President Trump [Carvel]: General Milley, what he did is really treasonous. If you look at what he said to China, he's either stupid, or it's treason. What he said to China should never be allowed. And thus would such a 3-star call up theater commanders to warn them to resist Milley’s reckless orders and to report to him first, followed by his phone call to the top Chinese PLA general to assure them that if Milley somehow gave an order deemed by the 3-star to be dangerously provocative, then he would not only not obey it but rather first warn the Chinese military of Milley’s unstable state of mind.

Labor Department finds employers endangered children, bounced paychecks, stole tips

SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has ordered the owners and operators of 14 Bay Area Subway restaurants to pay employees nearly $1 million in back wages and damages after federal investigators found they directed children as young as 14 and 15 to use dangerous equipment and assigned minors to work hours not permitted by law; failed to pay employees their wages regularly, including by issuing them hundreds of bad checks; and illegally kept tips left by customers.

In a rare action, the court’s order requires the owners to sell or shut down their businesses by Nov. 27, 2023, a term the department insisted on to resolve the case.

The action comes after the department’s Wage and Hour Division found these and other violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act by John Michael Meza and his wife, Jessica L. Meza, who had franchise agreements with franchisor and operator Doctor’s Associates LLC to operate the restaurants in Antioch, Clayton, Concord, Cotati, Napa, Petaluma, San Pablo, Santa Rosa, Vallejo and Windsor.

Investigators also found the employers interfered with the division’s review by coercing employees not to cooperate and threatening children who raised concerns or tried to exercise their legal rights. The department’s investigation also found that the Mezas’ associate, Hamza “Mike” Ayesh, played a role in these violations, including threatening an employee who complained about receiving a bounced payroll check.

The department obtained a preliminary court injunction on May 19, 2023, forbidding the employers from violating child labor laws, threatening and retaliating against workers and obstructing a federal investigation.

On Sept. 27, 2023, the department obtained a consent judgment and permanent injunction that orders the Mezas to pay 184 workers $475,000 in minimum wage, overtime and tips and an equal amount in liquidated damages. The court also ordered them to pay $150,000 in penalties. The Mezas and Ayesh will also have to pay $12,000 in punitive damages for their retaliatory conduct.

“Thanks to some very brave young people who stood up to their employers’ exploitation and attempts to intimidate them, the Department of Labor and a federal court are holding these business owners accountable,” said Wage and Hour Regional Administrator Ruben Rosalez in San Francisco. “With the combined efforts of Wage and Hour Division investigators and the department’s Office of the Solicitor, these employers are facing the consequences for endangering the safety and well-being of children and violating federal law.”

In June 2023, Doctor’s Associates notified the Mezas that it knew of the department’s litigation and that the Mezas continued to violate federal law. Regardless, Doctor’s Associates allowed the Mezas to continue operating their Subway franchises.

“The contempt employers showed for their workers’ safety, dignity and rights cost them the businesses they hoped to build and brought significant financial consequences,” said Regional Solicitor of Labor Marc Pilotin in San Francisco. “This case sends a clear message to others who — despite ongoing litigation and a preliminary injunction — continue their wage theft that the department will use the tools at its disposal to end their illegal practices.”

Five people arrested on over 40 felony child sex abuse charges

 

The first arrest came when SOCET got a tip saying a suspect was leaving his Medford home. Steven Wesley Rambo, 60, of Medford was arrested on nine felony counts of first-degree encouraging child sexual abuse.

 

David Michael Painter, 62 of Central Point. Painter was arrested at his home and is charged with 10 felony counts of encouraging child sexual abuse.

 

The third suspect, David Anthony Price, 40 of Grants Pass, was arrested at his home for 10 felony counts of encouraging child sexual abuse and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

 

Michael David Robertson, 45 of Medford, was arrested for three felony counts of encouraging child sex abuse and 16 counts of invasion of personal privacy.

 

Mark Joseph Harding, 37 of Central Point, turned himself in at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Harding was charged with 10 felony counts of encouraging child sexual abuse.

Trump ally pleads guilty in election interference case

 

Scott Hall has become the first co-defendant to make a plea bargain in the Georgia case

 

Georgia bail bondsman Scott Hall, a former Republican poll watcher and Donald Trump supporter, has pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor charges for his role in an alleged conspiracy to help overturn the then-president’s 2020 election defeat in the state.

 

Scott entered his plea on Friday in Atlanta’s Fulton County District Court under a deal with prosecutors that will spare him the prison time he could have faced under the felony charges that had been filed against him. He became the first Trump backer among the ex-president’s 18 Georgia co-defendants to agree to a plea bargain, and his testimony could help the district attorney’s office win convictions against his alleged co-conspirators.

