Pennsylvania Supreme Court Makes Huge Ruling Regarding Mail-In Ballots

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court reversed a lower court ruling last week, determining that mail-in ballots with incorrect dates or no dates on the exterior of the envelope cannot be counted. This decision is a significant win for advocates of election integrity.

In a 4-3 ruling, the state’s highest court stated that the lower court, which had deemed the mandate unenforceable, should not have heard the case since it did not involve election boards from all 67 counties, according to The Associated Press. In Pennsylvania, counties are responsible for administering elections, but the left-leaning groups that filed the case only sued two counties—Philadelphia and Allegheny.

Two weeks prior, the Commonwealth Court had paused the enforcement of handwritten dates on exterior envelopes. The Supreme Court’s reversal of this decision now raises the possibility that thousands of ballots arriving on time could be discarded in a crucial swing state, potentially affecting the outcome of a closely contested presidential race. Notably, more Democrats tend to vote by mail in this battleground state than Republicans.

Republican groups that appealed the decision hailed it as a significant victory for honesty in elections and a major boost for former President Donald Trump, who narrowly lost Pennsylvania to Joe Biden in 2020.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley, in a release, called it a major victory for election integrity “that will protect commonsense mail ballot safeguards and help voters cast their ballots with confidence.”

The state high court’s ruling came just ahead of Pennsylvania’s voter registration deadline of Oct. 21, which is Monday. State election officials note that if residents want to vote in this year’s elections, they have to be registered by then.

Attorneys representing the ten left-wing ‘community’ organizations that filed the lawsuit stated that the decision left the door open for further litigation on the issue.

“Thousands of voters are at risk of having their ballots rejected in November for making a meaningless mistake,” said Mimi McKenzie, legal director of the Public Interest Law Center in Philadelphia. She urged voters to “carefully read and follow the instructions for submitting a mail-in ballot to reduce the number of ballots being rejected for trivial paperwork errors.”

Two Democratic appointees joined both Republican appointees on the state Supreme Court in the ruling.

The lawsuit, filed in May, challenged the enforceability of the mandate based on a state constitutional provision ensuring that all elections are “free and equal,” the AP reported.

Recent elections in Pennsylvania suggest that more than 10,000 ballots in this year’s general election could be discarded due to incorrect or missing envelope dates—potentially influencing the outcome of the presidential race. With Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral votes making it the largest prize among the seven swing states, this issue carries significant weight, the outlet added.

Historically, Pennsylvania has rejected ballots for missing dates or for dates that are clearly incorrect, such as those in the future or before mail-in ballots were printed. While state law mandates dates on envelopes, election officials do not use them to determine the timeliness of ballots. Instead, mail-in ballots are logged and time-stamped upon receipt and must arrive at county election offices before the polls close on Election Day said the AP.

Last month, in a broad new executive order that former President Donald Trump praised, GOP Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin mandated that all ballots for the 2024 presidential election must be on paper. But the Biden-Harris Justice Department promptly sued, claiming federal law prevents him from making the change so close to an election.

Overseas Voters' Advocates Protest GOP Absentee Ballot Lawsuits

Americans living overseas, including active-duty members of the military and their families, say they're concerned about their voting rights after Republicans have filed lawsuits in three swing states in hopes of accepting and counting absentee ballots coming in from overseas.

"We are already hearing military voters from all states who feel discouraged from participating if they have concern that their ballot won't even be counted," Sarah Streyder, the executive director of the nonpartisan Secure Families Initiative, told reporters Friday, according to ABC News Saturday.

Streyder is in England, where her husband, a Space Force member, is stationed. She said that no matter how the lawsuits turn out, the damage is already done.

The lawsuits have been filed in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and North Carolina, where the Republican plaintiffs claim that there are loopholes in state laws that could allow people who are not eligible to cast absentee ballots overseas.

In Pennsylvania, the lawsuit was filed on Sept. 30 by GOP Reps. Guy Reschenthaler, Dan Meuser, Glenn Thompson, Lloyd Smucker, and Mike Kelly, all of whom are seeking reelection.

It accuses Al Schmidt, the secretary of the Commonwealth, and Deputy Secretary for Elections Jonathan Marks of telling local election offices not to allow ID requirements for foreign absentee voters.

They claim that the state's process would allow ineligible voters to register to vote without verification of identity, while still receiving a ballot by email.

