Social anxiety disorder-associated gut microbiota increases social fear

 

Significance

Understanding the biological basis of social anxiety disorder (SAD), one of the most disabling of the anxiety disorders, will allow for novel treatment strategies to be developed. Here, we show that gut microbiota may be such a target. Mice that received SAD patient microbiota had a specific heightened sensitivity to social fear without affecting other behaviours tested. This distinct deficit in normal social fear responses was coupled with changes in immunity and the brain.

Abstract

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a crippling psychiatric disorder characterized by intense fear or anxiety in social situations and their avoidance.

However, the underlying biology of SAD is unclear and better treatments are needed. Recently, the gut microbiota has emerged as a key regulator of both brain and behaviour, especially those related to social function.

Moreover, increasing data supports a role for immune function and oxytocin signalling in social responses.

To investigate whether the gut microbiota plays a causal role in modulating behaviours relevant to SAD, we transplanted the microbiota from SAD patients, which was identified by 16S rRNA sequencing to be of a differential composition compared to healthy controls, to mice.

Although the mice that received the SAD microbiota had normal behaviours across a battery of tests designed to assess depression and general anxiety-like behaviours,they had a specific heightened sensitivity to social fear, a model of SAD.

This distinct heightened social fear response was coupled with changes in central and peripheral immune function and oxytocin expression in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis.

This work demonstrates an interkingdom basis for social fear responses and posits the microbiome as a potential therapeutic target for SAD.

Putin congratulates Xi on his birthday

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit China to attend events marking the 80th anniversary of its victory over Imperial Japan in World War II

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended birthday greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping, 72, according to a statement from Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

 

“The president wished his Chinese counterpart and friend all the very best,” Peskov said.

 

The message comes on the heels of a visit by Xi in May, when he traveled to Moscow to participate in celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Soviet victory in World War II. Xi and Putin held a formal meeting at the Kremlin on May 8, joined by senior delegations from both sides. The talks lasted over three and a half hours and concluded with the signing of a number of joint agreements.

 

The Chinese Foreign Ministry described Xi’s visit to Moscow as “a complete success.”

 

Putin described the meeting with Xi as “highly positive” and emphasized the value of face-to-face dialogue. He also thanked the Chinese leader for attending the commemorative event and confirmed his own plans to visit China for ceremonies marking the defeat of militarist Japan.

 

Beijing has advocated a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict since it escalated in 2022. It has also been critical of the West’s unilateral sanctions against Russia and blamed NATO expansion for provoking the crisis. In 2023, China released a 12-point proposal, received favorably by Moscow, on how to resolve the conflict through a political settlement which respects the realities on the ground.

He told ABC's Rachel Scott that "it's possible we could get involved" - however he emphasized that the US military is "not at this moment involved" in the conflict. He pivoted to calling for peaceful resolution, saying the US would be "open" to Russian President Vladimir Putin being a mediator in. "He is ready. He called me about it. We had a long talk about it," Trump said. Of course, he campaigned against new wars starting and said these major conflicts would not have happened if he was president.

 

Regional sources are reporting on Sunday the highest number of observed strikes in daylight in an around Tehran. Israel's military says that over 80 sites were hit overnight, and has vowed to "hunt down" ballistic missile launchers in western Iran. Radar and anti-air defense batteries were also struck "as part of the IDF’s aerial superiority in Iranian airspace."

 

The densely populated capital of around 15 million has seen hundreds of thousands leave the city for safety. At least three different areas of Tehran have been heavily targeted in this latest wave, includin Niavaran to the north, and the Valiasr and Hafte Tir squares in the center of the city. The younger Soros has met with numerous high-profile Democrats to discuss issues that the foundation is involved in.

We are told, again and again, that Israel is defending itself. But it is only defending its right to act with impunity throughout the Middle East to maintain its supremacy. Israel's attack on Iran is just the latest example.

 

In the early hours of June 13, Israeli fighter jets struck deep into Iranian territory, targeting military installations, apartment blocks, and reportedly killing senior Iranian officials, including the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The attacks came without warning. They were neither reactive nor defensive. And yet, the Israeli government, true to form, rushed to describe the assault as a “preemptive strike”—as if the law bends itself to match the anxieties of a nuclear-armed state.

 

But language cannot disguise illegality. Israel’s framing collapses under the weight of international law. Article 51 of the UN Charter authorizes the use of force only in cases of self-defense if an armed attack occurs. In exceptional cases, states have tried to invoke anticipatory self-defense, citing an imminent and unavoidable threat. But even under this controversial doctrine, the bar is extraordinarily high: the threat must be “instant, overwhelming, and leaving no choice of means and no moment for deliberation,” as the Caroline case—still the prevailing standard—puts it. By Israel’s own admission, this was not a response to any immediate Iranian attack. There was no missile barrage, no ground incursion, no declaration of war. It was, at most, a preventive strike—an illegal act of aggression dressed up in the language of legitimacy.

