Wagner Group was fully funded by Russia – Putin

Evgeny Prigozhin earned billions of rubles from government contracts while using state money to pay fighters, Vladimir Putin said

 

The Wagner Group was fully dependent on state support, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with the country’s military in the Kremlin on Tuesday. The private military company’s fighters were supplied and paid by the Defense Ministry and the state budget, he added.

 

Between May 2022 and May 2023, the Russian authorities allocated 86.26 billion rubles ($1.04 billion) for wages and incentive paymentsfor the Wagner fighters, the president revealed.

 

Meanwhile, Wagner founder Evgeny Prigozhin, who also co-owns the Concord catering company, earned billions of rubles on state contracts, Putin added.

 

“When the upkeep of the Wagner Group rested on the shoulders of the state, the Concord owner received… 80 billion rubles ($960 million) from the state in a year by supplying food products to the army,” the president said.

 

“I hope that no one stole anything while fulfilling these [contracts],” he continued, adding that the authorities would “certainly dig into it.”

 

Last Friday, Prigozhin sent his Wagner Group to march towards large Russian cities with the stated goal of removing several generals whom he accused of treason. Several military aircraft were shot down during the rebellion.

 

The mutiny ended the following day through the mediation of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.Prigozhin explained the decision as a desire to avoid major bloodshed. Putin stated that the authorities would not prosecute Prigozhin or his troops, and invited Wagner fighters join the regular Russian military. Alternatively, they will be allowed to leave active service or follow Prigozhin to Belarus, which has agreed to host him. (So Prigozhin knew of a plot in Russia and he revealed it, “he did it to avoid bloodshed“ means “whoever was responsible” did want Russians to fight Russians. Note Putin has not mention Prigozhin’s name as responsible in any speech. He didn’t even mention his name above he said “the Concord owner”.)

 

On Tuesday, Putin praised the Russian army and security officers for preventing a “civil war.” The response allowed all critical defenses and government systems to continue operating, the president added.

Western services ‘inspired’ Wagner revolt – Russian national guard head

A barrage of “planted leaks” from Evgeny Prigozhin’s camp came ahead of the uprising, the official said

 

Western nations must have helped businessman Evgeny Prigozhin organize his brief insurrection last week, according to Viktor Zolotov, commander of the National Guard of Russia.

 

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday on the sidelines of a ceremony at the Kremlin awarding decorations, the senior official expressed certainty thatthe mutiny “was inspired by Western special services, because, as they said, they knew about it several weeks ahead of time.”

 

Media reports claimed that the US intelligence community had prior knowledge about possible trouble coming from Prigozhin and his private military company Wagner Group. Washington has vehemently denied any involvement in the turmoil, which it called a domestic Russian affair.

 

Zolotov claimedthat “Prigozhin’s camp” has been deliberately leaking “focused” information about a possible mutinycoming sometime between last Thursday and Sunday. He suggested that Western agents may have been directly involved in conducting the operation.(leaking to notify Putin the “grift” was on? Why would they leak if it was a real mutiny?)

 

The mutiny started on Friday evening and dissolved the next day when Prigozhin accepted a Belarus-mediated deal with the Russian government. Wagner troops had entered the city of Rostov-on-Don and were on the move towards Moscow by the time the insurrection was aborted.

 

The national-guard commander said his troops were preparing for intensive battles outside the Russian capital, which would have been bloody encounters.

 

“At that point we were concentrating our forces at the outskirts of Moscow.If we dispersed them, [Wagner troops] could have sliced through like a knife through butter,” he recalled. (There was one truck video’d with Prigozhin and someone elsetraveling to Moscow, how could they have sliced through? This story gets crazier daily. They are admitting Moscow is unprotected? Ridiculous!)

 

Zolotov suggested that the experience proves thatguardsmen should have heavier weapons at their disposal, such as tanks.(oh, thats why he did this interview)

 

Wagner, which played a significant role in the special military operation against Ukraine, has tanks, anti-aircraft systems and even strike aircraft. The force will reportedly hand over these arms as part of the post-mutiny arrangement, which also requires any soldier that wishes to continue service to join the ranks of regular Russian units.