The Pennsylvania Secretary of State's office said the lawsuit is "nothing more than an attempt to confuse and frighten people ahead of an important election," and that the state law ensures all overseas ballots sent out are to eligible people.

"Ballots cast by ineligible voters occur at extremely low rates and are routinely investigated and prosecuted by the appropriate authorities when they occur," the office said. "Individuals registering to vote must affirm that the information they submit is accurate, with any false statement subjecting them to a potential felony conviction, prison sentence, and substantial fine."

The Republican National Committee, meanwhile, filed lawsuits in North Carolina and Michigan last week, saying their rules violate federal laws and allow ex-pats to vote even if they never lived in those states.

They also allege that the states' election officials haven't created a secure verification system, calling out provisions that permit spouses or dependents of military or overseas voters to cast ballots based on the residency of the military member or voter.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed briefs to dismiss the case, saying the RNC has no standing in its claims.

"Their actions are a clear attempt to sow doubt about the integrity of the election and suppress the legitimate votes of American citizens," Nessel said, adding that the absentee ballots have already been mailed out and that the RNC didn't file papers about its intention to sue, a violation of Michigan law.

Patrick Gannon, a spokesman for the North Carolina State Board of Elections, also said the suit is without merit and that state law that allows military family members to vote in North Carolina's elections was adopted 13 years ago.

There was no information in Pennsylvania about how many ballots have been requested for the general election. In Michigan, more than 22,000 overseas ballots have been requested, according to the Secretary of State's office. So far, almost 8,000 have been submitted.

In North Carolina, 8,451 absentee ballots have been requested by military members, and 20,571 ballots have been requested by civilians living overseas, said the State Board of Elections.

Shenzhen DJI Innovation Technology Co., Ltd., commonly known as DJI, the Chinese drone manufacturer, has launched a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Defense, challenging its designation as a “Chinese military company.”

Dark Matter in a Simulated Universe

Is our universe haunted? It might look that way on this dark matter map. The gravity of unseen dark matter is the leading explanation for why galaxies rotate so fast, why galaxies orbit clusters so fast, why gravitational lenses so strongly deflect light, and why visible matter is distributed as it is both in the local universe and on the cosmic microwave background. With the presidential election in less than three weeks, you may be wondering about the impact the result will have on stocks.

To some extent, the election outcome doesn’t matter. The S&P 500 has risen in 39 of the past 50 years, generating an average annual return of 11.9%, including dividends.

So, if history repeats itself, stocks should do well for whoever wins the presidency. To be sure, the market has done better with Democratic presidents than Republican ones.

According to Ned Davis Research, from 1901 to 2024, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed an annualized 8.2% under Democratic presidents and 3.2% under Republican administrations.

Perhaps that means Democratic presidents have implemented superior economic policy compared to Republicans.But it seems likely to me that much of the difference is random.

What Congress means for stocks

The makeup of Congress shows the opposite result. With a Democratic-controlled Congress, the DJIA has gained an annualized 1.1% when adjusted for inflation.However, with a Republican Congress, the increase is 6.5%.

Again, I think the results are more random than a reflection of the superior economic policy passed by GOP-led Congresses.

Looking at the current market environment, some experts say a Trump victory has already been priced into the strong stock market.They think he would implement business-friendly policies that are good for stocks.

The betting odds of Trump becoming president have risen to 56%,according to data from several sources cited by JPMorgan Chase.

Meanwhile, the odds of a GOP majority in the Senate have risen above 80%, and the odds of a Democratic House have slid from over 60% to around 55%.

JPMorgan’s take on the election, stocks

“The rising probability of a Republican sweep is seen in the market moves over the past two weeks,”Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, managing director for global market strategy at JPMorgan, wrote in a commentary.

Those moves include stronger stocks, particularly bank stocks, a stronger dollar, and higher U.S. bond yields.

But market levels don’t imply as high a probability of a Republican presidency/Congress sweep as the 45% probability implied by betting markets, he said.

Renowned investor Stanley Druckenmiller, an ex-colleague of hedge fund legend George Soros, also thinks the stock market has accounted for a Trump victory.

Cuba's efforts to restore power to the island were derailed for a third time late on Saturday, Cuban authorities said shortly before midnight, leaving millions in the dark and raising fresh questions over the viability of the government's bid to reestablish electrical service.

