New York City’s Housing Economics Are Broken—and It’s Squeezing Everyone

Vacancy rates have plunged to historic lows, sitting at just 1.4% citywide. For the most affordable units—those priced at $1,100 or less—that number drops to just 0.7%, according to the most recent Housing and Vacancy Survey.

 

That scarcity has pushed median asking rents to $3,491 in the second quarter of 2025, or 55% of the typical household income, according to Realtor.com® data. For would-be buyers, the outlook isn’t much better: Mortgage originations have dropped across all five boroughs, falling to their lowest level since at least 2006.

 

The consequences are piling up. Housing affordability has become a flashpoint in the city’s highly contentious mayoral election, all while the city’s shelter population has soared well past pre-pandemic levels, with families now making up a growing share of the surge, according to data from NYU Furman Center.

 

“People are moving out of New York because they don't have housing options,” says Rachel Fee, executive director of the New York Housing Conference, a nonprofit devoted to advancing affordable housing for all New Yorkers. “And if this is not addressed, it will take a toll on our economy.”

The median renter household made $63,698 in 2023—about 20% more than in 2013 after adjusting for inflation. But more than half of renters still spend at least 30% of their income on rent. And while rents in 2023 were 25% higher than they were in 2007, renter incomes were only 15% higher, down from their peak in 2019.

 

The burden is especially acute for renters earning between $30,000 and $80,000 annually. These households often fall into a policy blind spot: They earn too much to qualify for deeply subsidized housing but not enough to afford market-rate rents in most neighborhoods. As a result, many in this income band spend well above 30%—and in some cases more than 50%—of their income on housing, putting them at higher risk of housing instability, financial distress, or eviction.

If NYC got rid of the illegal population that would free up a lot of affordable housing units. Rents tend to go down when inventory expands. Instead, Zorhan is going to bar ICE from deporting them. This keeps rents up with less inventory of rental units available.

 

Zorhan is a disaster to NYC real estate. When (and if) he freezes rents, apartments will not be maintained. When the apartments reach the point they are "unlivable", the building has lost value. Whole neighborhoods are lost to decay.

 

Under Zoharan, the price of real estate will come down in NYC, just not the way he has presented it to occur.

Manhattan home values have declined by roughly 20% from their 2022 peak, while rents have remained high or recovered more quickly, resulting in a sharp decline in the ratio of home values to rents.

 

“Ignore talk about “NYC-exodus” and buy Manhattan long-term,” Gerli wrote. “It’s one of the few truly undervalued housing markets in the U.S.”

 

Gerli points to post-pandemic stabilization in population trends as evidence that demand is returning. Manhattan’s population has been rising again since 2023, suggesting the pandemic-era exodus is starting to reverse.

 

Still, Gerli cautions that “undervalued” does not mean “affordable.” The median condo price in Manhattan remains above $1 million, with monthly costs — when factoring in taxes, mortgage payments, and HOA fees — often exceeding $8,000. For most Americans, owning a home in Manhattan remains out of reach.

100-foot wind turbine blade flies off, lands in Plymouth cranberry bog

A blade from a 300-foot-tall wind turbine located in Plymouth detached, flew off and landed in a cranberry bog on Friday afternoon.

 

The incident happened at around 1:52 p.m. on Friday, in the area of 810 Head of the Bay Road in Plymouth, according to the Plymouth Fire Department.

 

A “concerned neighbor” called the fire department to report one of the three 75- to 100-foot-long blades from a nearby wind turbine was “suddenly missing,” the department said.

 

The massive detached blade was found by firefighters several hundred feet away from the base of the turbine, resting in an open cranberry bog area, according to the department.

 

There were no injuries reported from the incident and there is no ongoing danger to the public, the fire department said.

 

No homes or occupied buildings were nearby where the blade fell, as the area is remote and surrounded by cranberry bogs. Firefighters confirmed there were “no additional hazards” present at the scene.

 

The maintenance company that is responsible for the wind turbine responded to the scene and is inspecting to determine the cause of the failure. The company stated the turbine automatically entered a fail-safe mode and shut down immediately after the blade detached, the fire department said.

