Defying Trump, Senate votes to end US support for Saudi-led Yemen war

Republican-controlled chamber approves historic curtailment of presidential war powers, ahead of House vote; White House threatens a veto

WASHINGTON — The US Senate on Wednesday dealt a stinging bipartisan rebuke to Donald Trump’s foreign policy and his alliance with Riyadh, voting to end support for the bloody Saudi-led war effort in Yemen.

Lawmakers in the Republican-controlled chamber approved a historic curtailment of presidential war powers that directs Trump “to remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities in or affecting the Republic of Yemen” within 30 days.

The Senate vote was 54 to 46, with seven Republicans defying the president and aligning with Democrats.

The text now heads to the Democrat-led House of Representatives, which approved a similar measure that stalled earlier this year, and which is likely to pass the latest effort.

The White House has threatened a veto, calling the measure “flawed” and saying it would harm bilateral relationships in the region and hurt Washington’s ability to fight extremism.

But its full passage would set a historic marker. It would be the first measure passed by Congress to invoke the 1973 War Powers Resolution to directly curtail a president’s use of military powers.

“Today, we begin the process of reclaiming our constitutional power by ending US involvement in a war that has not been authorized by Congress and is clearly unconstitutional,” Senator Bernie Sanders, who is running for president in 2020 and is a sponsor of the measure, said on the Senate floor.

Republican Senator Mike Lee concurred, saying Saudi Arabia “is not an ally that deserves our support or our military intervention.”

The Saudis, he said, “are likely using our own weapons… to commit these atrocities of war. That’s not OK.”

The war in Yemen is the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with an estimated 14 million people at risk of famine.

The World Health Organization says about 10,000 people have been killed in the war between forces loyal to the Yemeni government, backed by the Saudi-led coalition, and the Iran-aligned Huthi rebels. Rights groups say the death toll is far higher.

The United States provides weapons and refueling to the Saudi coalition.

The resolution is a reminder that Congress has the legal ability to compel the removal of US military forces, absent a formal declaration of war.

Should it pass Congress, it could force Trump to issue the first veto of his tenure.

The vote may well be the first of two congressional rebukes of Trump in as many days.

On Thursday, the Senate is expected to vote on a resolution — already passed by the House — to reverse Trump’s emergency declaration on border security, after the president went around Congress in a bid to secure more funding for his wall between the United States and Mexico.

In that case too, he has promised to use his veto.

Wednesday’s Yemen vote, and the rare bipartisanship at the heart of it, came as US lawmakers have escalated their opposition to Saudi Arabia after the October murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul.

Republicans and Democrats alike have bristled over the White House’s apparent embrace of the kingdom and its leadership.

Some members of Congress have publicly stated that they suspect that powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was directly responsible for the killing, based on the CIA’s conclusions.

Sanders, using unusually blunt language about an American ally, said the United States should not “simply follow the despotic lead of a government in Saudi Arabia.”

“We will determine our military and foreign pol and not be led around by a murderous regime,” he said.

California jury orders J&J to pay $29 million in latest talc cancer trial

Reuters) - A California jury on Wednesday ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $29 million to a woman who said that asbestos in the company's talcum-powder-based products, including Johnson's Baby Powder, caused her mesothelioma.

The verdict, in California Superior Court in Oakland, marks the latest defeat for the healthcare conglomerate, which faces more than 13,000 talc-related lawsuits nationwide.

J&J said it was disappointed with the verdict and would appeal, citing "serious procedural and evidentiary errors" in the course of the trial.

The New Brunswick, New Jersey-based company denies that its talc causes cancer, saying numerous studies and tests by regulators worldwide have shown that its talc is safe and asbestos-free.

The lawsuit, brought by Terry Leavitt, was the first of more than a dozen J&J talc cases scheduled for trial in 2019. The nine-week trial began on Jan. 7 and included testimony from nearly a dozen experts on both sides.

The jury deliberated for two days before delivering its verdict, which was broadcast online by Courtroom View Network.

According to the statement, members of the US-backed armed group Maghawir al-Thawra disrupt water deliveries to the camp, using this as a bargaining chip for blackmailing and profiteering purposes.

Denise Rich’s grandson Kai Schachter reportedly dies by suicide in London

A teenage grandson of Denise Rich reportedly killed himself Monday in London. Kai Schachter, one of Rich’s six grandchildren, was 19 and one of four kids of Ilona Rich Schachter and New York art dealer Kenny Schachter.

“Kai’s death is a devastating loss, he was a hugely gifted artist with a wonderful spirit and a sense of humor that touched everyone he met,” the Rich and Schachter families said in a statement. “The family is asking for privacy at this time as they take time to grieve and gather all of the details.”