Cuba's national electrical grid first crashed around midday on Friday after the island's largest power plant shut down. The grid collapsed again on Saturday morning, state-run media reported.

By early evening, authorities reported some progress restoring power before announcing the grid had once again collapsed.

"Tonight at 10:25 p.m. the total disconnection of the national electro-energetic system occurred again," the Havana Electric company said on Telegram late on Saturday.

The post was later removed from the company's Telegram feed. It was not immediately clear why the post was removed, but millions were still without power on early on Sunday.

Cuba's energy ministry said shortly after the Havana Electric post that it was working to reestablish service, adding that "another disconnection" had occurred in the "western sub-system," which includes the capital Havana.

"The process of reestablishing the electrical system continues to be complex," the ministry said on X.

A third grid collapse marks a major setback in the government's efforts to quickly restore power to exhausted residents already suffering from severe food, medicine and fuel shortages.

Reuters reporters witnessed two small protests overnight, one in Marianao and the other in the Cuatro Caminos area of Havana. Various videos of protests elsewhere in the capital began to crop up on social media late on Saturday, though Reuters was not able to verify their authenticity.

Internet traffic dropped off sharply in Cuba on Saturday, according to data from internet monitoring group NetBlocks, as vast power outages made it all but impossible for most island residents to charge phones and get online.

"Network data show that Cuba remains largely offline as the island experiences a second nationwide power outage," Netblocks said on Saturday.

Even before the grid failures, a dire electricity shortfall on Friday had forced Cuba's Communist-run government to send non-essential state workers home and cancel school for children as it sought to conserve fuel for power generation.

The government has blamed weeks of worsening blackouts - as long as 10 to 20 hours a day across much of the island - on deteriorating infrastructure, fuel shortages and rising demand.

Cuba also blames the U.S. trade embargo, as well as sanctions instituted by then-President Donald Trump, for ongoing difficulties in acquiring fuel and spare parts to operate and maintain its oil-fired plants.

The U.S. has denied any role in the grid failures.

He subsequently called her "bird brain" during this year's presidential primary season when the pair were both running for the party's nomination. The two camps eventually mended fences and in March, Haley ended her campaign for president and endorsed Trump in July at the Republican National Convention.

Sources close to the discussions said that while “details and dates” have not been finalized, the camps have been discussing a town hall event toward the end of October. Trump and Haley have not appeared together since July and polling data indicates Trump’s main weak point among the electorate is his lack of appeal to suburban women. An in-person campaign event with Haley on stage could bring over some female voters who are hesitant about throwing their support behind Trump.

“We’re seeing Republican candidates struggle with women, and that includes Donald Trump,” the Republican operative close to the campain told CNN. “Haley helps with that.”

Haley has said while she still is hurt by some of Trump’s words, the larger issue of the future of the nation takes priority. “I don’t agree with Trump 100 percent of the time,” Haley said in her Sirius XM radio show in September.

“I have not forgotten what he said about me. I’ve not forgotten what he said about my husband or his, you know, deployment time or his military service. I haven’t forgotten about his or his campaign’s tactics from, you know, putting a bird cage outside our hotel room to calling me ‘bird brain,’” Haley said on her show, adding that she’s still for Trump because she thinks he “will make the country better.”

The documents, which are marked top secret, were posted online to Telegram and first reported by CNN and Axios. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The investigation is also examining how the documents were obtained — including whether it was an intentional leak by a member of the U.S. intelligence community or obtained by another method, like a hack — and whether any other intelligence information was compromised, one of the officials said. The documents emerged as the U.S. has urged Israel to take advantage of its elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and press for a ceasefire in Gaza, and has likewise urgently cautioned Israel not to further expand military operations in the north in Lebanon and risk a wider regional war. However, Israel's leadership has repeatedly stressed it will not let Iran's missile attack go unanswered.

Large bets in election prediction market are from overseas, source saysOctober 19, 2024. By Michelle Conlin

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Four accounts on crypto-based prediction market Polymarketthat placed large bets on former President Donald Trumpwinning the 2024 election, and have been the subject of much online speculation,are owned by non-Americans or a non-American, according to a source familiar with the matter on Friday.

Opinion polls indicate a likely close match between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris in the vote on Nov. 5. However, the odds have diverged on Polymarket, withTrump pulling strongly ahead at a 60% chance of winning versus Harris on 40%.