 

The maintenance company has sectioned off the area where the blade fell and is arranging for contractors to remove it and clean the scene, the fire department said. Fire crews have since left the scene as of Friday evening as the contractor continues its cleanup and incident review.

 

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and the Town of Plymouth’s Inspectional Services Department have been notified of the incident, the fire department said.

A Complex Jet Structure Emanates from 3I/ATLAS After Perihelion

This morning, at 4.10 Universal Time (UT) on November 8, 2025, the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS showed a complex jet structure. M. Jäger, G. Rhemann and E. Prosperi observed 3I/ATLAS at 29 degrees separation from the Sun in the sky, as reported here.

The stacked images, constituting 24 exposures in the green filter— each lasting 35 seconds , 2 exposures in a red filter and 2 exposures in a blue filter, show a large glowing halo extending out to half a million kilometers (5 arcminutes).

The images show at least 7 distinct jets, some of which are anti-tails in the sunward direction.

 

At the time of observations, 3I/ATLAS was 7–10 degrees above the horizon. Eventually, twilight interfered with the observations, which took place under a bright moonlight.

Is the network of jets associated with pockets of ice on the surface of a natural cometary nucleus or are they coming from a set of jet thrusters used for navigation of a spacecraft? We do not know.

For now, let us enjoy the view. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.

First Radio Signal from 3I/ATLAS: Absorption by Hydroxyl Radicals (OH Molecules)

November 8, 2025

 

MeerKAT, a radio telescope with a diameter of 13.5 meters operated by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory, detected radio absorption lines by hydroxyl radicals, namely OH molecules, from the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS.

The report by D.J. Pisano and collaborators was posted on The Astronomer’s Telegram here.

 

MeerKAT observed 3I/ATLAS on October 24, 2025 when the angular separation of 3I/ATLAS from the Sun was 3.76 degrees, just 7 times the diameter of the Sun in the sky.

The OH absorption signal was detected in two spectral lines at radio frequencies of 1.665 and 1.667 gigahertz. The two lines revealed absorption at Doppler velocity shifts of -15.59 (+/-0.16) and -15.65(+/-0.17) kilometers per second, respectively.

The full-width-at-half-maximum of the absorption lines were 0.88(+/-0.37) and 1.26(+/-0.40) kilometers per second, respectively. Previous attempts to detect these lines with MeerKAT on September 20 and 28, 2025 were not successful.

 

The solar conjunction of 3I/ATLAS relative to Earth occurred a few days earlier, on October 21, 2025, when the object was traveling very close to the orbital plane of the Earth around the Sun.

Given that the velocity vector of 3I/ATLAS was nearly perpendicular to MeerKAT’s line-of-sight, the Doppler shift of the OH absorption results from the full speed of 3I/ATLAS relative to Earth of (30+68)=98 kilometers per second, times the sine of the angle between the direction of relative motion and MeerKAT’s line-of-sight to 3I/ATLAS on October 24. This angle was apparently 9.2 degrees.

 

Given that 3I/ATLAS was separated from the Sun by 1.38 times the Earth-Sun separation, its surface temperature was smaller than that of Earth by roughly the square root of 1.38.

This is because the solar heating rate scales inversely with separation squared, whereas surface cooling scales as temperature to the 4th power.

The resulting thermal speed of the OH molecules shed from the surface of 3I/ATLAS at a temperature of ~230 degrees Kelvin, yields thermal broadening of the OH lines by a full-width at half maximum of ~0.8 kilometers per second — in agreement with the observed widths.

Coincidentally, I taught thermal broadening in my class “Radiative Processes in Astrophysics” at the Harvard Astronomy department a month ago.

 

This absorption signal constitutes the first radio detection of 3I/ATLAS.

Five weeks ago, I encouraged radio observatories like MeerKAT to search for radio emission from 3I/ATLAS given that the arrival direction of 3I/ATLAS coincided to within 9 degrees with the arrival direction of the Wow! Signal detected in 1977 at a frequency of 1.4204556 gigahertz (as discussed here).

