Columbine shooting survivor Anne Marie Hochhalter dies

 

DENVER (KDVR) — Anne Marie Hochhalter, a survivor of the Columbine High School mass shooting, died Sunday, her former principal, Frank DeAngelis, told FOX31 on Monday.

 

Hochhalter, 43, was shot and paralyzed during the tragedy on April 20, 1999, and used a wheelchair in the 25 years since. During the massacre, two seniors shot and killed 12 students and one teacher, then killed themselves. Another 21 people were injured by the gunfire.

 

Hochhalter spoke out in 2016 in support of the mother of one of the shooters who released a book reflecting on the mass shooting, especially concerning her relationship with grief and battles with shame.

 

Hochhalter wrote at the time in a lengthy Facebook post that she wasn’t sure she would ever read the book, but said she had forgiven the mass murderer’s mother.

 

In 2012, Hochhalter also spoke publicly in support of the families and survivors of the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Thor's Helmet versus the Seagull

 

Seen as a seagull and a duck, these nebulae are not the only cosmic clouds to evoke images of flight. But both are winging their way across this broad celestial landscape, spanning almost 7 degrees across planet Earth's night sky toward the constellation of the Big Dog (Canis Major). The expansive Seagull (top center) is itself composed of two major cataloged emission nebulas. Brighter NGC 2327 forms the head with the more diffuse IC 2177 as the wings and body. Impressively, the Seagull's wingspan would correspond to about 250 light-years at the nebula's estimated distance of 3,800 light-years. At the lower right, the Duck appears much more compact and would span only about 50 light-years given its 15,000 light-year distance estimate. Blown by energetic winds from an extremely massive, hot star near its center, the Duck nebula is cataloged as NGC 2359. Of course, the Duck's thick body and winged appendages also lend it the slightly more dramatic popular moniker, Thor's Helmet.

NOAA, NASA brace for major job cuts

The layoffs of thousands of government workers are likely to expand — possibly as soon as Tuesday — to two key climate science and extreme weather agencies: NOAA and NASA.

Why it matters: These agencies keep tabs on the planet's weather and climate and are considered to be in the top tier of such government departments worldwide.

Zoom in: In keeping with the size of cuts to other government departments, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is thought to be in line for as much as a 10% reduction in staff, which would amount to about 1,000 workers.

 

NOAA is a small organization, with only about 12,000 employees spread across functions from climate and weather forecasting to oceans research and fisheries regulation.

Deep cuts could imperil some of its work, particularly that of the National Weather Service, which has been short-staffed in recent years.

The intrigue: It's possible that NWS would receive a public safety exemption to keep their meteorologists from being on the chopping block, but that was unclear over the weekend.

 

The stated mission of the Weather Service includes "the protection of life and property," but such exemptions were being granted sparingly agency by agency.

Zoom out: Billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been reviewing contracts at NASA and accessing IT systems at NOAA.

 

These are two agencies where Musk has conflicts of interest given the activities of his company SpaceX.

The firm is a major NASA contractor, and NOAA and NASA are studying the effects of frequent rocket launches as well as reentry of used satellites into Earth's upper atmosphere.

Driving the news: Layoffs across the government are already reaching other energy and environmental agencies.

 

The cuts include DOE offices expanded or launched under the 2021 infrastructure law and 2022 IRA, per Axios sources and published reports on Friday.

DOE is axing roughly 50 workers in DOE's loan programs office, a major source of finance for commercializing low-carbon tech projects that got more muscular under the IRA.

Other cuts hit the Grid Deployment Office, according to a former DOE official who requested anonymity to share details that have not been made public.

 

DOE also laid off substantial numbers of staff at the Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains and the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, the former official said.

Catch up quick: Agencies are losing many probationary workers — people often a year or less into the job, though time periods vary.

 

EPA terminated 388 probationary workers, the agency said Friday, citing a "thorough review of agency functions in accordance with President Trump's executive orders."

Friction point: Capitol Hill Democrats are demanding info on the layoffs as they criticize the cuts but lack power to force disclosures.

The Committee on House Administrations Oversight panel met to hear testimonies from whistleblowers on why it took so long for the National Guard to respond to the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

Lawmakers met for witness testimony in a hearing called “Three Years Later: D.C. National Guard Whistleblowers Speak Out on January 6 Delay” on Wednesday.

 

Chairman Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) kicked off the hearing by shedding light on a November 2021 report from the Department of Defense’s Acting Inspector General. The report detailed the DOD’s response to January 6th, claiming that the National Guard was deployed as soon as possible.

 

However, the Georgia Republican said it took three hours and 19 minutes to deploy troops on January 6th after receiving orders.

Those testifying Wednesday included:

 

Colonel Earl Matthews – Chief Legal Advisor, D.C. Army National Guard

 

Command Sergeant Major Michael Brooks – Senior Enlisted Officer, D.C. Army National Guard

 

Captain Timothy Nick – Aide-de-camp, D.C. Army National Guard

 

Brigadier General Aaron Dean – Adjutant General, D.C. Army National Guard

 

In regards to the Inspector General’s 2021 report, Loudermilk said the report concludes that the leader of the National Guard response, Maj. Gen. William Walker, received two orders from then U.S. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy to deploy troops to the Capitol, once at 4:45 pm and again at 5:00 pm.

 

“Walker denies that either of these calls took place,” Loudermilk said. “Despite the many inconsistencies and contradictions of the DOD’s responsibility that day, the select committee on January 6th ignored these discrepancies despite them being shared privately by their own staff and barreled forward with the DOD’s side of the story.”

 

The hearing comes after the oversight panel published a never-before released transcribed interview from Trump’s former White House deputy chief of staff Anthony Ornato, which showed that the former president offered 10,000 National troops to secure the Capitol. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D-Washington D.C.), however, rejected the call.

 

Loudermilk said the now-defunct January select committee withheld Ornato’s “critical witness testimony from the American people because it contradicted their predetermined narrative.”

 

Colonel Earl Matthews accused two senior officers of the army, Gen. Charles Flynn and Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt of lying to Congress and federal investigators about why it took so long to deploy the National Guard.

 

“That DOD IG report is replete with incorrect, false information,” Matthews asserted.

 

The inspector general blamed the delay on lack of coordination but all witnesses said the National Guard was ready, had the DOD told them to go when they were supposed to.

Matthews sent a memo to the House J6 committee as well as a Senate committee accusing the Army officers of misleading Congress after the 2021 report.

 

Since coming forward, Matthews hasn’t been promoted. This comes after a promotion board in November 2022 recommended he was one of the “best qualified” group of Army Reserve colonels to be promoted to brigadier general.

 

He later filed a complaint alleging retaliation for testifying to Congress and asked for those responsible to be reprimanded.

“If public confidence in the integrity of government operations is to be restored,” the complaint said, “he must be made whole and the responsible officials appropriately disciplined.”

 

Also during Wednesday’s testimony, Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Brooks, said the delay was due to Secretary McCarthy and other officials being more concerned about “optics.”

“I have no idea why we never received that order,” Brooks said. “All I do know is that they were more concerned with what it would look like with soldiers with the Capitol in the background than protecting the Capitol of the united states.”

 

Loudermilk said the hearing left them with more questions that need to be answered.

A former D.C. National Guard official is accusing two senior Army leaders of lying to Congress and participating in a secret attempt to rewrite the history of the military’s response to the Capitol riot.

 

In a 36-page memo, Col. Earl Matthews, who held high-level National Security Council and Pentagon roles during the Trump administration, slams the Pentagon’s inspector general for what he calls an error-riddled report that protects a top Army official who argued against sending the National Guard to the Capitol on Jan. 6, delaying the insurrection response for hours.

 

Matthews’ memo, sent to the Jan. 6 select committee this month and obtained by POLITICO, includes detailed recollections of the insurrection response as it calls two Army generals — Gen. Charles Flynn, who served as deputy chief of staff for operations on Jan. 6, and Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt, the director of Army staff — “absolute and unmitigated liars” for their characterization of the events of that day. Matthews has never publicly discussed the chaos of the Capitol siege.

 

On Jan. 6, Matthews was serving as the top attorney to Maj. Gen. William Walker, then commanding general of the D.C. National Guard. Matthews’ memo defends the Capitol attack response by Walker, who now serves as the House sergeant at arms, amplifying Walker’s previous congressional testimony about the hourslong delay in the military’s order for the D.C. National Guard to deploy to the riot scene.

 

“Every leader in the D.C. Guard wanted to respond and knew they could respond to the riot at the seat of government” before they were given clearance to do so on Jan. 6, Matthews’ memo reads. Instead, he said, D.C. guard officials “set [sic] stunned watching in the Armory” during the first hours of the attack on Congress during its certification of the 2020 election results.

 

Matthews’ memo levels major accusations: that Flynn and Piatt lied to Congress about their response to pleas for the D.C. Guard to quickly be deployed on Jan. 6; that the Pentagon inspector general’s November report on Army leadership’s response to the attack was “replete with factual inaccuracies”; and that the Army has created its own closely held revisionist document about the Capitol riot that’s “worthy of the best Stalinist or North Korea propagandist.”

 

The memo follows Walker’s own public call for the inspector general to retract its detailed report on the events of Jan. 6, as first reported by The Washington Post. Walker told the Post he objected to specific allegations by the Pentagon watchdog that Matthews’ memo also criticizes, calling the inspector general’s report “inaccurate” and “sloppy work.”

