In classrooms across America today, too many young people are being taught to view their country not as a force for good, but as a source of injustice. The heroes of history are recast as villains. National pride is replaced by shame. The result is not a generation prepared to lead a free people, but one too often uncertain whether America is a nation worth defending at all.

That uncertainty would have deeply troubled George Washington. In his farewell address, he urged the American people to “guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism” and warned that narrow interests and factionalism could erode the unity essential to the survival of the Republic. Washington understood that the success of this great experiment in liberty would depend not only on our institutions, but on the character and convictions of the American people.

In the twentieth century, the United States helped liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny and Asia from imperial domination. We defeated the menace of global communism in a long and bitter Cold War. These were not the actions of a perfect nation. They were the actions of a good nation, full of decent and kind people, who chose to use their strength to expand the reach of liberty in the world.

We must also teach, with honesty and humility, the chapters of our history that fall short of our ideals. But the defining feature of our nation is not simply that we tolerated injustices for a time, but that Americans fought — often at great cost — to overcome them. We are a nation that waged a war against itself to vindicate the truth that all men are created equal, and then labored for generations more to ensure that promise would be fulfilled.

As a visiting professor at both George Mason University and Grove City College, I have seen firsthand both the challenges and the promise of the next generation. I have met students who arrive with only a faint understanding of the Constitution. But I have also seen something deeply encouraging: when young Americans are introduced to the story of our nation in its fullness, they respond with genuine admiration, gratitude, and even a renewed sense of purpose.

They want to believe in their country. They want to be part of something greater than themselves. And when we give them an education that is honest, rigorous, and rooted in the truth, they are more than ready to rise to that calling.

The stakes of this effort could not be higher. We are living in a time of renewed global competition, as authoritarian powers like China seek to expand their influence and offer the world an alternative vision to the principles of freedom and self-government. In such a world, a people who lose confidence in their own ideals will struggle to defend them abroad. A nation that forgets why it is free will not remain free for long.

Patriotic education, rightly understood, is therefore not only a domestic imperative — it is a national security necessity. It forms citizens who understand what is at stake, who appreciate the blessings of liberty, and who are prepared to defend them for future generations.

Encouragingly, there are signs of renewal. Across the country, families, educators, and some local schools are working to restore robust civic education to the American classroom. Homeschooling communities, classical Christian schools, and institutions like Hillsdale College are leading the way, developing a K–12 curriculum that emphasizes the principles and history that have made America a beacon of hope to the world. Quietly and faithfully, many individual teachers in classrooms across the nation are doing the same.

These efforts remind us that the future of American education, like the fate of our nation itself, is not fixed. It will be determined by the choices we make today.

The Bible tells us that a house built on sand will not stand, but a house built on the rock will endure. The same is true of a nation. A civic education that teaches young people to reject their own country rests on the most fragile of foundations. But an education that instills a well-ordered love of country is a house built on a rock.

As G. K. Chesterton wrote, “Men did not love Rome because she was great. She was great because they had loved her.”

If we would preserve the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity, we must begin by teaching the next generation to love this land we call home.

I take it this means I am not leaving.

Note I am happy to turn over things when they knock so on to do so. I believe they will take possession of things not because of anything bad on my part but to move me from being harassed and in danger do this stuff going on in all respects of things.

This is where it is to large of a security risk to take me to areas of gang and cartel likely are heavy in and it is just why would anyone do this take someone to where they have enforcers where they have people that are more likely to be dirty so to speak in some manner of speaking.

So that is the reality of this now.

I can see them meeting with me and like asking about things or so on but I am not going to an area that has cartel or gangs that are knowing to be loyal to them at this extent. This is not just semi in areas this is the heart and the likely the closest in areas to center of bad influence that they can get me I believe like cartel and gangs.

So what world does taking someone that is one of the most important figures in things to an are with more cartel and gangs so on ups the chance of being killed.

