Tomorrow morning, the SpaceX test flight of the Crew Dragon spacecraft is expected to splash down near 8:45 am ET in the Atlantic Ocean offshore Cape Canaveral. The re-entry track comes in from the northwest, crossing the Pacific coastline near Vancouver, then passing over the continental United States. Spacecraft re-entries can be very visible, as the spacecraft dissipates kinetic energy in the atmosphere. But since this is the first time a Dragon has come in over the US, no one really knows what to expect, or how visible and bright it may become. Reports are that the best visibility may be in the Carolinas, but if you're anywhere near the groundtrack, you may want to give this a shot.

 

The attached images show a discussion on the Seesat satellite tracking message forum, an article from space.com, and the approximate groundtrack across the United States. The maps show the track of the space station; this doesn't exactly match the capsule (as it will be separating hours before, lowering orbit for re-entry, etc) but it's pretty close as a general concept.

 

Q relevance: Q and POTUS have both hinted strongly that there's something important going on with space. Also there is interest in where SpaceX falls into the big picture presently. Don't know if Dragon specfically is important to follow, but this is an opportunity to see the spacecraft with your own eyes. First-hand evidence is a good thing …

Those living in parts of the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, the Piedmont region and the southeastern coast of the U.S. may be able to catch a glimpse of the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule Friday morning as it re-enters Earth's atmosphere with a fiery trail that will end over the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles east of Florida.

 

According to NASA's press kit, "Crew Dragon will autonomously undock from the International Space Station on Friday, March 8, at approximately 2:30 a.m. EST [0730 GMT]. About five hours after Dragon departs the space station it will conduct its deorbit burn, which lasts up to 15 minutes. It takes about 35 to 40 minutes for Dragon to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and splash down in the Atlantic Ocean, which is currently targeted for approximately 8:45 a.m. EST [1345 GMT]."

 

There has been a lively discussion on the satellite observer Seesat Internet List about spotting the bright plasma trail created by the Dragon capsule as it rushes through the atmosphere, quite possibly becoming bright enough to be seen even through the light of day.

 

Dragon's final ground track runs across North America, from approximately just north of Vancouver Island on the Pacific Coast; southeast to Charleston, South Carolina, on the East Coast; and out to sea over the open waters of the Atlantic.

 

Because this is the first time this re-entry vehicle has traveled this particular course, there is some uncertainty about what might be seen. It appears that the best odds of seeing a possible fireball caused by the Dragon capsule will be for those within about 100 miles (160 kilometers) of a line extending from central Kentucky to the South Carolina coast, near Charleston, from about 8:42 to 8:44 a.m. EST.

 

Observers might even be able to hear the re-entering Dragon by virtue of a sonic boom, which would create a distinct "thump" as the vehicle speeds by. The best chances to hear a boom for this to happen will likely be near the South Carolina coast.

 

If you live farther to the northwest — from roughly central Iowa, to central Illinois and southern Indiana — it's worth a try to spot the beginning of the Dragon re-entry. In the Central time zone, cast your gaze upward between about 7:34 and 7:37 a.m.

 

The Dragon capsule weighs approximately 10 tons (9 metric tons). In his book "Observing Earth Satellites" (Van Nostrand Reinhold Co., 1983), author Desmond King-Hele wrote:

 

"When a two-ton satellite enters the atmosphere, usually at a speed close to 8 km (5 miles) per second, it possesses prodigious energy of motion, roughly equal to that of 50,000 cars all traveling at 100 km (62 miles) per hour. Nearly all that energy is converted to heat and light as the satellite plunges into the thicker air. It usually begins to glow at a height of about 90 km (55 miles) and continues its firework display down to a height of 30 km (20 miles). By then it has lost most of its initial velocity, and any remaining fragments begin to fall at a steep angle. People who have seen a satellite burn up all agree that it is a spectacular sight."

 

Sadly, as of this writing, the latest weather forecasts suggest rather cloudy skies across much of the potential visibility zone on Friday morning.

n Huge Blow to Mueller, Judge T.S. Ellis Wants Manafort to be Given Credit For Time Served

 

On Thursday evening, Judge T.S. Ellis rejected Mueller’s “excessive” recommendation that Paul Manafort serve 19.5 to 24.5 years in prison after a Virginia jury convicted Manafort on 8 counts of bank and tax fraud.

