Trump to Prosecute Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange

 

The Department of Justice is preparing to prosecute Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and hope to try him in a U.S. courtroom, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal.

Prosecutors have reportedly been discussing different charges to level against Assange and how to bring him back to the U.S. Ecuador granted him asylum in 2012 and he has been living in that country’s London embassy ever since.

However, President Lenin Moren, who was elected Ecuadorean president last year, has reportedly soured on Assange.

Assange fled Sweden in 2012 over allegations of sexual assault and rape. Though prosecutors dropped the case last year, he still faces arrest for breaching bail conditions should he leave the embassy.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in April 2017 that the arrest of Assange would become a priority for the Justice Department.

U.S. intelligence agencies believe that WikiLeaks coordinated with Russian hackers to release emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 presidential campaign. GOOGLE JUST PLACED yet another bet on the idea that artificial intelligence will remake the worldβ€”and throw off wild profits.

 

The company disclosed today that it has created a new venture fund dedicated to investing in AI and machine learning companies. The initiative's first public investment: lead investor in a $10.5 million funding round for Seattle startup Algorithmia, which has built a kind of app store for algorithms. Google wouldn’t make anyone available to talk about its new fund, which doesn't yet have a name, or disclose its size. Google and Algorithmia both rather cutely refer to the effort to sell AI shovels as β€œdemocratizing” the technology. More plainly, they’re pursuing a business opportunity created by the recent, rapid advancement in the power of machine learning. Lots of companies with ideas about how to use the technology in their businesses can’t access the expertise needed to do so, which is in short supply.

 

Algorithmia is trying to fill that need with a marketplace that is something like an Etsy for algorithms. Developers can upload their creationsβ€”say, a machine-learning model that identifies a car’s model year from a photoβ€”and get paid if another person or company uses them. The company’s system converts uploaded algorithms into cloud services that can be easily integrated into an app, website, or other service.

 

There are currently more than 3,500 algorithms listed in Algorithmia's marketplace, for everything from detecting nudity to parsing sentences. A private version of the platform is used by large companies in finance, pharma, and other industries to help developers on staff share and deploy their algorithms. β€œThere’s a lot of infrastructure needed to make a reality out of this promise that AI is going to affect every business process out there,” says Diego Oppenheimer, CEO and founder of Algorithmia. β€œWe’re the AI plumbersβ€”it’s the stuff people don’t want to do, but it’s a big market opportunity.”

Currently most regulations covering elections and counting ballots, mail-ins and provisional ballots are a state function. Some federal laws under 42 USC Ch 146 on voting machines and registration but is limited and vague. Fraud, US citizenship and residency are covered under 52 USC Ch 103 but is mainly written to protect individual voters and too vague to hold states accountable. National Conference of State Legislatures discusses elections offering suggestions but mainly shows the laws vary greatly among states.

 

  1. Hold states accountable for verifying residency and citizenship. If discrepancies are noted, applicable counties/states are mandated to turn over voter registration rolls for federal audit.

 

  1. Require states to review and purge rolls at a minimum every 2 years, preferably 1st calendar quarter after a federal election, thus allowing time for errors to be corrected.

 

  1. Chain of custody for ballots and election equipment. States can established own plan to be reviewed and accepted by FEC or follow minimum federal standards.   1. (I would prefer) Limit early voting to 2-3 weeks before the election day.

 

  1. States must submit their provisional and recount to the FEC and by bound at a federal level. Waivers for delays would be considered on case basis by county/state and must be submitted at least 2 days before the deadline. Waivers will be denied if waivers were granted the prior 2 consecutive federal election cycles unless extenuation circumstances are demonstrated.

 

  1. Any ballot boxes or storage discovered two days after election, or mail-in cut-off date, will be investigated by the state and federal authorities as potential fraud including review of chain of custody.

 

  1. DOJ and DHS have authority to request voter sign-off logs to investigate fraud or discrepancies with ballot custody.

 

  1. State plans must specify the recount procedure and oversight, procedures for political party and independent monitoring. (I would leave recount and runoff thresholds to the states.)

 

I could think of a few more and some of the above would need more debate and some may not be practical, just ideas for citizens to consider. Having read the election laws numerous times doing research, feel 42 USC Chapter 146 and 52 USC Subtitle I Voting Rights need a drastic overhaul and more detail to be effect as national election and voting standards. Other laws may also need revision but those are the one I concentrated on.

Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker told Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham in a meeting on Thursday that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation will proceed, according to a person familiar with the meeting. The meeting with Graham and Whitaker comes as a bipartisan group of senators is pushing legislation to protect Mueller’s job. The senators are concerned about Whitaker’s past criticism of the Mueller probe, which is looking at Russian interference in the 2016 election and ties to President Donald Trump’s campaign. Those concerns were only amplified after Trump appointed Whitaker as acting attorney general last week. Whitaker told Graham the investigation would be allowed to proceed, the person said. The person wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the meeting and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

 

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats have called for Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation. A Justice Department spokeswoman said earlier this week that Whitaker will follow Justice Department protocols and consult with senior ethics officials β€œon his oversight responsibilities and matters that may warrant recusal.”

 

Democrats have also called for the special counsel bill to be added to a year-end spending bill that must pass in December to avoid a partial government shutdown. SEALs, Marines Charged in Strangling Murder of Green Beret in Mali

Four enlisted special operations troops, two Marines and two sailors, now face criminal charges in the alleged strangulation last year of Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar during a deployment to Mali, the Navy announced Thursday.

 

The announcement comes at the conclusion of a lengthy Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigation into Melgar's June 4, 2017 death in the Mali capital of Bamako.

 

"The report was forwarded to Commander, Naval Region Mid-Atlantic, designated as the Consolidated Disposition Authority by the Secretary of the Navy to review all relevant information pertaining to Staff Sergeant Melgar's death and make determinations regarding administrative or disciplinary actions as appropriate," NCIS officials said in a released statement.

 

Charged in the alleged murder are a Marine staff sergeant and gunnery sergeant assigned to Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, whose names are redacted in military charge sheets; and two SEAL chief special warfare operators assigned to Naval Special Warfare Development Group, also known as SEAL Team Six.

 

The two SEALs under investigation in Melgar's death had previously been identified as Tony DeDolph and Adam Cranston Matthew.

 

The charges against the four individuals were finalized yesterday, according to a release from Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.

 

All four service members face charges of conspiracy and assault. They're accused of driving to the Marine Corps quarters in Mali to obtain duct tape, breaking into Melgar's locked bedroom, physically restraining the Green Beret by tying him up with duct tape, and strangling him by placing him in a choke hold, according to charge sheets.

 

They're also charged with felony murder and involuntary manslaughter in Melgar's death and of hazing by breaking into his room and restraining him.

 

One of the SEALs is accused of performing a cricothyrotomy, in which a throat tube is inserted to create an airway, on Melgar's dead body to hide evidence of the soldier's strangling.

 

All four are accused of obstructing justice by providing false timelines of events to their chain of command, omitting facts and making false statements to investigators and secretly disposing of alcohol keps in Navy and Army headquarters.

 

An NBC news report in May revealed that NCIS was investigating two Marines and two SEALs for possible involvement in the death of Melgar, 34. The alleged assault reportedly occurred in embassy housing in Bamako in retaliation for a perceived offense at a party.

 

Navy officials said an Article 32 preliminary hearing for all four men is scheduled for Dec. 10. Rear Adm. Charles Rock, the commanding officer for Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, has been appointed to oversee the prosecutions.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) has a checkered history when it comes to China. In 2010, the company shut down its search engine after years of fighting government censorship and a cyberattack from within the country that targeted the email accounts of human rights activists. Google redirected mainland China web users to its uncensored site in Hong Kong and its search has been blocked in the country ever since, though it has maintained a low-profile presence there.

 

Consumers in China are also effectively blocked from the Google Play app store as paid apps and content are prohibited. While Google Play is pre-installed on the majority of the world's Android phones, it is markedly absent in China, which accounts for a third of all Android users.

 

Even in light of its difficulties there in the past, Google is hiring engineers in China in an effort to tap the local talent pool in the burgeoning world of artificial intelligence (AI).

 

AI is H-O-T

AI is the hottest area of technology right now, with major tech companies competing for the limited number of scientists and engineers with experience in the field. Facebook, Inc. announced plans to open a research lab near the University of Montreal, which hosts a vibrant AI program, while Amazon.com is building a research and development center in Barcelona, Spain.

 

U.S. companies aren't the only ones searching the globe for AI talent. Chinese search leader Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) has a 200-person AI lab in Silicon Valley, and earlier this year, internet giant Tencent Holdings Limited (NASDAQOTH:TCEHY) opened a facility in Seattle that would concentrate on speech recognition and natural language understanding.

 

Even the government in China is getting into the act, identifying AI as a key area of interest in its five-year plan and enlisting Baidu to develop a national laboratory dedicated to AI.

