The US Embassy in Moscow has warned that “extremists” are plotting to carry out attacks in the Russian capital within the next few days.

The embargo, poised to be enforced this month, targets not just VPN ads but also websites offering advice on how to navigate around the country’s censorship barriers.

 

This clampdown appears to signify one of the most recent moves in a long-term strategy aimed at curbing access to information from outside Russia, effectively insulating its internet users while simultaneously beefing up the government’s surveillance prowess. Consequently, VPNs, which could be perceived as one of the last resort tools available to Russians for tapping into international viewpoints, are being denied to the users.

 

VPNs, shorthand for Virtual Private Networks, essentially establish a secure digital conduit that endows internet users with privacy protections. They make this feasible by encrypting the internet connection, thus obstructing external viewers from prying into individuals’ online activities. Beyond dodging government-imposed censorship, VPNs are vital tools used by modern internet users for securing their sensitive data, accessing geographically limited content, and promoting private browsing devoid of tracking.

ROME — Italian courts have vindicated a scheme, sponsored by key allies of former U.S. President Donald Trump, to set up a “gladiator school” for right-wing wannabe politicians in an ancient monastery in the mountains of central Italy.

 

Benjamin Harnwell, a former British Conservative European Parliament staffer, rented out the 700-year-old Trisulti charterhouse east of Rome in 2017 with a view to establishing an “Academy for the Judeo-Christian West” with his longtime friend Steve Bannon, the hard-right activist and podcaster who played a key role in Trump’s election victory in 2016.

 

Shortly after moving in, Harnwell was sued by Italy’s top state prosecutor, which alleged that he had fraudulently obtained the lease for the monastery and failed to pay €200,000 in rent.

 

After five years of grueling lawsuits through civil and criminal courts, Harnwell was exonerated Thursday after a magistrate in a northern Roman courthouse ruled that he had obtained the lease correctly and had paid all funds due, corroborating the verdict of previous rulings in the civil court. The state’s prosecutor, which had automatically picked up the case following allegations made in an investigative TV documentary, also dropped two of its charges.

The ruling Thursday potentially lays the groundwork for Harnwell reclaiming the monastery after he was pre-emptively evicted in 2021 amid demonstrations from activists from a nearby town against the occupation of a cherished heritage site by individuals linked to the far right.

 

The proposed academy’s curriculum — a cocktail of libertarianism and conservative Catholicism — had planned to include courses on “Cultural Marxism,” “The Church as an Early Business Enterprise” and Islam, and aimed to provide the world’s future populist politicians and influencers with the rhetorical skills needed to challenge liberal worldviews.

 

Funded by Bannon and a coterie of unnamed associates in right-wing circles, Harnwell had been the sole applicant to lease the monastery when the government was seeking new buyers in 2016 after the friars who had occupied it for seven centuries began to dwindle and could no longer manage the upkeep.

 

The verdict was originally due in December but the state’s prosecutor had turned up without having studied the brief and asked for it to be postponed to March.

 

Meanwhile, the state’s star witness — a lawyer who had publicly denounced Harnwell in an investigative documentary — was absent from each hearing in Rome’s criminal court. That left only two local police officers, one of whom offered testimony that was limited to details gleaned from local media at the time as well as conversations with the mayor of the small town bordering the monastery.

 

“Anybody who had followed this case from the beginning and had followed it closely knows that no crime had been committed,” said Harnwell. “How [Former Culture Minister Dario Franceschini] got me out of that monastery without me ever having been convicted of any crime is a question that will have to be asked.”

NSW have arrested and charged a 44-year-old Sydney man, David Wise, for planting a bomb on the car of an Australian flying a Palestinian flag on his ute.

 

It has taken police 8 weeks to make the arrest. The matter was not handed to terror police but rather a local constable was given charge of the investigation. Wise, who lives near the victim Theo (his name withheld for safety reasons), has been refused bail and appeared via video link at the Downing Centre Local Court today.

 

He is charged with the following offences:

 

– Send article to cause alarm;

 

– Stalk/intimidate intend to fear physical harm (two counts)

 

– Use carriage service to menace/harass/offend; and

 

– Enter enclosed land.

 

The bomb was derided in mainstream media at the time, and the incident downplayed, as a “fake bomb”. The ABC is headlining its coverage of the incident today with “fake bomb” despite the story admitting the Jerry can contained petrol.

