South Africa responds to envoy’s expulsion from US

Pretoria says it will continue to build a mutually beneficial relationship with Washington, regardless of the decision

 

South Africa has called the expulsion of its envoy to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, a “regrettable” move, but says it remains committed to engaging with Washington in order to maintain diplomatic relations.

 

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared Rasool persona non grata in a post on X on Friday, saying he is no longer welcome in the country. Rubio accused Rasool of being a “race-baiting politician” who hates America and its president, Donald Trump.

 

In response, South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, said he has taken note of the decision by the Trump administration.

 

“The Presidency urges all relevant and impacted stakeholders to maintain the established diplomatic decorum in their engagement with the matter. South Africa remains committed to building a mutually beneficial relationship with the United States,” Ramaphosa’s office said in a statement on Saturday.

 

The action against the diplomat came shortly after he accused Trump in a speech at a South African think tank webinar of leading a “supremacist assault on incumbency” through the ‘Make America Great Again’ campaign.

 

Tensions between Pretoria and Washington have escalated since Trump took office in January. The US president recently halted all federal funding to South Africa over a controversial land expropriation law, which the African country insists aims to address historical racial disparities in land ownership. Trump claims the legislation violates the rights of white South Africans, who continue to own the majority of farmland despite constituting only about 7% of the population.

 

The South African government has sought to hold talks with the Trump administration in order to clarify what it calls “misinformation” about the land policy. Last week, Semafor news agency reported that Ambassador Rasool has been unable to secure meetings with American officials.

 

On Monday, Ramaphosa dismissed claims that his government is being ignored by the White House.

 

“We cannot be blue-ticked because we are such an important player to the United States of America, as they are an important player to South Africa from a political point of view, from a trade point of view… We cannot be ignored,” he said in response to a question about the situation with Washington.

 

“A great deal of progress has been made by our ambassador in straightening out the path to ensure that there is meaningful engagement at the diplomatic level,” Ramaphosa said, acknowledging that the diplomat’s expulsion has caused a “hiccup.”

Not long after sparking outrage inside and outside the country by barring right-wing frontrunner Calin Georgescu from running in May’s presidential election, Romania has barred another populist from the contest, attributing the decision to the candidate's supposedly unacceptable policy stances and "making declarations "contrary to democratic values."

 

Romania's electoral commission on Saturday announced that Diana Sosoaca would be banned from competing for the country's presidency. In June 2022 Ramaphosa was accused of criminal conduct in a complaint filed by Arthur Fraser, a Zuma ally and previous head of the country’s State Security Agency.He alleged that Ramaphosa had covered up a theft in 2020 of at least $4 million in foreign money that had been kept in a couch at Phala Phala, Ramaphosa’s game farm, as well as had kidnapped and bribed the robbery suspects. The allegedly large amount of foreign currency and the manner in which it was stored raised questions regarding the origin of the money and whether it had been properly declared by Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa denied any wrongdoing in the matter. Regarding the theft, he said that a smaller amount of money had been stolen when he was not present at the farm and that he reported the theft once he was made aware of it. He asserted that the stolen money was from the sale of game and not any nefarious activity. Details provided by Ramaphosa and his staff surrounding the incident were murky, though, and at times appeared contradictory, and the appearance of impropriety grew. Multiple government agencies, including the Office of the Public Protector (national ombudsman) and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), opened investigations into the matter, which had become known as “Farmgate.”

The scandal was a blow to Ramaphosa’s anti-corruption reputation, and it had some calling for his resignation. In September 2022 a Section 89 investigation was opened in the National Assembly to determine whether impeachment proceedings against the president were warranted. The Section 89 Panel Report, submitted to the National Assembly on November 30, found that Ramaphosa might be guilty of having violated the country’s constitution in his actions surrounding the “Farmgate” scandal; he rejected the findings and proclaimed his innocence. The National Assembly met on December 13 to discuss the report’s findings and decide whether impeachment proceedings should be initiated against him. But the ANC, the largest party in the body, had instructed its members to reject the call for an impeachment inquiry, so it was no surprise when the majority of the National Assembly voted against it. Days later Ramaphosa was reelected president of the ANC at the party’s leadership conference.

