Canadian university ‘regrets’ fund named after Ukrainian Nazi

 

The University of Alberta has closed an endowment amid controversy over a Waffen SS fighter who was honored in Ottawa’s parliament

 

Fallout over the Canadian parliament’s veneration of a Ukrainian veteran of the Waffen SS has spread to the University of Alberta, which apologized and shut down an endowment fund named after the Nazi collaborator just hours after Russian diplomats exposed his connection to the school.

 

The university admitted on Wednesday night that it had an endowment named after Yaroslav Hunka, the 98-year-old Ukraine native who was given standing ovations by Canadian lawmakers during Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s visit to parliament on Friday. The incident became an international embarrassment for Ottawa, leading to the resignation of House Speaker Anthony Rota, after it was revealed that Hunka fought on the side of the Nazis during World War II.

 

Hunka’s family donated $30,000 in 2019 to establish an endowment, named after him and his wife, at the University of Alberta’s Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies. Russia’s ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, told RIA Novosti that the embassy discovered Hunka’s link to the university and publicized the odious connection on social media. A few hours later, the school announced the cancellation.

 

“After careful consideration of the complexities, experiences, and circumstances of those impacted by the situation, we have made the decision to close the endowment and return the funds to the donor,” university provost Verna Yiu said in a statement. “The university recognizes and regrets the unintended harm caused.”

 

The school is now in the process of revising its general naming policies and procedures, including those for endowments, “to ensure alignment with our values,” Yiu added.

 

The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) welcomed the announcement that the Hunka endowment was being shut down. “Unfortunately, this is only one example of endowments at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies named after members of the Waffen SS,” FSWC official Dan Panneton said.

 

Hunka was a volunteer in the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, a Ukrainian unit that committed atrocities against Jews and Poles on the Eastern Front. Russia may request extradition of Hunka, based on an investigation of his potential involvement in war crimes, Stepanov said on Wednesday. Thousands of Ukrainian Nazi fighters were allowed to emigrate to the UK and Canada after World War II, despite their possible participation in atrocities.

How did you learn about the scarcity loop, to begin with?

I started learning about the scarcity loop because I’m really interested in bad habits. My background is in science journalism, and writing about health and wellness. People always focus on building good new habits, but I’ve noticed that if you haven’t fixed your worst habits, you still have your foot on the brake. Basically, bad habits hurt people more than good habits help people. And there’s no better place to see this than Las Vegas, which happens to be where I live. This town is built on getting people to do excessive behaviors that often hurt them in the long run. Slot machines are the weirdest. They’re everywhere and people play them around the clock. I started digging into what makes slot machines so appealing, and that eventually led me to interview the guy who designed them. He’s the person who introduced me to the scarcity loop.

 

Describe it to me. How does it work, and how does it relate to things we do beyond gambling?

It’s like the serial killer of moderation — it’s designed to get us to repeat behaviors over and over and over. It consists of three parts: The first is opportunity, the second is unpredictable rewards, and the third is quick repeatability. To break it down more, you start with an opportunity to get something of value, something that improves your life. In the case of a slot machine, it’s money. Number two is that you have unpredictable rewards. You may get the thing of value at some point, but you don’t know when and you don’t know exactly how valuable it will be. With the slot machine, it could be a dollar, it could be nothing, it could be a million dollars. And then the third part is quick repeatability, meaning you can repeat the behavior immediately. The average slot-machine player plays 16 games in a minute, which is about the same amount of times that we blink. The loop feeds itself.

 

Gambling is just one example. The same scarcity-loop design has now been applied to lots of different technologies and things we do in our lives. Social media is one; there’s easy opportunity, uncertain rewards — what am I going to see next, how will people respond to my post — and quick repeatability. Robinhood, the investing app, blew up because it increased quick repeatability with stock trading. And it’s also how dating apps work. You swipe, swipe, swipe, match — opportunity, unpredictable rewards, and quick repeatability.

 

But then, how do you break the loop and stop it?