In response, I was assured that 3I/ATLAS will be monitored by radio observatories like MeerKAT. So far there was no report on a radio detection of 3I/ATLAS other than the OH absorption signal.

On March 16, 2026, 3I/ATLAS is expected to pass within 53 million kilometers from Jupiter. At that time, the Juno spacecraft will use its dipole antenna to search for a radio signal from 3I/ATLAS at low frequencies ranging from 50 hertz to 40 megahertz.

Patti Marie Kerkhoff, age 60, of Lewis Center, passed away on August 12, 2024, after a 3-year battle with pancreatic cancer. This past April, Patti had a bad episode and we were certain we lost her. She knew it was not her time and rallied, gifting us with more time. How lucky we were to get three more months of precious time to cherish her and make more memories on top of what was already a blessed life. Patti made us laugh, even in her final days. The most amazing part is how she wanted to protect us and take away our sadness. The grace she showed throughout her fight against cancer is one that we will forever be in awe of.

 

Four days before her passing, we weren’t sure Patti would make it through the night. The following morning, Taylor went to see her crying and she said, “It’s okay. There will come a day when I won’t wake up but I’ll still be here, just in a different way.” The days that followed were filled with the most special moments surrounded by family, beautiful weather, and she even let us take her for a ride on her golf cart named “Tulip.”

 

She was born on May 3, 1964 to Marvin and Eloise Hennin in Las Vegas, Nevada. Patti met Brandt in 8th grade home room at Parkview Middle School in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin. Married in 1984, Patti and Brandt went on to have three children; Brin, Taylor, and Shauni. Her favorite role was being a mother. She never missed a practice, game, or award ceremony and she was so proud of her children’s accomplishments. She treated everyone like family and her smile and bright friendly personality were infectious.

 

Patti was preceded in death by her mother and father. She is survived by her beloved spouse, Brandt, three daughters, granddaughter named Lane, and her dog named Nutmeg. While no amount of time with her would have ever been enough, we are happy she is finally at peace and can rest. What a beautiful life she made for us, one that makes this goodbye that much harder.

 

In lieu of a formal funeral, we will be having a celebration of life at Patti and Brandt’s home on August 31st, 2024 from 1:00-6:00pm. Also, the family requests that instead of flowers, donations be made to a few organizations near and dear to Patti’s heart.

Mars is about to receive a double dose of attention.

This weekend, a pair of identical NASA satellites will launch together to help reveal how the Red Planet lost its thick atmosphere and liquid water — one of its oldest mysteries, and a key to understanding how it transformed from a once-habitable world into the frozen desert it is today.

 

Scheduled for liftoff no earlier than Sunday (Nov. 9) aboard Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, the $80 million ESCAPADE mission — short for Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers — will send two twin probes, nicknamed Blue and Gold, to orbit Mars in tandem.

The mission marks NASA's first dual-satellite mission to another planet, and aims to create a 3D view of how the solar wind, the stream of charged particles from the sun, energizes and strips away Martian air.

 

"To understand how the solar wind drives different kinds of atmospheric escape is a key piece of the puzzle of the climate evolution of Mars," Robert Lillis, principal investigator for ESCAPADE and associate director for planetary science at the University of California, Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory, said in a statement released Wednesday (Nov. 5).

"ESCAPADE gives us what you might call a stereo perspective — two different vantage points simultaneously."

 

Geologic evidence from ancient river valleys and water-formed minerals shows that Mars once had liquid water, which means it also had a much thicker atmosphere.

But around 4 billion years ago, the planet's magnetic field, which is the invisible shield that protects a world from the sun's radiation, began to fade.

Without that protection, the solar wind slowly stripped away the Martian atmosphere, leaving behind a tenuous wisp less than 1% as dense as Earth's.

 

Previous missions, including NASA's Mars Global Surveyor, MAVEN, and the Emirates Mars Mission Hope, have shown that Mars lacks a global magnetic field but retains patchy magnetic "bubbles" locked into its crust.

However, with only one spacecraft in orbit at a time, researchers have been limited to viewing one region at a time, often hours apart.

 

With the ESCAPADE satellites, "we can monitor how those regions vary on timescales as short as two minutes and up to 30 minutes," Lillis said in the statement.

