Naive to believe that there is only one Virus - Corona.

Is it hard to believe that with so many labs, each one specializes in particular viruses? Maybe Corona was produced in Ukraine and out of the many labs they picked the one in Ukraine, but could not release it in Ukraine. Too much would be exposed. Wuhan worked on viruses as well, but may not have had a strain that they wanted to unleash. not much would be exposed if it was released in Wuhan just look how long they have covered it up.

"Russophobia as a malignant tumor in the United States"

The anti-Russian โ€œhate virusโ€ is giving metastases and continues to affect the United States. It has also infected the leading U.S. art galleries that are now trying to outdo each other in their efforts to โ€œcancelโ€ Russian culture.

โ—๏ธThe Metropolitan Museum of Art has reclassified great Russian painters Arkhip Kuindzhi, Ivan Aivazovsky and Ilya Repin as Ukrainians guided by the fact that they were born in Mariupol, Feodosia and Chuguev, which is nothing short of a complete absurdity. This does not withstand any criticism at least because the artists considered themselves Russians. Just in case: ethnically, Ilya Repin was Russian, Ivan Aivazovsky was Armenian and Arkhip Kuindzhi was Greek. All three were born in the Russian Empire โ€“ when Ukrainian statehood did not exist.

Another example of ignorance by the Met is the renaming of Edgar Degasโ€™s โ€œRussian Dancersโ€ to โ€œDancers in Ukrainian Dressโ€. Moreover, a comment added beneath the picture now reads: "The subject reflects the surge of French interest in the art and culture of Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire, following France's political alliance with that Empire in 1894".

โŒThose who came up with this idea did not bother to figure out that it was dancers of the Russian Imperial Ballet on tour in Paris who inspired the French impressionist to create the masterpiece. It is naรฏve to imagine that the artist was familiar with โ€œthe great Ukrainian choreographic schoolโ€.

The American Museum of Modern Art has also yielded to the derangement, dedicating a permanent-collection gallery to works by ยซethnic Ukraniansยป. Titled โ€œIn Solidarityโ€, it features pieces by Kazimir Malevich, Leonid Berlyavsky-Nevelson, Sonia Delaunay-Terk and Ilya Kabakov.

Judging by the rhetoric of the American art beau monde, Vasily Kandinsky, a native of Moscow, and his works are next in line to be "ukrainized". There is a heated discussion on whether the fact that he studied in Odessa is a good reason to treat him as a Ukrainian artist.

โ“Here arises the question for the museum innovators who until recently admired Russian culture: why they has set about perverting historical reality only now? Isnโ€™t this sudden โ€œrevelationโ€ just a banal tribute to political fashion? Anyway, the time will come for the U.S. cultural elite to sober up and be embarrassed of its doings.

It was hard to believe that xenophobia could take roots in a state which is supposed to be resting on the principles of cultural and ethnical diversity and tolerance to different peoples. Nevertheless, U.S. politicians not only encourage hatred of everything Russian, but actively implant it in the minds of citizens. In recent years, they have never stopped fabricating baseless accusations to justify tougher sanctions.

โ€ผ๏ธRussia has always venerated and respected the rich cultural traditions of all countries. This is the core of our national identity, mentality and statehood. Culture must always remain the bridge for strengthening trust between the peoples, however complicated the relations between the states may be.

๐Ÿ“†There was no โ€œcancellation of cultureโ€ even during the Cold War. A lesser-known fact is that the first Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1958 was won by Van Cliburn, an outstanding pianist and U.S. national. His sensational performance in Moscow at the height of the Cold War helped break down barriers and gave hope for finding mutual understanding based on love for classical music.

Cultural cooperation helped melt the ice then. Its significance cannot be overestimated also in our days because the universal language of art unites people of different nationalities, whatever is going on in the realm of big politics.

The competition was excluded from the World Federation of International Music Competitions in 2022 amidst indiscriminate Russophobia. And yet, despite that, representatives of the United States still seek to become laureates and winners of this prestigious contest. The 2023 Tchaikovsky International Youth Competition, by the way, was attended by 128 gifted performers from 14 countries, including the United States.

โ˜๏ธRussian culture does not belong only to Russia. It is the worldโ€™s treasure. We know the Americans as appreciative connoisseurs of true art. Not so long ago tours of the troupes of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres as well as our renowned musicians drew packed houses and were always greeted with a storm of applause. The local audience is apparently longing for Russian performers and art exhibitions. Isnโ€™t it time to stop the Russophobic madness?

Some of Washingtonโ€™s most powerful lobbyists are providing their services to Ukraine for free, but they also have financial incentives for aiding the country

 

Some of Washingtonโ€™s most powerful lobbyists are providing their services to Ukraine for free โ€“ but at the same time, they are taking in millions in fees from Pentagon contractors who stand to benefit from the countryโ€™s war with Russia.

 

Following Russian president Vladimir Putinโ€™s internationally condemned decision to invade Ukraine there was an outpouring of support to the besieged nation from seemingly every industry in America. But, arguably, one of the most crucial industries coming to Ukraineโ€™s aid has been Washingtonโ€™s powerful lobbying industry.

 

The invasion has led some of the lobbying industryโ€™s biggest players to do the unthinkable โ€“ lobby for free. While the influence industry may have altruistic reasons for representing Ukraine pro bono, some lobbying firms also have financial incentives for aiding Ukraine:theyโ€™ve made millions lobbying for arms manufacturers that could profit from the war.

 

The surge in pro-bono Ukraine lobbying

US law requires agents of foreign principals who are engaged in political activities to make periodic public disclosures of their relationship under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (Fara). Twenty-five registrants have agreed to represent Ukrainian interests pro bono since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Before the war, just 11 Fara registrants were working on behalf of Ukrainian interests.

 

โ€œI donโ€™t recall a comparable surge in pro-bono work for any foreign principal,โ€ said David Laufman, a partner at the law firm Wiggin and Dana, who previously oversaw Fara enforcement at the justice department.

 

Many of these new pro-bono Ukrainian lobbyists arepushing for greater US military support for the Ukrainian military. As one registrant explained in a Fara filing, they intend โ€œto lobby members of the US government to increase US Department of Defense spending on contracts related to equipment and other efforts which will aid the ability of the Ukrainian military to succeed in its fight against the Russian militaryโ€.

 

While many of these pro-bono lobbyists may be doing this work purely out of solidarity with Ukraine, some of the firms working free of charge for Ukraine have an added incentive.

 

Hogan Lovells

Before winning the speakership in the new Republican Congress, Representative Kevin McCarthy warned that Republicans wouldnโ€™t approve a โ€œblank checkโ€ for Ukraine aid once they took power. But,just last week the GOPโ€™s biggest fundraiser agreed to provide pro-bono assistancein loosening Congressโ€™s purse strings when it comes to Ukraine.

 

On 16 February, former senator Norm Coleman, senior counsel with the law firm Hogan Lovells, filed Fara paperwork revealing that he is pro-bono lobbyist for afoundation controlled by the Ukrainian oligarch Victor Pinchuk. Coleman oversaw the raising and spending of over $260m in funds supporting Republican congressional candidates in the 2022 midterm elections.