In March 2023 the preliminary findings of the public protector’s investigation were leaked. They indicated that no evidence of wrongdoing by Ramaphosa had been found. The official investigation report, released on June 30, 2023, confirmed that Ramaphosa had been cleared of wrongdoing by the public protector. SARB’s investigation report, dated August 2023, focused on whether he had violated Exchange Control Regulation 6(1), which stipulated, “Every person resident in the Republic who becomes entitled to sell or to procure the sale of any foreign currency, shall within thirty days after becoming so entitled, make or cause to be made, a declaration in writing of such foreign currency to the Treasury or to an authorised dealer.”

The report included a statement from the identified buyer of the game, who referred to the money as a security deposit and said delivery of the animals had not occurred for reasons that included the COVID-19 pandemic. SARB found that Ramaphosa had not violated Exchange Control Regulation 6(1) because the money was stolen before the sale was finalized. SARB’s investigation and findings were derided by many, including members of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and other political parties, who described them with phrases such as “a whitewash,” “a cover-up,” and “unadulterated claptrap.”

Drone video: Crews battle massive fire at South End Charlotte nightclub

Crews battled a massive fire at a South End Charlotte nightclub on Saturday morning.

The fire department released a drone video on Saturday, March 15, which showed crews working to contain the fire at Morehead Social on East Morehead Street near South Boulevard.

That video can be seen below.

 

No civilians or firefighters were hurt. The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in property and content loss.

“Setbacks are not roadblocks. They are detours that lead to a better destination,” Morehead Social wrote on social media. “Stay tuned. We coming back stronger and bigger.”

Officials said determining the exact cause of the fire will be “challenging” for investigators due to the complete structural collapse.

 

What happened

Officials said crews responded to reports of heavy smoke along East Morehead Street at 7:47 a.m.

Four minutes later, firefighters arrived at the building on fire and began assuming command. Crews reported substantial smoke was coming from the basement.

Conditions reportedly worsened and an evacuation was sounded at 8:01 a.m. due to safety concerns. Three minutes later, officials said a roof collapse was imminent.

 

By 8:30 a.m., crews reported that “the structural integrity of the walls was also compromised.”

Additional resources were brought to help extinguish the fire by 8:42 a.m. as a third alarm was struck.

Officials said after an “intense” operation, the fire was controlled by 10:25 a.m.

 

“The dedication and quick action of our firefighters prevented what could have been a far worse outcome,” said Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson.

“Their ability to make decisive, tactical decisions under extreme conditions speaks to their training and professionalism. I’m incredibly proud of their commitment to protecting our city.”

Late on March 17th, Ukrainian long-range attack drones targeted a facility of the energy supply system of russia, located in the Astrakhan Region, approximately 900 km deep beyond the frontline.

According to the local governor Igor Babushkin, the UAVs were intercepted, but "debris caused fire" on the ground, Defense Express reports.

 

The fact of the drone attack on Astrakhan was also confirmed by Lieut. Andrii Kovalenko, Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, a Ukrainian state-run media agency.

As noticed by Liga.net, russia’s Defense Ministry claimed six Ukrainian drones were downed Sunday evening across Volgograd, Rostov, and Tula oblasts, but "conspicuously omitted" from the reporting the Astrakhan Region and Krasnodar Krai where residents heard multiple explosions.

 

Unofficial information suggests that the target was Gazprom's Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant, a facility spanning almost 4 sq. km.

While the details are yet being clarified, Defense Express reminds that the Astrakhan plant has previously suffered from Ukrainian drone attacks.

On February 3, it was lit on fire after a midnight onslaught of kamikaze drones.

 

The plant is one of the largest in russia, with an annual processing output of 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 3.5 million tons of gas condensate.

The end products include gasoline, diesel fuel, and more. The profits generated by this enterprise are used to fuel the russian war machine.

A South Korean military drone collided with a helicopter at an airfield on Monday, causing a fire that was extinguished in about 20 minutes without casualties.

This was reported by the South Korean Ministry of Defense, reports UNN.

 

The drone was manufactured in Israel, a large Heron reconnaissance drone, Yonhap news agency reported, citing the military.

The report said that during the accident in Yangju, north of Seoul, North Korea did not attempt to jam GPS signals.

 

In November last year, the same drone crashed in the same area, Yonhap reported.

