Federal government makes $800m push for digital business transformation

There was a time when the merest mention of gold manipulation in "reputable" media was enough to have one branded a perpetual conspiracy theorist with a tinfoil farm out back. That was roughly coincident with a time when Libor, FX, mortgage, and bond market manipulation was also considered unthinkable, when High Frequency Traders were believed to "provide liquidity", when the stock market was said to not be manipulated by the Fed, and when the ever-confused media, always eager to take "complicated" financial concepts at the face value set by a self-serving establishment, never dared to question anything.

 

All that changed in November 2018 when a former JPMorgan precious-metals trader admitted he engaged in a six-year spoofing scheme that defrauded investors in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium futures contracts. John Edmonds, then 36, pled guilty under seal in the District of Connecticut to commodities fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, commodities price manipulation, and spoofing, a trading technique whereby traders flood the market with "fake" bids or asks to push the price of a given futures contract up or down toward a more advantageous price, and to confuse other traders or HFTs which respond to trader intentions by launching momentum in the other direction. As FBI Assistant Director in Charge Sweeney explained at the time, "with his guilty plea, Edmonds admitted he intended to introduce materially false and misleading information into the commodities markets."

 

A little more than a year later, former Deutsche Bank precious metals trader David Liew sat in a federal courtroom telling a jury about how he learned to 'spoof' markets from his colleagues, and that he considered the behavior to be "OK" because it was "so commonplace." Unfortunately for him, federal authorities didn't see it that way, and have aggressively prosecuted the big dealer banks for market manipulation across a variety of markets. His testimony led to convictions for two of his former coworkers. A few days later, JP Morgan agreed to settle similar allegations with a record $1 billion fine, netting another major victory for the government in the nearly decade-long campaign to root out manipulation from the precious metal markets.

Chicago: Mayor Lightfoot introduces ordinance modifying requirements for industrial uses in manufacturing districts

On September 9, 2020, Mayor Lori Lightfoot introduced an ordinance to the Chicago City Council that modifies the approval requirements for certain industrial uses and public/civic uses near industrial uses.

 

Under the proposed ordinance, warehousing, wholesaling and freight movement uses will require special use approval by the Zoning Board of Appeals on M- and PMD-zoned property. Certain industrial uses will require approval of a planned development if located within 660 feet of an R, B, C, M or POS zoning district. Additionally, general retail sales of goods produced off-site on PMD- and M-zoned property may no longer be accessible to the general public.

 

Zoning map amendments seeking to establish residential, daycare, hospital, parks and recreation, school or outdoor assembly uses within 660 feet of the following types of sites will require a special use approval: windrow composting; intensive manufacturing; waste-related; recycling; warehousing, wholesaling and freight movement or manganese-bearing material operation uses.

 

The ordinance still requires approval by the Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards and the full City Council. If approved, it will have significant implications for the timing for approvals of certain industrial uses that were previously permitted by right.

Man Accused of Flying Minor From California To Florida To Have Sex

 

PANAMA CITY VEACH, FLA. — The Bay County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a Panama City Beach man for bringing a minor from California to Bay County for the purposes of having sex.

 

On September 25, 2020, the BCSO received a request for assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department regarding a juvenile that had been reported to the LAPD as missing. Through their investigation, information was developed that indicated the missing child might be in a condo located on Carrillon Market St. in the Carillon Beach community on Panama City Beach. BCSO deputies and investigators went with the Department of Children and Families to the residence and found the missing juvenile in the company of Luke Oliver Davis, age 20.

 

Subsequent investigation by BCSO investigators led to an interview with the juvenile and a separate interview with Davis. Davis admitted to purchasing an airline ticket for the juvenile to fly from Los Angeles to Panama City Beach a few days prior to September 25th. Davis also admitted to engaging in sexual acts with the juvenile while at his residence in Carillon Beach over the course of several days. Both subjects stated that they initially began communicating with one another through an online site called Discord months earlier.

 

Contact was made with the LAPD and the missing juvenile’s parents were notified the child was located. Arrangements were made for the juvenile to be returned to the parents and returned to Los Angeles.

 

Luke Davis was charged with three counts of Lewd or Lascivious Battery and Interference with Child Custody. He was booked into the Bay County Jail.

FBI Swoops In To Arrest 15-Year-Old Threatening School Shooting

 

WESTON, FLA. — Teamwork between the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the FBI led to the swift arrest over the weekend of a 15-year-old Weston teen accused of posting a video threat to commit a school shooting on a social media app.

 

On Saturday evening, the FBI received a tip through its National Threat Operations Center alerting them to the recently posted video threat. The FBI investigated and immediately informed BSO’s Threat Management Unit and Real Time Crime Center. The two agencies worked together to investigate the information. By early Sunday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the FBI received the tip, the teen was in custody.

 

He was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center for processing and faces one felony count of making written threats to kill, do bodily injury or conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism.