 

A ripe market

Google hosted an AI summit in the city of Wuzhen earlier this year, in conjunction with a historic match in which the company's DeepMind AlphaGo computer unseated the world champion in the ancient and complex Chinese game of Go. At both events, Google executives revealed that the company would hire engineers and scientists in the field of AI. The company has numerous positions listed in Beijing focused on the area of machine learning, a subdiscipline of AI. This would add to the more than 500 Google employees currently in Shanghai and Beijing.

 

There have long been reports of Google seeking to expand its presence in China, as the country has been the "one that got away." With a population of 1.37 billion and an estimated 591 million smartphone users, it represents both a rich opportunity and distinct challenge for Google.

Meanwhile, Google's cloud doesn't currently operate in China, and it would need to partner with a local company in order to comply with regulations that require that any data collected be stored on servers located within China.

 

Can Google turn things around?

Recent overtures including the AI summit, the historic Go match, and the hiring of local AI talent may signify an attempt by Google at thawing the chilly relations with China. AI systems require plentiful amounts of data in order to learn, and China's bountiful population provides a tempting target. Still, years of animosity and continuing government regulation will be a significant hurdle. I don't see Google marching triumphantly into China anytime soon.

A metal fence separating US-Mexico border between Imperial Beach and Tijuana proved to be no challenge for hundreds of Central American migrants who scaled the wall with ease, taunting the American border agents on the other side.

 

Not all the migrants who broke away from the main caravan of asylum seekers found shelters once they arrived in Tijuana, Mexico. Many of those eagerly pursuing their dreams of a promised land continued west before they arrived at Border Field State Park in Imperial Beach, California.

 

The large fence which crosses the beach at US-Mexico Pacific border was not much of an obstacle, as dozens of people were seen scaling the wall.Β While some migrants did not go beyond perching on top of the fence, a few just couldn’t wait to step on US soil.

 

However, no arrests were made as US border guards who patrolled the beach ordered the illegals back to Mexico.

 

To make sure the beach border section stays secured, additional US border agents and the military were called in to begin toΒ β€œharden” the barrier with razor-sharp wire.

 

β€œWe readjusted our priorities and now are hardening this area quickly with concertina wire. The military has moved in as well as border patrol agents to make sure this is secure,” San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said Wednesday, noting that over 300 migrants had reached the beach barrier a day earlier.

A group of 398 asylum seekers arrived at Tijuana on Wednesday to join over 350 migrants that reached the shores of the Pacific on Tuesday. The two groups merged with some 80 LGBT activists and made it to the US-Mexico frontier on Sunday. In eager anticipation of their arrival, San Diego border agents and troops erected additional barricades and barbed wire fencing. US authorities also announced lane closures at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry.

 

Currently, several thousand Central American migrants are heading for the US in three separate caravans. Most of them intend to take the Pacific coast route to reach the US, which is still over 1,000 miles away from them.

 

To deal with the influx of refugees, Donald Trump has authorized the Pentagon to deploy 5,800 troops to Arizona, Texas and California to secure the southern border. The US troops, which have drones, helicopters and planes at their disposal will help 2,100 National Guardsmen battle what Trump called a migrantΒ β€œinvasion.” While the deployment of such a massive military contingent drew extensive criticism, the Pentagon's chief on Wednesday defended the decision to send troops to secure the frontier.

A Chinese-owned company penetrated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s private server, according to sources briefed on the matter.

The company inserted code that forwarded copies of Clinton’s emails to the Chinese company in real time.

A Chinese-owned company operating in the Washington, D.C., area hacked Hillary Clinton’s private server throughout her term as secretary of state and obtained nearly all her emails, two sources briefed on the matter told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

 

The Chinese firm obtained Clinton’s emails in real time as she sent and received communications and documents through her personal server, according to the sources, who said the hacking was conducted as part of an intelligence operation.

 

The Chinese wrote code that was embedded in the server, which was kept in Clinton’s residence in upstate New York. The code generated an instant β€œcourtesy copy” for nearly all of her emails and forwarded them to the Chinese company, according to the sources.

 

The Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG) found that virtually all of Clinton’s emails were sent to a β€œforeign entity,” Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, said at a July 12 House Committee on the Judiciary hearing. He did not reveal the entity’s identity, but said it was unrelated to Russia. Two officials with the ICIG, investigator Frank Rucker and attorney Janette McMillan, met repeatedly with FBI officials to warn them of the Chinese intrusion, according to a former intelligence officer with expertise in cybersecurity issues, who was briefed on the matter. He spoke anonymously, as he was not authorized to publicly address the Chinese’s role with Clinton’s server.