 

The Reagan-appointed judge sentenced Manafort to 47 months in prison.

 

In another blow to Mueller, Judge T.S. Ellis also wants Paul Manafort to be given credit for the 9 months he has already served in jail.

 

If this happens, Manafort will only have to serve 38 months (just over 3 years) in jail.

 

“Judge wants Paul Manafort to be given credit for the nine months he’s spent in jail, after a different judge revoked his bond last June. If that happens, Manafort’s time in prison from now on would total a little more than three years,” crime reporter Shimon Prokupecz tweeted on Thursday evening.

 

Paul Manafort was seated in a wheelchair and green prison jumpsuit during Thursday’s hearing and pleaded with the judge to have some compassion, reported CNBC.

 

“The last two years have been the most difficult for my family and I,” Manafort said in his plea.

 

“To say I have been humiliated and ashamed would be a gross understatement,” he said.

 

Judge Ellis rejected Mueller’s “excessive” recommendation and gave Manafort a much lighter sentence.

 

Manafort faces sentencing in a separate case in a DC court next week.

 

A couple weeks ago, Mueller released his redacted sentencing memo on Paul Manafort in the Washington D.C. case where Manafort was on trial for his Ukrainian lobbying.

 

Mueller accused Manafort of “repeatedly and brazenly” breaking the law — recall, Mueller gave Tony Podesta immunity in this case even though just like Manafort, he failed to file a FARA form in a timely manner.

 

Corrupt Obama-appointed Judge Amy Berman Jackson is assigned to Paul Manafort’s DC case where he was charged with two felony counts and will be sentenced next week by Jackson.

 

Mueller did not disclose how many years he recommended Manafort serve in the DC case, however, under the law Manafort faces 10 years maximum prison time for two felony counts.

 

President Trump should take a blowtorch to Mueller and pardon Manafort after his second round of sentencing next week.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko described Mr Nemtsov as a "bridge between Ukraine and Russia".

 

"The murderers' shot has destroyed it. I think it is not by accident," he said in a statement published on his administration's Facebook page.

 

In a recent interview, Mr Nemtsov had said he feared Mr Putin would have him killed because of his opposition to the war in Ukraine.

 

Mr Nemtsov, 55, served as first deputy prime minister under President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s.

 

He had earned a reputation as an economic reformer while governor of one of Russia's biggest cities, Nizhny Novgorod.

Even though I’m pretty familiar with racist lies, this new talking point about Mexico sending their rapists to the United States was a new low. URANIUM One shares recorded a sharp jump yesterday as investors caught up with positive results issued by the company in Canada earlier this week.

The results were released in Canada late on Monday, missing the JSE’s trading session, and local shareholders could only trade on the data yesterday because of the public holiday on Tuesday.

Uranium One, which has mines in Kazakhstan, Australia and the US but none in SA and is majority controlled by Russian state-owned nuclear group ARMZ, was up as much as 34% on the JSE yesterday and closed 17% higher at R22,75.

Bloomberg described the share’s performance on the JSE as its best in nearly three years.

Uranium One posted a 450% jump in net earnings for the second quarter to end-June of $29,7m as production grew by a third to 2,4-million pounds of uranium.

Revenue was 71% higher at $113m and it sold 2-million pounds of uranium at an average of $58/lb. It had a total cash cost of $15/lb.

"This quarter saw a continued low cash cost with a higher than expected market average sales price," said CEO Chris Sattler.

Uranium One expects demand for uranium to come down by between 8% and 10% for the remainder of this decade, said Scott Melbye, the company’s executive vice-president of marketing.

The earthquake and tsunami in Japan in March, which damaged the Fukushima nuclear reactor and drove uranium prices down to $49/lb, resulted in safety reviews and stiffer regulations around the world. The price has since stabilised at about $50/lb.

"Projected future demand should still result in a favourable environment for low-cost producers such as Uranium One," Mr Melbye said in a presentation on Monday.

China, India and Russia have not changed their plans to build nuclear reactors, and there has been growth in other areas such as Saudi Arabia, which has said it plans to build 16 nuclear power plants by 2030.