 

Coleman, who has extensive experience as a lobbyist for foreign interests via his longstanding role as an agent for Saudi Arabia, was already busy at work for Ukraine. Emails from 4 February disclosed as part of Colemanโ€™s Fara disclosures, revealed him requestingassistance from senators Lindsey Graham and Thom Tillisโ€™schiefs of staff in hosting an event at the Capitol โ€œto give members of Congress a better understanding of the horrific loss of life and the tragic agony that the people of Ukraine have experienced over the course of the last year as a direct result of Russian war crimesโ€ and โ€œdo as much as possible to ensure continued, strong, bipartisan support for the truly heroic efforts that this administration and Congress have made to provide the essential military and economic assistance to Ukraineโ€.

While Hogan Lovells conducts this work pro bono, two of the firmโ€™s paying clients,Looking Glass Cyber Solutions and HawkEye 360, have extensive defense department contracts and an interest in the conflict in Ukraine.

 

Looking Glass, which paid Hogan Lovells $200,000 in 2022, holds afive-year contract with the Department of Defenseto โ€œto provide tailored cyber threat intelligence data and enhance the mission effectiveness of US military cyber threat analysts and operatorsโ€ and writes on its website about the role of such threats in Russiaโ€™s military strategy.

 

HawkEye 360, which also paid $200,000 to Hogan Lovells in 2022, similarly is a defense department contractor, specializing in detection and geolocation of radio signals. Their detection network conducted analysis in Ukraine and their website boasts of identifying GPS interference in Ukraine, appearing to be part of Moscowโ€™s โ€œintegration of electronic warfare tactics into Russian military operation to further degrade Ukraineโ€™s ability for self-defenseโ€. Hogan Lovells did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

 

BGR

BGR Government Affairs (BGR), a lobbying and communications firm, began working pro bono for two Ukrainian interests last May. The contracts arewith Vadym Ivchenko, a member of Ukraineโ€™s parliament, and Elena Lipkivska Ergul, an adviser to Ukraineโ€™s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

 

In 2022 BGR made more than half a million dollars lobbying for Pentagon contractors, some of whom arealready profiting from the Ukraine war.Raytheon, for example, which paid BGR $240,000 to lobby on its behalf in 2022, according to OpenSecrets, has already been awarded more than $2bn in government contracts related to the Ukraine war.

 

Indeed, two days before Russiaโ€™s invasion of Ukraine, aBGR adviser was publicly calling for increased military aidto Ukraine in the face of Putinโ€™s recognition of the so-called Luhansk and Donetsk Peopleโ€™s Republics as independent states.

 

โ€œMilitarily, the United States and Nato allies need to get far more serious about helping Ukraine defend itself,โ€ wroteKurt Volker, BGR senior adviserand former US Nato ambassador, in an article published by the Center for European Policy Analysis (Cepa).

 

His article, โ€œBuckle Up: This is Just the First Stepโ€, was promoted on the BGR website. Cepa did not disclose Volkerโ€™s BGR affiliation in the article.

 

โ€œBGR has no conflict of interest and is proud of its work on behalf of Ukraine and all of its clients,โ€ said BGRโ€™s president, Jeffrey H Birnbaum, in a statement responding to questions about whether their work posed any such conflict.

 

Mercury

Mercury Public Affairs (Mercury), a lobbying, public affairs and political strategy consultancy, began working pro bono forGloBee International Agency for Regional Development (โ€œGloBeeโ€), a Ukrainian NGO, in mid-March 2022. The firm made headlines for agreeing to work for a Ukrainian client pro bono. The firmโ€™s Fara filing later in the year shows that Mercuryโ€™s work consisted of sending just four emails on Globeeโ€™s behalf in the first three and a half months of this arrangement.

 

Mercury, like BGR, was also working on behalf of Pentagon contractors in 2022, while working for a Ukrainian client pro bono. All told, Mercury reported being paid more than $180,000 for lobbying on behalf of Pentagon contractors in 2022.โ€ฆ

COVID-19 conspiracies soar after latest report on origins

COVID-19โ€ฒs origins remain hazy. Three years after the start of the pandemic, itโ€™s still unclear whether the coronavirus that causes the disease leaked from a lab or spread to humans from an animal.

This much is known: When it comes to COVID-19 misinformation, any new report on the virusโ€™ origin quickly triggers a relapse and a return of misleading claims about the virus, vaccines and masks that have reverberated since the pandemic began.

It happened again this week after the Energy Department confirmed that a classified report determined, with low confidence, that the virus escaped from a lab. Within hours, online mentions of conspiracy theories involving COVID-19 began to rise, with many commenters saying the classified report was proof they were right all along.

Far from definitive, the Energy Departmentโ€™s report is the latest of many attempts by scientists and officials to identify the origin of the virus, which has now killed nearly 7 million people after being first detected in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.

The report has not been made public, and officials in Washington stressed that a variety of U.S. agencies are not in agreement on the origin. On Tuesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray told Fox News that the FBI โ€œhas for quite some time nowโ€ assessed that the pandemicโ€™s origins are โ€œmost likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan.โ€

'Buildup for War': US Spins COVID Lab Leak Narrative to 'Pin Blame on China'

 

Ostensibly "bombshell" new leakssuggesting the coronavirus likely originated from a lab incident in China's Wuhan stem from a need to pin the US and global financial mess related to the pandemic on China, which is deemed a rising threat in the Washington establishment, international relations expert Emanuel Pastreich told Sputnik.

 

The US Energy Department and the FBI have alleged that the COVID-19 pandemic most likely spread "via a mishap at a Chinese laboratory," according to a Wall Street Journal report co-authored by Michael R. Gordon. The report cited a classified intelligence paper provided to the White House and American lawmakers.

 

However, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on February 26 that there remained "a variety of views" in the US intelligence community about whether the virus emerged naturally, jumping from an infected animal to a human, or escaped from a lab. Sullivan stated that he "canโ€™t confirm or deny" The Wall Street Journal report on the matter.

 

The timing of the newly-resuscitated allegations has raised numerous questions.

 

"There are several issues at play here. The first is that the entire COVID-19 project and the medical and general policy enacted in the United States and around the world has increasingly been subject to question. A lot of the policies are now being criticized through all sorts of legal actions being taken. There's a need to try and pin all this on somebody. And China, the 'rising threat' in Washington establishment chatter, is a nice place to pin it on," said Pastreich, president of the Asia Institute think tank, which he founded in 2007.

 

"I think there's clearly a split within the establishment, the military defense establishment, as to how to deal with this COVID-19 crisis. Those looking for a solution ranges from those who want to pin it on the Chinese Communist Party, or who prop up the experts who say we need even more vaccines. And there are other people who are saying on the inside that this story is just not going to hold, that it has come time to clean house."

Mercuryโ€™s work for aUkrainian clientis also notable because before the Ukraine war the firm had, for years, been working on behalf of Russian interests.

 

This work included lobbying on behalf ofRussiaโ€™s Sovcombank, as well as a Russian energy company founded by the Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.Deripaska was recently implicated in a scheme to bribe an FBI agent that was investigating him.

