Polis accepting outside money even after pleading independence from wealthy donors in campaign

Private dollars have flowed to the governor’s office for decades, but Polis’ embrace of the arrangement is particularly notable.

In his 2018 campaign, the wealthy technology entrepreneur and former congressman spent more than $23 million from his own pocket and limited campaign donations to $200 — all to demonstrate he wouldn’t be beholden to powerful special interests.

Taken together, private dollars are driving many of the Polis administration’s top priorities in the first 18 months of his term — all without disclosure to the public until now.

The donations operate outside the state budget with limited oversight and transparency, and continue a pattern from previous governors. At least three of the grants accepted by the governor’s office include confidentiality clauses that limit the information available, according to documents obtained by The Sun. And four donorsfunneled money for the grants through other organizations, hiding the true source.

The benefit to the governor’s office from such arrangements is easy to see: Polis gets money to hire an additional staffer who can help him reach the lofty goals he set in his campaign. And it comeswithout the scrutiny of Coloradolawmakers through the state budget process nor the political baggage from expanding the size of government.

Similarly, the advantages for donors are apparent:The money allows the advocates to give their issues a higher priorityin the administration through a position that advises the governor.

“That’s sort of the quid pro quo of philanthropy, and society is ultimately the winner,” said Bruce DeBoskey, a philanthropic strategist in Denver.

He added: “There’s nothing wrong with it inherently, in my view. But it needs transparency, so there is also accountability.”

To critics, the practice represents government-for-hire, and the donor-funded initiatives areripe for potential conflicts of interest. “The practice of allowing private interests to pay their way into positions of authority in state government offices does not serve the public interest,” Tiger Joyce, the president of the American Tort Reform Association, said in a statement.

Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers tell The Sun that the donations need more scrutiny.The bipartisan legislative budget committee is considering legislation to force more disclosure from the administration, a move that came in part from earlier reports by The Sun and CBS4 about spending in the governor’s office.

The Forgotten Payroll Tax

It's a huge tax that most Americans don't understand. And most of those who support leviathan government want to keep it that way. They're betting on the apathy and ignorance of the average American when this tax is discussed.

So they hope you'll just forget about this burdensome tax, which has been raised dozens of times over the last 40 years, and turn your attention to other things. If one of these leviathan enthusiasts was at your side now, he'd ask if you didn't want to forget about this article and read something else. Maybe turn to the sports pages, he might suggest, invoking a beer and circuses logic.

Still, properly understood, it's hard to forget how much this regressive tax takes from all of us. I'm speaking of the payroll tax, which is used to pay for two very financially questionable social insurance systems, Social Security and Medicare. These are shady systems with trust fund assets that have been pillaged over the years to pay for other government programs, a putrid, robbing Peter to pay Paul practice that, when used in the private sector, usually ends with people sent to the hoosegow for many years.

Yet these social insurance systems have, until the last generation, escaped most public scrutiny, criticism and analysis. Indeed, despite their mismanagement, Social Security is, and has been, incredibly popular with tens of millions of Americans. And this has been going on throughout my life, regardless of who was in power.

As a young man, some 35 years, I remember when I started to pay this tax. When I asked about it, I can hardly ever remember anyone uttering a harsh word about Social Security. There were few critics then. And those hardy souls who said there were problems with the system usually were either ignored or ridiculed in major media outlets, depicted as vicious people who ate babies for breakfast after they threw grandma out into the cold. Other taxes would be sometimes questioned, but not the payroll tax.

Almost everyone understands the destructive powers of the income tax. Indeed, a great libertarian once wrote a brilliant little book linking it to the birth of big government in America.1 In recent years, lobbying groups have formed to reduce or eliminate the estate tax, which destroys small family businesses across our nation, costing thousands of jobs. Many think tanks have correctly preached the virtues of smaller capital gains taxes. Some have even taken these arguments to their logical conclusions and have called for the end of the capital gains tax.

Taxes on savings have led many to question why there is a penalty on thrift. Even that great Bensonhurst busdriver, Ralph Kramden, in an episode of "the Honeymooners" devoted to the nightmares of tax returns, asked, "You have to pay a tax on savings accounts?" Yes, indeed Kramden's $75 bank account was–and still is some 50 years later—subject to a tax. But few have pondered the effect of the payroll tax. It is a tax that has gone from being another nuisance tax to a tax that now takes an enormous part of our income and will likely take much more.

That's because, I believe, there are few people who understand the pricey payroll tax. And there are even fewer Americans who even know what the correct rate is (Hint. It's higher than you probably think it is). The payroll tax rate now is a total of 15.30%. It is split between the worker and the employer. And, given the shaky foundations of the Social Security/Medicare systems, we will likely soon hear, once again, that these systems "must be saved."2

This, of course, is a euphemism for increasing payroll taxes. It is another way of saying: "OK, sucker taxpayers, now you pay more." Already, the suckers are shelling out quite a bit. They pay more than most know.