One source said Kai, enrolled at London’s Slade School of Fine Art, was heartbroken over a busted romance.

how bad is the storm in Denver from my perspective? Maybe top 5 in last 12 years. What's surprising though is everything is absolutely closed down.

Very few businesses open including restaurants (fast food) and gas stations.

Part One: The Airport

The airport was built in 1995 on 34,000 acres (53 square miles; 137.593 Sq.km) in spite of the fact that Denver already had what everyone said was a perfectly fine airport - Stapleton - which was ordered closed when DIA was built so there "wouldn't be any competition". The initial cost of this New Beast was to be 1.7 billion dollars (with a "B") but by the time they were done playing games, having problems, getting bailed out and got extra government money (and money from private corporations on top of that), it cost about $4.8 billion - obscenely over budget. I have yet to meet a local who wanted the thing built, or didn't have a frothing, rabid story about the whole mess. Words used to describe the DIA were "buried in technical problems", "poor project management", "overwhelming complexity" and "America's most inconvenient airport". It was built in a high wind area (Stapleton hadn't been) that causes it to be shut down or flights delayed often. The extensive automated baggage system so was messed up, such a circus of errors that it was worse than unusable - it was an industry joke. But it had to be built, and built there. Some say the reason that this was built and there was no stopping it, no cost spared to do so and why it was so SO overbudget and took so many years is because it's really an underground military base and a civilian detainment camp.

Adoption rules, laws, and regulations are always being altered among countries. So what’s the deal with adopting from Haiti in 2018? Here’s a quick look:

BASIC FACTS:

If you decide to adopt from Haiti, you can pick the gender of the children you adopt.

One adoptive parent has to be a United States Citizen.

An adoptive parent must be at least 21 years older than the child.

Single parents can adopt, but must be between the ages of 35 and 49 years old.

Those who are married can adopt in Haiti if they are between the ages of 30 and 49 years old and have been married at least 5 years. Now, couples who have been married for less than 5 years, but have been living together for at least 5 years, may be able to adopt. A certificate is needed from authorities to prove cohabitation for 5 years.

Those with a criminal history are NOT ELIGIBLE to adopt.

The process for adoption in Haiti from start to finish is about 24 – 30 months. Now, this does not mean you wait that long for your prospective child or children. The adoption agency you are working with will match you with your child early on in the process, and throughout the remaining many months you will be able to visit your child or children and bond with them.

Some interesting facts:

Even though the area is basically flat (with a stunning view of mountains all around, since it's in a valley), the expense and time was taken to extensively lower some areas and raise others. It is 900 feet by 210 feet big. This is over 1.5 million square feet of space. All told, there is over 6 million square feet of public space at DIA. The airport brags that they have room to build another terminal and two more concourses and could serve 100 million passengers a year. The airport flew 36 million in 2001.

The only way to get to the other two concourses/terminals from the Great Hall, or vice versa, is via the airport's train system.

There are more than 19 miles (30 km) of conveyor belt track, luggage transport cars and road in their own underground tunnels that move baggage and goods. They're so huge you can drive trucks through them, and some remain unused.

The entire roof of DIA is made of 15 acres of Teflon-coated, woven fiber glass. The same material is on the inside as a layer, also. The place looks like a bizarre (but kind of cool) scene out of "Dune", comprised of huge, spiked tent-like structures. The material reflects 90% of the sunlight and doesn't conduct heat. Microscope exploits spooky action at a distance

A phenomenon dubbed by Einstein as “spooky” might lead to very real benefits for biologists, thanks to new research by physicists in Japan. They have improved the signal-to-noise ratio of a phase-based microscope by exploiting entanglement – the connectedness between particles that allows a measurement on one of them to instantaneously fix the quantum state of another, no matter how far apart they are. This improved performance, say the researchers, could be particularly useful when studying delicate and transparent samples, such as biological tissue.

The phase of light plays an important role in modern microscopy. Standard optical microscopes record variations in the intensity of light passing through or reflecting off an object, but this approach produces very low-contrast images when the sample under scrutiny is highly transparent. Microscopes that instead exploit phase produce images by recording the interference of light rays that pass through regions of differing refractive index across a sample. Such devices are well suited to imaging living cells, for example, which are both highly transparent and extremely sensitive to intense light.

More signal, less noise

In the latest work, Shigeki Takeuchi and colleagues at Hokkaido University use entangled photons to boost the performance of a “differential interference contrast microscope” (DIM). This type of device splits a laser beam into two new beams that are focused on adjacent points on the plane of the sample. The pair of beams is scanned across the sample – being focused onto one set of neighbouring points after another – and made to recombine and interfere in a suitable detector. In this way, the device reveals the variation of refractive index, and hence composition, of the sample.