Part of it is to understand why you’re doing it in the first place. People don’t do anything that is irrational; the scarcity loop evolved to help us. The reason we do almost anything is that it rewards us in some way. As an outside observer, when I look at slot machine players in Vegas, I think, “That doesn’t make any sense to me. They’re just losing money.” But to them, it does make sense, on some level. Maybe it’s giving them entertainment. Or it’s providing an escape from whatever they want to escape from.

 

I also don’t want to shame anyone for this. People do things that give them a benefit, even if it’s a small one. It becomes a problem when the short term benefit comes with a bunch of long-term downfalls. For example, most people who gamble aren’t addicted to it; they’re just having a good time. But I think a lot of people can identify something that they do repeatedly that’s counterproductive, or that they wish they did less of. It’s a sliding scale. Like, I don’t know many people who would say, “I’m spending the perfect amount of time on my phone.” And once you become more aware of why you’re doing this, and the formula that’s at play, you can tweak it or change it.

Anon was single dad for 10 years, but did not home school.

Docs: DOJ Investigators Ordered to 'Remove Any Reference' to Joe Biden

 

An email released Wednesday by the House Ways and Means Committee shows Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley Wolf ordered investigators in August 2020 to remove any reference to “Political Figure 1” from a search warrant. A document subsequently released showed that President Joe Biden is “Political Figure 1.”

 

“As a priority, someone needs to redraft attachment B,” Wolf wrote in an email. “I am not sure what this is cut and pasted from but other than the attribution location, and identity stuff at the end, none of it is appropriate and within the scope of this warrant.”

 

“Please focus on FARA [Foreign Agents Registration Act] evidence only. There should be nothing about Political Figure 1 in here,” she added.

 

A second document the committee released Wednesday showed “Political Figure 1” is “Former Vice President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.”

The committee also released information from a May 2021 report generated by IRS investigators that noted Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Kevin Morris, could have committed campaign finance violations — which Wolf told investigators to ignore. “There may be campaign finance criminal violations based on interviews and a review of the evidence,” Wolf allegedly stated. But a Department of Justice (DOJ) official told the investigators to ignore the allegation, noting she was not “personally interested,” IRS whistleblower handwritten notes show:

The fact that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has been thought to have originated from wildlife and may have “jumped” into humans, not only highlights future risks from animal-borne diseases but also provides an important clue to its resolution. In such a scenario, where this “jump” has been made from animal to human, it seems only logical to review a drug that has worked efficiently against a disease-causing agent and is available in a form that is safe for human consumption since the early 1980s.

 

Ivermectin belongs to a group of avermectins, which is a group of 16 membered macrocyclic lactone compounds discovered at the Japanese Kitasato Institute in 1967 during actinomycetes cultures with Streptomyces avermitilis [2]. This drug radically lowered the incidence of river blindness and lymphatic filariasis and was discovered and developed by William C. Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura for which they received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015 [3, 4]. Ivermectin is enlisted in the World Health Organization’s Model List of Essential Medicines [5].

 

Drug repurposing, drug redirecting, or drug reprofiling is defined as the identification of novel uses for existing drugs. The development risks, costs as well as safety-related failure, are reduced with this approach since these drugs have a well-established formulation development, in vitro and in vivo screening, as well as pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles. Moreover, the first clinical trial phases of many such drugs have been completed and can be bypassed to reduce several years of development. Therefore, drug repurposing has the potential to reduce the time frame for the whole process by up to 3–12 years and carries great potential [6].

 

Although several drugs received emergency use authorization for COVID-19 treatment with unsatisfactory supportive data, ivermectin, on the other hand, has been sidelined. Nevertheless, many countries adopted ivermectin as one of the first-line treatment options for COVID-19.

 

With the ongoing vaccine roll-out programs in full swing across the globe, the longevity of the immunity offered by these vaccines or their role in offering protection against new mutant strains is still a matter of debate. Thus, the search for new, effective antivirals continues.

