Disney to lay off 28,000 employees as coronavirus slams its theme park business

Prolonged closures at Disney's California-based theme parks and limited attendance at its open parks has forced the company to lay off 28,000 employees across its parks, experiences and consumer products division.

In a letter sent to employees on Tuesday, Josh D'Amaro, head of parks at Disney, detailed several "difficult decisions" the company has had to make in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, including ending its furlough of thousands of employees.

Shares of the company fell less than 2% after the closing bell on Tuesday.

Around 67% of the 28,000 laid off workers were part-time employees, according to D'Amaro. The company declined to break down the layoffs by individual park locations.

While Disney's theme parks in Florida, Paris, Shanghai, Japan and Hong Kong have been able to reopen with limited capacity, both California Adventure and Disneyland have remained shuttered in Anaheim, California.

"As you can imagine, a decision of this magnitude is not easy," D'Amaro wrote in the letter obtained by CNBC. "For the last several months, our management team has worked tirelessly to avoid having to separate anyone from the company. We've cut expenses, suspended capital projects, furloughed our cast members while still paying benefits, and modified our operations to run as efficiently as possible, however, we simply cannot responsibly stay fully staffed while operating at such limited capacity."

The parks, experiences and consumer products segment is a vitally important part of Disney's business. Last year, it accounted for 37% of the company's $69.6 billion in total revenue.

Who Won the Debate

The age old question. I think trying to declare a debate winner is a highly questionable art, particularly in an ideological one. In high-school debate, both speakers argue both sides of an issue.

 

To those watching, I would say it was a horse race

with no clear winner

 

When we go back an analyze after the fact, Trump the clear winner

 

He got Joe to say an unbelievable amount of stupid shit that he is going to have to backpedal on. Trump also clearly broke Joe early on. He was saying "you're a liar" and "will you just shut up."

 

I agree that Trump is known for saying stuff that is atypical of traditional kid glove politics, where "you, Mr. Senator, are no Jack Kennedy," is considered a haymaker, but Biden went straight to inartful name-calling.

 

Trump built a record there that he can easily defend, but he got Biden to build one that will be impossible to defend. He'll have no choice but to ignore, make excuses, and try to change the subject.

 

Which is all he's ever done anyway.

As heartbreaking as it is to take this action, this is the only feasible option we have in light of the prolonged impact of COVID-19 on our business, including limited capacity due to physical distancing requirements and the continued uncertainty regarding the duration of the pandemic.

Thank you for your dedication, patience and understanding during these difficult times. I know that these changes will be challenging. It will take time for all of us to process this information and its impact. We will be scheduling appointments with our affected salaried and non-union hourly employees over the next few days. Additionally, today we will begin the process of discussing next steps with unions. We encourage you to visit The Hub or the WDI Homepage for any support you may need.

I would add that Trump has to avoid a Kent State. If he sends in the National Guard without a state Governor's approval and rioters and rioters are shot and killed it will be an MSM shark fest until election day.

 

If a governor calls in the guard and rioters are killed, they have partial blame as well, so Blue state governors and mayors are pushing the envelope as far as possible to goad Trump into a reaction without their approval. That's the reason for the swinging door policy when rioters are arrested, for example.

 

You have to speculate that if the Guard is called in, DS will have snipers tasked with shooting rioters, as was rumored to have happened in the Ukraine Maiden (I think) protests.

 

Trump has to play his cards close to his chest and reveal coordinated actions between Blue state pols and Antifa when the case is at an open and shut stage. Rumors now indicate good guys have cloned phones, for example. That could be the sign we're at the right stage.

ROME — Speaking to an audience that included top Vatican diplomat Cardinal Pietro Parolin Sept. 30, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made several thinly veiled critiques of Pope Francis' strategy of engagement with the Chinese government and appeared even to contrast the current pontiff with one of his predecessors.

 

Pompeo's ten-minute remarks, given at an event in Rome hosted by the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, came as Parolin and the Vatican are known to be working to renew a landmark agreement with Beijing over the appointment of Catholic bishops in the Communist country.

 

Although the U.S. cabinet official did not mention the Vatican-China deal by name, he lambasted the Chinese government at several points, declaring: "Nowhere is religious freedom under assault more than in China."

 

Pompeo also highlighted the role Pope John Paul II had played in the 1980s in helping accelerate the fall of Communist regimes in Europe, and ended his speech by noting that John Paul had canonized 87 Chinese martyrs in 2000.

The secretary's comments, given at an event focused on issues of international religious liberty, appeared to represent a ratcheting up of public pressure from the U.S. government against papal policy.

