Sniffing out those products at local markets isn’t nearly as simple.

The sale of Pittsburgh-based H.J. Heinz Co. to billionaire Warren Buffet for $23.3 billion in February represented the largest deal ever in the food industry, but further magnifies the perplexing lack of pickles available to local residents who smell baby dills and sweet gherkins being made here but have a hard time finding them.

You can’t get them at Meijer or Family Fare supermarkets.

You’ll instead see them occupying shelf space at odd spots such as Shopko Hometown in Allegan and — believe it or not — Menards home-improvement stores.

“I’m not a pickle person,” said Brad Swineheart, assistant general manager at Menards of Holland, 572 E. 16th St., “but I didn’t know (Heinz pickles) were such a hard commodity to come by. People are surprised by some of the stuff we sell in here.”

The Sentinel staff scoured the Holland area following inquiries from local residents wondering why pickles produced right in their backyard seem to be so scarce.

The factory in Holland, which opened in 1897, is Heinz’s only pickle-processing plant and accounts for 15 percent of its annual sales, which reached $17.6 billion last year.

Menards stocks five different varieties of Heinz pickle products.

It has kosher dill spears, bread and butter slices, sweet relish and hamburger dill chips, but the Holland location was completely sold out of sweet gherkins recently.

Meijer and Family Fare sell numerous brands of pickles. No jars of Heinz pickles on its shelves, although its omnipresent bottles of ketchup take up lots of shelf space.

Shopko Hometown, 540 Jenner Drive, of Allegan proudly stocks Heinz pickles.

“We sell kosher dill spears, hot dog relish and regular relish,” sales floor supervisor Rebecca Moore said. “Our food section isn’t all that big, but we’ve carried them since our grand opening in October. I like ’em. I try to buy local as much as I can.

“But sometimes that’s hard to do.”

A bigger challenge is getting an informed response from Heinz.

The Sentinel requested a list of local retailers offering its pickles, but a spokesperson from corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh had no idea Menards sold them.

The same company official poured vinegar on the Sentinel’s request to interview new Holland plant manager Jon Pepoy to get to the bottom of the great pickle caper.

Assorted pickles, relishes and sauces are made at the Holland plant, which employs about 300 people full time and 200-300 laborers during the cucumber season.

The prosecutor will then say, this is true but in this case we have witnesses that will testify that the film s a true and accurate account of what occurred.

A witness will come in, testify and describe the scene just as the jury already saw on the film. Then the defense will attack and say that the witness now has false memory from having seen the film. But the prosecutor will object and ask the witness if they saw any recording of the events that they described. The witness will say NO.

And the prosecution will win those cases.

Later on there will be fewer disputes about the video evidence because a prosecutor can argue whether or not it was doctored by comparing with films known to be true.

Every day, the president gets what's called a Daily Brief from the CIA. The brief is a short summary of all the most important things going on in the world, including the top secret stuff the CIA is involved in.

The Daily Brief is a tradition that goes back to John F. Kennedy. The briefs given to Kennedy — and to Lyndon B. Johnson — were recently declassified and published on Wednesday.

They're full of fascinating stuff, including details of the Cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam War, and countless lesser events.

For example, on October 30, 1962 — at the height of the missile crisis — the agency reported that the latest aerial surveillance photos, taken the day before, were inconclusive. They could not confirm the Russian claim to have started withdrawing their missiles. In other words, we’re looking at the latest, real-time intelligence hitting the president’s desk at the time.

Kennedy ordered the CIA to start the brief in the aftermath of the Bay of Pigs crisis, in which Kennedy felt he was not getting a coordinated, consistent briefing. The Agency’s Office of Current Intelligence leapt at the chance to distill their best information into what was initially known as the President’s Intelligence Checklist, or PICL. The office became known as the pickle factory.

The brief consisted of two or three sentences on all the top issues of the day. Kennedy wanted it short enough that he could fold it up, and put it in his top pocket.

The first brief was delivered on June 17, 1961, while the president was at his Blue Ridge mountain retreat. Kennedy was by the pool and sat on the diving board to read the first PICL. Abstract

In recent years, scholars of international history and intelligence have argued that, since the 1990s, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been engaged in public-relations campaigns to promote its image. As evidence of this, they point to the CIA's willingness to provide more briefings to the media, its greater engagement with Hollywood, and the appearance of CIA staff historians at academic conferences. Drawing on recently declassified documents and unpublished correspondence from the private papers of CIA officers, this article will argue that efforts by the CIA in the realm of opinion-forming began much earlier than the existing historiography dictates. In the 1970s, embarrassing revelations about CIA domestic operations prompted a host of loyal veterans, most notably David Atlee Phillips, to speak out in favour of the intelligence community as an indispensible, effective, and honourable arm of government. They did this by speaking at universities and by writing memoirs. The Hong Kong-born Lee, suspected of being at the centre of one of the largest US intelligence breaches in decades, is expected to plead not guilty

The Hong Kong-born Lee, who was a CIA officer between 1994 and 2007, is also alleged to have deposited hundreds of thousands of dollars more in illicit payments from his Chinese handlers into his personal HSBC accounts in Hong Kong.

Lee was arrested by FBI agents in January after his flight from Hong Kong landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in a federal court in Virginia on Friday, where he is expected to plead not guilty to one count of conspiracy to gather or deliver national defence information to aid a foreign government, as well as two counts of unlawful retention of national defence information.

Federal prosecutors initially accused him of having illegally kept notebooks containing sensitive information about CIA operations. But last week he was accused of a far more serious crime – conspiring to commit espionage.

Lee, 53, was indicted on May 8 by a federal grand jury in Virginia, and is due to be arraigned at 9am on Friday in Alexandria before US District Judge TS Ellis III.

Lee, also known as Zhen Cheng Li, has been described by many as a mole at the centre of one of the most serious US intelligence breaches in decades, after 18 to 20 informants in China were killed or imprisoned. The New York Times reported last year that the first signs of trouble that led to the dismantling of the US spy network in China surfaced in 2010. The FBI and the CIA then opened a joint investigation.

According to the indictment – which did not touch on the consequences of Lee’s alleged espionage – he met two intelligence officers from China’s Ministry of State Security in Shenzhen, a city bordering Hong Kong, in April 2010, and they gave him “a gift of $100,000 cash in exchange for his cooperation”, with the promise that “they would take care of him for life”.

Those officers, according to the indictment, requested at least 21 pieces of information, most asking Lee to reveal sensitive information about the CIA, including about national defence.

The indictment noted that the Chinese intelligence and security agency, and its bureaus, were tasked with conducting clandestine human source operations, of which the US was a principal target.

Court documents said that in May 2010, Lee made a cash deposit of HK$138,000 (US$17,468) into one of his personal HSBC accounts in Hong Kong.

“This would be the first of hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash deposits Lee made” until December 2013, the documents read.

Prosecutors mentioned as further evidence a document created on Lee’s laptop that included information on places where the CIA would assign officers, and the location of a sensitive operation.

“It was later determined that the information Lee included in this document was national defence information of the US that was classified at the secret level,” court papers read.

The indictment also said that in response to a request from Chinese intelligence officers, Lee drew a sketch of the floor plan of a particular CIA facility abroad.

According to court documents, the Chinese requests continued into at least 2011.

Lee is also accused of having made several false statements to US authorities.
