Three Reasons Why Military Recruitment Is In Crisis

 

By the middle of 2022, it was already become apparent that the US military was having problems meeting recruitment goals. In August last year, The AP reported that the Army would have to cut force size, and an army spokesman admitted the Army was facing "'unprecedented challenges' in bringing in recruits." This came even with new larger enlistment bonuses. The problem, however, wasn't as acute for the Air Force, Navy, or Marine Corps.

 

Since then, things haven't gotten any better for recruiters. Now, recruitment shortfalls have spread well beyond the Army. The New York Post reported last week:

 

Much of the military will fall short of recruitment goals by as much as 25% this year …

 

The Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard are all expected to fall short of their recruitment goals this year, they told The Post. …

 

A spokesperson for the Air Force said they will likely miss their goal of 26,877 new recruits by 10%. The Coast Guard said they will likely only fill 75% of the number of full-time, non-commissioned recruits they need.

 

And as of April, the Navy, which has over 300,000 active duty personnel, was behind by 6,000 new recruits this year, and the Army by 10,000 out of their 65,000 goal.

Donald Trump says Melania will be on the campaign trail 'when it's appropriate'

Former President Donald Trump says that his wife, former first lady Melania Trump, will be campaigning for his 2024 presidential run "when it's appropriate."

 

Trump, speaking in an interview with NBC News's Kristen Welker, said that his wife will hit the campaign trail "pretty soon" after not making appearances at his campaign events since he announced his 2024 candidacy in November 2022.

 

“When it’s appropriate, but pretty soon,” Trump said during a clip from the interview, which aired on NBC's Today on Friday.

 

“She’s a private person, a great person, very confident person and she loves our country very much. She’ll be at the appropriate time she’ll be out there. Honestly, I like to keep her away from it — it’s so nasty and so mean,” he continued

 

The former president said that Melania Trump has been with his youngest son, Baron, in the meantime.

 

Unlike in previous presidential campaigns, Trump's family has not been as present on the campaign trail at events and rallies. Trump's sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. have promoted their father's 2024 presidential campaign, but Ivanka Trump decided against campaigning for her father this time around.

 

"I love my father very much. This time around, I am choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating as a family. I do not plan to be involved in politics. While I will always love and support my father, going forward I will do so outside the political arena," Ivanka Trump said shortly after her father announced his 2024 presidential bid.

 

Trump is the clear front-runner in the Republican primary, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average, leading his next closest opponent, DeSantis, by more than 40 percentage points.

Or so the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) alerted millions of Americans via social media, midway through the COVID-19 pandemic. The agency had discerned that some people were treating their symptoms using the animal version of a drug called ivermectin. FDA decided to target the practice via the “horse” message—and others like it. The messaging traveled widely across legacy and online media. Left unmentioned in most of that messaging: ivermectin also comes in a human version. And while the human version of ivermectin is not FDA-approved to treat the coronavirus, some people were using it off-label for that purpose.

China shows its structural weakness with response to disappearing ministers

Imagine if Secretary of State Antony Blinkensuddenly disappeared. The State Department first said he was ill. Then Biden replaced Blinken without comment. As the days and weeks passed, the Biden administration simply refused to comment. Months later, we have no more information as to where Blinken is and what led him to disappear. Now imagine that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin suddenly disappeared. Imagine that officials are only saying that they know nothing about what's happened, even though the nature of his position means that some must know something.

 

That's exactly akin to what has happened in China over the past few months.

 

First,Foreign Minister Qin Gang disappeared without a trace in July. He hasn't been seen since. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has offered no details on his whereabouts or reason for them. It says only that Wang has been replaced by his hawkish predecessor, Wang Yi. Now Defense Minister Li Shangfu has disappeared. According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. officials believe Li has been removed from office. Whatever the cause, Li's departure is deeply embarrassing for Xi Jinping. The all-powerful president only ascended Li to the powerful Central Military Commission last October.

 

Asked about Li's disappearance on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said she didn't know anything about it. But while it may technically be true that Mao doesn't know where Li has gone, when Chinese officials stick with the refrain, "I know nothing," they only underline the authoritarian secrecy that so defines their government. This is a problem for Beijing as it claims to offer only trustworthy "win-win cooperation" with the world. U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel has rightly drawn attention to Beijing's lack of transparency, observing that line from Shakespeare's Hamlet, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark."

