State Sen. Sara Feigenholtz, D-Chicago, filed Senate Bill 40 to keep Illinois on its path to having one million EVs on the roads by 2030. The bill was signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker Friday with an effective date of Jan. 1, 2024.

 

In 2021, Pritzker signed the Reimagining Electric Vehicles in Illinois Act into law, which incentivizes EV production across the state. There are also state tax incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles.

 

State Rep. Robyn Gabel, D-Evanston, explained during House debates the benefits she sees in SB40.

 

"We know that approximately 80% of people charge their EVs at home," Gabel said. "This bill will ensure that Illinois residents can do just that."

 

The measure passed the Illinois Senate in March with a vote of 39-16. The House approved the bill in May with a vote of 60-38. Much of the conversation focused on the project's potential costs to consumers.

The Beatles are releasing their ‘last’ record. AI helped make it possible

 

LONDON (AP) — Artificial intelligence has been used to extract John Lennon’s voice from an old demo to create “the last Beatles record,” decades after the band broke up, Paul McCartney said Tuesday.

 

McCartney, 80, told the BBC that the technology was used to separate the Beatles’ voices from background sounds during the making of director Peter Jackson’s 2021 documentary series, “The Beatles: Get Back.” The “new” song is set to be released later this year, he said.

 

Jackson was “able to extricate John’s voice from a ropey little bit of cassette and a piano,” McCartney told BBC radio. “He could separate them with AI, he’d tell the machine ‘That’s a voice, this is a guitar, lose the guitar’.”

“So when we came to make what will be the last Beatles record, it was a demo that John had that we worked on,” he added. “We were able to take John’s voice and get it pure through this AI so then we could mix the record as you would do. It gives you some sort of leeway.”

 

McCartney didn’t identify the name of the demo, but the BBC and others said it was likely to be an unfinished 1978 love song by Lennon called “Now and Then.” The demo was included on a cassette labeled “For Paul” that McCartney had received from Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, the BBC reported.

 

McCartney described AI technology as “kind of scary but exciting,” adding: “We will just have to see where that leads.”

 

The same technology enabled McCartney to “duet” virtually with Lennon, who was murdered in 1980, on “I’ve Got a Feeling” last year at Glastonbury Festival.

Calling Security and Exchange Chairman Gary Gensler a tyrant, U.S. Rep. Warren Davidson introduced legislation to remove him from the position and restructure the commission.

 

Davidson, R-Ohio, and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minnestoa, say the SEC Stabilization Act will take corrective action to remove Gensler after what they call a long series of abuses that have occurred under the current SEC structure.

 

“U.S. capital markets must be protected from a tyrannical chairman, including the current one,” Davidson said. “That’s why I’m introducing legislation to fix the ongoing abuse of power and ensure protection that is in the best interest of the market for years to come. It’s time for real reform and to fire Gary Gensler as chair of the SEC.”

 

Davidson outlined allegations that ranged from creating two or more rules proposals a month to short comment periods and high staff turnover at a government hearing in April.

18-year-old trainee shot 3 soldiers at firing range on Japanese army base, killing 2, officials say

 

TOKYO (AP) — An 18-year-old army trainee shot three fellow soldiers at a firing range on a Japanese army base Wednesday, killing two of them, officials said.

 

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at the scene in Gifu prefecture in central Japan, police said.

 

The suspect fired a rifle at other soldiers during a shooting exercise at the Hino Kihon firing range, police said. Among the three wounded is a 25-year-old soldier, police said.

 

The Ground Self Defense Force, Japan’s army, confirmed that two of those wounded were later pronounced dead at a hospital.

 

A number of other people were believed to be participating in the training when the shooting occurred, but details are still under investigation, an army official said on condition of anonymity, citing protocol.

 

Japan has been known for its safety, with strict gun control laws, but high-profile violence has occurred in recent years, including shootings and random knifings on subways and arson attacks, and there is growing concern about homemade guns and explosives.

 

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was almost hit by a pipe bomb thrown by a suspect at an election campaign venue in April.

 

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated in July 2022 by an attacker using a handmade gun.

 

Last month, a man was arrested after he allegedly shot two police officers to death after killing two women with a knife in Nagano prefecture.