Three Metro Atlanta men arrested in prison-smuggling drone scheme

WASHINGTON COUNTY, GA — Three Metro Atlanta men are facing multiple charges after authorities say they attempted to use a drone to smuggle contraband into Washington State Prison.

According to WSBTV, Washington County deputies arrested Emmarrion Murray, 20, of Jonesboro; Serpico Evans, 27, of East Point; and Alfonso Horton, 23, of Forest Park on March 7 at approximately 11:48 p.m. after receiving a call about suspicious activity in Davisboro.

 

According to investigators, the men were using a drone to smuggle promethazine into the prison.

Deputies seized the drone, its controller, which was connected to a cell phone, and several drawstring bags containing marijuana, tobacco, and promethazine.

 

The suspects now face multiple charges, including trading with inmates and conspiracy to commit a felony.

In addition, Evans faces an additional charge of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

 

Authorities say the trio allegedly attempted to sneak contraband behind bars—but now, they find themselves behind bars instead. The investigation remains ongoing.

In a swift demonstration of engineering collaboration, Saab, the Swedish Air Force, and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) have developed and evaluated the “Loke” concept in just 84 days.

This new system is designed to detect and counter hostile drones, addressing the growing need for effective counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) in modern defense strategies.

 

The increasing prevalence of drones has created a unique challenge for military forces, as conventional air defense systems are ill-suited for targeting small, low-flying, autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

These drones often operate in swarms, evade traditional detection methods, and present an economic dilemma, as using expensive military assets against low-cost drones is inefficient.

As drone technology evolves rapidly, military solutions must adapt to ensure effective defense capabilities.

 

The development of the “Loke” system started as an industry demonstration but quickly escalated into a focused, rapid effort to deliver a mobile and adaptable solution to Swedish Air Force combat units.

Typically, such projects would take much longer, but the collaboration between Saab, the Air Force, and FMV achieved the goal in just over two months.

 

The “Loke” system integrates several key components, including the Giraffe 1x radar for detection and classification, and a lightweight command and control system.

A Trackfire remote weapon station, typically used on naval vessels, is also part of the solution, providing flexible response capabilities.

This approach allows for the creation of a comprehensive, modular system that is adaptable to a variety of operational environments.

 

Carl-Johan Bergholm, Senior Vice President of Saab’s business area Surveillance, highlighted the innovative approach taken to integrate existing technologies with new features in record time.

The quick development process reflects a willingness to move away from traditional timelines and think creatively to meet emerging threats.

 

The system’s scalability ensures it can adapt to future developments in drone technology and be further enhanced with additional sensors and weapon systems.

It is also designed to function during redeployment, offering continuous protection.

 

Swedish Air Force Chief Major General Jonas Wikman emphasized the importance of agility in the face of new threats.

The project was led by the Air Warfare School (Luftstridsskolan), Command and Control Warfare School (Ledningsstridsskolan), and the Air Force Staff (Flygstaben), with support from the Ground Warfare School (Markstridsskolan). Norrbotten Air Wing (F 21) personnel also played a critical role, ensuring the system’s operational relevance.

The Trump administration deported a Lebanese doctor who was an assistant professor at Brown University’s medical school after investigators found “sympathetic photos and videos” of Hezbollah leaders on her phone, the Department of Justice said.

Dr. Rasha Alawieh, 34, was arrested after arriving at Boston’s Logan International Airport on Thursday. Her family claimed that officials provided no reason for her deportation, and they argued her rights were being violated because she had an active visa to live and work in the US.

The DOJ has since alleged that the Providence, Rhode Island, resident has an affinity for the Lebanon-based terror group, with pictures and videos of Hezbollah leaders found in the deleted items folder of her cellphone, Politico reported.

Alawieh also allegedly admitted that she attended a funeral for slain Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah last month while visiting family in Lebanon, according to the feds.

She claimed she attended the ceremony “from a religious perspective” and not a political one, according to Politico.

“CBP questioned Dr. Alawieh and determined that her true intentions in the United States could not be determined,” Assistant US Attorney Michael Sady wrote in a filing to the court on Monday.

Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Hilton Beckham said the burden of establishing proof of admissibility into the US falls on the immigrant, adding that the agency’s officers “adhere to strict protocols to identify and stop threats.”

The agency, however, did not immediately state what “threat” Alawieh posed, nor why she was chosen for removal, leading her family to file a lawsuit.