"This will allow us to really make measurements we've never made before, and to characterize a very dynamic system in a way we couldn't characterize it before."

After reaching Mars in September 2027, the robotic duo will spend about seven months fine-tuning their orbits before flying in formation, like a "pair of pearls on a string," coming within 100 miles (160 kilometers) above the surface.

If all goes to plan, after six months of joint observations, they will separate into different orbits for another five months to build a 3D map of how energy and matter flow between Mars and the solar wind, the process that controls atmospheric loss.

 

Over roughly 11 months of science operations, ESCAPADE will explore three key questions, including how Mars’ magnetic bubble is shaped, how energy from the sun interacts with it, and how this affects the flow of particles in and out of the planet’s atmosphere.

To achieve this, each probe, about the size of a copy machine, carries an identical suite of instruments working in concert. Electrostatic analyzers, built at UC Berkeley, will detect charged particles escaping from Mars; by measuring their direction and energy, scientists can determine whether those particles are falling back toward the planet or being swept away by the solar wind, the statement says.

 

A magnetometer from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center will track the strength and orientation of magnetic fields, while plasma sensors from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will probe plasma properties.

Meanwhile, student-built cameras from Northern Arizona University will capture images of Mars, and may even catch glimpses of its mysterious green auroras.

 

ESCAPADE is also testing a clever new route to Mars. Instead of heading directly to Mars, the spacecraft will first gear toward a Lagrange point, a gravitational “sweet spot” between Earth and the sun, for about a year before slingshotting toward Mars in 2026.

This longer but more flexible route could make future missions less dependent on the narrow, once-every-two-years Mars launch windows, scientists say.

 

Understanding how solar radiation interacts with Mars' upper atmosphere, known as the ionosphere, could also aid future explorers.

On Mars, radio waves can reflect off the ionosphere to travel beyond the horizon, so mapping how this layer behaves will be vital for communication and navigation.

The mission's results may even hint at whether liquid water still lingers underground, a possibility supported by recent analyses of seismic data from NASA's InSight lander — and a key question for future human exploration.

 

"It is definitely going to be a challenge to establish a human settlement on Mars," Lillis said in the same statement. "But, you know, humans are tenacious, right?"

The real people who can make America great again have to be tech savy because advantages come from those types of efficiencies, either in their offerings of value or novelty. Pope Leo Declares Jesus Alone Saved the World, Rejects Title of Mary as 'Co-Redeemer'

 

A decree from Pope Leo's office firmly rejects the claim that Mary, Jesus' mother, helped save the world from damnation, settling a debate that has baffled the Catholic community by stating that Jesus alone redeemed humanity by his crucifixion and death.

 

In a lengthy note titled "Mater Populi Fidelis" or "Mother of the Faithful People of God," the Vatican's doctrinal office instructed Catholics to no longer give her the title of "co-redemptrix" or "co-redeemer" as it "carries the risk of eclipsing the exclusive role of Jesus Christ" as the Savior.

 

The October 7th document was approved by Pope Leo XIV and signed by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández and says the previous title creates confusion to the "truths of the Christian faith."

 

"She is the mother who gave the world the author of redemption and of grace, who stood firm at the foot of the cross (cf. John 19:25), suffering alongside her son and offering the pain of her maternal heart pierced by the sword (cf. Luke 2:35)," the document said. "From the Incarnation to the cross and the Resurrection, she was united to Christ in a way that is unique and that far surpasses any other believer."

 

"Mary's incomparable greatness lies in what she has received and in her trusting readiness to allow herself to be overtaken by the Spirit," it continued.

 

The note claims that Mary was the first and perfect disciple of Jesus, according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

According to the Catholic News Agency, the title of "Co-redemptrix" has been a point of debate for decades, as some Catholics have called for Mary's "title" to be declared dogma, while opponents say it exaggerates her importance and could isolate Catholics amongst other Christian denominations.

 

The late Pope Francis also strongly opposed granting Mary the title of "co-redeemer," and according to Reuters, he suggested the idea was "foolishness." "She never wanted to take anything for herself from her son," Francis said in 2019.