MS 13 is is around in that area they maybe found film in stores so on that I visited there where tattoos of 13 and other thing on faces so on and in many areas and ways around me.

I do not want to go to an area that the cartel so on is likely talking to these gangs so on in any way.

This is now how this is.

They do not have the right or ability to extort you to leave your home job or other things in some way.

Trump administration launches largest-ever effort to denaturalize U.S. citizens accused of fraud or other crimes

The Trump administration on Monday announced it is seeking to revoke the citizenship of 17 U.S. citizens accused of immigration fraud, expanding its unprecedented denaturalization campaign.

CBS News exclusively reported about the plans before they were unveiled by the Justice Department.

Officials said the move represents the largest-ever effort by the U.S. government to use its denaturalization powers, which were rarely invoked before President Trump returned to the White House last year with promises to launch a historic deportation blitz. Between 1990 and 2017, the Justice Department filed an average of just 11 legal complaints per year seeking to denaturalize American citizens, historical figures indicate.

Federal law has long allowed the government to try to denaturalize foreign-born U.S. citizens who officials believe committed fraud to obtain their citizenship, such as by concealing information, like criminal conduct, on their immigration applications. But the process has been historically lengthy, complex and seldom exercised, requiring officials to persuade judges to strip naturalized citizens of their citizenship in civil or criminal proceedings in federal court.

The Trump administration has sought to vastly escalate denaturalization efforts as part of its larger crackdown on illegal and legal immigration. In 2025, the Justice Department broadened the categories of naturalized citizens who should be prioritized for denaturalization.Last month, officials announced a dozen denaturalization cases, at the time the largest such effort in years.

Some of the 17 citizens targeted in the latest denaturalization campaign were convicted of violent or serious crimes, including sex offenses against children. Others were convicted of fraud crimes or accused of committing immigration fraud.

In federal court complaints filed across the country in recent days, Justice Department officials argued that the individuals concealed their criminal activity when they applied for U.S. citizenship or were otherwiseineligible to be naturalized, including because they lacked a "good moral character," one of the requirements in the naturalization process.

Trump administration launches largest-ever effort to denaturalize U.S. citizens accused of fraud or other crimes

The Trump administration on Monday announced it is seeking to revoke the citizenship of 17 U.S. citizens accused of immigration fraud, expanding its unprecedented denaturalization campaign.

CBS News exclusively reported about the plans before they were unveiled by the Justice Department.

Officials said the move represents the largest-ever effort by the U.S. government to use its denaturalization powers, which were rarely invoked before President Trump returned to the White House last year with promises to launch a historic deportation blitz. Between 1990 and 2017, the Justice Department filed an average of just 11 legal complaints per year seeking to denaturalize American citizens, historical figures indicate.

Federal law has long allowed the government to try to denaturalize foreign-born U.S. citizens who officials believe committed fraud to obtain their citizenship, such as by concealing information, like criminal conduct, on their immigration applications. But the process has been historically lengthy, complex and seldom exercised, requiring officials to persuade judges to strip naturalized citizens of their citizenship in civil or criminal proceedings in federal court.

The Trump administration has sought to vastly escalate denaturalization efforts as part of its larger crackdown on illegal and legal immigration. In 2025, the Justice Department broadened the categories of naturalized citizens who should be prioritized for denaturalization.Last month, officials announced a dozen denaturalization cases, at the time the largest such effort in years.

Some of the 17 citizens targeted in the latest denaturalization campaign were convicted of violent or serious crimes, including sex offenses against children. Others were convicted of fraud crimes or accused of committing immigration fraud.

In federal court complaints filed across the country in recent days, Justice Department officials argued that the individuals concealed their criminal activity when they applied for U.S. citizenship or were otherwiseineligible to be naturalized, including because they lacked a "good moral character," one of the requirements in the naturalization process.

Ukrainian drone hits Moscow-Crimea passenger train – governor

A Ukrainian UAV attack on a passenger train in Crimea has left one person dead and another injured, regional Governor Sergey Aksyonov has said.

