Huawei opens cybersecurity center in Belgium amid US crackdown

Chinese tech giant Huawei has opened a ‘cybersecurity and transparency’ center in the Belgian capital of Brussels in a bid to convince Europeans that its products do not pose any security risk, despite what the US says.

On Tuesday, the Chinese company’s executives inaugurated the Huawei European Cybersecurity Center, which would allow European customers of Huawei to review the source code used in the firm’s products. The move comes as Huawei seeks to win over the Europeans, who are now facing intense pressure from the US as it urges them to bar the Chinese tech giant from developing their national telecommunications networks.

“Both trust and distrust should be based on facts, not feelings, not speculation, and not baseless rumor,” Ken Hu, a deputy chairman of Huawei, told the crowd that gathered for the opening event in Brussels. His words came as a rebuke at Washington which has so far presented no solid evidence to substantiate its claims that Huawei equipment could be used by Beijing to spy on other nations.

“[The] Chinese government has no intention and has never asked any company, any Chinese company” to “install either backdoor or [to] collect data [and send it] back to China,” said Huawei's Western Europe President Vincent Pang.

Despite US efforts, Europe has so far remained Huawei’s biggest market outside of China and the company hopes to play a major role in developing the continent’s 5G networks.

The Brussels facility is not the first such center opened by Huawei in Europe. Earlier, the Chinese giant established a similar center in Germany’s Bonn. It also funds a government-run British testing site, the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre, which has existed since 2010. Huawei offered to establish a similar center in Poland following the arrest of a Chinese Huawei employee there on spying charges in early 2019.

Idaho lawmakers kill bill that would have ended child marriage under 16 in state

The Idaho state House on Thursday killed a bipartisan bill that would have ended child marriage in the state.

The legislation would have made changes to the state’s current law, which allows children under the age of 16 to marry with consent from the child’s parents and a judge.

The bill proposed setting the minimum age to marry at 16 and requiring 16- and 17-year-olds to have the consent of their parents and the court in order to marry. This would still have put Idaho’s marriage age below that of many other states, where the legal age is 18.

The GOP-led state House voted 28-39 to reject the bill, according to the Idaho Statesman.

Opponents to the bill argued that it would result in too much government and judicial oversight. Some also cited the state’s abortion laws, which allow a girl under the age of 18 to get an abortion with the consent of one parent or a judge.

“If we pass this legislation, it will then become easier in the state of Idaho to obtain an abortion at 15 years old than it will to decide to form a family and create a family for a child that has been conceived,” State Rep. Christy Zito (R) said on the House floor, according to the Statesman.

Idaho has the highest rate of child marriage in the country, the Statesman reported, citing a national report from advocacy group Unchained at Last.

Last year, Delaware became the first state to ban child marriage, setting the minimum age for marriage in any circumstance at 18.

A number of other states, including New York and Texas, have also recently passed laws to raise the minimum legal age to marry.

Treasury Board President Jane Philpott, a member of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, resigned her post on Monday because she “lost confidence” in the administration’s handling of the SNC-Lavalin scandal.

Perhaps the most cutting line in Philpott’s letter of resignation was when she declared, “There can be a cost to acting on one’s principles, but there is a bigger cost to abandoning them.”

Wilson-Raybould herself resigned abruptly in February. She hailed Philpott as “incomparable” on Monday and saluted her “constant and unassailable commitment to always doing what is right and best for Canadians.”

Trudeau’s top aide and close friend Gerald Butts resigned later in February, insisting there was no wrongdoing in the effort to protect SNC-Lavalin from prosecution, but he will return to the spotlight on Wednesday to testify before the House of Commons Justice Committee.

The Toronto Sun on Monday judged Butts may have become the key figure in the battle for Trudeau’s political survival, saying:

The most damning evidence put forward by Wilson-Raybould is from two text messages her chief of staff, Jessica Prince, sent to her following meetings she had with the PMO [Prime Minister’s Office]. Butts apparently told her “there is no solution here that does not involve some interference.”

Trudeau Chief of Staff Katie Telford apparently also told her “we don’t want to debate legalities anymore.”

Both of these — the Butts one in particular — suggest they knew what they were doing was not in line with the law, yet didn’t care.

The Conservative and NDP MPs on the committee will need to grill Butts on these issues. Canadians want answers.

In other words, Butts’ testimony may determine whether Trudeau’s efforts to protect SNC-Lavalin are upgraded from “inappropriate” to “illegal.”

Trudeau’s defense strategy appears to depend on carefully chipping away at Wilson-Raybould’s credibility without flatly accusing her of lying, a strategy that will presumably widen to include Philpott as well. According to the latest polls, it’s not working – Trudeau’s numbers are collapsing, Canadians say they are following the story closely, and some 67 percent of them believe Wilson-Raybould instead of Trudeau.

Tuesday on CNN’s “New Day,” host John Berman asked former National Intelligence Director James Clapper about The Intercept’s Glenn Greenwald saying he lied to Congress about the NSA program used to spy on Americans’ phone records.