 

Additionally, Benedict XVI, Francis' predecessor, also opposed the title. However, his predecessor, John Paul II, supported the title until the mid-90s when the doctrinal office began to voice skepticism.

 

"Everything comes from Him – Christ – as the Letter to the Ephesians and the Letter to the Colossians, in particular, tell us; Mary, too, is everything that she is through Him. The word 'Co-redemptrix' would obscure this origin," Benedict once said.

 

Fernández presented the document during a conference at the Jesuit headquarters in Rome last week and said its teaching becomes part of the church's "ordinary magisterium" and must be considered authoritative, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops reports.

 

"Any gaze directed at her that distracts us from Christ or that places her on the same level as the Son of God would fall outside the dynamic proper to an authentically Marian faith," the note said in part.

Searing audio and emotional testimony from the US Capitol Police will be a cornerstone of the first January 6 criminal trial, prosecutors made clear Wednesday on the first day of witness testimony and evidence presentation against a defendant from Texas.

 

In federal court in Washington, prosecutors unveiled audio recordings of Capitol Police officers calling for help as Trump supporters attacked Capitol Hill. A Capitol Police inspector testifying to the jury broke down as she spoke about the failing police line, then watched videos of the building being breached.

 

Defendant Guy Reffitt, a member of a right-wing anti-government group in Texas who had stood at the front of the crowd with a bullhorn, is on trial for five charges. He is accused of taking a gun to the Capitol, interfering with two police officers outside the building and threatening his children when he returned home. Reffitt has pleaded not guilty.

 

The Justice Department has collected hundreds of hours of video for its prosecutions related to January 6, 2021, and in the Reffitt case is also using witnesses to explain what it believes his role was in the broader storming of the Capitol and disruption of Congress.

 

The prosecutors called Reffitt a leader of the crowd on Wednesday – “the tip of this mob’s spear,” according to prosecutor Jeffrey Nestler.

Prosecutors played Capitol Police audio recordings during testimony from an officer who had confronted Reffitt at the front of the crowd on the Capitol’s West Terrace. The recordings captured panicked officers calling for help.

 

“We need every single unit on the Upper West Terrace right now,” one officer shouted in the recordings, which took place just before 2 p.m.

 

“They’re breaching the Upper West Terrace. All units respond,” a dispatcher responded.

 

Capitol Police Officer Shauni Kerkhofftestified that she had fired pepper balls at Reffitt as he stood on a railing on the Capitol steps shouting into a megaphone. Reffitt, wearing protective armor, was undeterred, she said.

 

As the riot escalated, Kerkhoff said, she was “panicked,” screaming that “they’re coming up the stairs” and “we need backup.” She also said she feared the crowd would get into the building, where members of Congress were.

Later in the day Wednesday, Inspector Monique Moore, who was in charge of the US Capitol Police’s command center, choked up while testifying about the January 6 attack.

 

“It was hard to hear my officers screaming for help,” she told the jury.

 

Moore said she was trying to get resources for Capitol Police that day, as they were overwhelmed by the crowd.

 

“The mood was in disbelief,” she said.

 

Moore then paused for several seconds, fanning her face briefly, before continuing to speak.

 

“This was our first time ever seeing anything of such … at least for my 24 years,” she said. “We’ve never seen the actions of individuals who came up to the Capitol with total disregard of the police, the law and democracy.”

 

Moore testified that she was the one who had called other law enforcement forces, including the US Park Police and the Secret Service, for help.

 

Prosecutors also played surveillance video that showed Capitol windows from the inside as rioters broke into them and spilled into the building.

 

“That is the breach of the Capitol,” Moore said.

At the start of the trial, prosecutors told the jury they plan to use ample video and audio recordings to prove their case.

 

They say they also will use Reffitt’s own words against him, by showing the jury a recorded videoconference where the defendant spoke to his right-wing group about the insurrection, along with recordings of a family argument days after the attack and Reffitt’s own recordings on the National Mall as he made threatening comments about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

 

“Ripping them out by their hair. Every fking one of them. Dragging them out kicking and fking screaming. I just want to see Pelosi’s head hitting every f**king stair on the way out, and Mitch McConnell too,” prosecutors quoted Reffitt saying, pledging to show several videos in the coming days that captured his statements during the attack and afterward.