 

Among those FBI officials was Peter Strzok, who was then the bureau’s top counterintelligence official. Strzok was fired this month following the discovery he sent anti-Trump texts to his mistress and co-worker, Lisa Page. Strzok didn’t act on the information the ICIG provided him, according to Gohmert.

 

Gohmert mentioned in the Judiciary Committee hearing that ICIG officials told Strzok and three other top FBI officials that they found an β€œanomaly” on Clinton’s server.

 

The former intelligence officer TheDCNF spoke with said the ICIG β€œdiscovered the anomaly pretty early in 2015.”

 

β€œWhen [the ICIG] did a very deep dive, they found in the actual metadata β€” the data which is at the header and footer of all the emails β€” that a copy, a β€˜courtesy copy,’ was being sent to a third party and that third party was a known Chinese public company that was involved in collecting intelligence for China,” the former intelligence officer told TheDCNF.

 

β€œThe [the ICIG] believe that there was some level of phishing. But once they got into the server something was embedded,” he said. β€œThe Chinese are notorious for embedding little surprises like this.”

 

The intelligence officer declined to name the Chinese company.

 

β€œWe do know the name of the company. There are indications there are other β€˜cutouts’ that were involved. I would be in a lot of trouble if I gave you the name,” he told TheDCNF.

 

A government staff official who’s been briefed on the ICIG’s findings told TheDCNF that the Chinese state-owned firm linked to the hacking operates in Washington’s northern Virginia suburbs. The source was not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.

It's still important, though, and I agree - first step towards declass b/c it makes all these electronic searches visible to the public. I don't do Fed much since I'm a LE adviser for a (major metro) municipal agency. A Fukushima waiting to happen? Huge stockpile of nuclear waste on California fault line threatens US

 

Millions of pounds of toxic waste are being buried under the site of a privately owned former nuclear power plant in California. The only problem? Experts warn that it sits on a major fault line β€” and in a tsunami zone.

 

The San Onofre nuclear plant, located just 108 feet from a popular beach, was shut down in 2015 after a leak was discovered. Now, the Southern California Edison energy company is burying the nuclear waste at the failed site β€” a move which has been approved by federal regulators.

 

Charles Langley, the executive director of Public Watchdogs, told RT that the situation at San Onofre is ofΒ β€œgrave concern” because spent nuclear fuel and waterΒ β€œdon’t mix.”

 

Langley claimed that research carried out by experts which highlighted the extreme risks of storing the waste at the facility wasΒ β€œsuppressed” by the very government agency responsible for protecting public health and safety.

 

"There are actually fault lines that run underneath the facility. We've documented this in geological reports that were suppressed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It’s in a Tsunami zone and it’s also extremely vulnerable to terrorist attacks.”

 

So far, 29 of 73 canisters of waste are below the surface of the ground. Langley warns, however, that the canisters are unequipped to store the toxic nuclear waste. The warranty for the containment system is only for 10 yearsΒ β€œand the canisters themselves are only guaranteed to last 25 years,” he said.

 

Nina Babiarz, a board member at Public Watchdogs, told RT thatΒ β€œthere should have been a requirement for an underground monitoring system before one can even went in the ground.”

 

Babiarz believes the San Onofre plant is a ticking time bomb.

 

β€œIt's still very prevalent to me that this not only could happen, but it has happened at Three Mile Island, of course it has happened at Chernobyl, it’s happened at Fukushima β€” and lest we forget, it could happen at San Onofre,” she said.

 

Edison refused to answer any of RT’s questions. On its website, however, the company says they areΒ β€œbeing proactive in seeking out options for the relocation of the fuel, including an off-site facility.”

 

But San Onofre is not the only nuclear site causing concern to scientists and environmentalists in California.

 

The Santa Susana Field Laboratory β€” Β a highly classified former nuclear testing site, which was the location of the worst nuclear meltdown in nuclear history β€” Β was scorched in the California wildfires. During the 1959 disaster, 459 times more radiation was leaked there than during the infamous 1979 Three Mile Island meltdown in Pennsylvania.

 

Physicians for Social Responsibility say that the toxic materials in the soil and vegetation could become airborne in smoke and ash. More than half a million people live within 10 miles of the area.

 

Investigative journalist Paul DeRienzo told RT that given the site’s classified status, it’s no surprise that Americans don’t know much about the place.

 

β€œIt was a tremendous accident [in 1959] that gave off more radiation than Three Mile Island did β€” and other than that, very little is known. It’s a highly classified site and whatever we learn about it, we learn in dribs and drabs over a long period of time,” DeRienzo said.

 

Asked whether government assurances that the site is safe could be believed, DeRienzo warned against trusting official guarantees.

