Of the Europeans who scrambled for control of Africa at the end of the 19th century, Belgium's King Leopold II left arguably the largest and most horrid legacy of all.

 

While the Great Powers competed for territory elsewhere, the king of one of Europe's smallest countries carved his own private colony out of 100km2 of Central African rainforest.

 

He claimed he was doing it to protect the "natives" from Arab slavers, and to open the heart of Africa to Christian missionaries, and Western capitalists.

 

Instead, as the makers of BBC Four documentary White King, Red Rubber, Black Death powerfully argue, the king unleashed new horrors on the African continent.

 

Torment and rape

 

He turned his "Congo Free State" into a massive labour camp, made a fortune for himself from the harvest of its wild rubber, and contributed in a large way to the death of perhaps 10 million innocent people.

 

What is now called the Democratic Republic of Congo has clearly never recovered.

 

"Legalized robbery enforced by violence", as Leopold's reign was described at the time, has remained, more or less, the template by which Congo's rulers have governed ever since.

 

Meanwhile Congo's soldiers have never moved away from the role allocated to them by Leopold - as a force to coerce, torment and rape an unarmed civilian population.

 

Chopping hands

 

As the BBC's reporter in DR Congo, I covered stories that were loud echoes of what was happening 100 years earlier.

 

The film opens with the shocking images of some of Leopold's victims - children and adults whose right hands had been hacked off by his agents.

 

They needed these to prove to their superiors that they had not been "wasting" their bullets on animals.

 

This rule was seldom observed as soldiers kept shooting monkeys and then later chopping off human hands to provide their alibis.

 

'Foreign correspondents'

 

Director Peter Bate uses documented accounts of such atrocities to present an imaginary court case against the monarch who he compares to a subsequent European tyrant, Adolf Hitler.

 

He has an actor play the bearded, heavily-set Leopold, fidgeting nervously as damning testimonies are read out, compiled by the foreign correspondents of the day, the missionaries.

Positive legacy

 

In the film's most powerful sequences we see reconstructions of the terror caused by Leopold's enforcers and agents.

 

We see a village burnt without warning and its people rounded up; its men sent off into the forests, and its women tied up as hostages and helpless targets of abuse until their husbands return with enough wild rubber to satisfy the agent.

 

This, we are told, was the "moment of truth" for the whole community.

 

If the men did not bring back enough and the agent lost his commission, he would order the deaths of everyone.

 

There is no doubt that Congo's history, and White King, Red Rubber, Black Death are almost too upsetting to bear, however Leopold did leave, albeit unwittingly, one positive legacy - the birth of modern humanitarianism.

 

The campaign to reveal the truth behind Leopold's "secret society of murderers," led by diplomat Roger Casement, and a former shipping clerk ED Morel, became the first mass human rights movement.

 

Its successors like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Kinshasa-based Voix des Sans Voix and Journaliste En Danger mean abuses in modern day DR Congo can never be hidden for long.

These ancients then categorized a specific collective of stars into what we know today as constellations. As a result of the knowledge of the sun and its location, and the location of the constellations, the cross of the zodiac was born, one of the oldest conceptual images in human history.

The police have booked a number of third-generation scions of South Korean family-owned conglomerates on suspicions they bought and used illegal substances even as the investigation into more drug dealers and buyers widens.

 

A grandson of SK Group founder Chey Jong-gun was apprehended Monday for allegedly buying liquid marijuana, the police said Monday. He is suspected of buying the drug, which is illegal in Korea, on 15 occasions and smoking it between March and May last year.

 

A grandson of Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung was also booked on suspicions of purchasing marijuana between March and May last year. Chung, who is now staying abroad, is set to be called in for questioning.

 

The suspected purchases of marijuana came to light after a man, only identified by his surname Lee and said come from a wealthy family, was apprehended for smoking marijuana in February. He too has admitted to the charges, according to local media reports.

 

Lee is said to have told the police during the probe that he purchased marijuana for Chey and Chung, according to news reports.

 

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency also announced that they have launched an internal investigation into allegations that some officers conducted a slipshod investigation into Hwang Ha-na, a granddaughter of Namyang Dairy founder Hong Doo-young.

