Discovery of superionic water a solid step in molecule study
Posted: February 19, 2018 at 1:48 a.m.
Scientists have confirmed a form of water that is simultaneously solid and liquid.
It is the latest advance in the study of water, a seemingly simple substance that can shift between many different configurations.
"That's a really strange state of matter," said Marius Millot, a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, the lead author of a paper published Feb. 5 in the journal Nature Physics that describes the experiments.
This new form, called superionic water, consists of a rigid lattice of oxygen atoms through which positively charged hydrogen nuclei move. It is not known to exist naturally anywhere on Earth, but it may be bountiful farther out in the solar system, including in the mantles of Uranus and Neptune.
Water is a simple molecule โ two hydrogens attached to one oxygen. The three atoms normally form a V-shape. In the usual ice found on Earth, the Vs connect in an airy structure. (That is why water, unlike most every other substance, expands when it freezes.)
When squeezed, the hydrogens and oxygens shuffle into other crystal structures; scientists now know of more than a dozen different forms of ice.
Theorists first suggested 30 years ago that superionic water might exist under extremely high pressures and high temperatures. The heat melts the chemical bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The high pressure keeps the larger and heavier oxygen atoms stacked in a fixed crystal alignment โ a solid โ while the hydrogen nuclei, or ions, flow through โ a liquid.
That makes it a conductor of electricity such as a metal, but the current is carried by positively charged ions instead of negatively charged electrons.
"It's as though the water ice is partially molten," said Raymond Jeanloz, a professor of earth and planetary science at the University of California, Berkeley, and an author of the Nature Physics paper.
In the new experiment, scientists at Lawrence Livermore first squeezed water between two pieces of diamond with a pressure of 360,000 pounds per square inch. That is about 25,000 times greater than the air pressing against you here on the surface of earth, and the water is squeezed into a type of ice known as ice VII, which is about 60 percent denser than usual water, and solid at room temperature. Each diamond cell contained about one-seven-millionth of an ounce of water.
The researchers then took the compressed ice, packed in carry-on luggage, to the University of Rochester where it was blasted by a pulse of laser light. That caused shock waves through the ice that lasted 10 to 20 billionths of a second, heating it to thousands of degrees and exerting a pressure more than a million times that of Earth's atmosphere. Those conditions exist inside Uranus and Neptune and undoubtedly within numerous ice giants around other stars.
Earlier experiments by other groups had produced conductive water that could have been superionic, but those scientists could not determine if the current was carried by ions and not electrons. Here, Millot and his colleagues were able to capture the optical appearance of the ice. If electrons were moving around, it would have been reflective. (That is why metals are shiny.) Instead, the sample was opaque. That pointed to the movement of ions instead, indicating a superionic ice.
The superionic ice melted into a liquid at about 8,500 degrees Fahrenheit.
"It is a rather amazing experiment and the results are consistent" with theoretical and computational predictions, said Roberto Car, a chemistry professor at Princeton University.
The superionic ice could help explain the lopsided, off-center magnetic fields of Uranus and Neptune, the solar system's seventh and eighth planets that are known as ice giants and were visited briefly by NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft in the 1980s. Instead of Earth's magnetic field generated at the core of the planet, the fields of those icy bodies may originate, in part, within shells of superionic ice inside their mantles.
Jeanloz said the agreement between experiment and prediction offered promise that scientists are beginning to understand the basic physics of how molecules in general behave under changing temperatures and pressures well enough for practical use.
"As one starts validating those kinds of predictions, it gives a hope that one could start thinking about engineering new materials," Jeanloz said, "where you tell me what properties you want, and someone can use a computer now to figure out what kind of material, what kind of elements you have to put together, and how they'd have to be packed together to come up with those properties."

Ok so I have no idea if this even means anything or how widespread it is, but a number of local schools have gotten threats on Instagram saying that someone is going to shoot up the school on Tuesday morning. There is usually a stock photo of the school in the post. Obviously there is no way that the police can be at all ththe schools and most are thinking itโs nothing more than a hoax but if people can help but think itโs something more. The Dead Sea is considered one of the world's cultural and ecological treasures. And while it's not technically dead, it is dying, drying up. In the last 50 years, the water level has shrunk by more than a third. That is a concern for Israel, Jordan and the Palestinians.