The train was traveling between Moscow and Simferopol when the locomotive was hit by an “enemy drone,” Aksyonov wrote on Telegram early Monday.

“According to preliminary information, the train driver was injured, the assistant driver was killed, and none of the passengers were hurt,” he said.

Aksyonov expressed condolences to the friends and family of the deceased crew member and wished the injured driver a speedy recovery.

Bus transportation for the train’s passengers is currently being arranged, Aksyonov said, adding that the authorities will provide all necessary assistance.

Following the incident, operator Grand Service Express temporarily suspended services in Crimea, adding that all passengers on its trains on the peninsula were evacuated.

The attack comes days after eight people were killed and 11 others injured in a Ukrainian strike on a passenger bus traveling from Moscow to Simferopol through the Donetsk People’s Republic on Wednesday.

On Thursday, a Ukrainian UAV struck a suburban train traveling between Azovskoye and Kerch, Crimea, leaving one passenger dead and several others injured.

Moscow previously warned that it would carry out “systematic and consistent strikes” on Ukraine’s military infrastructure, including drone production facilities, command posts, and “decision-making centers,” in response to Kiev’s terrorist attacks.

These included an attack on a college dormitory in the town of Starobelsk in the Lugansk People’s Republic, which killed 21 people, mostly teenage girls, and injured 70 others.

Last week, Russian forces launched another large-scale missile and drone barrage, targeting defense industry sites in Kiev, parts of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, as well as locations in Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, and Sumy Regions, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Trump border czar vows New York ICE surge: 'It's coming'

NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) – The Trump administration has drawn up a plan to surge US Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel to New York City, a move that threatens to escalate tensions with Governor Kathy Hochul over the president’s migrant crackdown.

President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, said Monday he’d warned Hochul of the surge before she signed a bill late last month curbing operations and banning masked ICE agents in her state.

“You’re going to see more ICE than you’ve ever seen in New York City, and it’s coming,” Homan said on Fox. “I just reviewed an operational plan.

I’m not going to tell you exactly when it’s going to happen, but it’s coming.”

A Ukrainian long-range FP-1 drone struck infrastructure at Russia’s Protasovo airfield in the Ryazan region, according to materials published by the Telegram channel Dossier of a Spy and geolocation analysis released by Dnipro OSINT on June 8.

According to Dnipro OSINT, the strike targeted hangars associated with a research and production center involved in the development and manufacture of unmanned aerial vehicles operating on the airfield’s territory.

The extent of the damage has not been independently confirmed.

Geolocation analysis published by Dnipro OSINT compared footage of the strike with satellite imagery of Protasovo airfield.

According to the analysis, visible landmarks, aircraft parking areas, and hangar structures in the video matched locations on the airfield. Additional imagery published by the analyst showed the drone’s likely flight path toward the hangar area near the runway.

Video circulated by Dossier of a Spy appears to show a drone flying over the airfield before an explosion near several hangars. A voice heard in the footage says, “It hit the drone operators.”

According to reports cited by Dnipro OSINT, the attack was carried out using a Ukrainian-made FP-1 long-range strike drone developed by Fire Point. The target is located more than 500 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The FP-1 was publicly unveiled by Ukraine’s Ministry of Strategic Industries in 2025. EU ambassador reiterates Libya’s sovereign right to control its borders

The European Union’s ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, has reiterated that the EU does not support the resettlement of irregular migrants or refugees in Libya, rejecting what he described as ongoing misinformation campaigns surrounding the issue.

In a post on X following a meeting with Libya’s acting Foreign Minister, Taher Al-Baour, Orlando stressed that Libya, like all sovereign states, has the right to determine who may legally enter its territory and to cooperate with regional and international partners in combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

His remarks come amid growing public concern over migration issues in Libya and follow protests in Tripoli against what demonstrators described as plans to settle migrants in the country. Protesters blocked the entrance to the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Al-Sarraj area with earth barriers, while others breached the outer perimeter of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya headquarters in Janzour.