The trade was driven by four accounts that placed more than $30 million worth of bets, according to the source, confirming an earlier story in the Wall Street Journal. Political pundits and social media users have questioned whether specific high-profile Americans could be behind the moves.

But Polymarket does not allow Americans to make U.S. election bets on the exchange, and the source confirmed that Polymarket's users are international. The source said the company certifies all of its large traders to ensure they are not logging in via VPNs to obscure which country they are in.

Reuters could not immediately determine if the four accounts represent a single trader or many.

Given the size and impact of the bets, Polymarket is investigating the activity in partnership with outside experts, the person said, confirming the Wall Street Journal's reporting.A $30 million bet on Trump on Polymarket would be equivalent to about 1% of trading volume on the platform related to the presidential race.

Americans have faced steep restrictions on betting on U.S. elections online. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has previously rejected applications to offer contracts or derivatives that allow Americans to bet on elections. CFTC Chairman Rostin Behnam said in a September 2023 statement that such event contracts would effectively turn the agency into an "election cop," a duty for which the CFTC lacked a mandate.

"It makes sense for the CFTC to have authority to combat fraud, manipulation, and false reporting in underlying commodity markets," Behnam said at the time. "But it is impractical for the CFTC to combat them in the underlying market here - a political contest."

Proponents argued the contracts could be a valuable new financial tool to provide insight on the future.

In November 2023, Kalshi, another betting exchange, sued the CFTC over its ban on U.S. election betting. A federal appeals court sided with Kalshi on Oct. 2, paving the way for Americans to start trading on political races just one month ahead of the election.

Kalshi has Trump at 57% and Harris at 43%.

In an emailed statement, Kalshi said: "Our stance on Trump's surge in odds is that it's all part of normal market activity.Trump is simply gaining popularity, and prediction markets aggregate information from a wider audience at a faster pace than polls."

Watch SpaceX's Starship come down for nighttime splashdown during epic test flight

SpaceX has given us another angle on the epic fifth test flight of its Starship megarocket.

The company made history on that Oct. 13 mission, catching Starship's Super Heavy first-stage booster with the "chopstick" arms of the launch tower about seven minutes after liftoff.

But Starship's 165-foot-tall (50 meters) upper stage — known as Starship, or just Ship — aced its return to Earth as well.

It came down for a pinpoint splashdown halfway around the world from its South Texas launch site, as a newly released video from SpaceX shows.

"Starship flip maneuver and landing burn on its fifth flight test.

Vehicle improvements ensured flaps were protected from high heating, resulting in a controlled entry and high-accuracy splashdown at the targeted area in the Indian Ocean," SpaceX wrote in a Friday (Oct. 18) post on X that shared the 21-second video.

That video was taken from the ocean's surface, from a buoy or other bobbing object, as SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk noted in a jokey reply to the company's post.

"Oh buoy, what a great video!" Musk wrote on X on Friday. There may not be many more ocean splashdowns in Ship's future.

SpaceX plans to bring the upper stage as well as Super Heavy back for launch-tower landings in the future — something that seems quite achievable given the performance on Flight 5, according to Musk.

"Starship achieved a precise, soft landing in the ocean, paving the way for return to launch site and being caught by the tower arms, like the booster.

Full & rapid reusability improves the cost of access to orbit & beyond by >10,000%. It is the fundamental technology breakthrough needed to make life multiplanetary and for us to become a true spacefaring civilization," the billionaire entrepreneur wrote in another Friday X post.

As that post notes, SpaceX is developing Starship, the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built, to help humanity settle the moon and Mars.

The company believes that its combination of brawn and full, rapid reusability can help make such long-held dreams come true.

Clergy sex abuse scandals have rocked Catholic churches across the world, but few places have seen the financial toll of the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

With a record $880-million settlement with victims announced this week, the Los Angeles Archdiocese has now paid out more than $1.5 billion.

The bill reflects its rank as the largest archdiocese in the nation, with more than 4 million members, and a California law that gave accusers more time to file suit.

But attorneys and others who have been involved in more than two decades of litigation say it also is an indication of the failures of church leaders to identify molesting priests and prevent them from committing more crimes.

Some of those priests, after undergoing treatment at residential centers, were shuffled to new parishes, frequently in immigrant neighborhoods where the abuse would continue.

