Predators are reaching children through apps, social media and now, video games

 

Children are being sexually exploited by predators lurking on the internet, social media apps, and now gaming platforms. It’s happening in small towns and big cities across the country, including Ohio.

 

"The monsters that we are chasing are now coming into your home with some device,” said Kirtland Police Chief Jamey Fisher.

 

Kirtland Police Detective Jake Scott is on a mission to stop it.

 

“I will pursue these relentlessly,” said Scott.

 

Two years ago, Kirtland Police signed an agreement with the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force to investigate these types of crimes in their community. Case referrals began landing on Scott's desk.

 

"Anywhere on the internet where there are children, there’s going to be adults who have a proclivity for sexual abuse of children trying to speak with those kids, groom those kids and foster relationships," Scott said.

 

His first case involved 45-year-old Todd Oravecz, a Kirtland man who was arrested, indicted, and pleaded guilty to several charges, including receipt, distribution and transportation of visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Agents found more than 100 child sexual abuse material images and videos on his electronic devices that included children under 12 years old.

CLEVELAND — Children are being sexually exploited by predators lurking on the internet, social media apps, and now gaming platforms. It’s happening in small towns and big cities across the country, including Ohio.

 

"The monsters that we are chasing are now coming into your home with some device,” said Kirtland Police Chief Jamey Fisher.

Oravecz was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.

Ohio receives roughly 30,000 case referrals a year from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children; Kirtland received 10 of those cases.

 

But these crimes aren’t just happening in Kirtland and Lake County.

 

"Everywhere, if your child has access to the internet,” said Fisher.

 

"Child sexual exploitation is becoming an increasingly prevalent problem, we see all across our district,” said David Toepfer, U.S Attorney Northern District of Ohio.

In four months, border agents arrest 1,000 child sex offenders in Tampa area

 

The 1,000th arrest was a Trinidad national who was in the U.S. illegally on an expired visa and attempted to evade prosecution on child sex offense charges

 

Border Patrol agents working in Tampa, Florida, have arrested their 1,000th child sex offender in just four months. The 1,000th arrest was of a Trinidadian man convicted of five felony child sex offenses in Hillsborough County with a lengthy criminal record.

 

They’re working out of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Miami Sector’s Tampa Station, one of the oldest Border Patrol stations in the country.

 

The Tampa Station first opened in 1925 to respond to large smuggling rings entering Florida using Cuban fishing boats. It is the only station on Florida’s west coast.

 

Its area of responsibility covers 12 counties in central and western Florida, spanning 190 miles long and 125 miles wide. It also includes three seaports. From the Gulf, it stretches east to Lake, Osceola, Highland and Glades counties. It stretches north to Levy and Marion counties and south to Lee County.

 

The 1,000th arrest and “significant milestone is further proof that Border Patrol agents remain committed to making our communities safer by apprehending and removing the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens,” Acting Chief Patrol Agent Samuel Briggs II, Miami Border Patrol Sector, said. “

 

The 1,000th arrest was a Trinidad national, Troy Antonio Baldeo, who was in the U.S. illegally on an expired visa. His criminal history in the U.S. dates to 2015, when he attempted to evade prosecution on the child sex offense charges. CBP officers arrested him in December 2015 at JFK International Airport in New York as he attempted to board a flight to Trinidad and Tobago. He was extradited to Hillsborough County and convicted in 2016, the same year his nonimmigrant visa expired.

 

After he was released from prison last December, he wasn’t deported. He moved to Baltimore, Maryland, then returned to Florida where he was arrested this month, CBP said. He remains in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody and is being processed for removal.

 

Other recent notable Tampa Station Border Patrol child sex offender arrests include a Mexican national and confirmed Sureños 13 gang member and a Venezuelan national and confirmed South American Theft Group member. The Venezuelan was convicted of grand theft and three counts of larceny - grand yheft, CBP said. Florida law enforcement officers have been arresting SATG members statewide, including those who are targeting minority small business owners, The Center Square reported.

 

Other notable child sex offender arrests include a Micronesia national convicted of charges for “Use of Computer Services for Lewd and Lascivious and Out of State Transmission of Harmful Material to a Minor” and a fugitive wanted by Venezuelan officials for financial crimes.