 

Pompeo previously criticized the Vatican-China deal in an unusually direct Sept. 19 article in the right-wing magazine First Things, and later alleged in a tweet that the Vatican "endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal."

 

Parolin also addressed the Sept. 30 event, but spoke more widely about the Catholic Church's understanding of religious freedom and did not mention China by name. Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Parolin's deputy, also spoke. He too did not mention China.

 

Gallagher told journalists that he did not mention the Communist country or its human rights record, because "we don't name and blame; it's one of the principles of Vatican diplomacy normally."

 

Asked how Vatican officials had received Pompeo's Sept. 19 article, Gallagher responded: "It was received critically."

 

Francis' deal with China, first made on provisional, two-year basis in 2018, ended a seven-decade dispute over the appointment of Catholic bishops in the world's most populous country.

 

Although the details of the agreement have not been made public, it is widely known that it involves the proposing of names for new bishops to the Vatican by the Chinese government with the help of a state-run group called the "Patriotic Catholic Association."

 

The pope then makes the final decision on whom to appoint as bishop, effectively giving him veto power on the matter.

I think that POTUS went all in yesterday to let Sleepy Joe know that this is a battle of epic proportion. Moneyval evaluation begins at Vatican

Vatican City, Sep 30, 2020 / 05:00 am MT (CNA).- The Council of Europe’s anti-money laundering watchdog, Moneyval, began its two-week on-site inspection of the Holy See and Vatican City Wednesday.

 

According to a Vatican statement Sept. 30, “the scope of this phase of evaluations” is to assess “the effectiveness of the legislative and institutional measures” adopted by the Holy See and Vatican City in recent years.

 

This evaluation follows Moneyval’s first on-site visit to the Vatican in 2012, as well as three progress reports, the last of which was in December 2017, the statement said.

 

Moneyval carries out the same evaluations on all its member jurisdictions.

 

Carmelo Barbagallo, president of the Vatican’s Financial Information Authority, described the inspection as “especially important.” “Its outcome may determine how the jurisdiction [of the Vatican] is perceived by the financial community,” he said on July 3.

 

After the 2012 visit, the Vatican agreed to comply with a set of “recommendations” from Moneyval, incorporating them into internal policies. The two bodies have issued periodic updates on the Vatican’s progress.

 

The 2020 evaluation will likely be looking to see how well these recommendations have been incorporated by Vatican offices, and at the role of APSA, which functions as the Holy See treasury, sovereign wealth manager, and administers payroll and operating expenses for Vatican City.

(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 30 - A top Vatican official on Wednesday accused US President Donald Trump's administration of using Pope Francis with an event staged during US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Rome.

Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican's Secretary for Relations with States, answered in the affirmative when asked by ANSA if the US unilaterally organizing a symposium on religious freedom at its embassy to the Holy See amounted to exploitation of the pope in the final stages of the US presidential campaign.

"Yes, that is precisely why the pope will not meet American Secretary of State Mike Pompeo," Gallagher said.

During his visit, Pompeo is set to have talks with Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, but not Pope Francis.

Vatican sources had said it was felt a meeting with such a senior figure in Trump's administration would be inappropriate so close to the elections.

Pompeo and Parolin are expected to discuss the Vatican's relations with China, after the former accused the Holy See of being too soft on Beijing and was critical of the likelihood that a historic agreement with the Chinese authorities on the nomination of bishops will be renewed.

Pompeo called on "every faith leader to find the courage to confront religious persecution against their own communities, and those of other faiths" during a speech in Rome on Wednesday.

A QANON supporter has been arrested by cops over claims he tortured and murdered his girlfriend's baby daughter, say reports.

 

Joshua Paul Jennings is accused of killing 10-month-old Paisley Cearley while she was in his care at an apartment, say Oklahoma City cops.

 

According to records from the Canadian County Sheriff's Office, he is facing first degree murder, torture and maiming charges.

 

The Daily Beast reported that Jennings, 33, last month posted the QAnon-linked slogan #SaveOurChildren on his Facebook page.

 

The slogan was originally part of the Save the Children charity, but has been hijacked by those who believe in the bizarre conspiracy theory.

 

QAnon is a twisted ideology which believes in a “deep state” and a widespread child sex trafficking ring run by satanic pedophiles and cannibals.

 

He wrote: “Y’all know I don’t get on here much and post any more. One, because life has been crazy with work, moving, etc.

 

"And two, because I don’t feel the need to live my life through social media.

 

"However…This #SaveOurChildren movement train I will GLADLY hop on. Blow it up on my page if you feel froggy.”

