The next generation of wind turbine blades could be recycled into gummy bears at the end of their service, scientists have said.

 

Researchers at Michigan State University have made a composite resin for the blades by combining glass fibres with a plant-derived polymer and a synthetic one. Once the blades have reached the end of their lifespan the materials can be broken down and recycled to make new products including turbine blades – and chewy sweets.

 

Wind power is one of the dominant forms of renewable energy. However, turbine blades, usually made of fibreglass, can be as long as half a football field and cause problems with disposal, with many discarded in landfills when they reach the end of their use cycle.

European Corn Yields Expected To Plunge Amid Worst Drought In 500 Years

 

Besides the news of record high electricity prices, a troubling new crop failure report about Europe's upcoming harvest was published Monday. The bloc's Monitoring Agricultural Resources forecasted corn yields could drop by nearly a fifth due to a devastating drought, according to Bloomberg.

 

The plunge in corn output could result in further food inflation. It will boost feed costs for livestock herds, adding to even more woes for farmers who are plagued with elevated diesel and fertilizer prices.

 

"Water and heat stress periods partly coincided with the sensitive flowering stage and grain filling," according to the crop monitoring report. "This resulted in irreversibly lost yield potential."

 

In late August, about half of Europe is under a drought warning. Crops, power plants, industry, and fish populations have been devastated by the heat and lack of rainfall. The European Commission Joint Research Centre warned earlier this month the ongoing drought is the worst in 500 years as vast amounts of farmland turn to dust.

 

Heading into the fall, western and central Europe face a very high risk of dry conditions over the next three months that could result in water shortages.

 

Increasing crop failures because of drought will only exacerbate the food crisis due to Ukrainian disruptions. Supermarket prices for meat in the EU jumped 12% in July versus a year earlier. Milk, cheese, and eggs are also skyrocketing at record rates.

This leaves us with the idea that inflation in Europe will remain sticky, as explained by Germany's central bank chief Joachim Nagel: "The issue of inflation will not go away in 2023."

White House Deputy Counsel Jonathan Su was a busy man, at least when it came to carrying out President Joe Biden's wish to eliminate former President Donald Trump's claims that materials and testimony from his presidency were covered by executive privilege.

 

Su sent letters to former Trump adviser Steve Bannon last October and former advisers Peter Navarro and Gen. Mike Flynn in February informing them that the incumbent president had waived any claims Trump might have that testimony or evidence they might provide the House Jan. 6 committee was covered by executive privilege.

"President Biden determined that an assertion of executive privilege is not justified with respect to a set of documents shedding light on events within the White House on and about January 6, 2021," Su wrote Bannon attorney Robert Costello last Oct. 18.

San Jose, California - Debate continues as SJ explores allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections

 

A coalition of immigrant advocate groups rallied ahead of Tuesday's city council study session. It presented them with an effort to encourage leaders to extend voting eligibility in local elections to all residents, regardless of immigration status.

 

We're looking to get out of it is just inclusion," Arturo Muñoz with SOMOS Mayfair said.

 

He explained the move would present a vital opportunity for an estimated 200,000 residents who currently cannot vote.

 

No vote or action was planned for Tuesday's study session. The meeting was specifically meant to get a better understanding of the issue.

 

As it stands, federal law states that it is unlawful for a non-citizen to vote in federal elections. However, it doesn't address citizenship and voting in state or local elections.

Damage to Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant revealed (VIDEO 3:22)

 

RT has visited the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine, seeing firsthand the aftermath of the shelling of the facility by Ukrainian forces.

 

The largest nuclear power plant in Europe was seized by Russian forces in late February. Russia’s National Guard and Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense Troops are keeping the facility safe as the plant continues to operate with Ukrainian staff.

 

Kiev’s troops have been firing at the plant and the nearby city of Energodar from the opposite site of the large Kakhovka water reservoir, the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier.

 

The falling shells damaged the facades of some buildings, while missile parts are still stuck in the ground. One of the water pumping stations was hit, but continues to operate as most of the equipment is hidden underground.

 

“This [impact] crater within the vicinity of the cleaning facilities was created last Saturday due to shelling by Ukrainian forces,” RT’s Alexey Repin reports. “Literally 150 meters from here in the plant’s fifth power unit, and it’s still working, just around the corner.”