 

The station’s arrest milestone puts them “well ahead of their 2025 pace for apprehending criminal aliens,” Briggs said. Last year, they recorded their 1,000th child sex offender apprehension last August. They also finished the year with 1,229 apprehensions of child sex offenders, he said.

 

The Miami Sector is one of the busiest in the country. It covers four southeastern states, not just south Florida, including all of Florida, Georgia and North and South Carolina.

 

Border Patrol agents in the Miami Sector are well known for apprehending foreign nationals attempting illegal entry by sea and made a record number of arrests off Florida’s coast during the Biden administration, The Center Square reported.

 

As of April 30, agents from the sector apprehended more than 6,600 illegal foreign nationals and criminals, already surpassing last fiscal year’s total of 6,475, according to CBP data.

 

Miami Sector Border Patrol is also encouraging members of the public to report border security concerns in Florida by calling 1-877-772-8146.

In an Opinion and Order Granting Summary Disposition to Plaintiff, Court of Claims Judge Christopher P. Yates ruled in favor of longtime election integrity advocate Phani Mantravadi, Founder of Check My Vote, in his Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the Michigan Bureau of Elections.

 

The fight was over the Bureau’s sudden decision in March 2024 to begin redacting the all-important “Voting Type” column from the Qualified Voter File (QVF). This column shows whether each voter cast their ballot on Election Day (ED), Early In-Person (EV), or by Absentee ballot (A).

 

For years, this critical information was publicly available. Then, under Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, the Bureau quietly started stripping it out — claiming it was necessary to protect the “secret ballot.”

 

Judge Christopher Yates, whom Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals, wasn’t buying Benson’s story about why they need to hide the truth about the type of voting used by each voter in Michigan elections.

 

The Court ruled that the vast majority of voting-type information must be released to the public under FOIA. The judge made it crystal clear that the Bureau failed to prove any valid FOIA exemption or constitutional reason to blanket-redact this data for every voter in the entire state. He noted that limited redaction might be justified only in extremely rare cases involving very small precincts.

 

Judge Yates also rejected the Bureau’s attempt to use the FOIA privacy exemption, pointing out that voting-type information has long been considered public in Michigan and is not “information of a personal nature.”

 

In 2024, Judge Yates ruled against Jocelyn Benson in another case that was a huge win for election integrity in Michigan.

On October 6, 2020, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson told local clerks to ignore signature matching on ballot envelopes and presume all absentee ballot signatures were valid unless they differed in “multiple, significant and obvious respects” from the signature on file.

 

In the lawsuit Republican Party of Michigan v. Benson, Judge Christopher Murray ruled on March 9, 2021, AFTER THE MOST CONTESTED ELECTION IN HISTORY, that Benson’s directive was invalid.

 

The ruling today, in favor of election integrity hero, Phani Mantravadi, is just one more in a long string of election cases in recent years that courts have ruled against Jocelyn Benson and her office in their aggressive efforts to make Michigan elections less transparent and more secretive at the highest levels — while simultaneously handing over Michigan voters’ confidential information to outside leftist groups and nonprofits.

European Commission Urges Member States to Exclude Huawei and ZTE From Telecom Networks

This latest push builds on years of EU efforts to secure 5G and other telecom networks against potential risks from certain foreign suppliers.

 

The European Union first agreed on a 5G cybersecurity toolbox in January 2020.

 

The toolbox provided guidance for member states and operators on assessing risks and restricting high-risk vendors in core and accessible parts of networks.

 

In June 2023, the Commission, which is the executive branch of the EU, stated that decisions by some member states to restrict or exclude Huawei and ZTE were justified.

 

It described these companies as presenting “materially higher risks” than other 5G suppliers, mainly due to their links to third-country laws on intelligence and data security.

 

On Jan. 20, the Commission proposed a revised Cybersecurity Act to turn many of these earlier recommendations into binding rules.

 

The proposal included measures for phasing out key components from high-risk suppliers in mobile networks, with operators potentially given around 36 months to comply.

 

China has criticized the plans. Last week, Beijing threatened countermeasures if the rules were applied in what it said was a discriminatory manner.

 

China’s commerce ministry warned of possible investigations into European companies and reciprocal actions.

 

The EU has said its measures are based on objective security assessments and are not aimed at any single country.

 

Several member states have already limited the use of Huawei and ZTE equipment, but progress varies.

 

Sweden and the Baltic states have introduced full bans, while Germany is phasing out the two Chinese vendors. High replacement costs are slowing down full removal in some countries.

