Former National Intelligence Director: Trump Has 'Ultimate Declassification Authority'

A former director of national intelligence said Aug. 12 that it is “virtually impossible” to prosecute people for mishandling classified documents, and asserted that former President Donald Trump has the “ultimately declassification authority” in terms of such documents.

“The president does have ultimate declassification authority. He can literally declassify—and President Trump had that authority, and could declassify anything you want while he was president,” John Ratcliffe, a Republican congressman before Trump appointed him to be director of national intelligence, said on Fox News.

According to documents unsealed earlier Friday, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home was raided by FBI agents on Aug. 8 because of potential violations of several laws, including the Espionage Act, which some legal experts say relates to possessing classified defense information.

An inventory showed that agents seized what they listed as classified, secret, and top secret documents.

Ratcliffe said on Fox that before the search warrant materials were made public, he didn’t believe the raid was about classified materials.

“It has to be more than that because the Department of Justice and the FBI have already set a standard that makes it virtually impossible to prosecute a case like that,” he said, pointing to how former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s possession of classified documents was handled by the FBI, including then-Director James Comey.

“As people talk about Espionage Act and classified documents and all of that, the standard was set in 2016. Remember the Department of Justice and the FBI took the official position that Hillary Clinton, who was in possession of classified documents … that [being] in possession of that, that wasn’t enough, and that being grossly negligent and being careless, Jim Comey told us, that’s not enough under the Espionage Act. You have to know you’re violating the law,” Ratcliffe said.

“Even if you assume the worst case scenario for President Trump, that there were classified documents in his possession at Mar-a-Lago, that only puts him where Hillary Clinton was. And what the FBI and the Department of Justice would have to show is that he knew the documents were there and he didn’t think they were declassified,” he added.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that all the documents seized from Mar-a-Lago were declassified.

“He had a standing order that documents removed from the Oval Office and taken into the residence were deemed to be declassified,” a Trump spokesperson told Just the News. “The power to classify and declassify documents rests solely with the President of the United States. The idea that some paper-pushing bureaucrat, with classification authority delegated BY THE PRESIDENT, needs to approve of declassification is absurd.”

Jacinda Ardern Left Reeling as Voters Prepare to Oust Her as PM

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden has been left reeling after new polls suggest she will suffer a devastating loss and be ousted in the upcoming election.

The humiliating defeat has been on the cards for a while as Ardern’s grip on power has slipped in recent months due to the public rising up and rejecting her authoritarian brand of politics.

Americans angry about the FBI raid on Donald Trump's Florida estate and insecurity at the southern border pose an increased risk of domestic terrorism, the Biden administration warned in a series of bulletins sent to federal and local law enforcement over the weekend.

The warnings from the Justice Department, the Homeland Security Department, the FBI and Customs and Border Protection used nearly identical language and were issued after one man tried to attack an FBI office in Cincinnati and a driver crashed into a barrier with his car on fire at the U.S. Capitol before committing suicide.

"Last night, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice issued a Joint Intelligence Bulletin, accessible via the Homeland Security Information Network, providing information on the potential for domestic violent extremists to carry out attacks on federal, state, and local law enforcement and government personnel or facilities," CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus wrote in a memo to 60,000 employees.

The warnings were being "shared in light of an increase in threats and acts of violence, including armed encounters, against law enforcement, judiciary, and government personnel, in reaction to the FBI's recent execution of a court authorized search warrant in Palm Beach, Florida," Magnus wrote. "Since the search, the FBI and DHS have observed an increase in violent threats posted on social media against federal officials and facilities."

A senior law enforcement official told Just the News that some federal police agencies were asked last week to monitor social media accounts of known political influencers for signs of agitation and FBI officials reached out to some social media platforms frequented by conservatives in the aftermath of Cincinnati attack, in which the perpetrator was killed.

Most of the warnings cited the Aug. 8 FBI raid on Trump's Mar-a-Lago compound as a possible motivation for violence. Some, like Magnus' memo, also mentioned concerns about illegal immigration, suggesting such concerns weren't warranted even though scores of members of Congress have expressed concern about border security under President Biden, officials said.

"As described in the June 7 National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin, some domestic violent extremists have expressed grievances related to the false perception that the U.S. government is not working to maintain security along the U.S.-Mexico border," Magnus wrote. "And there remains increased risk of domestic violent extremists relying on these grievances to justify violence against law enforcement officials involved in the enforcement of border security."

