What do you think about the concept of a "Citizen's Veto" which would give we, the people, the power to directly block the government from enacting laws which infringe on our rights?

The problem with a democracy is a slight majority can impose tyranny against the minority. The problem with a republic is a small group of representatives can easily be corrupted and act against the interests of the people.

As we have seen, when this happens it is not enough to simply have the right to protest. Nor has it been enough to vote our representatives out of office after they have enacted tyrannical laws and rigged the system to make sure that the candidates who replace them are just as corrupt.

We, the people, should insist on having the ability to directly stop our government when it strays too far off course.

That is why I would like to propose the idea of a "Citizen's Veto" whereby citizens would have the authority to veto any law or governmental action via a referendum process.

Since new laws wouldn't be created through this veto process, we would avoid risking a tyranny of the majority. And by providing a method for citizens to directly revoke unjust laws made by our representatives, we create an important check against government power being used against us in a republic.

Maybe, by creating a "Citizen's Veto", we can finally have the power to be the true stewards of our republic.

The budget from the White House is the first the president will send to a divided Congress, and the proposal is likely to face fierce opposition from the new Democrat-controlled House. But Trump’s spending plan highlights a number of his priorities, including strengthening border security to address the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border, and tackling the opioid crisis.

“In the last two, President Trump and this administration have prioritized reining in reckless Washington spending,” acting Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought said in a statement. “The budget that we have presented to Congress and the American people, ‘A Budget for a Better America,’ embodies fiscal responsibility, and takes aim at Washington’s waste, fraud, and abuse.”

The 2020 budget, Vought added, “will balance in 15 years, end runaway spending, and secure prosperity for future generations.”

Since Trump took office, the national debt has risen more than $2 trillion and currently stands at more than $22 trillion, a record high. But the president’s budget takes aim at government spending by calling for a 5 percent reduction in nondefense discretionary spending that will keep the budget under statutory spending caps. With the proposals included in the request for Congress, projections indicate the budget would be balanced by 2034, according to the Office of Management and Budget.

The spending plan seeks to boost border security and immigration enforcement to address what Trump has said is a crisis at the southern border. Trump has long urged Congress to provide him with money to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, but had little success even when the GOP controlled both chambers. An impasse over wall funding led to a 35-day partial government shutdown that stretched from just before Christmas until the end of January.

Despite the fervent opposition from Democrats, Trump’s fiscal 2020 budget proposal will seek an additional $8.6 billion for the border wall, according to reports.

Pushing for additional wall funding, however, could lead to another partial government shutdown, Democratic leaders warned Sunday.

To further address the situation at the southern border, the president’s budget calls for increases in the workforce for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, as well as policy changes to end sanctuary cities, which Trump has attempted to penalize through other actions.

To combat the opioid epidemic, a key priority for the Trump administration, the fiscal blueprint envisions continued investments in prevention, treatment, research, and recovery. It also calls for the creation of new platforms “for delivering services to the American people” as part of the administration’s efforts to modernize the federal government.

Taking aim at higher education institutions, Trump’s fiscal 2020 spending plan requires colleges and universities “to share a portion of the financial responsibility associated with federal student loans.”

It also allocates $80 billion for veterans, roughly a 10 percent boost from fiscal 2019, and, with an eye on defense, provides investments “in the capabilities and domains critical to future conflicts," including space, artificial intelligence, and hypersonics.

The president’s full fiscal year 2020 budget request will be unveiled Monday morning.

Sure, they can have other successes in life…raising a close-knit family, successfully entering a (limited) workforce, positively contributing to the betterment of their community…otherwise proving their rehabilitated status. They have a social security number, pay their taxes, and perhaps…help their landlady carry out her garbage. However, they can feel it when they look out their window or when they turn on their television. They can feel it when they go to work…when they go to church…when they pay their taxes…like a splinter in their mind. ( ; - j )

It’s no secret that if you repeat something over and over again, you’ll start to believe it…the same holds true in this scenario. If you continually remind someone that they are a Felon, with no hope of redemption, with no hope of ever being anything other than a second-class citizen, inalienable rights stripped away for the remainder of your life…well, they’ll eventually start to see themselves as nothing more than that. This form of punishment is often worse than incarceration…because it removes ALL hope of ever escaping its bonds. That, in itself, is cruel.

Of course, there are those of you out there that will disagree, have never had momentary lapses in judgement, and will proclaim, “If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime!”. You’re absolutely correct, and being labeled a Felon should act as a deterrent…but NO ONE can do the time. Even after death, your legacy of all of your post-conviction successes will forever be tarnished and overshadowed by this Scarlet Letter. The 19 year old naive “kid”, that was convicted of a “non-violent” financial crime of passing a bad check because he hadn’t learned how to manage his money yet, will have received a “life-sentence”. It’s a shame and a miscarriage of justice.

All crimes are punishable by a maximum sentence, yet seeing the severity, level of involvement, and personal responsibility the offender has taken regarding the admission of their guilt (among other criteria), judges more times than not, reduce the sentencing to less than this, however, the branded “F” this person receives (if in Federal court) WILL NOT, and CAN NOT be removed…EVER. Well, this is the Land of Opportunity, and we, as Americans, believe in second chances and forgiveness. I would propose some criminal justice reform, whereas first-time, non-violent felony convictions (excluding Sedition and Treason) would impose whatever sentencing that the judge deems appropriate, however the Felon label will be imposed only for the duration of the Maximum Sentence outlined in the federal sentencing guidelines. For example, if you are a first-time convict of a non-violent offense, which carries a Maximum Sentence of 10 years, but the judge imposes a sentence of no time served, 3 years probation, and a fine (based off of your cooperation, remorse, etc…), you will remain a Felon for 10 years, provided you have no other felony convictions during that time. This would apply at both the State and Federal level.

By giving non-repeat, non-violent Felons some hope for their futures…something to look forward to, some incentive to “keep their nose clean” and the opportunity to better themselves…I believe this will drastically reduce the amount of recidivism in this country. Everyone needs a wakeup call at least once in their life. Let us help wake them up.

It is showing no signs of slowing down, with plans to double crude exports by 2020. In 2017, Occidental was the largest exporter from the U.S. Gulf Coast of crude produced in the Permian oilfield of Texas and New Mexico, the largest U.S. oil field.

In 2018, it was among the top three exporters of U.S. crude, according to customs data analysed by Reuters and interviews with company executives and employees.

U.S. crude exports have emerged as a major profit centre for oil companies, as shipments have skyrocketed after Washington lifted a decades-long ban of exports in late 2015. They have expanded faster than many expected, to a reco

The U.S. production boom has upended global supply and overwhelmed efforts by OPEC to restrict output. U.S. exports have doubled from the end of 2017, a lucrative opportunity for companies with access to supply and export terminals.

Occidental plans to double crude exports to 600,000 barrels per day by 2020, Cynthia Walker, senior vice president midstream and marketing, said in an interview.

"As we move into the end of this year and early in 2020 … we'll probably see a doubling of exports over that period of time," she said.

Company-level data on exports is kept secret, and the U.S. Census Bureau does not provide data, citing a law which protects confidentiality.

Occidental exports about 300,000 bpd of oil, roughly 10 percent of U.S. crude exports, a standout among the myriad trading houses, oil producers and shippers with operations in the Permian.