US District Judge Leo Sorokin had ordered the CBP to halt the Ivy League professor’s deportation until a court hearing on Monday, but the doctor was flown out of the country in a seemingly deliberate violation of the judge’s orders.

“The government shall respond to these serious allegations with a legal and factual response setting forth its version of events,” Sorokin, an Obama-era appointee, wrote in his order.

Romania Bars Another Nationalist From Presidential Race For Opposing EU, NATO Membership

 

Not long after sparking outrage inside and outside the country by barring right-wing frontrunner Calin Georgescu from running in May’s presidential election, Romania has barred another populist from the contest, attributing the decision to the candidate's supposedly unacceptable policy stances and "making declarations "contrary to democratic values."

 

Romania's electoral commission on Saturday announced that Diana Sosoaca would be banned from competing for the country's presidency. That news is troubling enough on its face, but the Central Election Bureau's rationale makes the development all the more chilling: Sosoaca is supposedly unfit for office because she has publicly voiced opposition to Romania's memberships in the European Union and NATO.

 

The court said Sosoaca's stances are disqualifying because EU and NATO memberships are explicitly acknowledged in Romania's constitution. However, constitutions can be changed via legal processes, and any rational champion of democratic principles should think political candidates should be free to advocate for changes.

 

Like Georgescu, Sosoaca has also been condemned for advocating for friendly relations with Russia. Last fall, she was banned from the November ballot on similar grounds. “I am proof that we do not live in a democracy," the morbidly obese Sosoaca said on Facebook this weekend as she promised to appeal the latest decision against her.

She is coordinating our Team of highly respected Scientists, Space Engineers, and various other “geniuses,” who has agreed to let our Astronauts come home long prior to the two week period originally approved by NASA. Janet was great. She said, “Let’s bring them home NOW, Sir!” — And I thanked her. This began when I asked Elon Musk to go up and get the abandoned Astronauts, because the Biden Administration was incapable of doing so. They shamefully forgot about the Astronauts, because they considered it to be a very embarrassing event for them – Another thing I inherited from that failed group of incompetents. The Christopher Nolan movie he compared to ‘Alien’: “You understand why they’re afraid”

Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan’s iconic first entry into the Batman universe, changed the landscape of superhero movies forever.

With his darker, grittier approach to the classic DC superhero, Nolan transformed him from a campy, straight-up-and-down superhero into a nuanced, mysterious, and ruthless antihero.

This approach was so effective that all successive comic book adaptations and superhero movies have tended towards this darker style. In fact, some see the franchise as a turning point in cinema.

 

And while the Nolan trilogy has been likened to crime dramas and psychological thrillers due to its complex characters, moral ambiguity and gritty details, the director himself sees it slightly differently.

For him, Batman Begins is more classic sci-fi horror than drama. Speaking to Empire, the filmmaker said, “I always liken Batman to the first Alien, where you just glimpse it.

So he’s frightening, threatening and elusive. You understand why they’re afraid of him.”

 

While Christian Bale’s terrifying and awesome portrayal of The Caped Crusader might not immediately bring to mind the Xenomorph alien from Ridley Scott’s 1980s classic, upon deeper reflection, it’s easy to see the similarities.

The horror and suspense of Alien isn’t really due to the ferocity or appearance of the Xenomorph, terrifying though it is, but to the subtle claustrophobia of the horror classic.

The whole movie takes place on one small spaceship and we only ever catch snatches of the relentless monster, which at times seems to disappear into the mechanisms of the ship and appear out of nowhere in the darkness.

 

All of this might sound eerily similar to fans of Nolan’s Batman. Trained by Ras Al Ghul and the League of Shadows, Bruce Wayne has mastered the dark, knowing how to disappear into it and become one with it.

This turns the familiar superhero into something terrifying rathe than cuddly and heroic.

The strength of Nolan’s Batman isn’t in his ability to save damsels and innocents, but in how much he is able to put proverbial the fear of god into criminals, gangsters and enemies.

 

And it’s exactly these criminals who Nolan wants to align the audience with, “The concept was always to present him from the criminal’s point of view… You understand why they’re afraid of him.”