 

Several doctor-initiated clinical trial protocols that aimed to evaluate outcomes, such as reduction in mortality figures, shortened length of intensive care unit stay and/or hospital stay, and elimination of the virus with ivermectin use have been registered at the US ClinicalTrials.gov [7]. Controlled clinical trials using ivermectin are underway, including one being conducted by the National Institutes of Health (ACTIV-6) [ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04885530] in the USA and a second in the UK (PRINCIPLE) [ISRCTN registry: ISRCTN86534580] [8, 9].g.

Asset Managers Using State Pensions to Push ‘Racial Equity Audits’, Green Energy Schemes

 

Paul Fitzpatrick, the president of the 1792 Exchange, explained in an op-ed on Wednesday that Wall Street asset managers are using state pension funds to advance “racial equity audits,” green energy schemes, and other leftist goals.

 

The 1792 Exchange aims to put a spotlight on companies based on their likeliness that they would impose “woke” positions on clients. In the Washington Examiner, Fitzpatrick explained how Wall Street asset managers manipulate pension funds for publicly listed companies to advance leftist policies.

 

Fitzpatrick noted that the 1792 Exchange maintains a database that tracks the 2022 proxy records of the asset managers who vote on behalf of all 50 states’ pension funds and how BlackRock, State Street, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Franklin Templeton, PIMCO, JPMorgan, Northern Trust, Principal, UBS, Blackstone, and many others treat state pension funds to push “controversial resolutions at major corporations that would implement policies enforcing arbitrary environmental, social, and governance [ESG] goals, racial ‘equity,’ abortion travel benefits, and more.”

 

ESG has become the latest vector through which Wall Street asset managers such as BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street, and others push companies to adopt leftist policies they otherwise would not back. Asset managers often push companies to adopt anti-climate change policies, diversity requirements, and other policies advocating for racial justice. These asset managers use their investors’ proxy votes to push resolutions using their outsized influence in publicly listed companies to back leftist resolutions.

 

Breitbart News has reported on the many instances in which BlackRock has pushed publicly listed companies to advance racial justice and combat alleged climate change.

 

The 1792 Exchange president said this is not a one-off incident; he said they have found hundreds of instances that these asset managers have pushed “third party ‘racial equity audits'” at companies such as Amazon, Apple, Chevron, Home Depot, Wells Fargo using state pension funds.

 

He wrote, “One resolution for shareholders of Walmart would have forced the company to ‘report evaluating any risks and costs to the company associated with new laws and legislation severely restricting reproductive rights.’ Another required Comcast to align its retirement plan options with climate goals.”

 

Fitzpatrick also emphasized that red states such as Texas are not immune. The Texas retirement system voted for a shareholder resolution at Costco that asked the company to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the Paris climate treaty.

 

However, he explained that many states have advanced legislation that would fight back against the manipulation of state pension funds to advance leftist causes:

 

Texas led with the first bill in 2021, prohibiting the state from contracting with companies that boycott the state’s most vital industries, such as oil and gas. It severed ties with asset managers, including BlackRock. In 2022, four states passed some type of anti-ESG legislation. This year, 15 states enacted ESG-related bills, with most on fiduciary duty in pensions or economic boycotts. Some were robust, some weak.

 

Kentucky passed HB236, a strong model requiring that fiduciaries of state retirement systems consider the sole interest of the beneficiaries of the pension plan using only pecuniary factors and prohibiting consideration of nonfinancial interests such as ESG and other ideological interests. This was smart for the pensioners and the state’s entire economy. The S&P 500 Energy (Sector) has outperformed the S&P 500’s ESG Index by a whopping 30% over the past three years, and Kentucky is a coal producer.

 

He noted that other states such as Arkansas, Kansas, Montana, Florida, and West Virginia have passed legislation to regain control over their investments and proxy votes.

 

Fitzpatrick concluded, “State legislators must pass strong bills. And if asset managers in Greenwich want to perform ‘racial equity audits,’ then they can volunteer to perform one for their country club, but they must stop using middle-class retirement funds to vote for ESG goals.”