Putin hints at Ukraine operation objectives

Moscow does not plan to “march on Kiev” right now, the president has implied in a conversation with war correspondents.

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has made certain revelations regarding Moscow’s current goals in its military campaign in Ukraine. Russian troops are unlikely to mount an offensive targeting Kiev as of now, he hinted while discussing the operation with military correspondents and bloggers on Tuesday.

 

His comments came as the president was discussing a potential new mobilization campaign in Russia, the need for which would be defined by the operation’s goals, he said.

 

“Do we need to march on Kiev? If we do, then we need mobilization. If we don’t, then not,” Putin said, adding that “there is no need” to launch a new military draft campaign “today.” The president also said that Russian troops have enjoyed a steady inflow of volunteers. Over 150,000 people have signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry since January, he revealed.

 

Speaking about Russia’s “fundamental” goals in Ukraine, the president confirmed that they remained the same and that the Kremlin had no plans to change them. Missions are adapted based on developments on the battlefield, he added.

President Donald Trump outlined his legal defense in a Tuesday evening speech after pleading not guilty to 37 criminal counts related to his handling of classified materials the same day.

 

Trump made his remarks in Bedminster, N.J., after appearing at a Miami federal courthouse to enter his plea earlier that day. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and characterized special counsel Jack Smith's bringing of charges against him as part of an ongoing Democrat-led political persecution of him.

 

"Today we witness the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country," he said. "A corrupt sitting president had his top political opponent arrested on fake and fabricated charges of which he and numerous other presidents would be guilty right in the middle of a presidential election in which he is losing very badly."

 

"This is called election interference," he continued. "More importantly, it's a political persecution like something straight out of a fascist or a communist nation. This day will go down in infamy and Joe Biden will forever be remembered not only as the most corrupt president in the history of our country, but perhaps even more importantly the president, who together with a band of his closest thugs, misfits, and Marxists, tried to destroy American democracy."

Trump asserted the absurdity of charging him with crimes that would demand 400 years in prison, contending that the Espionage Act was meant to address foreign spying, which warranted the death penalty.

 

He further reiterated his argument that he maintained the authority to possess the documents under the Presidential Records Act and pointed to the Clinton case, which established that the president maintains sweeping authority to separate personal materials from presidential records.

 

"The president enjoys unconstrained authority to make decisions the disposal of documents," Trump said.

 

Trump went on to quote the Clinton decision which explicitly established that the National Archives and Records Administration lacks any legal means to determined what documents constitute presidential records nor to seize any such materials.

 

Trump also addressed the numerous photographs of materials the FBI seized, calling them "staged" and insisting most of the boxes contained memorabilia from his presidency such as press clippings and merchandize.

 

"I'm not the one who thinks I'm above the law. I'm the one that followed the law," he declared, before highlighting the apparent disparity between the DOJ's handling of his alleged misconduct and that of President Joe Biden for a comparable issue.

Luman / Smith: Coincidence?

Luman Walters (c. 1789 – June 2, 1860) is known for his connection with the family of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement.

 

Walters was reportedly the "son of a rich man living on the Hudson". He had "received a scientific education" and studied in Paris. Alva Beaman's daughter recalled that "After he came home he lived like a misanthrope. He had come back an infidel, believing neither in man nor God."

Walters returned to the United States by 1818 and began acting the part of a physician and occult expert. In that year, James Giddings, the deputy sheriff of Boscawen, New Hampshire, offered a reward for the arrest of a "transient person, calling himself Laman Walter, [who] has for several days past been imposing himself upon the credulity of the people in this vicinity by a pretended knowledge of magic, palmistry and conjuration"

In 1822 and 1823, Walters served as a seer for a treasure dig on the property of Abner Cole in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York. Joseph Smith, Sr., Alvin Smith, and Joseph Smith reportedly participated in this dig. Walters possessed a magical book and a seer stone, which he used to locate buried treasure

Mormon historian D. Michael Quinn has argued that Walters crafted the magical parchments owned by the Smith family, and Quinn theorizes that the young Joseph Smith looked to Walters as an occult mentor.

 

It has been suggested that Walters might be the 'fortune-teller' that Brigham Young referred to on multiple occasions in the 1850s.