 

Mercury dropped both of these Russian clients when the Ukraine war began, but not before earning nearly $3m from these Russian interests in the five years before the firm agreed to work for a Ukrainian client pro bono, according to Fara filings. Mercury did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

 

Navigators Global

 

On 29 April 2022 Navigators Global, which describes itself as an โ€œissues management, government relations and strategic communicationsโ€ firm, registered under Fara to represent the committee on national security, defence and intelligence of the Ukrainian parliament. According to the firmโ€™s Fara filing, theyreached out to dozens of key members of Congresson behalf of the Ukrainian parliament โ€“ including eight phone calls, texts and emails with McCarthy โ€“ and contacted the House and Senate armed services committees two dozen times.

 

As Navigators Global was doing this pro-bono lobbying of the policymakers in Congress with, arguably, the greatest sway over US military assistance to Ukraine, thefirm was also raking in revenue from Pentagon contractors. Specifically, in 2022 Navigators Global made $830,000 working on behalf of defense contractors, according to lobbying data compiled by OpenSecrets. The firmsโ€™ lobbying filings also show that their work for these contractors was directed, among other issues, at the FY23 National Defense Authorization Act, the defense policy bill that increased spending on the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative by half a billion dollars. Navigators Global did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

 

Ogilvy

 

On 26 August 2022 Ogilvy Group, a giant advertising and public relations agency, registered under Fara towork with the ministry of culture and information policy of Ukraineon the ministryโ€™s Advantage Ukraine Initiative. The initiativeโ€™s website describes it as the โ€œInvestment initiative of the Government of Ukraineโ€. The top listed investment option is Ukraineโ€™s defense industry.

 

Ogilvy is joined in this endeavor by fellow Fara registrantsGroup M and Hill & Knowlton Strategies, as well as the marketing company Hogarth Worldwide, which has not registered under Fara.

 

While the Ogilvy Group spread โ€œthe messagethat Ukraine is still open for businessโ€, as its statement of work with the ministry explains, Ogilvy Government Relations was lobbying for Pentagon contractors who paid the firm nearly half a million dollars in 2022. These two Ogilvy organizations are technically separate entities. They are owned by the same parent company, WPP.

 

At least one of the contractors that Ogilvy Government Relations lobbies for,Fluor, would appear to directly benefit from increased US military supportfor Ukraine and heightened US military presence in Europe more generally. In 2020, the US armyโ€™s seventh army training command awardedFluor with a five-year Logistics Support Services contract, which a Fluor spokesman explained, โ€œpositions Fluor for future work with the US European Command and the US Africa Command headquarters located in Germanyโ€. Fluor paid Ogilvy Government Relations $200,000 for lobbying in 2022, according to OpenSecrets. Ogilvy did not respond to a request to comment on the record.

 

As the war in Ukraine heads into its second year, US defense spending continues to balloon.Weapons and defense contractors received nearly half โ€“ $400bn โ€“ of the $858bn in the 2023 defense budget. (Because Biden intentionally left in $85 billion in Afghanistan)

 

โ€œThereโ€™s high demand for weapons to transfer to Ukraine and to replenish shrinking US stockpiles โ€ฆ contractors are seeing billions of dollars in Ukraine-related contracts.โ€ said Julia Gledhill, who investigates defense spending at the government watchdog the Project On Government Oversight.

Saying 'the virus 'leaked' from Wuhan' is not synonymous with the virus being manufactured there.

 

Viruses, as with URANIUM, can be transported from one location to another to make it LOOK like it came from one location and not another.

It's an interesting theory but it sounds like it came out of thin air once to Wuhan Lab Leak went mainstream.

Your theory isn't unfounded but poor timing.

 

Yes there are Biolabs in Ukraine but there are Biolabs throughout the world.

 

My question is simple, why logistically speaking would you manufacture a virus in Ukraine but to release it in Wuhan?

 

Plus there is that Chinese Doctor that said it came from the Virology Institute and this was the original theory floating around during the start of it all.

A Chinese virologist Dr. Li Meng Yan has made the assertion that the COVID-19 virus was intentionally created and released by the government of China.

On Monday, she reiterated that she still believed that the virus was deliberately released nearly three years after the outbreak began.

Recently, a classified intelligence report from the Energy Department concluded that the virus most likely originated in a Chinese laboratory.

According to Tucker Carlson, the Chinese government purposely released COVID-19 with the intention of crippling Western economies and strengthening their own global standing.

 

Dr. Yan, however, claimed that based on the information and sources she had access to, the virus was deliberately taken out of a high-security laboratory and introduced into the community.

 

Why did Yan leave China?

Before fleeing Hong Kong in April 2020, Dr. Li Meng Yan was a well-respected specialist in virology and immunology at the Hong Kong School of Public Health.

 

Her decision to leave was prompted by her investigation into the increasing number of cases in mainland China that indicated human-to-human transmission of the virus.

 

Yan claims that she shared her findings with her supervisor on January 16, but he allegedly advised her to remain silent and be cautious.

Scientists Now Want to Create AI Using Real Human Brain Cells

Move over artificial intelligence, say hello to "organoid intelligence" (OI).

Machine-learning models like the one that powers ChatGPT are generating essays, short stories, and entire podcasts. But scientists are looking into another way of computing that could be just as efficient and powerful, and itโ€™s in our brains.

 

In a new article published on Tuesday in Frontiers, a large international collaboration led by researchers at John Hopkins University (JHU) details how brain-machine technologies are the newest frontier in biocomputing, and provides a roadmap as to how to make it a reality.

 

As the paper explains, organoid intelligence (OI) is an emerging field where researchers are developing biological computing using 3D cultures of human brain cells (brain organoids) and brain-machine interface technologies. These organoids share aspects of brain structure and function that play a key role in cognitive functions like learning and memory. They would essentially serve as biological hardware, and could one day be even more efficient than current computers running AI programs.

 

โ€œThe vision of OI is to use the power of the biological system to advance the field of live sciences, bioengineering, and computer science,โ€ Lena Smirnova, a researcher at JHU and an author on the paper, wrote in an email to Motherboard. "If we look at how efficiently the human brain operates in processing of information, learning etc, it is tempting to translate and model that to have a system which will work faster and more efficiently [than] current computers.โ€

 

For example, the human brain has an incredible capacity to store information: the average noggin can store an estimated 2,500 terabytes, according to the paper. The researchers envision complex 3D cell structures that would be connected to AI and machine learning systems.

 

โ€œWeโ€™re reaching the physical limits of silicon computers because we cannot pack more transistors into a tiny chip,โ€ Thomas Hartung, a researcher at JHU and one of the studyโ€™s authors, said in a press release. โ€œBut the brain is wired completely differently. It has about 100 [billion] neurons linked through over 1015 connection points. Itโ€™s an enormous power difference compared to our current technology.โ€

 

Researchers have previously combined the biological and synthetic to teach brain cells how to play Pongโ€“โ€“a proof of concept that was conducted by some of the same scientists involved in this initiative. That project involved the creation of a DishBrain system, where researchers created a brain-computer interface, providing neurons with simple electrical sensory input and feedback that allowed them to โ€œlearnโ€ the game.

