Zelensky approves sell-off of Ukrainian state banks

 

The privatization legislation brings Kiev in line with World Bank requirements, according to local media reports

 

According to local media, citing MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak, the legislation, adopted by the Rada on September 19, is aimed at reducing the state’s presence in the banking sector. This is one of the requirements of the World Bank and is a mandatory condition for providing loans to Kiev.

 

Ukraine’s $15.6 billion IMF loan program also calls for bank privatizations and these will be key to unlocking new tranches of aid.

 

The new law is reportedly also designed to attract potential investors. According to the National News Agency of Ukraine, the new rules expand the range of potential investors and allows for the sale of any state share (previously just 100% of the share) in a bank.

 

They also update the regulations for setting the price and conducting auctions in accordance with the World Bank’s recommendations. The participation of former shareholders in privatization will also be prohibited.

 

The law applies to all state-owned banks, including PrivatBank and Ukrgasbank, as well as Sense Bank, PINbank, and Motor-Bank, which were nationalized after 2022. Oschadbank and Ukreximbank are reportedly the two exceptions.

 

National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Governor Andrey Pyshny told local media on Thursday that Sense Bank and Ukrgasbank are “two priority banks for starting the privatization process involving a consultant, who will have to choose the best options.”

Texas AG Ken Paxton Sues Doctor for Illegally Providing Harmful “Gender Transition” Treatments to Nearly Two Dozen Children

 

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued a North Texas doctor for blatantly violating Texas law by providing prohibited “gender transition” treatments to nearly two dozen minors.

 

Senate Bill 14, a Texas law that took effect in September 2023 and was upheld by the Texas Supreme Court in June 2024, prohibits “gender transition” medical interventions such as surgeries, puberty blockers, and cross-sex hormones for minors. Growing scientific evidence strongly suggests that “gender transition” interventions prescribed to or performed on children in an attempt to anatomically or hormonally alter their biological sex characteristics have damaging, long-term consequences. Additionally, the prohibited treatments are experimental, and no scientific evidence supports their supposed benefits.

 

Texas law also directs that the Texas Medical Board “shall revoke the medical license or other authorization to practice medicine of a physician who violates” the provisions of SB14.

 

Evidence obtained by the Office of the Attorney General revealed that a Dallas-area doctor illegally provided high-dose cross-sex hormones to twenty-one minor patients for the direct purpose of “transitioning” the child’s biological sex. The doctor allegedly used false diagnoses and billing codes to mask these unlawful prescriptions.

 

“Texas passed a law to protect children from these dangerous unscientific medical interventions that have irreversible and damaging effects,” said Attorney General Paxton. “Doctors who continue to provide these harmful ‘gender transition’ drugs and treatments will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

A Texas inmate who has been on death row for over two decades has had his execution - scheduled for tonight - blocked by a Texas judge. Robert Roberson, 57, was set to die by lethal injection following his conviction for killing his toddler daughter Nikki at his Palestine, East Texas home in 2002.

 

On Thursday afternoon, just two hours before he was to be put to death, Travis County Judge Jessica Mangrum blocked Roberson's execution so that he could testify before the Texas legislature. The legislature issued a subpoena for Roberson's testimony yesterday and Mangrum has approved a temporary restraining order.

 

On Wednesday, he was called to testify in front of the Texas House committee tasked with evaluating the legality of his murder conviction. The discrepancy is the hearing is scheduled for October 21 - days later than his execution date - yet the Department of Criminal Justice has not confirmed if his execution will be delayed or not.

 

The subpoena states that the accused killer must 'provide all relevant testimony and information concerning the committee’s inquiry,' according to CNN. The motion to allow Roberson to testify was backed by seven representatives. Rep. Brian Harrison filed the motion and Rep. Jeff Leach seconded it.

 

The state attorney general's office is going to keep fighting for Roberson to be executed and will now go through the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, the Texas Observer reported. Leach said to CNN: 'It’s a historic, unprecedented step. We’ll see what happens next.' Roberson's attorneys said he would be the first American to be executed for charges linked to shaken baby syndrome.

 

These extended efforts came just after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously denied to overturn his conviction. The lead detective in the case Brian Wharton, numerous scientists and a bipartisan coalition of 86 state lawmakers have all came forward in support of his final bid for salvation.