 

Jurors – who include a Walgreens cashier, a person with a second home in the Caribbean, and federal government employees, including one who works on Capitol Hill – appeared to take notes throughout, and especially watched closely as video showed Reffitt at the front of the crowd.

 

Reffitt’s defense attorney William Welch countered the prosecutors’ outline of the evidence with a three-minute opening statement. He told the jury that Reffitt had never assaulted anyone and was not armed and that any altercation with police where he had been pepper-sprayed outside the Capitol had ended quickly.

Another North Texan is now out of federal prison, after serving time for storming the U.S. Capitol on January 6. This comes after President Trump granted clemency to 1,500 supporters who protested the 2020 election results. Sophia Beausoleil is in the newsroom with more.

 

A North Texas man sentenced to 7.5 years in federal prison after being convicted of crimes related to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol shared a message for his estranged son after he was released from jail following a pardon by President Donald Trump.

 

Guy Reffitt of Wylie was the first person to be convicted in the Jan. 6 riot and was among the estimated 1,500 people who received a complete and unconditional pardon on Monday for offenses at or near the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

 

After being released from the D.C. Central Detention Facility, Reffitt spoke to reporters outside, where he thanked the president for his freedom while addressing the strain his arrest and confinement had on his family.

 

On Jan. 6, 2021, Reffitt was recorded on cameras outside the U.S. Capitol carrying a holstered handgun and wearing a helmet, body armor, and zip-tie handcuffs. According to a court filing, prosecutors said he told fellow militia members that he planned to drag then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi out of the U.S. Capitol building by her ankles “with her head hitting every step on the way down."

After Reffitt returned home to North Texas, his son Jackson said his father threatened him and his sister and said they would be traitors if they reported him to authorities. Jackson testified his father warned them that "traitors get shot" and said he used a cellphone app to secretly record his father boasting about his role in the riot.

 

Jackson reported his father's behavior to the FBI in December 2020, days before the riot, and later testified he was terrified of his father's threat. Reffitt's daughter Peyton also testified and gave an emotional testimony where she said her father wasn't a threat but that his mental health was the "real issue." As she choked up, her father could be seen to her left, visibly crying.

Ten years have passed since five justices discovered a constitutional right to same-sex marriage hidden somewhere in the Fourteenth Amendment’s penumbras. In that decade, over 823,000 same-sex couples have married, raising some 300,000 children together. These families have built lives around what the Court declared in Obergefell v. Hodges, even as conservative legal scholars have consistently argued the decision represents precisely the kind of judicial overreach the Founders warned against.

 

The Supreme Court’s composition has shifted considerably since 2015. Where once stood a slim majority willing to create new constitutional rights from whole cloth, now sits a Court increasingly committed to originalist interpretation—and honestly, it’s about time. Justice Clarence Thomas, writing in his Dobbs concurrence, made clear that substantive due process decisions like Obergefell rest on shaky constitutional ground. Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who became a lightning rod in 2015 for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, owes $360,000 in damages after losing her religious liberty defense in lower courts. Her appeal doesn’t just seek financial relief—it challenges Obergefell itself as “egregiously wrong” and “deeply damaging.”

Ask yourself: if the Court can just invent rights whenever five justices feel like it, why do we even have a Constitution? The Court’s willingness to overturn Roe after nearly fifty years sent a clear message: precedent alone doesn’t sanctify constitutional error.

 

Yet here’s where principle meets politics, and conservatives face an uncomfortable truth. Public support for same-sex marriage has reached 69%, according to Gallup. Twenty-six states have trigger laws ready to restrict marriage equality if Obergefell falls, but implementing them would likely spark the kind of backlash Republicans faced after Dobbs. The 2022 midterms should have been a red wave; instead, abortion politics turned them into a trickle.