In 1850, Young told the General Conference "I remember once at the commencement of the church a necromancer embraced it but he could not be satisfied; he came and said he had fingered and handled the perverted priesthood so much, the course I have taken is downwards; the devil has too fast hold of me, I cannot go with you.”

The Journal of Discourses records an 1855 speech by Young in which he again spoke of a man who "was a fortune-teller, necromancer, an astrologer, a soothsayer and possessed as much talent as any man that walked on the American soil, and was one of the wickedest men I ever saw."

 

The 1830 census lists a Luman Walters in Sodus Township, New York, with a wife and five children.

In 1834 Walter purchased property in Gorham, New York, and he appears on the census rolls there in 1840.

The local antenna electric and magnetic fields are called near field which along with properly timed new incoming charges allow for this creation of electromagnetic radiation which becomes the far field. The voltage versus current 90 degree phase relationship in the antenna and new charge timing allow this far field radiation to occur.

GOP Pollster Frank Luntz Hits The Panic Button on Trump’s Possible Reelection: ‘Conceivable That in 2024 The Country Comes Apart’

Pollster Frank Luntz, who is best known for his work with Republican candidates and as a media commentator, offered a dire warning to the U.S. public this week in an interview published by The Sydney Morning Herald.

 

Luntz spoke with Latika Bourke while in London addressing the Centre for Policy Studies’ Margaret Thatcher conference and walked back comments he made in 2021 in which he declared former President Donald Trump would never return to the presidency.

 

“I now have to acknowledge that it is a distinct possibility that Donald Trump could be elected president – I did not believe that one year ago,” Luntz told Bourke. In the interview, published Monday, Luntz argued that Trump’s domestic opponents and the way the court cases against him have been handled have dealt Trump back in and given him a real shot at winning another general election.

 

“I did not believe that the search of Mar-a-Lago would be handled so badly, I did not believe that the indictment of him in New York would be handled so badly,” Luntz argued, adding:

 

I did not believe that his opponents would be so inept as to actually strengthen him and the combination of all of those makes him now viable, not just in the Republican primary but in the general election.

 

Luntz then explained to Bourke that Trump’s positioning in the 2024 race is an existential threat to U.S. democracy and even went so far as to quantify the odds of the U.S. breaking apart.

 

“It’s now conceivable that in 2024 the country comes apart,” he declared, adding:

 

We have a 15 percent likelihood of that destroying American democracy depending on what happens.

 

NATO is in jeopardy, clearly. Ukraine will no longer receive American support. Our legal system will be in jeopardy – I don’t want to contemplate it.

 

It was never conceivable before, just as January 6 wasn’t conceivable, just as the election day wasn’t conceivable, just as Roe v Wade being overturned wasn’t conceivable.

 

The Roman Empire could never fall until it fell, the sun never set on the British Empire until it came apart, the Greeks created civilisation and now look where Greece is.

 

“Everything that I would have [previously] said to you was impossible is actually happening,” Luntz told Bourke at one point referring back to his interview in October 2021, in which he said, “He will not win. If Trump runs again he will be nominated by the Republicans, but he will never be elected president because there are too many people who hate him.”

 

Luntz went on to argue that media silos and the lack of agreed-upon general facts in the country are threatening to tear down U.S. democracy. “Democracies can survive negativity and they can survive division. They cannot survive rejection of the truth because in the end, the foundation of democracy is knowing the truth, that’s how voters vote correctly,” Luntz said in the interview.

 

“The moment you stop seeking the truth and start rejecting it, actively, that’s the moment when you lose this wonderful system of government, and we are there right now,” he concluded.

 

Luntz went on to explain how Trump has used the indictments against him to create his own narrative and win back voters. “He actually knows the language of victimisation better than any politician I’ve seen anywhere across the globe, and he uses it effectively and has caused people to rally around him.”

 

“So he’s actually stronger today under two indictments, being found guilty of sexual assault, he’s actually politically stronger today than he was one year ago,” Luntz argued.

Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to helm the Biden Justice Department’s investigations of former President Donald Trump, has a mixed track record handling investigations into major political figures.

 

Smith was the chief of the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section in the nation’s capital from 2010 until early 2015, leading a team of 30 prosecutors in conducting public corruption cases throughout the United States.