 

However, the new paper sees even bigger applications than getting cells to play video games. For one, brain organoids could have applications in medicine. The authors write that OI research will allow for the exploration of inter-individual neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders, and revolutionize drug testing research.

 

Just as with artificial intelligence, there are ethical concerns, and the researchers acknowledge that. To ensure OI develops in an ethically and socially responsive manner, they propose an โ€˜embedded ethicsโ€™ approach, where โ€œinterdisciplinary and representative teams of ethicists, researchers, and members of the public identify, discuss, and analyze ethical issues and feed these back to inform future research and work.โ€

 

This technology is not exactly ready to be deployed tomorrow. However, the researchers position the papers as being a jumping-off point for more research.

 

โ€œWe have functional brain organoids already, since we have an electrophysiological active system, which has synchronous electrical activity and is responsive to chemical and electrical stimuli,โ€ Smirnova wrote. โ€œThe next step we are working on is to characterize and optimize the system further by demonstrating key molecular and cellular aspects of learning in particular [to] develop a model of long-term learning.โ€

No. Even though AE Aurigae is named the Flaming Star and the surrounding nebula IC 405 is named the Flaming Star Nebula, and even though the nebula appears to some like a swirling flame, there is no fire. Fire, typically defined as the rapid molecular acquisition of oxygen, happens only when sufficient oxygen is present and is not important in such high-energy, low-oxygen environments such as stars. The bright star AE Aurigae occurs near the center of the Flaming Star Nebula and is so hot it glows blue, emitting light so energetic it knocks electrons away from surrounding gas. When a proton recaptures an electron, light is emitted, as seen in the surrounding emission nebula. Captured here three weeks ago, the Flaming Star Nebula is visible near the composite image's center, between the red Tadpole Nebula on the left and blue-tailed Comet ZTF on the right. The Flaming Star Nebula lies about 1,500 light years distant, spans about 5 light years, and is visible with a small telescope toward the constellation of the Charioteer (Auriga)

Pentagon makes prediction on Ukraine conflict timeline

Hostilities may drag on for several more years, with Kiev relying on foreign aid, a senior official has warned

 

The armed conflict inUkraine may last for three more years, though predicting the timeline is challenging, a senior Pentagon official has said during a hearing on Capitol Hill.

 

โ€œWe do not know the course and trajectory of the conflict,โ€ US Under Secretary of Defense Colin Kahl told members of the House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday. โ€œThe conflict may end six months from now, or it may end two years from now or three years from now.โ€ (He meant to say โ€œIt really depends on how much MIC and oligarchs need tp make, they are pretty greedy so it might be another Viet Nam or Afghanistan is the true answerโ€)

 

The hearing was being held to look into military assistance to Ukraine, which the administration of President Joe Biden has pledged to provide for โ€œas long as it takesโ€ for the country to prevail. Some lawmakers have criticized what they consider a blank check to Kiev, citing corruption concerns and the cost to American taxpayers.

 

Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, asked Kahl how many more times the Biden administration would ask Congress to open the purse for Ukraine and what the end game would look like. The under secretary replied that it wasup to Kiev to decide โ€œwhat peace settlementโ€ it was prepared to accept. (Liar! US and UK has been determining everything Kiev are puppets)

 

โ€œOur position has been to make sure that at whatever point they enter those conversations, they do so from a position of strength,โ€ he explained.

The Ukrainian government has declared that the only outcome it will accept is retaking all lands it claims sovereignty over. It also wants Moscow to pay war reparations and for the Russian leadership to stand trial before an international court.

 

According to US media, the Biden administration is said to have informed Kiev behind closed doors that it cannot indefinitely expect the level of support it has enjoyed so far. Washington reportedly urged Ukraine to prepare for a counteroffensive in the spring and summer, before drawing the conflict down.

 

Moscow has said it prefers a diplomatic solution to its concerns about NATO influence in Ukraine and radical nationalist elements among Ukrainian troops, but is ready to continue military action due to Kievโ€™s refusal to negotiate. The Kremlin also says Ukraine must recognize the outcome of referendums held in its former provinces, which delivered a result in favor of joining the Russian Federation

Inflation has not hit Mexico anywhere near as hard as the u.s. our nestegg is growing not diminishing day by day. 600 a month gets you a luxury apartment. Scientists Find Cure For Stephen Hawking's Disease (ALS, aka Lou Gehrig's Disease)

 

Russian scientists from the National Research University โ€˜Belgorod State Universityโ€™ (BelSU), as part of an international research team, have demonstrated the effectiveness of treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with a bioavailable derivative of vitamin B1.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurological disease characterized by rapid degeneration. The most famous patient suffering from this disease was the English theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking.

 

According to the WHO, the incidence of this disease is 2.5 cases per 100,000 people, which means that in Russia there are approximately 7,500 patients. There are hereditary forms of the disease, when the descendants inherit the "broken" gene from their parents. There is also a non-hereditary form of the disease, where the risk is roughly 1 in 300 and increases with age (the most at-risk being men, military personnel, smokers and handball players).

 

Researchers from the National Research University "Belgorod State University" (BelSU) have shown that the drugs at present used to treat ALS prolong patients' lives by only two to three months. As part of an international team of scientists, they conducted research on an animal model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis created in Russia - FUS transgenic mice.

 

These mice develop the same symptoms of the disease as humans, and without treatment, they die of paralysis at the age of four months. The model created by scientists makes it possible to study drugs which are showing promise without traumatizing patients.

 

The scientists' experiments on transgenic mice have confirmed that the treatment reduced levels of inflammatory signaling molecules in the spinal cord. The study results were published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy.

 

"We have found that the studiedbioavailable vitamin B1 derivative (O,S-Dibenzoyl Thiamine), which is a powerful antioxidant, showed efficacy against ALS in transgenic mice. The mice that received the treatment showed greater mobility, less weight loss, and less brain damage," Alexei Deikin, Associate Professor at the BelSU Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology, Director of the Joint Center for Genetic Technologies, told Sputnik.

Seismologist behind Tรผrkiye quake prediction issues another warning

The first week of March will be โ€œextremely critical,โ€ Frank Hoogerbeets says

 

Dutch seismologist Frank Hoogerbeets, who rose to international prominence after predicting the devastating earthquakes in Tรผrkiye and Syria last month, has said that the world could be hit with another major quake in the coming days.

 

Hoogerbeets, who makes his forecasts based on the motions of celestial bodies, published a video on YouTube on Monday in which he warned that โ€œthe first week of March is going to be extremely critical.โ€

 

โ€œA convergence of critical planetary geometry around March 2 and 5 may result in large to very large seismic activity, possibly even a mega-thrust earthquake around March 3 and 4 and/or March 6 and 7,โ€ the description to the clip read.

 

In the video itself, the seismologist claimed that the power of the supposedimpending quake โ€œmay be well over 8 magnitude.โ€

 

The affected area could stretch thousands of kilometers, from the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Kuril Islands in Russiaโ€™s Far East, all the way down to the Philippines and Indonesia, Hoogerbeets said.