 

Israel’s defenders will claim that Iran’s nuclear program poses an existential threat, even though U.S. intelligence agencies continue to affirm that Iran is not currently developing a nuclear weapon. Others will point to Iran’s regional influence or its support for proxy forces. But none of this justifies bombing another sovereign country without an imminent threat. There is a difference between “anxiety” and legality, and Israel cannot continue to collapse the two every time it chooses to strike.

 

This attack was not isolated. It is the latest flare in a sustained pattern of extraterritorial violence. In the past three years alone, Israel has bombed Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and now Iran—each time under the pretense of defense, each time flattening civilian infrastructure, killing children, and then turning to the world with outstretched hands, insisting it is the aggrieved party. It is a state that moves as if it were always under siege and always entitled to strike first, not in response to threat, but in response to the possibility of parity.

 

Indeed, Israeli officials seem to understand what their actions might provoke. In the hours following the attack on Tehran, Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that Israel was bracing for a “significant attack from the east.” A state truly acting in self-defense does not expect retaliation from the victim of its own aggression. What this reveals is not fear, but strategy. Israel struck Iran knowing it could provoke a response—knowing it could then leverage that retaliation to justify further escalation, knowing the cycle would deepen, and that the U.S. would once again be called upon to “stand by its ally.”

Will Americans Support “War on Iran for Israel?”

 

Do you think the U.S. citizens right now, the U.S. population, is ready to sacrifice many of their sons and daughters once again to go to war and die for the Israeli regime?

 

No, and I think this is a huge miscalculation on the part of the Zionist element in the American administration, and indeed the Congress. They seem to imagine that somehow they can gain enough popular support for a war that they can credibly threaten Iran. And I think that’s not the case. Neither of the two sides of the American red-versus-blue schism is the slightest bit interested in another big war for Israel. Obviously, the blue side, that is the Democrats who are opposed to Trump, are not going to be following the baboon in the White House like he’s some kind of great leader. We see a huge movement now rising up against “King Trump,” the “we don’t want a king” movement. And we see California getting close to wanting to secede from the union rather than allow Trump to send federal troops in to occupy California and have his way with the immigrants.

 

So the U.S. is on the brink of falling apart. There might be some in the Zionist circles of the Trump administration who imagine that somehow Trump could play the role of a macho, fearless leader and try to unite the country in a big war. But I think they’re probably even a minority within the administration. The majority of Trump support comes from people who see through these wars for Israel, who are sick of them, who don’t want more losing wars, like the catastrophes in Iraq and Afghanistan under the neocons.

 

So neither side is interested in any such war, and there’s no way that any interest or commitment to such a war could ever be sustained. It’ll never even really get off the ground. But even if they were able to whip up some kind of hysteria, if some Americans, a lot of Americans, suddenly died on Mideast military bases, I think that that rally around the flag effect would last about five seconds.

 

So the U.S. is not prepared for any major war. The Israelis, unfortunately, are. And they’re the ones who are trying to drag the U.S. into yet another disastrous war for Israel, which would certainly be lost and would probably be the final nail in the coffin of the U.S. empire.

Trump ‘open’ to Putin as Iran-Israel mediator

The US and Russian presidents previously discussed Middle East tensions in an hour-long phone conversation

 

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he is open to Russian President Vladimir Putin serving as a mediator in the Israel-Iran conflict. In an hour-long phone call the previous day, the two leaders focused on the Middle East crisis.

 

“Yeah, I would be open to it. He is ready. He called me about it,”Trump responded to ABC News’ Rachel Scott, when asked about Putin’s potential role in brokering peace.

 

“We had a long talk about it. We talked about this more than his situation. This is something I believe is going to get resolved,” Trump added.

 

After the phone call the Kremlin later said that Putin had condemned Israel’s strikes on Iran and expressed concern over further escalation, while reiterating Russia’s willingness to facilitate negotiations.

 

Putin recalled that Moscow had previously proposed concrete measures to facilitate “mutually acceptable agreements”in US-Iran nuclear negotiations before the current escalation, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov revealed.

 

“Russia’s principled position and commitment to resolving this issue remain unchanged,”Ushakov stated. “As President Putin emphasized, we will continue to act accordingly.”

 

Despite the cancellation of Oman-mediated nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington following Israel’s strikes,Trump maintained that discussions continued. “They’d like to make a deal. They’re talking,”he said, suggesting the escalation might actually accelerate diplomacy.

 

When asked about possible American engagement in the conflict, Trump stated: “We’re not involved in it. It’s possible we could get involved. But we are not at this moment involved.”

Trump warns Iran against attacking US

Tehran will face the America’s “full strength and might” if it targets the country’s assets, the president has warned

 

US President Donald Trump has warned Tehran of retaliation “at levels never seen before” if it decides to attack America in any way amid the escalation between Iran and Israel.

