, and was appointed chief strategist and senior counselor to the president following Trump’s defeat of Hillary Clinton. He left the position eight months later and returned to political punditry.

Bannon described the contempt proceedings as a “show trial,” telling reporters outside the courtroom in October that he was being punished for standing “with Trump and the constitution.”

Although Trump’s pardon resulted in the dismissal of the 2020 fraud case against Bannon, it was taken up again last September by New York Attorney General Letitia James, an outspoken opponent of Trump. Bannon is facing six criminal charges, including fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering.

Russian spy ring in Australia busted after major counter espionage operation

A Russian spy ring in Australia operated in the country for more than 18 months before it was broken in a counter espionage operation by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO).

The Australian domestic intelligence service spent months tracking the spies and ensured they did not suspect they were being watched, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Sources with knowledge of the ASIO operation say some of the Russian agents posed as diplomatic and consular staff while others used deep cover identities.

They operated from a number of locations, including the Russian embassy in Canberra, sources said, before they were forced out of Australia.

Their goal was to recruit Australians with access to confidential information and steal data using advanced technology.

ASIO director-general Mike Burgess on Tuesday described the spy ring but did not name Russia.

His mention of the Russian spy ring came as he warned Australia faces an unprecedented threat of espionage and foreign interference with more Australians being targeted by agents than ever before.

Multiple nations were using espionage and foreign interference to advance their interests and undermine ASIO efforts.

"They are using espionage to covertly understand Australia's politics and decision-making, our alliances and partnerships, and our economic and policy priorities," Burgess said.

"Based on what ASIO is seeing, more Australians are being targeted for espionage and foreign interference than at any time in Australia's history – more hostile foreign intelligence services, more spies, more targeting, more harm, more ASIO investigations, more ASIO disruptions."

Trail of Funding for AI ‘Machine Learning Fairness’ Leads to Leftist Billionaires Omidyar, Hoffman, Soros

This week we examined the field of Machine Learning Fairness, which seeks to imprint AI programs with leftist assumptions and priorities. Following the money behind the leading organizations of ML Fairness leads to some familiar funding sources, including leftist billionaires Pierre Omidyar, George Soros, and Reid Hoffman.

One of the most well-funded efforts to control AI is the Ethics and Governance of AI Initiative, a joint project of the MIT Media Lab and Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Media & Society.

By 2017, the initiative had raised $26 million from various sources that played a prominent role in pushing the “disinformation” panic, including Pierre Omidyar’s Luminate, the Knight Foundation, and the notoriously leftist tech bro Reid Hoffman, whose sinister election-influencing activities have been well documented.

Both the MIT Media Lab and the Berkman Klein Center were heavily involved in the disinformation panic, and have been involved in controversies. Joi Ito, the president of the MIT lab, had to resign in 2019 after it was revealed that the organization accepted donations from Jeffrey Epstein.

The Berkman Klein Center, meanwhile, was for years the pulpit of Dr. Joan Donovan, a partisan Democrat who used the disinformation panic to cast doubt on the Hunter Biden “laptop from hell” story.

The priorities of the Ethics and Governance of AI Initiative are similarly leftist — it aims to bring the values of ESG and wokeness to AI. Its mission statement is to “ensure that technologies of automation and machine learning are researched, developed, and deployed in a way which vindicates social values of fairness, human autonomy, and justice.”

In 2017, the Initiative hosted an “AI and Inclusion” summit with financial support from George Soros’ Open Society Foundations and others. In 2019, it gave out six-figure sum awards to projects aimed at stopping the use of AI to “spread disinformation.” Clearly, the priorities of the MIT Media Lab and the Berkman Klein Center are the same as ever.

Another organization to keep an eye on is the AI Now Institute, which is backed by Lumiate, an Omidyar organization, as well as the Ford and MacArthur foundations.

The AI Now Institute was perhaps the first organization to make ML Fairness its sole focus, and its priorities are predictably woke: making sure AIs don’t get too effective in fields like criminal background checks, and making sure it gets very effective at promoting leftist causes like the Green New Deal.

The co-founder of the AI Now Institute, Meredith Whittaker, worked at Google for several years before moving to the FTC under Biden and then the Signal Foundation.