Billionaire and philanthropist James Crown died Sunday in a car crash while on a racetrack in Colorado.

The Colorado Sun reported that Crown, 70, died Sunday after his vehicle hit a barrier on a racetrack at Aspen Motorsports Park in Woody Creek, Colo., Sunday, which was also his birthday. According to the Colorado Sun, the coroner ruled that Crown’s death was an accident and that “multiple blunt force trauma” was evident as the autopsy remains pending.

Crown had also served on JPMorgan’s board since the early 1990s and was also a board director at General Dynamics. Crown, who lived in Chicago, was also the managing partner of Aspen Skiing Co. based in Colorado, according to CNN.

In recent months JP Morgan has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

In June, JP Morgan agreed to a $290 million settlement with Epstein victims for conducting business with convicted pedophile Jeffery Epstein despite him being flagged as a “high-risk client.”

Kiev explains slow counteroffensive – Politico

Ukrainian officials blame Russian air power, minefields, even bad weather for impeding its advances on the battlefield

 

Kiev has allegedly insisted that there have beenno purposeful delays on its partin regards to the much-heralded counteroffensive, as its Western backers have supposedly grown frustrated with the slow progress of the operation, Politico reported on Monday.

 

According to the outlet, Ukrainian officials have stressed that they wish their operation could move faster but pointed the finger at factors such as theeffectiveness of Russian aircraft, minefields and bad weatherin trying to explain why their armed forces have failed to make notable progress.

 

“We’re still moving forward in different parts of the front line,” Yuri Sak, an adviser to Ukrainian Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov, told Politico. “Earlier it was not possible to assess the solidity of the Russian defenses,”he added, noting that “only now that we are doing active probing operations, we get a better picture. The obtained information will be factored into the next stages of our offensive operations.”

 

Nevertheless, Politico claims thatKiev’s backersin Washington and in Europeare unhappy with the slow paceof the operation and are allegedly demanding that Ukrainiantroops hurry upand make significant battlefield gains soon. (Down to the last Ukrainian is the true goal)

Kiev and its Western backers have been assessing how to take advantage of the“window” of opportunity caused by the abandoned rebellion launched in Russia by Wagner PMC chief Evgeny Prigozhin over the weekend.

 

Officially, however, Washington has maintained silence on the Wagner mutiny. According to a report by Axios on Tuesday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has reportedly demanded that his staff refrain from commenting on the incident and only say that the US is monitoring the situation.

Ukrainian victory is ‘impossible’ – Orban

The nature of Western cooperation with Kiev during the conflict has been a failure, the Hungarian leader says

 

The idea that Western military aid would enable Ukraine to defeat Russia on the battlefield is wrong, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said.

 

“I stand on the grounds of reality.The reality is that the nature of cooperation between Ukraine and the West is a failure,” Orban said in an interview with German tabloid Bild on Tuesday.

 

Suggesting that the weapons, funding and intelligence being provided to Kiev by the US and its EU allies would allow Ukraine to win “is a misunderstanding of the situation. That’s impossible,” he argued.

 

“The problem is that the Ukrainians will run out of soldiers earlier than the Russians, and this will be the deciding factor eventually,” the prime minister said.

 

He rejected the interviewer’s contention that all of Ukraine would have been captured by Russia without NATO aid, describing this as “a hypothesis to which there’s no evidence.”

 

According to Orban, aceasefire must be reached in the conflictbetween Moscow and Kiev as soon as possible or Ukraine will “lose a huge amount of wealth and many lives, and unimaginable destruction will happen.That’s why peace is the only solution at this moment.”

 

However, he saidfighting would not stop until Kiev’s main backer, Washington, decides that there should be peace.

 

“What really matters is what Americans want to do.Ukraine is no longer a sovereign country. They don’t have any money. They have no weapons. They can only fight because we in the West support them,” the Hungarian leader explained.

 

He criticized EU sanctions imposed on Moscow over the conflict, saying they failed in both “bringing Russia to its knees” and in achieving peace in Ukraine.“Sanctions have not worked. I am surprised thatwe turned out to be incapableof formulating them appropriately, “he said.