Since each photon in a laser beam experiences phase, the signal from a DIM using non-entangled beams scales with the number of photons in the beam (N). As the statistical error associated with counting discrete photons introduces a noise equal to the square root of N, the signal-to-noise ratio in an ordinary DIM is therefore also √N. But if these photons are entangled, each one of them senses the phase N times, thereby multiplying the signal and improving the signal-to-noise ratio by a further factor of √N.

In their experiment, Takeuchi and colleagues used what are known as NOON states – so-called because they are a quantum superposition of N horizontally polarized photons (with “0” photons in the vertical mode) and N vertically polarized photons (with “0” in the horizontal mode). Using these NOON states, the team generated pairs of entangled photons (i.e. where N is 2) to image a letter “Q” etched 17 nm deep in a glass plate. The researchers created pixels with an average of 460 photon pairs and were able to obtain much better contrast than was possible using single (classical) photons (see image above). In fact, the researchers found that the entanglement improved the signal-to-noise ratio of the DIM by a factor of 1.35 – slightly short of the expected value of √2 (i.e. 1.41) because of non-perfect two-photon quantum interference.

NOON a no-no?

Warwick Bowen, a quantum physicist at the University of Queensland in Australia, praises the latest work as “a milestone in quantum measurement and a step towards biological applications”. But he says that the precision achieved by the Japanese group is “far inferior to the state of the art in conventional phase-contrast microscopes”. Rather than sticking with NOON states, he thinks Takeuchi and co-workers might be better off using another form of non-classical light with very low noise levels that is known as “squeezed light”, which can be produced in bright beams and is already used in gravitational-wave detectors.

Takeuchi and colleagues are now building what they dub a “more user-friendly prototype” tailored for biological imaging. But Takeuchi admits that it will be difficult to further increase the number of entangled photons – and so raise the signal-to-noise ratio – using the group’s existing source of entanglement (parametric down conversion from a conventional nonlinear crystal). Using a NOON state with 10 or more photons, Takeuchi says, might instead be done via a special kind of crystal that uses less power and produces smaller optical losses or by using the kind of photonic circuits used in quantum computation. “This is a truly exciting challenge, both in fundamental science and applications,” he adds.

SAN JOSE — Santa Clara County officials are firing back at critics who say their policy of not notifying immigration authorities when undocumented immigrants are released from their jails led to the release of a homicide suspect who had nine detention orders issued against him.

The suspect Carlos Eduardo Arevalo-Carranza, 24, is suspected of stabbing to death Bambi Larson, 59, in her South San Jose home last month. On Tuesday, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo criticized the county’s policy of “ignoring requests” by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement that inmates about to be released be held until they are picked up by ICE. But county officials said on Wednesday that federal authorities, not they, were to blame for Arevalo-Carranza’s release.

“ICE should’ve gotten a warrant here. They could’ve gotten a warrant here,” said County Counsel James R. Williams, at a press conference late Wednesday afternoon. “And the county’s practice has always been to honor warrants that are issued.”

The disclosure Tuesday that Arevalo-Carranza is in the United States illegally, and that the county jail ignored six requests by immigration authorities to turn him over — Los Angeles County received three other detention requests from ICE — has renewed criticism that “sanctuary” policies allow serious and violent criminals to slip through the cracks.

According to officials with ICE, between October and November 2016, the agency requested three times that Arevalo-Carranza be detained at the Los Angeles Police Department’s central jail, none of which were fulfilled. From June 2016 to January 2019, the agency also asked Santa Clara County to hold him six times, according to ICE.

DA: You would think that during this massive construction they would not be able to keep this stuff secret.

AC: I think a lot of the people saw things that disturbed them so much that they would not talk about it. I know several people who worked on the project that managed to find their way down into the depths, probably close to the deep underground base, and saw things that scared them so badly they won't talk about it. DA: Where is this flux field coming from? What do you think the purpose of this is?

AC: I think that its coming from some kind of underground electrical system, because where we were there were no power lines, and the whole place was just buzzing with this free energy floating around. Very unusual. In addition, there are areas in the underground that have chain-link fences with the barbed wire tops pointed inward, like they were there to keep people in, not keep people out. All these areas are there, acres of it, and none of it is in active use. There are many terraced areas that go down. One area in particular is forbidden to go into unless you are wearing a biological protective suit. They say there is some kind of "unidentified biological fungus" in that area that attacks people's lungs.

DA: Hmmm. Some kind of way to hide something that is in this area?

AC: Well, we think that area is one that leads to deeper levels underground at the airport. But, it is surrounded by a chain-link fence and you can't get in there. We think this is the area that one of the electricians kind of stumbled into that went

down about six levels below the fourth level, and ran into some really weird stuff. He won't talk about any of it now.