With the latest settlements, the number of people alleging abuse now stands at nearly 2,500.

But the true number could be much higher, lawyers say.

One reason for the size of L.A.'s payout is that the California Legislature in 2019 opted to give adults more time to file lawsuits over childhood sexual abuse, which prompted more survivors to come forward. This extended the amount of time available for litigation compared with other states, which were also roiled by abuse scandals.

"The L.A. archdiocese is not an anomaly," attorney Mike Reck said. "It’s larger and been subject to more litigation and so we have found out a lot more about how it operated. I am not sure the archdiocese is worse than other places. I think we just don’t know as much about other dioceses."

The abuse — and efforts to cover it up — dates back decades.

It reaches into the highest levels of the church. Msgr. Benjamin Hawkes, the second-in-command to two cardinals and a well-known leader who was the inspiration for Robert De Niro's character in the movie "True Confessions," was accused after his death of abuse.

Troves of church documents that served as a road map for the cover-up placed extreme scrutiny on Cardinal Roger Mahony, whose handling of clergy abuse has been roundly criticized.

Mahony, the archbishop of Los Angeles for more than two decades, was a youthful and high-profile leader who used his position atop the diocese in the 1980s and 1990s to champion social and economic justice, among other causes large and small. But his legacy was obliterated after it was revealed that he supervised the reassignment of numerous priests who admitted to or were accused of molesting young children.

With the behavior left unchecked, the number of victims within the largest archdiocese in the United States grew exponentially.

"The real fault lies at the feet of Roger Mahony," said attorney John Manly, who for decades has represented victims of sexual abuse. "He could have come here in 1986 and made the change. Instead, he chose to conceal it from the public, the media and, more importantly, law enforcement."

The culture of secrecy and the practice of shifting accused priests between parishes rather than alerting law enforcement — a feature of the scandal that played out in dioceses across the country — was also a persistent issue in Los Angeles. Delayed enforcement against the accused priests allowed them to move between locations and abuse other children, victims' advocates say.

The list of abusers within the Archdiocese in Los Angeles includes more than 500 names, according to the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

"There has been a continuous, uninterrupted flow of hundreds of perpetrators in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,"said Patrick Wall, an advocate for survivors of sexual abuse and a former Benedictine monk.

Mahony could not immediately be reached for comment.

Mahony wrote in a letter in 2013 that he had made "mistakes" in handling sexual abuse, but added that he followed the procedures that were in place at dioceses across the country: to remove priests from active ministry if there was reasonable suspicion that abuse had occurred and refer them to a residential treatment center.

He did not know at the time, he wrote, that "following these procedures was not effective, and that perpetrators were incapable of being treated in such a way that they could safely pursue priestly ministry."

"Nothing in my own background or education equipped me to deal with this grave problem," he wrote.

Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez in 2013 temporarily relieved Mahony of all public duties over his mishandling of the sex abuse scandal, a move that was unprecedented at the time in the American Catholic Church.

Mahony, now in his late 80s, lived for several years on the campus of a parish in the San Fernando Valley. After his retirement, he vowed to devote more time to immigration reform,a lifelong passion for him that stems from his experiences with migrant workers in the fields of the San Joaquin Valley during his years in the Fresno and Stockton diocese.

The church's own records, shielded by an army of lawyers for decades,revealed an orchestrated conspiracy to prevent authorities from learning of criminal behavior.

In memos written in 1986 and 1987, Msgr. Thomas Curry, then the archdiocese's advisor on sex abuse cases, proposed ways to prevent police from investigating priestswho had admitted to church officials that they abused children. Curry suggested to Mahony that the diocese prevent the priests from seeing therapists who might alert authorities and that they give the priests out-of-state assignments to avoid a criminal investigation.

Msgr. Peter Garcia admitted to church officials to preying on undocumented children in predominantly Spanish-speaking parishes. After he was discharged from a treatment center, Mahony told him to stay away from California to avoid legal repercussions, according to internal church files.

"I believe that if Monsignor Garcia were to reappear here within the archdiocese we might very well have some type of legal action filed in both the criminal and civil sectors," the archbishop wrote to the treatment center’s director in July 1986.

Garcia left the priesthood in 1989 and was never prosecuted. He died in 2009.