Hwang was booked in 2015 on suspicions that she gave methamphetamine to a person identified by the surname Cho and took the drug together. Cho was found to have later wired 300,000 won to a drug dealer’s bank account, which was given by Hwang. The police referred the case to the prosecution in 2017, with a recommendation not to file charges.

 

Hwang was never questioned by police and avoided indictment while Cho was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in jail suspended for three years, which triggered suspicions that the police helped Hwang avoid punishment due to her family background.

 

In its verdict, the court said that Cho “conspired” with Hwang to take methamphetamine on three occasions. It said they used the illegal substance together in 2015 and Hwang sold it to Cho.

In a rare glimpse inside the defense Establishment's relationship with Hollywood, the U.S. Department of Energy has acknowledged that actor Charlton Heston has for six years held the nation's highest-level nuclear weapons security clearance to enable him to narrate classified films and videotapes.

 

Heston's latest hush-hush video production–"Trust but Verify"–was completed earlier this year. Heston has worked on six highly classified productions, the Energy Department said.

 

Former President and actor Ronald Reagan also holds an active Energy Department Q clearance, as the advanced classification is officially called. Q clearances are held by more than 28,000 Energy Department, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and defense-contractor employees involved in nuclear weapons programs, according to the department.

 

The department said Reagan simply retained the clearance status he gained as President. Heston's Q clearance, originally issued in February, 1983, is up for routine, periodic renewal, an Energy Department spokesman said. A Q rating is equivalent to the highest levels of top-secret clearance in the military.

 

Neither Reagan nor Heston can simply walk into the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and ask, for instance, to read through the assembly manual for hydrogen-bomb triggers. The Energy Department said that cleared individuals must show a need for specific information before they may gain access. Seeing the Heston films also entails a need-to-know–people with Q clearances themselves.

 

The Energy Department's Q clearance is apparently not Heston's only security classification. Heston said that he has done classified work for other agencies, but declined to identify them or the projects involved. The Defense Department and the Central Intelligence Agency declined to respond to inquiries about clearances that either agency may have separately arranged for Heston.

 

Charles Barnett, head of video and film production at Los Alamos and a longtime acquaintance of Heston's, said the classified relationship began by chance when he was discussing a film project with a Los Alamos scientist who assailed the poor quality of narration on a previous production.

 

"He said, 'I hope you're not going to give me that same awful narrator,' " Barnett recalled. "And I said, 'Who in the hell do you want, Charlton Heston ?' And he said, 'Could you?' "

 

It seemed ridiculous at first, Barnett said, but then he got to thinking. Even though the audiences for most of the classified films are internal–restricted to scientists, defense officials and others–Barnett said he felt production quality was still important.

 

Instead of simply dismissing the conversation, Barnett said he called Heston just to see what the actor would say. To his surprise, Barnett said, Heston agreed to the project. Barnett said Heston has never accepted a fee for his top-secret appearances.

 

And as to whether it was appropriate to involve a Hollywood star in top-secret nuclear weapons programs, Barnett said he had a simple line of reasoning: "If you could get Charlton Heston to narrate your films for nothing, wouldn't you?"

 

Barnett said Heston is the only superstar in his classified talent stable. Other narrators employed by Los Alamos, Barnett said, include local broadcasters and one person who has narrated sequences on public television's "Nova."

"I'm not trying to be dramatically secretive or anything," said Heston, who has also served as a public spokesman for the National Rifle Assn. "But I can't get into that (his other classified activities). I do work for other agencies from time to time. Most of the stuff that you do in this area is not designed for public consumption."

 

The practice of involving Hollywood figures in defense film projects dates at least to World War II, according to Howard Suber, co-chairman of the film producing program at UCLA. Much of the interest in Hollywood personalities, he added, has stemmed from their ability to attract the attention of viewers of training films and other government productions. "The problem the government always has with these films," Suber said, "is that they are incredibly boring."

 

The most recent production, according to Energy Department sources and Heston, is a tape shot partly by students at the UCLA film department. Only the opening visuals and sound track were recorded at UCLA–with classified video added at Los Alamos.

 

Earlier productions involving Heston are so highly classified that neither Heston nor the Energy Department would identify their titles nor subjects.