 

“At the moment, the radiation at the station, as well as the surrounding areas, is within the norms. The shelling hit mostly auxiliary equipment, hydrogen, and oxygen facilities,” a member of the Russian nuclear defense troops told RT. “We’re trying to repair the damage as soon as possible, so that the nuclear plant will not have to halt its operations.”

 

Nevertheless, Moscow has repeatedly warned that the shelling could make the plant inoperable or cause a nuclear disaster similar to the one in Chernobyl in 1986. The shelling had already caused several fires and power outages at the plant this month, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Large numbers of children are suddenly being diagnosed with a new “rare and mysterious” disease that mimics monkeypox, and experts are baffled as to where the outbreak may have originated.

Thegatewaypundit.com reports: Tomato flu was first discovered on May 6, 2022, in the Kollam district of Kerala, and as of July 26, 2022, more than 82 cases in children younger than 5 years old have been reported by local government hospitals.

 

In addition, at the Odisha Regional Medical Research Centre in Bhubaneswar, 26 children were suspected of having cases of tomato flu. These kids range in age from 1 to 9.

 

“The rare viral infection is in an endemic state and is considered non-life-threatening; however, because of the dreadful experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vigilant management is desirable to prevent further outbreaks,” according to Lancet Journal.

‘Military Grade Psy-Op’: Whistleblower Admits Twitter Narrative Is Controlled By Millions of Bots

 

Twitter is overrun by millions of bots engaged in ‘social conditioning’ according to a whistleblower who says the problem is so extreme that executives are turning a blind eye and do not have any real idea of how many bots are active on the platform.

 

Twitter’s board has been covering up its ‘extreme, egregious deficiencies’ that make it a huge risk to national security and democracy, the whistleblower Peiter ‘Mudge’ Zatko has claimed.

 

Zatko, the social media firm’s former head of security, made the bombshell disclosure to Congress and federal agencies last month.

 

He claimed the tech giant is completely mismanaged with thousands of staff given access to central controls and the most sensitive information without adequate oversight.

 

DailyMail report: Zatko, who reported directly to CEO Jack Dorsey and his replacement Parag Agrawal, said senior executives have been ‘covering up’ the platform’s biggest vulnerabilities, and even claimed one or multiple employees could be working as a spy for foreign intelligence services.

 

The whistleblower said bosses have misled the board and regulators about its security flaws that have made it susceptible to hacking, manipulation and disinformation.

 

In claims that will bolster Elon Musk’s legal bid, Zatko also said Twitter chiefs do not have the resources to know how many bots are on the site.

 

The Tesla CEO claimed the platform has not been truthful about the number of bots and fake accounts among its 238 million daily active users, and subsequently backed out of his $44billion takeover deal.

 

Zatko, who previously worked at Google and the Department of Defense, also alleged that Twitter does not reliably delete user data after an account is cancelled, often because staff have lost track of it.

 

The disclosure describes his overall findings as ‘egregious deficiencies, negligence, willful ignorance, and threats to national security and democracy.’

 

His colorful career began in the 1990s, when he simultaneously conducted classified work for a government contractor and was among the leaders of Cult of the Dead Cow, a hacking group notorious for releasing Windows hacking tools in order to goad Microsoft into improving security.

 

He was appointed to Twitter to recommend changes in structure and practices to bolster its security after a series of damaging compromises that saw users including Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Elon Musk hacked.

 

He said at the time he will examine ‘information security, site integrity, physical security, platform integrity – which starts to touch on abuse and manipulation of the platform – and engineering.’

 

But he was fired in January for what the company claimed was poor performance but what he said was retaliation.

Update (0850ET): Following the Washington Post's story on the Twitter whistleblower complaint, Elon Musk's legal team said they want to interview the former head of security Peiter Zatko.

 

CNN's Donnie O'Sullivan tweeted moments ago that Musk's lawyer Alex Spiro wants to speak with the Twitter whistleblower:

 

"We have already issued a subpoena for Mr. Zatko, and we found his exit and that of other key employees curious in light of what we have been finding."

 

One day after Elon Musk's legal team subpoenaed former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey as part of an ongoing effort to fight a lawsuit by the social media company to force the billionaire to move forward with the $44 billion acquisition deal. The Washington Post released a new report alleging executives deceived federal regulators and the company's board about "extreme, egregious deficiencies" to combat hackers.