And, undoubtedly, you are a little bit scared too. Take Batman’s first real appearance when he apprehends Falcone’s men: cronies disappear at random, lightbulbs explode, we get a glimpse of his animalistic costume, and he’s gone, his wings swoop, a shadow burgeons.

Nolan introduces his hero to the same beats of a villain or ghoul. In the same way that Scott introduces us to his Alien.

 

Then later in the movie, we get a full-frontal look at Batman when he uses Crane’s poison against him, and his transformation is even more horrifying than Scarecrow’s.

His whole face disappears into the mask, and his eyes and mouth turn black and ooze – drawing another comparison to the acid-drooling Xenomorph.

If you look for the signs, it’s easy to see the influence of the sci-fi classic on Nolan’s characterisation of his Batman, even if it’s not the first thing to spring to mind.

US officials have acknowledged that the Houthis act independently and are unlikely to take orders from Tehran

 

President Trump on Monday issued a new threat to Iran, saying that he will hold Tehran accountable for Houthi attacks. The warning came after US officials acknowledged that the Houthis, officially known as Ansar Allah, act independently from Iran and are unlikely to take orders from Tehran.

 

“Let nobody be fooled! The hundreds of attacks being made by Houthi, the sinister mobsters and thugs based in Yemen, who are hated by the Yemeni people, all emanate from, and are created by, IRAN. Any further attack or retaliation by the ‘Houthis’ will be met with great force, and there is no guarantee that that force will stop there,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

 

“Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of IRAN, and IRAN will be held responsible, and suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire!” the president added.

 

Over the weekend, when Trump ordered a major round of airstrikes on Yemen, which killed at least 53 people, US officials told The Washington Post that the Houthis were independent actors.

 

“US officials have said that while Iran has provided significant support to the Houthis, they see the group as an independent actor that might not necessarily respond to Tehran’s instructions to stand down its maritime attacks,” the Post reported.

 

The Houthis have an arsenal of drones and missiles that are similar to Iranian ones, but they are believed to be produced domestically in Yemen. “The Houthis also have established their own substantial, independent weapons production capability,” the Post report said.

 

Iran has always denied US allegations that it arms the Houthis, a position it reiterated when it rejected Trump’s earlier threats related to Yemen. The US airstrikes on Yemen over the weekend provoked Houthi attacks on the aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman, which US officials said were intercepted.

In a reversal of a Biden-era decision, President Donald Trump said that he's "not going to let" the FBI move out of Washington, D.C., to Maryland's Prince George's County.

 

In a Friday speech at the Department of Justice, Trump said FBI headquarters should not be moved "three hours away" to the "liberal state" of Maryland.

 

The federal agency's planned move would relocate it from the nation's capital to Greenbelt in the Old Line State. According to The Baltimore Banner, Greenbelt is not three hours away, as Trump suggested; the estimated drive time during rush hour on Friday was 50 minutes.

 

"We're going to stop it," Trump said in video shared by the outlet. "We're not going to let that happen. We're going to build another big FBI building right where it is, which would have been the right place, because the FBI and the DOJ have to be near each other."

 

The decision to situate the FBI's new headquarters in Greenbelt was made by the U.S. General Services Administration and it was not immediately clear how the Republican president would nix the Biden administration's site selection.

 

Maryland's congressional delegation has reportedly spent years lobbying to draw the FBI from the Beltway to Greenbelt, and in a joint statement with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore they said they plan to continue working toward that end.

 

In their statement, Maryland's top Democrats and Moore said that Greenbelt was chosen "based on the fact that it is the best site and it offers the lowest price and the best value to the taxpayers."

 

"What's more, it ensures that the FBI can move to a facility that will finally meet its mission and security needs as soon as possible," the statement added.

 

News of Trump scuttling the FBI's planned move to Maryland spread quickly, and state lawmakers slammed the president's pronouncement.

 

"He's under some illusion that he can waltz into town and just change the law," state Del. Jazz Lewis, a Prince George's County Democrat, told the Banner.

 

Lewis told the outlet that Trump's remark about Maryland being a "liberal state" shows the decision is a partisan one.

 

State Del. Adrian Boafo, also a Democrat, posted on X that Trump is once again "trying to harm Marylanders."

 

"Not on our watch," Boafo wrote. "I have confidence in Team Maryland to fight back. There was a deal on the table, and Trump now is reneging. Shame. On. Him."