NPR's Linda Gradstein reports.
LINDA GRADSTEIN: Twenty years ago, the Ein Gedi Spa opened, offering tourists massages and mud wraps. Clients used to walk just a few steps from the spa to the Dead Sea, where the water is so salty you can float and read a newspaper at the same time.
Today, the shoreline is almost a mile from the spa and tourists have to take a train to the beach. Kurrah Berger(ph), a spokeswoman for the Dead Sea Regional Council, says the Dead Sea area has several important tourist sites for Christians and Jews, which are now being threatened.
Ms. KURRAH BERGER (Spokeswoman, Dead Sea Regional Council): In the Dead Sea, you can go to Qumran to see there the place where the scrolls were found. And to see the place where, you know, the first time that Israel was divided between Abraham and Lot. And to go to (unintelligible), which was the first place that people were baptized.
GRADSTEIN: Since the 1970s, the water level of the Dead Sea has dropped three feet a year, and that is threatening plant and wildlife reserves along the shore. Environmentalists are especially worried because the Dead Sea is an important resting stop for hundreds of millions of migratory birds that fly between Europe and Africa. The receding waters have also left hundreds of sink holes that threaten to collapse roads and buildings. The Dead Sea is drying up for several reasons.
Most of the water that once flowed into the sea from the Jordan River is being diverted for drinking water and agriculture. And the river has become polluted with sewage. In addition, Israeli and Jordanian companies on both sides of the sea are allowing an estimated 66 billion gallons of sea water to evaporate each year in order to extract potash and other minerals. Uriela Jarona(ph), of the chief engineer for the regional council, says the Dead Sea must be preserved.
Mr. URIELA JARONA (Chief Engineer, Dead Sea Regional Council): The Dead Sea, as a sea, is a very unique. It's in the lowest place on earth. There is no like this late on the planet.
GRADSTEIN: The United Nations is considering declaring the Dead Sea a world heritage site, but environmentalists say if they don't act soon, there won't be much of the Dead Sea left. Recently, officials from Jordan, Israel and the West Bank, met to discuss ways to stem the shrinkage. One idea is what's called the Red Dead Canal, a multi-billion dollar project that would carry water more than a hundred miles from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. The World Bank has agreed to fund a feasibility study for the project.
Israeli tour guide Adrian Aaron(ph) from the Israeli Nature Reserves Authority explains one benefit of this solution.
Mr. ADRIAN AARON (Tour Guide, Israeli Nature Reserves Authority): The Red Sea is naturally at sea level. It means that the water would be flowing downhill and the flow could be utilized for a hydroelectric plant. And in some ways that would pay for the construction of the canal.
GRADSTEIN: But some environmentalists worry that pumping the far less salty water into the Dead Sea could release toxic gases and wipe out local plant and wildlife. They favor cleaning up the Jordan River and allowing more water to flow into the river and the Dead Sea from the Sea of Galilee in the north. But Adrian Aaron says it won't be easy.
Mr. AARON: We can try be more efficient with our water usage with Israeli is already fairly efficient with water usage and our population is increasing. So it doesn't look like that's going to make the main different.
GRADSTEIN: Aaron says the Finance Ministry has authorized building new desalinization plants that would allow Israeli to take less of its drinking water from the Sea of Galilee allowing more water to flow into the Dead Sea. But construction of these plants would cost tens of millions of dollars and would take several years. And during that time, the Dead Sea would continue to shrink. Uriela Jarona, the chief engineer for the Regional Council, wants to increase awareness of the Dead Sea problem.
He's organized the Tour of the Dead Sea Bicycle Rally next month for an estimated 300 riders from Israel, Jordan and around the world. Uriela Jarona says he hopes to make the area around the Dead Sea a cycling park that will promote ecotourism and help both Jordan and Israel.