 

The new memo from Matthews, who now serves in the Army reserves, emerges as officials involved in the response that day try to explain their decision-making to investigators. The House select committee has probed the attack for months, and earlier this year top officials testified before the House oversight panel.

 

Reached for comment, Matthews said the memo he wrote is entirely accurate. “Our Army has never failed us and did not do so on January 6, 2021,” he said. “However, occasionally some of our Army leaders have failed us and they did so on January 6th. Then they lied about it and tried to cover it up. They tried to smear a good man and to erase history.”

 

Flynn, now the commanding general of the U.S. Army Pacific, and Piatt didn’t respond to messages. Army spokesperson Mike Brady said in a statement that the service’s “actions on January 6th have been well-documented and reported on, and Gen. Flynn and Lt. Gen. Piatt have been open, honest and thorough in their sworn testimony with Congress and DOD investigators.”

Lawyers say Muskegon, Michigan Election Fraud Scandal Could Allow DOJ to Unpack 2020 Voter Fraud

 

The left and the mainstream media have for years said that there is no such thing as voter fraud in American elections and that there is no credible evidence of voter fraud.

 

On election night 2020, Trump was winning throughout the night. It was a tough re-election campaign, the media lies and interference into the election to help support Joe Biden was in full force, but Republicans felt as though they were going to be poised to replicate the stunning victory in 2016 by appealing to this new Trump voting bloc who loved the 45th President.

 

Around midnight, returns started coming in that defied explanation. Reports started emerging of suspicious events happening in all the key battleground states.

 

Some of the lessons election integrity investigators learned from 2020 is that there is voter fraud throughout America’s election systems, in a variety of complex ways. There is small ‘retail’ fraud where people are voting for their deceased relatives, there are people who live abroad who are still voting in America even though they are arguably no longer citizens. There are Canadians who have abused America’s lax election laws so that they can vote in U.S. elections.

When the voter rolls are inflated with bogus and fake names, it’s easy for people to use registrations from decades ago to vote, which is what is happening when empty fields are being used as the registration address for people voting from abroad. There are people who register from a non-existent address claiming they are homeless people voting.

 

This kind of ‘retail’ fraud exists and predominantly seems to occur in Democrat jurisdictions where the votes tallied end up supporting the Democrat establishment.

 

Then there are localized instances of voter fraud where larger, systemic, voter fraud is occurring. This is what Project Veritas discovered in Hamtramck, Michigan where the local power structure used batches of illegally-obtained ballots, where people went door to door bullying them out of residents, then auctioning them off at ‘midnight meetings’ where they can be filled out by the politically-connected in order to maintain a local power structure. In this way, Democrats who were white liberals and pro-gay were displaced by Muslim Democrats who pushed out fellow Democrats using these tactics.

“LTG Piatt stated that it would not be his best military advice to recommend to the Secretary of the Army that the D.C. National Guard be allowed to deploy to the Capitol at that time,” Matthews wrote, adding: “LTGs Piatt and Flynn stated that the optics of having uniformed military personnel deployed to the U.S. Capitol would not be good.”

Piatt and Flynn suggested instead that Guardsmen take over D.C. police officers’ traffic duties so those officers could head to the Capitol, Matthews continues.

 

In addition to Matthews’ memo, POLITICO also obtained a document produced by a D.C. Guard official and dated Jan. 7 that lays out a timeline of Jan. 6. The D.C. Guard timeline, a separate document whose author took notes during the call, also said that Piatt and Flynn at 2:37 p.m. “recommended for DC Guard to standby,” rather than immediately deploying to the Capitol during the riot.

 

Four minutes later, according to that Guard timeline, Flynn again “advised D.C. National Guard to standby until the request has been routed” to then-Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and then-acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller.

Everyone on the call was “astounded” except Piatt and Flynn, Matthews wrote.

Both men, however, later denied to Congress that they had said the Guard shouldn’t deploy to the Capitol.

In response to a written question from House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) in June about whether Piatt advised anyone in the Guard’s chain of command not to deploy directly to the Capitol, Piatt wrote, “At no point on January 6 did I tell anyone that the D.C. National Guard should not deploy directly to the Capitol.”

 

That statement, Matthews says in his memo, is “false and misleading.”

Walker also testified to Congress in March that Piatt and Flynn expressed concerns about “optics.”

Further, Flynn told Maloney that he “never expressed a concern about the visuals, image, or public perception of” sending Guardsmen to the Capitol.

That answer, Matthews says in his memo, is “outright perjury.”

Matthews wrote that he and Walker “heard Flynn identify himself and unmistakably heard him say that optics of a National Guard presence on Capitol Hill was an issue for him. That it would not look good. Either Piatt or Flynn mentioned ‘peaceful protestors.’”

 

Flynn’s brother, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, promulgated a host of conspiracy theories in the lead-up to Jan. 6 and called for former President Donald Trump to impose martial law. Matthews’ memo does not insinuate that Gen. Charles Flynn’s actions on Jan. 6 were shaped by his brother, who has been subpoenaed by the select committee, and does not mention Michael Flynn.

 

The two generals told the House oversight committee that the Guard wasn’t ready to respond to the chaos that day, and Flynn testified to the House Oversight Committee in June that a “team of over 40 officers and non-commissioned officers immediately worked to recall the 154 D.C. National Guard personnel from their current missions, reorganize them, re-equip them, and begin to redeploy them to the Capitol.” Matthews says that assertion “constituted the willful deception of Congress.”

 

“If it does not constitute the willful and deliberate misleading of Congress, then nothing does,” Matthews wrote of Flynn’s statement. “Flynn was referring to 154 D.C. Guardsmen who were already on duty, were trained in civil disturbance response, already had area familiarization with Washington, DC, were properly kitted and were delayed only because of inaction and inertia at the Pentagon.”

 

In other words, Matthews indicates, the idea that it took 40 officers to get 154 National Guard personnel ready to go to the Capitol beggars belief.

Every D.C. Guard leader was desperate to get to the Capitol to help, Matthews writes — then stunned by the delay in deployment. Responding to civil unrest in Washington is “a foundational mission, a statutory mission of the D.C. National Guard,” his memo notes.

That report states that McCarthy had to call Walker twice on Jan. 6 to order him to deploy the D.C. Guard. Matthews’ memo calls this “an outrageous assertion … as insulting as it is false,” and says McCarthy himself was “incommunicado or unreachable for most of the afternoon.”

 

The inspector general’s report says McCarthy arrived at the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department at 4:05 p.m., and that “witnesses told us that not having heard from MG Walker regarding any specific plan.” McCarthy and others present, including D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee, themselves drafted a comprehensive plan for the Guard’s deployment, according to the Pentagon watchdog.

 

The report further says that soon afterward, Miller and Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, reviewed that plan over the phone. Miller authorized the deployment of the D.C. Guard and McCarthy informed Walker of it during a call at 4:35 p.m; McCarthy then held apress conference with the D.C. mayor and called Walker again to reissue the order that he deploy the Guard, according to the Pentagon inspector general.

 

Matthews challenges that Jan. 6 timetable in his memo. He writes that D.C. Guard leaders “still have not seen this so-called plan developed by McCarthy and allegedly approved by Acting Secretary Miller at 4:32PM.” He adds that the idea that the Army secretary would give Guard personnel support for tactical planning and coordination is “patently absurd.”

 

Walker, meanwhile, has said no call happened between him and McCarthy at 4:35 p.m. The D.C. Guard’s Jan. 6 timeline — produced while Walker helmed the D.C. National Guard — does not document any phone call between McCarthy and Walker at 4:35.

 

Both McCarthy and Miller declined to comment.

 

Megan Reed, a spokesperson for the Pentagon inspector general, said their office stands by its report.

 

Matthews’ memo also homes in on a document that Army officials have referenced but never fully revealed, titled “Report of the Army’s Operations on January 6 2021.” In Matthews’ view, it lays out a fabricated timeline in a bid to burnish the Army’s reputation.

 

According to Matthews, Piatt helped produce the document after a series of bruising congressional hearings and news reports that damaged the reputations of Army senior leadership — among them, a Washington Post report that the Army falsely denied Flynn’s participation in the 2:30 p.m. phone call.

 

“In March 2021, MG Walker was told by a friend that LTG Piatt was so upset with MG Walker that he directed the development of an Army ‘White Paper’ to retell events of 6 January in a light more favorable to LTGs Flynn, Piatt, Secretary McCarthy and the Army Staff,” Matthews writes.

 

The Army Staff ultimately sought “to create an alternate history which would be the Army’s official recollection of events,” Matthews continues, adding: “The end product, a revisionist tract worthy of the best Stalinist or North Korea propagandist, was close hold,” kept secret from the public.

 

But members of Congress have seen the document. Piatt referenced it during a House Oversight Committee hearing in June when asked about conflicting recollections of the afternoon of Jan. 6.

 

“I would refer to the U.S. Army Report of Operations on January 6 that we submitted to this committee,” Piatt told lawmakers. “What the D.C. National Guard did in those short hours was extraordinary. Now when people’s lives are on the line, two minutes is too long. But we were not positioned to respond to that urgent request. We had to re-prepare so we would send them in prepared for … this new mission.”

Perseverance’s drives over the last few weeks have doubled back several times. Why such an unconventional route?

Team scientists have been delighted to find new kinds of rocks that could be the oldest ever found on Mars and are eager to collect samples.