 

Roberson was diagnosed with autism in 2018 while he was in prison. His lawyers claimed his diagnosis was not taken into account and contributed to his arrest and conviction. Prosecutors originally argued that Nikki's death was linked to shaken baby syndrome. She had intracranial hemorrhaging, brain swelling and bleeding behind her retinas. But his attorneys submitted evidence that the doctors may have misdiagnosed the young girl's cause of death, as they questioned whether shaken baby syndrome even exists. Roberson has maintained his innocence in his daughter's death. In August, his attorneys requested that the district court in Anderson County reopen his case.

 

In that filing, lawyers claimed new medical and scientific evidence shows Nikki died of severe viral and bacterial pneumonia that progressed to sepsis and then septic shock. They alleged she was chronically ill and suffered a high fever in the days before her death. When those symptoms continued for five days straight, Roberson and his mother took Nikki to a local emergency room, where a doctor prescribed Phenergan - a drug that now carries a Food and Drug Administration warning against being prescribed to children of Nikki's age and in her condition.

It was originally announced that Rockefeller died in his offices at Rockefeller Center. But a family spokesperson later said Rockefeller had been working on an art book at his private offices elsewhere in Manhattan when he was stricken. There also were discrepancies with his time of death and who was with him. Marshack was not initially identified as being with him when he died.

Marshack kept quiet about what happened and became a 'mystery woman' hounded by reporters.

Army veteran killed by Texas police after high-speed chase, pointing rifle at officers

 

An Army veteran was shot and killed Tuesday by local police in Orange County after leading authorities on a high-speed chase through two towns, crashing in front of a school and pointing a semiautomatic weapon at officers.

 

Jeremy Taylor Culp, 32, died at the scene where more than 25 rounds were heard fired in roughly eight seconds, according to a video of the incident. Culp served in the Army from August 2010 to January 2013, the service said. He deployed to Afghanistan from February to August 2012 and left at the rank of private.

 

Though police offered few details about what triggered the incident, the veteran’s family said Culp suffered a traumatic brain injury during a military exercise and had post-traumatic stress disorder, local TV news station Fox 4 reported. However, he’d been doing well for the past eight years, his family told the TV station.

 

The incident began Tuesday at about 9 a.m. in Bridge City, a small town in southeast Texas near the Louisiana state line. Police received calls that someone was firing shots at multiple homes on the street where Culp owns a home, according to public property records and law enforcement.

 

Culp fled the area in white Dodge Ram truck and struck a police officer on a motorcycle who was escorting a wide-load truck down State Highway 73, Sgt. Shana Clark with Texas Department of Public Safety said Tuesday during a news conference held shortly after the shooting. The officer who was hit suffered a severe leg injury.

 

Police chased Culp as he sped northeast toward Orange. Culp eventually crashed his truck into a utility pole just outside of West Orange-Stark Middle School, Clark said. The school is about 9 miles from where the initial shots were fired in Bridge City.

 

In the video of the incident, a school bus can be seen driving through an intersection as several officers surround the truck with their guns drawn.

 

Culp, who is not visible in the video, got out of the truck with a semiautomatic rifle. Police shouted commands to Culp, which he initially followed, Clark said. He set the gun on the ground and began to lie flat.

 

However, as police began to approach Culp, he grabbed the gun again and pointed it at officers. Police fired dozens of rounds, killing the veteran.

 

One police officer was injured in the leg during the shooting, but Clark said Tuesday that officials were uncertain what caused the injury.

 

“Law enforcement performed their duties and saved lives,” she said.

 

Agencies involved in the shooting included the Texas Department of Public Safety, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Orange Police Department, Orange County Constable’s Office and the West Orange Police Department.

 

State police, who are handling the investigation, declined to say how many rounds were fired.

Judicial Watch announced today it filed an Arizona Public Records Law lawsuit against Stephen Richer in his official capacity as the Maricopa County Arizona Recorder for records involved in using staff to pursue personal interests, including his personal defamation lawsuit against Kari Lake – Senate candidate and 2022 gubernatorial candidate (Judicial Watch, Inc. v. Stephen Richer, in his official capacity as Maricopa County Recorder (No. CV-2024-028791)). (The recorder’s office helps conduct and supervise elections.)