EXCLUSIVE: GOOGLE, CIA INVEST IN 'FUTURE' OF WEB MONITORING

 

THE INVESTMENT ARMS of the CIA and Google are both backing a company that monitors the web in real time – and says it uses that information to predict the future.

 

The company is called Recorded Future, and it scours tens of thousands of websites, blogs and Twitter accounts to find the relationships between people, organizations, actions and incidents – both present and still-to-come. In a white paper, the company says its temporal analytics engine "goes beyond search" by "looking at the 'invisible links' between documents that talk about the same, or related, entities and events."

 

The idea is to figure out for each incident who was involved, where it happened and when it might go down. Recorded Future then plots that chatter, showing online "momentum" for any given event.

 

"The cool thing is, you can actually predict the curve, in many cases," says company CEO Christopher Ahlberg, a former Swedish Army Ranger with a PhD in computer science.

 

Which naturally makes the 16-person Cambridge, Massachusetts, firm attractive to Google Ventures, the search giant's investment division, and to In-Q-Tel, which handles similar duties for the CIA and the wider intelligence community.

 

It's not the very first time Google has done business with America's spy agencies. Long before it reportedly enlisted the help of the National Security Agency to secure its networks, Google sold equipment to the secret signals-intelligence group. In-Q-Tel backed the mapping firm Keyhole, which was bought by Google in 2004 – and then became the backbone for Google Earth.

 

This appears to be the first time, however, that the intelligence community and Google have funded the same startup, at the same time. No one is accusing Google of directly collaborating with the CIA. But the investments are bound to be fodder for critics of Google, who already see the search giant as overly cozy with the U.S. government, and worry that the company is starting to forget its "don't be evil" mantra.

America's spy services have become increasingly interested in mining "open source intelligence" – information that’s publicly available, but often hidden in the daily avalanche of TV shows, newspaper articles, blog posts, online videos and radio reports.

 

"Secret information isn’t always the brass ring in our profession," then CIA-director General Michael Hayden told a conference in 2008. "In fact, there’s a real satisfaction in solving a problem or answering a tough question with information that someone was dumb enough to leave out in the open."

 

U.S. spy agencies, through In-Q-Tel, have invested in a number of firms to help them better find that information. Visible Technologies crawls over half a million web 2.0 sites a day, scraping more than a million posts and conversations taking place on blogs, YouTube, Twitter and Amazon. Attensity applies the rules of grammar to the so-called "unstructured text" of the web to make it more easily digestible by government databases. Keyhole (now Google Earth) is a staple of the targeting cells in military-intelligence units.

 

Recorded Future strips from web pages the people, places and activities they mention. The company examines when and where these events happened ("spatial and temporal analysis") and the tone of the document ("sentiment analysis"). Then it applies some artificial-intelligence algorithms to tease out connections between the players. Recorded Future maintains an index with more than 100 million events, hosted on Amazon.com servers. The analysis, however, is on the living web.

 

"We're right there as it happens," Ahlberg told Danger Room as he clicked through a demonstration. "We can assemble actual real-time dossiers on people."

 

Recorded Future certainly has the potential to spot events and trends early. Take the case of Hezbollah's long-range missiles. On March 21, Israeli President Shimon Peres leveled the allegation that the terror group had Scud-like weapons. Scouring Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah's past statements, Recorded Future found corroborating evidence from a month prior that appeared to back up Peres' accusations.

 

That's one of several hypothetical cases Recorded Future runs in its blog devoted to intelligence analysis. But it's safe to assume that the company already has at least one spy agency's attention. In-Q-Tel doesn't make investments in firms without an "end customer" ready to test out that company's products.

 

Both Google Ventures and In-Q-Tel made their investments in 2009, shortly after the company was founded. The exact amounts weren't disclosed, but were under $10 million each. Google's investment came to light earlier this year online. In-Q-Tel, which often announces its new holdings in press releases, quietly uploaded a brief mention of its investment a few weeks ago.

 

Both In-Q-Tel and Google Ventures have seats on Recorded Future's board. Ahlberg says those board members have been "very helpful," providing business and technology advice, as well as introducing him to potential customers. Both organizations, it's safe to say, will profit handsomely if Recorded Future is ever sold or taken public. Ahlberg's last company, the corporate intelligence firm Spotfire, was acquired in 2007 for $195 million in cash.

 

Google Ventures did not return requests to comment for this article. In-Q-Tel Chief of Staff Lisbeth Poulos e-mailed a one-line statement: "We are pleased that Recorded Future is now part of IQT's portfolio of innovative startup companies who support the mission of the U.S. Intelligence Community."