 

Revised rules would still need approval by EU governments and the European Parliament before becoming law.

 

The Commission has stressed that telecom networks carry sensitive data and support essential services such as emergency calls and financial transactions.

Reducing reliance on high-risk suppliers is seen as a way to protect against possible cyberattacks or espionage.

China Orders Firms to Defy U.S. Sanctions in Escalation Over Iran Oil Trade

By Bloomberg News (Bloomberg) — China has ordered its companies to ignore US sanctions, an unprecedented act of defiance that threatens to trap a vast banking sector in the crossfire as tension rises between the world’s largest economies.

 

Beijing has often railed against unilateral sanctions and pronounced them illegitimate, but it has also quietly allowed its largest companies to comply with them, in order to avoid blowback on its own economy and to preserve access to the US financial system.

 

Saturday’s announcement — coming before a long-awaited meeting later this month between President Donald Trump and his counterpart Xi Jinping — signals a far more aggressive stance. Beijing has now directed companies not to abide by US sanctions on private refiners linked to the Iranian oil trade, including heavyweight Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refinery Co. which was sanctioned last month.

 

Within China, state media outlets and academics who advise the government sought to frame the retaliation as a forceful but calibrated response against US overreach. A commentary on the People’s Daily app, the Communist Party mouthpiece, called it “a pivotal step” in using the legal instrument to restrain what it called the “long-arm jurisdiction” of the US.

 

Beijing’s move will test the US sanctions system at a time when it’s already under pressure, as Washington vacillates on curbs against Russia, Venezuela and Iran. With Trump’s war against Iran straining its global alliances, China has seized the opportunity to defend a major piece of its economic system while expanding its arsenal of economic weapons.

 

Xi’s government has been progressively cranking up the use of alternative tools, from rare earths to technology. Beijing last week blocked Meta Platforms Inc.’s $2 billion purchase of AI startup Manus, moving to scuttle the deal even after it had already been sealed.

 

China is deploying a blocking measure introduced in 2021 that was aimed at protecting its firms from foreign laws it deemed unjustified. The refiners — including Hengli, and several other privately-owned processors — had been facing asset freezes and transaction bans.

 

China’s private processors have shown themselves more willing to run the gauntlet of US sanctions, making the most of discounted oil from Iran, Russia and Venezuela. Though the sector includes some heavyweights, like Hengli, it is typically less dependent on the US financial system than large state refiners. The biggest players do, however, have close links with China’s major state-owned lenders.

 

Workarounds for banks can include transactions in the yuan, which makes them less visible to US authorities. Under the blocking order, companies can also apply for exemption from the rules and may be granted approval if they show that compliance would cause exceptional hardship or inconvenience.

 

“Judging by its specific provisions, the prohibition order primarily targets the concrete US sanctions imposed on particular Chinese firms,” Ji Wenhua, a law professor who’s advised the Commerce Ministry, wrote in an opinion piece for the state-run Economic Daily. “Its central objective is to nullify their legal effect within Chinese territory, rather than simultaneously resorting to more aggressive retaliatory measures.”

 

The US measures unlawfully restrict normal trade with third countries and breach international norms, the country’s Commerce Ministry said in a statement on Saturday. It banned recognition, enforcement, and compliance with the sanctions aimed at the five companies.

 

“The Chinese government has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that lack authorization from the United Nations and a basis in international law,” the department said.

 

While the blocking measure is not likely to derail the Xi-Trump summit, Washington’s reaction to it will indicate if the matter escalates, according to analysts from Eurasia Group.

 

“The refineries primarily work with Chinese banks that have not yet been directly sanctioned,” the analysts led by Dominic Chiu wrote in a note. “If the US extends secondary sanctions to those institutions, or major state-owned entities, Beijing would likely respond with more forceful countermeasures.”Play Video

DOJ Sues Minnesota to Block Climate Lawsuit Targeting Energy Companies

Federal lawyers said Minnesota is using consumer-protection laws to regulate greenhouse gas emissions beyond its borders.

 

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is suing Minnesota over the state’s own climate lawsuit against major energy companies.

 

The complaint, filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, accuses state officials of trying to impose their own climate policies on domestic energy producers in a way the DOJ says burdens national energy development and intrudes on federal authority.