 

The male, a student at aprivate school in Broward County, admitted to making the video and said he intended it as a joke.

Erdogan’s quest for regional hegemony is destabilizing & backing Azerbaijan against Armenia is the latest example

 

Throwing support behind Baku amid the escalation of the Azerbaijan-Armenia dispute, Turkey is playing the classic ‘middle power’ and is aiming to draw Russia and the US into the situation while pursuing its own interests.

 

The latest escalation of a territorial dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia is terrifying and worrying, do we need 2020 to get any worse? Military clashes commenced between the two countries in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, involving helicopters and artillery. Fighting has continued throughout Sunday night, and civilians are reportedly dead. Russia and the United States have both called for a ceasefire and an immediate halt to hostilities.

 

In the midst of all the chaos, however, Azerbaijan has a very clear and open backer – Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Turkey. Ankara has declared its full support for Baku’s side in the dispute, blaming Armenia for the escalation of tensions and stating: “The Turkish people stand with their Azeri brothers with all its means as it has always been.” Turkey has since been accused of sending F-16 fighters to assist Azerbaijan and even of sending militants from Syria.

 

But what’s really going on here? Despite the fact that Ankara brands Armenia as “the biggest threat to the region,” the real problem here is in fact Turkey’s overtly ambitious and nationalistic foreign policy, and its pursuit of establishing regional hegemony, which is becoming a growing destabilizing force to the Middle East and Caucasus proximity. Using its membership only for strategic leverage and gaining the upper hand in conflicts it chooses to escalate, NATO should recognize that Erodgan’s behaviour is increasingly a liability, and its partners should seek to reel him in.

 

Over the past few years, Turkey’s domestic politics and foreign policy have undergone a transformation. The country has shifted away from the democratic ideals and Western-orientated philosophy of Kemalism towards a populist-led Turkish nationalism, which has sought to more aggressively assert Turkey’s interests abroad. Despite being a NATO member, Erodgan has set Ankara’s foreign policy on an independent and adventurist path which has seen the country involve itself in multiple regional conflicts, much to the disdain of everyone else.

 

Turkey has sought to carve out space for itself as a regional hegemon, leveraging its geostrategic position as a land bridge between Europe and Asia, whilst hedging between Washington and Moscow to do so. In the past year alone, Turkey’s provocative actions have included intervention in the Syrian war, growing maritime disputes with Greece, military intervention in Libya and now, escalating the Azerbaijan-Armenia dispute and whipping up pan-Turkish nationalism as the justification.

 

Why has Ankara sought to influence this crisis, at this time? First of all, one recurring theme of nationalist-inspired conflicts in 2020 is the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Turkey’s economy has suffered a devastating toll from the virus, having plummeted at an annualized rate of 9.9 percent and as deep as 11 percent.

Google Implements 30% Cut For All Google Play Store Sales

Google has announced that it will begin enforcing its longstanding policy of forcing app developers who use its Play Store to also use its payment system, which takes a 30% cut from any revenue on any up-front costs or in-app purchases.

 

The update, announced on their blog Monday, has actually been the policy of Google for a long time but is only now being fully implemented. The post announcing the change noted that only 3% of apps use up-front payment or in-app purchases, and of those only 3% don’t currently use Google’s payment service. By that data only 0.09% of apps will be affected by the change, or one in 10,000.

 

That tiny slice, however, contains some big names. Fortnight, the blockbuster video game from Epic Games, was removed from the Google Play Store after it enabled in-app purchases that bypassed Google’s payment system. Apple removed them from their store for the same reason and was sued in response.

 

The move brings the tech giant up to the same standard as Apple. Apply has faced criticism for taking such a heavy cut from its developers, but Google hasn’t faced as much outcry. This is partly because the Google Play Store doesn’t have as large a user base.

 

The criticism is also blunted because Google ships most android phones with at least two separate app stores, giving developers options if they don’t want to use Google’s payment system. It’s through this diverse marketplace that Fortnite is still available on Android phones despite being removed from Google’s storefront.

 

“We believe that developers should have a choice in how they distribute their apps and that stores should compete for the consumer’s and the developer’s business,” the announcement noted, “Choice has always been a core tenet of Android, and it’s why consumers have always had control over which apps they use, be it their keyboard, messaging app, phone dialer, or app store.”

 

Google ended its post by highlighting that the money it collects from in-store payments help fund storefront updates and ongoing support, and asking that developers and users continue to give feedback on their policies.

Anons, have you thought about how close to civil war we really are? I suspect most of the public has no idea. Okay, this changes the story quite a bit. I submit that in person, he was cleary intoxicated according to a friend that knew him. If he indeed threatened his wife with a gun, then that's a problem. Not cool if true and he was not in danger himself.

Nice summary anon. No doubt it has been a long, drawn out affair. I'd like to believe that after 1963 there remained a core group of patriots who identified Poppy, et al, as the assassins, yet waited and patiently grew in number, recruiting new members over time.