 

Just because Google and In-Q-Tel have both invested in Recorded Future doesn't mean Google is suddenly in bed with the government. Of course, to Google's critics – including conservative legal groups, and Republican congressmen – the Obama Administration and the Mountain View, California, company slipped between the sheets a long time ago.

 

Google CEO Eric Schmidt hosted a town hall at company headquarters in the early days of Obama's presidential campaign. Senior White House officials like economic chief Larry Summers give speeches at the New America Foundation, the left-of-center think tank chaired by Schmidt. Former Google public policy chief Andrew McLaughlin is now the White House's deputy CTO, and was publicly (if mildly) reprimanded by the administration for continuing to hash out issues with his former colleagues.

"To me, whether this is troublesome or not depends on the degree of transparency involved. β€˜Dark grey smoke started coming out’: PHOTOS show burned iPhone β€˜after OS update’

 

An iPhone X was left melted, charred and cracked after it reportedly exploded following an operating system update. Hair-raising photos of the damaged device were shared on social media.

 

In a shocking Twitter post, Rahel Mohamad said he was simply updating his iPhone X to the latest system, iOS 12.1, when the appalling incident occurred. He shared some alarming photos showing the severely damaged phone with a melted cover screen and major burn marks.

 

β€œDark grey smoke started coming from the phone,” Mohamad, who lives in Washington,Β toldΒ Gadget360.Β β€œThe update was completed and as soon as the phone turned on it started to smoke and caught fire.”

 

He said he had been charging the device using an Apple Lightning Cable and Wall Adapter while the phone was updating, but removed it from the charger when he suddenly noticed it was becoming hot.

 

β€œWhen I held the phone it was very hot and I drop [sic] the phone immediately. Then it started to smoke,” he explained of the terrifying incident.

 

Apple responded to Mohamad’s tweet with a remarkably staid message, noting:Β β€œThat’s definitely not expected behavior.”

 

In a later message pointing out that the tech giant said it couldn’t meet with him about the strange self-destructing phone for a week, Mohamad said he had resorted to simply mailing his phone to Apple so they could investigate.

 

RT has contacted the company for comment on the incident.

 

While Apple hasn’t suffered from as many exploding phones as rival Samsung, this isn’t the first reported iPhone self-detonation. In May, an iPhone 6 exploded when it was charging in a Las Vegas repair store, while last February, an iPhone 7 blew up in Arizona.

What's the damage? War on terror price-tag about to top $6 TRILLION, and it’s only the beginning

 

With the longest war in US history now dragging into its 17th year, Americans are looking at a massive bill. Total costs of the War on Terror now approach $6 trillion, according to a new report – to say nothing of the human costs.

 

To arrive at this mind-boggling sum, Brown University’s Cost of WarΒ reportincluded not only Defense Department spending in Iraq and Afghanistan, which at $1.9 trillion is already nothing to sneeze at, but associated expenses from the State and Homeland Security Departments, an increase in the Department of Defense budget, and – perhaps the most significant hidden cost of the war – long-term healthcare costs for veterans. All told, the β€œcheck” comes to $5.9 trillion.

 

And will that be cash, or credit? The US has been financing these wars through deficit spending and borrowing, meaning there are hefty interest payments to be made. A 2011 calculation that capped total war appropriations at a fraction of their current level yielded a cumulative interest figure of $7.9 trillion. Given that the Trump administration has shown no sign of winding down the fighting – indeed, his cabinet has expanded its saber-rattling beyond Iran and Venezuela into outer space – there is no telling how long we will continue to borrow against the inevitable to fund our war habit.

 

The report meticulously breaks down the conflict’s human toll, explaining that while officially 6,800 US soldiers have died in combat, that number doesn’t include private contractors, whose casualty numbers are just as high. Nor does it include Afghan, Pakistani and Iraqi forces fighting alongside the US, whose death toll is far higher. Civilian deaths are similarly difficult to calculate, though the report suggests 244,000 violent deaths can be directly attributed to American military actions in those three countries – with an estimated 870,000 more dead of secondary causes. Those numbers don’t include the injured and disabled, nor the 10.1 million people displaced by conflict.

 

Study author Neta Crawford took President Trump to task for continuing the unchecked war spending of the previous two administrations. β€œThe public would be better served by increased transparency and by the development of a comprehensive strategy to end the wars and deal with other urgent national security priorities.”