Another priest, Father Michael Baker — one of the church's most prolific abusers — had been accused of molesting at least 40 boys during his decades in the priesthood. In 2007, Baker pleaded guilty in criminal court to abusing two boys.He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was released in 2011 based on the time he'd served in county jail and good behavior.

Two brothers alleged that Baker began abusing them at St. Hilary Catholic Church in Pico Rivera in 1984 when they were 5 and 7, according to court records. The boys' family moved to Mexico in 1986,but Baker, over the next 13 years, flew them to Los Angeles, Palm Springs and Arizona, where the abuse allegedly continued until 1999, at least once in the priest's rectory in Los Angeles County, court records show.

Records show that Mahony knew about Baker's sexual abuse of boys decades before it came to light publicly.

In 1986, Baker first broached the topic in a note to the cardinal after Mahony appealed for priests to report inappropriate behavior, according to internal church records.

"During the priest retreat … you provided us with an invitation to talk to you about the shadow that some of us might have," Baker wrote. "I would like to take you up on the invitation."

At a spiritual retreat in December 1986, Baker made a full confession and was transferred to a treatment facility in New Mexico.The police were not notified, and no effort was made to contact the children who had been abused, according to church records.

Baker returned to ministry in the Los Angeles Archdiocese in 1987, church records show. At the time, Mahony informed Baker that he was not permitted to be left alone with a child, but records show that Baker violated this directive on at least three occasions, all of which were observed by archdiocesan personnel.

Baker remained in the ministry until 2000, when he was defrocked, church records show. In 2002, as the clergy abuse scandal came to light, The Times revealed that the archdiocese secretly paid $1.3 million to two of Baker’s victims two years before.

Intelsat 33e loses power in geostationary orbit

October 19, 2024

Intelsat 33e has lost power in geostationary orbit and the satellite is no longer providing communications for customers across Europe, Africa and parts of Asia Pacific, its operator announced Oct. 19.

Intelsat said it is working with satellite maker Boeing to address the anomaly, but “believe it is unlikely that the satellite will be recoverable.”

An Intelsat spokesperson said the satellite was not insured at the time of the issue.

The company said in a brief news release it is working to move customers to other satellites in Intelsat’s fleet or spacecraft operated by third parties.

Intelsat 33e launched in August 2016 and entered service in January 2017 at 60 degrees East, about three months later than planned following an issue with its primary thruster.

A second propulsion issue that emerged during in-orbit tests helped knock off around 3.5 years from the satellite’s initially estimated 15-year lifespan.

Intelsat 33e is the second in Intelsat’s EpicNG (next-generation) series of high-throughput satellites.

The first, Intelsat-29e, was declared a total loss in 2019 after just three years in orbit.

That failure was pinned on either a meteoroid impact or a wiring flaw that led to an electrostatic discharge following heightened solar weather activity.

Two EF-18 Hornets from the Spanish Air and Space Force responded to the presence of a Russian drone in Romania

20 October, 2024

Two EF-18 Hornet fighter-bombers from the Spanish Air and Space Force, operating in Romania as part of Detachment Paznic, were deployed to respond to the presence of a Russian drone detected by the Romanian and NATO surveillance systems.

According to the Spanish General Staff of Defense (EMAD), the Hornets, along with Romanian F-16 fighters, formed the quick reaction force deployed following the alert triggered by Romania’s surveillance system.

A potential Russian unmanned aircraft had been detected flying over the Black Sea, heading toward Romanian territory, approximately 150 km east of Mihail Kogălniceanu, in Constanța County.

In its statement, the EMAD also mentioned that “…Given the drone’s trajectory towards NATO airspace, the Combined Air Operations Center in Torrejón (CAOC-TJ) ordered the Spanish EF-18 Hornets from Detachment ‘Paznic’ to scramble and establish a patrol along the Black Sea coast…”

As the Russian drone moved closer to the Romanian border, two F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter-bombers from the Romanian Air Force’s 86th Air Base in Borcea were also deployed to monitor the situation.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that “…radar signals indicated the drone crossed into Romanian airspace around 7:00 PM, near the town of Eforie Nord, and then continued towards Topraisar…”

“…The aerial surveillance radars continuously tracked the drone’s path, which penetrated as far as 14 kilometers into Romanian territory…”

The fighter jets were unable to make visual contact with the target at any point along its route, and the surveillance system lost radar contact east of the city of Amzacea around 7:20 PM.