Perseverance embarked on the Crater Rim Campaign in search of ancient uplifted rock, to better understand the geologic processes occurring early in Mars’ history, and search for ancient habitable environments.

 

Recent discoveries have not disappointed: so far in this portion of the rim, every outcrop that the rover has taken a close look at using the science instruments on its robotic arm has ended up being something new.

As explained in the previous update, after acquiring the “Silver Mountain” core, which is rich in the mineral pyroxene, Perseverance approached a nearby rock that had signatures of the mineral serpentine, fittingly nicknamed “Serpentine Lake.”

Following this, the rover used its abrasion tool to clean the rock of dust and coatings for detailed scientific interrogation, and the team was wowed by the intriguing rock texture, which resembles “cookies & cream” dessert (see photo above), and the very high abundance of minerals like serpentine, which form in the presence of water.

 

After finishing that investigation, the operations team decided to have Perseverance head back along its path once more to the site of its first abrasion in this part of the rim, named “Cat Arm Reservoir,” to acquire a sample.

Results from that earlier analysis showed a rock texture with coarse pyroxene and feldspar crystals consistent with an igneous origin. However, the sample tube turned up empty.

What happened? Perseverance has encountered this problem before: flashback to our first ever coring attempt.

 

It’s not a common occurrence, but sometimes the rocks Perseverance tries to sample are so weak that upon coring they essentially disintegrate into a powder instead of remaining in the tube.

The rover drove to a nearby spot and tried again, but when a second attempt to core this rock did not retain any sample, the team decided to move on.

 

This week, Perseverance will return once again to the site of the Serpentine Lake abrasion patch to acquire a core of this fascinating rock, which records intense alteration by water.

The team hopes that it will prove strong enough to acquire a core, and if successful, Perseverance may perform more scans on the abrasion patch.

Afterward, the plan is to drive downhill to an area called “Broom Point,” home to a spectacular sequence of layered rock, where I’m sure more surprises and exciting scientific discoveries await.

ICYMI: Kevin Spacey is facing another British lawsuit alleging sexual abuse, just over 18 months after he was cleared of all charges in a high-profile criminal trial.

 

The Oscar-winning actor, 65, was sued in a civil suit by a claimant at London's High Court last Wednesday, according to court records. No details of the lawsuit were available.

 

The case is also being brought against London's Old Vic theatre, where Spacey worked as artistic director from around 2003.

 

Spacey, who is facing a separate lawsuit in London for alleged sexual abuse, was not immediately available for comment.

New York’s top court has upheld the constitutionality of the state’s new ethics commission, delivering a blow to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo as he considers a run for mayor.

 

Cuomo had challenged the commission after it launched a probe of his $5 million deal to write a memoir on Covid. He won in two lower courts.

 

But the Court of Appeals sided with the state in a split 4-3 decision. The Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government does not run afoul of separation of powers rules and can continue to operate as designed, the judges said. The decision means COELIG can resume its investigation into Cuomo, just as he puts together the pieces for his likely high-profile New York City mayoral campaign.

Nasa upgrades chances of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting Earth in disaster event

Nasa has officially upgraded the likelihood of Earth being hit by asteroid 2024 YR4.

Nasa’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies, or CNEOS, now lists the chance of a collision in 2032 at 2.6 per cent, or roughly 1-in-38.

 

It has gone through a number of upgrades: the most recent estimate had put it at 2.3 per cent. At the end of January, it had been just 1 per cent.

Those changes are the result of more detailed observations, which have allowed scientists to considerably constrain the possible trajectory of the asteroid.

While it is still almost certain that the asteroid won’t hit, that work has allowed scientists to produce a possible impact risk corridor – which shows that more than 100 million people live in places that could potentially be hit by 2024 YR4.

 

Nasa’s CNEOS still ranks the asteroid as a 3 on the Torino Scale, which rates the possible danger posed by an impact.

The scale goes up to 8, but 2024 YR4 is limited because its relatively small size means that it would hit the Earth with less energy.

 

Scientists have estimated the asteroid as being probably 40-90 meters in size.

That estimate is based on the brightness – and so could vary considerably based on how shiny the surface of the rock is, which astronomers are attempting to work out with more detailed observations.

 

The asteroid is currently flying away from Earth, and is expected to disappear from view around April.

That means that further observations are being conducted in a hurry to ensure that scientists know as much about it as possible, since it will not be possible to study it again until 2028 – at which point it could be too late.

Three figures linked to multiple killings in several states, including the January shooting of a border patrol officer in Coventry, Vermont, were arrested Sunday evening in Allegany County, Maryland, according to county records.

 

Michelle Jacqueline Zajko, Daniel Arthur Blank, and Jack Amadeus LaSota — also known as “Ziz” — were arrested and charged with several misdemeanors after allegedly trespassing on private property in Frostburg, Maryland, according to court records.

 

The arrests put an end to speculation about the whereabouts of Zajko and LaSota, both of whom had been sought by law enforcement in connection with crimes in other states.

 

According to charging documents obtained by VTDigger, a Frostburg resident contacted Maryland state police around 3:30 p.m. Sunday to report two white box trucks with chains on their tires trespassing on his property.

 

The three people inside the trucks had asked if they could camp at the site for a month, according to the charging documents, but the landowner told police the people “appeared suspicious” and he wanted them off his property.

 

Officers with the state police, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources responded to the call, according to the documents.

 

One of the state police troopers, named in court records as Brandon Jeffries, approached one of the box trucks and saw a person, later identified as Daniel Blank, sitting in the passenger seat. Jeffries ordered Blank to show their hands, the filing reads, and Blank “advised that he had a learning disability and did not understand what I was saying,” Jeffries wrote.

 

Inside the other box truck, state police troopers found Zajko and LaSota, according to the charging documents, dressed all in black and wearing gun belts with ammunition.

 

Jeffries told Zajko and LaSota to exit the truck, a process that was delayed because “they were saying they were being told to (sic) many commands and were not cooperating,” the trooper wrote in the filing. “The female was crying saying not to kill her.”

 

According to Jeffries’ account, Zajko repeatedly refused to put her hands behind her back and was eventually “taken down to the ground by controlled takedown” before she was arrested. State police found a Sig Sauer handgun in Zajko’s front waistband, the charging documents said.

 

Jeffries wrote that he had also seen a long rifle in the back of the vehicle and a handgun on the front floorboard where LaSota was sitting.

 

According to the documents, Blank, LaSota and Zajko refused to give their names despite “numerous” requests and had to later be identified through photos from an FBI special agent.

 

Blank, according to the filings, “is under investigation” in connection with a double homicide in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. While the filings don’t specify which homicide, Rita and Richard Zajko — Michelle Zajko’s parents — were killed in Delaware County on Dec. 31, 2022.

 

Blank also had been reported as a “missing endangered person” in a police database, the charging documents stated.

 

“All of the subjects involved are to be questioned regarding other crimes that have occurred across the country,” according to the court documents.

‘Refrain from speculation’

 

Zajko, 32, Blank, 26, and LaSota were charged with trespassing on private property and “obstructing & hindering” a police officer, according to the records. (Court records in different states record conflicting dates of birth for LaSota.)

 

Zajko and LaSota were also charged with misdemeanor firearm possession charges, and Zajko faces an additional charge of resisting or interfering with arrest.

 

The three individuals have ties — some clearer than others — to a sprawling, mysterious group known as “Zizians,” for their following of a blog written by LaSota under the name “Ziz.”

 

A number of individuals linked to LaSota are transgender, according to media reports and acquaintances, and it’s not clear which pronouns they use. LaSota has also used the name “Andrea Phelps,” according to court records.

 

The three were booked into the Allegany County Detention Center on Sunday night. They are being held without bond but are due in court Tuesday morning for a bail review hearing.

 

Lt. Elizabeth Shoemake, the director of operations at the Allegany County Detention Center, said she could not comment on the circumstances of the arrests. But she said that, in a meeting with a court commissioner — a Maryland judicial official who helps determine the terms of bail — LaSota was “not cooperative.”

 

It was unclear whether any of the three defendants have an attorney. Daniel McGarrigle, an attorney for LaSota in the Pennsylvania case, said he was not representing LaSota in the Maryland case, and declined to comment on whether he had communicated with LaSota since the arrest yesterday.

 

McGarrigle sent VTDigger a press release from last month urging “members of the press and the public to refrain from speculation and premature conclusions.”

‘Anyone with potential connections’

 

The arrests open a new chapter in a multi-year saga involving killings in three states.

 

After a Jan. 20 shootout in Coventry that left U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland and another individual dead, federal law enforcement officials named Zajko as a “person of interest.” Officials have not explicitly spelled out Zajko’s connection to the killing, but she appears to have purchased the firearms that were used in the shooting, according to court records.

 

Zajko owns land in Derby and was at one point a Coventry resident, where she lived for an unknown period of time with Blank, according to court and municipal records.

 

Sunday’s arrest was not the first time Zajko, LaSota and Blank have all been detained together by law enforcement. In January 2023, Pennsylvania State Police arrested the trio at a Chester, Pennsylvania, hotel, as part of a state police investigation into the homicide of Rita and Richard Zajko.

 

During that arrest, according to court records, LaSota lay motionless on the ground and refused to move. Ultimately, law enforcement officers carried the 6-foot-2 LaSota out of the hotel and charged them with disorderly conduct and obstruction. LaSota later posted the $10,000 bail and did not show up for later court dates.