 

As if to prove that Americans no longer understand irony, a Veterans Day ceremony last week saw George W. Bush – who launched the War on Terror during his presidency – honored for his β€œcommitment to veterans” by Joe Biden – who oversaw that war’s expansion during his vice presidency. Certainly, between the two of them, they’ve created more veterans than any other politicians in history, but commitment?

 

Perhaps most ironically of all, even the soldiers who fought in Afghanistan no longer believe in their war. AΒ pollΒ conducted last month found 73 percent of veterans believe the war has not been a success for the US, and 69 percent support full troop withdrawal. Even General Austin Scott Miller, who leads US and NATO operations in Afghanistan, hasΒ admittedthe war cannot be won militarily.

North Korea’s Kim oversees testing of newly developed β€˜tactical’ weapon

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the test of a new β€œultramodern tactical weapon,” the North’s state-run media reported Friday in the first mention of such a test in months.

 

Kim hailed the β€œgreat success,” which he said β€œserves as another striking demonstration of the validity of the Party policy of prioritizing defence science and technology and the rapidly developing defence capability of the country and as a decisive turn in bolstering the fighting capacity of the Korean People’s Army,” the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said.

 

The report said Kim had visited a national defense institute site, overseeing the test of the unspecified new tactical weapon.

 

Kim said the weapons system tested was one that his late father, Kim Jong Il, was especially interested in during his lifetime and led the development of personally.

 

The visit was the first so-called field inspection by the North Korean leader of a weapons test since last November, when he oversaw the test of the Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile. Experts believe that missile is capable of striking much, if not all, of the continental United States.

 

While Kim’s visit was likely to raise eyebrows in Washington amid stalled nuclear talks between the two countries, the ambiguity of the weapon tested, as well as a separate report by KCNA about an economic-focused visit by the North Korean leader, appeared intended to temper any criticism.

 

The weapons test comes as questions swirl over progress in denuclearization talks between the North and United States after the landmark June 12 summit between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump.

 

At that summit, the two leaders agreed to work toward denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula.

 

The 1Β½-page joint statement released at the meeting, however, was short on specifics, and negotiations have made little headway since.

 

Pyongyang has demanded the relaxation of crushing sanctions over its nuclear arms and missile programs. Washington has balked at this demand, saying there will be no easing in international sanctions until North Korea takes more concrete steps to relinquish its nuclear weapons program.

 

The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request by The Japan Times for comment on the report.

 

Trump on Tuesday criticized what he called β€œinaccurate” media reports that North Korea had not declared an estimated 20 missile bases, and added in a tweet: β€œI will be the first to let you know if things go bad!”

 

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had been due to meet North Korea’s Kim Yong Chol, who is believed to be the right-hand man to to Kim Jong Un, in New York earlier this month, but that meeting was suddenly postponed just days before it was scheduled to be held.

 

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday that Trump plans to meet Kim Jong Un again next year, and will push for a concrete plan outlining the North’s moves to abandon its weapons programs.

 

In January, Kim declared his country had β€œperfected” its nuclear forces and later in the year announced that it was halting longer-range missile and nuclear testing, setting the stage for the June summit.

 

But in the more than five months since, negotiators have yet to elicit from Pyongyang a declaration detailing its weapons programs, or a promise to rein in the deployment of its existing arsenal.

 

Instead, the North has touted the closure of its main Punggye-ri nuclear test site and the apparent ongoing shuttering of its Sohae missile-engine test facility. It has also dangled the possibility of closing other sites and allowing international inspections β€” but only if Washington takes β€œcorresponding measures,” namely the relaxing of sanctions.

 

These repeated demands of reciprocal moves, however, have been met with the same response by Washington: Pyongyang must first give up its nuclear weapons.

 

This prompted North Korea to warn earlier this month that it could even revive its scrapped policy of pyongjin, or β€œparallel advance,” in which the country simultaneously pursues economic and nuclear development, if the its demand is not met.

 

In April, Kim abruptly announced he was retiring dual-track policy and adopting a β€œnew strategic line” that focuses on rebuilding the country’s tattered economy.

 

Perhaps more pressing for Washington and Tokyo than a return to this stance, however, have been recent media reports citing anonymous U.S. intelligence officials as saying that work on the North’s nuclear program continues unabated, despite its pledge to take steps in the opposite direction

VP Pence said to be gearing up for all-out Cold War with China unless it bows to all US demands

 

Washington expects Beijing to undertake a dramatic change in all of its policies to accommodate US demands and is prepared for prolonged hostilities if it does not, Vice President Mike Pence reportedly said.

 

The confrontational stance of the Trump administration was described by journalist Josh Rogin in a Washington Post opinion piece. He said Pence outlined it to him during a flight aboard Air Force Two on the VP’s Asian trip.

