YouTube pulls Myanmar military channels as UN prepares to meet on crisis

YouTube has removed five channels run by Myanmar's military for violating its guidelines.

The video service announced the move on Friday, as demonstrators defied growing violence by security forces and staged more anti-coup protests ahead of a special UN Security Council meeting on the country's political crisis.

YouTube said it was watching for any further content that might violate its rules.

It earlier pulled dozens of channels as part of an investigation into content uploaded in a coordinated influence campaign.

The decision by YouTube followed Facebook's earlier announcement that it had removed all Myanmar military-linked pages from its site and Instagram, which it also owns.

The escalation of violence by security forces has put pressure on the world community to act to restrain the junta, which seized power on February 1 by ousting the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Large protests against military rule have occurred daily in many cities and towns.

Washington Supreme Court opens door to forcing religious organizations to hire LGBT individuals

The Washington state Supreme Court reversed a lower court's decision this week regarding legal exemptions for religious employers, in a move that could open the door to forcing religious organizations to hire LGBT employees.

In the original ruling passed down more than two years ago, King County Superior Court Judge Karen Donohue dismissed a bisexual attorney's complaint against Seattle's Union Gospel Mission after the attorney, Matt Woods, sued the mission for discrimination when it refused to hire him upon learning of his sexuality.

The mission, Donohue ruled at the time, was acting within its rights because as a religious nonprofit it was exempt from the state's anti-discrimination law regarding one's sexual orientation. But now the state Supreme Court has reversed that ruling and ordered that the case return to the lower court, the Seattle Times reported.

Seattle Times reporter Sydney Brownstone was careful to note that while the court's ruling doesn't altogether strike down the religious employer exemption it "questions whether that exemption applies to a staff attorney at a legal aid clinic." The decision, she noted, "could potentially open the door to more LGBTQ staffers working in social services at religious nonprofits."

And because many of the state's social service programs are run by religious organizations, the ruling could have serious ripple effects far beyond just homeless shelters.

In response to the new development, Woods said he was relieved.

"To get the affirmation from the court that religious organizations don't have a right to blanket discriminate against LGBTQ people for who they are no matter what the job is a big relief," he said. "Especially for members of my community that are so much more likely to experience discrimination in the workplace because of their race or gender identity."

The mission, one of Seattle's largest homeless shelter and service organizations, declined to comment when contacted by the Times.

The Times report adds that "local religious organizations have been undergoing a reckoning in recent years, as same-sex marriage has gained acceptance from the general public."

Though not directly related to the case in Washington state, the ruling certainly represents the kind of legal challenges that could arise for religious organizations should the Equality Act pass both chambers of Congress and be signed into law.

The legislation, which passed in the House last month, may soon threaten punishment against individuals and organizations who still hold to traditional beliefs about marriage, gender identity, and sexual orientation.

Pentagon Assessing Its Networks for Possible Damage After Microsoft Breach, Spokesman Says

Earlier this week, Microsoft accused a Chinese hacking group known as "Hafnium" of breaching its Exchange Server email application. Microsoft had previously accused the company of attempting to steal information from infectious disease researchers, defense contractors, policy think tanks and non-governmental organizations.

Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby on Friday revealed the US Department of Defense was assessing its networks for possible damage after the Microsoft breach.

“We are aware of the Microsoft threat intelligence center’s report. We are currently assessing our networks right now for any evidence of impact,” Kirby said.

“We are also … taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to the situation," he added.

The latest statement by the Pentagon comes after White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the Biden administration is monitoring the Microsoft breach, which had a "large number of victims," the Hill reported.

“This is a significant vulnerability that could have far-reaching impacts. First and foremost, this is an active threat,” Psaki told reporters during the press briefing. However, she did not provide any information on whether any federal agencies were compromised by the hack. She did urge network operators who had been comprised to swiftly "take appropriate steps."

“Everyone running these servers — government, private sector, academia — needs to act now to patch them. We are concerned there are a large number of victims and we are working with our partners to understand the scope of this. So it’s an ongoing process," Psaki said, the Hill reported.

In a Thursday blog post, cybersecurity group FireEye said that the hackers had targeted “US-based retailers, local governments, a university, and an engineering firm" as well as a Southeast Asian government and a Central Asian telecom group.

The Czech Republic’s National Office for Cyber and Information Security also released a statement Friday stating it would assisting organizations impacted by the hack, suggesting that the hack has had international ramifications.

This week, the Department of Homeland Security also issued an emergency warning to any government agencies using the Exchange email software.

Since the breach, Microsoft has updated its software.

“Even though we’ve worked quickly to deploy an update for the Hafnium exploits, we know that many nation-state actors and criminal groups will move quickly to take advantage of any unpatched systems,” Tom Burt, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of customer trust and security, wrote in a blog post.

The US Arrests Mileta Miljanić, the Alleged Leader of ‘Group America’

U.S. authorities arrested the alleged leader of a criminal clan known as Group America, believed to have smuggled tons of cocaine across the world. The gang is known for dismembering enemies with chainsaws, assassinating senior government officials and cooperating with intelligence agencies.

The FBI arrested Mileta Miljanić in his home in New York during the search of his apartment on February 23, when officers found a gun in the drawer of his nightstand, according to documents obtained by OCCRP and its Serbian partner KRIK on Friday. Miljanić has a criminal history.