Clapper denied lying to Congress in 2013, explaining he “simply just didn’t understand the question” he was asked.

“[T]he original thought behind this, and this program was put in place as a direct result of 9/11, and the point was to be able to track quickly a foreign communicant talking to somebody in this country who may have been plotting a terrorist plot, and was put in place during the Bush administration for that reason. Swedish prime minister refuses to strip citizenship: “ISIS fighters can return”

Stefan Löfven, Sweden’s Prime Minister and the leftist Socialist Party leader has ruled out the possibility of stripping Swedish Islamic State Fighters of their citizenships, and has said that they have the right to come back to the country.

Nyheter Idag recently reported that Löfven stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously warned those who were traveling in and around the region in which IS had been fighting, that those individuals who were captured shouldn’t anticipate any assistance from the Swedish government at a consular level.

The prime minster did, however, state that he would refrain from stripping the Islamic State fighters of their Swedish citizenship, asserting that it was their right to return to the country if they desired. He then said that upon their return, it would be up to the intelligence service and law enforcement to keep track of the returning terrorists whereabouts and to potentially arrest and prosecute them.

Löfven’s statement lies in stark contrast with what right-wing populist leader of the Sweden Democrats, Jimmie Åkesson, had to say regarding the issue. Åkesson stated, “If they choose to travel away to support the terrorist organisation Islamic State, in my opinion, they have used up all of their rights to call themselves Swedish. Then they should also not be a citizen.”

In a reaction to the comments given by Löfven, Paula Bierler, the Sweden Democrat’s migration policy spokeswomen, agreed with Åkesson, writing, “The people who left Sweden to join the Islamic State should be considered to have terminated their Swedish citizenship.”

Since 2012, at least 150 of the approximately 300 terrorists that left the country to fight for the Islamic State have now returned back to Sweden. According to Jan Jönsson, a local politician, at least 19 of these Islamic State terrorists are currently living in the Swedish Capital of Stockholm.

In Malmö, a southern city that’s become infamous for its no-go zones and significant Middle Eastern and North African migrant population, around twenty or so former Islamic State terrorists have purportedly been operating underground and illegal mosques and using them to recruit new radical Islamic terrorists for their jihad against the West.

Michael Helders, an anti-violence extremism activist stated that, former IS fighters are often ‘seen as heroes for young people who are at risk and radicalized.’ He added that, “It increases concern, of course, and creates instability. People are worried about their children.”

Of the 300 Islamic terrorists that left Sweden to join Islamic State and other terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria, about half have returned to Sweden, whereas 50 are thought to have been killed, while another 100 remain in the Middle East.

As the dismantling of the Islamic State continues, we can expect this issue to remain at the forefront of political debate in many western European countries.

Voters Don’t Think Evidence for Impeachment Is Likely, Reelection More Likely than Not

A majority of voters don’t think it is likely Democrats will find evidence that leads to impeachment, but find it more likely than not Donald Trump will be reelected.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds 53% of likely voters do not believe it is likely House Democrat investigations will find evidence leading to impeachment, including 29% who say it’s not at all likely.

Another 24% say it’s not very likely.

In total, 44% think it’s likely, with just 24% saying it’s very likely and 20% who say it’s at least somewhat likely.

Alphabet Inc’s Google will ban political advertising on its platform before the Canadian federal election, after the country introduced stringent transparency rules.

House Judiciary Probe Searches For A Crime To Punish Trump And Americans Who Voted For Him

The House Judiciary Committee’s Democratic Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler is a man in search of a crime. Nadler and his colleague House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff have moved the conversation from Russian collusion and are now promising to investigate virtually everything connected to President Donald Trump.

Mind you, we the tax payers will be paying for these investigations and it will drag America and the administration into another two years of endless witch hunts.

Yes, a witch-hunt.

Can you imagine if someone despised you so much that all they did day in and day out was search for something, anything, that would get those around you to doubt your intentions. Imagine having to fight every single day of your life against never ending accusations. Even when those accusations are proven false later on it won’t matter because the original lie has already been thoroughly disseminated far and wide among the population.

Why are Nadler, D-NY, and Schiff, R-CA, promising these investigations? Because they want to impeach Trump. It’s just that simple. They also want to send a message to the American people: your vote really didn’t matter because in the end it’s Congress that holds the power.

Think about that. There was never any evidence of crime that called for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to establish a special counsel. Yet, he did. In fact, he wrote the letter authorizing Trump to fire former FBI Director James Comey. Comey would’ve been fired the first day had Hillary Clinton been president.

However, obstruction charges are at the top of the Nadler list of investigations. He also promises to investigate all of Trump’s financial dealings and past business associations.

Nadler and Schiff are creating their own special counsel.

Nadler and Schiff don’t want to explain that their narrative has been debunked.

Why? The pair realize that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report will not do the damage they were hoping it would. Both Democratic leaders, supported by their party, realize that Mueller has found no evidence of a conspiracy with the Russians.

