"Project Kennedy": JPMorgan Tells Thousands Of Workers To Work From Home

America's largest bank is going on lockdown.

According to Bloomberg, JPMorgan is asking thousands of US-based employees to work from home in test of "virus contingency plan" for closing domestic offices should the coronavirus spread. As part of the test, managers have requested that about 10% of staff across its consumer bank work remotely as part of the plan’s resiliency testing, which has been code-named “Project Kennedy" (it wasn't clear why JPM picked that name for the project). And since JPMorgan’s consumer bank has 127,137 employees, the most of any of the firm’s divisions, that means that over 12,000 workers will be working from home for the foreseeable future.

As the coronavirus spreads, banks around the world have been scrambling ensure they can keep their businesses running and avoid a worst-case scenario by restricting travel, splitting up teams and traders amid different locations, and quarantining staff. As Bloomberg notes, some are also "dusting off regulatory plans for keeping “critical operations” open through a potential pandemic, some of which describe things like how far apart traders should sit from each other, or how many can work remotely."

The key test for JPM's will assess its telecommuting policy on a sampling of employees across businesses to ensure kinks are worked out before the plan needs to be rolled out more broadly in the event of a pandemic, one of the people said.

In other words, JPMorgan thinks it's just a matter of time before it gets… worse.

It wasnt exactly clear how JPM's client-facing bank tellers will do their job by teleconference. While technology has made it possible for more professionals to do their jobs remotely, working from home generally isn’t an option for branch workers like tellers and bankers who deal directly with customers. JPMorgan had 4,976 branches around the country as of the end of December that are filled with thousands of employees who have to show up to work for business to run.

JPMorgan’s leaders have been double-checking contingency plans to be sure the firm can continue to serve customers in the event of widespread disruptions. The moves are part of broader resiliency planning at the bank. The firm last week followed the lead of major US corporations in restrictring non-essential international travel for all employees and has been urging workers to test their remote-access capabilities. JPMorgan has also been testing systems at backup trading sites over the past few days in case workers need to be moved off of the main trading floors in New York and London.

There is a silver lining: with hand sanitizer sold out virtually everywhere, the bank is providing that precious commodity - extra hand sanitizer - to customer-facing branch workers and taking extra steps to sanitize offices, branches and equipment, including elevator call buttons and door handles, according to a memo from Co-President Gordon Smith to consumer bank staff on Friday.

And just to nip any potentially viral problems at the bud, JPMorgan has been encouraging consumers to access bank services and products through digital channels instead of walking into branches when they can.

BBC Publishes Leaked Iran Footage Showing Bagged Bodies Of Covid-19 Victims Piling Up

More shocking leaked footage published by the BBC shows bodies piling up at a local morgue in Qom, said to be victims of the country's spiraling coronavirus outbreak. But on Tuesday the supreme leader ordered the armed forces to assist Health Ministry in combating the spread.

=US Will Provide Turkey Ammunition For Idlib, Says Top Envoy==

A top US official announced Tuesday that America is willing to supply Turkey with ammunition amid its ongoing battle to push back the Syrian-Russian military offensive in Idlib province.

"The U.S. is willing to provide ammunition to Turkey for its operation in Idlib, northwestern Syria, U.S. special envoy for Syria James Jeffrey said Tuesday," Turkey's Daily Sabah reports.

The Syrian and Turkish armies have in recent days entered a dangerous heightened state of open war. No less than three Syrian jets have been downed in recent days, and over dozen Turkish drones have reportedly been shot down in the past week.

This after last week a likely Russian airstrike killed 33 Turkish troops, which Turkey blamed on Syrian forces, apparently not wanting a confrontation with the more formidable Russians, including the potential for disrupting deepening economic and defense ties with Moscow (such as Russia's S-400 systems transfer).

Turkey previously requested Patriot missiles from Washington to protect against Russian and Syrian air power, however. While the White House has remained cool on giving Ankara outright military support in Idlib, some within the US administration are said to be strongly considering the Patriot request.

On Tuesday the Daily Sabah reports further that "U.S. Ambassador to Turkey David Satterfield also said the U.S. is considering the Turkish request for air defense systems."

Turkish state media now reports 55 of its soldiers have been killed in Idlib over the past weeks, though also claiming a dubiously high number of 2,557 soldiers killed on the Syrian Army side.

Ankara has lately urged greater NATO support as well; however, the collective defense Article 5 doesn't apply in this case, given Turkey has suffered no attacks on its own soil, instead it's engaged in operations on foreign soil.

The document reads: ‘Translations of the New Testament, the Qur’an and other Christian or Muslim literatures need marginal glosses, and introductions that emphasize continuity with Jewish heritage of both Christianity and Islam and warn readers about antisemitic passages in them…

There are several themes in the New Testament that have come under fire for their use as justification for anti-Semitic attitudes.