 

On Saturday, Fars News Agency reported, citing a source with access to the military leadership in Tehran, thatthe Iranian response to the IDF’s strikes on the country “will spread to all areas occupied by this [Israeli] regime and related US bases in the region in the coming days.”

 

Tehran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Iravani, said earlier that the American support for West Jerusalem has made Washington complicit in Israeli aggression against Iran.

 

Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Sunday to caution Tehran, saying “if we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before.”

 

The president insisted that “the US had nothing to do with the attack on Iran tonight.” He also urgedTehran to return to diplomacy, claiming “we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict.”

 

The sixth round of nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran, which had been scheduled to take place in Oman on Sunday, was canceled after Israel hit multiple targets across Iran on Friday, including uranium enrichment sites, while also assassinating several senior military commanders and scientists. West Jerusalem described the attack as a preemptive measure aimed at stopping Tehran from acquiring a nuclear bomb.

 

Iran, which has repeatedly denied pursuing a military nuclear program, said the airstrikes were tantamount to a declaration of war and responded by launching multiple volleys of ballistic missiles at targets in Israel, including in the country’s largest city, Tel Aviv.

 

The two countries continued to exchange strikes overnight, with Israel hitting Iran’s energy infrastructure and what it called sites “related to the Iranian regime’s nuclear weapons project.”

 

Tehran responded by firing more missiles at targets across Israel, including near Haifa and Tel Aviv, killing at least 10 people and wounding around 200 others, according to medics and media.

The conflict between Israel and Iran could benefit Russia by pushing up global oil prices and drawing international attention away from Ukraine, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has claimed.

 

On Friday morning, Israeli jets bombed military and nuclear sites across Iran, kicking off an ongoing exchange of hostilities between the two countries.

 

Speaking to reporters at the parliament building in Vilnius on Saturday,Nauseda argued that the Russian economy relies on “the damn petrodollars” and warned that rising energy prices could blunt the impact of EU sanctions.

 

“You get to live off every dollar when oil prices rise – so, unfortunately, it’s Russia that benefits,”he said.

 

“And sometimes you wonder whether those sanctions packages we debate for days and proudly adopt are ultimately undermined by the fact that oil prices are now much higher than before the conflict,” Nauseda added.

 

The president further warned that the new hostilities in the Middle East are “at least somewhat overshadowing the war in Ukraine.”

 

Lithuania, a member of both NATO and the EU, has been among Ukraine’s staunchest supporters, providing military aid and backing multiple rounds of sanctions against Moscow.

 

Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas echoed Nauseda’s concerns, cautioning that thefighting between Israel and Iran could “influence the political will” of the EU to keep pressuring Russia’s energy sector.

 

According to CNN, the price of US crude oil and Brent surged 7% on Friday after Iran retaliated against Israel.

Leading oncology scientists in Brazil have just announced a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer.

 

A team of scientists at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) has discovered that ivermectin nanoparticles destroy cancer cells, massively reducing tumors.

 

In a groundbreaking preclinical study, researchers led by Drs. Maiara Callegaro Velho and Ruy Carlos Ruver Beck showed that a nano-encapsulated form of ivermectin, when delivered intranasally, reduced glioma tumor volume in rats by over 70%.

 

The discovery is being hailed as a major development in the fight against glioblastoma, one of the deadliest forms of brain cancer.

 

This is the first study to investigate “nose-to-brain IVM delivery using nanotechnology,” the authors noted.

 

The team tested two ivermectin nanoformulations:

The result was a tumor shrinkage of more than 70%, along with healthier brain tissue, reduced swelling, and less abnormal blood vessel growth.

 

The treatment did not cause organ damage or lung toxicity.

 

These effects were observed at doses nearly 8 times lower than the amount approved for human antiparasitic use.

 

While ivermectin became a political flashpoint during the Covid pandemic, this study marks an exciting new breakthrough in oncology.

 

The study is rooted in science-based evidence with no exaggerations, leaving no room for establishment figures to dispute the findings.

 

The researchers emphasized the challenges of delivering therapeutics to the brain and how polymeric nano-carriers via intranasal delivery may finally offer a solution.

 

The scientists note that ivermectin’s bioavailability and inability to cross the blood-brain barrier have long hampered its cancer-fighting potential.

 

But nanoencapsulation may unlock the drug’s multi-target capabilities, especially against hard-to-treat brain tumors.

 

“This rigorously conducted study stays on an evidence-based science track,” the authors emphasized.

 

“The researchers avoided hyperbole, grounded the study in mechanistic oncology, and pursued a delivery route… with a growing track record in neurotherapeutics.”

 

This study signals a serious scientific breakthrough using a well-known, low-cost drug, repurposed in a novel nanoform.

 

Delivered non-invasively through the nose, ivermectin can be used to fight one of the most lethal cancers known to medicine.