 

WaPo cited a whistleblower complaint from the former head of security Peiter Zatko who said some of the company's servers are running out-of-date software, and executives withheld critical information about data breaches. Bezo's news outlet interviewed more than a dozen current and former employees about past deficiencies.

 

The complaint was filed last month with the SEC, DoJ, and FTC. It said thousands of employees had access to core company software, which led to data breaches and hacks of high-profile users.

 

WaPo said the whistleblower document alleges executives prioritized user growth over reducing spam and rewarded executives cash bonuses up to $10 million to increase the number of daily users.

 

The complaint noted Chief Executive Parag Agrawal was "lying" when he said in May the company was "strongly incentivized to detect and remove as much spam as we possibly can."

 

In a WaPo interview, Zatko said his decision to reveal Twitter's failures to the public is an extension of his previous work exposing security flaws within the company.

 

"I felt ethically bound. This is not a light step to take," said Zatko, who was fired by Agrawal in January. He declined to discuss what happened at Twitter, except to stand by the formal complaint. In this work, the author has evaluated the propagation of electromagnetic waves inside the human tissue such as blood, skin and fat for single-path and multi-path layers according to nano sensor transmit power calculations. In particular, the propagation characteristics of the Intra-Body Nano-Network communication channel are calculated using a theoretical approach. The analysis in this paper provides an evaluation related to the path loss, bit error rate, signal to noise ratio and the channel capacity. The model is evaluated for each single-path effect and multi-path effect. The effects of human tissue for each blood, skin and fat for single-path effect and multi-path are included in the analysis. The model frequency range is chosen from 0.01 to 1.5 THz frequencies, which are ideal for designing nano sensors antennae and using THz range for communication. Could use some prayers. Anon's family is being forced out of our residence due to the landlord wanting to house his relatives. I'm having a difficult time looking for a graveyard shift job because it's the only shift I can work into my schedule at the moment. May God have mercy on you anon. I've lived through it several times because my parents weren't good with money and decision making. I am the eldest and had to take care of my 3 baby siblings alone in a motel room. Sometimes I couldn't sleep because I was paranoid someone would break into the room. We had no family to help us either.

You guys will need enough to put a deposit down on somewhere and anyone who can work will have to, to afford the cost of rent today. Right now, my spouse has 2 jobs, and we barely make it. Work as much as you can because right now is the time to grind. It's really hard out here thanks to the Bidan admin. The only good thing that came out of the 6 of us in a motel room, was getting to be closer and bonding. Hopefully your situation isn't as bad, but at the very least, you will learn to have each other's backs.

The Biden administration is expected to announce Wednesday its largest security package to Ukraine to date valued at $3 billion.The announcement will coincide with the six-month anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

 

The package will come from the Ukraine Security Assistance (USAI) funds process, according to a U.S. official, which means the U.S. will buy the weapons through contracts instead of drawing from existing Defense Department inventory and sending them immediately.

 

The administration has used the USAI process in previous security packages for items like medium-range air defense systems, surveillance drones and counter-artillery radar systems. The time it takes for the weapons to get to Ukraine depends on industry's production lines.

 

The announcement of the package is expected Wednesday, which is Independence Day for Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned against public Independence Day celebrations due to fears that Russia could conduct "particularly ugly" attacks.

Killer in Norway massacre is sentenced

On August 24, 2012, the man who killed 77 people in a July 22, 2011, bombing and shooting attack in Norway is sentenced to 21 years in prison, the maximum allowed under Norwegian law. Anders Behring Breivik, a 33-year-old right-wing extremist with anti-Muslim views, carried out attacks in Oslo, the nation’s capital, and at a youth camp on the nearby island of Utoya because he wanted to call attention to what he referred to as the “Islamic colonization” of Europe and inspire an uprising against it. The attacks were the deadliest the nation of 5 million residents had experienced since World War II.

 

The massacre began around 3:25 p.m. when Breivik detonated a van packed with explosives outside government offices in central Oslo, leaving eight people dead and more than 200 others injured. Approximately two hours later, Breivik, dressed as a police officer, arrived on Utoya Island, about 25 miles northwest of Oslo, at a summer camp for hundreds of teenagers organized by Norway’s governing Labour Party (whose liberal immigration policies Breivik opposed). Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial lawyers are suing the Maxwell family over hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid legal bills, alleging they conspired to hide her wealth.