 

โ€œIโ€™m not exaggerating. Iโ€™m not trying to create fear. This is a warning,โ€ insisted the scientist, who works at the Solar System Geometry Survey (SSGEOS).

 

The head of the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of Russiaโ€™s Academy of Sciences, Danila Chebrov, has questioned Hoogerbeetsโ€™ predictions and described him as an โ€œamateur.โ€ The connection between the movements of the planets in the solar system and seismic activity on Earth โ€œis rather weak, and itโ€™s problematic to use it as the main prognostic tool,โ€ Chebrov explained.

 

On February 3, Hoogerbeets issued a tweet that read: โ€œSooner or later there will be a magnitude 7.5 earthquake in this region (South-Central Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon).โ€

 

Three days later, a 7.8 magnitude quake struck Tรผrkiye and Syria. The disaster has caused the deaths of more than 50,000 people, with powerful aftershocks continuing in the region to this day.

 

Dutch seismologist Hoogerbeets has made predictions down the years which didnโ€™t come true. Commenting on his work earlier this month, Susan Hough of the US Geological Survey insisted that no scientist has โ€œever predicted a major earthquake.โ€ Hough told NPR that the spot-on forecast for the quakes in Tรผrkiye and Syria was just a coincidence. โ€œItโ€™s the stopped clock thatโ€™s right twice a day, basically,โ€ she said.

Jim obviously uses an architecture model that's pretty much industry standard at this point:

Load Balancing Servers.

This means having >1 server on the front in accepting the incoming volume of traffic.

They do some front end stuff before sending it to the back end to eventually make its way to the board as a post.

In less than two months on the job, Arizonaโ€™s Democratic attorney general, Kris Mayes, reassigned a unit tasked with investigating election fraud to instead focus on protecting voting rights. She then publicly took former attorney general Mark Brnovich, a Republican, to task for hiding documents that showed the 2020 election was free from widespread fraud.

 

โ€œObviously, there are clear differences between me and my predecessor on these issues,โ€ Mayes said.

 

In Arizona, where a Democratic governor and Republican-controlled legislature are unlikely to agree on any major alterations to election law, the biggest changes for democracy could instead come from the attorney generalโ€™s office. As the stateโ€™s top prosecutor, Mayes has the power to investigate voting crimes and bring charges against those who break election laws.

 

Before winning the attorney generalโ€™s office, Mayes was a reporter and an attorney and a member of formerDemocratic governor Janet Napolitanoโ€™s administration. A Republican until 2019, Mayes said she switched parties because the GOPโ€™s embrace of Trumpism left her and other moderate Republicans behind. Her perspective on elections differs greatly from her predecessor. In his last two years in office, Brnovich tried to play both sides of election issues, seeking to appease the far-right flank of his party in pursuit of a US Senate seat while not filing charges for widespread fraud. At first, he defended Joe Bidenโ€™s victory in the state, but over time, cast doubt on Maricopa countyโ€™s elections.

 

Mayes also contrasted strongly with her Republican challenger in the 2022 race, Abe Hamadeh, who she narrowly beat. Hamadeh embraced the falsehood that Trump won the 2020 election and was one of several election deniers who lost their statewide races in the increasingly purple state.

 

The attorney generalโ€™s race was among the closest in the stateโ€™s history. It went to an automatic recount, where her lead of 511 votes fell to 280 votes because of human errors in one Arizona county. Hamadeh has sued over the election, and his case is still ongoing.

 

Since taking office in January, Mayes has dramatically shifted the officeโ€™s priorities. She announced that an election integrity unit created by the state legislature at Brnovichโ€™s behest to investigate voter fraud will instead focus on voting rights and protecting elections officials.

 

She also released documents that Brnovichconcealed from the public that showed his officeโ€™s investigation into the 2020 election in the stateโ€™s largest county did not find widespread fraud. Mayes said she released the documents because Arizonans had a right to know the results and because her office has a โ€œsolemn duty to be honest and transparentโ€.

 

Several major election cases hang in the balance, including prosecutions for ballot collection in a border community, potential charges against county supervisors who initially refused to certify the 2022 election and inquiries into people who publicly posted voter signatures. Mayes wouldnโ€™t comment on these ongoing issues.

 

Mayes spoke with the Guardian about her officeโ€™s plans for election protection and prosecution. The interview has been condensed for length and clarity.

You plan to change the focus of your officeโ€™s election integrity unit. At a basic level, do you think that the unit needs to exist?

 

The short answer is yes, repurposed in the way that we anticipate. There is a real need in the state of Arizona to protect voting rights and to protect elections officials against threats to their lives and and against the harassment and intimidation that theyโ€™ve been facing. And of course, every election cycle thereโ€™s ahandful of actual voter fraud cases that come through this office. Those will continue to be investigated in the normal course of our work and under the law. But I think this unit needs to be repurposed toward protecting voters and especially elections officials. Weโ€™re seeing a sad exodus of elections officials from their jobs in the face of all of this harassment and these death threats. We obviously just saw the Cochise county elections director resign from her post because of all of the harassment she found herself facing, and that canโ€™t go on. I want to be very clear that we will prosecute anyone who engages in death threats or attempts to interfere in the conduct of our elections going forward.

 

Do you plan for your office to take proactive stances on voting rights issues?

 

Some of it depends on what actually passes out of this legislature and gets signed. But yeah, I do anticipate using the bully pulpit here in the AGโ€™s office to push back against legislation that would undermine voting rights. And obviously, if there are any instances of attempts to suppress the vote or voting rights, we will take action against that through this new unit.

 

When it comes to protecting elections officials, is that something that you think mostly will come from people referring things to your office or is there any kind of proactive work that your office could take on that?

 

I would like to head out to our 15 counties and have a conversation with county attorneys, sheriffs and the elections officials themselves about this. Iโ€™ve already had a conversation with [Maricopa county sheriff Paul] Penzone about working together to protect elections officials in the 2024 cycle. I had a conversation with the Yavapai county sheriff about it. So I anticipate having one-on-one conversations with local law enforcement about this and hopefully standing up a concerted effort together to work on this in advance of 2024. Iโ€™ve even thought about working towards the creation of a taskforce on this issue.

 

Have you gotten any pushback to changing the focus of the unit?

Not really, interestingly enough, no. Iโ€™m sure there are folks amongst Republican legislators who are not huge fans, but I havenโ€™t heard that specifically yet.

 

Arizona, in some cases, inspired other states to create these kinds of units. Does it make sense to have these kinds of units? Is Arizonaโ€™s experiment with it something that should be replicated?

 

I wouldnโ€™t offer any advice to other states. Each state has its own circumstances to address. We wouldnโ€™t have created this unit in this way today, obviously, itโ€™s not the kind of unit that I would create. Weโ€™re reorganized in a very, very different way. I certainly wouldnโ€™t advise other states to create an election integrity unit the way it was created under my predecessor.

 

Looking ahead to 2024, what sorts of things do you think need to be in place to improve elections before then or ensure that 2024 is a safe and secure election both for people running it and for voters?

