US Will Keep Hitting Houthis Until Shipping Attacks Stop, Hegseth Says

The United States will keep attacking Yemen's Houthis until they end attacks on shipping, the U.S. defense secretary said on Sunday, as the Iran-aligned group signaled it could escalate in response to deadly U.S. strikes the day before.

The airstrikes, which killed at least 31 people, are the biggest U.S. military operation in the Middle East since President Donald Trump took office in January. One U.S. official told Reuters the campaign might continue for weeks.

The Houthi movement's political bureau described the attacks as a "war crime" and said Houthi forces were ready to "meet escalation with escalation," while Moscow urged Washington to cease the strikes.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Fox News: "The minute the Houthis say we'll stop shooting at your ships, we'll stop shooting at your drones, this campaign will end, but until then it will be unrelenting."

"This is about stopping the shooting at assets … in that critical waterway, to reopen freedom of navigation, which is a core national interest of the United States, and Iran has been enabling the Houthis for far too long," he said. "They better back off."

Kiev vows to continue offensive in Russia’s Kursk region

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered Ukraine’s encircled troops in the area the chance to surrender and thus preserve their lives

Ukraine’s forces in Russia’s Kursk Region will continue their operations, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga stated in an interview on Saturday, despite the troops being largely encircled, according to both Moscow and Washington.

Speaking with Japan’s NHK, Sibiga claimed that Kiev had achieved its main objectives in the offensive but seeshaving a continued presence on Russian territory as providing leverage in future peace negotiations.

Ukraine launched its incursion across the internationally recognized Russian border into Kursk Region last August, capturing the town of Sudzha and numerous villages. However, the Russian military quickly halted the advance and has since been reclaiming lost ground. Russian General Staff Chief ValeryGerasimov said on Wednesday that 86% of the land previously occupied by Ukrainian forceshad been retaken, leaving the remaining troops “encircled” and “isolated.”

“As officially announced by General [Aleksandr] Syrsky, we are continuing the operation in Kursk Region and will continue to do so,” Sibiga stated.

“The operation in Kursk Region isan important factor and a key point of discussion in future peace negotiations,”he added.

The fate of the Ukrainian troops fighting in Kursk was addressed by Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, he said that he was open to the idea of a 30-day ceasefire proposed by Washington and Kiev at their recent talks in Saudi Arabia but stressed that the issue of the incursion forces, among others, must be resolved before Moscow could agree.

On Friday,US President Donald Trumpacknowledged that “thousands of Ukrainian troops are completely surrounded by the Russian military and in a very bad and vulnerable position” in Kursk Region andurged Moscow to “spare” their lives. In response,Putin offered the servicemen guaranteed safetyand merciful treatment if they surrender.

The presidents ofRussia and the US might have a call this week to agree on a ceasefirein the Ukraine conflict, Steve Witkoff, a special envoy to US President Donald Trump, has said. Speaking on CNN on Sunday, Witkoff said he had a “positive” meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin thatlasted between three and four hours.

Witkoff arrived in Moscow on Thursday to present Putin with the details of the truce proposal agreed by American and Ukrainian officials.

FDA Issues Flu Vaccine Recommendations After Canceling Routine Meeting With Advisers

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued recommendations to vaccine makers on Thursday regarding the virus strains to be used in the 2025–26 influenza vaccines, after canceling a meeting of its vaccine advisers last month that had been scheduled for March 13.

The strain composition recommendations for flu shots usually involve input from the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC), but this year, the agency excluded its advisers from the decision-making process.

Instead, the FDA held a closed session with experts from its Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, along with officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Defense, to review U.S. and global surveillance data on currently circulating flu viruses.

That interagency meeting was held on the same day that the VRBPAC was originally scheduled to meet. In a statement, the FDA said it does not expect any impact on the timing or availability of vaccines for the public.

The regulator recommended using the trivalent formulation of egg-based influenza vaccines for the next flu season, containing two influenza A subtype viruses and one influenza type B virus.

The FDA stated that it has informed vaccine manufacturers of its recommendations and expected “an adequate and diverse supply of approved trivalent seasonal influenza vaccines” for the upcoming influenza season, which covers the fall and winter of each year.

The reason for the cancelation of the VRBPAC meeting remains unclear. The FDA did not offer an explanation.

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)—which represents over 13,000 physicians, scientists, and public health experts—had urged the FDA to reschedule the meeting, saying that its cancelation could endanger public health as the nation faces its worst flu season in more than a decade.

“Cancelling this meeting means vaccine makers may not have the vital information and time they need to produce and distribute targeted vaccines before the next flu season,” IDSA President Tina Tan said in a Feb. 27 statement.