 

Maxwell’s former attorneys at legal firm Haddon, Morgan & Foreman (HMF) on Monday filed a civil suit against the British heiress, her brother Kevin and her estranged American husband Scott Borgerson, claiming they worked together to shield her assets so they could not be used to pay legal fees.

 

The Colorado-based firm, which represented Maxwell in previous lawsuits brought by victims of her former boyfriend Jeffrey Epstein, is suing for $850,000 (£720,000).

 

Only one member of her legal team, Bobbi Sternheim, who works for a different firm, does not appear to be named as a plaintiff in the suit.

 

According to Haddon, Morgan & Foreman, Ghislaine told the legal team Kevin Maxwell would be handling the payment for their services. However, they quickly “developed concerns about Ms Maxwell’s willingness and ability to meet her financial obligations.”

 

They claim they asked for a $250,000 pretrial retainer soon after her July 2020 arrest by the FBI on charges of sex trafficking. Around half of it was paid promptly.

 

HMF emailed Mr Maxwell asking for updates regarding the $140,000 they owed. Mr Maxwell reportedly ignored the emails.

 

“As 2021 progressed, Ms Maxwell fell consistently behind on her obligations to HMF. When HMF raised concerns, Mr Maxwell routinely assured the firm that he would satisfy the outstanding invoices,” reads the filing to the Denver court, first spotted by Australian podcaster Jen Tarran.

 

“To keep HMF from withdrawing, Mr Maxwell made a handful of sporadic payments.”

 

As her November 2021 trial neared, HMF asked for a larger $1 million retainer in “recognition that Ms Maxwell’s trial would be a complex and extended ordeal that would require HMF to advance substantial costs, divert the firm’s resources from other matters, and require turning away other potential clients.”

 

When that was not paid, on November 5 they threatened to end their representation. Mr Maxwell followed up by reiterating “the commitment we as a family have made to honour the fees due and requested by you both in good faith and as a binding commitment.”

 

Mr Maxwell allegedly told the firm that Ghislaine’s husband at the time, Mr Borgerson, controlled Maxwell’s assets and was responsible for delaying payments to the firm.

 

The legal firm claims tech entrepreneur Mr Borgerson formed two limited liability companies and used Maxwell’s money to buy two high-end condos in Boston and other properties in Massachusetts and New Hampshire in an attempt to shelter her assets.

 

In her second attempt to secure bail while awaiting trial, the 60-year-old offered the New York federal court a $28.5million bond package.

 

It was revealed that soon after their 2016 marriage she had put the majority of her $20.2m assets into a trust controlled by Mr Borgerson, which was now worth $22.02m.

 

Prosecutors said Maxwell's transfer of money to her husband showed her ability to "hide her true wealth" and claimed she had not been truthful about her assets in her initial financial disclosures.

 

The firm agreed not to drop her case. “HMF, relying on Mr Maxwell’s commitment, continued to devote all necessary resources to Ms Maxwell’s defense,” the attorneys wrote.

 

After Maxwell’s trial ended in a guilty verdict in December, more than $950,000 was due. In mid-January, Mr Maxwell paid HMF $143,500, but the rest, the firm claims, is still outstanding despite “assurances” the money would be sent.

 

When HMF informed Maxwell in prison that they planned to withdraw their services ahead of her sentencing hearing, the socialite reportedly pleaded with them to stay on her case.

 

“HMF has been damaged as a result of Mr Maxwell’s fraud in an amount to be proved at trial,” the firm finished by saying.

 

They are also suing Mr Borgerson for “wrongfully encumbering Ms Maxwell’s assets, joint marital assets, and/or assets committed to fund her defense, impairing her ability to perform her obligations.”

 

They claim Mr Borgerson and Maxwell “shared the motive of protecting those assets from creditors including HMF.”

 

HMF attorney Christopher Montville, who represents the firm in the case, did not respond to request for comment on Tuesday.

 

Maxwell is serving a 20-year-sentence at a low-security federal prison in Tallahassee, Florida. She has retained a new lawyer for her appeal.