 

Oklahoma City Police said they responded to Mercy Minor Emergency Clinic on Friday afternoon where they were informed a baby had been brought in with critical injuries.

 

“She was transported to an area hospital from the minor emergency clinic,” said Master Sgt. Gary Knight with Oklahoma City Police.

 

"Sadly, the following morning, she passed away as a result of her injuries.”

DOD Takes Steps to Safeguard Supply Chain

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the domestic and foreign supply chains has led the Defense Department to focus more intensely on identifying critical infrastructure and vulnerabilities and to take measures to protect those assets, said the executive director for international cooperation, Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment.

 

Gregory Kausner spoke today at the ComDef 2020 forum, a virtual conference providing insights and perspectives on issues facing the international defense communities.

 

Since Kausner's area of focus is international suppliers, he mentioned some steps his office is taking.

 

After identifying weaknesses in the foreign supply chain, the department has been in diplomatic consultation at the highest levels of government to ensure allies and partners understand the impacts of foreign supply chain disruption to the U.S. warfighter, he said.

 

Besides working with allies and partners, Kausner said the department has identified weaknesses in the foreign supply chain and has looked for ways to shift work to less vulnerable foreign suppliers and in some instances to re-shore, meaning to bring the manufacture of critical parts and technologies to the U.S.

 

Kausner listed areas of critical components and technologies that the department is focused on protecting: microelectronics; rare earth metals; hypersonics; fully networked command, control and communications; directed energy; cyber; space; quantum science; artificial intelligence; machine learning; autonomy; biotechnology; and, a 5G network.

Op-Ed: Facebook drove QAnon’s mad growth and enhanced

its power to poison elections

Five weeks out from the November election, virulent disinformation from domestic and foreign sources continues to fill internet platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Google. The most extreme voices are being amplified and conspiracy theories and lies are outcompeting expertise and facts on the most critical issues this nation faces — from the legitimacy of the election to public health measures against the coronavirus.

 

The damage has been continuous since 2016 and there’s little likelihood that these platforms will stop the subversion of truth at this point.

 

Postmortems of the election months or years from now may tell us with real accuracy how these platforms affected American democracy. For now, the benefit of examining how this dynamic works could help inoculate voters to limit the harm from this disinformation.

 

Of all the many sources of falsehoods and conspiracies, the latest wave comes from QAnon, which journalists have described as a cult and a collective delusion, wholly detached from reality. QAnon claims there is a deep state conspiracy of Satan-worshipping Democrats and celebrities, operating a pedophilia ring against which Donald Trump is the only hope. A mysterious character, Q, issues clues that are decoded and shared by followers.

 

Beginning in 2017 on the fringe platform 4Chan, QAnon has grown to global scale — made possible by social media platforms. The game designer Adrian Hon said in an interview with the New York Times that QAnon applies the principles of alternate reality video games — specifically the use of the real world as a platform for storytelling — to grow its conspiracy theory.

 

QAnon treats every event, no matter how far off script, as part of the design. This has allowed QAnon to absorb every conspiracy it encounters and launch many new ones. The recent subversion of the hashtag #SaveTheChildren has enabled QAnon to put a softer face on its movement, attracting millions of women to a far-right network once largely filled with disaffected men.

 

As QAnon has grown in scale, it has become an animating force of right-wing politics around the world. A poll by Daily Kos/Civiqs revealed that 33% of Republicans believe that QAnon is “mostly true,” while an additional 23% believe “some parts” of the theory are true. Media Matters identified 70 candidates for Congress this year who expressed some level of support for QAnon. At least one of these candidates is favored to win.

 

Most extreme conspiracies that begin on fringe sites never get any further. The success of QAnon required far more than the embrace of gaming architectures. Internet platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Google, YouTube and Twitter have provided the algorithmic amplification to drive QAnon from the fringes into the mainstream.

 

This was not an accident. QAnon is huge and dangerous because these platforms empowered it for their own profits and power.

 

These have become the most powerful businesses in our economy by converting human attention into revenue. Among the many problematic aspects of their business model is the algorithmic amplification of emotionally engaging content to maintain attention and the use of recommendation engines to steer behavior.

 

When Trump posts a message on Twitter and Facebook that implies support for QAnon, algorithms give it maximum reach because it grabs and holds attention. Trump’s tweets appear relatively benign to nonbelievers, but to QAnon, they are validation. Their existence on Twitter and Facebook allows them to recruit, indoctrinate and influence their audiences.

 

When Facebook’s systems analyze the immense amounts of personal data the company collects, they identify people who might be curious about conspiracy theories and recommend Facebook Groups to join. Facebook did a study in 2018 that revealed that 64% of the time when a person joins an extremist Facebook Group, they do so because of a Facebook recommendation.