 

It carried a note saying: “Enough! Take down flag! One chance!!!!”

 

It took the bomb disposal squad three hours and a robot to secure the device on January 5. Theo has expressed dismay with the length and lack of prompt response to the threat, telling MWM his family has lived in fear, and has been subject to further threats since the initial threat.

 

He told MWM today: “When Muslims demand peace and freedom, they are publicly branded as terrorists, and when people like me show solidarity to those being murdered at unprecedented rates, we are called antisemites and criticised for being ‘divisive’.

On 16 February 2024, the resident received an alleged threatening phone call. He alerted police and an investigation commenced.

 

Following extensive inquiries, police executed a search warrant at a home in Botany this morning (Thursday, 7 March 2024).

A United Airlines Boeing 777 plane was forced to make an emergency landing after it lost a tire during takeoff on Thursday afternoon.

The United plane was taking off from San Francisco when one of the six tires detached from the aircraft and damaged several cars in the parking lot. The flight was diverted to LAX where it safely landed.

The FAA is investigating the latest failure.

CBS News reported:

 

A United Airlines Boeing 777 plane has landed safely at LAX after losing a tire shortly after takeoff from San Francisco International Airport around 1:20 p.m. on Thursday.

United flight 35 was headed to Osaka, Japan with a total of 249 people on board.

SkyCAL was live over LAX when the plane touched down with no apparent issues. It taxied to a gate where passengers were let out. United said that a new plane will be dispatched to take passengers to their final destination.

In a statement, United Airlines said that the 777-200 has six tires on each of its two main landing gear struts and is designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the wheel failure will be investigated by the FAA.

Millions of research papers at risk of disappearing from the Internet

 

An analysis of DOIs suggests that digital preservation is not keeping up with burgeoning scholarly knowledge.

 

More than one-quarter of scholarly articles are not being properly archived and preserved, a study of more than seven million digital publications suggests. The findings, published in the Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication on 24 January1, indicate that systems to preserve papers online have failed to keep pace with the growth of research output.

“Our entire epistemology of science and research relies on the chain of footnotes,” explains author Martin Eve, a researcher in literature, technology and publishing at Birkbeck, University of London. “If you can’t verify what someone else has said at some other point, you’re just trusting to blind faith for artefacts that you can no longer read yourself.”

Eve, who is also involved in research and development at digital-infrastructure organization Crossref, checked whether 7,438,037 works labelled with digital object identifiers (DOIs) are held in archives. DOIs — which consist of a string of numbers, letters and symbols — are unique fingerprints used to identify and link to specific publications, such as scholarly articles and official reports. Crossref is the largest DOI registration agency, allocating the identifiers to about 20,000 members, including publishers, museums and other institutions.

The sample of DOIs included in the study was made up of a random selection of up to 1,000 registered to each member organization. Twenty-eight percent of these works — more than two million articles — did not appear in a major digital archive, despite having an active DOI. Only 58% of the DOIs referenced works that had been stored in at least one archive. The other 14% were excluded from the study because they were published too recently, were not journal articles or did not have an identifiable source.

Preservation challenge

Eve notes that the study has limitations: namely that it tracked only articles with DOIs, and that it did not search every digital repository for articles (he did not check whether items with a DOI were stored in institutional repositories, for example).

Nevertheless, preservation specialists have welcomed the analysis. “It’s been hard to know the real extent of the digital preservation challenge faced by e-journals,” says William Kilbride, managing director of the Digital Preservation Coalition, headquartered in York, UK. The coalition publishes a handbook detailing good preservation practice.

“Many people have the blind assumption that if you have a DOI, it’s there forever,” says Mikael Laakso, who studies scholarly publishing at the Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki. “But that doesn’t mean that the link will always work.” In 2021, Laakso and his colleagues reported2 that more than 170 open-access journals had disappeared from the Internet between 2000 and 2019.

Kate Wittenberg, managing director of the digital archiving service Portico in New York City, warns that small publishers are at higher risk of failing to preserve articles than are large ones. “It costs money to preserve content,” she says, adding that archiving involves infrastructure, technology and expertise that many smaller organizations do not have access to.

Eve’s study suggests some measures that could improve digital preservation, including stronger requirements at DOI registration agencies and better education and awareness of the issue among publishers and researchers.

“Everybody thinks of the immediate gains they might get from having a paper out somewhere, but we really should be thinking about the long-term sustainability of the research ecosystem,” Eve says. “After you’ve been dead for 100 years, are people going to be able to get access to the things you’ve worked on?”