 

The underlying lawsuit was filed in 2020 by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison against Exxon Mobil, the American Petroleum Institute, Koch Industries, and Koch subsidiary Flint Hills Resources. Minnesota brought the case under state consumer-protection laws, alleging that the companies engaged in fraud and deceptive business practices by misleading the public about “climate change and the role of fossil-fuel products in climate change.”

That lawsuit remains pending after years of procedural fights over whether it belongs in state or federal court. Minnesota succeeded in keeping the case in state court in 2024, after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review a lower-court ruling allowing the lawsuit to proceed there.

 

In its new complaint, the DOJ argues that authority over national energy policy and major questions involving greenhouse gas emissions rests with the federal government, not individual states. The department is asking the court to block Minnesota from pursuing the 2020 lawsuit and prevent the state from bringing similar litigation in the future.

 

“Climate change lawsuits, like Minnesota’s, artfully plead around federal law while transparently seeking to change national energy policy related to global greenhouse gas emissions and to regulate conduct beyond local borders,” the complaint states.

 

The federal government’s move to counter climate litigation with its own lawsuit follows an executive order issued last year by President Donald Trump, who directed the DOJ to “take all appropriate action to stop” state lawsuits seeking to “dictate national energy policy.”

“President Trump promised to unleash American energy dominance, and Minnesota officials cannot undermine his directive by mandating that their woke climate preferences become the uniform policy of our Nation,” Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward said in a statement.

Ellison, who is named as a defendant in the DOJ lawsuit, pledged to seek dismissal of what his office called a “frivolous and meritless” case.

 

“In 2020, I sued Big Oil for lying to Minnesotans about the true causes of climate change, then sticking us with the bill for the harms it is causing,” Ellison said in a statement. “Six years later, we are still waiting to go to trial because Big Oil has pulled every procedural trick in the book to delay facing the consequences of their unlawful actions.”

 

Minnesota is among a number of states and local governments that have turned to consumer-protection, public-nuisance, and similar laws to sue major oil and gas companies over the climate impact of their products. Those lawsuits generally accuse the companies of misleading the public about climate risks while seeking to hold them financially responsible for infrastructure costs, natural disaster- or health care-related costs, and other damages.

 

The DOJ has taken aim at several such efforts. Last year, it filed preemptive lawsuits against Hawaii and Michigan, though both were dismissed by federal judges. Separate DOJ challenges to New York and Vermont’s laws, which seek to impose penalties tied to past greenhouse gas emissions to fund disaster relief and climate-related projects, remain pending.

 

Allowing individual states to use courts to advance climate goals, the Trump administration argued, would create a patchwork of conflicting regulations and interfere with the executive branch’s authority over national energy security and interstate commerce.

 

“When states target or discriminate against out-of-state energy producers by imposing significant barriers to interstate and international trade, American energy suffers,” Trump’s executive order stated.

US Supreme Court Allows Louisiana Redistricting Ruling to Take Effect Immediately

The ruling came after Louisiana delayed May 16 primary elections to give it time to replace the unconstitutional map the court struck down last week.

 

The U.S. Supreme Court late on May 4 took the unusual step of making its recent ruling to limit the use of race in redistricting effective ahead of the usual 32-day waiting period.

 

The new procedural ruling allows the high court’s landmark April 29 decision in Louisiana v. Callais to take effect immediately. In that case, the court struck down as unconstitutional a congressional map for Louisiana that included a second black-majority district.

There are fewer than 32 days between April 29 and the first U.S. House primary elections that were scheduled for May 16, so if the waiting period were not waived, the primaries would have had to take place using the very same map the Supreme Court deemed unconstitutional.

 

The Supreme Court’s new move might undermine challenges to an April 30 decision by Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican, to postpone the state’s U.S. House primary elections and seek a new electoral map that complies with the U.S. Constitution. The first primary had been scheduled for May 16, with a second set for June 27.

In the Supreme Court’s new, unsigned opinion, the justices said the clerk of the court “ordinarily waits 32 days after the entry of the Court’s judgment to send the opinion and a certified copy of the judgment to the clerk of the lower court.”

Justice Samuel Alito wrote a concurring opinion, saying, “there is good reason to depart from the default rule here.”

 

“The need for prompt action by this Court is clear,” Alito wrote in an opinion joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch.

 

“The date scheduled for the beginning of early voting in the primary election has already passed. The congressional districting map enacted by the legislature has been held to be unconstitutional, and the general election will be held in just six months.”