 

During his years as chief, Smith’s unit garnered a successful conviction against former Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA), which was later unanimously overturned by the Supreme Court, and pursued a case against Democratic vice presidential candidate and former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC), which resulted in a hung jury and a mistrial. Smith's team also secured a conviction against Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) before he was pardoned by Trump in 2021 and laid the groundwork for what would become the unsuccessful prosecution of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ).

 

“Today, I signed an order appointing Jack Smith to serve as special counsel,” Garland announced during his Friday press conference. “The order authorizes him to continue the ongoing investigations into” the Capitol riot and the Mar-a-Lago saga, the attorney general said, “and to prosecute any federal crimes that may arise from those investigations.”

 

Garland added: “Mr. Smith is the right choice to complete these matters in an even-handed and urgent manner.”

 

The Justice Department announced that Smith had resigned from his most recent role as chief prosecutor for the special court in The Hague, where he had been tasked with investigating war crimes in Kosovo.

 

Before that, Smith served as first assistant U.S. attorney and acting U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee from early 2015 to the summer of 2017.

 

“I intend to conduct the assigned investigation and any prosecutions that may result from them independently and in the best traditions of the Department of Justice,” Smith promised Friday. "I will exercise independent judgment and will move the investigations forward expeditiously and thoroughly to whatever outcome the facts and the law dictate.”

(The Center Square) - For the last few years California has had devastating wildfires ravage the land, disrupt the lives of thousands of residents and result in fatalities and now new Environmental Protection Agency rules may make it more likely to occur again.

 

Last year’s Fairview fire consumed more than 28,000 acres and took two lives but it was the Creek Fire in 2021 which burned more than 379,000 acres, that set the record for the largest single fire in California’s history. The year before that was another record-setting year- for the most wildfires in a single year- when more than 9,000 wildfires charred more than 4 million acres of land in 2020.

 

Now U.S. Senators Alex Padilla, Dianne Feinstein (both D-Calif.) and 23 members of California's House of Representatives delegation are aiming to keep prescribed burns in California's arsenal of tools to stop wildfires from getting out of control again.

Smith has a mixed success record of going after high-profile politicians.

 

Bob McDonnell

 

Smith’s DOJ biography in 2015 touted that while chief of the Public Integrity Section, Smith helped with the prosecution against McDonnell, who was indicted and convicted on federal corruption charges related to bribery in 2014. The case was being prosecuted by Smith’s deputy in the Public Integrity Section. McDonnell was investigated while governor, indicted shortly after leaving office in January 2014, convicted in September 2014, and sentenced to two years in prison in 2015.

 

The Supreme Court unanimously overturned McDonnell’s conviction in the summer of 2016.

 

McDonnell had been among the more popular Republican governors in the country, received a well-received reaction to his response to then-President Barack Obama’s State of the Union in January 2010, and was considered to be on the vice presidential short list for former governor and now-Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) when he was running against Obama in 2012.

 

The former governor and his wife, Maureen, were indicted in January 2014 on fraud and extortion charges related to their acceptance of $175,000 in loans and gifts from Virginia businessman Jonnie Williams while McDonnell was in office. Williams was the CEO of Star Scientific and hoped for assistance from the governor on getting Virginia’s public universities to perform research on a substance used in his company’s nutritional supplements.

 

The former Virginia governor appealed his conviction to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court then took up the case.

“The Government’s expansive interpretation of ‘official act’ would raise significant constitutional concerns,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote. “Conscientious public officials arrange meetings for constituents, contact other officials on their behalf, and include them in events all the time. Representative government assumes that public officials will hear from their constituents and act appropriately on their concerns. The Government’s position could cast a pall of potential prosecution over these relationships.”

 

Roberts added: “There is no doubt that this case is distasteful; it may be worse than that. But our concern is not with tawdry tales of Ferraris, Rolexes, and ball gowns. It is instead with the broader legal implications of the Government’s boundless interpretation of the federal bribery statute. A more limited interpretation of the term ‘official act’ leaves ample room for prosecuting corruption, while comporting with the text of the statute and the precedent of this Court.”