DA: Real weird stuff.

AC: Also, at the airport there are what look like miniature nuclear reactor cooling towers, and I don't understand why they are there. When people asked, the reply is that they are part of the ventilation and exhaust system. Ventilation and exhaust from where?

DA: What do you think its for?

AC: I think it is all hooked up to the deep underground.

DA: They say that this place looks like some underground "holding area"…somewhat like a cattle lot….a place that could hold thousands of people. The gates, fences….

AC: The luggage transport vehicles move on a full-sized double-lane highway, and along this highway are chain-linked areas that could be used for holding areas. I don't understand why they built this the way they did, unless they planned to use it for something like that in the future.

AC: Things are escalating at an incredible rate. I think a lot of these movies in the media are trying to get us softened up for what they plan to unleash on us.

C: So, in just a matter of years, they plan to bring it out and bring people to that airport?

AC: You know, Reagan said more than once that the only thing that would bring people together would be some kind of "outside force".

DA: Exactly, I remember that. He said that several times.

AC: Yes, the Iron Mountain report. The guy that claims to be the author of it now claims that it was nothing more than a joke, but for a joke, it seems to be following the time line to the hilt, so I think it was something that made its way out and they are trying to cover that up. Everything that was in that report is happening in great detail right now. It is interesting that high officials in the Clinton administration, like Cisneros, were deeply involved with the construction of this airport. Also, there is a fellow by the name of Rodney Stitch, who writes about the total corruption in the Denver area. He is the one that wrote the book Defrauding America. He said that they had a tape of a CIA agent paying off the mayor of Denver to get the airport built. There is just so much corruption. They are selling the good American people out. We have some of our own people selling the rest of population out for a few pieces of gold.

TROU DU NORD, Haiti (AP) — Its capital is blighted with earthquake rubble. Its countryside is shorn of trees, chopped down for fuel. And yet, Haiti's land may hold the key to relieving centuries of poverty, disaster and disease: There is gold hidden in its hills — and silver and copper, too.

A flurry of exploratory drilling in the past year has found precious metals worth potentially $20 billion deep below the tropical ridges in the country's northeastern mountains. Now, a mining company is drilling around the clock to determine how to get those metals out.

In neighboring Dominican Republic, workers are poised to start mining the other side of this seam later this year in one of the world's largest gold deposits: 23 million ounces worth about $40 billion.

Haiti's annual budget is $1 billion, more than half provided by foreign assistance. The largest single source of foreign investment, $2 billion, came from Haitians working abroad last year. A windfall of locally produced wealth could pay for roads, schools, clean water and sewage systems for the nation's 10 million people, most of whom live on as little as $1.25 a day.

"If the mining companies are honest and if Haiti has a good government, then here is a way for this country to move forward," said Bureau of Mines Director Dieuseul Anglade.

In a parking lot outside Anglade's marble-floored office, more than 100 families have been living in tents since the earthquake. "The gold in the mountains belongs to the people of Haiti," he said, gesturing out his window. "And they need it."

Haiti's geological vulnerability is also its promise. Massive tectonic plates squeeze the island with horrifying consequences, but deep cracks between them form convenient veins for gold, silver and copper pushed up from the hot innards of the planet. Prospectors from California to Chile know earthquake faults often have, quite literally, a golden lining.

Until now, few Haitians have known about this buried treasure. Mining camps are unmarked, and the work is being done miles up dirt roads near remote villages, on the opposite side of the country from the capital. But U.S. and Canadian investors have spent more than $30 million in recent years on everything from exploratory drilling to camps for workers, new roads, offices and laboratory studies of samples. Actual mining could be under way in five years.

"When I first heard whispers of this I said, 'Gold mines? There could be gold mines in Haiti?'" said Michel Lamarre, a Haitian engineer whose firm, SOMINE, is leading the exploration. "I truly believe this is our answer to taking care of ourselves instead of constantly living on donations."

On a rugged, steep Haitian ridge far above the Atlantic, brilliant boulders coated with blue-green oxidized copper jut from the hills, while colorful pebbles litter the soil, strong indicators that precious metals lie below.

"Just look down," said geologist John Watkins. "Where there's smoke, there's fire."

Nearby, 8-year-old Whiskey Pierre and his barefoot buddies stared at a team of sweat-drenched men driving a narrow, shrieking diamond bit 900 feet into the ground.

"That is a drill!" shouted Whiskey, bouncing on his toes. "The man drill to get gold!"

The workers periodically pulled up samples and knocked them into boxes. The first 40 feet yielded loose rocks and gravel. About 160 feet down, cylinders of rock came back peppered with gold. At 1,000 feet down, rocks were heavily streaked with copper.