 

Budapest has been one of the few EU capitals to maintain business relations with Moscow because it was “good for the Hungarian people,” Orban said. “I’m fighting for Hungary. I don’t care about [Russia’s President Vladimir] Putin. I don’t care about Russia. I take care of Hungary.”

The Orion 5 - 9 (RIO 5 - 9) satellites, which are generally known as 'Advanced Orion' or 'Mentor', are geostationary signals intelligence satellites, which replaced the earlier Mission 7600 Magnum / Orion series. Their purpose is to intercept missile telemetry from Russia and China and the COMINT capability of the Mission 7500 Mercury satellites was merged into this series. These satellites are launched under the designation Mission 8300.

 

Although this satellite series was originally designed for FISINT (Foreign Instrumentation Signals Intelligence), they are now primarily used as COMINT collectors, with about 85% of their work is againt COMINT targets. Some were collocated with Thuraya mobile communications satellites to tap into the satellite mobile phone communications of this system.

 

These satellites feature a large dish antenna for signal reception, which has reportedly a diameter of ~100 m. The main body has the shape of an octagonal prism, carrying an large array of different antennas, among them a smaller deployable dish. The combination of fixed and steerable feeds allows simultaneous collection againt multiple signal types (COMINT, ELINT, MASINT, etc.) located across a broad geographic aera. The satellites of this series are injected directly into the final orbit by the launch vehicle's upper stage, so they do not feature an apogee propulsion system.

 

The 8300 satellites feature increased bandwith channels and downlink capacity for wideband collection, espacially TECHELINT from modern modulation emitters. Also they add an dedicated second dish antenna for ELINT, test range surveillance and signal search. The satellites in conjunction with the Mission 8200 satellites provide high-accuracy OPELINT geolocation capability through cross-site and cross-system operations. By merging the tasks of Missions 7500 and 7600, a common high sensitivity spacecraft design can be used, which has the capability to relocate as required providing flexile crisis and contingency support.

Wagner to hand over heavy weapons – Russian MOD

A planned transfer has been announced by the military in the wake of last week’s insurrection

 

The Russian Defense Ministry has announced preparations for the handover of heavy weapons from the Wagner private military company to units of the national Armed Forces.

 

A brief statement posted by the ministry on social media on Tuesday confirmed the plan but offered no further details on the arms transfer. The Wagner Group currently has many of the same weapons as regular troops, including tanks, anti-aircraft systems and attack aircraft. Some of them were used by the contractors during their short-lived mutiny last weekend.

 

Last Friday, Wagner chief Evgeny Prigozhin accused senior Russian military figures of treason and sent his troops towards major cities in Russia, including the capital, with the stated goal of having the officials removed from service. The mutiny ended the following day, when the businessman accepted a Belarus-mediated deal with Moscow, including immunity from prosecution for him and Wagner personnel.

 

The insurrection was not bloodless, as Wagner soldiersshot down several Russian military aircraft, while their convoy rolled down the M4 highway.Details on those losses remain murky, but President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the deaths of military pilots during in his address to the nation on Monday. There have beenunconfirmed claims that Prigozhin has offered to pay compensation to families of the slain service members. (Russia has never released pictures of any of the helos that were shot down, are they going to release the names of the dead pilots? Hmm details remain murky? How could that be?)

 

Putin has offered Wagner troops the choice of joining the Russian military or law enforcement agencies, retiring from active duty, or following Prigozhin to Belarus, which has agreed to host them.

As Stevenson tried to hold back his tears, he added, "But I do feel like I let her down. I look back at that last two months and go 'What could I have done differently?"'

Evaluating the energy consumption of flapping-wing flying robots

 

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, have already proved to be highly promising for tackling numerous real-world problems, for instance allowing users to take aerial images, monitor remote or natural environments, deliver parcels, or assisting agents during search and rescue missions and military operations. While these systems are already being used by many companies and individuals worldwide, they can have significant limitations, such as a high-power consumption and limited operation times.

 

In recent years, roboticists have thus been exploring the potential of alternative flying robot designs, some of which are inspired by birds, bats, insects, or other animals. Some of the most promising among these designs are so-called flapping-wing robots, which reproduce the movements of a bird's wings to facilitate their flying.

