Democratic Virginia Lt. Gov. candidate Ghazala Hashmi said she doesn’t “really care” if children have access to sexually explicit materials in schools.

 

Hashmi, a state senator, made the comment during a 2023 Public Education Subcommittee discussion on Senate Bill SB1463 — legislation that would require all public and school libraries in Virginia to place parental advisory labels on books containing sexually explicit content that are accessible to minors.

The Amazon Web Services outage affected

 

Some owners of the Eight Sleep brand smart beds really lost some sleep over the Amazon Web Services outage on Monday. The outage affected internet platforms such as Roblox, Reddit, Amazon and thousands more, leaving people unable to work and access websites. But one of the more unusual effects of the outage involved the fancy bed accessories.

Eight Sleep manufactures internet-enabled bed accessories, including a temperature-adjusting mattress cover and a base that fits between your frame and mattress, allowing for adjustable angles during sleep. Using AI, the products can also track your sleep habits, respiratory patterns, heart rate and other health data to provide a customized sleeping experience without the need for a wearable device. Customers can pay extra for what's called Autopilot, the pod's AI component, which collects your sleep and health metrics.

 

Like many other companies, Eight Sleep's products use Amazon Web Services. So on Monday, the AWS outage caused problems for customers of the mattress, which costs at least $2,748.

 

Some reported on Reddit that they were woken up by their bed suddenly readjusting their preferred sleeping temperatures – some soaring as high as 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Others say their bed became stuck at an extreme incline. According to The Washington Post, some beds also blinked flashing lights and sounded wake-up alarms.

 

Eight Sleep CEO Matteo Franceschetti posted on X Monday that Eight Sleep was restoring its system and that the company would outage-proof the products.

 

"Our engineers are shipping Backup Mode as of yesterday: a transparent, automatic fallback that lets the Eight Sleep app speak directly to your Pod over Bluetooth when cloud infrastructure is unavailable," Alexandra Zatarain, Eight Sleep co-founder and vice-president of marketing, told CNET.

 

Backup Mode, she says, lets customers access the app and control their pods and base in the event of an AWS outage, something they couldn't do before. Autopilot will update data stored on the pod while it is offline.

HEARTBREAKING. Three brothers in Virginia were victims of a horrific crash, reportedly caused by a truck driver who hardly speaks English.

 

Zane (21) was killed. Boaz (14) is currently in critical condition. Toby (16) suffered a fracture to his back.

 

The truck driver, who reportedly struck the boys, claims that his dashcam has not been working for months.

Maybe you and i have discussed this before in the previous 8 years. I too remember people in the 70s and 80s who were 'strangely' (hehe, see what i did there?) strangely quick to ridicule any questions about fluoridation. It was openly admitted as being put in the water "for your teeth of course. What could be wrong with THAT?!"… but those same people would ignore the issue of mass dosing the population vs. just having it in your tooth paste if you want. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Finney, who has known Diddy for more than three decades, said that the attack appears to have been carried out as a warning rather than an actual assault, noting that the aggressor could easily have "harmed" the music mogul if he had wanted to.

 

"He woke up with a knife to his throat," Finney said, adding that this isn't the first time the music producer has been nearly injured inside the jail.

 

"I don't know whether he fought him off or the guards came, I just know that it happened. If this guy had wanted to harm him, Sean would have been harmed. It would only take a second to cut his throat with a weapon and kill him.

Alleged Chinese Fentanyl Kingpin Recaptured in Cuba Following Mexico Escape

A Chinese fugitive wanted on suspicion of trafficking huge quantities of fentanyl and cocaine into the United States has been recaptured in Cuba, Mexican authorities said on Wednesday.

Zhang Zhi Dong—who has numerous aliases, including “Brother Wang” and “El Chino”—fled to Mexico after being indicted in federal court in Atlanta in 2022 on drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

Mexican authorities captured him in Mexico City in October 2024 at the request of the U.S. government, but this July, he escaped the home where he was held under armed guard after a judge granted him house arrest.

 

On Wednesday, Mexico’s Security Cabinet said the alleged trafficker was arrested in Cuba, but did not identify him by name.

A federal official confirmed that it was Zhang, according to The Associated Press.

 

Deportation to Mexico

After escaping Mexico, Zhang traveled to Cuba and then Russia, where he was denied entry and returned to Cuba, according to a Mexican federal agent, who also told AP that Zhang now faces deportation to Mexico.