Rotterdam shooting death toll rises to three as girl, 14, dies

September 28, 2023

The death toll in the Rotterdam hospital shooting rose to three on Thursday evening when a 14-year-old girl died of her injuries.

The girl’s mother died earlier in the afternoon, as did a lecturer at Rotterdam’s Erasmus UMC teaching hospital.

Police have arrested a 32-year-old man, a student at the university, in connection with the shootings.

The killing spree began shortly before 3 pm when the suspect first shot the woman and her daughter and then set fire to one of the apartments in the same building, possibly his own. He lived in a flat “very close” to that of his victims, police said.

The man then went to the Erasmus UMC teaching hospital, some 1.5 kilometres away, and shot dead a 43-year-old lecturer in a classroom. He then moved to another part of the university hospital and set a fire, possibly using a Molotov cocktail.

The man was wearing a bullet proof vest and carrying a gun when he was arrested as he left one of the buildings. Police had said earlier he was arrested on the hospital’s helipad. moar picrel.

Michael Gibson, president of MST, said those older or younger than the targeted age are oblivious to the sound thanks to a simple part of the human anatomy: ear hair cells.

 

"When you’re born, you have a lot of hair cells in your ear and as you grow older, these cells actually die and fall out. So, when they fall out, your frequency range starts to decrease," he said.

 

"So, for example, if you had a mosquito above your head in summer camp when you were younger, you could hear it, but now when you’re older, you might not even hear it until it bites you. The 13-25 year old is what it focuses on, but some people age 40 might hear it simply because they've aged differently. But the majority of people outside of that age range won’t hear it."

 

According to Gibson, the sound that radiates from the device a very high-frequency modulated sound at 17.5 to 18.5 kilohertz is perfectly safe and poses no threat of damage to a person's hearing, even with long-term exposure.

Scientist reveals what the mysterious black dust on the Bennu asteroid sample is likely to be - as NASA halts work until it is formally identified

NASA's adventurous OSIRIS-REx space capsule that delivered a sample of an asteroid about 200 million miles away is already yielding surprises.

 

The agency's staff cracked open the space capsule on Tuesday to discover that the inside of the lid is lined with mysterious black material, forcing them to halt work.

 

Unlike the handful of rocks and dust snatched from the asteroid's surface, the black material looks finer, almost like grime layering a dirty car.

 

NASA said that the material will undergo a 'quick-look analysis' to see what exactly it is, but a scientist has weighed in ahead of the official verdict.

 

Speaking to MailOnline, Dr Brad Tucker, an astrophysicist at Australian National University in Canberra, said the fine dust is also likely material from the asteroid.

 

'The asteroid dirt is very dark, and fine,' Dr Tucker told MailOnline.

 

'When OSIRIS-REx did the original touch-and-go manoeuvre to capture the samples, it had so much the lid could not close.'

 

NASA admitted shortly after the grab in October 2020 that asteroid material was leaking from OSIRIS-REx, because a stone was jammed in the mechanism.

 

'Eventually they sorted it out, so this seems likely to be dust and soil from that,' Dr Tucker added.

 

Professor Trevor Ireland, a geochemist at the University of Queensland, agreed that the black dust was kicked up during the sample collection.

 

'Under microgravity there's nothing to stop dust going everywhere, and probably back on to the spacecraft as well,' he told MailOnline.

 

Since the sample's triumphant return to Earth on Sunday, NASA has only opened the top lid of the capsule, while the rocky handful from Bennu is stashed away in another smaller component within that has to be opened.

 

The precious cargo is an estimated 8.8 ounces, or 250 grams of rocky material – only about half what you'd find in a average-sized box of cereal.

 

But NASA thinks it will be enough to reveal secrets about asteroid composition and 'help us better understand the types of asteroids that could threaten Earth'.

 

The pebbles and dust from Bennu – which could hit the Earth in 2182 – represent the biggest haul from beyond the moon.