There’s no sugarcoating it—global debt is spiraling out of control. We’re staring at a staggering $300 trillion debt load, which is over 349% of the world’s GDP. US, Israel see Syria as possible home for relocated Gazans, says report

Israel and the United States are interested in resettling Gazans in Syria, CBS News reported on Monday, citing “three sources familiar with the effort.”

 

The report came as Israel is working quietly to advance a controversial plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, in which Gaza’s more than 2 million people would be permanently sent elsewhere.

 

He has proposed that the US take ownership of the war-torn territory, oversee a lengthy cleanup process and develop it as a real estate project. Analysts and observers have said the ambitious plan is improbable, and the US’s Arab allies have rejected any displacement of the Palestinians from the Strip.

 

One source said that the White House reached out to Syria’s new government through a third party. Another source “from the region” told CBS that Damascus has been approached with the idea, but a senior Syrian official said the country is not aware of any such outreach.

Taking $200 Out of an ATM Should Not Trigger Federal Financial Surveillance

 

No, not even if you do it in a county that borders Mexico.

 

One of President Donald Trump's Day 1 executive orders designated "certain international cartels" as "foreign terrorist organizations," a classification that according to the State Department "play[s] a critical role in our fight against terrorism and [is] an effective means of curtailing support for terrorist activities and pressuring groups to get out of the terrorism business."

 

To that end, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) announced a new rule cracking down on cash transactions this week, but only in certain geographical regions. No matter the administration's intent to target cartels, the rule will expand government surveillance of its citizens.

 

FinCEN "issued a Geographic Targeting Order (GTO) to further combat the illicit activities and money laundering of Mexico-based cartels and other criminal actors along the southwest border of the United States," according to the announcement. "The GTO requires all money services businesses (MSBs) located in 30 ZIP codes across California and Texas near the southwest border to file Currency Transaction Reports (CTRs) with FinCEN at a $200 threshold, in connection with cash transactions."

 

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the change "underscores our deep concern with the significant risk to the U.S. financial system of the cartels, drug traffickers, and other criminal actors along the Southwest border."

 

The order lists all 30 ZIP codes in counties that each abut the U.S.–Mexico border: San Diego and Imperial Counties in California; and Cameron, El Paso, Hidalgo, Maverick, and Webb Counties in Texas. California's are the state's only two border counties, but the five in Texas encompass only a small portion of the state's total southern border. It's not clear why these seven counties were chosen out of the 44 total border counties, including any in Arizona or New Mexico.

 

Federal law requires banks, as well as businesses that provide services like check cashing or currency exchange, to fill out CTRs as a means of protecting against illegal activity like money laundering. Financial transactions totaling at least $10,000 in cash per day—including deposits, withdrawals, or a combination—require a CTR, where the institution must collect and record personal identifying information from the client, like a Social Security or tax ID number. The reports are then sent to FinCEN. (CTRs are different from suspicious activity reports, which are only triggered when a financial institution actively suspects the customer might be doing something illegal.)

 

The rule remains in effect in the rest of the country, but in those seven border counties, FinCEN has dropped the reporting threshold from $10,000 to $200. While ATM transactions don't often qualify since they typically have a much lower withdrawal limit, they are technically also subject to the CTR threshold—meaning a $200 cash withdrawal in one of seven counties could soon make one subject to a federal financial report.

 

"More than one million Americans are about to face a new level of financial surveillance," writes Nicholas Anthony, a policy analyst at the Cato Institute. "Financial surveillance in the United States has long needed reform, but this move is in the wrong direction."

 

Anthony says rather than lowering the threshold, the $10,000 baseline is overdue to be raised.

Trump's threat against EU wine and spirits has caused dismay among European producers who rely on exports, including French cognac makers already hit with tariffs by Beijing in a separate row over EU duties on Chinese electric cars.

 

Bayrou, who met representatives of the cognac industry on Friday, said he hoped talks with Washington and Beijing would resolve the tariff dispute.

 

The EU's first round of counter-tariffs against U.S. goods including bourbon is due to take effect on April 1. Bayrou, meanwhile, is expected to visit China to discuss the cognac issue but no dates have been announced.