Based on witness interviews conducted by investigators, a group of migrants was walking on the paved road in the early morning hours when they were approached by four individuals, at least one of whom was armed with a handgun.

According to the witnesses, the armed individual demanded money from the group, racked his pistol to chamber a round, and pointed the weapon at one of the migrants. Then the migrants heard a single gunshot and observed the armed individual fall to the ground. The migrants informed investigators they did not know from where the gunshot was fired.

The BORTAC agents involved in the incident reported a similar description of events. They observed the armed individual threaten the migrants, chamber a round, and point a gun at one of the migrants – at which time the BORTAC precision marksman fired one round, striking the armed individual. No other injuries were reported.

Panamanian archaeologists recently uncovered a 1,200-year-old tomb filled with golden treasures and victims of human sacrifice.

 

The Ministry of Culture of Panama (MiCultura) published a Spanish-language press release about the discovery on Mar. 1.

 

The tomb, which was found in the Coclé Province of Panama, was built and dedicated to a lord between the years 750 and 800 AD.

 

Researchers found the grave at El Caño Archaeological Park.

 

The tomb was filled with various gold items, including a set of circular gold plates and two belts made of spherical gold beads.

 

Gold-covered earrings made from sperm whale teeth were found, along with crocodile-shaped earrings.

 

Earrings in the shape of a human man and woman were also discovered, along with four bracelets, two bells, and bone flutes.

 

Archaeologists also dug up skirts and bracelets made with canine teeth.

 

Experts believe that the tomb was dedicated to a chief who died in his 30s.

 

The leader of the archaeological project, Dr. Julia Mayo, said that the tomb was also filled with the bodies of other people that “accompan[ied] him to the ‘beyond,’” according to the press release.

 

In ancient Panamanian society, high-status people could be buried with eight to 32 people.

 

It was believed that the “companions” would help the decedent transition to the afterlife.

 

“[She] explained that the excavation of the burial has not been completed, therefore, it cannot be determined at the moment how many people were buried with him,” the press release added.

 

Archaeologists also found that the chief was buried face-down.

 

MiCultura says that the discovery is important because it “presents a very special type of burial,” that includes “multiple and simultaneous burials.”

Cranes made by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC), a state-owned Chinese company, in some cases carry cellular modems, according to a congressional investigation reported by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

 

The modems offer a potential backdoor for remote access, and do not appear to support the normal operations of the equipment, the investigation found.

 

The discovery of the modems, which had not been previously disclosed, supports growing fears in US intelligence circles that Chinese cranes could be used to covertly monitor US ports, or even sabotage their operations.

 

Chinese firms make nearly 80 percent of the cranes used in US ports, after years of undercutting domestic suppliers on price.House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green, a Tennessee Republican, told the Journal that the Chinese government 'is looking for every opportunity to collect valuable intelligence and position themselves to exploit vulnerabilities by systematically burrowing into America's critical infrastructure.

 

'The United States has clearly overlooked this threat for far too long,' he added.

 

A spokesman for China's embassy in DC said any fears over Chinese cranes are 'entirely paranoia' and amount to 'abusing national power to obstruct normal economic and trade cooperation.'

 

Last month, President Joe Biden's administration announced a $20 billion investment to build more ship-to-shore cranes in America over spying concerns.

 

Biden's executive order give the US Coast Guard new powers to issue basic cybersecurity requirements for transportation vessels and ports amid fears Chinese hackers will target American infrastructure during a potential invasion of Taiwan.

 

One particular area of focus is ship-to-shore cranes, which move cargo containers off of vessels.

 

'We felt there was real strategic risk here,' said Anne Neuberger, US deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology.

 

'These cranes, because they are essentially moving the large-scale containers in and out of port, if they were encrypted in a criminal attack, or rented or operated by an adversary, that could have real impact on our economy's movement of goods and our military's movement of goods through ports.'

 

Of the 200 Chinese-made cranes at US ports, Coast Guard cyber experts have done security assessments and hunted for malicious cyber activity on 92, or less than half, of them.

 

Biden is investing heavily in having American-built cranes be constructed over the next five years, taking money from the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill to fund them.

 

The cranes will be built by a US subsidiary of Mitsui, a Japanese company, to produce the cranes, which officials said would be the first time in 30 years they would be built domestically.