 

Last month, Curtis Lind, LaSota’s one-time landlord was stabbed to death outside his property in Vallejo, California. The suspect, Maximilian Snyder, applied for a marriage license last year with Teresa Youngblut, who faces charges in connection with the shooting of the border patrol agent three days after Lind’s killing.

 

Elena Russo, a spokesperson for the Maryland State Police, said in a Monday press release that the agency “is working in coordination with our federal law enforcement partners and the Office of the State’s Attorney in Allegany County as this investigation continues.”

Prosecutors with the Allegany County state’s attorney’s office could not be reached for comment.

 

Sarah Ruane, a spokesperson for the FBI’s Albany, New York, office, said in an email that the federal agency is “coordinating with our partners from Maryland State Police following the arrest of three individuals on state charges in Allegany County, Maryland.”

 

“The FBI’s investigation into the assault on U.S. Border Patrol Agent Maland remains active, and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to follow every lead and investigate anyone with potential connections to our subject,” Ruane said. “As this investigation is ongoing, we are not able to provide any additional information.”

Russia and US agree to continue Ukraine talks: Live updates 1/4

Top Russian and US diplomats have held talks in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to find a way to restore diplomatic relations, set the stage for a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, and pave the way for resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Inside the NASA-funded experiment that went tragically wrong after dolphin fell in love with his trainer

Love knows no age - and apparently for one woman, no species.

Most people can recall a questionable relationship from their 20s, but for Margaret Howe Lovatt, she had to navigate a dolphin named Peter falling in love with her.

Lovatt's love story began in the mid-1960s, when the then 23-year-old volunteered for a NASA-funded project to try and communicate with the mammals at the Dolphin Point laboratory on the Caribbean island of St. Thomas.

 

'I was curious,' Lovatt, nee Howe, told The Guardian in an interview from 2014, describing the center.

Lovatt recalled driving to the large white building where the laboratory was and meeting director of the lab Gregory Bateson, who introduced her to the animals and invited her to observe them.

Despite not having scientific training, Lovatt proved to have some astute observations about the dolphins, with Bateson inviting her to come back whenever she wanted.

 

'There were three dolphins,' Lovatt recalled. 'Peter, Pamela and Sissy. Sissy was the biggest. Pushy, loud, she sort of ran the show.

Pamela was very shy and fearful. And Peter was a young guy. He was sexually coming of age and a bit naughty.'

The lab was founded by neuroscientist Dr. John Lilly, who had published a quasi-sci-fi book in 1961 which proposed the theory that dolphins wanted to communicate with humans.

He designed the lab with the intentions to allow humans and dolphins to live in closer proximity.

 

Lovatt soon became consumed with the project, spending more and more time in the lab with the aquatic mammals.

Lilly had hoped to communicate with the creatures, and encourage them to make human-like sounds through their blow holes through daily lessons.

However, she felt like she wasn't making enough progress, deciding instead to focus on Peter alone, increasing the time spent one-on-one training him.

 

Still not satisfied, and feeling she was spending all her time with Peter at the facility anyway, Lovatt moved into the lab in 1965.

She and Dr. Lilly set up an indoor aquarium at Dolphin Point where she and Peter could live together, so she could work on teaching him English 24/7.

Peter and Lovatt co-existed in the lab six days of the week, and on the seventh day, the dolphin would go back to the enclosure with Pamela and Sissy.

 

The experiment lasted for three months, with Lovatt keeping detailed notes. In her recollections of the experiment, Lovatt described the dolphin being 'very, very interested' in her anatomy.

'If I was sitting here and my legs were in the water, he would come up and look at the back of my knee for a long time. He wanted to know how that thing worked and I was so charmed by it,' she recalled.

Lovatt had also started noticing the Peter, who was a sexually maturing adolescent dolphin, was becoming aroused frequently during their sessions.

 

She also noted that it was very difficult to try and teach a dolphin to talk when he is aroused.

Lovatt found that Peter 'would rub himself' on her knee, foot or hand - adding that she would allow him to do so.

'I wasn't uncomfortable — as long as it wasn't too rough,' she said assuredly.

 

'It was just easier to incorporate that and let it happen, it was very precious and very gentle, Peter was right there, he knew that I was right there,' she added.

Peter was being transported to the enclosure with the other dolphins to relieve his sexual urges at first, which was reportedly logistically quite difficult.

The loss of time and difficult of moving Peter led Lovatt to eventually begin relieving Peter of his urges herself.

 

'It would just become part of what was going on, like an itch, just get rid of that scratch and we would be done and move on,' she explained.

While Lovatt said nothing was sexual on her part, the story of her sexual encounters with Peter ended up overshadowing the experiment, amplified by an article in Hustler in the late 1970s.

The experiment came to an end in 1966, when Lilly, who had become increasingly interested in LSD and it's effects, started to dose himself and the dolphins, leading to the end of the lab's funding.

 

Sadly, Peter never recovered from Lovatt leaving the center, with Lilly calling Lovatt a few weeks after her departure to report that Peter died, suggesting he had killed himself by opening his blowhole underwater.

Locatt remained on St Thomas and ended up marrying the photographer that worked on the project. They share four daughters and converted the abandoned Dolphin Point laboratory into a home for their family.

The 2024 Annual Highlights of Results from the International Space Station is now available.

This new edition contains updated bibliometric analyses, a list of all the publications documented in fiscal year 2024, and synopses of the most recent and recognized scientific findings from investigations conducted on the space station.

These investigations are sponsored by NASA and all international partners – CSA (Canadian Space Agency), ESA (European Space Agency), JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), and the State Space Corporation Roscosmos (Roscosmos) – for the advancement of science, technology, and education.

 

Between Oct. 1, 2023, and Sept. 30, 2024, more than 350 publications were reported.

With approximately 40% of the research produced in collaboration between more than two countries and almost 80% of the high-impact studies published in the past seven years, station has continued to generate compelling and influential science above national and global standards since 2010.

The results achieved from station research provide insights that advance the commercialization of space and benefit humankind.

'Historic blow' to Sicilian mafia after more than 180 arrests by Italian police

A total of 1,200 officers were involved in the operation aimed at dismantling mafia clans in several districts of the capital Palermo.

Italian police have arrested 181 people in a crackdown on the Sicilian mafia.

 

Authorities launched a series of raids early on Tuesday, detaining suspected members of the mafia for alleged crimes including attempted murder, extortion, drug trafficking and more.

A total of 1,200 officers were involved in the operation aimed at dismantling mafia clans in several districts of the capital Palermo.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said several alleged mafia bosses were among those arrested and described the sting as a "very hard blow to Cosa Nostra". Over 50kg of drugs were also seized.

Palermo mayor Roberto Lagalla also praised the operation, said the arrests "dealt a historic blow to the mafia".

The large-scale sting suggests the organisation, an association of a number of groups, remains a significant criminal force despite setbacks in recent decades.

Police said Palermo's mafia families were still coordinating their activities across the city and its province like they used to in the heyday of Cosa Nostra.

They added that inner city families had regained authority compared to the years in which a faction from Corleone - a town outside Palermo - dominated, that was the birthplace of notorious bosses Toto Riina and Bernardo Provenzano.

But the Carabinieri police said the group had recently modernised, turning to encrypted smartphones.

This allowed the most influential mafia bosses to communicate with one another while avoiding police attention, officers said in a statement.

Such was the level of secrecy the method allowed, that one individual on the run for almost two years continued to "govern the district" - continue criminal activities in his area - communicating only using the mobiles.

The Carabinieri said the use of such devices was "systematic".

"We move forward with determination, because the mafia can and must be defeated," minister of defence Guido Crosetto said, congratulating police on the arrests.

Alongside Tuesday's arrests, additional warrants were also issued for 33 suspects who were already in prison for other crimes.

The Carabinieri also said Cosa Nostra continued to attract young people, documenting an example of one new recruit being given "mafia lessons" by an older associate.

"The young man was allegedly 'taken in charge' by a suspect who offered him specific instructions… as well as advising him on how to relate to the mafia leaders," police said.

The revelations made two years ago that Joe Biden’s family sought to cash in on communist China with millions in payments immediately raised concerns about what Beijing got in return. 'Tech genius' leader of vegan trans cult is arrested linked to six deaths across America

Jack 'Ziz' LaSota, the 'tech genius' leader of the ominous Bay Area vegan trans 'death cult' known as the 'Zizans,' was arrested after months on the run.

LaSota, 33, who uses she/her pronouns, was taken into custody on Sunday evening in Allegany County, Maryland.

She is being held on charges of trespassing on private property, obstructing a law enforcement officer and having a handgun in her vehicle, according to jail records seen by DailyMail.com.

Michelle Zajko, 32 a member of the cult, was also arrested on charges of trespassing, obstruction and hindering, resisting or interfering with an arrest and having a handgun on her person, records show.

Another member, Daniel Blank, 26, was also arrested. He faces charges of trespassing on private property and obstruction and hindering, records show.

The three have been on the run since 2023 after they were found by officers in Chester City, Pennsylvania conducting a search warrant after Zajko's parents, Rita and Richard Zajko, were found shot to death in their home on January 2 of that year, SFGate reported.

About a week after their deaths, LaSota, Zajko and Blank were each found in separate rooms of a hotel.