 

The Obama Justice Department dropped the McDonnell case after the Supreme Court slapped it down. The legal defense reportedly cost the McDonnells over $27 million.

 

“There was never a quid pro quo or any conspiracy or any agreement to help Mr. Williams,” McDonnell said in 2017. “And ultimately, the Supreme Court of the United States said that government advanced essentially a dangerous legal theory that had serious constitutional problems.”

Smith’s unit also pursued criminal charges against Edwards, a former senator, the vice presidential running mate for then-Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) when he was the Democratic Party’s unsuccessful nominee against President George W. Bush, and the second runner-up in the 2008 Democratic primaries, which Obama won over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

 

The Justice Department announced in June 2011 that a federal grand jury had handed down a six-count indictment against Edwards “for allegedly participating in a scheme to violate federal campaign finance laws.” Prosecutors said the Democrat was hit with one count of conspiracy to violate the federal campaign finance laws and to make false statements to the Federal Election Commission, four counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions in 2007 and 2008, and one count of concealing those illegal donations from the FEC.

 

The scheme was related to more than $900,000 going from backers of Edwards to Rielle Hunter, a filmmaker hired for his 2008 campaign and with whom he was having an extramarital affair. The money was allegedly used to help cover up the affair Edwards was having in 2008 as his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer.

 

The jury deadlocked in May 2012 after a five-week trial and more than a week of deliberations. Some officials inside the Justice Department reportedly had initial misgivings about the case before getting on board with the prosecution.

 

After the mistrial loss, Smith said at the time that “our job is to look at the facts and then look at the law and apply the facts to the law.” The Justice Department soon announced it wouldn’t attempt to retry Edwards.

 

Jurors said on TV after the trial that a majority didn’t think the DOJ had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt and that the evidence simply wasn’t there, while a minority wanted to convict Edwards.

 

Rick Renzi

 

Smith’s unit did successfully prosecute Renzi, who was convicted in 2013 for extortion, bribery, insurance fraud, money laundering, and racketeering. The DOJ said the evidence at trial showed the congressman “promised in 2005 to use his legislative influence to profit from a federal land exchange that involved property” owned by real estate investor James Sandlin. Renzi was convicted on 17 counts and sentenced to 36 months in prison in 2013.

 

Trump pardoned Renzi on his final full day in office, before President Joe Biden’s inauguration, with the former congressman saying he had been “wrongly convicted by a Department of Justice that engaged in witness tampering, illegal wiretapping, and gross prosecutorial misconduct.”

Smith also helped lead the investigation into Menendez, although he left his post just a few months before the Justice Department announced in April 2015 that it had indicted Menendez and Florida ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen in New Jersey “in connection with a bribery scheme in which Menendez allegedly accepted gifts from Melgen in exchange for using the power of his Senate office to benefit Melgen’s financial and personal interests.”

 

“According to allegations in the indictment, between January 2006 and January 2013, Menendez accepted close to $1 million worth of lavish gifts and campaign contributions from Melgen in exchange for using the power of his Senate office to influence the outcome of ongoing contractual and Medicare billing disputes worth tens of millions of dollars to Melgen and to support the visa applications of several of Melgen’s girlfriends,” the Justice Department said at the time.

 

Menendez pleaded not guilty, proclaimed his innocence, and said he and Melgen were just longtime friends.

 

Following an 11-week trial, the federal judge overseeing the case declared a mistrial in November 2017 after the 12-person jury said it was deadlocked on the charges. One of the jurors told reporters that the jury was split 10-2 on all of the counts, with the large majority voting to acquit the senator.

 

“The way this case started was wrong, the way it was investigated was wrong, the way it was prosecuted was wrong, and the way it was tried was wrong as well,” Menendez said outside the courtroom at the time.

 

The Justice Department initially said in mid-January 2018 that it would seek a new trial, declaring that “the conduct alleged in the indictment is serious and warrants retrial.”

 

But a few days later, U.S. District Judge William Walls acquitted Menendez on seven of the counts that had been brought against him. The Justice Department gave up its efforts to retry the senator and dismissed the indictment that month.

 

A bipartisan Senate Ethics Committee report blasted Menendez in April 2018.

The First Assistant U.S. Attorney position has been vacant since David Rivera was named U.S. Attorney.