Geologists extrapolating from depth and strike reports estimate at least 1 million ounces of gold at two sites. In April, prospectors found the first significant silver ever reported in Haiti: between 20 million and 30 million ounces. And in the end, it may be copper that is the most lucrative: geologists suspect that more than 1 million tons lay in just one of many areas under exploration.

The prices of precious metals have been volatile in recent years, with copper selling for about $8,000 per ton, silver at $30 an ounce, and gold at $1,600 per ounce.

"Ultimately, I think mining is going to dwarf anything else in Haiti," says Michael Fulp, an Albuquerque, N.M.-based geologist who visited the drill sites. "Usually you've got about a one-in-1,000 chance of making a mine from the exploratory stage, but those odds are much better in Haiti because of the lack of any previous modern-day exploration and very, very promising samples."

Gold was last gathered in Haiti in the 1500s, after Christopher Columbus ran the Santa Maria onto a Haitian reef. Spaniards enslaved the Arawak Indians to dig for gold, killing them off with harsh conditions and infectious diseases. When the Spaniards learned of even more lucrative deposits in Mexico, they moved on.

In the 1970s, United Nations geologists documented significant pockets of gold and copper, but foreigners weren't willing to risk their cash in a country where corruption and instability has long discouraged outside investment.

Ironically, it was only after the catastrophic 2010 earthquake that investors saw real opportunity. Fifteen days after a seismic jolt brought down much of Port-au- Prince, a Canadian exploration firm acquired all of the shares of the only Haitian firm holding full permits for a promising chunk of land in the northeast.

"Investors want to get in at the bottom," said Dan Hachey, president of Majescor Resources, the Canadian company, "and I figured after that earthquake, Haiti was as low as it could get."

Hachey was also betting that the $10 billion in foreign assistance promised for earthquake recovery would force change and accountability.

"The eyes of the world will not allow the government to fool around," he said.

Three firms are considering mining in Haiti, but so far only SOMINE has full concessions to take the metals out of the mountains. Those permits, for 50 square kilometers (31 square miles), were negotiated in 1996 under President Rene Preval and require the firm to hire Haitians whenever possible.

In exchange for minimal permit fees, SOMINE committed to spend $2.25 million in the first two years. In addition, it will pay $1.8 million after a feasibility study, according to the contract.

Bottom line: Haitians should get $1 out of every $2 of profits, compared with about $1 out of $3 that most countries get from mining firms.

Discoveries of rich resources, whether diamonds, oil or gold, often prompt great economic booms but come with great risk of environmental, health and social problems. Chile, one of the wealthiest nations in Latin America, is the world's largest copper exporter, deriving a third of its income from the metal. Peru, with one of the fastest growing economies in the world, has privatized most of its mines in recent years, and now gets about 20 percent of its total revenues from the industry.

Though the contractual terms are generous for Haiti, there is plenty to be cautious about. Haiti's government is repeatedly rated as one of the most corrupt in the world. The mines would ostensibly be regulated by government officials responsible for enforcing environmental, mining and corporate laws, but at this point those officials don't exist and there are neither plans nor budgets to hire them.

Further, open pit mines, common around the world, are crater-like holes made up of a series of massive terraced steps that drop thousands of feet into the ground. When the resources are exhausted, usually after about 25 years, the pits can be refilled or converted into reservoirs. In many cases, the mines leave serious problems — environmental contamination, displaced communities and mountaintops torn asunder.

"In low-income countries, the dangers are substantial," said UCLA political science professor Michael Ross. In a sleepy exploration camp at sunset, Hachey and his competitor, Daven Mashburn of Newmont Mining Corp., met to talk business over bottles of Haiti's Prestige beer, bumping fists in the low-germ "cholera handshake" that has replaced the traditional palm grip after last year's deadly epidemic.

The men talked labor — Newmont got 10,000 applications for 100 jobs when one project started up last month. They talked logistics — core samples are sliced in half, bagged, and flown to Santiago, Chile, where it takes 21 days to find out how much gold, silver or copper they contain. They talked hurricanes, cholera, political unrest and, yes, the earthquake — Mashburn spent four hours buried under piles of rock in Port-au- Prince, eventually pulled out with fractures from head to toe.

Located south of Cuba on the Caribbean Sea, Haiti is still rebuilding roads and schools and working to provide clean water and sewage systems for its 10 million people, more than half of whom still live on less than $2 a day. Unemployment runs at about 70% and most of the government’s budget is supplied by foreign and humanitarian aid, which poured in after the quake.