 

Researchers at University of Seville's GRVC Robotics Lab recently carried out a study exploring the possible advantages of flapping-wing robots, particularly in terms of their power consumption. Their paper, published on the arXiv pre-print server, examines the potential energy savings associated with flapping-wing robot designs in an experimental setting by assessing the performance of individual components underpinning their functioning.

 

"One of the motivations for exploring flapping-wing aerial robotic systems is to seek energy reduction, by maintaining maneuverability, compared to conventional unmanned aerial systems," Raul Tapia, Alvaro Cesar Satue and their colleagues wrote in their paper. "A Flapping Wing Flying Robot (FWFR) can glide in favorable wind conditions, decreasing energy consumption significantly. In this work, two sets of the FWFR components are analyzed in terms of power consumption: a) motor/electronics components and b) a vision system for monitoring the environment during the flight."

 

In their experiments, Tapia, Satue and their colleagues specifically evaluated the performance of a flapping-wing robot developed by their lab, called E-flap. This robot, introduced two years ago, weighs approximately 500g and can autonomously fly in both indoor and outdoor spaces while flapping its wings, like a bird.

 

The researchers conducted a series of tests to assess the power consumption of the individual components used to build the first prototype of the robot, which include a battery, a motor, servomotors, electronics, artificial wings, a tail, and a connectivity system. The energy consumption of these components was evaluated during the three different phases of the robot's flight—while it was launched, as it ascended and while cruising (i.e., flying at a desired altitude).

 

They found that while launching and ascending, the robot's energy consumption was 52.9%, while during cruising it was 47.1%. They also showed that among the different sensors that would allow the robot to sense its surroundings, event cameras were the most energy efficient. The results of this study could guide the future development of flapping-wing robots by highlighting the components that improve their energy efficiency, prolonging their flight time.

 

"A measurement device is used to record the power utilization of the motors in the launching and ascending phases of the flight and also in cruising flight around the desired height," Tapia, Satue and their colleagues wrote in their paper. "Additionally, an analysis of event cameras and stereo vision systems in terms of energy consumption has been performed. The results provide a first step towards decreasing battery usage and, consequently, providing additional flight time."

I know Egypt—not just through being Egyptian, but through empirical and academic knowledge as well.

 

The Muslim Brotherhood was formed in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, an elementary school teacher. The organization’s stated aim was to overthrow British Imperialism and establish an Islamic state in Egypt—a state that would eventually encompass the Arab world. Although the British have since departed, the remaining goal has never changed.

 

The Muslim Brotherhood initially cooperated with the “free officers” of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, which overthrew King Farouk and eventually the British. But from that moment on, the relationship between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Egyptian Army switched from cooperation to rivalry. It was a matter of “who will swallow whom.” President Gamal Abdel Nasser imprisoned most of the Muslim Brotherhood leadership, tortured others, and put some to death.

 

Many years later, Hosni Mubarak, the third successor to Nasser, came to power. Mubarak, head of the Egyptian Air Force during the 1973 war with Israel, took over in 1981 after an Egyptian Islamic Jihadist assassinated his predecessor, Anwar Sadat.

 

In dealing with the Muslim Brotherhood, Mubarak implemented what could be called a “bait and switch.” Sometimes he arrested their leaders (including recent president Mohammed Morsi). Other times he allowed them to occupy up to 25 percent of the seats in the Egyptian parliament—all along knowing that he couldn’t trust their deadly ideology.

 

But in January 2011, when the young college-educated masses took to the streets in Cairo, Alexandria, and other cities, the Muslim Brotherhood had to figure out how to respond. At first they stayed on the sidelines, fearing that if those “democracy ideologues” failed, then the Mubarak regime would come after them. But after the secularly-educated young adults succeeded (after paying a heavy price) in ousting Mubarak, the Muslim Brotherhood then jumped on the bandwagon, claiming the revolution as their own.

 

And who was there to encourage the Muslim Brotherhood? It was none other than the American administration.

'Game Over': Ex-Prosecutor Has Dire Prediction For Trump After Shocking New Audio

 

Former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann said new audio of Donald Trump admitting he had classified documents after leaving the White House is extremely bad news for the former president’s defense.