 

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson filed a dissenting opinion.

“The Court’s decision in these cases has spawned chaos in the State of Louisiana,” Jackson wrote.

 

“By my count, we have granted an application to issue the judgment forthwith over a party’s objection only twice in the last 25 years,” she wrote.

 

“To avoid the appearance of partiality here, we could, as per usual, opt to stay on the sidelines and take no position by applying our default procedures. But, today, the Court chooses the opposite. Not content to have decided the law, it now takes steps to influence its implementation.”

Alberta separatist group says it has enough signatures to trigger referendum vote on leaving Canada

 

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Alberta separatists said Monday they have formally submitted almost 302,000 signatures to try to trigger a referendum on the province leaving Canada.

 

The group needed 178,000 signatures to force the province to consider such a vote.

 

The question of separation could go on a provincewide ballot as early as October, as Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has said she would move forward if enough names are gathered and verified. Smith has said she personally does not support the oil-rich province leaving Canada.

 

A yes vote would not trigger independence automatically. Negotiations with the federal government would have to take place and Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal, said some Indigenous groups who are already using the courts to prevent an independence referendum would use venues including the courts to stop independence from happening.

 

Mitch Sylvestre, the head of Stay Free Alberta, arrived at the Elections Alberta office in Edmonton on Monday leading a convoy of seven trucks to deliver the names.

 

“This day is historic in Alberta history,” Sylvestre said. “It’s the first step to the next step — we’ve gotten by Round 3 and now we’re in the Stanley Cup final.”

 

He said most papers were handled five times to verify the signatures.

 

More than 300 supporters gathered, waving the provincial flag and chanting “Alberta strong.”

 

However, the petition could face another hurdle this week as an Edmonton, Alberta judge is expected to rule on a court challenge launched by a group of Alberta First Nations who say Alberta separation would violate treaty rights.

 

Smith has accused previous federal Liberal governments of introducing legislation that hamstrings Alberta’s ability to produce and export oil, which she said has cost the province billions of dollars. She also said she doesn’t want the federal government meddling in provincial issues.

 

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s federal government did not immediately respond to the development.

 

Béland, the political science professor at McGill, said a referendum is likely to lose.

 

“Right now, support for independence in Alberta is rather low. Less than 30% and much lower if we only focus on hard core supporters. And the odds of a victory of the pro-independence camp appear to be low at this stage,” he said.

 

Béland also said considering recent news of a large data breach involving an Alberta separatist group, the formal verification process is especially crucial to make sure the signatures are authentic.

 

“Mark Carney is indeed popular, even in Alberta. The push for independence by some Albertans predates his prime ministership and it’s related to economic, fiscal, and political grievances about the seemingly unfair treatment of Alberta by the federal government,” he said. “These concerns increased during the Justin Trudeau years but they have peaked and even declined since he left office.”

Maersk Ship Exits Hormuz Under U.S. Protection

Maersk has confirmed that one of the vessels involved in Monday’s U.S.-escorted transits of the Strait of Hormuz was its U.S.-flagged roll-on/roll-off ship Alliance Fairfax, marking one of the clearest tests so far of Washington’s effort to reopen the waterway.

 

In a statement, A.P. Moller–Maersk said the vessel—operated by Farrell Lines, a subsidiary of Maersk Line Limited—successfully exited the Persian Gulf on May 4 “under U.S. military protection,” completing the transit “without incident” with all crew safe.

 

The ship had been effectively stranded in the Gulf since the outbreak of conflict between the United States and Iran in late February, when shipping through the strait largely collapsed amid missile, drone, and mine threats.

 

“MLL was contacted by the U.S. military and offered the opportunity for the vessel to exit the Gulf under U.S. military protection,” Maersk said in a statement to gCaptain. “Following the development and coordination of a comprehensive security plan with the U.S. military, MLL’s shore side and shipboard leadership approved the transit. The vessel subsequently exited the Persian Gulf accompanied by U.S. military assets.”

 

The confirmation aligns with earlier U.S. Central Command claims that two American-flagged merchant vessels had transited the strait as part of the Trump administration’s “Project Freedom” effort to guide stranded ships out of the Gulf. The identification of the second vessel is not yet known.