LaSota was charged with obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct and was eventually released on bail after five months behind bars. Zajko and Blank were not charged, and following LaSota's release, the three disappeared.

LaSota is allegedly linked to six deaths across the country, including the death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent killed in Vermont last month.

The agent, David Maland, 44, was shot in the neck around 3.15pm on January 20 in Newport while performing a traffic stop, according to authorities.

Teresa Youngblut was arrested following the violent shootout, which also left German national Felix Bauckholt, also known as Ophelia, dead. They are allegedly members of the 'Zizans' cult.

Youngblut was arrested and is currently facing federal firearms charges in connection to his death.

Zajko is also reportedly connected to Maland's death, as she allegedly purchased the handgun Youngblut used in the shootout, the Baltimore Banner reported.

Authorities in Vermont said that weapon was purchased by the same person who bought the firearm used in the murder of Zajko's parents years earlier, according to court records.

LaSota is also accused of being at the scene when a Vallejo, California landlord, who tried to evict her and members of the cult, was attacked by the group.

The landlord, Curtis Lind, was stabbed with a sword, but still managed to shoot and kill one of the cult members in self-defense, according to police.

Though she was believed to be at the scene, LaSota was never arrested. Two others were charged with murder and attempted murder in that case.

Despite surviving the initial incident involving the cult, Lind was killed on January 17 after he was found with his throat slashed, The Baltimore Banner reported.

Maximillian Snyder, 22, of Kirkland, Washington, has since been charged with his murder and is believed to be connected to the 'Zizans.'

The group has been described as an ideological group of 'rationalists', SF Chronicle reported. It is said to be named after LaSota, whose nickname is 'Ziz.'

She is a computer programmer who graduated from University of Alaska Fairbanks with a degree in computer engineering.

She interned at NASA and Oracle and, like many young tech entrepreneurs, 'moved to the Bay Area for proximity to the tech industry which I considered sort of my destiny,' she wrote in a 2019 blog post.

There, she had a stint at Google, took part in an apprenticeship by the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI) and the Center for Applied Rationality (CFAR) and became part of a rationalist movement in Berkeley, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Jessica Taylor, a former research fellow at the AI research non-profit MIRI previously told DailyMail.com she met LaSota around 2015 or 2016 at an MIRI or rationalist event.

'We talked about things like when people make commitments (like New Year's resolutions) that try to coerce or bind their future self and how this is confused and alternatives to it,' she said, adding that these are 'fairly normal ideas for self-help or rationality around CFAR.'

Taylor said it was only later that 'stuff got weird' and more extreme, pushing the belief that people have 'conflict between their two brain hemispheres, only one of which is good.'

LaSota began sharing these ideas and beliefs in a blog, titled Sinceriously.

Taylor said LaSota amassed something of a following through the blog, including her own friend Baukholt.

The lengthy blog posts, which ran from 2016 to 2019, included titles such as 'My Journey to the Dark Side,' 'Vampires and More Undeath,' 'Punching Evil,' 'Self-Blackmail' and 'Engineering and Hacking Your Mind.'

In one, LaSota described 2016 as the year she made a 'turn to the dark side.'

Ed Dwight sculpted a historic path to space

In 1961, Ed Dwight was a decorated Air Force pilot with a dream of traveling into space.

He was nominated as a candidate for NASA’s early astronaut corps in 1961, just as NASA’s Project Mercury crewed flights were beginning.

Much of the Mercury technology was crafted by McDonnell Corp., in St. Louis, and astronauts were carried into space on six flights between 1961 and ’63.

 

While qualified, NASA did not select Dwight for the astronaut class of 1963. The agency did not choose a Black astronaut until 1978, and a Black Astronaut would not venture into space until Guion Bluford made history in 1983.

Dwight, if chosen, would have been in the 1963 astronaut class that included Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins.

On July 16, 1969, as Apollo 11 roared into space, Dwight could only look at the moon and wonder “what if?”

 

Apollo 11 astronauts Niel Armstrong and Collins were he first men to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. Collins orbited the moon in the command module during the historic trip.

Dwight, an aeronautical engineer, Air Force captain and test pilot told BBC in England in 2019 that he received a letter from the Pentagon, authorized by President John F Kennedy, gauging his interest in becoming the first Black astronaut.

He thought it was a joke but later accepted the offer. Dwight would later call it “a political move.”

 

“The president went to NASA and said, ‘Would you train this guy?’ NASA says, ‘No, because you’ll destroy our program, you’ll destroy our tax base, and we’ll never get another dime from the public if you put a Black in this program right now.”

“The reputation of the first seven astronauts was that these guys were superheroes,” he said, referring to the famous Mercury Seven selected in 1958 and featured in the movie “The Right Stuff.”

“If you would’ve placed a Black or a woman in the middle of this mix too soon these guys would be ordinary people again in the eyes of the world, especially the tax-paying public. So, the president had to invent another space program – a military space program.”

 

Whether Dwight would have reached space through Kennedy’s military space program remains unknown. Kennedy was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963, one month after Dwight ended astronaut training.

“The day the president got killed, my life changed,” said Dwight. “22 November 1963 was literally the end of our project.”

A Kansas City, Kansas native, Dwight graduated from Kansas City Junior College with an engineering degree in 1953. He rose to the rank of captain in the Air Force before retiring.

He joined IBM and started a construction company before earning a master’s degree in sculpture in the late 1970s.

 

Just as with his military career and pursuit of being an astronaut, Dwight excelled as an artist. His works, which included sculptures of Black historical figures of Frederick Douglass, Denmark Vesey and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were nationally acclaimed.

His works are on display at the Quincy Jones Sculpture Park in Chicago, the Texas African American History Memorial in Austin, Texas, and the Tower of Freedom International Memorial to the Underground Railroad in Windsor, Ontario, Canada

In 2005, Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., commissioned Dwight to create the Soldiers’ Memorial Plaza, which was completed by 2007.

 

The 18-foot tall sculpture captures the transformation of soldiers from the 62nd and 65th regiments into students, the first at Lincoln.

While chances of his traveling to space seemed to face astronomical odds, his dream came true more than 60 years after his NASA racial snub.

On May 19, 2024, traveling in a Blue Origin spacecraft, Dwight finally realized his dream of space travel. He and five other passengers skimmed into space on a roughly 10-minute flight, which included moments of weightlessness.

 

“It was a life-changing experience,” he said, moments after leaving the capsule.

“I thought I really didn’t need this in my life. But now, I need it in my life. I am ecstatic.

“Every time I started a project; I’ve got it finished. And here this thing came along, and it was a great big mysterious question mark sitting there. And so, the tendency for human beings in a situation like that is to blow it off and say you don’t need it.”

Green Goblin Abruptly Cancels Planned Saudi Visit After Being Sidelined From US-Russia Talks

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Tuesday he is cancelling his scheduled state visit to Saudi Arabia following the conclusion of US-Russia talks there.

 

He's been on a Middle East diplomatic tour to gain support for his country now three years in to the Russia-Ukraine war, which took him to the UAE, Turkey, and Wednesday he was supposed to be in Saudi Arabia to meet with the kingdom's leadership. The Saudi trip had been planned before it was known that the US-Russia talks would take place.

 

"Zelensky CANCELLING trip to Saudi Arabia following US/Russia talks. Zelensky will now return to Kyiv from Ankara, Turkey," Fox News has reported. He now says he plans to visit in March. Zelensky is clearly trying to lash out at Washington.

 

Without doubt this is to signal his anger about being cut out of talks toward ending the Ukraine war. The Kremlin hailed Tuesday's four-and-half hour meeting in Riyadh, with Rubio leading the US side and Lavrov leading the Moscow delegation, as "successful". European officials were also noticeably absent from the meeting, which was hosted and mediated by the Saudi government.

 

Zelensky had issued a prior warning while in the UAE: "Ukraine will not accept. Ukraine knew nothing about this. And Ukraine regards any negotiations about Ukraine without Ukraine as having no results," he had said.

 

The US and Russian sides have vowed to continue the peace negotiations going, hopefully leading to a face-to-face meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump.

 

Secretary of State Marco Rubio after the Riyadh meeting issued a statement revealing an agreement for election to be held in Ukraine, which Zelensky certainly isn't going to like (and probably won't agree to), given also he just recently argued that martial law prevents this.

 

But Putin has said negotiations with Ukraine remain a non-starter so long as Zelensky refuses to hold elections. The Russian leader has said this makes him 'illegitimate' and thus he can't legally sign any peace terms.

Scientists try to expel space pioneer Elon Musk from the Royal Society after accusing him of 'disreputable' behaviour

Elon Musk could become the first member of Britain's top science club to be expelled in over 150 years after furious scientists initiated a crisis meeting over his 'disreputable' behaviour.

The world's richest man has been a Fellow of the Royal Society Scientific Institution since 2018 when he was awarded the honour in recognition for his work at ventures such as Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and the Boring Company.

 

However, the Royal Society is now set to meet next month to discuss the possibility of revoking Musk's membership after more than 2,700 scientists signed an open letter accusing the X owner of breaching the society's code of conduct.

The letter, penned by biologist Stephen Curry, cited Musk's apparent shift from scientific pursuits towards right-wing politics both in the US and abroad as the principal concern of other members.

Referencing Musk's perpetuation of conspiracy theories online, his trolling of Dr Anthony Fauci and his labelling of Labour MP Jess Phillips as a 'rape genocide apologist', Curry argued the South African billionaire had clearly breached the Royal Society's code of conduct.