 

“This is game over if you are following the facts and the law,” Weissmann told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell. “He’s charged with having classified information and knowing that he had classified information.”

 

The recording, he said, makes it “absolutely clear” that both elements are true, and added that the audio is just one piece of “a massive mountain of evidence” against the former president.

 

Trump pleaded not guilty earlier this month after he was indicted on 37 counts related to the alleged mishandling of classified documents as well as obstructing government efforts to get that material back.

 

Weissmann said the case is no longer about the facts so much as whether the trial takes place before the election and whether a jury will follow the law when that trial does take place.

The Washington D.C., government is sending personalized text messages todrivers with a history of traffic violations and crashes, in an attempt to reduce reckless driving and rising traffic fatalities. (won’t that cause accidents if they get it while driving?)

 

“Targeting messages to higher-risk drivers is an innovative approach to help us improve safety for all our roadway users, especially for our most vulnerable users – children and pedestrians,” said D.C. Department of Transportation Director Everett Lott. (Why not penalize them with jail time?)

 

The department and The Lab @ D.C., will send messages to alist of 100,000 drivers, warning them to follow speed limits and obey traffic signs.

 

The list consists of D.C. area drivers,including ones from neighboring stateswith infractions in the city who received two or more citations in the last 18 months.

 

The list was compiled using D.C. police data, automated traffic cameras, local crash data and license plate identification, says Sam Quinney, director at The Lab @ D.C.

 

The program is the latest attempt from the city to make the roads safer, after increasing fines for traffic violations, restrictions on turns and lower speed limits did little to curb the rate of crashes and deaths, according to The Washington Post.

 

Some drivers will receive a mailer and text message, while others will be contacted using only one method or not be contacted at all. The first round of messaging is expected to start in as soon as two weeks, and drivers have the option to opt out of future messages.

 

The Lab @ D.C. has launched similar programs with other city agencies, which include identifying where D.C. residents are most likely to encounter rodents and reminding families to reapply for rent subsidy benefits. Mailers noticeably improved the rate at which families reapplied for benefits, researchers say.

 

The program is part of the larger Vision Zero D.C. initiative, which pledged eight years ago to end city traffic deaths by 2024. Officials are expected to release a revised plan by next year, due to traffic deaths increasing since Vision Zero D.C.’s launch.

 

Twenty-four traffic-related deaths have occurred in D.C. this year, an increase of eight deaths compared to this time last year, according to D.C. police data. Fatal crashes however decreased from 40 deaths in 2021, the most in the city since 2007.

 

City officials couldn’t provide an exact cost of the program, but said funding will come from Vision Zero’s total budget. Officials said the messaging program’s expenses are low compared to other traffic-safety initiatives like changing roads.

 

“It allows us to have a greater impact at a lesser cost,” Quinney said. “So, if they have an impact and reduce crashes, that becomes another tool in our tool kit.”

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled against North Carolina Republicans, who were fighting for a congressional map that would be in their favor.

 

The justices ruled 6-3, withChief Justice John Roberts and Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett siding with the court's three liberal members.

 

The U.S. Supreme Court sided with the North Carolina Supreme Court, which had concluded that the district map constituted a partisan gerrymander.

 

In its decision Tuesday, the high court declined to embrace the so-called "independent state legislature" theory, which Republicans argued limits state courts from being able to strike down some election laws.

 

The Supreme Court has made decisions against state legislatures in two other cases involving congressional maps this year in Louisiana and Alabama. However, those cases involved minority voting districts, rather than the power of state courts.

Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz announced on Monday that they would attempt to use a congressional procedure todefund the office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) directoramid allegations that theagency has repeatedly exceeded its statutory authority.

 

In a letter to House Appropriations Committee Chairman Kay Granger, the pair announced their intent to use the Holman Rule to defund the office in thenext appropriations cycle. The Daily Caller first reported on the letter.

 

"The ATF has even made it a matter of official policy toshut down gun storesby making perfection the standard in record keeping – a standard the ATF itself could not meet," they wrote. "Since the Biden Administration has announced its new 'zero tolerance' policy in 2021,Federal Firearms Licensees have faced the highest revocation rate in 16 years."