Nadler announced his probe on Monday into potential “obstruction of justice.” He will lob accusation, after accusation, against the Trump administration and his family. He will seek documents and communications from over 60 individuals connected with the White House. He will look for that needle in a haystack for as long as it takes.

Nadler and Schiff will conduct what they describe as thorough investigations. They will keep these lengthy investigations going to buy time on the clock until close to the Democratic National Convention.

Nadler will do so at the cost of our nation. Don’t be fooled. He doesn’t care about the American people or justice. In the end, this all about getting back for the Democrats.

Not getting back at Trump but at the American people who voted for Trump. This isn’t about truth and justice – those who oppose Trump don’t care about those fundamental principals.

“The House Judiciary Committee will seek documents from more than 60 people and organizations as it begins investigations into possible obstruction of justice and abuse of power by President Donald Trump,” reported Reuters on Monday.

Nadler is already setting the stage.

“We are going to initiate investigations into abuses of power, into corruption … and into obstruction of justice,” said Nadler. “It’s our job to protect the rule of law.”

This isn’t about the rule of law.

If the rule of law was important to the Democrats, they should be aghast at the abuse of power that has occurred within the Obama Administration.

Ontario police find meth smuggled into Canada through new Ford cars built in Mexico

A notorious Mexican cartel stashed bricks of methamphetamine in the spare tires of new cars before sending the vehicles to Canada by rail in a sprawling drug smuggling operation, authorities alleged Wednesday.

Ontario Provincial Police said they found 180 kilograms of meth during their investigation, which began when employees at four different Ford dealerships reported suspicious bags inside tires that were in the trunks of new Fusion cars.

Police said the cars were built at Ford’s assembly plant in Hermosillo, Mexico, before being put on northbound trains.

“The powerful Sinaloa cartel is well entrenched in that area of Mexico,” said OPP Supt. Bryan MacKillop. “We are very certain that they are ultimately responsible for these drugs.”

He said authorities first became aware of the drugs in December when Ford dealership employees in four Ontario communities — Chelmsford, Collingwood, Bolton and Newmarket — called police about the beige-taped packages that lined the tires.

The investigation, dubbed Project Sebright, ballooned to involve the Canada Border Services Agency, Greater Sudbury Police, police in New Brunswick, Quebec provincial police and Ford.

Police said nine of 14 vehicles from the same shipment, found at 13 different Ontario dealerships, contained meth.

Other cars that were part of the same shipment made their way to Quebec and New Brunswick, MacKillop said.

“We were able to proactively stop a similar subsequent shipment of cars as it crossed the border into Canada,” he said. In that case, police found meth hidden in a similar fashion in 12 of 14 vehicles they searched.

Authorities have continued to search vehicles coming into the country from Mexico, but have yet to find more drugs, MacKillop said.

“That tells us that this method of smuggling has been successfully disrupted,” he said.

Police said they haven’t laid charges and are still investigating. MacKillop said investigators believe the “logistics” of the alleged smuggling operation failed, which led to the drugs continuing on to dealerships.

“I don’t think that’s what they wanted,” MacKillop said.

He also said police don’t know when or where the cars were “exploited,” other than saying those responsible were the Sinaloa cartel, which was once led by drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who was found guilty recently of drug trafficking and murder conspiracy charges in New York.

Police noted the “creative means” to smuggle drugs into the country.

US awards Lockheed Martin $1bn contract for Saudi missile sale

Payment comes as members of Congress look to punish Saudi Arabia for its role in the war in Yemen and Khashoggi murder.

The US government said it has awarded arms manufacturer Lockheed Martin a $946m payment on behalf of Saudi Arabia for an advanced missile defence system.

The contract, announced by the Pentagon in a statement on Monday, is the first instalment of what is expected to be a $15bn deal.

In November, Saudi and US officials signed the letters of offer and acceptance formalising terms for the kingdom's purchase of 44 Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) launchers, missiles and related equipment.

As a part of the scope of work outlined by the Pentagon, obsolete systems currently in place will be updated to prepare the current Saudi missile defence infrastructure for the new THAAD technology.

The contract also allows Lockheed Martin to pay for materials, tooling and engineering development, among other work.

The Pentagon said the partial payment that would go to Lockheed Martin and prevent major delays in the production of the new missile defence system in Saudi Arabia. The payment comes as Saudi Arabia faces increasing international pressure in the wake of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The Washington Post columnist was killed at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul in October last year by a Saudi hit squad, which Riyadh said was rogue but which leaked Western intelligence assessments have reportedly concluded was ordered by Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's powerful crown prince.

A number of US politicians from both the Republican and Democratic parties have called for punitive action against the Saudis for the journalist's death and for its role in the ongoing war in neighbouring Yemen.

Senior Republicans, including Senator Lindsey Graham, have called for sanctions against Riyadh, but such calls are in contrast to the statements and actions of US President Donald Trump.