It is believed that the operation was part of a wider investigation.

Miljanić’s name appeared in the case of James Cahill, a labor leader who was arrested in October on bribery charges. Cahill had connections in the underworld, including with the famous Gambino Family, the Westies, an Irish gang that once operated in Manhattan, and Miljanić’s Group America.

Only two days after Miljanić’s arrest, a court in Lima sentenced his right-hand-man Zoran Jakšić, a Serbian national and leading member of Group America, to 25 years in prison for the second time.

Peruvian authorities originally sentenced Jakšić after he was apprehended by National Police in 2016 while attempting to smuggle 800 kilograms of cocaine out of the country. Media reports say that his initial conviction was overruled by an appeals court and he was granted a retrial.

Miljanić has also been known as one of the most powerful members of Balkan criminal networks, while his Group America is believed to have smuggled tons of cocaine across the world and trading on ties with intelligence agencies.

OCCRP, KRIK and Czech news outlet Investigace followed the decades-old criminal organization with roots in New York and the Balkans for years. The gang operates in dozens of countries and is believed to have been supplying Europe with tons of cocaine from South America.

Group America and Miljanić were also believed to have been maintaining ties with Serbian intelligence and political circles.

Miljanić appeared in a 2016 group photo with Ivica Dačić, current speaker of the Serbian National Assembly, who visited New York as Serbia’s then Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

Dačić denied knowing the suspected crime boss standing behind him in the photo and explained later that Miljanić was introduced to him as a major donor of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the U.S.

What's Happening With Extremist Groups?

U.S. Capitol Police are ramping up security at the complex on Thursday over concerns about a possible plot by a militia group to breach the building.

The threat is connected to a baseless conspiracy theory that former President Donald Trump will rise to power again on March 4, which used to be Inauguration Day. After the Jan. 6 riot and President Biden’s inauguration, QAnon supporters searching for another date to prophesize found March 4, NBC’s Ben Collins says.

Tax-evading members of the sovereign citizens movement believe a decades-old conspiracy theory that the U.S. government has been illegitimate since Ulysses S. Grant left office in 1877, he says. Grant was inaugurated on March 4 in 1869.

“QAnon supporters, they’re not all the way in on this. They don’t really fully believe all this stuff,” he says, “but they’re desperate for some sort of answer that isn’t ‘Joe Biden is the president and reality is reality.’ ”

The buzz around this date has died down upon supporters realizing there aren’t any large events scheduled — unlike when Trump held a rally on Jan. 6, he says.

With yet another significant date passing by without Trump regaining power, Collins recalls the 1956 book “When Prophecy Fails” about a cult called the Seekers. The cult believed in a doomsday, and when the world didn’t end on that day, members pivoted to believing they prevented the apocalypse, Collins says.

Like members of the Seekers, QAnon and militia movements are becoming “more hardened in their beliefs as time goes on,” Collins says.

Earlier this week, FBI Director Christopher Wray told the Senate Judiciary Committee that the Capital riot was the culmination of a domestic terror threat that’s been growing for years.

“Jan. 6 was not an isolated event,” Wray said. “The problem of domestic terrorism has been metastasizing across the country for a long time now, and it’s not going away anytime soon.”

Wray also confirmed that after Black Lives Matter demonstrations over the summer, the FBI increased its focus on anti-government extremists like antifa, but still listed that below the threat posed by white supremacists.

The FBI getting distracted by political pressure from the Trump administration could help explain how white supremacists gained power seemingly in the shadows, Collins says.

Trump didn’t condemn white supremacists for starting violence at Black Lives Matter rallies last summer, Collins says, and told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by.”

“He could have told these people to go away and cut it out, but he did not do that,” Collins says. “These people were strategically aligned with the previous White House. And that’s really what these investigations are looking into.”

The Washington Post and other outlets are reporting that some of these far-right groups involved in the Capitol Riot, including the Proud Boys, are starting to splinter. These divisions raise the concern of lone extremists who can be more difficult to track.

Deplatforming extremists on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook is a “double-edged sword,” Collins says.

“They’re not going to be able to get their message out in the same way,” he says. “However, when those people go into these smaller spaces, these spaces that are not tracked as easily, it’s harder to find out what they’re actually planning.”

Many extremists are committing illegal and hateful acts, but at the same time, some people have been taken advantage of and lied to by people in power.

QAnon serves as an example of why reconciling these differences is a challenge for law enforcement, he says. The QAnon conspiracy theory is based on the premise that public figures will be rounded up and killed as onlookers cheer. But American churches and grandparents with no intention of committing crimes are believing in this “violent ideology,” he says.

China forcing anal swab COVID tests on many foreign travelers

China has made its headline-grabbing anal swab test mandatory for many foreign travelers arriving in several major cities in the country, according to Chinese state media on Tuesday.

Israel is updating attack plans against Iran's nuclear sites - Gantz

House passes bill allowing DOJ to force deletion of social media posts from select users

The House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, the “For The People Act,” on Wednesday, a bill that would allow the Department of Justice to require social media platforms to remove posts from certain users.

Originally introduced as The Foreign Agent Disclaimer Enhancement (FADE) Act, FADE was included in H.R. 1 as an amendment by a vote of 223-208 Wednesday night. Biden Extends National Emergency, Sanctions With Respect to Iran