 

Iโ€™m gonna leave that primarily up to the secretary of state and county elections officials. I know theyโ€™re working on the election procedures manual, the EPM. This office will play a role in helping to review that. We want to get back to the more normal situation in which the various elections officials, including this office, are working together on the EPM. That hasnโ€™t happened in the past. I think this office refused to approvethe EPM in the last few years under the previous administration, so that needs to happen.

I think that there needs to be this really concerted focus on protecting elections officials and making sure that folks know we will prosecute any attempts to intimidate or engage in violence against our elections officials, period, full stop. Iโ€™m going to be making that clear. I want to get that message out there, so that we can provide some deterrence to this behavior going forward. Our democracy depends on the ability of good people to step forward and serve as elections officials.

 

A slate of people in Arizona signed on to documents claiming Trump won the state, calling themselves the stateโ€™s electors. Is that something youโ€™re investigating?

 

We aregoing to investigate the fake electors. I can confirm that.

 

Because there is a justice department investigation into that issue, is that something that separately you undertake or do you work with them on it?

 

We are planning to reach out to federal officials on that matter. Beyond that, Iโ€™m not going to comment on it.

 

How do you think your predecessor did on election issues?

 

Obviously there are a lot of differences between how I intend to address elections matters and in the way my predecessor did. I would never have handled the 2020 election investigation the way he did, and certainly would not have handled the release of these documents the way he did. Beyond that, Iโ€™m going to let him speak for himself. But, obviously, there are clear differences between me and my predecessor on these issues.

 

Thereโ€™s still this ongoing lawsuit from your Republican challenger in 2022, Abe Hamadeh, as well. Is that something that is in any way distracting from your work? How are you managing that?

 

Itโ€™s not really been a distraction at all. Weโ€™ve sort of compartmentalized that and itโ€™s something that my outside attorneys and legal team is handling. Weโ€™ll just await the decision of the Mohave county judge whoโ€™s handling that, but weโ€™re really busy here carrying on the work of the people of Arizona.

Mortgage applications decreased 5.7 percent from one week earlier, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Associationโ€™s (MBA) Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending February 24, 2023.

 

The Market Composite Index, a measure of mortgage loan application volume, decreased 5.7 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from one week earlier. On an unadjusted basis, the Index decreased 4 percent compared with the previous week. The Refinance Index decreased 6 percent from the previous week and was 74 percent lower than the same week one year ago. The seasonally adjusted Purchase Index decreased 6 percent from one week earlier. The unadjusted Purchase Index decreased 3 percent compared with the previous week and was 44 percent lower than the same week one year ago. โ€œThe 30-year fixed rate increased to 6.71 percent last week (and now at 6.85%-from yesterday-cap #4), the highest rate since November 2022, which drove a 6 percent drop in applications. After a brief revival in application activity in January when mortgage rates dropped down to 6.2 percent, there has now been three straight weeks of declines in applications as mortgage rates have jumped 50 basis points over the past month,โ€ said Joel Kan, MBAโ€™s Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist. โ€œData on inflation, employment, and economic activity have signaled that inflation may not be cooling as quickly as anticipated, which continues to put upward pressure on rates.โ€ Added Kan, โ€œBoth purchase and refinance applications declined last week, with purchase index at a 28- year low for a second consecutive week. A new era of lunar exploration is on the rise, with dozens of Moon missions planned for the coming decade. Europe is in the forefront here, contributing to building the Gateway lunar station and the Orion spacecraft โ€“ set to return humans to our natural satellite โ€“ as well as developing its large logistic lunar lander, known as Argonaut. As dozens of missions will be operating on and around the Moon and needing to communicate together and fix their positions independently from Earth, this new era will require its own time.

Architecture for joint lunar exploration

โ€œLunaNet is a framework of mutually agreed-upon standards, protocols and interface requirements allowing future lunar missions to work together, conceptually similar to what we did on Earth for joint use of GPS and Galileo,โ€ explains Javier Ventura-Traveset, ESA's Moonlight Navigation Manager, coordinating ESA contributions to LunaNet. "Now, in the lunar context, we have the opportunity to agree on our interoperability approach from the very beginning, before the systems are actually implemented.โ€

 

Timing is a crucial element, adds ESA navigation system engineer Pietro Giordano: "During this meeting at ESTEC, we agreed on the importance and urgency of defining a common lunar reference time, which is internationally accepted and towards which all lunar systems and users may refer to. A joint international effort is now being launched towards achieving this.โ€

 

Up until now, each new mission to the Moon is operated on its own timescale exported from Earth, with deep space antennas used to keep onboard chronometers synchronised with terrestrial time at the same time as they facilitate two-way communications. This way of working will not be sustainable however in the coming lunar environment.

 

Once complete, the Gateway station will be open to astronaut stays, resupplied through regular NASA Artemis launches, progressing to a human return to the lunar surface, culminating in a crewed base near the lunar south pole. Meanwhile numerous uncrewed missions will also be in place โ€“ each Artemis mission alone will release numerous lunar CubeSats โ€“ and ESA will be putting down its Argonaut European Large Logistics Lander.

 

These missions will not only be on or around the Moon at the same time, but they will often be interacting as well โ€“ potentially relaying communications for one another, performing joint observations or carrying out rendezvous operations.

 

Moonlight satellites on the way

โ€œLooking ahead to lunar exploration of the future, ESA is developing through its Moonlight programme a lunar communications and navigation service," explains Wael-El Daly, system engineer for Moonlight. "This will allow missions to maintain links to and from Earth, and guide them on their way around the moon and on the surface, allowing them to focus on their core tasks. But also, Moonlight will need a shared common timescale in order to get missions linked up and to facilitate position fixes."

 

And Moonlight will be joined in lunar orbit by an equivalent service sponsored by NASA โ€“ the Lunar Communications Relay and Navigation System. To maximise interoperability these two systems should employ the same timescale, along with the many other crewed and uncrewed missions they will support.

 

Fixing time to fix position

Jรถrg Hahn, ESAโ€™s chief Galileo engineer and also advising on lunar time aspects comments: "Interoperability of time and geodetic reference frames has been successfully achieved here on Earth for Global Navigation Satellite Systems; all of todayโ€™s smartphones are able to make use of existing GNSS to compute a user position down to metre or even decimetre level.

 

"The experience of this success can be re-used for the technical long-term lunar systems to come, even though stable timekeeping on the Moon will throw up its own unique challenges โ€“ such as taking into account the fact that time passes at a different rate there due to the Moon's specific gravity and velocity effects.โ€

Setting global time

Accurate navigation demands rigorous timekeeping. This is because a satnav receiver determines its location by converting the times that multiple satellite signals take to reach it into measures of distance โ€“ multiplying time by the speed of light.

 

All the terrestrial satellite navigation systems, such as Europeโ€™s Galileo or the United Statesโ€™ GPS, run on their own distinct timing systems, but these possess fixed offsets relative to each other down to a few billionths of a second, and also to the UTC Universal Coordinated Time global standard.

 

The replacement for Greenwich Mean Time, UTC is part of all our daily lives: it is the timing used for Internet, banking and aviation standards as well as precise scientific experiments, maintained by the Paris-based Bureau International de Poids et Mesures (BIPM).

