Kobe's smart car commercial. He's riding in a car with a boy that's dressed as a peanut (Mr. Peanut connection?). The song playing during the commercial is "Catch us if you can" by The Dave Clark Five. Throughout the commercial the song keeps repeating "Catch us if you can."

 

Kobe and the boy turn a corner, and come face to face with an elephant. Out of nowhere comes a little girl dressed as a mouse, and starts wagging her finger at the elephant.

 

What's interesting is that Saturday, January 25 was Chinese New Year, and it is now the year of the Rat.

 

Kobe, riding with a peanut boy, saved by a mouse girl, died at the beginning of the year of the Rat. Catch us if you can.

 

Question: That painting in the commercial, behind the elephant. Is that an American city, a Chinese city, or a made up city for the painting? If it's an American city, which one is it?

You can easily argue that they didn't start naming Gen X until Nirvana, and the oldest Gen X had graduated from high school 10 years before Nevermind was released. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan was 1964, Nirvana was 1991. 27 years separate those 2. Generations are 18 years long. If we were going to say that GenX started in 1982, culturally, that would mean that our cultural touchstones were pretty weak. Michael Jackson, Madonna, Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Bon Jovi. No one wrote a story saying "wow, these young folks are called Generation X, and they like corporate plastic crap, what it is that we're selling them"

 

I should point out that a bunch of the stuff that you're saying sounds about accurate. There just wasn't any Beatles at the Ed Sullivan in 1983 that we were able to identify as something that was part of a new generation, with a name. It took 8 years to get to Nirvana and the Gen X name.

If you watch the left landing gear, you will see a white puff coming from it, as it lands. The chopper is vaulted in the opposite direction.

 

My theory is that a gas charged shock broke (piston escapes cylinder) and pogo-ed it into the blades opposite.

Not a pilot but why didn't the chopper autorotate? Is that function automatic when engine power fails, or does the pilot have to do something to disengage the rotor from the drive shaft? I'm thinking something mechanical prevented autorotation from making the landing more gentle.

If flying in VMC = Visual Meteorological Conditions, which means you have enough visibility to safely avoid other air traffic and terrain. IIRC it's at least 5 statute miles. You must also maintain separation of clouds and any other meteorological conditions that would obstruct visibility. Any time you are flying VFR then you squawk 1200.

 

Flight into IMC =Instrument Meteorological Conditions, basically flying into clouds, fog, etc. requires coordination with ATC and filing an IFR flight plan. This can be done in the air. When you are under IMC and flying under IFR you are assigned a squawk code.

 

So depending on the weather at the time the pilot should have either avoided any weather or filed for IFR and then would be given directions from ATC. But the pilot would also use his charts to know and avoid any terrain or towers, buildings, etc.

 

Hope that helps. Been a while since I've flown but that's it in a nutshell.

At 2:30 in vid related, Burbank Tower told the pilot to keep his squawk (iow, as previously assigned, not 1200). Then talking to Van Nuys Tower, he said he wanted to be handed off to Approach, so he would have had no reason (and not be permitted) to change it. He reads back the handoff frequency correctly.

 

SoCal asks him to IDENT at 3:57 and then at 4:03 SoCal says he was on a 1200 (VFR) squawk which makes no sense, unless he improperly changed it (why?), or the controller saw the IDENT of another aircraft. Even under normal circumstances, this would be unusual.

 

These recordings raise more questions than they answer. The raw ADS-B data, if any was captured publicly might be interesting.

Squawk is a function of Mode C. 1200 is a generic code for aircraft under VFR. Especially in busy airspace, or when you request it, you may be assigned a discrete code by ATC so they can keep track of you and provide services. You can tell he had one assigned since the controller told him to "remain that squawk." Nobody says that if you are 1200.

 

ADS-B is a newer system that works differently than Mode C, and provides significantly more information than just the 4-digit octal identifier.

You can make good use of your intuition. I use it in my business to close deals. I've always told spouse anon I could sell anything - products, real estate, cars, whatever. When you can read people or are intuitive (and are knowledgable about the product) it's like shooting fish in a barrel.