 

Once in Mexico, he could be extradited to the United States to face the multiple charges of drug trafficking and money laundering filed against him in Atlanta.

 

Interpol issued a Red Notice requesting the arrest of the Chinese national, who arrived in Cuba with a fake passport after he was denied entry to Russia, according to Mexican media.

According to Spanish-language daily El País, authorities believe the alleged drug lord is connected to a criminal organization with links to the Sinaloa cartel and the Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG), and is a priority target for the United States.

El País said Zhang is estimated to have allegedly trafficked more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine and nearly 2,000 kilograms of fentanyl from Mexico to the U.S.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been pursuing Zhang for some time, accusing him of running a criminal network that has been linked to both of Mexico’s main cartels since at least 2016.

 

Moved to House Arrest

 

Zhang is alleged to run an organization with bases in Los Angeles and Atlanta, and to have links in Central America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

He was being held in a maximum-security prison in Mexico until a judge granted him house arrest, from where he escaped despite being under military custody.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the judge’s decision, Mexico News Daily reported.

 

The decision to move Zhang to house arrest came when Mexico was in the middle of negotiating a security agreement with the United States, and when Sheinbaum was attempting to avert steep tariffs threatened by the Trump administration.

Trump Accuses Mexico

 

U.S. President Donald Trump has accused Mexico of not doing enough to stop fentanyl from being smuggled over the border with the United States.

The ingredients for fentanyl are produced in China and exported to Mexico, where syndicates manufacture the highly addictive and dangerous drug, which is shipped across the border for sale to Americans.

Fentanyl constitutes the majority of all drug overdose deaths in the United States, having caused the deaths of nearly 75,000 Americans in 2023.

The first wave of the opioid epidemic in the U.S. began in the 1990s with the misuse of prescription painkillers. This surged when illicit, synthetic fentanyl began to flood into the United States in 2013. The drug is estimated to be 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine, making the risk of death from overdose much higher than for other drugs.

 

On Oct. 6, the U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned Mexican companies and individuals accused of supplying precursor chemicals for fentanyl production to the Sinaloa cartel.

Government documents filed in the Atlanta case describe a drug trafficking network allegedly led by Zhang that imported cocaine and fentanyl into the United States and then distributed it through hubs in Atlanta and Los Angeles. He referred to the drugs as “coffee” and “food,” respectively, in coded language, according to the court documents.

Zhang is accused of laundering at least $20 million in the U.S. between 2020 and 2021 through a complex network of more than 150 shell companies and 170 bank accounts.

The Sordid History of U.S. “Aid” to Colombia

 

President Trump is rattling his saber against Colombian President Gustavo Petro to punish him for accusing the U.S. government of murdering Venezuelan fishermen. Trump has boasted of the killings by the U.S. military but claims all the targets were drug smugglers. Trump has threatened to suspend all U.S. government handouts for the Colombian government. Trump warned that Petro that he “better close up” cocaine production “or the United States will close them up for him, and it won’t be done nicely.”

 

Tapping his own psychiatric expertise, Trump proclaimed that Colombia has “the worst president they’ve ever had – a lunatic with serious mental problems.”

 

Is anyone in the Trump White House aware of the long history of U.S. failure in that part of the world? In 1989, President George H.W. Bush warned Colombian drug dealers that they were “no match for an angry America.” But Colombia remains the world’s largest cocaine producer despite billions of dollars of U.S. government anti-drug aid to the Colombian government.

 

The Clinton administration made Colombia its top target in its international war on drugs. Clinton drug warriors deluged the Colombian government with U.S. tax dollars to deluge Colombia with toxic spray. The New York Times reported that U.S.-financed planes repeatedly sprayed pesticides onto schoolchildren, making many of them ill. Colombian environmental minister Juan Mayr publicly declared in 1999 that the crop spraying program has been a failure and warned, “We can’t permanently fumigate the country.”

 

As I wrote in the American Spectator in 1999: “Colombia has received almost a billion dollars of anti-narcotics aid since 1990. Coca production is skyrocketing–doubling since 1996 and, according to the General Accounting Office, expected to increase another 50 percent in the next two years. Colombia now supplies roughly three-quarters of the heroin and almost all the cocaine consumed in the United States.”