 

The BIPM computes UTC based on inputs from collections of atomic clocks maintained by institutions around the world, including ESAโ€™s ESTEC technical centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands and the ESOC mission control centre in Darmstadt, Germany.

 

Designing lunar chronology

Among the current topics under debate is whether a single organisation should similarly be responsible for setting and maintaining lunar time. And also, whether lunar time should be set on an independent basis on the Moon or kept synchronised with Earth.

 

The international team working on the subject will face considerable technical issues. For example, clocks on the Moon run faster than their terrestrial equivalents โ€“ gaining around 56 microseconds or millionths of a second per day. Their exact rate depends on their position on the Moon, ticking differently on the lunar surface than from orbit.

 

โ€œOf course, the agreed time system will also have to be practical for astronauts," explains Bernhard Hufenbach, a member of the Moonlight Management Team from ESA's Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration. "This will be quite a challenge on a planetary surface where in the equatorial region each day is 29.5 days long, including freezing fortnight-long lunar nights, with the whole of Earth just a small blue circle in the dark sky. But having established a working time system for the Moon, we can go on to do the same for other planetary destinations.โ€

 

Finally, to work together properly, the international community will also have to settle on a common โ€˜selenocentric reference frameโ€™, similar to the role played on Earth by the International Terrestrial Reference Frame, allowing the consistent measurement of precise distances between points across our planet. Suitably customised reference frames are essential ingredients of todayโ€™s GNSS systems.

 

"Throughout human history, exploration has actually been a key driver of improved timekeeping and geodetic reference models," adds Javier. "It is certainly an exciting time to do that now for the Moon, working towards defining an internationally agreed timescale and a common selenocentric reference, which will not only ensure interoperability between the different lunar navigation systems, but which will also foster a large number of research opportunities and applications in cislunar space.โ€

This prospective cohort study enrolled students from two schools aged 13โ€“18 years who received the second dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. Data including demographics, symptoms, vital signs, ECG, echocardiography and cardiac enzymes were collected at baseline, Day 3, Day 7, and Day 14 (optional) using case record forms.We enrolled 314 participants; of these, 13 participants were lost to follow up, leaving 301 participants for analysis. The most common cardiovascular effects were tachycardia (7.64%), shortness of breath (6.64%), palpitation (4.32%), chest pain (4.32%), and hypertension (3.99%). Seven participants (2.33%) exhibited at least one elevated cardiac biomarker or positive lab assessments. Cardiovascular effects were found in 29.24% of patients, ranging from tachycardia, palpitation, and myopericarditis. Myopericarditis was confirmed in one patient after vaccination. Two patients had suspected pericarditis and four patients had suspected subclinical myocarditis. Conclusion: Cardiovascular effects in adolescents after BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccination included tachycardia, palpitation, and myocarditis. The clinical presentation of myopericarditis after vaccination was usually mild, with all cases fully recovering within 14 days. Hence, adolescents receiving mRNA vaccines should be monitored for side effects. Clinical Trial Registration: NCT05288231

A total of 7.2 percent of U.S. adults identified as LGBT in 2022, a new record high.

 

As Statista's Katharina Buchholz notes, Gen Z, newly added in the Gallup survey's 2020 edition, is the gayest generation in terms of self-identification.

 

Almost 20 percent of those born between 1997 and 2004 identified as LGBT, compared with around 11 percent of Millennials.

 

While scientists believe that the share of LGBT individuals has not actually changed over time, younger people in the U.S. are more likely to be openly gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual.

 

Even within the generation of Millennials, defined as those born between 1981 and 1996, self-identification quotas rose in the past years. In 2014, only 6.3 percent of Millennials had said they identified as LGBT.

 

For older generations, levels of self-identification did not change majorly in the past decade.

 

The Gallup survey question did not ask respondents to identify as other sexes, sexual identities or sexual orientations like intersex, asexual or queer.

Violence spread from the capital, Kigali, throughout the country, encouraged by the presidential guard and radio propaganda.

 

The killing was led by a militia called the Interahamwe, but ordinary citizens were urged to join in. In some cases, Hutus were forced by military personnel to murder their Tutsi neighbours.

 

About 200 priests and nuns โ€“ Tutsi and Hutu โ€“ were among those slaughtered. But other priests and nuns were complicit, or even took part, in the violence. Thousands of people were butchered in churches where they sought refuge. An estimated 5,000 people were killed at the Ntarama Catholic church on 15 August 1994: the site is now one of six major memorials in Rwanda.

 

One priest, Father Athanase Seromba, ordered his church to be bulldozed with 2,000 Tutsis sheltering inside.

Another, Father Wenceslas Munyeshyaka, helped draw up lists of people to be killed and raped young women, according to charges issued by the UNโ€™s international criminal tribunal for Rwanda in 2005.

The Defense Production Act (DPA 1950 amended, pdf) essentially is a legislative hurdle that stops the executive from stepping into the private sector and restricting trade, commerce or manufacturing, unless the President says a critical shortage of โ€œxxxxโ€ is present and national security is at stake. It protects citizens from the threat of govt nationalization of resource โ€œxxxxโ€.

 

In the event the President makes a national security determination, he/she is required to inform congress, invoke the waiver authority, and identify which sectors he/she is now outlining as a national securityโ€ฆ such that government purchase orders take precedent in the supply of โ€œxxxxโ€. Yesterday, President Biden invoked this authority.

 

Given the pandemic shortages are over, and given the sectors outlined, it looks like munitions, raw material, explosives, electronics and certain component issues related to the Defense Dept are outlined.

U.S. stocks moved lower Wednesday, following on from Wall Street's second monthly decline in the past three, as the market's most important near-term indicator breached levels last seen in late October.

 

Benchmark 10-year Treasury note yields were marked 5 basis points higher on the session at 4%, the highest in four months and a level that has been linked to both the start of the stock market's October rally and its fizzingly out in early February. House Advances Bill Against Chinaโ€™s Live Organ Harvesting, Killing up to 100,000 per Year

 

The House Foreign Affairs Committee voted on Tuesday to advance a bill to sanction individuals implicated in Chinaโ€™s decades-long scheme of harvesting organs from political prisoners, a gruesome practice experts believe expanded significantly after the establishment of concentration camps for Muslims in 2017.

 

The bill, the Stop Forced Organ Harvesting Act of 2023ยญยญ, was authored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), who last year organized a hearing in which experts on the subjects detailed the testimonies of concentration camp survivors, who observed camp victims typically about 28 years old disappearing after medical tests โ€œin the middle of the night,โ€ believed to be killed for their organs. In addition to Uyghur and other Turkic Muslims, the victims of dictator Xi Jinpingโ€™s concentration camp apparatus in occupied East Turkistan, members of the Falun Gong spiritual movement have for decades accused China of killing their members to sell their organs on the international black market.

 

โ€œUnder Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party, the cruelty of murdering between 60,000 to 100,000 young victims every yearโ€”average age 28โ€”to steal their organs is unimaginable,โ€ Smith said on Wednesday in a statement following the approval of his bill at the committee level. The House Foreign Affairs Committee voted unanimously to send the bill to the House floor, where members will debate it and potentially pass it as a law.