 

During Friday’s plea hearing, a prosecutor asked Hall whether he understood that the terms of his probation agreement required him to “testify truthfully at any further court proceedings, to include trials of any co-defendants that is listed on the original indictment in which you were charged.” He replied, “Yes, ma’am.”

 

The plea agreement calls for Hall to serve five years of probation, pay a $5,000 fine, perform 200 hours of community service, and issue an apology to the state for trying to interfere in the November 2020 election. Prosecutors are expected to use his testimony against other Trump co-defendants, such as Trump lawyer Sidney Powell, and potentially against the former president.

 

Hall was allegedly involved in a scheme to gain unauthorized access to voting machines in Coffee County, Georgia. The original charges against him included conspiracy to commit election fraud, conspiracy to defraud the state, and conspiracy to commit computer theft. He pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to interfere with the performance of an election.

 

Late last month, Trump pleaded not guilty to the Georgia conspiracy charges against him. He has argued that the indictment is part of an effort by supporters of President Joe Biden to block him from winning the 2024 presidential election. He’s currently polling as the frontrunner for the Republican Party’s 2024 nomination.

 

Attorneys for Trump submitted a legal filing on Thursday indicating that he won’t seek to have his Georgia case moved to a federal court.

Police officers set up a large crime scene around a Lexington home Friday night.

 

Several cruisers could be seen parked outside of a home on Keeler Farm Way surrounded by crime scene tape shortly before 7:00 p.m.

 

One neighbor expressed to Boston 25 that the neighborhood is usually peaceful and quiet and the crime scene is out of the ordinary.

 

Investigators have not yet revealed details of what occurred at the home.

Trump’s Georgia case lists 30 unindicted co-conspirators: What we know

The Georgia indictment against former President Trump lists 30 unindicted co-conspirators, who are alleged to have aided in various efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

 

The individuals were not named or charged, but the list appears to include the remaining fake electors and others who communicated with Trump’s attorneys in the wake of the election.

 

Based on media reports, court documents and the House Jan. 6 committee’s investigation, the descriptions make some of their identities clear.

 

Here’s what we know about the 30 unindicted co-conspirators.

 

Individual 1: Drafted Trump election speech

 

The first unindicted co-conspirator is mentioned only once but played a role in the first action alleged in the indictment.

 

On Oct. 31, 2020, the individual allegedly discussed with Trump a draft speech that falsely declared victory and claimed voter fraud.

 

Prosecutors listed Trump’s Nov. 4, post-Election Day speech as the first of 161 alleged actions that contributed to the months-long racketeering effort.

 

The House Jan. 6 committee uncovered evidence indicating Tom Fitton, the president of conservative legal group Judicial Watch, had sent a draft Oct. 31 and later discussed it with Trump.

 

Fitton did not return a request for comment through a spokesperson.

 

Individual 2: Fake elector

 

The identity of the second individual remains unclear.

 

Charging documents indicate they were one of the 16 pro-Trump individuals who signed documents purporting to be one of Georgia’s valid electors.

 

Unlike many of the others, however, the individual was involved in the post-election efforts much earlier.

 

Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani left a voicemail for the individual Nov. 15, 2020, according to the indictment. The individual also allegedly received emails about the electors plan in early December.

 

Individual 3: Boris Epshteyn

 

The third individual appears to be Epshteyn, a longtime Trump aide.

 

The indictment first names the individual as appearing at a Nov. 19, 2020, press conference at the Republican National Committee headquarters, at which pro-Trump speakers promoted false claims of fraud.

 

It lists the individual as appearing alongside Giuliani, Jenna Ellis and Sidney Powell. Giuliani at the press conference had introduced Ephsteyn and two other lawyers to the crowd.

 

Two emails described in the indictment make Epshteyn stand out among the three, however.

 

Descriptions of the emails, sent by now-indicted Trump attorneys Kenneth Chesebro and John Eastman, match ones Ephsteyn received that were previously revealed by the House Jan. 6 committee.

 

Epshteyn did not return a request for comment.

 

Individual 4: Robert Sinners

 

The fourth individual appears to be Sinners, who worked as the Trump campaign’s director of Election Day operations in Georgia.

 

The indictment details Sinners’s alleged involvement with the plot to send the false slate of electors, noting various emails and texts he sent and received.

 

CNN reporting last year detailed a Nov. 20, 2020, email Sinners received that appears to match that one described in the indictment.

 

The indictment goes on to mention additional emails on Dec. 12, 2020. When testifying to the House Jan. 6 committee, Sinners described sending what appears to be one of those emails, and the committee published another email that seemingly matches one in the indictment.

 

Sinners’s broader testimony to the committee also closely tracks the allegations laid out in the indictment.

 

Sinners now works as communications director for Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R). Raffensperger’s office did not return a request for comment.

