Prince Andrew settles civil sexual assault claim with Virginia Giuffre

The Duke of York has reached an out-of-court financial settlement with his accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

 

The deal brings an end to the legal process and means he will not face a jury trial in the civil case on sexual abuse claims.

 

The terms of the deal will remain secret, but in a joint statement the Duke expressed regret about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and confirmed that he will make a "substantial donation" to Ms Giuffre’s charity in support of victims’ rights.

 

Ms Giuffre alleged that she was sexually abused or raped by Prince Andrew on three separate occasions in 2001 when she was 17. She had sued him for unspecified damages.

 

In a joint statement, the two sides said: "Virginia Giuffre and Prince Andrew have reached an out-of-court settlement."

 

It said they would file a request to dismiss the case when the undisclosed sum had been received.

 

"Prince Andrew has never intended to malign Ms Giuffre’s character, and he accepts that she has suffered both as an established victim of abuse and as a result of unfair public attacks," it said.

 

"It is known that Jeffrey Epstein trafficked countless young girls over many years. Prince Andrew regrets his association with Epstein, and commends the bravery of Ms Giuffre and other survivors in standing up for themselves and others.

 

"He pledges to demonstrate his regret for his association with Epstein by supporting the fight against the evils of sex trafficking, and by supporting its victims."

 

In a joint court filing, the parties told the New York judge overseeing the case that they anticipated that it would be brought to a close within 30 days and asked that all action be suspended in the meantime.

 

The Duke had been due to give a deposition under oath on March 10.

 

Sigrid McCawley, representing Ms Giuffre, told The Telegraph: "As a managing partner at a firm that has from its beginning acted upon the belief that the law should be marshalled to bring justice to the most vulnerable, I can say, without hesitation, that our representation of survivors upholds that tradition.

 

"I am very pleased with the resolution of Virginia Giuffre’s litigation against Prince Andrew."

 

Lisa Bloom, an attorney representing eight victims of Jeffrey Epstein, said: "We hail Virginia’s victory today. She has accomplished what no one else could: getting Prince Andrew to stop his nonsense and side with sexual abuse victims.

 

"We salute Virginia’s stunning courage."

 

Penny Junor, the Royal author, said the settlement is likely to come as a "huge relief" to the rest of the Royal family.

 

"Going to trial, it could have been very, very nasty," she said. "It could have been embarrassing, humiliating, and it would have been huge fodder for the tabloid press.

 

"It could have really taken the shine off the Queen's Platinum Jubilee year."

 

Another royal expert said the Duke would "forever be tainted" by the civil sex assault claim brought against him.

 

Joe Little, of Majesty magazine, told the PA news agency: "I just don't think he's ever likely to resume work as a working member of the royal family.

 

"I think that too much water has gone under the bridge for that and the institution of monarchy has been tainted by his association with Epstein and I just think that there's no going back on all that."

 

On the likely reaction of the rest of the royal family, he said: "I'm sure that they're glad this (settlement agreement) has happened but does it exonerate the prince who really has not been charged with anything criminal?

 

"He will, I think, forever be tainted by this scandal, for want of a better way of describing it."

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Has Significant Lead Over All Democrat Challengers

When it comes to polling, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is in very good shape.

He is currently beating all of his Democrat challengers by a comfortable margin.

The media has tried so hard to take him down but none of it has worked.

Four years after winning election by the narrowest of margins, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) leads his three most likely Democratic challengers in advance of November’s midterm elections, a new poll finds.

The survey, conducted by the nonpartisan firm Mason-Dixon Polling and Research, found DeSantis claiming more than half the vote in match-ups against Rep. Charlie Crist (D), state Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried (D) and state Sen. Annette Taddeo (D).

DeSantis leads Crist, making his bid to return to Tallahassee a dozen years after his sole term as governor ended, by a 51 percent to 43 percent margin. DeSantis leads Fried by a 53 percent to 42 percent margin. And he leads Taddeo, who represents a Miami-area district, 53 percent to 37 percent.

DeSantis leads by much wider margins among independents; against Crist, he leads 56 percent to 33 percent among those voters.

Fifty-three percent of voters say they approve of the job DeSantis has done in office, the same rating voters gave him a year ago. Forty-three percent said they disapprove of his job performance.

 

At this rate, DeSantis will cruise to reelection.

OPINION: Finally, more than a week into an ugly occupation of Parliament, Police Commissioner Andrew Coster has realised he needs to step in and step up.

 

For eight days protesters have hurled abuse at anyone wearing a mask, written death threats on Parliament's forecourt, clogged up the streets of central Wellington. And save the brief arrest-fest last Thursday it appears, to an increasingly frustrated Wellington public, that police can't or won't do a lot about it.