Hunter Biden asked Vera to toss the case last week because of financial struggles due to dried up book sales and art sales starting in late 2023, when he was indicted on federal tax charges and the subject of a high-profile impeachment investigation by House Republicans. The loss of income also coincided with the collapse of Joe Biden’s political career last summer due to his advanced age and evidently declining mental faculties.

 

Last year, Biden’s art dealer Georges Berges testified before congressional investigators about how he ended his contract with Biden in September 2023 for business and political reasons. Berges said Biden sold approximately $1.5 million worth of art, $875,000 of which was purchased by his friend and financial benefactor Kevin Morris, a wealthy entertainment lawyer. Morris confirmed the art purchases when he testified before congress, and his lawyer subsequently disclosed to lawmakers $6.5 million of financial assistance Morris gave to Biden in the form of loan.

 

“While I believe in the merits of this case, and, indeed, note that Defendant Garrett Ziegler admitted to hacking my iCloud in multiple public statements, I am requesting to dismiss this action because I do not have the financial resources to continue litigating this case,” Biden said.

 

Hunter Biden disclosed that he sold 1,100 copies of his memoir, Beautiful Things, and one piece of art for $36,000 since late 2023. In the prior six months, Biden said he sold 36 pieces of art at an average of $54, 481 and 3,161 copies of his book.

Saudi-led project clears 484,949 mines, explosive devices in Yemen

 

A Saudi-led humanitarian initiative in Yemen has seen a milestone 484,949 land mines and unexploded ordnance cleared since the start of the project in 2018, according to a recent report.

 

These include 323,793 items of unexploded ordnance, 146,207 anti-tank mines, 8,200 improvised explosive devices, and 6,749 anti-personnel mines, according to Ousama Al-Gosaibi, the project’s managing director.

 

Project Masam, overseen by the Kingdom’s aid agency KSrelief, continues to remove deadly devices laid in the war-torn country by the Houthis.

 

Last week, the project’s special teams destroyed 515 items of unexploded ordnance, 25 anti-tank mines, five anti-personnel mines, and three improvised explosive devices.

 

Explosives planted indiscriminately by the Houthis across Yemen pose a threat to civilians, including children, women, and the elderly.

 

Project Masam is one of several initiatives undertaken by Saudi Arabia on the orders of King Salman to help the Yemeni people, clearing routes for humanitarian aid to reach the country’s citizens.

 

Demining operations took place in Marib, Aden, Jouf, Shabwa, Taiz, Hodeidah, Lahij, Sanaa, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale, and Saada.

 

The initiative trains local demining engineers and provides them with modern equipment. It also offers support to Yemenis injured by the devices.

 

About 5 million people have been forced to flee their homes since the start of the conflict in Yemen, many of them displaced by the presence of land mines.

 

Masam teams are tasked with clearing villages, roads, and schools to facilitate the safe movement of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The AJC said Mr Martin had accused Israel of committing war crimes, pursuing "collective punishment of the Palestinian people," as well as using "starvation as a weapon of war".

 

The group said that Mr Baker explained that these statements are "contributing to antisemitism facing Ireland's Jews" and urged him to pull back from its engagement with the ICJ.

 

The ACJ said if such action and statements continue, it will advocate for the US government to "take serious action in response".

tom cotton Nominates Mitch McConnell for Leader After Vote to Postpone Election Fails

 

Sen. tom cotton (R-AR) nominated Sen. Mitch McConnell for reelection as GOP leader after a motion to postpone the leadership election was quashed during a Wednesday meeting among members of the conference.

 

The motion to postpone the Senate leadership election failed by a reported vote count of 32-16. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) put forward the motion, which Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) supported.

 

The election is still scheduled to proceed Wednesday. After the motion to delay was squashed, cotton and Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) nominated McConnell for reelection, according to NBC News.

 

McConnell is pitted against challenger Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who said he is running against McConnell to upend the status quo. Scott was reportedly nominated by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI).

 

"If you simply want to stick with the status quo, don't vote for me," Scott stated. "Republican voters expect and deserve to know our plan to promote and advance conservative values… That is why I am running to be Republican Leader."

 

Hours later, McConnell stated he had the votes to be reelected. If McConnell is reelected, he would be the longest-serving Senate party leader in history.

 

The vote is expected to be held Wednesday afternoon by a secret ballot and behind closed doors. Scott needs to win a simple majority of GOP senators.