 

Individual 5: Bernard Kerik

 

Kerik’s attorney, Tim Parlatore, confirmed to The Hill that his client, the former New York City police commissioner who helped lead an investigation into false claims of voter fraud, is the fifth unindicted individual.

 

The indictment states the individual was present for a meeting between Arizona state legislative leaders and Trump attorneys, including Giuliani and Ellis.

House Passes Rep. Marjorie Greene's Amendment To Cut Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's Salary To $1

 

House Republicans have approved an amendment to slash U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s annual salary to no more than $1. The move comes as Congress remains in a gridlock over the budget, which could lead to a government shutdown.

 

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Wednesday introduced the measure, which was approved in a voice vote as part of the 2024 fiscal year appropriations bill for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). (pdf)

 

"I'm proud to let you know my amendment to FIRE Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin just passed on the House floor," Ms. Greene wrote on X following the amendment's passage.

 

“Under his failed leadership, our military is being destroyed, and he doesn’t deserve to serve any longer. This is the first time in the 118th Congress the Holman rule has been used to hold a Biden official accountable. It’s time for more," she continued.

 

The Holman Rule is a provision that allows members of Congress to reduce the salary, fire federal employees, or cut specific programs during the appropriations process. The provision was first adopted in 1876. It has been dropped and reinstated at various times since its inception. Earlier this year, the GOP-led House revived the measure for the 118th Congress. The order was not adopted for the 116th and 117th Congresses. (pdf)

 

"Secretary Austin has not fulfilled his job duties," Ms. Greene said on the House floor. "As a matter of fact, he's destroying our military. During Secretary Austin's tenure, military recruitment has reached crisis levels of low recruitment."

 

Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) spoke in opposition to the move, citing Mr. Austin's decades-long military career.

 

"Secretary Austin has dedicated his life to service in the United States," Ms. McCollum said in a speech on the House floor. "For 41 years, he has served in the United States Army, which began as an appointment to West Point and rose to the rank of four-star general."

 

Mr. Austin, who led the withdrawal from Afghanistan, has an annual salary of more than $221,000.

 

“None of the funds made available by this Act may be used to pay Defense Secretary Lloyd James Austin III a salary that exceeds $1,” the provision reads. (pdf)

 

Ms. Greene, along with other conservatives in the House, has frequently criticized Mr. Austin's chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. More than 180 people, including 13 service members, were killed by suicide bombers at Kabul Airport during the evacuation that marked the disastrous end of the 20-year war against terror.

Austin Faces Impeachment

 

The Pentagon chief is also facing impeachment for "high crimes and misdemeanors" regarding his actions leading up to and during the military's exodus from Afghanistan.

 

Late last month, Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) introduced articles of impeachment accusing Mr. Austin of "dereliction of duty including and resulting in abandonment of Americans in Afghanistan."

Retiring Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley is hitting the media circuit as he retires. How odd of him to warn about all the unconstitutional measures that Donald Trump threatened to enact that supposedly justified the illegal or unethical acts that his opponents in the military and intelligence community actually did.

'No Ukraine Funds': McCarthy Throws 11th Hour Hail Mary To Avert Shutdown

 

In an 11th hour Hail Mary in the hopes of averting a government shutdown, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced that the only way the House will pass a Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government through October is to drop Ukraine funding.

 

"I think if we had a clean one without Ukraine on it, we could probably be able to move that through," McCarthy told CNN's Manu Raju.

 

The comment comes hours after McCarthy lost a game of chicken with the House Freedom Caucus, failing to pass a CR which left McCarthy will few options to try and avert a shutdown in less than 36 hours. McCarthy was hoping that the House bill's border security provisions would win over enough holdouts to pass.

 

Meanwhile, the White House slammed the failed bill over the 'elimination of 12,000 FBI agents,' and 'almost 1,000 ATF agents.'

 

Of note, House Republicans on Thursday narrowly passed the annual defense spending bill, but only after they removed $300 million in Ukraine aid from the legislation (which then cleared in a separate vote because a bunch of Democrats then voted).

 

Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who failed twice last week to advance the bill to the floor, finally locked down enough Republican votes to pass the bill after the House stripped $300 million to arm Ukraine from the text.

 

The separate bill carved out to allocate those funds for Kyiv passed Thursday in a 311-117 blowout bipartisan vote. Republicans had won a close procedural vote earlier in the day to separate the Ukraine money from the Pentagon bill, a move meant to flip a handful of GOP holdouts. -Politico

 

Democrats framed the optics as Kremlin-friendly, with House Armed Services ranking Democrat Adam Smith saying "The Russians are good at propaganda… It will be played as America backing off of its commitment for Ukraine."