The acting foreign minister also said Libyan authorities, working alongside the International Organization for Migration and UNHCR, have facilitated the return or relocation of more than 30,000 migrants. Of that total, around 9,000 were processed through UNHCR programmes.

Trump Admin Provided No Defensive Action For Israel Amid Iranian Missile Salvo

In this latest round of trading major blows, President Trump reportedly not only told Israel to immediately halt its response and to not retaliate, but gave no order for US forces to protect Israel, for example by manning and operating crucial anti-air defenses.

While Iranian ballistic missiles were inbound, "The US military didn't take part in the Israeli attacks against Iran, the first since the ceasefire, and the Trump admin didn't order any US defensive action to shield Israel from incoming Iranian missiles, per a US official" - according to CBS White House correspondent Jennifer Jacobs.

If accurate, this marks a major change in US priorities and the Pentagon's posture in the region. Going back to last year's 11-day June war, as well as from the start of Operation Epic Fury, Washington has previously provided consistent cover and protection for Israel, especially on the anti-air defense front.

The notable change and shift is also being reported by NBC, which writes Monday morning, "The U.S. military did not conduct any strikes against Iran with Israel, according to a U.S. official."

"The U.S. did not shoot down or intercept any incoming Iranian missiles or projectiles during this recent volley between Israel and Iran," the report continues. "And the current U.S. assessment is that Iran was not targeting any U.S. personnel, assets, or locations during the strikes directed at Israel, the official said."

US Central Command (CENTCOM) has however, affirmed it has been in contact with senior Israeli military officials, presumably to receive updates and briefings on the Iranian attacks of the prior 24 hours, as well as related to the latest on Israeli offensive actions.

While Washington is creating distance between itself and this renewed round of fighting, Iranian officials aren't buying the narrative.

In a fresh message from Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, Tehran says that "Without a doubt … the actions of the Zionist regime in the region cannot be separated from U.S. policies." Tehran is rejecting the US insistence that it is not behind Israel's actions: "No one believes that the Zionist regime would carry out any action without prior coordination and cooperation with the United States," Baqaei added.

Meanwhile, President Trump declared in a Financial Times interview published on Sunday - "I call the shots" regarding actions against Iran, and not Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "won't have any choice" but to accept an impending agreement between the US and Iran, Trump stated.

French prosecutors have been ordered to review all ongoing complaints involving violence against minors after the murder of an 11-year-old girl exposed major failures in the justice system.

Last week, police discovered the body of a girl named Lyhanna in an abandoned grain silo in southwestern France shortly after she disappeared near Fleurance. Authorities have since arrested 41-year-old Jerome B., whose daughter went to the same school as Lyhanna, as the primary suspect.

The case has sparked nationwide outrage after it emerged that Jerome B. had faced multiple allegations of sexual violence, including against minors, but was never convicted, with the cases either dropped, dismissed, or left unresolved.

Following public anger, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin announced on Monday that French prosecutors have been given until July 14 to examine all 70,000 ongoing formal complaints involving child victims, designating it as an “absolute priority.”

Darmanin has described the case as a “terrible failure” by the state and the justice system, saying in a public apology on Friday that the judiciary had failed Lyhanna’s family and promising an inspection report within 15 days.

The minister has convened France’s chief prosecutors in Paris, stating disciplinary action could follow if failures are identified, ranging from reprimands to dismissals.

French President Emmanuel Macron has also condemned what he called “unacceptable” lapses in the justice system and asked the government to determine what went wrong.

Around 6,000 people joined a silent march in Lyhanna’s hometown of Fleurance on Sunday, while child protection and feminist groups have called for demonstrations outside courts and the Justice Ministry, with some critics calling for Darmanin’s resignation.