The memos said they had no specific or credible threats but urged federal and local law enforcement to use heightened awareness.

"Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of our workforce and the security of federal facilities, we are encouraging you to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings and to exercise caution as you go about your daily routine," one memo said.

BREWSTER, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - Police have found a missing wallaby in Brewster, Ohio, according to Chief Nathan Taylor.

A person stopped by the police station at around 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 11 claiming they had spotted a baby kangaroo near Millersburg Road in Stark County, officials said.

The Brewster Police Department on Aug. 14 said the animal was a wallaby and not a baby kangaroo.

Warning: This story contains video with profanity that has been bleeped.

Officials said the department was shown a video at 2 a.m. on Aug. 13 of the animal crossing a street.

WOIO received the late-night video of the animal crossing the street.

Police searched the township until 3 a.m. when they found the wallaby in the woods, officials said.

Taylor said the department was not able to capture the animal because officers “were unsure what to do,” and said the department is formulating plans to safely capture the animal.

“Never in my 25 years have I run into this,” Taylor told WOIO.

Officials have not clarified how the wallaby escaped or where it escaped from. No zoos have said they are missing a wallaby.

Police have requested people not attempt to approach or hunt the animal. Anyone missing the animal is asked to contact the police immediately.

The woman at the heart of the police sex abuse scandal that rocked Oakland, California, last year sued the neighboring city of Richmond, its current and former police chiefs and six other officers Thursday, accusing them of sexually trafficking herin exchange for police protection and information.

Although the federal complaint identifies the plaintiff as Jane Doe, her attorney John Burris confirmed in an interview that Doe is Jasmine Abuslin aka Celeste Guap, with whom Oakland settled similar allegations in May.

In the new lawsuit, Abuslin details her relationship with the Richmond Police Department, where she says it was an open secret that she was “available to them for sexual favors and pleasure in exchange for paid monies, protection, or other forms of consideration.” Abuslin, who worked as a child prostitute, describes her role there as an “exclusively department retained sex worker.”

Abuslin says current Police Chief Allwyn Brown,former Police Chief Chris Magnus, and Internal Affairs Division head Lt. Brian Dickerson knew what was happening but refused to adequately investigate or discipline their officers. Brown,Magnusand Dickerson are defendants in the case.

Abuslin claims that Richmond police investigated the misconduct only after the Oakland allegations became public. Eleven Richmond officers were identified for discipline. Of those 11, one officer was recommended for termination, one for demotion, two for suspensions of 80 hours and 120 hours, and five to receive letters of reprimand, according to the complaint.

“This is terribly outrageous,” Burris said in the interview. “They took advantage of a vulnerable young person. Girls like this are always suffering from some psychological deficit of some kind. Instead of acknowledging that and getting her help, they took advantage of her vulnerabilities. That's the most negative and damning aspect of this.”

Allegations that a slew of officers from departments around the Bay Area had sex with the teenager came to light in September 2015 after an Oakland officer killed himself and left a suicide note implicating several other officers.

Abuslin, who went by the name Celeste Guap, filed a claim in 2016 against Oakland, the Oakland Police Department and several of its officers, seeking $66 million in damages. The city settled in June for nearly $1 million.

Abuslin also plans to sue the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, the Livermore Police Department, and possibly the San Francisco Police Department, according to Burris.

One officer named in the Richmond lawsuit, Terrance Jackson, befriended Abuslin when he was assigned to her high school as a resource officer, according to the complaint. Although he knew she was an underage sex worker and was legally obligated to help her, he neglected to do so. After Abuslin graduated, he allegedly came to her house while on duty and groped her.

Hence, cellular senescence is neither simply a response to stress and damage that increases with age, nor a chronological cell-intrinsic phenomenon. Instead, senescence quickly and robustly spreads to young mice from old blood. Clearing senescence cells that accumulate with age rejuvenates old circulating blood and improves the health of multiple tissues.

So, I heard a crazy rumor that the city of Oakland, California, went through three police chiefs in eight days on the heels of some kind of sex scandal.

That rumor is accurate.

Wow. Are all three of them implicated in the sex scandal?