Du Pont heir accused of raping 2nd child in lawsuit

 

A du Pont family heir who raped his 3-year-old daughter nearly a decade ago but received no prison time now faces a lawsuit from his former wife that accuses him of sexually abusing his toddler son.

 

Robert H. Richards IV, 47, who is supported by a trust fund and who paid $1.8 million for his 5,800-square-foot mansion near Winterthur Museum, pleaded guilty in 2008 to fourth-degree rape of his daughter. Currently on probation, he has never been charged with crimes against his son.

 

The lawsuit provides in-depth details about a child rape case that Delaware authorities never disclosed publicly and did not receive media attention.

 

Richards is a scion of two prominent Delaware families — the du Pont family who built the chemical empire and the Richards family who co-founded the prestigious corporate law firm Richards Layton & Finger. Du Pont family patriarch Irenee du Pont is his great grandfather. His father, Robert H. Richards III, was a partner in the law firm until his 2008 retirement.

 

Currently unemployed, Richards IV also lists a home in the exclusive North Shores neighborhood near Rehoboth Beach as a residence, according to the state's sex abuse registry.

 

On Tuesday, nearly six years after Richards' felony conviction, his ex-wife, Tracy Richards, filed a Superior Court lawsuit on behalf of her children seeking compensatory and punitive damages for assault, negligence, and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress on his two children. Abuse of the children occurred at both the Greenville and North Shores homes, the lawsuit alleged.

 

Tracy Richards is scheduled to appear at a news conference about the case with her lawyers at their downtown office later Tuesday. She is represented by the Jacobs & Crumplar law firm that sued the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington over sex abuse by priests and with other lawyers won a $77.4 million settlement for victims.

 

The lawsuit claims that Richards raped his daughter, now 11, in 2005 when she was 3. Several times, he entered her bedroom at night while she slept and penetrated her with his fingers while masturbating, said the lawsuit, which includes documents from the criminal case.

 

Richards told the girl "to keep what he had done to her a secret," but in October 2007 she told her grandmother, who informed Tracy Richards, the lawsuit said. The girl was taken to her pediatrician, whom she told about the abuse, and New Castle County police arrested him that December.

 

State Attorney General Beau Biden's office obtained a grand jury indictment charging him with two counts of second-degree rape, a Class B felony that carries a mandatory two-year prison term for each conviction. Delaware law requires a sentence of two to 25 years in prison but sentencing guidelines urge a sentence of two to five years.

And now scientists have discovered secret rooms inside Sahura's Pyramid that could reveal its ancient secrets.

 

A team from Julius-Maximilians-Universität of Würzburg explored the monument as part of a conservation and restoration project.

 

Their investigation uncovered a number of storage rooms that have not been documented before.

 

'This groundbreaking project represents a significant milestone in the understanding of the Sahura pyramid and its historical significance,' the team, led by Dr Mohamed Ismail Khaled said.

 

Sahura's Pyramid was built in the late 26th to 25th century BC for Sahura (also known as Sahure), the second king of the Fifth Dynasty and the first king to be buried at Abusir.

 

Sahura's reign was marked by peace and prosperity, according to Ancient Origins.

 

'Amongst other things, Sahure traded with foreign lands, developed a navy, and opened up mines,' it explained.

 

The pyramid was first excavated in 1836 by John Perring, an engineer working under Colonel Howard Vyse, before being explored further by Egyptologist Ludwig Borchardt in 1907.

 

Now, more than 100 years later, scientists have stepped inside the ancient pyramid once again.

 

The team initially set out to stabilise the pyramid's substructure and prevent it from collapsing.

 

Using 3D laser scanning, they conducted detailed surveys inside the pyramid.

 

This allowed them to create comprehensive maps of both the extensive external areas and the narrow corridors and chambers within.

 

It also uncovered a secret passage that led to eight previously undiscovered store rooms.

 

The ceilings and floors of these rooms are 'badly damaged', and it remains unclear exactly what was stored there.