Seasonal influenza activity has remained high in the United States, with at least 40 million illnesses recorded so far, according to the CDC. Of these, 520,000 patients were hospitalized, and 22,000 have died from flu as of March this year.

The cancelation of the FDA’s advisory committee meeting came after President Donald Trump’s nominee for health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy, was confirmed by the Senate on Feb. 13.

EU parliament rocked by corruption investigation linked to China’s Huawei

Belgian authorities announce arrests of several people in connection with alleged bribery within the parliament.

Police have arrested several people as part of a corruption probe targeting the European Parliament and Chinese tech company Huawei, Belgian authorities have said.

The suspects, who are alleged to have been involved in “active corruption” within the European Parliament to benefit Huawei, were arrested following searches at 21 premises in Belgium and Portugal, Belgium’s Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Thursday.

“The corruption is said to have been practised regularly and very discreetly from 2021 to the present day, under the guise of commercial lobbying and taking various forms, such as remuneration for taking political positions or excessive gifts such as food and travel expenses or regular invitations to football matches,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Investigators believe the illicit payments may have been “mixed up” in financial flows linked to conference expenses in order to disguise their true purpose, according to prosecutors.

“From this point of view, the investigation also aims to detect any evidence of money laundering, as the case may be,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Following the raids, a judge overseeing the case ordered seals to be placed on the offices of two parliamentary assistants at the EU parliament headquarters in France’s Strasbourg, prosecutors added.

Prosecutors said they could not disclose further details, including the identities of the suspects, out of consideration for the presumption of innocence and the integrity of the investigation.

Huawei said in a statement that it took the allegations seriously and would communicate with authorities to understand the situation.

“Huawei has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption or other wrongdoing, and we are committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations at all times,” a spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for the EU parliament said it had received a request for cooperation from the Belgian authorities to assist the investigation, which it would “swiftly and fully honour.”

The probe comes less than three years after several EU lawmakers and aides were embroiled in an alleged bribery scandal involving officials from Qatar and Morocco.

Five current and former MEPs – Greece’s Eva Kaili; Italy’s Pier Antonio Panzeri and Andrea Cozzolino; and Belgium’s Marc Tarabella and Marie Arena – have been charged in the case.

Panzeri cut a plea deal with prosecutors in 2023, in which he acknowledged his involvement in corruption.

None of the other four have been convicted.

The Qatari and Moroccan governments have denied any wrongdoing in the case.

Israel is Denying Doctors and International Aid Workers Entry to Gaza at Unprecedented Rates

Amid a total blockade of Gaza, Israel imposed sweeping new restrictions on international aid groups

The Israeli military is denying international health care and humanitarian workers entry into Gaza at unprecedented rates, according to multiple doctors and aid workers who spoke to Drop Site News. Since early February, shortly after the Gaza “ceasefire” went into effect, as many as half of doctors with preliminary approval through the World Health Organization to enter Gaza found out the night before their scheduled entry that they were rejected.

Nearly all of the doctors being denied entry over the past six weeks have been on relief missions to Gaza within the past 17 months and have previously been cleared by the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the branch of the Israeli military that oversees the West Bank and Gaza.

“This spike in rejections, without a doubt, we've never seen anything like this,” said Dr. Nabeel Rana, a vascular surgeon who volunteered in Gaza on two separate missions in 2024 and was denied entry for the first time on February 24. “It seems to be since the ceasefire went through—since the beginning of February—is when it's become very, very pronounced.”

Meanwhile, the Israeli government established an inter-ministerial team in December, led by the Director General of the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, to oversee the registration of international NGOs working with Palestinians. The new registration procedures mean that the Israeli government can bar any organizations from entering Gaza until they have gone through its approval process. “This could completely upend the humanitarian system as it currently stands. We were supposed to have a team enter on 18 March and were told to ‘hold’ until the new terms were negotiated,” said Dorotea Gucciardo, the director of Development at Glia, an international humanitarian organization that operates in Gaza. The newly-formed team’s guidelines include denying registration for political reasons, such as “denying Israel’s status as a Jewish and democratic state,” or “supporting boycotts, denying October 7, supporting resistance efforts, delegitimization campaigns, or legal proceedings against Israeli security personnel.”

“This policy is using bureaucracy as another weapon in Israel's genocidal campaign against Palestinians,” said Gucciardo, who led two medical missions to Gaza in 2024. “It's unprecedented, and represents a dangerous escalation in the restrictions placed on humanitarian organizations working in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, which remains under total blockade. What we are witnessing in the West is a group of leaders who have been blackmailed, bribed and brainwashed all their lives into believing in a certain paradigm. Talk about switching to cryptocurrency is also nonsense because it is not real, it is just numbers on computers controlled by the alphabet agencies.

Unfortunately, it looks like the whole system will have to collapse before it is possible to start rebuilding.