 

“Maersk extends its gratitude to the U.S. military for its professionalism and effective coordination in making this operation possible, and the company looks forward to the ALLIANCE FAIRFAX returning to its normal commercial service,” Maersk added.

 

The ALLIANCE FAIRFAX was among five U.S.-flagged ships known to be in the Persian Gulf when the conflict began. All of the vessels are enrolled in either the U.S. Maritime Security Program (MSP) or the Tanker Security Program (TSP)–two critical U.S. government-backed initiatives designed to ensure a ready fleet of commercially operated vessels available for military logistics in times of crisis.

 

Project Freedom Launched

President Donald Trump announced the initiative, dubbed Project Freedom, on Sunday, framing it as a humanitarian mission to assist “neutral and innocent” ships trapped in the strait amid months of escalating conflict.

 

“Countries from all over the world… have asked the United States if we could help free up their ships,” Trump said, adding that many vessels are running low on food and essential supplies.

 

Despite the renewed pressure to reopen the Strait, shipping groups warning that the broader risk picture remains largely unchanged.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger left the door open to imposing taxes on services like gym memberships, digital subscriptions and dog grooming when asked about the possibility during a recent interview.

 

"I think every idea, as long as it’s reasonable and makes some amount of sense, should be discussed," Spanberger told a local ABC affiliate.

 

"I think there are worthy conversations to be had about what revenue generation looks like into the future as our economy changes in so many ways."

 

The comment comes as Spanberger tries to leave the door open to exploring new sources of revenue for Virginia while also fending off accusations from the White House that have painted her as a tax-happy Democrat.

 

"So sad! She is adding so many taxes: a food and beverage tax, digital services tax, utilities tax and more. People are leaving that would never have even thought of doing so!" Trump said in a post to Truth Social.

 

"This went from a thriving and powerful place to a commonwealth run by a person who has no concept of low taxes and economic strength."

 

Those criticisms stemmed from a handful of bills introduced in the Virginia state legislature that, if implemented, would extend taxes to: storage facilities, counseling, dry cleaning, vehicle repair, website design, data storage and digital subscription storage.

 

The bills, which were first introduced by lawmakers during the tenure of Spanberger’s predecessor, Gov. Glenn Youngkin, never reached the floor of the General Assembly for a vote before the end of the state’s legislative session on March 14.

Diana Shipping has taken its takeover fight for Genco Shipping & Trading straight to shareholders, launching a tender offer to acquire the US-listed bulker owner for $23.50 per share in cash after months of failed engagement with the board.

 

The Athens-based owner, which already holds about 14.8% of Genco, said the offer values the target at a roughly 31% premium to its undisturbed share price and is fully financed, removing execution risk from the deal.

 

The bid is set to run until early June, unless extended. If successful, Diana plans to follow up with a second-step merger to acquire any remaining shares at the same price.

 

The latest step ramps up a takeover battle that has been running since late last year, with Genco repeatedly rejecting earlier approaches.

 

Diana chief executive Semiramis Paliou stated that the company had spent five months attempting to engage with Genco’s board on a fully financed, all-cash proposal, but had received no meaningful response. She argued that taking the offer directly to shareholders was now the only route to progress the transaction.

 

“The Genco board has refused every attempt — not a single meeting, not a single phone call — and has not responded to the merger agreement we delivered,” she said.

 

The offer was initially pitched at $20.60 per share in November before being raised to $23.50 in March. Diana maintained that the latest bid reflects full net asset value at a time when vessel prices are near cyclical highs, offering shareholders an immediate exit at levels the stock has historically struggled to reach. Genco currently trades at around $24.50 per share.

 

To support the acquisition, Diana has secured $1.43bn in committed financing from a group of banks, including DNB, Nordea, BNP Paribas, Standard Chartered, Deutsche Bank and Danske Bank.

 

In tandem with the takeover push, the company has lined up a deal with fellow bulker heavyweight Star Bulk Carriers to sell 16 of Genco’s vessels for $470.5m in cash upon completion, a move that would help reshape the combined fleet and manage leverage following the takeover.

 

Diana argued that the cash offer compares favourably to Genco’s dividend profile, noting that it would take more than a decade of payouts at recent levels for shareholders to match the value on the table today.

 

The offer is conditional on several factors, including the signing of a merger agreement, shareholder acceptance of a majority of shares, and the removal or neutralisation of Genco’s shareholder rights plan, which Diana has criticised as a barrier preventing investors from freely tendering their holdings.