Officials, however, have urged against making the judiciary the sole scapegoat for broader institutional failures. Frederic Chevallier, president of the National Conference of Public Prosecutors, pointed to chronic staffing problems, noting that France has roughly three prosecutors per 100,000 inhabitants.

According to the French Interior Ministry, minors accounted for nearly 58% of all sexual violence victims recorded last year.

SECOND case of flesh-eating parasite that devours victims alive detected in US

A second case of a terrifying flesh-eating parasite has been detected in the United States.

The New World Screwworm (NWS) parasite has been confirmed in Texas, invading the US for the first time since 1966.

The first case was detected on Thursday, and the US Department of Agriculture confirmed a second breakout on Friday.

'USDA has confirmed a second detection of New World Screwworm in a one-month-old calf in Zavala County, Texas - approximately 5.6 miles from the first case,' NWS Rapid Response team posted on X.

NWS are flies that lay hundreds of eggs in the wounds of animals and humans, which hatch within hours and devour their victims' tissue.

Days of intense military training exercises at empty buildings have Southern California on edge

A series of military exercises taking place in empty buildings across the Southland are scaring residents and rattling neighbors as the sound of gunfire rings out in the dark and troops descend from helicopters.

Multiple nights this week, the sounds of simulated urban warfare have erupted in the middle of the night in parts of sleepy Pasadena and Long Beach and in an empty mall in the San Gabriel Valley.

As some residents went to bed, video showed a helicopter thundering across the sky as soldiers jumped onto the roof of an empty hospital in the middle of a tree-lined residential neighborhood in Pasadena Wednesday night.

Officials have said they've been given little notice and had no say on where or when the exercises would take place.

"People are trying to sleep," said Rick Cole, a Pasadena City Council member in a video posted on Instagram late Wednesday as the training continued in the background. "This is going to go on for a while and good luck to the people who have to get up and go to work tomorrow morning."

The operation, at the vacant St. Luke Medical Center in the 2600 block of East Washington Boulevard, included simulated gunfire, flash grenades and a military helicopter that hovered over the building.

Police were told by the military about the training and asked officers to provide security around the abandoned hospital months ago, a city spokesperson told The Times. But city officials were not given details about the operation, and were not able to notify the public until hours before the training began.

"It's troubling and disappointing the federal government would not provide the leadership of this city information to share with our constituents, particularly because the same neighborhood was significantly impacted by the Eaton fire," Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo said.

Asked what the city knew before the drills, Gordo said police had been informed of activity but not the scope and significance. He noted that the drills were taking place at locations scheduled to host Olympic events.

A U.S. military officer familiar with the exercises told The Times the training involved "highly trained soldiers who operated in challenging situations and terrains and want real-life facilities.

"They don't train on the same cinder-block training facilities as other units," said the officer, who was not authorized to discuss the matter with the media.

Despite the notification to the city's Police Department, elected city officials said they received no notice about the training until just a few hours before it was set to begin.

"It was very generic information," read a statement from the city. "Minimal details were shared with the Police Department. The City notified the public a few hours before the exercise was to begin. The City had no control on the timing of the exercise or specific details. Our priority was the safety of the residents and vehicle traffic in the immediate area."

A notice was sent out to residents at 5:30 p.m., and elected council members were notified via text six minutes prior.

"How does this happen, and how come we didn't hear about it sooner?" Cole asked. "This was a war game in a residential neighborhood recently devastated by catastrophic fire that took place in a weeknight, in the middle of the night."

Cole said he's inquired why the City Council and the public were not notified earlier about the operation, which occurred at multiple Southern California cities this week.

The soldiers training in Pasadena, the officer said, were highly specialized operators who do training in Southern California and arrived at Los Alamitos. It is not uncommon for the units to train at defunct malls or abandoned businesses in Los Angeles County.

An official said the helicopter seen in the regional training was from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, or SOAR.

The war over government UFO secrecy may be entering its most explosive phase yet.