Musician uses algorithm to generate every possible melody to prevent copyright lawsuits

A musician and lawyer has used an algorithm to generate every possible melody in an attempt to end music copyright lawsuit claims.

Working with programmer Noah Rubin, Damien Riehl built software capable of generating 300,000 melodies each second, creating a catalogue of 68 billion 8-note melodies.

The melodies were then copyrighted and released into the public domain in the hope of stifling litigious musicians.

Citing famous examples of music copyright infringement lawsuits, Mr Riehl said his motivation was to demonstrate that the number of possible melodies is finite and therefore liable to patterns being repeated unintentionally.

This was the case when George Harrison was sued for allegedly stealing the melody of My Sweet Lord from He's So Fine by the Chiffons, according to Mr Riehl. The litigation lasted for nearly three decades, during which the former Beatle was found guilty of "subconscious plagiarism" by a US judge.

More recently, singer Sam Smith was forced to settle a copyright dispute with Tom Petty over the apparent likeness between his Grammy-winning song Stay With Me and Petty's hit I Won't Back Down.

Smith claimed he had never heard Petty's song, nor the three-note descending melody in the chorus that he was accused of stealing. The UK musician's representative at the time said the likeness was "a complete coincidence" but an out-of-court settlement saw Petty credited as co-writers of the track.

The melodies created by the algorithm were stored in MIDI form onto a small hard drive, which now contains "every melody that's ever existed and ever can exist".

"The copyright system is broken and it needs updating. Under copyright law, numbers are facts, and under copyright law, facts either have thin copyright, almost no copyright, or no copyright at all" Mr Riehl said in a recent TedX Talk explaining the project.

President Trump called for further rate cuts after the Federal Reserve slashed rates by half a percentage point

WASHINGTON/TOKY0 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates on Tuesday in an emergency move to shield the world’s largest economy from the impact of the coronavirus, as Group of Seven finance officials pledged unspecified “appropriate” policy moves.

The Fed said it was cutting rates by a half percentage point to a target range of 1.00% to 1.25%. The decision was unanimous.

“The fundamentals of the U.S. economy remain strong. However, the coronavirus poses evolving risks to economic activity,” it said in a statement.

President Donald Trump said a half point cut was not enough.

The coronavirus, which emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, has spread around the world, with more new cases now appearing outside China than inside.

It has decimated international air traffic and hit sports events, trade exhibitions, concerts, book fairs, prayer meetings and other large gatherings worldwide.

There are almost 91,000 cases globally of which more than 80,000 are in China. Infections have appeared in 77 other countries and territories, with Ukraine the latest to report its first case.

China’s death toll was 2,943, with more than 125 fatalities elsewhere.

Finance ministers from the G7 group of rich countries were ready to take action, including fiscal measures where appropriate, Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso said. Central banks would continue to support price stability and economic growth.

“We reaffirmed our commitment to adopt all appropriate policy steps to protect the economy from downside risks posed by the coronavirus, and that we stand ready to cooperate further on timely and effective measures,” Aso told reporters after a G7 call.

He offered no quick fix and said the desirable policy response would vary from country to country. Asked if all appropriate policy steps would include both monetary and fiscal measures, Aso said: “Yes, anything will be included.”

Trump said the Fed needed to ease rates further to “come into line with other countries/competitors,” Trump tweeted.

“We are not playing on a level field. Not fair to USA. It is finally time for the Federal Reserve to LEAD. More easing and cutting!” he tweeted.

AGGRESSIVE CONTAINMENT

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin applauded the “non-political” Fed move and told the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee that G7 finance ministers and central bank governors had agreed to “do everything possible” to limit economic harm.

He said the United States was not considering lowering tariffs on goods from China, after a bruising trade war with the world’s second-largest economy, but would look at all options.

Global stock markets seesawed in volatile trade and gold prices rose more than 2% after the Fed move. Shares in Europe rose to trade more than 2% higher on the day.

Global stocks suffered a rout last week on fears that the disruption to supply chains, factory output and global travel caused by the epidemic could deal a serious blow to a world economy trying to recover from the U.S.-China trade war.

About 3.4% of reported coronavirus patients had died, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva. As a percentage, seasonal flu, which infects hundreds of thousands each year worldwide, kills far fewer.

But the coronavirus outbreak, also known as COVID-19, could be controlled, he said.

“To summarize, COVID-19 spreads less efficiently than flu, transmission does not appear to be driven by people who are not sick, it causes more severe illness than flu, there are not yet any vaccines or therapeutics, and it can be contained.”

China - where new coronavirus cases have been falling sharply and Tedros said the 129 in the last 24 hours was the lowest number since Jan. 20 - is increasingly concerned about the virus being brought back into the country by citizens returning from new hotspots elsewhere.