How Memes Ruined the World

For years, white-supremacist rhetoric hid in plain sight among cat GIFs and Hitler jokes. Why didn’t we see the danger?

Remember when the internet used to be fun? Whitney Phillips does. The digital anthropologist was recently looking through a huge set of images from the late 2000s that had been posted to Reddit. The first comment described the era as “a more simple time,” and sure enough, the pictures were weird, silly, and creative. Talking cows. Cats playing video games. A bear on a golf course. A guy Photoshopped to have mouths for eyes.

 

Then she noticed something else. Something disturbing. The thread began, she wrote recently, “with a lighthearted meme about Hitler.” After that was “dehumanizing mockery of a child with disabilities. And more sneering mockery of an old man hooked up to an oxygen tank. And date rape. And violence against animals. And fat shaming. And homophobia. And racism. And pedophilia. And how hilarious 9/11 was.”

 

If you’ve spent any time online, you will have imbibed both the aesthetic and, perhaps, the ethics of “meme culture” or “internet culture.” This is the mashed-up jumble of images, jargon, and folk art that gushed out of sites such as 4chan, Reddit, and Tumblr from the late 2000s. The look was lo-fi and absurdist, and the tone was eye-rolling, cynical, self-aware. Blocky white letter captions on pictures of exaggerated facial expressions. “HALP,” “OHRLY,” “KTHXBYE.” Adorable cat GIFs.

 

In the 2000s and early 2010s, Phillips was one of a group of academics, activists, and intellectuals who studied memes, and promoted the idea of the web as a space of unfettered, anarchic creation. The revolution would be user-generated. (The founders of social networks—primarily young, carefree, middle-class white Americans—agreed.) Okay, the argument went, this outpouring of creativity had its darker elements, but that was part of its countercultural charm. The casual sadism of trolling was just “lulz,” which shouldn’t be taken seriously. Sexism, racism, and other hatreds were being invoked for nothing more than shock value. It was ironic, duh.

 

In 2009, she attended a live show called Meme Factory, which aimed to explain this new language of the internet. Three young men sat in front of microphones, talking deliberately fast, occasionally projecting pictures onto the screen behind them. There were “fails”; there were “owns”; the viewers didn’t have to think much about the people who were the butt of the joke. The first Meme Factory show began with a disclaimer about its offensive content, delivered in front of a picture of a white cat captioned with what was a popular phrase at the time: Internet. Serious Business. Phillips remembers laughing until she cried at a repeat performance the next year. There was an assumption that everyone in the room “got it,” that they understood who was being satirized—the racists and the homophobes—and that everything was just for lulz.

 

But the blizzard of memes didn’t allow any time to distinguish between the cute and the offensive, the innocuous and the hateful. One section, Phillips recalled, showed “several internet-infamous young white women who had inspired widespread mockery online.” Such women, the three men explained, were referred to as “camwhores.” When the photograph of one flashed on-screen, the crowd booed. A man in the audience shouted: “Kill her!”

 

Phillips, an assistant communications professor at Syracuse University, now thinks she got it wrong. All that ironic racism doesn’t feel so ironic anymore. “I don’t even know exactly when it totally shifted,” she told me, from her yellow-painted living room in Syracuse, New York, her hands anxiously fluttering around her face as we spoke over Zoom. “What seemed to be fun and funny ended up functioning as a Trojan horse for white-supremacist, violent ideologies to shuffle through the gates and not be recognized.”

I have a proposal

 

The media is definitely posting posts heavily regarding White Supremacists from the Debate. This is the clear 4AM talking point.

 

I have a solution but first let me explain my reasoning for the solution I'll be mentioning in a second. There have been many recent revelations that groups like Antifa are mostly White people, and same for Black Lives Matter groups being run by white people. Admittance came from black people on Baked Alaska video yesterday prior to the debate when a Black man on the street stated BLM is run by White People.

 

The Black community even knows this!

 

If Trump wants to further secure the Black Voter, when he's asked by the Press or by the Debates again, the solution is he should declare Antifa and Black Lives Matter groups as the White Supremacists groups, and denounce them. He's not going to win the members of those groups vote anyway, but by pointing it out, he will better secure the Black Vote, and those White people at home watching will also agree, come to this realization (Which many have not yet) and will also secure the White Vote in one volley.

 

We all know these groups are run by those Jews who do not have our best interest at heart but they claim they are white, so it also will shine a light on this aspect as well publicly.

 

This needs to happen. I think Trump should say this publicly. What say you?