This is not a satisfying answer, but: There hasn’t been a ton of clarity on what caused each of the three chiefs to leave. On June 10, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said Sean Whent, who had been head of the Oakland Police Department for less than two years, was leaving for “personal reasons.” Five days later, Whent’s temporary replacement, Ben Fairow, was removed because of some piece of information that the mayor said caused her to lose confidence in him. (According to the New York Times, it may have had something to do with an affair Fairow had more than a decade ago.) Then, two days after that, Fairow’s replacement, Paul Figueroa, announced that he was leaving too. All he said by way of explanation was that he was “deeply sorry” for not being able to “fulfill the functions of acting chief of police.”

So far only one of these three men has been linked to the sex scandal, and that’sWhent.It’s possible that, as more information comes out, the others will be too, but it doesn’t seem likely.

Tell me what this sex scandal is about already.

The story starts with a young Oakland police officer named Brendan O’Brien. O’Brien joined the department in 2013 and was married to a woman named Irma Huerta Lopez, who died in June 2014 of an apparent suicide. A little over a year after Lopez’s death—on Sept. 25, 2015, to be exact—O’Brien shot himself. The suicide note he left behind triggered the series of eventsthat brought us to where we are today.

What did the suicide note say?

We don’t know exactly, because it hasn’t been made public. But according to the East Bay Express, the alternative weekly that has been driving the coverage of this scandal since it broke, O’Brien’s note revealed that he had been romantically involved with a young sex worker who had also been engaged in relationships with other Oakland police officers.

The note alerted the internal affairs division at OPD to the fact that something unsavory had been taking place. In May—so, about seven months later—four Oakland police officers were placed on administrative leave in connection with a sexual misconduct investigation, and two of them resigned from the department.

Umbrella Attack!

A South Carolina woman was killed Wednesday after a loose beach umbrella got swept up in the wind and went airborne, impaling her in the chest, authorities said.

Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard told local news outlets that beachgoer Tammy Perreault, 63, of Surfside Beach, died of chest trauma following the beach incident in Garden City, South Carolina, about 10 miles southwest of Myrtle Beach.

“A gust of wind that came through took an umbrella through the air and it just kept going and going. Everyone says, 'Duck,' and we did, but, unfortunately, she was in the line of fire,” Sherry White, one of Perreault’s best friends who witnessed the accident, told local station WMBF-TV.

Can we go back the police chief who resigned?

Which one?

The first one. You said he was the only one of the three who has been linked to the scandal, right?

That’s right—Sean Whent. His sudden and unexpected departure from the department is what really blew this story open, prompting a blockbuster piece in the Express.

OK. So how is he connected?

According to the Express, Whent was pressured to resign by Oakland’s independent police monitor, Robert Warshaw, a former police chief from New York state whose job it is to oversee OPD’s compliance with a set of court-ordered reforms that were imposed on the department 13 years ago. The Express reported that Warshaw found out in March that Whent knew about O’Brien’s sexual relationship with Guap.

And that’s why he got pushed out?

Not quite. But the fact that Warshaw’s office hadn’t been informed about the internal investigation sparked by O’Brien’s suicide note was a problem. That’s because it violated an OPD agreement with the federal government that required all internal affairs investigations to be reported to the monitor.

What is this agreement?

The agreement—known formally as a consent decree—was the result of an earlier scandal, which centered around a group of four officers who called themselvesthe “Rough Riders”and were accused of beating, robbing, and planting evidence on people while they were on patrol in West Oakland. According to Politico Magazine, the case ultimately included at least 119 plaintiffs, most of them people of color. In 2003, the suit ended with a $10.9 million settlement and a commitment from the OPD to implement a series of 51 reforms, including the elimination of racial profiling and a reduction in officer-involved shootings. Failure to comply with the reforms would result in the federal government taking over the department.

Had this consent decree done anything to reform the OPD?

Yes, though it was ineffective for a long time. In 2011, eight years after the agreement was implemented, one of the lawyers who represented the plaintiffs in the Rough Riders case, Jim Chanin, called the process of reform “a total nightmare” and said OPD might be “the worst department in the country.”

Starting in 2014—about five years after a transit police officer shot Oscar Grant at Fruitvale Station—the Oakland Police Department seemed to really be turning around. One of the reasons was Sean Whent, who became chief after proving himself as head of OPD’s internal affairs department. Whent is widely perceived to have brought about real change in Oakland thanks to his commitment to complying with the consent decree. The police department has seen substantial reductions in civilian complaints and use-of-force incidents—while also seeing drops in crime. Before the sex misconduct allegations came to light, in other words, OPD was starting to look like a success story—so much so that the federal monitor was getting ready to start winding down the consent decree. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, OPD recently made progress on a data collection project that was considered “one of the last hurdles the department must clear before being freed from more than a decade of federal oversight.”