Investigative filmmaker Jeremy Corbell has issued what many are interpreting as a direct challenge to the U.S. government: either begin disclosing what officials know about alleged UFO crash retrieval programs, reverse-engineering efforts, and non-human biologics—or risk the release of what Corbell suggests could be hundreds of undisclosed files.

"David Grusch went up in front of Congress with his hand to the country, to the globe, and to whatever he believes in and he told the truth," Corbell stated.

Grusch testified under oath that he had been informed of decades-long crash retrieval and reverse-engineering programs involving technology of allegedly non-human origin. He further claimed that biological evidence associated with recovered craft existed.

To date, no publicly released evidence has independently verified those extraordinary allegations.

Nevertheless, Grusch's testimony remains one of the most significant whistleblower claims ever presented to Congress regarding unidentified anomalous phenomena, commonly known as UAPs.

Now Corbell appears to be signaling that additional evidence may exist outside official channels.

If true, the implications could be historic. But they could also be legally perilous. The legality of any potential release depends almost entirely on how the materials were obtained.

If Corbell or other journalists lawfully received documents from sources and did not participate in any unlawful acquisition, they would likely enjoy significant protections under the First Amendment.

The Supreme Court established a powerful precedent during the historical event of the Pentagon Papers, when the government attempted to block publication of classified documents concerning the Vietnam War.

The Court ultimately ruled against prior restraint, allowing publication to proceed.

That decision created one of the strongest protections for investigative journalism in American history.

In practical terms, the source who unlawfully removes classified information may face criminal consequences, while the journalist who receives and publishes the information generally occupies a different legal position.

That distinction has long served as a cornerstone of American press freedom. However, the analysis becomes far more complicated if classified information, intelligence methods, or national defense secrets are involved.

Federal prosecutors could potentially examine whether publication reveals sensitive military capabilities, intelligence collection methods, classified technologies, or information protected under national security statutes.

AI Data Centers’ Water Consumption Breaks 264 Billion Gallons in 2025 as Devastating Drought Hits Nearly 63% of U.S.

Americans across multiple states are being urged to conserve water as drought conditions intensify, reservoirs shrink, and utilities issue increasingly urgent warnings. At the same time, a different kind of consumer is quietly demanding unprecedented amounts of water: artificial intelligence.

The collision between worsening drought and the AI boom is raising alarms among environmental experts, utility operators, and local governments as hyperscale data centers consume hundreds of millions of gallons of water to cool the servers powering chatbots, image generators, and AI search tools.

According to market research firm Mordor Intelligence, nearly 1 trillion liters of water were consumed by AI data centers in 2025. That amounts to roughly 264 billion gallons for the year, or the annual water usage of 1.8 million Americans. AI data centers are currently consuming 550 million gallons of water per day. That’s roughly the same rate of water consumption as the entirety of the world’s bottled water industry.

Now, with drought conditions spreading across large portions of the country, questions are mounting about whether communities can sustain both.

While most people associate AI with cloud computing and advanced software, the technology relies on enormous physical infrastructure.

The world’s largest technology companies are racing to build massive AI-focused data centers filled with specialized processors that generate extraordinary amounts of heat. To prevent overheating, many facilities rely on evaporative cooling systems that consume vast quantities of water.

Researchers estimate that a single large data center can use millions of gallons of water every day under certain operating conditions.

In some regions, annual water consumption can reach hundreds of millions of gallons for a single facility.

As AI adoption accelerates, major technology companies including Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOG) (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Meta (META), and OpenAI have announced aggressive data center expansion plans across the United States.

The result is a rapidly growing industrial demand for water at the same moment many communities are being asked to conserve it.

Drought Conditions Are Worsening Nationwide

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, nearly 63% of the country is currently experiencing drought conditions, with large portions of the Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West facing significant dryness. Reservoirs in many regions remain below historical averages, while farmers, utilities, and local governments grapple with growing uncertainty about long-term water supplies.