Now, according to recent reports, a round of exploratory drilling by Canadian and U.S. companies has unearthed valuable metals. These include gold, silver and copper, which may be worth close $20 billion, and is viewed by many as a potential economic boon for this nation.

On its website, the Pulitzer Center states that Canadian Eurasian Minerals in seeking to open gold mining operations in Haiti's three northern departments this year. The company controls exploration or exploitation rights to over one-third of Haiti’s north – at least 1,500 square kilometres. Eurasian – which has tested over 44,000 samples so far – is partnered with the world’s number two gold producer, U.S.-based mining giant Newmont.

Another Canadian company, Majescor, and a small U.S. company, VCS Mining, and their subsidiaries have licenses or conventions for tracts totaling over 750 square kilometres. Altogether, about 15% of Haiti’s territory is under license to North American mining firms and its partners.

These companies have spent $30 million so far digging, drilling and testing the deposits of mostly "alluvial" or "invisible" gold that are part of the same territory that holds one of the largest gold reserves in the Americas – the Pueblo Viejo mine in neighbouring Dominican Republic. This year, Barrick and Goldcorp will begin producing at the newly refurbished pit mine, going after what they say is at least another 23.7m ounces of gold and 141.8m ounces of silver.

Extracting minerals in Haiti has been prohibitive in the past due to many issues, including political instability and resistance to mining companies. But the price of gold has held steady above $1,500 an ounce for the past year and Haiti hosts a U.N. peacekeeping force of 10,000 that will assure some security for the companies – both of which make exploration in Haiti appealing once again.

Haiti’s newly installed prime minister, Laurent Lamothe, is also supportive. Lamothe, whose slogan is “Haiti is open for business,” has pledged to make mining one of the country’s new growth industries and to change laws in order to make them more business-friendly.

In May, Lamothe told the Associated Press (AP) that his government is drafting mining legislation that will lay out rules apportioning royalties for the government and setting protections for the people and environment that could be affected by mines.

The downside

Not all Haitians are as enthusiastic as Lamothe or foreign mining companies, the Pulitzer Center adds. Pit mining can potentially poison water supplies and damage the environment. Many Haitian experts are also worried that a pit mine could be dangerous to Haiti’s already fragile environment. Haiti has only about 1.5% tree cover, down from about 90% it had in 1492.

Additionally, Haiti has not signed the international Safety and Health in Mines convention or the voluntary Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, both of which – if followed – offer some protections. In addition, Haiti is ranked as one of the most corrupt countries in the world – coming in at 175 out of 200 countries.

Lamothe, however, believes these issues can be addressed.

"The most important thing is to have the correct mining law," he told AP. "It ensures that the right portion comes to the state. It ensures that the people living in the region where the mines are, that their rights are protected. It ensures environmental protection."

In 2004, the US brought Mauritania, which actually still enslaves Black Africans, to participate in the UN “peacekeeping” forces in the land that abolished European slavery in combat in 1804.

In 2015, to flaunt their terror closer, the US is reportedly deploying Mexico as “peacekeepers” to the mix in Haiti.

Mexico is a de facto US colony where tens of thousands are forced to flee the imperial violence there, described as the ongoing drug war, kidnapping/human trafficking epidemic, and violent corruption. There ‘s no need, then, to explain what UN “peacekeeping” missions around the globe are all about.

Eleven years after the UN mission began in Haiti, it’s brought dictatorship, a virulent cholera epidemic, tens of thousands of deaths, rapes of women, men and children and more jails than ever before in Haiti’s 200 year history.

But, we fight back and, not being a full-fledged US-Euro colony, the Haitian people still control more lands, more offshore islands all the other 14 colonized countries in the Caribbean, and Haiti is still less violent than its neighbors. The Obamas, Clintons and Bushes aim to fix that problem.

Haiti is the colonial marketplace these world powers amuse themselves with, by apportioning it off, at will, to various nations and commercial allies. They don’t understand this collective soul that refuses to lose its innocence. Haiti’s innocence terrifies the psychopaths. Fren's I CAN NOT believe I forgot all about this story. But it happened 30 years ago and no body really believed it in totality.

So some 30 years ago, 4 young men who lived on Catalina Island, disappered for a couple of days. No one thought much of them going missing. All were friends, all were in young 20 somethings, all were "partiers" (drinking and smoking) good time guys. But since all 4 went missing at the same time, it was assumed they were off somewhere together, camping on some uninhabited place on the island, or on the mainland somewhere.

Well, they showed up after a few days with one helluva story. It was said that they had met a man with a large yacht who invited them to "party" on his yacht with him, possibly sail down to Mexico. The youths agreed and (in the days before cell phones) boarded the boat.