 

The Stop Forced Organ Harvesting Act โ€“ a bipartisan bill co-sponsored by Reps. Michael McCaul (R-TX), Bill Keating (D-MA) and Kathy Manning (D-NC) โ€“ would, among other provisions, require the U.S. government to engage in reporting on human trafficking to steal their organs and sanction individuals found participating in live organ harvesting and black market sales of stolen organs. The sanctions vary depending on the nationality of the person implicated: the Secretary of State may refuse to give a passport to an American convicted of violating laws against stealing organs, while the law allows the banning of foreigners implicated in the practice from American soil. Due to previously standing agreements with the United Nations, the law would not block an implicated foreigner โ€“ Xi Jinping, for example โ€“ from visiting the United Nations headquarters in New York, though it could potentially apply to the rest of the country.

 

The bill would, if it becomes law, also โ€œblock and prohibit all transactions in property and interests in property and makes that person inadmissible to the United States and ineligible to receive a visa,โ€ according to Rep. Smithโ€™s office.

 

Years of painstaking investigations by human rights activists, journalists, and experts on human trafficking have yielded a mountain of evidence suggesting that the Chinese Communist Party has been using political prisoners as unwilling organ donors since the 1990s. According to Enver Tohti, a Uyghur surgeon who has repeatedly testified to being forced to carve organs out of at least one prisoner, the practice likely began in East Turkistan, the Uyghur heartland, in at least 1990. Tohti asserts that, in 1995, Chinese communist officials forced him to carve the heart out of a man, appearing to be a prisoner, who had just received a gunshot wound to the head. The heart appeared to still be beating when he took the manโ€™s kidneys and liver.

 

โ€œMy chief surgeons were happy to put those organs, a liver and two kidneys, into a weird looking box,โ€ Tohti told the Canadian House of Commons. โ€œThen they said: โ€˜Ok, now you take your team back to the hospital, and remember that nothing happened today.'โ€

 

Tohtiโ€™s revelations were pivotal to the first large-scale investigations into the Chinese governmentโ€™s organ harvesting initiatives, โ€œBloody Harvestโ€ and โ€œThe Slaughter,โ€ by former Canadian lawmaker David Kilgour, human rights lawyer David Matas, and journalist Ethan Gutmann. The studies revealed that, in addition to Uyghur prisoners, Falun Gong practitioners, Tibetans, and Christians were among those targeted. The researchers began their investigations noting discrepancies in Chinaโ€™s reported donated organs versus the number of transplants on the record at a national level.

 

Gutmann and Tohti testified to Rep. Smithโ€™s hearing in May on forced organ harvesting, confirming that evidence suggests the practice is ongoing in the present.

Chinese Officials Blame US Army for Coronavirus

There is no evidence backing the idea that SARS-CoV-2 originated from US servicemembers visiting Wuhan.

AChinese official who has a history of attacking the United States online has lent a voice to a conspiracy theory that blames American soldiers for bringing COVID-19 to China, though the science does not support that narrative.

 

According to the unfounded accusation, which reports say has been widely shared on the popular Chinese social media platform Weibo, the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 was introduced to China when 300 US military members arrived in the Wuhan region for the Military World Games in mid-October and infected the local population. None of the servicemembers who made the trip have tested positive for the virus.

 

The rumors seemed to begin when Chinese respiratory specialist Zhong Nanshan stated at a February press conference that โ€œthough the COVID-19 was first discovered in China, it does not mean that it originated from China,โ€ planting the seeds of doubt.

 

On Thursday (March 12), Zhao Lijian, the spokesperson of Chinaโ€™s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, took to Twitter, a social platform banned in China, to ask, โ€œWhen did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected? What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!โ€

 

The text of the tweet was accompanied by a video of US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield saying that some deaths assumed to have been caused by the flu were actually COVID-19, though the video does not reference specific cases or dates.

 

Lijian has also retweeted a link to a known conspiracy site that claims the virus may have originated at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Ft. Detrick in Maryland, which was shut down in August after biosafety lapses with a number of pathogens. The website goes on to speculate that the virus went from Ft. Detrick to e-cigarettes to Hawaii to Wuhan. There is no evidence the pathogens in Maryland ever left the lab and thereโ€™s an equal lack of evidence supporting any of the other claims.

 

An analysis of the virusโ€™s genome indicates that the outbreak wasnโ€™t caused by a strain from a lab and likely came from wild animals instead.

 

Despite the lack of evidence, the fact that a government official is making these claims seemingly unchecked could have larger consequences, says Victor Shih, an associate professor at the University of California, San Diego.

 

โ€œIf the [Chinese] leadership really believes in the culpability of the U.S. government,โ€ Shih tells The New York Times, โ€œit may behave in a way that dramatically worsens the bilateral relationship.โ€

 

The statements might simply be a distraction from criticisms about how China has handled the outbreak. Li Wenliang, a Chinese doctor who had tried to raise awareness about the virus in the early stages, was punished by the government and forced to say his concerns were an โ€œillegal rumor.โ€ Li contracted the virus himself while treating a patient in January and died on February 7. Critics claim that had these concerns been taken seriously at the time, it could have curbed the severity of the outbreak.

 

The unfounded claims could also be a response to US officials who have referred to SARS-CoV-2 as the โ€œChina virusโ€ or โ€œWuhan virus,โ€ according to the Times, terms that Lijian denounced as โ€œhighly irresponsibleโ€ at a March 4 press conference.

 

โ€œThe conspiracy theories are a new, low front in what they clearly perceive as a global competition over the narrative of this crisis,โ€ Julian Gewirtz, an Academy Scholar at Harvard University's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, tells the Times.

Ominous Forecast: 'Mega-Thrust' Earthquake May Hit US West Coast This Week

 

In a February 3 tweet, Dutch seismologist Frank Hoogerbeets warned of a possible magnitude 7.5 or greater earthquake in Turkiye and Syria. Three days later, a devastating earthquake struck precisely on the Turkiye-Syria border, causing massive damage and tens of thousands of deaths.

 

Seismologist Frank Hoogerbeets at the Solar System Geometry Survey (SSGEOS) has issued a prediction of a major earthquake in the upcoming week.

 

"We cannot know for sure, but the first week of March will be extremely critical. We could see earthquakes of magnitude more than seven or eight," the researcher said in a new video breakdown.

 

The Dutch seismologist explains that "a convergence of critical planetary geometry" may lead to a very large seismic activity around March 3-4. According to the researcher, it could also result in a "mega-thrust earthquake" this weekend, with the power of the potential quake possibly reaching 8 magnitude on the Richter scale.

 

According to Hoogerbeets, the US West Coast is the first place in danger. Seismic activity of up to 7-8 on the Richter scale is possible there at the end of the first week of March. Earthquakes of a similar magnitude have killed around 45,000 people in Turkiye since February 6, with the death toll expected to go up.

 

Northern regions of Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Russia's Kamchatka and Kuril Islands are also said to be at risk.

 

"In the first week of March, there could be several seismic events of magnitude greater than six. There are two scenarios: either a major seismic event will occur around 3 or 4 March [โ€ฆ] or with some seismic amplification on 6 or 7 March, during the full moon," the seismologist said.