After completing their mission, the Spanish EF-18s landed at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, having been relieved by the Romanian Air Force F-16s.

In addition to the fighter-bombers, the French Army’s MAMBA anti-aircraft artillery battery, U.S. maritime patrol aircraft, and helicopters based at Mihail Kogalniceanu participated in the search operation.

It is worth noting that in early October, Spanish and Romanian fighter-bombers were scrambled in response to the potential violation of Romanian airspace by Russian drones, following an attack on Ukrainian cities near the border.

Each and Every One of Us Was ‘Born for Such a Time as This’

Christians who believe they should not be involved in politics—not even to participate by voting—need to read and reflect on the story of Esther from the Bible.

Esther rose from being a lowly nobody in the court of King Ahasuerus (Xerxes) to influencing the entire Jewish nation. She humbly considered using the opportunity presented at an extremely critical, life-and-death moment not only for herself and her family but for every Jew alive in the kingdom.

From the life of Esther, we get the phrase, “born for such a time as this.” Esther’s cousin and guardian, Mordecai, reminded her of that fact when she came to a life-altering crossroad.

Esther saw herself not only as a Jew but as someone who had influence with the ruler of her country. As an individual, she had the opportunity—again, knowing that her attempt could lead to her execution—to “speak truth to power” by approaching the king with a vital request.

An evil man named Haman had twisted the truth about the Jews living in the land and had hatched a plan to turn King Xerxes against them. Certain annihilation awaited the Jewish people—unless someone put his or her own life on the line to save them.

Esther was one seemingly insignificant person, but her boldness in doing God’s will gave her great power.

And because she took a chance when the opportunity presented itself, not only did she save her own people, but she set in motion the turning of the tables on the evil-doers of her day. The king was alerted to the true malevolence that the vindictive Haman had inserted into his kingdom—and he immediately set the situation aright. So, each and every one of us, like Esther, has been “born for such a time as this.” All of us, whether we follow the God of the Bible or not, have a unique opportunity where we are and for every day of our lives to make a difference.

God provides signs of His existence if we choose to keep our eyes open. He does exist, He does love us, and He is still involved in the affairs of men and women.

For Americans, we were born into a country established on the concept of rule by “We the People.” We are not subject to a series of kings, good or bad. We have the power to vote into office representatives who carry out our needs and desires. And, asChristians, we have “dual citizenship”—citizens both in heaven and on Earth. Which means we are certainly part of the We in “We the People.”

Therefore, each one of us needs to take our role seriously. And as followers of this amazing God, we must become involved in what He is doing. We “make our plans” and “God will direct our steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

Things certainly could have gone differently for Esther. After all, we are also told in Scripture that “the battle belongs to the Lord.” The Lord could have chosen to let the Jewish people suffer a terrible fate. But, the prayers and actions of this one righteous woman turned out to be “powerful and effective.”

8 Reasons Why Conservatives Lose

It is time to face the harsh reality of why the extreme left has been able to seize power in the United States: the logical and inescapable corollary to the left’s victory is the right’s defeat. The conservative professional political class lost.

Yet the right refuses even to acknowledge the left’s victory. The reason is clear. If you admit that the left won, then people will start to ask why the right lost, and the next logical question is why we should continue listening to what they say, giving them money, and so forth.

It has now become so glaring that a few are starting to acknowledge their uselessness:

The establishment Right’s failures over the last generations have been manifold. … Since the end of the Cold War, what trajectory-altering successes or victories can the Right cite to demonstrate its worth? … Despite spending billions of dollars supporting its infrastructure…the establishment Right has registered no clear gains and many clear losses. Much of the nation was conquered on its watch.

Thus writes the editor of an unusually forthright recent book assessing professional conservatism. One contributor goes farther. “You could even argue that it abetted most of it[s defeats],” he suggests. “Where official conservatism’s opposition hasn’t been ineffectual, it’s been collaborationist.”[1]

Conservative media today are full of horror stories about the wicked deeds of the left (and they are indeed wicked). They rant and rave, and then they offer wish lists of how they would put things to rights if they had magic wands. But about their own failure, the silence is deafening. This confirms suspicions that the failure involves more: incompetence, cowardice, perfidy, or betrayal.

Imagine a military leader or athletic coach, reviewing a recent defeat with his team, who just lambasted the opposing side for their successes but never critiqued his own team’s performance or told his men how to improve.