The story went on to say that the boat made a stop in San Diego to fuel up, and it was at that time the boat was raided by Coast Guard or ? (FBI? or some other agency) and they boys were basically tossed off the boat. They were told the man who owned the boat was planning on taking them to Mexico to harvest their body parts to sell on the black market. The CG rescued the lads but, their mission was to get the owner of the boat so, that's what they did. The young men were left to their own devices to get home (which did not turn out to be too difficult) and when they got home this is the story which they ALL told.

I did not believe the story, so upon seeing one of the young men, I greeted him saying, "Hey, how are you doing, Body Parts _"? his reaction was to look physically ill.

Oddly we never spoke of it again, which is probably why I had forgotten all about it.

While Everyone Sleeps, The Courts Are Abolishing All Immigration Enforcement

Congress could never get away with creating constitutional rights for illegal aliens to remain here, yet a single lower court just did so on Thursday. And where Congress would face deep reprisal in the next election, faceless judges will never feel the heat.

Conservatives fear that extreme Democrats might actually abolish ICE and all immigration enforcement, but the lower courts are already systematically abolishing ICE’s authority, nullifying immigration enforcement statutes, violating separation of powers, and constantly increasing the wave of bogus asylum-seekers that they originally spawned with other radical rulings. The latest ruling from the Ninth Circuit demonstrates that unless Republicans and the president begin pushing back against these radical judges and delegitimizing their rulings, Democrats will get everything they want without ever facing electoral backlash or even the need to win elections.

It’s truly hard to overstate the outrageously harmful effects of Thursday’s Ninth Circuit ruling. For the first time in our history, the courts have fabricated a constitutional right for those denied asylum to appeal to federal courts for any reason.

Here’s the background.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants are flooding our border, claiming the formula of “credible fear” of persecution. They get to stay indefinitely while they ignore their court dates in immigration court. Because of an amalgamation of several prior activist court rulings, mainly by this very circuit, roughly 90 percent of credible fear claims are approved by asylum officers and the claimants shielded from deportation, even though asylum status is ultimately rejected almost every time by an immigration judge. Unfortunately, by that point it’s too late for the American people, who are stuck with the vast majority of these claimants remaining indefinitely in the country. Yet rather than ending this sham incentive, the Ninth Circuit drove a truck through immigration law by asserting that there is now a constitutional right for even the few who are denied initial credible fear status and are placed in deportation proceedings to appeal their denials, not just to an administrative immigration judge but to a federal Article III judge for any reason.

In past cases, the courts merely twisted statutes and contorted their plain meaning. In this case, for the first time ever and in direct contrast to a ruling by the Third Circuit in 2016, the Ninth Circuit ruled that the immigration statute that denies the federal courts jurisdiction to hear such appeals is unconstitutional under the constitutional requirement of habeas corpus, thereby giving 7.8 billion people in the world habeas corpus access to our courts. This will allow numerous illegal aliens, including the brand-new ones entering now, to stay indefinitely while they litigate themselves into status. The ACLU, which of course led this lawsuit on behalf of a Sri Lankan migrant denied asylum, wasn’t kidding when it proclaimed, “The historical and practical importance of this ruling cannot be overstated.”

This is one of many recent violations of sovereignty doctrine, known as “plenary power doctrine.” This long-standing principle in the courts is that while aliens have due process rights against criminal punishment, they have no rights to litigate against deportation, which is a mere extension of sovereignty, other than the process laid out by Congress. This principle “has become about as firmly embedded in the legislative and judicial tissues of our body politic as any aspect of our government,” not “merely” by “a page of history … but a whole volume” (Galvan v. Press). The concept is “inherent in sovereignty,” consistent with “ancient principles” of international law, and “to be exercised exclusively by the political branches of government.” (Kleindienst v. Mandel).

This is what, at least for the time being, a gold mine looks like.

It also has become a potentially problematic issue for Hillary Rodham Clinton as she considers a second presidential run, after it was revealed this month that in 2013, one of her brothers was added to the advisory board of the company that owns the mine.

Tony Rodham’s involvement with the mine, which has become a source of controversy in Haiti because of concern about potential environmental damage and the belief that the project will primarily benefit foreign investors, was first revealed in publicity about an upcoming book on the Clintons by author Peter Schweizer.

In interviews with The Washington Post, both Rodham and the chief executive of Delaware-based VCS Mining said they were introduced at a meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative — an offshoot of the Clinton Foundation that critics have long alleged invites a blurring of its charitable mission with the business interests of Bill and Hillary Clinton and their corporate donors.

Asked whether he attends CGI meetings to explore personal business opportunities, Rodham responded, “No, I go to see old friends. But you never know what can happen.”

All sides deny that the Clintons had any role in Rodham’s appointment to the VCS advisory board.