Betar, the international far-right pro-Israel group that took credit for the Department of Homeland Security’s arrest of former Columbia University graduate student and permanent U.S. resident Mahmoud Khalil for protesting the annihilation of Gaza, claimed this week that it has sent “thousands of names” of Palestine defenders to Trump administration officials for possible deportation.

 

“Jihadis have no place in civilized nations,” Betar said on social media Friday following the publication of a Guardian article on the extremist group’s activities.

 

Earlier this week, Betar said: “We told you we have been working on deportations and will continue to do so. Expect naturalized citizens to start being picked up within the month. You heard it here first. Those who support jihad and intifada and originate in terrorist states will be sent back to those lands.”

 

Betar has been gloating about last week’s arrest of Khalil, the lead negotiator for the group Columbia University Apartheid Divest during the April 2024 Gaza Solidarity Encampment.

 

On Thursday, immigration officers arrested another Columbia Gaza protester, Leqaa Kordia – a Palestinian from the illegally occupied West Bank – for allegedly overstaying her expired student visa. Kordia was also arrested last April during one of the Columbia campus protests against the Gaza onslaught.

 

On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian doctoral student at Columbia whose visa was revoked on March 5 for alleged involvement “in activities supporting” Hamas – the Palestinian resistance group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government – used the Customs and Border Protection’s self-deportation app and, according to media reports, has left the country.

 

Khalil and Kordia’s arrests come as the Trump administration targets Columbia and other schools over pro-Palestinian protests under the guise of combating antisemitism, despite the Ivy League university’s violent crackdown on demonstrations and revocation of degrees from some pro-Palestine activists.

 

U.S. President Donald Trump, who in January signed an executive order authorizing the deportation of noncitizen students and others who took part in protests against Israel’s war on Gaza, called Khalil’s detention “the first arrest of many to come.”

 

The Department of Justice announced Friday that it is investigating whether pro-Palestinian demonstrators at the school violated federal anti-terrorism laws. This followed Thursday’s search of two Columbia dorm rooms by DHS agents and the cancellation earlier this month of $400 million worth of funding and contracts for Columbia because the Trump administration says university officials haven’t done enough to tackle alleged antisemitism on campus.

CHEYENNE — Former U.S. Sen. Al Simpson, R-Wyo., famous for his quick wit and ability to work across the aisle in Congress, died Friday morning. He was 93 years old.

He died in Cody, surrounded by family and friends, after struggling to recover from a broken hip in December. Family members said his recovery was hindered by complications from frostbite to his left foot approximately five years ago. As a result, Simpson’s left leg was amputated below the knee as an unavoidable medical necessity.

Simpson made a name for himself in Congress for his folksy demeanor and saying what’s on his mind without any fear.

Our World Data reports that in 2021, 6.08 million more people died than in 2020. Several articles claim that COVID-19 vaccination in 2021 saved 14 million lives. Their proposition that COVID-19 vaccination saved lives was not proved by statistical data. These articles’ calculations evaluate how many people would die without the vaccination. But it was never proved that vaccination saved lives. Statistical data confirm that the mortality of the vaccinated part of the population in 2021 was 14.5% higher than the mortality of the unvaccinated part of the population. The idea of saving lives with COVID-19 vaccination contradicts statistical data.

 

Here are the key points of this study:

 

6.08 million more deaths occurred in 2021 than in 2020, despite widespread COVID-19 vaccination.

Mortality rate among vaccinated individuals was 14.5% higher than among unvaccinated individuals.

If vaccines saved 14 million lives in 2021 as Watson et al claims, total deaths should have decreased, but instead, deaths increased.

Studies claiming vaccines saved lives rely on theoretical models, not direct statistical comparisons of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated mortality rates.

Judge declines to force FEMA to release funds to upgrade US emergency alert system.

 

A federal judge on Monday declined to force the Trump administration to immediately reimburse dozens of public broadcasting stations for upgrades to the nation's emergency alert system.

 

The nonprofit Corporation for Public Broadcasting sued the Federal Emergency Management Agency last Thursday, claiming the agency had unlawfully held up nearly $2 million in grant money for modernizing the alert system. The lawsuit says the delay in reimbursements is hampering the ability of federal, state and local authorities to issue real-time emergency alerts.