With the left having ascended to unprecedented power over the U.S. government (and most Western governments), one might have thought that conservatives would reassess what they may be doing wrong. But no, they expect to dig themselves out of the mess they permitted by doing more of the things that got them into the mess in the first place.

This is not limited to the Republican Party: “RINOs,” “neocons,” etc. It involves the entire professional conservative political class: pressure groups, think-tanks, media, law firms, colleges and universities. One defeat after another.

Why? Here are eight reasons that I would have thought are fairly obvious but apparently need to be rubbed into their faces:

1.Professional conservatives seldom even acknowledge that they were defeated. The quotations above are exceptional, and even if I missed others, this is hardly soul-searching. (I examine these meager exceptions in a book review.)

2.Professional conservatives do not understand why they were defeated and do not want to understand. When was the last time you heard a conservative leader explaining what they did wrong, let alone expressing any desire to learn from their mistakes and endeavoring to correct them? What can we expect but more mistakes?

3.Conservative politicos are highly authoritarian and do not tolerate criticism, not even constructive criticism, so here again they never learn from their failures. Naturally, this leads to more failures. I have published a series of articles showing that censorship (“cancel culture”) is at least as ruthless at conservative institutions and organizations, such as their colleges and universities (also usually failures), as it is at “mainstream” or leftist ones.

4.Conservative leaders’ main priority is not to address public problems or oppose the left, but to build power bases and fiefdoms for themselves:media, lobbies, law firms, think-tanks, colleges and universities. These exist to enhance the power and influence of conservative kingpins, not address America’s problems or the abuses of power that afflict ordinary Americans. High-profile conservative leaders enjoy power and wealth. Self-criticism or friendly criticism (see #3 above) — let alone a healthy range of views — could cause donations to dry up.

5.Professional politicos, including conservative ones, develop a vested interest in perpetuating the problems they claim to be combating. Like everyone in Washington (and in state capitals, European capitals…). What they complain about regarding their favorite villains — federal bureaucrats — is equally true of themselves: they are paid to address problems, and so they have no intention of allowing those problems to go away. If your livelihood depends on solving problems, you will not be in any hurry to solve them. On the contrary, you will do anything to make sure those problems never go away, and you may look for opportunities to make them worse.

6.Many conservative professionals are lawyers who love to sue.Lawsuits depend on injuries. Rather than preventing the injuries in the first place, it is better to wait until people are injured and then select a few cases for sensational, high-profile, lucrative litigation. Cases take months or years to resolve, and even if they win, it takes more years for a decision to trickle down through the courts, if it ever does. Thus, they provide no immediate protection or relief for anyone. But they provide lots of money for lawyers.

7.Conservative groups imitate leftist ones and collude with them.This is especially true when the left is winning (like now), because conservatives envy the left’s success and power and want to share it. Their latest ploy involves bringing less extreme leftists (invariably female ones in distress) on stage to fight their battles for them, thus allowing the left to control the terms of debate.

8.Conservatives are contemptuous of ordinary Americans.Hardships inflicted by America’s crooked Judiciary, social welfare machinery, and regulatory labyrinth go unchallenged because they are under the media radar screen and often because they are perpetrated by conservatives’ own friends in the bar associations, government bureaucracies, and giant corporations.

In short, professional conservatism simply does not work. It can never work, and it can never end in anything other than defeat, because paying people to perform your civic responsibilities for you amounts to farming out your citizenship to a different group of overlords. It is like hiring mercenaries to fight your battles. Eventually, they start obeying whoever pays them more. Citizenship is like anything else: if you want it done right…

Political professionalism (“politics as a vocation,” in the words of sociologist Max Weber) was invented by the left, and it serves leftists’ interests well. It does not work for the rest of us, whose aim is to control those zealots whom Lenin exalted as “professional revolutionaries” and professional radicals. Creating a class of professional counter-revolutionaries and conservatives does not check or counteract the left; it merely expands the political class and provides the left with collaborators and infiltrators.

This is the central conundrum of democracy: we say that We the People govern, but in practice we quickly delegate our authority to paid government officials. When those officials inevitably abuse that power in flagrant ways, we then hire paid activists, who abuse their power in more subtle ways, but the result is the same. They pretend to hold the officials to account but readily collude with them.[2]