 

The US wants China to offer concessions on a wide range of grievances, from intellectual property protection to territorial claims in the South China Sea.

 

Chinese President Xi Jinping is also expected to make a pledge to change Beijing’s economic, military, and political behavior during his meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires on November 30. If Washington is not satisfied, there will be β€œan all-out Cold War,” according to Rogin.

 

I think much of that will depend on Argentina,” Pence said.Β β€œThe president’s attitude is, we want to make sure they know where we stand, what we are prepared to do, so they can come to Argentina with concrete proposals that address not just the trade deficit that we face… We’re convinced China knows where we stand.”

 

Pence said the US isΒ β€œin a strong position” for a potential escalation of the trade war it has already unleashed on China. He added that the US had no intention of ceding influence in Asia to China and will not back down if Beijing choses to continue its current policies.

 

β€œThen so be it,” Pence said.Β β€œWe are here to stay.”

 

Washington has been ramping up pressure on Beijing in recent years, imposing tariffs on Chinese goods and lately accusing China of interfering in US domestic politics.

 

Beijing seems to have no intention to concede. It responded to US tariffs with its own protectionist measures and continues its multibillion-dollar One Belt investment program, which is meant to secure additional stable trade routes to its most important suppliers and customers.

Been looking over AZ votes. Been adding up house votes by county and comparing to how the vote went to Gov V Sen. The votes by House rep pretty much add up to the Senate side of the vote per county.

ie. counts have been changing, but this is close.

Maricopa Sen R 611161 D 659540 Gov R 726783 D 542034

If you add up votes for house reps in the district you come up with

R 616322 D 653084.

It is that way across most of the counties.

What does it mean?

Flordia fuckery was easy to spot, you could see on one graph that Broward had a 6-7 std deviation in Sen v Gov leaving a blank spot. If it was done in AZ, it has to be computer related across the whole state.

California wildfire rips through nuclear waste site, fueling airborne toxin risk concerns

 

The Woolsey fire that engulfed over 90,000 acres in California last weekend may have spread toxic and radioactive substances from a Superfund site, according to activists who believe authorities might be downplaying the risks.

 

The fire passed through the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL), a federal Superfund site in the Simi Hills that was the site of the worst nuclear meltdown in US history in 1959. While the California Department of Toxic Substances Control said there was no reason to be concerned of "any risks other than those normally present in a wildfire situation," locals aren't so sure, pointing out that the agency has dragged its feet in cleaning up toxic sites and accusing it of a possible cover-up.Β 

 

Physicians for Social Responsibility Los Angeles president Robert Dodge castigated the DTSC,Β pointingΒ out that the site – now owned by Boeing – remains radioactive and polluted despite the agency's promise to clean it up eight years ago. "These toxic materials are in SSFL's soil and vegetation, and when it burns and becomes airborne in smoke and ash, there is real possibility of heightened exposure for area residents."Β 

 

The DTSCΒ reassuredΒ residents that the SSFL facilities were not affected by the fire and claimed measurements of radiation and hazardous compounds from both the site and the surrounding communities were within normal levels,Β posing no danger other than that normally present in the aftermath of a wildfire. Thousands of people live within two miles of the site, which was originally developed to test rocket engines and conduct nuclear research in the 1940s.

 

NASA, which owns a small piece of the site, echoed the DTSC'sΒ message in a press release, stating that the fire presented no risks beyond those normally associated with wildfiresΒ although itsΒ property experienced "significant fire damage" across all three "historic districts."Β 

 

Residents' concerns about authorities possibly downplaying the risks are fueled by the DTSC's track record of broken promises, combined with the very real history of nuclear meltdown onsite. The California state legislature commissioned an Independent Review Panel to investigate the DTSC andΒ foundΒ in 2016 that the agency had placed communities "at risk" by "failing to perform its basic function of protecting the public and environment from industrial hazardous waste and contamination." The DTSC was held responsible for the Exide scandal in Vernon, in which a battery recycling plant leaked toxins into surrounding communities for decades, and was criticized for its backlog of hazardous waste permits

 

Local parents have blamed contamination at the SSFL site for their children's cancers, and the Centers for Disease Control designated lab workers from the 1950s who developed cancer as part of a "special exposure cohort" eligible for compensation for their years of laboring in a radioactive environment. While the SSFL was the site of multiple nuclear accidents, the worst took place in 1959 when a reactor vented nuclear material to avoid an explosion, ultimately releasing 459 times more radiation than the infamous Three Mile Island meltdown 20 years later.
