Explain to your students that China dropped a Virus on its own people that they quite possibly developed to be most deadly to certain ethnicities, and accidentally developed one that was deadliest to them. We could very easily be looking at flu like numbers. You could give credit to the best healthcare workers in the world, here in our country. You could possibly give credit to our superb government and military officials aiding our President in this effort. And you could also easily assume China made a blunder and shit their pants. Effective the end of the day Friday, March 13, all campus-based, in-person classes at UW-Eau Claire will be suspended through Friday, March 20. ALMOST THREE years ago, Jim Yong Kim, then president of the World Bank, announced an innovative idea to use capital markets to help poor countries cope with pandemics. The bank launched a specialized pandemic bond and derivatives fund that would pay a handsome interest rate to investors, on the understanding that investors would lose money if the bonds were needed to fight a spreading disease. The pandemic bonds have yet to pay out. Now is the time.

 

Mr. Kim said in June 2017, at the time of the launch, “We are moving away from the cycle of panic and neglect that has characterized so much of our approach to pandemics.” It was a noble goal, but the cycle remains. The new coronavirus disease, covid-19, is spreading around the world, people are panicking, and many poor countries with weak health systems stand to be hit exceedingly hard. The coronavirus transmits between humans and has a high mortality rate among the elderly, according to tentative data from China, where the outbreak began. Low- and middle-income countries are precisely those that the World Bank bonds were designed to help out, and,

as Bill Gates pointed out last week, their health-care systems are already “stretched thin.”

 

The World Bank’s Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility grew out of the Ebola pandemic in 2014-2015 that killed 11,314 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. After-action studies concluded that the world needed a well-funded, rapid-reaction mechanism, a sort of financial firefighting team that could deploy rapidly in a crisis. The PEF has two channels: one an insurance window that would pay out from the bonds and derivatives, designed to help the poorest countries cope with a cross-border, large-scale outbreak of certain diseases; the other, a cash window for containment of illnesses not eligible for the first. The cash window has been used for the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Now it’s time to open the PEF insurance window. The fine print specifies that funds will be released when at least 20 people have died in the country where an outbreak began and in at least one other country, as long as both of those countries are eligible for funds from the World Bank. The PEF insurance funds can be released only when an outbreak is growing, and the first possible payout is 84 days after the start of the outbreak. In this case, that means the first payout date could be March 23.

 

Covid-19 has caused more than 3,000 deaths around the world, and the number is growing. The maximum potential payout from the PEF insurance window is $195.83 million. Investors will suffer, but they knew the risks. The World Bank should open the window as soon as possible.

He said his China-based Dairy Queen franchises were seeing little to no business, and he noted Apple’s recent announcement that the company would fall short of its first-quarter guidance because of recent of store closures in China and supply-chain disruptions. Berkshire holds 5.6% of Apple’s stock.

 

“I have heard that the summer is not likely to cause the end of this,” Buffett told CNBC.

He also appeared to suggest that early efforts to contain the illness have had limited success as the virus continues to spread to new countries.

 

“The Gates Foundation is very active in trying to be helpful on this, and Bill says the CDC is the best in the world,” Buffett said. “And we’ve got terrific resources in this country, but a pandemic is a pandemic.”

The investing icon’s comments came amid reports that the coronavirus outbreak in countries outside China has worsened, especially South Korea and Italy, which reported a spike in the number of confirmed cases in recent days.

 

South Korea raised its coronavirus alert to the “highest level” over the weekend, with the latest spike in numbers bringing the total infected there to more than 750.

Sure it does. It's one of the few essential supplies that doesn't go bad in time. Eventually, people will use it up.

 

Also. Worth noting that people who do have excess money like to buy shit up when it gets in high demand. Then, when said good becomes in high demand and people have no where to buy it, people will begin to sell their stash at higher mark ups. Think about concert tickets and sporting events. Very common for scalpers to buy up all available supplies just so they can control the supply and tax the sale. On a side note, many of those sporting events are now cancelled. People need new scams. TP is so hot, right now. Might as well follow the trend.

 

People are funny creatures. Especially, when there are 2 or moar of them together. When one sees the other with something that the first doesn't have, they immediately want. I've worked in a grocery store for years of my life. There are many different ways that we psychologically exploit consumers. Ordinarily, one would expect a full shelf of goods would be ideal to showcase to one's customers. This is not the case. In fact, consumers become intimidated by the nicely stocked shelves, and tend to buy less. Perhaps, because they don't want to take away from the pristine display. But quite often, when they see a low supply on the shelf, they don't even ask why the product has dwindled, they just grab, thinking it's a "sure bet". Since they know plenty of others had also bought what they now will, they automatically feel reassured by their purchase, no matter how ridiculous it may be.

 

It's crazy, but this is one of many reasons why I don't trust people in crowds. They become irrational very quickly, and easy to exploit/manipulate. The elite know this, and have been using it against the masses for centuries, if not longer.