 

This is not a criticism of the frontline officers who are day-in-day-out patrolling Parliament ensuring safety. They are doing a great job, facing hours of being yelled at, spat at and even assaulted. They've weathered everything from horrid humidity to an ex-tropical cyclone.

 

But it was only on Tuesday that the top brass recognised the depth of public frustration, activating the major operations centre - taking over the protest, managing it at a national policing level.

That means finally rolling out the big boss to say the protest is "no longer tenable".

 

Cmmr Coster laid down an ultimatum: "The roads need to be cleared now or we will be towing vehicles. Vehicles that are towed will be seized and not immediately released to those who have failed to move them. Those who obstruct police efforts to clear the roads can expect to be arrested and charged," he said.

 

The problem is at this stage his ultimatum is a bit of a joke.

 

The Commissioner said with a straight face he will tow the vehicles, confiscate them and arrest anyone that gets in the police's way. He told the protesters their time is up, without having the tow trucks to actually follow through.

 

He couldn't give any sort of deadline for the protesters to get a move on - possibly because in the very next breath he issued a public plea for towing companies to come forward and help the cops.

 

"We have, from the outset of this, had very great reluctance from tow operators to support us in clearing this situation," he said.

 

"Part of what we'd like to do today is to appeal to those who are tow operators to come forward and help us sort this out."

 

Cmmr Coster then admitted that he's called on the Defence Force for help with towing the cars but they never got back to him.

 

A week in and the police haven't been able to source a tow truck to clear the streets.

 

So what we have now is the Police Commissioner of New Zealand - our most senior cop - publicly begging for someone to help him tow a car.

 

It'd be funny if the public wasn't relying on him to put an end to this mess.

Before he settled out of court last night, Prince Andrew was set to be dealt a major blow in his US sex case thanks to Ghislaine Maxwell.

 

A leaked email from the prince's friend and now convicted sex trafficker appeared to confirm the authenticity of an infamous picture of the duke standing with his arm around his accuser, Virginia Roberts.

 

The photograph, said to be taken in Maxwell's London townhouse in 2001, had been questioned by Andrew and just this week his legal team had demanded Miss Roberts turn over the original.

 

The duke's legal team had claimed it might be a fake, but an email obtained by the Daily Mail shows that even Maxwell, who appears in the background of the photo, believes it to be real.

On a dramatic day of developments yesterday, it was claimed that Miss Roberts had lost the original copy of the image.

But in an email exchange seen by the Mail, the picture was discussed by Maxwell and Epstein's former lawyer, Alan Dershowitz.

 

On January 10, 2015, Mr Dershowitz wrote: 'Dear G. Do you know whether the photo of Andrew and virginia is real? You are in the background.'

 

Eleven minutes later, Maxwell replied: 'It looks real. I think it is.'

 

The timing of the exchange is significant because days earlier Miss Roberts claimed for the first time in court papers that she had been forced to have sex with both Andrew and Mr Dershowitz.

 

The allegation was struck out by a judge who branded it 'impertinent'. But it caused panic for Andrew and in emails previously reported by the BBC, he contacted Maxwell at 5.50am on January 3, 2015.

 

The duke wrote: 'Let me know when we can talk. Got some specific questions to ask you about Virginia Roberts.'

 

Maxwell replied: 'Have some info. Call me when you have a moment.'

 

Mr Dershowitz has vehemently denied having sex with Miss Roberts.

 

Last year she dropped a battery allegation she filed against him after he claimed a civil settlement she signed with Epstein in 2009 gave him immunity.

 

Miss Roberts is currently suing Mr Dershowitz for defamation, a case he is fighting.

 

His lawyers did not respond to requests asking for comment.

One thing I know from the digging I have done is that 5G has extremely limited range. Something like hundreds of feet spacing for towers just to acheive necessary coverage and bandwidth. This tells me a Starlink signal to your phone would have to be entirely different.

 

The key to understanding it further would be LEO satellites and the latency response, plus power requirements for sending and receiving. If it were easy, Starlink would have phones. Beware the fake Tesla phone vids that are all over YT, the whole thing is fake fan made vids.

Ranto Sibarani, a human rights lawyer based in Medan who handles child sexual abuse cases, said the life term for Wirawan was appropriate.

 

“We should reject the practice of the state sentencing anyone to die,” he said, adding he hoped it set a precedent for law enforcers to continue severely punishing perpetrators of sexual abuse.

 

Sibarani recently supported the families in a similar case in which Benyamin Sitepu, a 37-year-old Christian priest and principal of the Galilea Hosana School in Medan, received a 10 year sentence in January for sexually abusing six of his female students. At the time, Sibarani lambasted the verdict as “disappointing” and called for religious and educational institutions to do more to monitor their staff.