For example, according to the Congressional Budget Office, 42% of American families are paying more in payroll taxes—taxes that go to pay for Social Security and Medicare—than they pay in income tax. And here, once again, is another source of confusion about payroll taxes.

The 42% figure doesn't include the amount that your employer pays on your behalf. So when public officials quote the 7.65% rates for the system they are either ill informed or deceptive. (Actually, either one is a good bet. Nevertheless, since most pols are Social Security shills, my money—or the measly amount that remains after Uncle Whiskers has picked my pockets—is on the latter).

When the employer paid portion of the tax is added, then the percentage of American households that pay more in payroll taxes than income taxes is 74%. Since your employer is paying the tax on your behalf, it certainly is reasonable to include the higher figure. However, I have heard more than one defender of the system, such as my clown congressman, say that payroll taxes are "only 7.65%."

Right.

Anyone who doubts that the tax is actually 15.30%, who believes tall stories of our leviathan loving pols and administrators who never have a bad word for this system, is invited to speak with the average independent contractor. Ask this entrepreneur if it is "only" 7.65%. The independent contractor has no boss so this poor schmuck—whose crime is that he or she is trying to build a business in a nation run by career pols who hate commerce—is the on the hook for the entire tax!

Given the sleazy nature of how the system has been run from day one, the taxes are likely to go up again and again. Indeed, numerous Social Security/Medicare experts have predicted that the payroll taxes will have to be raised somewhere between two percent and ten percent over the next few years just to keep all the promises made over the years by past Congresses and presidents. Many of these politicos had a nasty habit in the 1950s, 60s and 70s of raising benefits just before elections, then passing the costs of their "generosity" to the next generation.3

We are the next generation. And the rising rates are a consequence of these long forgotten pols.

Gov. Jared Polis announced Wednesday evening that he plans to extend the statewide mask mandate, which was set to expire this weekend.

The governor first announced the mask mandate on July 16 in response to a rising number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state. It was set to last for 30 days unless extended.

Data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment show the hospitalization rate has begun to decrease slightly in recent weeks.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cloth face coverings are not intended to protect the person wearing the mask, but rather those around them.

“Masks are most likely to reduce the spread of COVID-19 when they are widely used by people in public settings. The spread of COVID-19 can be reduced when masks are used along with other preventive measures, including social distancing, frequent handwashing, and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.,” the CDC says on its website.

Polis’ order requires face coverings to be worn in indoor public places. It applies to people 10 years old and older.

People who cannot medically tolerate a face covering are not required to wear one.

Feds Arrest Owner of LA Investment Firm That Managed Over $1B in Assets

The founder and former CEO of an investment firm that specializes in debt instruments was arrested Tuesday on federal charges alleging he falsified financial records to fraudulently inflate the value of the funds he managed, allowing him to charge investors millions of dollars in unauthorized fees.

Brendan Ross, 47, of La Canada Flintridge, who founded Direct Lending Investments in 2012, was taken into custody by special agents of the FBI, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In conjunction with the unsealing of the criminal case, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil complaint against Ross, alleging he defrauded investors.

The arrest stems from a grand jury indictment handed down July 30 that charges Ross with 10 counts of wire fraud based on a scheme he allegedly executed between late 2013 and early 2019 to defraud investors in funds managed by DLI, a firm he still owns. Each of the 10 wire fraud counts carries a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.

Ross resigned as CEO in March 2019, and soon after the SEC filed a civil complaint against DLI, which resulted in the appointment of a court-ordered receiver in early April 2019, prosecutors said.

By the summer of 2017, only five years after Ross founded DLI, the firm had over $1 billion in assets under management, according to court papers, which state that Ross directed DLI to invest the funds’ assets in, among other things, a company that loaned money to small businesses and retailers.

The DLI funds made money when the loans performed, meaning that the borrowers made timely payments. The indictment alleges that, rather than disclose some of the loans were not performing, Ross falsified monthly reports to make it appear borrowers were making payments.

As per the space agency statement, public release of scientific data from Chandrayaan-2 for global use will begin in October 2020, wherein details for accessing the data will be provided.

While the Chandrayaan-2 failed to make a soft landing on the lunar surface, its orbiter continues to perform "as per the design providing valuable scientific data" and continues sending pictures back to Earth.

It began its voyage on 22 July from the ISRO’s spaceport on the eastern coast of Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, but lost contact with the ISRO's Earth Station just minutes before the scheduled soft-landing near the Moon's south pole.

And every real autist thinks this way by default….if a prediction or guess turns out false, it's instantly discarded and forgotten about. You hold dozens of these parallel guesses in your mind at any given time, tracking how events each day fit against each one.

It was much better in the early days, but nowadays if you don't understand how to look for the real minds on the board and filter out the noise, you will almost certainly come away with a very scattered and mid-witted view of the analysis.

ESPECIALLY if you come when Q is quiet, a lot of oldfags go quiet and the void is filled with shitposting and shills until Q comes back.