 

Republicans responded that by carving Ukraine out of the defense bill, it allows opponents of either measure (Ukraine aid or the defense bill) to voice their opinions on each independently.

 

"Why don’t we make sure this gets through? I mean, I’m just mystified that this is somehow a problem," said House Rules Chair Tom Cole (R-OK), according to Politico. "We guarantee you something you want is going to pass the House and you’re upset about it."

 

And now, McCarthy says there's no way to avert a government shutdown unless the House, and the Senate, agree to nix Ukraine aid from the 30-day stopgap.

Innovative technologies can foster a greener future by transforming finance. A case in point is the work being done by the BIS Innovation Hub Centre in Hong Kong. Bénédicte Nolens, head of the center, explains how Project Genesis 1.0 and 2.0 aim at making it more attractive to issue and invest in green bonds.

In many countries, issuing and investing in bonds can be cumbersome and complex, involving many steps and parties, and typically requiring a considerable financial commitment from the investor. For those investing in environmentally friendly projects, there is uncertainty about whether the bond issuer is delivering the positive green impact it committed to at issuance. Also, there are typically no liquid and transparent secondary markets for retail investors.

The BIS Innovation Hub and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) successfully developed two prototype digital platforms that bring to life the vision that an investor can download an app and invest any amount into safe government bonds, which will develop a green project. Over the bond's lifetime, the investor can not only see accrued interest, but also track in real time how much clean energy is being generated, and the consequent reduction in CO2 emissions linked to the investment. Further, the investor can sell the bonds in a transparent market.

Overview of Project Genesis

The Innovation Hub and HKMA completed two prototypes in conjunction with private sector consortiums:

The first prototype simulates the life cycle of a typical bond on a permissioned distributed ledger platform, including origination, subscription, settlement and secondary trading. The prototype was able to considerably streamline these processes.

Police identify suspect accused in Arlington Vandergriff Honda shooting

Arlington police have identified the suspect accused of opening fire Thursday night at Vandergriff Honda in Arlington. Abbas Al-Mutairy, 25, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said Friday morning. More charges are possible, pending results of the criminal investigation. Al-Mutairy is listed in critical condition at a hospital, according to officials. Al-Mutairy was shot by officers and taken into custody after he allegedly opened fire at the Vandergriff Honda dealership, 1104 W. Interstate 20, where he used to work before he was terminated, police said. Panicked customers and employees scrambled to take cover. No one besides the suspect was injured in the shooting. Arlington police responded to the Honda dealership, along the frontage road between Cooper Street and Matlock Road, about 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports of an armed man in the parking lot firing shots at the building. They immediately spotted the gunman and multiple officers fired at him, police said. The suspect was firing his gun when officers arrived, according to police spokesperson Sgt. Courtney White, but she didn’t know whether he shot at the officers. It’s unknown whether he was targeting a specific person or people, the police spokesperson said. One witness, Samuel Hartman, told the Star-Telegram that he arrived at the dealership in the afternoon to get his car serviced and ended up hiding under a truck in the garage as shots rang out. Hartman said he had been walking outside while waiting for his car. When when he opened the door to go back to the service area, he heard loud sounds and people “were freaking out” and yelling, “Get to safety!” He said he called 911 while taking cover with two women under the truck. It sounded like the shooter was nearby. An employee told KXAS-TV that the gunman was armed with a semi-automatic rifle. Sgt. White said callers described the weapon as a shotgun but she could not confirm what type of gun it was. A manager who had a handgun told the man to leave and they began shooting at each other before officers arrived, the employee told the NBC station.

Hartman said he saw several officers arrive and said it sounded like police exchanged fire with the gunman. Soon afterward, police told everyone to run to where other customers and employees were gathered, Hartman said. “One of the employees picked me up because it was kind of oily and it was tough for me to get myself up, and he gave me a piggyback ride,” he said. Hartman said he “finally saw the guy that was apprehended,” who he described as “bloodied up.” Witnesses were told to stay at the scene as the investigation continued and were still waiting at the dealership after 9 p.m., Hartman said. Another customer who was test driving a car told Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV that she saw the gunman and heard dozens of shots. The witness told WFAA that she and her husband ran down the street to take cover and hid along with employees from the dealership.

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — A man wanted in connection with a homicide in Central Texas was arrested after attempting to fake his way through the border into El Paso on Tuesday.

 

Jesus Javier Rios, 47, arrived in the U.S. from Mexico at the Paso Del Norte Bridge in Downtown El Paso.

 

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said although he presented a Texas-issued identification card, officers believed he was an “imposter” making a false claim of U.S. citizenship and conducted a secondary screening.

 

Border officers scanned his fingerprints and determined that Rios was not the man on the ID card but rather a man wanted for homicide in Tarrant County, Texas.