 

“In the Herry Wirawan case, there was also a state failure,” he said, pointing out the number of victims and that authorities were slow to follow up on reports of sexual abuse by a parent of a student that Wirawan had impregnated.

 

“[This provided] an opportunity for the perpetrator to find other victims. Law enforcement must be more alert and reactive, and routinely conduct checks on schools to ensure that there is no sexual harassment by teachers or religious leaders. There must be a mechanism aimed at ensuring that these children do not become victims of sexual harassment in schools or houses of worship.”

 

In recent years, Indonesia has seen a spate of child sexual abuse cases linked to educational and religious institutions.

 

On January 20, Lukas Lucky Ngalngola (alias Brother Angelo), a Catholic priest who ran an orphanage on the outskirts of Jakarta, was jailed for 14 years for sexually abusing the children under his care. In 2020, the head of an Islamic boarding school in Aceh province was sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting 15 of his male students.

 

Medan-based psychologist, Irna Minauli, who is often called as an expert witness in child abuse cases and gave testimony in the Benyamin Sitepu case, hoped Wirawan’s sentence would act as a deterrent to others.

 

“In learning psychology there is something known as vicarious learning where a person will learn about the consequences of their behaviour by seeing the consequences experienced by other people doing the same actions.”

 

But the problem in Indonesia was that punishments were inconsistent across jurisdictions in the archipelago, which has more than 17,000 islands administered as 34 provinces, Minauli said.

 

“As a result of this inconsistency, even if someone does get a severe punishment like Herry Wirawan, other criminals will consider it just ‘bad luck’. There needs to be legal certainty so that vicarious learning can be formed,” Minauli said.

 

Wirawan had been accused of deliberately exploiting vulnerable children from low socio-economic backgrounds as many of his victims attended the boarding school on scholarships. Minauli said besides trauma inflicted on the survivors of his crimes, there was a possibility the “unwanted” children from the rapes would face emotional and behavioural issues.

It is not yet clear if Wirawan will appeal his sentence. If the life sentence is upheld, his only chance of release will be as a result of being granted clemency by the president, which is unlikely in the case of a convicted paedophile.

 

“The verdict is a signal to other judges and to the government that we have to monitor these kinds of institutions more closely,” Ghozali said.

 

“This was a systemic failure, not just of the police, but of all the other institutions and social safety nets that should have protected these children including government departments, child protective services and the local community.

 

“This sentence is a warning. Not just a warning to law enforcement, but to everyone.”

A patient with leukaemia in the United States has become the first woman and the third person to date to be cured of HIV after receiving a stem cell transplant, researchers say.

 

The case, presented on Tuesday at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunisitic Infections in the US city of Denver, was the first involving umbilical cord blood to treat acute myeloid leukaemia, which starts in blood-forming cells in the bone marrow.

 

Since receiving the cord blood, the middle-aged woman of mixed race has been in remission and free of HIV for 14 months, without the need for potent treatments known as antiretroviral therapy.

 

The donor was naturally resistant to the virus that causes AIDS.

 

“This is now the third report of a cure in this setting, and the first in a woman living with HIV,” Sharon Lewin, president-elect of the International AIDS Society, said in a statement.

 

The two prior cases occurred in males, one white and one Latino, who had received adult stem cells more frequently used in bone marrow transplants.

 

This new approach may make the treatment available to more people, according to researchers.

The case is part of a wider study led by the University of California, Los Angeles and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore that follows 25 people with HIV who undergo transplants with stem cells for the treatment of cancer and other serious conditions.

 

Patients in the trial first undergo chemotherapy to kill off the cancerous immune cells and then receive transplant stem cells from individuals with a specific genetic mutation in which they lack receptors used by the virus to infect cells.

 

Scientists believe these individuals then develop an immune system resistant to HIV.

 

Lewin said that while bone marrow transplants are not a viable strategy to cure most people living with HIV, the report “confirms that a cure for HIV is possible and further strengthens using gene therapy as a viable strategy for an HIV cure”.

 

Previously, scientists believed that a common stem cell transplant side-effect called graft versus host disease – in which the donor immune system attacks the recipient’s immune system – played a role in a possible cure.

 

“Taken together, these three cases of a cure post stem cell transplant all help in teasing out the various components of the transplant that were absolutely key to a cure,” Lewin said.

While I respect Buddhism as a spiritual Philosophy, it does not recognize or advocate for a "creator god". As a non-theistic philosophy, it doesn't yield the same fruit as the tri-partite Abrahamic religions or other Religions with "Gods" who demand war and sacrifices.