 

The Davis case presents the Court with what lawyers call a “vehicle”—a pathway to reconsider broader constitutional questions. Whether four justices vote to hear it remains uncertain. Justice Thomas would likely welcome the opportunity, but his colleagues may prefer waiting for a case with cleaner facts or better timing. Here’s what I think: they’re watching the political winds as much as the legal arguments. The federal Respect for Marriage Act, signed in 2022, complicates matters by ensuring federal recognition regardless of state law.

Using data from NASA's Juno spacecraft, scientists have discovered that the solar system's most volcanic body is even hotter than we thought. In fact, Jupiter's moon Io could be emitting hundreds of times as much heat from its surface as was previously estimated.

The reason for this underestimate wasn't due to a lack of data, but was a result of how Juno's data was interpreted. The results also demonstrate that about half of the heat radiating from Io comes from just 17 of 266 the moon's known volcanic sources.

The team behind this research thinks that this clear concentration of heat, rather than a global emission, could suggest that an Io-wide lava lake may not exist beneath the surface of this moon of Jupiter as has previously been theorized.

 

"In recent years, several studies have proposed that the distribution of heat emitted by Io, measured in the infrared spectrum, could help us understand whether a global magma ocean existed beneath its surface," team leader Federico Tosi of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) said in a translated statement.

"However, comparing these results with other Juno data and more detailed thermal models, we realized that something wasn't right: the thermal output values ​​appeared too low compared to the physical characteristics of known lava lakes."

 

Tosi continued by explaining that until now, studies of Io have focused heavily on a specific band of infrared light known as the M-band.

M-band data collected by the Jovian InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) aboard Juno have been invaluable in identifying the hottest regions of Io and thus for understanding its volcanism, but Tosi says the measurements collected in this spectral band could have influenced previous heat estimates

 

"The problem is that this band is sensitive only to the highest temperatures, and therefore tends to favor the most incandescent areas of volcanoes, neglecting the colder but much more extensive ones," Tosi said.

"In practice, it's like estimating the brightness of a bonfire by observing only the flames and not the surrounding embers: you capture the brightest spots, but you don't measure all the energy actually emitted."

Seeing Io in a different light

Reconsidering their approach to analyzing Juno's JIRAM data changed the team's view of the structure of Io's lava lakes.

They found that most of Io's volcanoes are not uniformly hot but instead possess a hot and bright outer ring with a cooler, solid central crust.

This latter region is less bright in the M-band of infrared light but covers a larger surface area, allowing it to emit an enormous amount of heat.

 

"When this 'hidden' component is also considered, the actual heat flux is up to hundreds of times higher than that calculated by analyzing the M-band alone," Tosi continued.

"This is a significant leap, because it changes the scale of the satellite's [Io's] energy balance."

 

This could have implications for the suggested global ocean of magma below the surface of Io, but Tosi is clear that the existence of this feature isn't something that can be completely ruled out by this research.

In fact, he theorizes that M-band JIRAM data can't be used to confirm this magma ocean.

 

"Our caution, therefore, is well-founded: we're not saying that such an ocean doesn't exist, but that it can't be deduced from these observations," Tosi said.

"It's important to recognize the limitations of the available data before drawing too strong conclusions on such a complex issue."

 

Unfortunately, it may be a while before scientists get such a good look at Io again, so the question of its global magma ocean may remain unanswered.

"In 2023 and 2024, Juno performed the closest and most detailed observations of Io ever obtained by a spacecraft. In the coming year, however, the natural evolution of the spacecraft's orbit will not allow for such close passes again," Tosi said.

"Future missions to the Jovian system, such as ESA's Juice and NASA's Europa Clipper, will not be able to observe Io with comparable spatial resolution, as they will be primarily dedicated to Ganymede and Europa.

"Nevertheless, monitoring Io remains crucial."

 

He added that the team's findings should provide a framework that can be used to more accurately interpret even remote spacecraft observations of Io. This could finally help researchers get to the bottom of why this Jovian moon is so violently volcanic.

"Looking ahead, this experience could also inform the design of future missions specifically dedicated to Io, which could finally directly observe the processes that fuel the most intense volcanism in the solar system," Tosi concluded.