 

“We are most fortunate to be gaining someone with such exceptional talent and experience in leading the prosecution of an array of criminal cases including violent criminal enterprises, white collar crimes, international crimes and public corruption,” said U.S. Attorney David Rivera. “Jack’s leadership ability and prosecutorial experience will greatly enhance our current staff of exceptional prosecutors the office.”

 

Smith has been the Chief of the Public Integrity Section in Washington, D.C. since 2010, where he has lead a team of 30 prosecutors in litigating complex public corruption cases throughout the United States, including the conviction yesterday of former CIA Officer Jeffrey Sterling, for illegally disclosing national defense information and obstructing justice. Smith’s unit also recently secured bribery and extortion convictions of former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell and racketeering, bribery and extortion convictions of former Arizona U.S. Representative Rick Renzi.

 

Before taking the helm of the Public Integrity Section, Smith served as the investigation coordinator for the Office of the Prosecutor with the International Criminal Court, where he lead the investigative teams conducting international investigations of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

 

Smith previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of New York from 1999-2008, where he held increasing responsible positions including Chief of the Criminal Litigation Unit. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office he was a prosecutor in the New York County District Attorney’s Office for five years. Smith is a 1994 graduate of Harvard Law School.

 

“I have had the extraordinary privilege of working for the American people in a variety of offices and alongside some of the most dedicated public servants,” said Smith. “I look forward to beginning the next chapter and serving the people of the Middle District of Tennessee as we continue the great work of this office in seeking justice for our constituents.”

‘Peace is unlikely in the near future’: Here’s what Russian experts think about Ukraine’s much-hyped counteroffensive

Six viewpoints on how Kiev’s operation is going and what it means for the future of the conflict

 

Conflicting information about the long-awaited and much-hyped counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) is coming from the front line. According to some reports, Kiev’s army has not met with much success on the battlefield.

 

Here, a group of leading analysts assess what we know about the current situation, approximately ten days since the operation began.

 

Sergey Khrapach, security expert, Reserve Russian Federal Security Service officer:

 

At the present moment, when the AFU still hasn’t inflicted its main blow, it is pointless to make presumptions. War is a rather exact science. If, as a result of strikes in multiple directions, the AFU manages to find weak spots in the Russian Army’s defense and delivers an attack that breaks through, then I see no visible prospects for resolving the conflict. Ukraine aims to liberate its territories within 1991 state borders, but most likely, peace will only be possible after establishing the borders defined as of March 2022, or similar. Meanwhile, the considerable military potential of both sides makes it impossible to just freeze the conflict at this stage.

 

Oleg Ivanov, Head of the Center for the Settlement of Social Conflicts in Moscow:

 

Of course, it is still too early to say that the Ukrainian counteroffensive has fallen through. This is just the beginning– the AFU has large supplies of Western military equipment and it will take some time to destroy it. Moreover, I believe that at the NATO summit on June 15, the Alliance will decide to increase military aid to Ukraine, possibly providing it with F-16 fighter jets, more tanks, and long-range missiles. So, in the near future, we should expect the AFU to intensify attempts to break through the front line. Otherwise, its chances of ‘pushing Russia back’ by autumn will be close to zero.

Acting U.S. Attorney Jack Smith Announces Depature From DOJ

Acting U.S. Attorney Jack Smith today, announced his departure from the Department of Justice, effective in September. Smith has been the Acing U.S. Attorney since David Rivera resigned in March of this year.

 

Smith has been a prosecutor with the Department of Justice for 16 years, having served as the head of the Public Integrity Section in D.C. for 5 years, prior to coming to Nashville in 2015 to serve as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney.

 

Though not looking to leave the department of Justice, Smith said he had been offered an incredible opportunity and after much consideration, he had decided to leave the DOJ.

 

“This was one of the most difficult professional decisions that I have ever been faced with,” said Smith. “I truly love representing the American people and seeking justice on their behalf. I will profoundly miss the close relationships I have developed with the exceptional public servants in our office, as well as the consummate professionals of our law enforcement community. While I am leaving the Department of Justice, I remain committed to our serving our community here in Nashville in other ways in the coming years.”

 

 

Smith will remain in the office until early September.