 

Alongside the bid, Diana has also nominated six independent directors to Genco’s board, signalling that it is prepared to pursue governance changes if the current standoff continues.

Last week, I was unexpectedly hit with a post-lockdown trauma response.

 

While driving to a baseball game days before the NFL Draft came to Pittsburgh, I passed a digital highway sign instructing me to avoid nonessential travel.

 

Suddenly, memories of empty highways with signs instructing drivers to “Stay Safe and Stay Home” came flooding back to me.

 

As the week developed, it began to occur to me that the parallels were deeper than my subjective emotional response.

 

Road closures intensified, rendering my beloved city of Pittsburgh less and less functional.

 

Even sidewalks were closed.

 

Entire parking garages were emptied and abandoned.

 

Pittsburgh’s “most visited museum,” the Kamin Science Center, has been closed to the public for weeks because it was within the footprint of the upcoming event.

 

For the actual days of the draft, Pittsburgh Public Schools were shuttered as if a blizzard had rendered travel impossible.

 

How do I walk to PNC Park?

 

The attempt by local officials to trigger hysteria in the populace worked, maybe too well. People traveling to Pittsburgh for the event heeded the instructions to use the special free public transit to make their way in. Parking operators, expecting a huge windfall, saw themselves lower their exorbitant prices midday. For example, the Rivers Casino quickly abandoned their plan to charge $250 per day, lowering their rate to $100 for the first day of the draft and then abandoning charging altogether for subsequent days.

 

Local businesses outside the official footprint of the event were told to prepare for heavy crowds, but instead experienced a weekend worse than anything they had seen since the Covid hysteria. Those who didn’t want to go to the draft were terrified to go anywhere near the city.

 

In summary, children were deprived of education, small business owners were drastically harmed, public spaces which exist for the common good were shuttered, and normal life ceased for those who actually live in the City of Pittsburgh. While all of this was happening, local politicians were patting themselves on the back for how well everything was pulled off, taking pride that this draft broke attendance records for the NFL and that their plans of getting people in and out of the city were effective. It was our own personal Operation Warp Speed.

 

I think there’s a lesson here that applies not merely to Pittsburgh politics but also to the wider dysfunction we see in elected officials throughout what used to be Western Civilization.

 

Our political leaders view their own constituents with a sort of boredom or indifference. In the leadup to the draft, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania engaged in a number of public works projects designed to improve the area in preparation for the draft.

 

Suddenly, our governments remembered that potholes aren’t supposed to be allowed to exist and that crime isn’t supposed to be allowed to happen. For three days, Pittsburgh had a heavily subsidized and highly functional public transit system, something that hasn’t existed the entirety of my lifetime.

 

Any one of these projects could have been accomplished at any time, but the actual people who live there provided insufficient motivation for our leaders. Rather, what really mattered to them was looking good in front of millionaires, soon-to-be millionaires, and the powerful elites who would gather to party the night away with Nelly, Steve Aoki, and 2 Chainz.

The sooner we recognize this hard truth—that there’s no military solution to the conflict with Iran—the better off the United States will be.

Ramsey County is hiring new (not replacement) positions all the time. Every time you turn around they have some new department, management structure, libtard program they are implementing. The ICE crackdown (that Trump ran away from) created new teams to deal with response to federal enforcement and community support and there is never an end to new climate initiatives that they hire health educators (climate propogandists) for. I do not have personal knowledge of Hennepin county, but given most of the ICE activity was over there and Hennepin is 10 times a crazy as Ramsey, it would be hard to see how they would not be doing the same. Ramsey county went from 1 layer of management between front line workers and the county manager 4 to 6 layers of management in the last 6 years, and that proliferation of bureaucracy has not slowed since Trump came back into office.

So regardless of what Trump says, it is not 100% of new jobs are in the private sector. Yes the federal government has shrunk, but State and Local governments are picking up some of the slack creating jobs to back fill what they see as essential services and loading the cost onto local property taxes. In Ramsey county property taxes went up over 10% this year alone because Ramsey will not allow any of their social programs to lapse due to federal spending cuts. Sure they are going to run the county into the ground, but it is going to be a blood bath for everyone who lives here, not just the libs who cheat to stay in power and no one can do anything about because the courts and local and federal law enforcement will protect their crimes, electoral and otherwise.