So, wait, was Whent pushed out because he had done something to violate the consent decree agreement?

No. According to the Express, it was because of something Robert Warshaw, the federal monitor, found out when he started investigating the case.

And how did that come about?

On March 23, U.S. District Judge Thelton Henderson, whom the Express calls “the ultimate authority overseeing the department’s federal reforms,” issued a court order calling for the OPD’s investigation to be handed over to the federal monitor’s office. In his order, the judge cited “irregularities” and procedural “violations” in the police department’s handling of the sexual misconduct allegations. From that point forward the federal monitor has been in charge of overseeing the investigation.

And what did the investigation turn up once it was under the federal monitor’s jurisdiction?

Well, among other things, it was discovered that Whent’s wife had been in touch with Celeste Guap on Facebook. Guap has since confirmed this, telling reporters that Julia Whent allegedly reached out to her in June 2015. Most important, Guap says she told the chief’s wife about her relationship with O’Brien.

Wait, why would Whent’s wife have been talking to Guap on Facebook?

Great question. We don’t know.

Oof. Can we go back to O’Brien for a second? Earlier you said his wife, Irma Lopez, had died of an “apparent” suicide. Why did you hedge on that?

Because Lopez’s family doesn’t believe she really killed herself—they think O’Brien shot her.

Is there any evidence of that?

In addition to the bullet that killed her, there was an extra one discovered in the wall of the apartment Lopez shared with O’Brien.

OK … so is the idea that O’Brien killed his wife because she found out about Guap?

Actually, no. There’s no indication of that. And remember, Lopez died in June 2014. According to Guap, her relationship with O’Brien didn’t start till the following February. Again, O’Brien’s suicide note is not public, but the people who have seen it and spoken anonymously to news outlets about its contents have not said anything about O’Brien taking the blame for his wife’s death.

Got it. So what is going to happen now? Has anyone been charged or fired?

Not yet. As mentioned above, two officers have resigned from the Oakland Police Department as a result of the sexual misconduct investigation, but that investigation is still ongoing. According to ABC7, there have also been investigations opened in at least six other area police departments. And according to the Bay Area News Group, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent review of the misconduct allegations, as well as the deaths of O’Brien and his wife.

So we could still see firings and charges.

Yes. It’s important to note, though, that only a few of the officers suspected of having sex with Guap are alleged to have done so while she was underage.

Does that mean the rest are innocent of any crimes?

It does not necessarily mean that. For one thing, Guap told ABC7 that three officers paid her for sex, which is obviously a crime. But more important, Guap has said that every officer she slept with knew she was a sex worker, and according to federal law—namely, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act—a person who has sex with someone he knows to be a prostitute can face criminal prosecution even if no money changes hands. As long as the sex worker receives something of value—including help of any kind—it counts as trafficking.

I guess that’s where the whole “tipping her off to planned OPD sting operations” thing becomes a problem.

Yes. Also, in interviews, Guap has directly stated that her relationships with police officers were motivated at least in part by a desire for protection: “I think cops are fine,” she told the Express. “They’re cute and all, but it’s like one less officer that’s gonna arrest me.”

It sounds like it’s going to take a long time for all this to get sorted out. What’s the next step for OPD, in the meantime?

First, the department needs a chief. It’s been operating under the city administrator—not a law enforcement official—since the resignation of Paul Figueroa.

More broadly, though, it seems likely that a)the federal government will keep OPD under the consent decreefor longer than planned and b) there’s going to be a serious reckoning with how the department does its hiring. To that end, the two civil rights lawyers who represented the plaintiffs in the “Rough Riders” scandal—Chanin and John Burris, both of whom have been intimately involved for years in efforts to reform OPD—said at a press conference last week that they are asking for the department’s recruiting and training operations to be placed under federal receivership.

Anything else?

The city of Oakland has reportedly hired a private investigator to figure out who has been leaking information to the press. So at least we know that everyone’s priorities are in the right place

How convenient for Joe Biden that he is far from scrutiny on an extended vacation in a borrowed mansion in a secluded community on Kiawah Island, SC, the very week his attorney general unleashed a political firestorm by authorizing the FBI raid on the home of their shared nemesis, Donald Trump.