 

Other issues of contention included Musk's involvement with the Donald Trump administration's new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and its alleged impact on the science community.

In the open letter, Curry stated: 'The situation is rendered more serious because Mr Musk now occupies a position within a Trump administration in the USA that has over the past several weeks engaged in an assault on scientific research in the US that has fallen foul of federal courts'.

 

Confirming the scheduling of an emergency meeting, a Royal Society spokesperson told Fortune that a debate will take place on March 3 over 'principles around public pronouncements and behaviours of Fellows'.

This open letter is not the first voicing of unease with Musk's Royal Society Fellowship.

 

Last November, Professor Dorothy Bishop, a University of Oxford psychologist, resigned from the scientific institution.

Protesting Musk's behaviour and involvement in the 2024 US Presidential election, Prof. Bishop said she refused to be associated with a group that calls Musk a member.

 

At the time, Prof. Bishop remarked that Musk was modelling himself on a 'Bond villain'.

'I just feel far more comfortable to be dissociated from an institution that continues to honour this disreputable man,' she added.

Her resignation was followed by that of Andrew Miller, a University of Edinburgh biologist, last week.

 

Miller cited the society's 'inability to take proportionate action on Elon Musk’s current promotion of disinformation and attacks on evidence-based policies and science advice' as cause for his resignation.

The Royal Society has previously boasted esteemed Fellows such as Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton and Charlers Darwin, with current celebrated members including Sir David Attenborough and Sir James Dyson.

Founded back in 1660, the Royal Society is the UK's oldest scientific academy.

 

The Royal Society has so far refrained from naming Musk as the Fellow whose membership they are meeting to discuss, instead stating that 'any issues raised in respect of individual Fellows are dealt with in strict confidence'.

If the scientific body were to follow through on other member's demands, Musk's removal could result in significant damage for the centuries-old society.

 

Any decision made is likely to be viewed as a political one, with the institution at risk of becoming embroiled in a public culture war, the likes of which have already subsumed many of Musk's recent critics.

One Fellow at the Royal Society spoke anonymously to The Times and expressed his support for Musk to hold on to his Fellowship despite his 'reprehensible behaviour'.

 

'I don’t like what Musk is doing — it’s reprehensible. But I also think he’s an astounding person in terms of what he has contributed to engineering.

'The society would be hypocritical if it singled out and censured one person for things they have said and done. You open the doors to charges of hypocrisy if you go down this road', they argued.

Elon Musk’s X social media firm announced it has launched legal cases in Germany against government “overreach” against the platform’s users’ privacy and freedom of expression.

 

Amid increasing scrutiny of the censorship regime in Germany in the wake of U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s speech at the Munich Security Conference, the Global Government Affairs division of X said on Monday that it has filed lawsuits in courts across the country to challenge the lawfulness of censorship demands.

 

In a statement, the American tech giant claimed that Germany subunits the “highest number of legal demands for user data to X within the European Union”.

 

The Global Government Affairs team went on to assert that 87 per cent of these demands came in the form of “speech-related offences”.

 

“X believes that these legal demands for user data are unlawful and has taken cases in both German federal and state courts challenging the lawfulness of the government’s overreach into our users’ privacy and freedom of expression,” they said.

 

Musk and his platform have increasingly become targets for the German political establishment for lifting many speech restrictions that came to define the end of the old Twitter management and for expressing his personal support for the anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the upcoming federal elections.

 

In the final town hall event before voters head to the polls on Sunday, Green party chancellor candidate and current finance minister, Robert Habeck, called for creating a European-based and controlled social media platform within the next two years.

 

Habeck claimed that “Chinese algorithms and Elon Musk’s right-wing radical fantasies” were impacting the “opinion formation” and thereby influencing “our democracy”. Thus, the Green politician called for increased regulation on Chinese and American tech companies in Germany.

 

Perhaps more concerningly for the Tesla chief, the likely next chancellor of Germany, Freidrich Merz, who now leads the formerly Merkel-run Christian Democratic Union, has suggested that American entrepreneur’s companies may face “legal” repercussions following this week’s elections.

EU wants Ukraine peace deal before ceasefire – Reuters

The bloc is reportedly ready to provide Kiev with security guarantees it needs to settle the conflict

 

The EU does not want Ukraine to announce a ceasefire with Russia before a comprehensive peace agreement is reached between Moscow and Kiev, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed European official. According to the report, the bloc considers an unconditional ceasefire “dangerous.”

 

Several EU members reportedly agreed on this stance during anemergency summit in Paris on Monday. The meeting wasarranged by French President Emmanuel Macronfollowing Washington’s announcement of an “immediate”start to negotiations on a Ukraine peace settlement, which began with bilateral US-Russia talks in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Tuesday. Neither Ukraine nor the EU were invited to attend. (The EU was told to stay out but Macron is freaked out because if the US finds out what he and they did, it will ignite a firestorm)

 

Macron’s summit was attended by the leaders of Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark, as well as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO chief Mark Rutte.

 

“We believe it is dangerous to conclude a ceasefire without a peace agreement at the same time,” an EU official who spoke on condition of anonymity told Reuters, summarizing the results of the gathering. He noted that the attendees expressed readiness to provide Ukraine with security guarantees it needs for starting the peace process, but did not clarify what these would entail. Kiev has previously demanded NATO membership as part of such guarantees, but Washington last week dismissed the notion, given that Moscow views Ukraine’s aspirations to join the military bloc as one of the key causes of the conflict.

 

“We are ready to provide security guarantees, with modalities to be examined with each party,depending on the level of American support,” (the want US money) the official stated.

 

The claims have been partly confirmed by Macron, who wrote in a post on X following the summit that “a strong and lasting peace” in Ukraine “must be accompanied by strong and credible security guarantees.” Macron urged the EU, the US, and Ukraine to “collaborate” in peace efforts, which he claimed was the “key” to settling the conflict. The Paris summit came a day after Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, made it clear that the EU would not be invited to take part in US-Russia peace efforts. Solar Orbiter ready for close encounter with Venus

The European Space Agency (ESA) is ready to guide the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter spacecraft through its closest encounter with Venus so far.

Today’s flyby will be the first to significantly ‘tilt’ the spacecraft’s orbit and allow it to see the Sun’s polar regions, which cannot be seen from Earth.

Studying the Sun’s poles will improve our understanding of solar activity, space weather, and the Sun-Earth connection.

 

Closer to Venus than ever before

Since launch in 2020, Solar Orbiter has carried out a number of gravity assists at Earth and Venus to gradually shrink its orbit and bring it closer to the Sun, but never before has it come as close to a planet as it will today, 18 February 2025.

At 21:48 CET, the spacecraft will pass within just 379 km of Venus. For comparison, astronauts aboard the International Space Station orbit Earth at an average altitude of 408 km.

 

“Getting so close to the planet allows us to use its gravity to significantly change the spacecraft’s orbit without using much fuel,” says ESA Flight Dynamics expert Julia Schwartz.

“The planets in our Solar System orbit the Sun in the same roughly flat plane. Today’s encounter with Venus will use the planet’s gravity to significantly ‘tilt’ Solar Orbiter’s orbit with respect to that plane.

This will grant Solar Orbiter a much better view of the Sun’s polar regions, which cannot be seen from within the plane.”

 

Future Venus flybys, such as the one in December 2026, will further tilt the spacecraft’s orbit and enable high-resolution imaging of the Sun’s entire polar regions.

From its unique orbit, the mission will help us refine our understanding of solar activity and improve our ability to safeguard technology on Earth from powerful solar outbursts and erratic space weather.

 

Cool under pressure

Passing so close to Venus presents a number of challenges for the team at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Germany.

Precise calculations and minor course corrections are necessary before and after the flyby to keep the spacecraft on track.

“The flyby has been carefully planned to get close enough to Venus to get the most out of the encounter while keeping the spacecraft safely above the planet’s atmosphere to avoid it experiencing drag,” says Sam Bammens from the Solar Orbiter Flight Control Team.

However, Solar Orbiter will still be bathed in the thermal radiation emitted by the planet as it passes.

 

“We expect Solar Orbiter to heat up significantly during the flyby. To prepare for this, the team carried out a detailed simulation of the heating effect of the Venus gravity assist manoeuvre.

Several parts of the spacecraft will experience a significant temperature increase, but all components will stay well within their design limits.”

“For a few of us in the control team, it is our first flyby. During the planning, we learned a lot about what it takes to navigate the Solar System, and we are very excited for tonight.”

 

Cloudy with a chance for science

During the manoeuvre, Solar Orbiter will continue to point its ‘front’ – its instruments and, more importantly, its heat shield – towards the Sun to keep the spacecraft safe.

That means it won’t be able to point any of its cameras towards Venus and its cloud tops during the flyby, but it is still an opportunity to gather some scientific data.

Unlike Earth, Venus lacks a global magnetic field to interact with the charged particles of the solar wind. However, a layer of its atmosphere known as the ionosphere interacts with the solar wind in unique ways.

 

Solar Orbiter’s Magnetometer and Radio and Plasma Waves sensors will be switched on as the spacecraft passes Venus to record the planet’s magnetic and plasma environment.

The data they collect will contribute to ongoing research on how the solar wind affects planetary atmospheres beyond Earth.