 

'Although the northern and southern parts of these magazines, especially the ceiling and the original floor, are badly damaged, remnants of the original walls and parts of the floor can still be seen,' the team said.

 

Having disccovered the secret rooms, the team set out to restore them to their former glory.

 

'During restoration, a balance between preservation and presentation was pursued to ensure the structural integrity of the rooms while making them accessible for future study and potentially the public,' they said.

 

The team hopes the findings will help to solve the mysteries that remain about Sahura's Pyramid, including how it was constructed and what was stored in the seceret rooms.

 

'The discovery and restoration of the storerooms is expected to revolutionize the view of historical development of pyramid structures and challenge existing paradigms in the field,' they concluded.

Forever chemicals at former Nasa lab are leaking into LA River, say watchdogs

Two highly toxic chemicals polluting a former Nasa research site are also probably contaminating the Los Angeles River and aquifer from which the region’s agricultural growers draw their water, watchdog groups and a whistleblower charge.

 

The Santa Susana field laboratory about 30 miles north of downtown Los Angeles is already notorious for its radioactive waste, but the site, which is owned by the federal government and Boeing, is also now suspected of leaching polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) “forever chemicals” into the water.

 

Despite evidence of the pollution and pressure from environmental groups to act, state regulators have so far allowed Boeing to continue polluting without a cleanup or proper monitoring for the dangerous chemicals, say the groups.

 

“California’s pollution control agencies are not just asleep at the switch but appear to be in a coma,” said Jeff Ruch, Pacific director of the non-profit Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (Peer), which has filed a lawsuit over the site’s cleanup.

 

PFAS are a class of about 15,000 compounds most frequently used to make products water-, stain- and grease-resistant. The chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects, decreased immunity, high cholesterol, kidney disease and a range of other serious health problems. They are dubbed “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down in the environment.

 

PFAS are the main ingredient in firefighting foam and are used in aerospace applications. Nasa and Boeing tested rockets at Santa Susana before the site’s 2006 closure, so the chemicals were probably employed in high quantities. PCBs are a chemical class that has been banned for over 40 years due to their high toxicity, but were used in industrial applications like electric transformers at Santa Susana.

 

The 2,800-acre site sits between the Simi and San Fernando valleys. Countless nuclear accidents occurred at the site, and residents living nearby have suspected radioactive waste from Santa Susana has sickened them.

 

The PFAS and PCB pollution in the ground probably migrates into the Los Angeles River headwaters. Water from the aquifer below the site is used by farmers in Ventura county and is likely to be contaminating crops, Peer charges.

 

Nasa in January 2021 alerted the California department of toxic substances control that “PFAS-containing materials are documented to have been located in the Nasa administered areas,” which the former recommended “for further investigation”.

 

But the investigation never happened, Ruch said. The Los Angeles regional water board, the state agency that could order monitoring and cleanup, meets on 28 September to consider a five-year pollution discharge permit for the site. A draft order posted on the agency’s website does not include requirements for PFAS and PCB monitoring or cleanup, but a spokesperson for the board told the Guardian the agency decided to add PFAS monitoring to the permit after public input.

 

No cleanup is currently planned, and Ruch said simply monitoring for PFAS is like “waving at the bank robbers as they leave the bank”.

Testing at the mouth of the Los Angeles River has found PCB levels 100 times higher than clean water limits, and in a spot where people frequently fish for sustenance, Ruch said.

 

Regulators have said their testing found no PCBs at Santa Susana, but the state has conducted the wrong kind of test, a Los Angeles Regional Water Board whistleblower and Peer allege.

 

Evidence points to Santa Susana as the PCBs’ source, Ruch said, as all other potential PCB polluters along the river have been accounted for. The whistleblower has told Peer that intra-agency memos and communications show the agency is aware that PCBs are originating at Santa Susana, Ruch said.

 

Peer has tried to obtain those documents through a Freedom of Information Act request, but the agency has not turned them over, Ruch added. It is unclear if the new testing proposed by the water board will include the correct methodology, he said.