 

"Trust but Verify" deals with the collaboration between the United States and the Soviet Union in which each country is sending technicians to the other to verify compliance with provisions of a 1974 nuclear test ban treaty.

 

The film is classified because a specific treaty provision bars public release of pictures of technicians conducting joint verification activities without approval by U.S. and U.S.S.R. negotiators.

 

Private nuclear-weapon-control groups are prohibited from seeing the scenes that Heston narrated.

 

According to sources who have viewed it, the tape opens with Heston on a library-like set and proceeds to highly classified images of American and Soviet technicians setting up monitoring equipment at the Energy Department's Nevada Test Site. It is, said one source, "a rah-rah for the U.S. position on the test ban treaty . . . a booster film."

 

Barnett said that, unlike Heston's previous five top-secret Energy Department productions, "Trust but Verify" is intended for eventual public release.

 

Within the nation's nuclear weapons community, Barnett said, Heston is nothing short of a smash hit–even a cult figure. "He is an amazingly sharp guy and his interest and his grasp of concepts and so forth, I found to be far above average," Barnett said.

 

"It's a matter of his availability and generosity. As productions come to us to work on, people very often ask if I can get him to be the narrator, for obvious reasons."

The very concept of religion is actually rather unique to the Church, Judaism, and Islam. One could argue that the Eastern regions practiced state worship, but this was usually a more truncated idea of "the emperor was chosen by or is a descendant of the gods."

Of course, the Japanese believed the imperial lineage of their nation came from Lady Amaterasu. According to legend, Japan was created by the God Izanagi and the Goddess Izanami, themselves born of even higher/tangent beings. Izanami fell to the underworld, and Izanagi failed in his attempt to retrieve her. Afterward, he washed his face in a river and the beings Amaterasu, Susano'o, and Tsukuyomi were born. Amaterasu was the Sun. Tsukuyomi was the Moon. Susano'o was the stars. This assumes that there is a god who has the power and authority to form a judgment of your soul based on its own arbitration.

IE - most westerners assume there is going to be a trial by court, of some sort, which will obey the laws humans have written on the subject of heaven and hell - whatever those may be. These laws are arbitrary and imposed by the power of a god. God's power and authority is derived from the ability to impose such arbitrary ideas over the top of a presumed state of natural chaos.

 

This is rather silly. While there are certainly beings who will insist they can devour your soul, and there are some who can do a number on it - the very concept of a soul negates the power of any such being. They can only take what you give them and they can only act via your permission. The god worshipped in name and deeds is little more than a demon and can't stand against dragons, let alone the raw forces which bind our worldly experience.

 

The laws of emotions and suffering are ingrained into the laws of the universe. It is simply a lack of insight on the part of many that has led to the belief that emotions are anything but logical or that judgment via the divine comes from anything other than those fundamental laws.

 

In other words - there is a reason behind "good laws." The logic of goodness and righteousness is something that can be gradually understood by human beings. "Man has become like us, now." While the teachings associated with many gods may be "shortcuts" or "crash courses" on 'how to build a civilization without eating each other' - these are not ideas we are somehow unable to see the logic or wisdom of, in many cases.

 

Sodom and the place I can't spell - couple angels beamed down from the Enterprise to have a chat with Lot. The town wanted to have a gay gangbang with them. "Dust off and nuke the site from orbit" was the decision.

The case was classified and the trial held behind closed doors.

 

Dokuchayev — the last of the suspects who has not yet been sentenced — has also pleaded guilty. Dokuchayev was charged with other alleged accomplices by the U.S. in 2017 for hacking millions of Yahoo email accounts.

Or is the petition to be interpreted this way: That His Will is that we (all sentient beings) exercise our own Free Will from thought to thought, from action to action, from inaction to inaction, in a manner always based on unconditional love and loss of ego?

Or is the petition only a prayer that we recognize, or are aware of the fact that we are exercising our free will from moment to moment, 24/7/364 x __ years? And the kicker, that we fully understand the awesome power of our will, or our “focused intent”, to manifest change in our own reality? This is the power which (((they))) do not want us to understand, or remember, let alone exercise.