I know taking care of yourself is probably the last thing you want to do in any capacity right now, but you should put your needs first. Even if it's something small, go ahead and try. One time, I was in my closet, ready to do something I know I'd regret but I kept visualizing a clear cup of espresso. It sounds weird but I really love coffee and making those in the morning was something I wanted to do one more time. That was enough for me.

Rainwater everywhere on the planet is unsafe to drink due to levels of toxic chemicals known as PFAS that exceed the latest guidelines, according to a new study by Stockholm University scientists.

 

Commonly known as 'forever chemicals' because they disintegrate extremely slowly, PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) were initially found in packaging, shampoo or makeup but have spread to our entire environment, including water and air.

 

"There is nowhere on Earth where the rain would be safe to drink, according to the measurements that we have taken," Ian Cousins, a professor at the university and the lead author of the study published in Environmental Science and Technology, told AFP.

 

A compilation of the data since 2010 that his team studied showed that "even in Antarctica or the Tibetan plateau, the levels in the rainwater are above the drinking water guidelines that the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) proposed", he said.

 

Normally considered pristine, the two regions still have PFAS levels "14 times higher" than the US drinking water guidelines.

 

The EPA recently lowered its PFAS guidelines significantly after discovering that the chemicals may affect the immune response in children to vaccines, Cousins noted.

 

Once ingested, PFAS accumulate in the body.

 

According to some studies, exposure can also lead to problems with fertility, developmental delays in children, increased risks of obesity or certain cancers (prostate, kidney and testicular), an increase in cholesterol levels.

Cousins said PFAS were now "so persistent" and ubiquitous that they will never disappear from the planet.

 

"We have made the planet inhospitable to human life by irreversibly contaminating it now so that nothing is clean anymore. And to the point that's it's not clean enough to be safe", he said.

 

"We have crossed a planetary boundary", he said, referring to a central paradigm for evaluating Earth's capacity to absorb the impact of human activity.

 

However, Cousins noted that PFAS levels in people have actually dropped "quite significantly in the last 20 years" and "ambient levels (of PFAS in the environment) have been the same for the past 20 years".

 

"What's changed is the guidelines. They've gone down millions of times since the early 2000s, because we've learned more about the toxicity of these substances."

 

Cousins said we have to learn to live with it.

 

"I'm not super concerned about the everyday exposure in mountain or stream water or in the food. We can't escape it… we're just going to have to live with it."

 

"But it's not a great situation to be in, where we've contaminated the environment to the point where background exposure is not really safe."

Mountain biker Rab Wardell has died in his sleep aged 37 - just two days after winning the Scottish championship.

 

Wardell won the elite men's title at the Scottish MTB XC Championships in Dumfries and Galloway at the weekend.

 

The rider appeared on BBC Scotland's The Nine programme on Monday evening, describing how he had overcome three punctures to win the race.

 

The former Commonwealth Games cyclist set a new record time for completing the West Highland Way in 2020.

Wardell, who lived in Glasgow, had been racing mountain bikes since he was a teenager, but only turned professional earlier this year.

 

His win at Kirroughtree Forest on Sunday was described as a "show of incredible resilience" by British Cycling after Wardell managed to catch the early race leaders to take the win.

 

Recalling the race the day after on The Nine, Wardell said: "To be honest, it was a bit of a disaster, but I just have to keep on trucking and keep racing.

 

"I guess I still felt confident that I'd be able to catch the leaders and win so I just gave it my best shot - what more can you do?"

 

Scottish Cycling said it was "devastated" to confirm the death of its former employee and international mountain biker Wardell.

 

"We have very little information at this stage, but we send our love and support to his family, friends and all those in our community who knew him," the organisation said on Twitter.

 

Mountain biker Rab Wardell has died in his sleep aged 37 - two days after winning the Scottish championship.

White House Deputy Counsel Jonathan Su was a busy man, at least when it came to carrying out President Joe Biden's wish to eliminate former President Donald Trump's claims that materials and testimony from his presidency were covered by executive privilege.

Vitamin A is essential in numerous biological processes and pathways, including growth, vision development, immune function, and metabolism. Severe vitamin A deficiency (VAD) results in disruption of normal tissue function and is associated with childhood blindness, anemia, and depressed responses to infection; VAD during a severe infection may result in death61-63 . While the long-term effects of vitamin deficiency in rodents are not as well understood, the available literature on human deficiencies suggests that the decreases in vitamin A and E observed in this study may be detrimental over time.

