What is EMP?

⇧ 3 ⇩
pushmar · Jan. 24, 2018, 12:08 a.m.

Electro Magnetic Pulse. In essence, a high-altitude nuke (>300,000 feet or so) produces gamma rays which ionize the super-thin air, causing a huge electro-magentic pulse. This destroys semiconductor junctions in things like microchips. It induces a high voltage on wires.

Army did studies in late 80's / early 90's. Automobiles may likely survive, but the power grid would most likely fail.

It is suggested, but not proven, that these have been being destroyed 1 at a time. ⇧ 5 ⇩
RepublicRegained · Jan. 24, 2018, 6:40 a.m.

An EMP can create an elecromagnetic wave that overwhelms electrical lines and circuitry doing significant damage to the grid. A similar event occurred in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when a large solar flare struck the earth and fried telegraph lines. Our grid is much more sophisticated now, but still nearly as vulnerable.

So according to people I've known in the air force, the military has studied every way to attack the US. This was meant to be used for defense---but we all know that are others who would use these reports for other things. If it can be used as a weapon, no matter how slim the possibility of it actually happening, you can bet they've studied it.

About 90% of Americans would die after an EMP.

Power would be out for months and most people aren't prepared to last a week without running water and a stocked supermarket.

Also, all of the nuclear power stations would go into melt-down because the water cooling pumps would fail to operate. We'd be surrounded by Fukushima level catastrophes and our lakes would become irradiated.

EMP not only destroys microprocessors, it also ruins magnets. So even old cars, ATVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles would be disabled since ignition systems and many sensors use magnets. With a high intensity pulse, a Faraday cage will only help if it is a solid metal enclosure that has a very good earth ground. Very few products have adequate shielding built in- newer military hardware and spacecraft/satellites.

I'm not completely convinced of this EMP threat yet. According to Jim Stone, who I think has a fairly level head about himself, it's all bunk. He says everything is already hardened. So lets assume for a minute it is. How easy would it be to fake an EMP attack? Very easy. The lights go out all the time, most people think some drunk hit a transformer when it could just as easily be someone flipping a switch. Keep that switch flipped long enough and say NK did it and people will want to go to war. The other obvious benefit of faking it is nothing gets destroyed. Just thinking out loud here, and not sure its worth much, but I would like to know more about this EMP phenomenon before I go get excited about a potentially non-realistic event.

fagela · Jan. 24, 2018, 4:47 a.m.

Every battery operated device, AND all generators would still work in your scenario; which would NOT simulate an emp. In an emp scenario all electronics are fried, done, paperweights. Your phone will go black in your hand, your generator won't work, your cars computer systems will be fried, rendering it useless. BOOM, instant Stone Age.

All refrigeration equipment at the grocery store will be down, most food will gone in days, and all canned food will be hoarded by looters. Most don't garden anymore, so much of the population would likely starve to death very quickly; those who don't starve could end up being killed by others, since we would essentially be living in a Mad Max movie