 

The deeper problem for Beijing is that its secrecy on these disappearances is only the tip of the iceberg. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokespersons often resort to snarky short rebukes when asked legitimate but uncomfortable questions. This can often become absurd. On Friday, for example, AFPasked about Chinese espionage in the U.K., to which the reply was: "We’ve already made clear China’s position on this issue earlier. The allegation that China spies on the U.K. is entirely groundless. We have no interest in and will not interfere in the U.K.’s internal affairs."

 

Considering that Chinese espionage targeting the U.K. ranges widely across domains of intellectual property theft, political subversion, agent recruitment, cyber activity, and beyond, Mao's "entirely groundless" assertion is prima facie absurd. Everyone with a brain knows it. But the Foreign Ministry's impulse toward evasiveness and hostility underlines the Chinese Communist Party's reflexive inability to accept perceived vulnerability. Officials fear that to do otherwise might undermine the party, which is the ultimate red line for any apparatchik such as Mao.

 

Of course, by adopting such a disingenuous stance with the international community, China ultimately achieves that same undermining result anyway.By appointing, promoting, and then "disappearing" officials in short order, Xi also looks to be either vulnerable or incompetent. And he breeds the perception that Beijing, fundamentally, cannot be trusted.

Ukrainian military's official spokersperon, Sarah Ashton-Cirillo (formerly Michael John Cirillo), has released an emotionally charged video message on X, threatening Russian and pro-Russian journalists with violence.

Smearing and dehumanizing targeted reporters as "war criminal propagandists" Ashton-Cirillo claimed that they will be "hunted down" and then "justice will be served."

The speaker particularly hinted that "next week" the world will see Moscow's "favorite criminal propagandist" "pay" for Russia's "crimes."

 

While Ashton-Cirillo did not name the alleged victim, some Russian bloggers assumed that the speaker meant RT and Sputnik Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan, who earlier received death threats from Ukrainian nationalists.

In August 2022, the Ukrainian neo-Nazi Azov Battalion* sent a letter to Simonyan saying that they had "sentenced" her "to death" for supporting Russia's military operation in Ukraine. In July 2023, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that it had detained members of a neo-Nazi group plotting to kill the Russian journalist.

The Kiev regime and the country's nationalist battalions are well known for suppressing the freedom of speech and persecuting Ukrainian and foreign journalists.

Ukraine's infamous Mirotvorets website maintains a "kill list" containing personal data of dissenting reporters, politicians, opposition figures, bloggers, and even children, who are labeled "enemies of Ukraine."

States Beg Biden to Bolster Offshore Wind While Projects Flounder

Six US governors have implored President Joe Biden to boost support for the fledgling offshore wind industry amid growing concerns that surging costs imperil multi-billion dollar projects planned for coastal Atlantic waters and the nation’s climate goals.

 

The governors, including those from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey, made their plea in a letter to Biden obtained by Bloomberg News. It follows recent lobbying by Orsted A/S to claim bonus tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act, with the Danish company warning that without additional support to offset rising costs and supply chain hurdles, it could “walk away” from some of its US offshore wind projects.

 

“Absent intervention, these near-term projects are increasingly at risk of failing,” the governors said in the letter dated Wednesday. “Without federal action, offshore wind deployment in the US is at serious risk of stalling because states’ ratepayers may be unable to absorb these significant new costs alone.”

 

States are already under pressure to renegotiate power purchase agreements that were inked before a runup in costs for everything from financing for offshore wind farms to the towers, turbines and foundations needed to support them. Shell Plc, Avangrid Inc., and other companies are paying tens of millions of dollars to exit contracts, while Equinor ASA and BP Plc asked New York to approve a 54% price increase for power from two of their projects.

 

But the governors warn “offshore wind faces cost increases in orders of magnitude that threaten states’ ability to make purchasing decisions.” Failed projects would threaten not just state deployment goals but also further challenge Biden’s bid to get 30 gigawatts of offshore wind production capacity installed by the end of the decade.

 

The Biden administration must act urgently and “utilize every federal tool available” to keep offshore wind projects competitive, the governors wrote. Their top request is for updated Treasury Department guidance that makes clear offshore wind projects will be “fully eligible” for new clean energy tax credits, including bonus incentives under last year’s sweeping climate law.

 

To ensure offshore wind projects “are able to move forward in the current economic climate,” they argue the Treasury Department must provide “achievable pathways” to qualify for those added tax credits, including a bonus credit of as much as 10% that’s tied to the use of domestically manufactured equipment. Using some made-in-the-US equipment is challenging as domestic offshore-wind supply chains still need to be cultivated.

 

The governors also argue the US government can do more to help by streamlining the permitting of offshore wind projects and sharing revenue tied to offshore wind leasing that otherwise is funneled into federal coffers.