Rodham said he has not been involved in any other deals through connections made at CGI. He said that he has never spoken to his sister or her husband about the Haiti project and that he does not think VCS chief executive and president Angelo Viard, a Democratic donor, approached him because of his family ties. Rodham declined to say who introduced him to Viard; Viard said he could not remember.

“I’m a very accomplished person in my own right,” Rodham said. He said his work with the company is to try to find investors, which he said has been challenging because of a lack of interest in Haiti.

“I raise money for a lot of people,” he said. “That’s what I basically do.”

Rodham, a former repo man, prison guard and private detective, has long been a source of controversy for the Clintons. Among other things, he and his brother, Hugh, caused consternation in the Clinton White House in 1999 for trying to operate a hazelnut-processing business in the Republic of Georgia with political opponents of the Georgian president, who was a U.S. ally at the time.

Viard said that he paid to become a member of CGI so he could attend two of the organization’s meetings, and that he met Rodham at a gathering in 2012. (Foundation officials said Viard paid a $20,000 membership fee in 2013.)

“You try to be a member so you can meet people in the same industry,” Viard said. He said he attended CGI as “a pure marketing operation.”

He said he ultimately stopped attending CGI meetings after realizing that they were largely designed for charities to mingle with possible donors. He said he thinks commitments made at CGI have done a lot of good in the developing world.

Rodham joined the board in October 2013, nine months after Hillary Clinton stepped down as secretary of state. Viard said he put Rodham on the board not because of his family connections, but because he worked for a firm, Gulf Coast Funds Management, that had access to investors.

Viard said that he and Rodham never discussed the Clintons, and that he never talked to the Clintons about Rodham. A spokesman for the Clinton Foundation said that Bill Clinton does not know Viard, and a spokesman for Hillary Clinton said she also does not know him.

But the Clintons’ image in Haiti has slipped in recent months as Haitians increasingly complain that Clinton-backed projects have often helped the country’s elite and international business investors more than they have helped poor Haitians.

Defenders of the Clintons call such criticism untrue and unfair and largely pressed by the Clintons’ political enemies. They argue that Clinton-funded programs have brought millions of dollars in investment to Haiti and have created jobs for thousands of Haitians.

But news that a Clinton family member is helping the mining company attract more foreign investors has deepened suspicion.

“Rodham is an independent guy, but this is tricky; it’s not a good sign for him to be on the board of a mining company here in Haiti,” said Leslie Voltaire, a former Haitian government official who worked closely with the Clintons after the earthquake. “The Clintons are seen as being in power here. You have to be very cautious that your family does not intervene in business here.”

Jean-Max Bellerive, a former prime minister and a potential presidential candidate in elections expected this year, joined the VCS advisory board at the same time as Rodham.

When the mine permit was suspended in early 2013, Bellerive said, Viard hired him for $8,000 to help him understand Haitian governmental procedures, as well as to introduce him to Haitian senators and advise him on how to persuade them to support the mine project.

Bellerive said that Viard offered compensation when he joined the advisory board a few months later, but that he refused it. He said he had mixed feelings about the project because he was worried about potential environmental damage and unsure whether the Haitian government was equipped to regulate such a complex enterprise.

He said he hoped that by joining the board, he would help ensure that the project was handled “responsibly.” But he said he has had “close to zero” involvement with it.

Bellerive said he was comfortable with his decision to join VCS, but thinks Rodham made a mistake.

“If I was Tony Rodham, I would not have been on the board,” he said. “He knows he did nothing illegal, but it has a high political price for his sister.”

Media Matters president facing scrutiny for derogatory comments, racial slurs in resurfaced posts

The president of left-leaning watchdog organization Media Matters is facing scrutiny over a series of derogatory comments that resurfaced Tuesday.

In a series of comments resurfaced by conservative outlet The Daily Caller, Angelo Carusone appeared to make derogatory comments about Jews, "transvestites" and Japanese people.

In one 2005 blog post resurfaced by The Daily Caller, Carusone ranted about a Bangladeshi man who was robbed by “a gang of transvestites,” appearing to be offended that the group was described as “attractive,” according to screenshots published by the outlet.

That same year, Carusone also commented on a male basketball coach who was accused of sexually and physically abusing his female players. Carusone dismissed the allegations against the coach in Japan using an ethnic slur.

Carusone also appeared to praise former Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, in one post. He separately wrote that his boyfriend was adorable, “despite his jewry.”

Media Matters did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The resurfaced posts came days after Carusone’s company published offensive comments previously made by Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Carlson said Sunday that he wouldn't apologize for a series of derogatory comments he made on the "Bubba the Love Sponge" radio program between 2006 and 2011.