 

Basically, consuming insects over time will result in depletion of vitamins. Humans exposed to Modified mRNA gene therapy injections are all in varying degrees afflicted with DEATHVAX™-induced VAIDS, and will be especially susceptible to chitin-rich diets.

Reese et al. have now found that mice treated with chitin develop an allergic response, characterized by a build-up of interleukin-4 expressing innate immune cells. Treatment with a chitinase enzyme abolishes the response. Occupations associated with high environmental chitin levels, such as shellfish processors, are prone to high incidences of asthma, suggesting that this pathway may play a role in human allergic disease.

 

What would happen to a person that is suffering from COVID and/or the DEATHVAX™ if they were on an insect heavy diet?

 

What would happen to a person that developed asthma, inflammation, immunocompromisation, vitamin depletion, etc. from an insect heavy diet if they contracted COVID and/or received a spike protein inducing injection?

It seems the problem of chitin has been known for years. I found a 2017 study entitled, "Lowering Chitin Content of Cricket ( Gryllus assimilis) Through Exoskeleton Removal and Chemical Extraction and its Utilization as a Ruminant Feed"…

 

"Background and objective: Cricket contains high crude protein level but it also contains considerable amount of chitin that may impede nutrient digestion and decrease production performance of animal [sic]."

 

IE, efforts are underway to get remove the cricket chitin because farm animals get tummy-aches and worse. People OTOH are being told it's "good for your digestion."

 

But brace yourself… there's more. Crickets can introduce new diseases all by themselves. This from a 2021 study:

 

"Insects generally have high reproductive rates leading to rapid population growth and high local densities; ideal conditions for disease epidemics. The parasites and diseases that naturally regulate wild insect populations can also impact when these insects are produced commercially, on farms. While insects produced for human or animal consumption are often reared under high density conditions, very little is known about the microbes associated with these insects, particularly those with pathogenic potential…. his will become particularly relevant as-and-when cricket rearing facilities scale up and transform from producing insects for animal feed to producing insects for human consumption."

 

NOTE: that was published in May 2021. Entomo Farms (formerly Next Millennium Farms) in Canada was founded in 2014, and by Jan. 2021 it was already raising crickets crowded by the millions into a warm, humid enclosed space of 60,000 sq. ft. After 6-8 weeks they are harvested. No mention of checking insect health during that time. In short, they're using the same caution in producing 'healthy' cricket 'food' as they did in producing 'safe and effective' mRNA 'vaccines'.

Part II of yesterday's post is coming tomorrow, had to attend a meeting today with a friend. Nonetheless, I think long-term this is fairly important.

 

It has been known for quite a while there is a massive push for planetary dietary change, steering the majority of the world’s population from animal protein to different forms of synthetic protein. One favored by many of the ones pushing this change under different agendas is plant-based. If anyone ever annoys you about plant-based protein, just show them this. Plant-based will never have the same nutritional value as animal protein, regardless of how much they “add” or gene edit it.

 

 

The other, dare I say more nefarious from my perspective, is bug-based everything. Being vehemently against synthetic forms of protein it never crossed my mind to check for the following. VIRAL SPREAD Warning as health chiefs say monkeypox cases are ‘evading’ jabs

HEALTH chiefs have warned people to be on the lookout for monkeypox as infections have started to 'evade' vaccines.

 

The bug has been spreading across the globe with 3,025 infections having been picked up in the UK.

 

In the US, there is now a total of 15,433 cases, with California and New York being hardest hit.

 

Now, chiefs at the World Health Organisation (WHO) have warned that there has been a number of breakthrough cases of the bug.

 

This means that people who are vaccinated - are still catching the illness.

 

Dr Rosamund Lewis, WHO's technical lead for monkeypox, said these infections have been seen in people who had a prophylaxis vaccine following exposure to the virus.

 

"We have known from the beginning that this vaccine would not be a silver bullet, that it would not meet all the expectations that are being put on it and that we don't have firm efficacy data or effectiveness data in this context.

 

"The fact that we're beginning to see some breakthrough cases is also really important information because it tells us that the vaccine is not 100% effective in any given circumstance, whether preventive or post-exposure.