“The West’s hydrology and climate are very much out of sync with the historical rhythm,” Utah Assistant State Climatologist Jon Meyer recently warned. In Colorado, State Climatologist Russ Schumacher described conditions even more bluntly, writing that the state’s mountain snowpack is in “historically bad shape.” Even Florida, a state not typically associated with severe drought, is experiencing what The Washington Post called “the worst drought in the state so far this century.”

The warning signs are becoming increasingly visible in Tennessee as well. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) recently issued a stark update on water conditions across its service area, with TVA General Manager of River Management James Everett noting that runoff levels are currently the fourth-lowest recorded in 152 years of recordkeeping. In practical terms, less rainfall and runoff means less water flowing into reservoirs, rivers, and other critical water supplies that communities depend on.

Signal, DuckDuckGo, and NordVPN threaten to exit Canada if metadata surveillance law passes

Canada's metadata retention bill is the latest government attempt to build surveillance into the internet's infrastructure

Another day, another government attempt to force tech companies to build backdoors. This time, Canada is proposing legislation that would require companies to retain certain metadata and provide law enforcement with access to it. Predictably, many tech players have sharply criticized the proposal, with some saying they would rather leave the Canadian market than comply.

The latest version of Canada's Bill C-22 would require digital services such as internet service providers, messaging platforms, email providers, and potentially hardware companies to retain up to one year of user metadata. In addition, tech companies would have to implement mechanisms that allow authorities to obtain "lawful access" to that information for criminal investigations. Critics argue the proposal amounts to another government-mandated backdoor.

During his testimony before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, Signal executive Udbhav Tiwari said Bill C-22 would turn everyday digital tools into a surveillance network. He argued that requiring companies to retain metadata about users' communications runs counter to Signal's privacy practices.

A spokesperson for DuckDuckGo also confirmed that the company would remove its VPN service from Canada if Bill C-22 passes. NordVPN and other VPN providers have made similar statements.

Apple and Google have also joined industry warnings that the legislation could force them to weaken encryption. Last year, Apple successfully opposed a similar proposal in the United Kingdom that would have required it to build a backdoor into iCloud. The incident was the latest in a series of conflicts between the Cupertino-based company and government regulators over security and user privacy.

The primary concern is that malicious actors would inevitably discover and exploit any digital backdoor, regardless of whether it was designed exclusively for law enforcement or domestic government agencies. OpenMedia, which has described C-22 as an attempt to create a surveillance state, pointed to a late-2024 incident in which Chinese state-backed hackers compromised government-mandated police wiretap systems to steal sensitive data from AT&T, Verizon, Lumen Technologies, and other telecom providers.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said last week that C-22 will be amended so that digital service providers will not be required to break encryption. However, the requirement to retain metadata would remain unchanged.

A security researcher recently accused Microsoft of intentionally introducing a backdoor into its BitLocker encryption system and then attempting to silence them after they raised concerns. After the researcher publicized the exploit, Microsoft released an out-of-band mitigation but stopped short of confirming whether the flaw was intentional.

Illinois Investment Advisor Indicted on Federal Fraud Charges for Allegedly Swindling Clients in Ponzi Scheme

An Illinois investment advisor has been indicted on federal fraud charges for allegedly swindling at least three clients in a Ponzi scheme.

JOHN MYERS operated Illinois-based Sterling Capital Investments, LLC. From 2022 to 2025, Myers fraudulently solicited and obtained money from three victims, including a husband and wife from Michigan, based on false representations about the performance and value of the investments, according to an indictment returned Thursday in U.S. District Court in Chicago. Myers provided false documentation reflecting the investments were worth more than they were, when Myers knew the value had actually decreased due to his trading losses, the indictment states. Myers engaged in a Ponzi scheme by using some investor funds to repay prior investors, the indictment states.

Myers, 41, of Chicago, is charged with four counts of wire fraud. Arraignment in federal court in Chicago is set for June 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., before U.S. District Judge Edmond E. Chang.

The indictment was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Hasten.