But the president couldn’t help a little subtle gloating as he rode a bike on the beach past the waiting media, flashing a cheery smile.

Asked about his vacation, he replied: “I’m enjoying it a great deal. I’ve been on the phone a lot, monitoring news reports.” Yes, you can bet he is monitoring the news, with relish.

If there is one defining adjective for Biden’s presidency, it probably is spite. His consuming hatred for “the former guy”, whose name he often can’t bring himself to utter, is palpable. He makes no secret of the fact that he despises Trump voters, too, all 74,223,369 of them…

If only Biden had been the unifying president he promised he would be, and shown a little grace in victory, commended Trump for Operation Warp Speed, perhaps, not spitefully unwound all his policies, not branded half the country “white supremacists” and “domestic terrorists” in his inaugural speech…

The Russia hoax, two impeachments, Alpha Bank, the Steele Dossier, Carter Page, the FBI lovebirds, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Stormy Daniels, Michael Cohen, Michael Avenatti, Adam Schiff, and on and on relentlessly. So, forgive us for being skeptical. When the same top Obama administration officialswho ran the Russia hoax are they are up to their old tricks?

Mar-a-Lago was like throwing a match on a “tinderbox”, says Terry Turchie, former deputy assistant director of the FBI Counterterrorism division.

“This is going to spiral out of control,” he says. “I think we are going to have a lot of trouble with people [who] are so upset. There is 1% of people we have to worry about that will react by going out and being violent and that will bring the full force of the government down on them —I wonder if that’s deliberate.”

Turchie, who captured the Unabomber and retired from the FBI in April 2001, says his “worst fear” is a major terrorist attack on an American city when the FBI has taken its eye off the ball.

“With the combination of reemergent alliances between Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, [with] al Qaeda spreading in Africa and roving bands of terrorists in Afghanistan, [with] a porous border where people can pour across, there could be a dirty nuclear bomb going off in an American city and we would have no idea who is doing it.”

He points out that the FBI has no idea how to find the 75 people (“probably more like 575”) on the terror watchlist who have come across the southern border.

“We’re in one of those terrible times, in a tinderbox atmosphere where we could see a [simultaneous] rise of domestic terrorism and international terrorism. “That is a terrible mix. You don’t want to go into that with an FBI that is highly politicized.”

The Bureau is ‘broken’

The FBI is unrecognizable since he joined in 1972, Turchie says, when agents were blue-collar crime fighters, rather than privileged Ivy Leaguers with ideological baggage. “The FBI as I knew it has collapsed. Discipline has broken down and it has become nothing more than a police agency for the Democratic Party.”

Today the FBI has lost that spirit of independence and Turchie doubts it will ever contradict the wishes of the Biden administration, no matter how wrong-headed and politically partisan.

Mar-a-Lago is the tragic proof.

et me start by suggesting you read the excellent, comprehensive analysis by Sundance at The Conservative Tree House. I can sum up the Trump documents very succinctly–the documents show that there was a coordinated effort by the CIA, the FBI and DOD starting in the summer of 2015 to interfere in the 2016 election. Part of this effort involved using NSA produced intelligence. Oliver Stone’s movie, Snowden, has a scene that accurately describes what NSA was collecting and how it could be used:

A massive ecological study that's happening across the United States, and which is designed to track the impact of long-term changes like a warming climate, is deliberately releasing a highly potent and persistent greenhouse gas in national parks and forests.

The gas, sulfur hexafluoride, is "the most potent greenhouse gas known to date," according to the Environmental Protection Agency. It's 22,800 times more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, and lasts in the atmosphere for thousands of years.

So far, this ecology study has released around 108 pounds of the gas, which has about the same impact as burning more than a million pounds of coal.

That may not seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of global emissions, but government scientists working at federal parks and forests have objected to using this gas on public lands — especially since this major study is designed to go on for 30 years and alternative gasses are available.

This kerfuffle has so far played out quietly within government agencies. But it comes at a time when all kinds of researchers are thinking about the climate effects of past practices, with some saying that scientists who understand the urgency of the climate crisis have a special obligation to set an example to the public by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of their own work.

The National Science Foundation (NSF), which funds this large ecology study, told NPR that it supports an evaluation that's now underway to see whether phasing out the use of this gas would affect the quality of the information that's being gathered.

That's not good enough for one watchdog group, which is calling for an immediate halt to the release of this gas on public lands.