 

"We cannot expect 100 per cent effectiveness at the moment based on this emerging information," she told a press briefing.

 

Following the outbreak, jabs have been rolled out as a preventative tool.

 

In the UK they have been given to those most affected and are also being dosed out to people who have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.

 

The breakthrough cases comes as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) yesterday announced that jabs are being 'stretched five-fold' to meet demand.

 

Chiefs said that jabs will now be piloted in smaller doses, stretching existing supply and protecting more people.

 

It's a method known as 'fraction dosing' and has commonly been used in other outbreaks.

 

The rollout will be trialled at one clinic in Manchester and two in London.

 

This approach to vaccines means that the maximum doses can be given without compromising protections.

 

The virus can be protected with the Jynneos smallpox vaccine.

 

But officials said the new data on efficacy 'isn't surprising'.

 

Dr Lewis added: "It reminds us that vaccine is not a silver bullet, that every person who feels that they are a risk, and appreciates their own level of risk, and wishes to lower their own level of risk have many interventions at their disposal, which includes vaccination where available but also protection from activities where they may be at risk."

 

The bug spreads primarily through skin to skin contact and can also be spread from respiratory droplets.

 

The most recent data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) states that globally, there are 41,358 cases of the illness across 94 countries.

Shanghai turns out the lights as China struggles to maintain power supplies amid a record heat wave

 

China’s unprecedented 71-day heat wave has made it difficult for the nation to keep the lights on in recent weeks.

 

Suffocating heat and dry conditions have exacerbated an ongoing drought in China’s Sichuan region, which relies on hydropower for 80% of its energy needs. As a result, the province, which is home to more than 80 million people, has been forced to close factories and ask residents to cut their power use.

 

On Sunday, officials extended the power cuts in Sichuan until Aug. 25, and regions outside of Sichuan started their own cuts. The effects on supply chains and Chinese industry could be devastating due to their indiscriminate nature and the inability of factory managers to find workarounds.

 

“The situation has worsened in the past few days,” Mirko Woitzik, the global director of intelligence solutions for Everstream Analytics, a supply-chain insights and risk analytics company, told Fortune. “In terms of factory closures, last week was one of the worst weeks in China, with the overall situation approaching levels last seen during the severe COVID-19 lockdown in Shanghai/Kunshan” earlier this year.

 

Limits on the amount of electricity that can be produced have led to disruptions at more than a dozen auto manufacturers, affected lithium producers, and slowed the processing of semiconductors at key facilities, Woitzik said.

 

And in Shanghai, China’s financial hub and biggest city, officials said in a notice over the weekend that buildings along the Yangtze River would not be lit on Monday or Tuesday to conserve power, leaving the city’s world-renowned skyline dark.

 

While power cuts like these to factories and office buildings are having a big impact on Chinese economic growth and supply chains, there’s another hidden bogeyman out there, according to Woitzik.

 

“If temperatures do not drop in the coming days, transportation will also be impacted—for instance via the Yangtze River, which is similar in its supply chain importance to the Rhine River in Europe, adding to manufacturing supply chain woes,” he said.

 

Recently, low water levels in the Rhine River prevented cargo vessels from completing shipments, impacting supply chains in Europe. Deutsche Bank even called the river a potential “Achilles' heel” for the bloc as it continues to fight an ongoing energy crisis. If China’s drought doesn’t end soon, the country could face a similar situation.

 

China’s heat wave has also extended geographically: Nearly 530,000 square miles within the country experienced temperatures above 104° F (40° C) at least once over the last 70 days, according to state media reports. It’s now so bad that more than 260 Chinese weather stations have recorded their highest-ever temperature readings over the past two months.

 

"I can't think of anything comparable to China's heat wave of summer 2022 in its blend of intensity, duration, geographic extent, and number of people affected,” meteorologist Bob Henson told Axios.

 

Woitzik pointed out that the Hunan region, just east of Sichuan, was also forced to declare a state of emergency due to the heat wave and drought. The province gets some 40% of its electricity needs from hydropower, and with reservoir levels falling, the region is instituting power cuts as Sichuan did in order to conserve energy.

 

China’s largest freshwater lake in the Hunan region has shrunk 66% due to the drought and extreme heat, revealing startling images for airplane passengers flying over the area.