 

Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration and Boeing last year struck what Ruch characterized as a “sweetheart cleanup deal” that would only require the company to remove about 10% of the site’s contamination. It superseded a 2007 consent order with the state with more stringent monitoring requirements.

 

The deal, which Ruch said was struck behind closed doors and largely remains shielded from the public, also does not require testing for PFAS or PCBs. Peer and other environmental groups are suing the state to open the full deal to scrutiny, and to force a stricter cleanup.

 

Under the Newsom deal, the land would not be suitable for residential use after cleanup because it would remain so contaminated, the suit alleges.

 

“At the current rate of progress, Santa Susana is going to remain a toxic waste pit into perpetuity,” Ruch said.

Canada knowingly admitted 2,000 Ukrainian SS members after World War II

The Canadian government, with British complicity, admitted more than 2,000 members of a notorious Ukrainian Waffen-SS division in 1950, the Simon Wiesenthal Center has charged.

In a related case, the CBS news program “60 Minutes” reported that about 1,000 SS men and Nazi collaborators, mainly from the Baltic states, immigrated to Canada about the same time.

And the German public broadcasting network reported that 50,000 war criminals are receiving “victim pensions” from the German government. According to German sources, 1,882 of them are Canadian residents.

Canadian officials have acknowledged that almost all the suspected war criminals and Nazi collaborators have lived openly under their own names in Canada for the last 47 years.

The Wiesenthal Center’s dean, Rabbi Marvin Hier, and its Canadian representative, Sol Littman, outlined the case of the 2,000 SS veterans at a news conference Monday after returning from Ottawa. They spoke about their meeting with Canadian Solicitor General Herb Gray, the Cabinet minister in charge of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

“Mr. Gray seemed genuinely disturbed by the material we presented and promised to investigate the charges,” Hier said.

Littman, who has been investigating the Nazi presence in Canada since 1980, said the 14th Volunteer Waffen-SS Grenadier Division, also known as the Galicia Division, was made up mainly of Ukrainians who had served with Nazi police battalions and death squads. The surviving 9,000 members of the division surrendered to the British army at the end of the war, and eventually were brought to England.

In 1950, Britain appealed to Commonwealth countries to admit them. Canada agreed to take 2,000, after receiving assurances from London that their backgrounds had been investigated and that they had been cleared of any complicity in war crimes. But according to recently released British documents and interviews with officials who conducted the investigations at the time, the Ukrainians were not screened, partly because none of the interrogators could speak their language, Littman said.

The 2,000 settled in major Canadian cities, and it is estimated that about half of them are still alive.

One of the ways of getting into Canada during the postwar period “was by showing the SS tattoo,” Canadian historian Irving Abella told “60 Minutes” interviewer Mike Wallace. “This proved that you were an anti-Communist.”

Abella cited his meeting with longtime Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to illustrate the lackadaisical attitude of the Canadian authorities. Trudeau said the reason his government did not go after war criminals “was because they were afraid of exacerbating relationships between Jews and Eastern European ethnic communities,” Abella said. “So he didn’t do anything, and he admitted it quite openly.”

John Sims, the Canadian official in charge of prosecuting war criminals, acknowledged to “60 Minutes” that “Canada did virtually nothing for decades after the Nuremberg trials.” However, Sims promised that “1997 is going to be an important year, in which I think considerable progress will be made in ridding this country of Nazis.”

The latest revelations about suspected war criminals living openly in Canada come in the wake of a Jerusalem Post series in November that described Canada as a “near-blissful refuge” for Nazis. Steven Rambam, a private detective from New York, working with two Post reporters, uncovered the whereabouts of about 150 suspected war criminals living in Canada, often by simply looking up their names in phone books.

Masquerading as a professor from a fictitious Central American university, Rambam, a former member of the Jewish Defense League, obtained secretly taped interviews with a former Lithuanian police chief, who described in chilling detail his part in the execution of 5,000 Jews.