 

ESA at Venus

Solar Orbiter is not the only ESA mission visiting Venus this year. ESA’s Juice spacecraft, en route to Jupiter to explore its icy moons, will also fly past the planet in August.

Solar Orbiter and Juice will pass Venus just 194 days apart – that’s less than one day on Venus, which lasts 243 Earth days. The frequent visits highlight the planet’s important role as a waypoint for ESA's interplanetary voyagers.

 

However, while Solar Orbiter and Juice are making just brief visits to Earth’s neighbour, for some ESA missions, Venus is the final destination.

From arrival in 2006 until the end of the mission in 2014, ESA’s Venus Express studied the planet’s atmosphere and clouds in detail and mapped its surface temperature.

FROSTBURG, Md. (DC News Now) — Maryland State Police (MSP) said one person from Pennsylvania and two others from California were arrested in Frostburg for a slew of charges on Sunday.

 

MSP said troopers responded to the 10000 block of Piney Mountain Road and arrested three people: 34-year-old Jack Amadeus Lasota, of Berkeley, Calif., 32-year-old Michelle Jacqueline Zajko, of Media, Pa. and 26-year-old Daniel Arthur Blank, of Sacramento, Calif.

According to a report from the Associated Press, Lasota, and Zajko were associated with the “cultlike group known as the Zizians.” Lacosta is the apparent leader.

 

The group – made up of young, “highly intelligent computer scientists” who met online and had anarchist beliefs – is known for multiple murders near the Canadian border, Vermont, Pennsylvania and California, according to the report.

 

Of those murders include U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland who died during a shootout in Vermont on Jan. 20 with the cultlike group.

Russia and the US have been right not to invite the EU to talks in Saudi Arabia, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said. In a post on Facebook on Tuesday, the official said there should be “no place” for those who want the Ukraine conflict to continue in any initiatives aimed at paving the way towards peace.

 

Bilateral Russia-US negotiations kicked off in the Saudi capital Riyadh earlier on Tuesday. The talks, led by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are the first direct attempt by Moscow and Kiev to restore ties after nearly three years of animosity, and are expected to pave the way for negotiations on the settlement of the Ukraine conflict.

 

The talks have, however, sparked outrage in the EU, whose members have lamented that Washington failed to consult themprior to reestablishing dialogue with Moscow and did not invite them to the negotiating table.(They fail to understand Trump has all the records of Joe Bidan, and he knows exactly what they did)

 

“We, peace-loving Hungarians, have been waiting for this for three years!” Szijjarto, whose government is a longstanding critic of the West’s approach to the Ukraine conflict and a proponent of peace, wrote on Facebook.

 

“Pro-war Europeans are decrying they were not invited to sit at the table… but why should they be? The talks are about peace, they are no place for warmongers!” he added. Speaking to reporters ahead of US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia on Monday, Szijjarto expressed hope that they will “lead to peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.”

 

Many EU officials have voiced criticism of Washington’s unilateral peace effortsover the past few days. The process began with US President Donald Trump’s phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin last Wednesday, after which the US leader declared that Ukraine peace negotiations should start “immediately.”

 

Anger spiked further after Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, signaled that the bloc would not be at the table when the US and Russia discuss peace, prompting French President Emmanuel Macron to call for an emergency gathering of European leaders.

 

Macron’s summit took place in Paris on Monday, and was attended by the leaders of Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, as well as EU Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen and NATO chief Mark Rutte.

 

According to comments made by several attendees following the meeting, it focused on the potential deployment of European troops to Ukraine and the willingness of European NATO members to step up defense spending,but failed to yield any concrete decisions on both fronts.

 

German Chancellor OlafSchloz saidthose present agreed, however,that “there must be no division of security and responsibility between Europe and the US” on Ukraine. Macron stated after the meeting that lasting peace could only be achieved through collaboration across the EU, the US, and Ukraine.(They forgot Russia! This striking satellite image, taken from Google Maps in 2021, shows a bizarre, jet-black, triangular structure in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

At the time, the mysterious object, which was widely referred to as a "black hole," sparked wild rumors online. However, it was quickly revealed to be an uninhabited island covered with dense trees.

 

The screenshot was initially shared on Reddit and, despite being labeled as an island in the caption, accumulated a variety of speculative comments that were published by tabloid media sites at the time.

These unusual ideas included a deep pit under the planet and a top-secret military base that had been blurred out.

 

However, it was quickly confirmed that the dark patch was actually Vostok Island, one of the 33 landmasses that make up the Republic of Kiribati in the South Pacific, the BBC reported at the time.

The island, which is a coral atoll, has an area of just 0.1 square mile (0.25 square kilometer) and is located around 4,000 miles (6,000 km) east of Australia.

 

The virtually black color in the Google Maps image is the result of the island's densely populated Pisonia trees, which almost completely fill the island's interior.

These trees are dark green, but in such a high concentration, they look much darker from low Earth orbit, according to the BBC.

 

Pisonia trees are known to grow so closely to one another that they often prevent any other tree or plant species from taking root in between them because they block out so much light, according to the academic news site JSTOR Daily.

The dense foliage also lures a variety of seabirds, including boobies, noddies and frigatebirds, according to a 1971 survey.

These birds get covered in sticky seed pods and thus help disperse them to other islands.

 

In other parts of the world, some birds have been known to get so stuck with the Pisonia pods that they become entrapped and die, JSTOR Daily reported.

As a result, there are sometimes piles of bones beneath the trees.

 

Before being discovered by Russian explorers in 1820, Vostok Island had shown no sign of ever being inhabited by humans, according to a 1966 article in Pacific Islands Monthly, and it has not had any permanent residents since.

This is likely because there is no reliable source of fresh water on the island.

3D nanoprinting technique can transform ceramics for high-performance systems, from disease detection to space travel

The same material from which you drink your morning coffee could transform the way scientists detect disease, purify water, and insulate space shuttles thanks to an entirely new approach to ceramic manufacturing.

Published in Advanced Science, 3D-AJP is an aerosol jet 3D nanoprinting technique that allows for the fabrication of highly complex ceramic structures that—at just 10 micrometers (a fraction of the width of human hair)—are barely visible to the naked eye.

 

These 3D structures are made up of microscale features including pillars, spirals, and lattices that allow for controlled porosity, ultimately enabling advances in ceramic applications.

"It would be impossible to machine ceramic structures as small and as precise as these using traditional manufacturing methods," explained Rahul Panat, professor of mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and the lead author of the study. "They would shatter."

 

Ceramics are believed to be the key to emerging engineering systems because of their wear resistance, thermal stability, thermal insulation, high stiffness and biocompatibility.

While existing 3D printing techniques have opened doors for ceramics fabrication, oftentimes severe shrinkage and/or defects are observed during post-printing processing due to the removal of additives from the ink that were needed to support the material during printing.

With shrinkage ranging from 15–43%, it is challenging for fabricators to set printing parameters that would output the ideal part.

 

3D-AJP does not rely on additives in the ink and therefore sees only a 2–6% shrinkage rate, so manufacturers can feel confident that the structure they want is the structure they'll print.

To ensure this, the research team performed a detailed manufacturability study to identify the CAD programs needed to produce the final shape.

 

Additionally, the team, including postdoc Dr. Chunshan Hu, demonstrated 3D-AJP's unique ability to print two ceramic materials in one single structure, which allows for advanced applications.

"Using these structures, we can detect breast cancer markers, sepsis and other biomolecules from a blood sample in just 20 seconds," said Panat.

 

This application, which is an extension of past research in which Panat's group developed a metal biosensor to detect COVID-19 in just ten seconds, is advantageous, because compared to metal, ceramic sensors can be manufactured nearly five times faster.

Panat also cites the benefits of this technology in water purification and thermal insulation.

 

"In the presence of UV light and zinc oxide, chemicals can be degraded, so by creating a 3D structure with a higher surface area we can increase the speed and the effectiveness of water purification by four times," he said.

"Additionally, our ability to control the porosity of these structures, allows us to control and tailor thermal conductivity of structures such as the insulators used in space shuttles."

EU arms stockpiles empty – German defense contractor

Rheinmetall’s CEO has urged the bloc to ramp up weapons spendingamid the alleged Russia threat

 

The EU has depleted its arms stockpiles due to the Ukraine conflict, leaving it exposed to a potential Russian threat, Armin Papperger, the CEO of German arms manufacturing giant Rheinmetall, has stated.

 

The defense executive’s warning was voiced in an interview published by the Financial Times on Monday. It comes amid a renewed attempt at launching a US-Russia dialogue, with the sides on Tuesday holding their first meeting since the start of the Ukraine conflict.

 

Speaking to the FT on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Papperger, the head of one of the key Western firms supplying Kiev with military equipment, projected sustained high demand for arms in the region, even if peace talks lead to a Ukraine-Russia ceasefire.

 

At the same time, he noted that“The Europeans and the Ukrainians have nothing in their depots,”referring to low arms stockpiles among Ukraine’s NATO allies in the region.

 

The Rheinmetall chief went on to warn that “Even if the war [in Ukraine] stops — if we think that we have a very peaceful future, I think that’s wrong.”(it was always about arm manufacturers sales)

 

Despite a more than 30% increase in EU defense spending between 2021 and 2024, Papperger argued it remains insufficient to address current security challenges. Papperger criticized EU nations for under-investing in defense for decades, saying it was why they were excluded from Tuesday’s Riyadh talks. Neither Ukraine nor Washington’s European NATO allies were invited to participate in the Russia-US meeting, where an agreement was made to start the conflict settlement process.