 

That’s not great news, because Hunan produces 22% of China’s rice, which is the staple food of 65% of the country’s population, according to researchers at Hunan Agricultural University; the province is also known as a manufacturing hub for special machinery and metals.

The Internal Revenue Service says it is conducting a comprehensive review of safety at its facilities.

 

Responding to an increasing number of threats borne of conspiracy theories that agents were going to aggressively target middle income taxpayers, the Internal Revenue Service announced Tuesday that it was conducting a comprehensive review of safety at its facilities.

The climate, healthcare and tax legislation signed into law by President Joe Biden last week included $80 billion in funding for tax collection efforts. Although Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen specifically directed the agency to not focus its attention on taxpayers with middle class incomes, misinformation spread rapidly on line that agents were going to crack down on taxpayers of all earnings levels.

 

The baseless assertions also said the IRS would distribute firearms to employees authorized to used deadly force, prompting threats to the IRS employees.

Now agency leadership has launched an examination of agency safety.

“We are conducting a comprehensive review of existing safety and security measures,” said Chuck Rettig, IRS commissioner about the agency’s 600 office locations nationwide. “This includes conducting risk assessments,” he said, by monitoring perimeter security, designations of restricted areas, exterior lighting, security around entrances of facilities and other measures.

“For me this is personal. I’ll continue to make every effort to dispel any lingering misperceptions about our work,” Rettig said in a Tuesday letter to employees. “And I will continue to advocate for your safety in every venue where I have an audience.”

 

Rettig, whose term at the IRS ends in November, is tasked with developing a plan on how to spend the new infusion of funds included in the Inflation Reduction Act.

Along with anonymous online forums, high-ranking Republican politicians have spread falsehoods about the IRS workforce and how the newly allocated funds would be spent.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., sent an August 16 open letter to Americans, calling on them not to take any new IRS positions, reinforcing false information about open roles at the agency and their access to firearms.

The revelation actually slipped out in October 2020 during a World Economic Forum podcast called ‘Seeking a cure for the infodemic’, although it is only going viral on Twitter today.

 

In the podcast, Melissa Fleming, head of global communications for the United Nations, explains how the COVID pandemic and lockdowns created a “communications crisis” in addition to a public health emergency.

 

Fleming acknowledged that in order to fight so-called “misinformation” about the pandemic, the UN tapped up 110,000 people to amplify their messaging across social media.

 

“So far, we’ve recruited 110,000 information volunteers, and we equip these information volunteers with the kind of knowledge about how misinformation spreads and ask them to serve as kind of ‘digital first-responders’ in those spaces where misinformation travels,” Fleming stated.

 

That was nearly 2 years ago. It is not known how many ‘digital first responders’ have been recruited up to this point.

South Carolina elementary principal found dead in car; suspect in same car arrested

A South Carolina elementary school principal was found shot to death inside a car and the suspected shooter, who was in the car too, is in custody, authorities said.

 

Wendy Cook, 54, was shot early Sunday, Dillon County Sheriff Douglass Pernell said. Coroner Donnie Grimsley ruled her death a homicide on Monday, WBTW-TV reported.

 

Authorities arrested Kyle Church, 31, after being called at about 3:15 a.m. Sunday to an address just outside Dillon to investigate reports of gunshots, Pernell said. When deputies arrived, Pernell said, they found Cook and Church inside a car and Cook was dead. Deputies also recovered a gun, he said.

The U.S. military launched airstrikes Tuesday in Syria that targeted sites used by groups with ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

USGS issues rare earthquake advisory for South Carolina

ELGIN, S.C. (WNCN) — An ongoing earthquake swarm in South Carolina has led the United States Geological Survey to issue an advisory about the chance of larger earthquakes in the future.

 

The USGS defines an earthquake swarm as “a prolonged sequence of earthquakes that lacks any clear primary event or mainshock, in contrast to an aftershock sequence where a large mainshock is followed by a decaying sequence of (mostly) smaller earthquakes.”

A swarm of earthquakes is ongoing near the towns of Elgin and Lugoff.

ELGIN, South Carolina — The USGS is providing scenarios to estimate the chance of larger earthquakes as part of an ongoing swarm in the region.

The swarm began on December 27, 2021, with a magnitude 3.3 earthquake. The largest earthquake to occur so far has been a magnitude 3.6 event on June 29, 2022.