Meanwhile, the German television program Panorama reported last week that 50,000 war criminals and members of army units who participated in atrocities were receiving bonus pensions, ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars each month. These so-called “victim pensions” are paid on top of regular pensions to anyone who suffered from a disability linked to World War II, or to their dependents.

Although a 1950 German law excludes war criminals living abroad from receiving these pensions, the law is apparently not enforced for Canada, or the United States. Elan Steinberg, executive director of the World Jewish Congress, has charged that some 3,300 German veterans living in the United States are receiving pensions.

That discussion then transitioned into one about border security because, as Tapper noted, the Senate compromise bill doesn’t contain funding for border security. Tapper noted that there definitely was a crisis at the border saying, “More than 7.7 million people have fled Venezuela; there’s no sign this is slowing down. Do you agree that something needs to be done about our border?” Tapper then pointed to the busloads of migrants being sent to blue cities by southern governors.

 

Pressley said she disagreed with using people “as political pawns” and that’s when she went off the rails. “No doubt about it, our border is secure and we are in the midst of a humanitarian crisis,” she said. You can actually see a moment of surprise on Tapper’s face when she says this and then he seems to be uncertain if he heard her correctly.

 

“You think the border is secure or it is not secure?” Tapper asked.

 

Pressley then went into a dodge of an answer about needing more federal support for the humanitarian crisis at the border, which wasn’t what Tapper asked. After filibustering for a while, she tried to shrug it off saying “That is a conversation for another day.”

A gun that’s taken apart and missing pieces can still be considered a firearm under state law, Minnesota’s highest court says.

 

In an opinion released Wednesday, the Minnesota Supreme Court upheld a precedential ruling by the state’s appellate court that provides some more clarity on what can be considered a firearm.

The case centered around an Onamia man who was charged with unlawful gun possession after law enforcement officers found parts of an unassembled shotgun inside the man’s backpack in August 2020. Because the man had previously been convicted of a crime of violence, he wasn’t able to legally possess a firearm and was later convicted of a firearm violation for possession of the parts.

 

The man appealed and argued that the unassembled gun — which also was missing a bolt and washer — shouldn’t have been considered a firearm under state law because the gun was disassembled, incomplete and couldn’t have been brandished as a weapon or fired in their current state.Back in November, the Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld the man’s conviction, determining a group of gun parts can still be a firearm under state law as long as the parts can be assembled into a gun — particularly in this case, where a firearm violation by a person convicted of violence isn’t able to even possess a firearm, let alone use one.In a 4-3 decision, the Minnesota Supreme Court agreed with the court of Appeals.

Court documents note that investigators recognized the gun parts found in the backpack were from a 20-gauge shotgun and — using a bolt and washer from a similar gun — were able to assemble it and found it functional through a test fire.

The Supreme Court justices determined that a firearm is “ordinarily understood to be an instrument designed for attack or defense” and shoots a projectile through explosive force. That means it couldn’t be applied to a flare gun, for example, because it’s designed as an emergency alert instrument. However, since the shotgun parts met that definition.

 

Additionally, the justices wrote that even though the parts were missing two pieces to be fully assembled into a functional shotgun, the missing parts didn’t change the design of the firearm or make it something that wasn’t designed for attack or defense.

“I have friends and family flying in from all over the country and @LoganDobson and I are having a joint birthday party at my house in D.C. on Friday including

(but not limited to) margarita machines, mariachi band, face painters, fog machine, mezcal bar, etc. @DaveCatanese is also expected to DJ for a portion of the evening.”

 

How did you get your start in politics?

“In 2007 for Christmas I asked my parents for a flight to New Hampshire to go and campaign forJohn McCain.

I showed up unannounced at the McCain New Hampshire HQ and luckily someone let me sleep on their floor and I spent a week waving McCain signs in the snow.

From then on I was hooked and ended up taking a semester off from Auburn University to work on the McCain campaign and I’ve been in politics ever since.”

“With the election less than a month away, I’m currently not reading anything other than Excel documents and direct mail copy.”