 

The CEO’s remarks come as the US has signaled its intent to minimize American military involvement once a potential truce is reached, instead seeking to shift the financial and logistical burden of supporting Kiev onto regional allies.

Nebraska’s LB383, the Parental Rights in Social Media Act, would require social media companies to implement “reasonable age verification” to block minors from accessing platforms unless a parent provides consent. According to Unicameral Update, acceptable verification methods would include digital IDs and third-party age authentication services, though these entities would be required to delete personal data after verification.

 

Despite assurances about data deletion, these laws raise concerns about how much personal information users will have to provide just to access everyday online services. Under LB383, minors could still create social media accounts—but only if their parents first verify their own age and submit a signed consent form. Attorney General Mike Hilgers sees social media engagement as a calculated business model, arguing, “These are not on-accident algorithms that are just sort of inadvertently bringing in children. These are by design because some of the most lucrative customers you can find in this area are children.”

 

Critics of digital ID expansion warn that once identity checks become standard, they could be applied beyond social media, gradually eroding the ability to browse the internet freely and anonymously.

Zelensky demands 1.5 million-strong army

Europe must help Ukraine beef up its military until it joins NATO, the country’s leader has told the Munich Security Conference

 

Vladimir Zelensky has issued a new demand to Ukraine’s western backers, after the US said Kiev’s goal of NATO membership is “unrealistic.” Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Friday,Zelensky stated that Kiev needed an army of some 1.5 million soldiers.

 

If Ukraine is not a member of the US-led military bloc, then it must build its defense capabilities together with Western Europe, Zelensky warned. He went on to claim that NATO membership remained the best and “cheapest”option for Ukraine’s security.

 

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth this week described Kiev's hopes of NATO membership as “unrealistic,” a stance that was later reaffirmed by US President Donald Trump.

 

Zelensky insisted however “Until we are part of NATO, we need an army capable of protecting the country. This means NATO-standard weaponry and a sufficient number of trained Ukrainian troops. Based on calculations with our military leadership, that means an army of 1.5 million soldiers,” Zelensky said.

 

Russia has maintained that Ukraine’s aspirations to join the US-led military bloc are one of the conflict’s root causes. On Thursday, Trump blamed the hostilities on his predecessor Joe Biden’s support for Ukraine’s bid to join NATO.

 

The US President held a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, stating afterwards that Moscow and Washington would start immediate negotiations to end the fighting.

 

In January, Zelensky proposed deploying at least 200,000 European soldiers as peacekeepers in Ukraine to enforce any potential peace agreement with Russia. In a recent interview with American podcaster Lex Fridman, Zelensky said Ukraine had 980,000 military personnel in service.

 

Maintaining a 1.5 million-strong army would require a 50% increase in funding, Zelensky said, questioning who would finance it and how.

 

The Trump administration recently froze all foreign US aid, including for Ukraine, amid a government-wide spending review. Many EU and NATO members have failed to meet the bloc’s current defense spending target of 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

 

Snce the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, western countries have provided over $82 billion in aid to Ukraine per year, according to data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. A Friday press release by the think tank claims that the EU has given Kiev nearly $64 billion in military aid, while the US has provided some $66 billion.

Eight injured in Christiana Mall crash

 

Delaware State Police are investigating a crash Monday night, February 17, 2025, at the Christiana Mall Fashion Center that sent eight people to the hospital.

 

The wreck happened on Center Boulevard around 8 p.m. with several people reportedly trapped in the wreckage, and one vehicle on fire.

 

New Castle County paramedics said an approximately 80-year old woman was taken to Christiana Hospital in serious condition.

 

A 78-year old man, and a 37-year old woman, were listed in stable condition.

3D-printed 'hydrogels' could be future space radiation shields for astronaut trips to Mars

Spend a single day outside our planet's protective atmosphere and magnetic field, and you could be exposed to radiation levels equivalent to what you'd experience across a whole year back on Earth.

It's a risk astronauts face, and especially so during long trips. As such, finding methods to combat radiation exposure in space has long been on the minds of researchers working on technology for space travel.

 

New research suggests a novel solution: a material called "hydrogel" — the same technology used for the 'grow monster' toys — could shield space travelers from harmful radiation.

"The superabsorbent polymer that we are using can be processed using multiple different techniques, which is a rare and advantageous quality amongst polymers," Manon Minsart, a postdoctoral assistant at Ghent Universaid, said in a statement.

"Our method of choice is 3D printing, which allows us to create a hydrogel in almost any shape we want."

 

Hydrogels of course are already used in a range of consumer products. "The beauty of this project is that we are working with a well-known technology," Ghent researcher Lenny Van Daele said, in the same statement. "Hydrogels are found in many things we use every day, from contact lenses to diapers and sanitary products."

Daele says the research group drew on their previous experience with medical hydrogel applications, like using them for "soft implantable material to repair damaged tissues and organs."

 

While water can create a good shield for radiation, according to the researchers, SAPs could be even safer and more effective.

Rather than using free-flowing water as radiation protection, hydrogel soaks up the water, creating equal distribution and protection — and if the protective layer is punctured, the water won't leak out, which is important when working around sensitive electronics.

 

In addition to protecting astronauts, the European Space Agency (ESA) foresees further uses for hydrogel in space.

"The material could also potentially be applied to uncrewed missions — in radiation shields for spacecraft, or as water reservoirs once we have optimised the method of retrieving water from the hydrogel," added Malgorzata Holynska of ESA's Materials, Environments and Contamination Control Section, in the statement.

 

This new study builds on previous work where hydrogel was tested to make sure that it was safe to use in space conditions.

"There is a constant search for lightweight radiation protection materials," project lead Peter Dubruel said, in the statement.

"We are applying different techniques to shape the material into a 3D structure and scale up the production process, so that we can come a step closer to industrialisation."

Americans no longer want to fund Ukraine – RFK Jr.

TheUS has spent over $300 billion on aid to Kiev, according to President Donald Trump

The American people do not want to see their taxpayer dollars endlessly being spent on the Ukraine conflict, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has said.

 

To date, the US Congress has approved nearly $183 billion in aid for Kiev since the escalation of the conflict in 2022. US President Donald Trump has put the total at more than $300 billion.

 

Kennedy, who was confirmed as the new US health secretary last week, said it was time to cut the flow of funding, in a statement on X on Sunday.

 

”The American people will not accept hard-earned tax dollars fueling endless conflicts. We demand an end to these forever wars,” he wrote.

 

”It's time for peace! The perpetual funding is over!”

 

Since his inauguration last month, Trump and his administration have pivoted to an “America First” approach to foreign funding, amid a wider push to cut government spending. Most US aid abroad has been suspended while it is reviewed for alignment with the new administration’s goals.

 

Earlier this month, Trump insisted that Kiev repay Washington for the funding it has received to date, which the US leader claimed was “more than $300 billion.” Trump demanded the “equivalent of $500 billion worth of rare earths”from Ukraine in return.

 

According to The Economist,US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky an hour to signaway Ukraine’s mineral wealth in its entirety when they met last week, whichZelensky reportedly declined.

 

One former Ukrainian senior official referred to the agreement as “colonial,” according to AP.

 

Moscow and Washington agreed to establish a framework toward settling the Ukraine conflict during talks in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Tuesday. The bilateral meeting was the first between US and Russian diplomats since the West froze ties three years ago.

 

Ukrainian and EU officials were not invited to the discussions in Saudi Arabia, andZelensky has insisted that he will consider any decisions taken without his presence as null and void.

 

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who led the Russian delegation, noted the negotiations were productive, and that the US side “now has a clearer understanding of Russia’s position.”

Scientists accidentally discover Earth's inner core is less solid than expected

For a long time, scientists thought the Earth's inner core was a solid ball of metal, sort of like a planet within a planet that sits some 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers) below the surface.

However, researchers from the University of Southern Carolina (USC) now say they discovered — almost by accident — that the Earth's inner core may be much more malleable.

 

John Vidale, Dean's Professor of Earth Sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, who was the new study's principal investigator, said in a statement that the researchers "didn't set out to define the physical nature of the inner core."

Originally, the USC scientists were tracking how our planet's inner core speed of rotation is decreasing, because previous research found that the core is slowing down.

The method for charting this involves studying seismic waveform data from earthquakes.

 

The team used the data from 121 repeating earthquakes between 1991 and 2024; the chosen events happened across 42 different locations near the uninhabited South Sandwich Islands that are situated north of Antarctica.

The USC scientists were studying the waveforms when they came upon some surprising data that contradicted our previous understanding of Earth's inner core.

A dataset of waveforms held some uncharacteristic properties the team wasn't expecting to see.

 

"As I was analyzing multiple decades' worth of seismograms, one dataset of seismic waves curiously stood out from the rest," Vidale said.

"Later on, I’d realize I was staring at evidence the inner core is not solid."

 

Once Vidale's team improved the resolution technique, they found the seismic waveforms "represented additional physical activity of the inner core."

So, the data led them to believe that the inner core might be moving around a bit, rather than staying completely solid.

 

"What we ended up discovering is evidence that the near surface of Earth's inner core undergoes structural change," Vidale said.

According to the researchers, the structural change may relate to the inner core's slowing and could lead to a better understanding of the Earth's thermal and magnetic fields.

What's more, the change might have "minutely altered the length of a day."