 

The suit was filed in the Superior Court for the State of Arizona after Richer failed to respond to a March 25, 2024, open records law request for:

 

Any documents directing the utilization of Maricopa County Recorder Office (MCRO) staff to search for information concerning the personal defamation lawsuit involving Kari Lake.

Any information submitted to the Court(s) in official litigation proceedings regarding the personal defamation lawsuit.

Any time sheets, invoices, or receipts, indicating MCRO expenses related to obtaining information in the lawsuit.

Any documents addressing 1st Amendment rights including articles, op-eds, and/or speeches, generated by Mr. Richer and/or MCRO staff.

Any MCRO policies, addressing:

Conflict of interest

Using County/Office resources for personal use

Any documents indicating current MCRO employees from former Senator McSally’s office.

In November 2022, Republican gubernatorial hopeful Kari Lake questioned the results of Maricopa County’s electoral procedure. Lake criticized both Richer and her opponent, Democrat Katie Hobbs, who was the incumbent secretary of state in charge of overseeing election operations. In June 2023, Richer filed a defamation lawsuit.

 

On March 23, 2024, an article from AZ Free News reported, “Public records revealed that Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer tasked staff with compiling articles and online content pertaining to his personal defamation lawsuit against Kari Lake – Senate candidate and 2022 gubernatorial candidate – as well as topics of personal political interest.”

 

Richer recently made the news again for aligning with the left-leaning States United Democracy Center to target election speech.

Some of CNN's biggest on-air personalities are 'living in fear' as they brace for inevitable layoffs and massive salary cuts at the hands of the CEO.

 

Mark Thompson, who was hired late last summer as the network's new chief executive, is poised to overhaul the network - denying raises, trimming positions and moving some operations from New York to Atlanta, The Ankler reported. And as ratings continue to tank, some of the network's most popular - and expensive - anchors and correspondents may have their entire positions axed. 'Flat is the new up,' a CNN agent told the outlet with a laugh.

 

>Along with the hundreds of other jobs lost at the network, insiders expect this winter to be a 'bloodbath.'

 

The network's dozens of national correspondents - who make anywhere between the mid-to-high six figures - are at the highest risk of having their salaries or jobs cut. 'If you are not getting an offer several months out, you are in a precarious place,' a staff member told The Ankler. 'That anxiety has trickled down and out and across the place.' Last month, CNN drew a total of 853,000 total viewers. The number is a third less than the network's competitors, including Fox News and MSNBC, which both drew well over a million.

 

Despite the ratings drop, Thompson has taken to prioritizing the network's digital strategy over all else since taking his position in the New York City office last October. Now, those who are employed as the talent on CNN's primetime programming segments are nervous about their contracts and job security.

'Mark has made it known he doesn't like the conventional style of TV packages we are doing,' another staff member told The Ankler.

An autopsy report has confirmed Liam Payne's cause of death a day after the singer passed away at the age of 31.

 

On Oct. 16, the former One Direction band member died after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.

 

The autopsy report, according to a press release from the Argentina National Prosecutor’s Office, details how the singer died and sheds light on the injuries he sustained before passing away.

 

The Sistema de Atencio Medica de Emergencia shared the following statement with Telemundo, part of NBCUniversal, after Payne’s death.

 

“British musician Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo,” the statement read. “In the afternoon, police personnel from Precinct 14B were directed to the hotel by a 911 call reporting an aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

 

The call, which occurred minutes before Payne's death, according to the prosecutor's office, did not name Payne.

 

In a statement to the Associated Press, the Security Ministry of Buenos Aires said Payne “had jumped from the balcony of his room.” Medics noted that the singer had “extremely serious injuries” and declared him dead on the scene.

 

The Argentina National Prosecutor’s Office shared details from Payne's autopsy in a press release obtained by TODAY.com.

 

Per the autopsy, Payne died of "polytrauma and internal and external bleeding."

 

The prosecutor's office called the death "doubtful/undetermined," meaning there was no conclusive information about the cause of death.

 

Following Payne’s death, "a series of substances were seized from the musician’s room, which would prove a previous situation of alcohol and drugs consumption" the release said.

 

Payne was open about his history of addiction prior to his death.
